Laboratory model testing of single pile and superlong pile groups in saturated silty sand was conducted to investigate the response and bearing behavior of superlong pile groups with a high or low cap under vertical loads. The load transfer mechanism and bearing behavior of the pile shaft were discussed in detail. The load-settlement curve of the loaded superlong pile groups belongs to the type of gradual descent in silty sand. The transferred load decreased along the pile length during loading, but the gradients differed in different positions of the superlong pile group foundation with a high or low cap. The maximum shaft friction of the superlong pile groups with a high and low cap is about 2.5 times and 1.8 times, respectively, than that of the single pile. In addition, the tip resistance of the piles in the pile group foundation is about 2–3.5 times that of the single pile. The friction resistance of the superlong pile group foundation with a low cap was slightly larger than that of the high cap in the entire pile length, and two peaks and one peak, respectively, were observed. Under the ultimate load, the pile-soil maximum relative displacement of the friction on the pile side in the silty sand stratum was about 3% of the pile diameter. Under the ultimate load, the load sharing ratio of the pile side resistance of the two types of pile group foundations was about 60% of the total load. The load sharing ratios at the pile tip of the superlong pile groups with high and low caps are 40% and 33%. Furthermore, equations were proposed to determine the axial capacity of the superlong pile group based on the single pile bearing capacity and were applied to analyze the test pile. The calculated ultimate bearing capacity was similar to the measured value, with a maximum error of only 4.88%, thus validating the proposed method.

Superlenses made of plasmonic materials and metamaterials can image features at the subdiffraction scale. However, intrinsic losses impose a serious restriction on imaging resolution, a problem that has hindered widespread applications of superlenses. Optical waves of complex frequency that exhibit a temporally attenuating behavior have been proposed to offset the intrinsic losses in superlenses through the introduction of virtual gain, but experimental realization has been lacking because of the difficulty of imaging measurements with temporal decay. In this work, we present a multifrequency approach to constructing synthetic excitation waves of complex frequency based on measurements at real frequencies. This approach allows us to implement virtual gain experimentally and observe deep-subwavelength images. Our work offers a practical solution to overcome the intrinsic losses of plasmonic systems for imaging and sensing applications.

A two dimensional square lattice photonic crystal (PhC) formed by placing glass matrix in air is proposed for subwavelength imaging around 840 nm. The superlensing behavior at relatively lower wavelength compared to other reported PhC superlens is obtained by this configuration. Other advantages of using glass is that they have lower optical absorption at this wavelength and is relatively cheap. By placing the proposed PhC arrangement between the object and the objective of a conventional optical microscope, superlensing effect can be realized. Moreover, any change in radius of glass rod during fabrication process can result in the shift of superlensing wavelength.

Research on post-grouted drilled shafts has focused primarily on post-grouted tips. Here, four full-scale shaft load tests were conducted to investigate the behaviors and performance of combined tip-and-side grouted superlong and large-diameter drilled shafts in extra-thick fine sand layers. The enhanced mechanism of the combined grouted drilled shafts is analyzed, and a rational approach for analyzing their load–displacement response is presented. The side and base resistance of the combined grouted drilled shafts exhibited significant strengthening, substantially increasing the bearing capacity and effectively controlling settlement. Under the ultimate load, >60% of the shaft head displacement was caused by shaft compression; a relatively small load proportion was carried by the shaft base. The superlong and large-diameter drilled shaft can be treated as a friction shaft, and the combined tip-and-side grouting cannot change the bearing characteristics. The hyperbolic model describes the relationship between the side resistance and relative shaft–soil displacement and captures the base resistance–displacement response. The proposed approach is verified with a case history, and the bearing behaviors of a large-diameter drilled shaft under an extra-thick fine sand layer are analyzed. These results clarify the bearing characteristics of combined grouted shafts and can help guide the design of post-grouted shafts.

A new type of shuttle-shaped double-restrained buckling-restrained brace (SDR-BRB) is proposed, which adopts the form of a shuttle-shaped deformation section similar to its bending moment distribution as the external restraining system. The SDR-BRB has the advantages of superlong size, high load-carrying capacity, and lightweight components, and is suitable for use in large-span spatial structures and bridge structures with an exposed BRB. First, the calculation formula of the elastic buckling load of a pin-ended SDR-BRB is derived based on the equilibrium method, which is verified through the eigenvalue buckling analysis method, and the effects of the main geometric parameters on its elastic buckling behavior are evaluated. The effects of multiple key factors on the load-carrying capacity of the SDR-BRB are then studied by parametric analysis. The results show that the restraining ratio, initial imperfection, and gap have significant effects on the ultimate load-carrying capacity and overall stability of the SDR-BRB, while the effect of the diameter–thickness ratio is relatively small. On this basis, the fitting formula of the critical restraining ratio of the SDR-BRB considering the influences of initial imperfection and gap is proposed and verified by finite element analysis. The research lays a foundation for further research into the elastic–plastic hysteretic behavior and design method of an SDR-BRB.

Photonic crystals are inhomogeneous dielectric media with periodic variation of the refractive index. A photonic crystal gives us new tools for the manipulation of photons and thus has received great interests in a variety of fields. Photonic crystals also have applications in imaging. A number of imaging principles were demonstrated. In this thesis we focused,enhance the image resolution of photonic crystal by modification the surface structure and used the structure as a sensor. We utilize the superlens behaviour of the photonic crystal (PhC) structure composed of hexagonal lattice arrangement of air holes of radius ‘r = 0.35a’, where ‘a’ is the lattice constant, in a dielectric medium of permittivity ε = 12.The equal frequency contour (EFC) analysis done using plane wave expansion method shows that the structure exhibits an effective isotropic refractive index, neff = -1 at a normalized frequency of ɷ = 0.2908(2πc/a) for TM polarization, located in the second band. At ɷ = 0.2908(2πc/a) for TM polarization, the considered PhC structure behaves as a superlens, as analyzed using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method.

Abstract The aim of this paper is to describe and thermodynamically model cryogenic Stirling refrigerators, using Helium in its different forms as the working medium. Helium has unique properties at cryogenic temperatures forming a superfluid. The cryogenic Stirling refrigerators with Helium at such low temperatures make use of the properties of this superfluid nature of Helium, thus they are referred to as Superfluid Stirling Refrigerators (SSR). To make use of these remarkable properties of superfluid helium a different version of Stirling refrigerator is used where superleaks are introduced in the pistons in order to let the superfluid part flow freely but constrain the normal fluid. This cooling procedure has an upper temperature limit as it is based on the superfluidity of helium, hence all the workings of this cycle must be well below the Lambda line. In addition, different models are needed and are used for the different isotopes of helium as their atomic spin nature is different and therefore their behavior at temperatures near absolute zero. In this study of SSR cryocoolers great care is being given towards the thermodynamic behavior of the entire system and working media, as well as different designs of the apparatus.
