Pełny tekst źródłaThe presented work concerns the synthesis and characterization of amphipilic antioxidant compounds for the formulation of wood preservatives allowing the preparation of waterborne formulations to reduce rejections of VOCs answering to increasing environmental pressures. Based on preliminary studies showing synergistical effects between fungicides and antioxidants, the aim of this study was to design compounds possessing surfactant and antioxidant properties allowing the formulation in water of insoluble organic fungicides and to reduce the necessary quantity of biocide due to synergistical effects with antioxidant properties. Three families of amphiphilic compounds were synthesized. The first one corresponds to hindered phenol derivatives, the second to hindered amine and the third one to quats “with green label” derived from ascorbic acid. Surfactant and antioxidant properties of all new synthesized compounds have been characterized. The use of aqueous formulations of propiconazole prepared from these new surface active agents allows to increase beech wood durability exposed to the white rot fungus Coriolus versicolor. Fungal growth inhibition tests realized on malt agar medium with various alkylammonium ascorbates presenting different alkyl chain’s lengths indicated an important growth inhibition of the mycelium for some of the tested products correlated at their amphiphilic properties

Pełny tekst źródłaFirefighting foams are used on class B fires (flammable solvents). The efficiency of currently used foams containing fluorinated foaming agents is ensured by the formation of an aqueous thin film on top of the burning solvent. The formation of such film requires the use of fluorinated surfactants that specifically adsorb at the water-air interface. Companies currently develop fluorine-free products for firefighting foams because this kind of surfactants is harmful for the environment and health. Very stable foams are necessary to the formation of a thick layer of foam that resists high temperatures and defoaming by the solvent, preventing fire re-ignition.In this work, improved foam stability was achieved by using thickeners in the foaming fluid together with the non-fluorinated surfactants. Polysaccharides such as xanthan gum were used and their interactions with surfactants were investigated. Complex species formed by such interactions were used in order to improve foam stability and resistance against flames. This causes a lower foamability but higher stability of foams. Small scale fires extinguishing experiments performed following the standard EN1568 showed the efficiency of xanthan gum addition. These innovative formulations combining polysaccharides and foaming agents are suitable alternatives to those containing fluorinated surfactants. Moreover, they are more and more complex and the formulations contain mixtures that are finally disseminated in various compartments of the environment. Among these micropollutants, surfactants present some particularities. First, surfactants are complex mixtures of homologues and isomers whose composition depends on the raw materials and the synthesis processes used. Secondly, some, such as linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) and triethanolamine esterquats (TEAQ), are used in very large quantities, which may induce "pseudo-persistence" in the receiving environments. Finally, the fields of application of surfactants are extremely varied, ranging from domestic to industrial, agricultural and hospital, which suggests a large number of sources of transfer to the environment. The data concerning their occurrence are very heterogeneous according to the families, and some types of surfactants have never been looked for in rivers until now. The objective of this thesis was therefore to develop sensitive and reliable analytical methodologies to fill this knowledge gap concerning the occurrence of surfactants in the environment. In order to obtain sufficient sensitivity, a liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was first optimized. Contamination of instrumental blanks, in particular by anionic surfactants, at concentrations between 0.1 µg/L and 3 µg/L was observed. As the limits of quantification (LOQ) were still too high compared to the PNEC, a pre-concentration step by solid phase extraction was developed for the analysis in river water. For sediment analysis, an ultrasound-assisted extraction was optimized and validated. With LOQs between 0.015 and 0.485 µg/L for water and between 6.4 and 158 µg/kg for sediment, the analytical performances obtained are compatible with trace analysis. The application of these methodologies to river waters and sediments sampled in France showed a high occurrence of surfactants in these media. In particular, LAS have both high quantification frequencies and high mean concentration to PNEC ratios, and therefore represent a significant risk to ecosystems

In this context, the use of industrial organic products derived from the processing of renewable matter has been proposed. In this study, three non traditional products have been selected: an enzymatic solution, a lignosulfonate and an acid solution. In a first approach, hydromechanical properties of four treated soils (a silt, a clayey soil and two sands) were investigated. The experimental results showed interesting applications for the silt when its natural water content is low. Indeed, the compaction ability of the soil was increased after enzymatic and lignosulfonate treatments. Thus, savings of water and energy could be expected during the construction stage. To gain a better understanding of the mechanisms of the treatment products, the microstructure of treated soil were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, mercury injection porosity and was completed by the study of a surfactant addition in soils. The global aim of the study was beyond the characterization of mechanical behavior of treated soils, therefore, environmental balance was also estimated for the different applications defined in accordance to the experimental results. For enzymatic and lignosulfonate treatments, a comparison of the global environmental impact was done thanks to a life cycle assessment methodology. This approach showed that technical and environmental interest are associated for the compaction of dry soils when the production and transport steps have limited environmental impact as demonstrated in the sensitivity analysis

Pełny tekst źródłaSoil and sediment contamination by polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is a global health and environmental concern, since PCBs are toxic and recalcitrant. The aim of this thesis is to find a remediation process to PCBs contaminated sediments by using zerovalent iron (ZVI). To begin the studies on remediation, a survey was conducted on sites contaminated by e-waste recycling activities in south China. PCBs contamination was not as severe as previously, whereas the co-existence of PCBs and heavy metals increases the difficulty of remediation. Afterwards, the feasibility PCBs degradation by ZVI in aqueous solutions was investigated. Results confirmed the stepwise dechlorination of PCBs by ZVI and the major pathway with congener specifity and regiospecifity. The relative importance of the influential factors to ZVI degradation of PCBs was in the order of surfactants > humic acid > pH > Ni2+. Sediment decontamination was studied by 1) washing with an aqueous solution of surfactant followed by ZVI dechlorination of PCBs and 2) direct mixing with ZVI and surfactant solution. The second approach gave promising results for remediation

Adding vegetable oil emulsion stabilized by natrium oleat to hot bitumen enables bituminous binder foam expansion. By optimizing surfactant rate, water to oil ratio and water quantity, we formulated an emulsion allowing formation of bituminous foam and expansion ratio increase. This binder in foaming form, was used at a lower than 120°C temperature to prepare bituminous coatings or to reuse old bituminous coatings. The vegetable oil, part of the binder, should reactivate old bitumen. Some experiments carried out on old bituminous coatings have shown the potential of this new binder. An advanced analytical study with high resolution mass spectrometry have been carried out
