Ein kleiner aber alter Sumpf in Nordhessen wurde mit dem Schwerpunkt auf der Barber-Fallenmethode gesamtfaunistisch untersucht, insbesondere ein Schlankseggenried (Caricetum gracilis) und eine Flußgreiskrautflur (Senecionetum fluviatilis). Die rund 320 erfaßten Tierarten bauten qualitativ und quantitativ eine typische Sumpffauna auf. Auf dem Boden dominierten Asseln und Collembolen. Käfer und Dipteren stellten die meisten Arten. Darüber hinaus spiegeln sich die standörtlichen Eigenheiten des Gebietes bei Einbeziehung des Faunenbildes differenzierter wider als allein in einer pflanzensoziologischen Beschreibung. Es wurden einige faunistische Raritäten festgestellt, die z. T. individuenreich auftraten.

Abstract Radon sumps are widely used a remedial measures to reduce radon levels in houses and other buildings. In many cases they are very effective, but they do not always succeed. BRE have been working on models of the behaviour of sumps in order to understand better the way they operate, and why they might fail. This paper reports on results from a computational model of radon sumps, and compares its predictions with those from BRE field trials. A resistance to flow is used to characterise the behaviour of the whole sump, house and soil system, and a prediction for the likely heat cost of running a sump system is made. The results indicate that models can be useful in examining the effectiveness of sumps, and in optimising their design. However, without adequate information about the soil below a house it is not possible to predict with accuracy the way a sump would operate. This work shows we can characterise the behaviour of a sump system with a simple resistance to flow, and this should prove useful in choosing appropriate size fan for sumps. The results also enable us to predict the likely cost in heating terms of the additional ventilation caused by the sump system.

The current economic situation in the United States can be seen as the result of three factors. The first is the long-term shift to a neo-liberal order. The second factor is the US business cycle. Periods of economic expansion in the 1980s, the 1990s and the early 2000s were each brought to an end by increasingly severe crises, the most recent of which in 2007-2009 came perilously close to causing a collapse of the US financial system. The most recent expansion, which began in mid-2009, has been unusually weak, and is already relatively long by comparison with other recent expansions.The third factor is the presidency of Donald Trump which began in January 2017. Despite a populist rhetoric and the dependence of his electoral victory on mobilising white working-class support, in government he has pursued an unashamed series of measures which primarily benefit the very richest sectors of US society.

This project was initiated by Valérie Pozner (CNRS, Arias THALIM) and Alexandre Sumpf (University of Strasburg, ARCHE, CERCEC) and its goal was to go way further than studies on a couple ofSoviet war films uniformly quoted by authors dealing with the role of cinema during the “Great patriotic war”. Levee sump systems are used by many riverine communities for temporary storage of urban wet weather flows. The complex hydraulics and transport of stormwater pollutants in sump systems, however, have not been systematically studied. The objective of this work is to present a case study, utilizing a relatively simple and low-cost methodology, for assessing the hydraulic performance of flood control sumps in an urban watershed. Two sumps of highly variable physical and hydraulic characteristics were selected for analysis. HEC-1 software was used to estimate the flow hydrograph for each outfall to a sump as part of the overall flow balance, resulting in a total runoff hydrograph for a precipitation event. To validate HEC-1 results, a water balance was used to estimate the total runoff using sump operational data. The results suggest that HEC-1 calculation provide a satisfactory estimate of the total runoff and its time-distribution to the sump. The hydraulic model was then used to estimate nonpoint loads of selected heavy metals to the sump and to the river. Although flow of stormwater through a sump system is regulated solely by flood-control requirements, these sumps may function as sedimentation basins that provide purification of stormwater. An example calculation of removal of heavy metals in a sump using a mass balance approach is presented.

Abstract Two species of cyclopoid copepods are recorded in this study. (1) A new species of bomolochid, Orbitacolax brevispinus n. sp. (Crustacea) is described based on adult females collected from the gill filaments and inner surface of the opercula of red barracuda, Sphyraena pinguis Günther (Perciformes: Sphyraenidae), captured in Korean waters. The new species differs from its congeners by the possession of two pairs of spines on the dorsal surface of the cephalothorax located just posterior to the rostrum and a different setal formula on the distal exopodal segments of legs 2–4. (2) A taeniacanthid Cirracanthus inimici (Yamaguti et Yamasu, 1959) (Crustacea) is redescribed based on the specimens collected from the gill filaments and inner surface of the opercula of devil stinger, Inimicus japonicus (Cuvier) (Scorpaeniformes: Synancellidae). This finding is the first record in Korean waters and the first description of male. A checklist of parasitic copepods of the families Bomolochidae Sumpf, 1871 and Taeniacanthidae Wilson, 1911of Korea is also provided.

The EU Green Deal sets challenging goals for cities, including a 90% reduction in Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from transport by 2050. This requires an integrated and coordinated approach to urban mobility planning, represented by Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), and encouraged by European legislation. However, the experience of cities with SUMPs varies substantially among the EU Member States. Using qualitative and quantitative methods of data analysis, this paper aims to explore the institutional settings, practices, and barriers to sustainable mobility in Czech cities and differences between cities with and without a SUMP. The data were collected using interviews and an online questionnaire survey among stakeholders who substantially influence the urban planning praxis. The data reveal that monitoring, evaluation, and public involvement are underestimated by analyzed cities and the perception of a need for a significant transport behavior change is still quite low among local politicians. A SUMP brings substantial benefits to Czech cities of all sizes, even in the initial phase of its implementation. The cities that have developed a SUMP apply various sustainable transport measures more often, create more participation activities, and are better at evaluation than cities without a SUMP.

These plans aim to strike a balance between the prevalent use of private cars and alternative modes of transport. A pivotal aspect of SUMP formulation lies in the identification of indicators, serving as tools for cities to assess their mobility systems and strategically address strengths and weaknesses. The European Commission provides a set of reliable indicators for standardized assessments, ensuring uniform data collection. Despite the importance of SUMPs, cities often lack consistent political and institutional support for their integration into urban development plans. Additionally, disparities exist in the application of methodologies for data collection in defining SUMP indicators. This paper thoroughly analyzes the indicator identification process within the SUMP creation framework. It highlights the need for continuous political backing and institutional support for SUMP projects within urban development plans. Furthermore, the paper addresses the variations in applying methodologies for data collection, emphasizing the importance of standardization. The focus is on the European Commission's indicators, providing practical insights into their application for a more uniform assessment of mobility systems. The research contributes by presenting a refined method for data collection, encompassing both basic and additional SUMP indicators. The study also introduces an in-depth analysis of modal distribution, offering a valuable resource for cities interested in formulating new SUMPs. By enhancing our understanding of these critical aspects, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on sustainable urban mobility and supports the development of more effective and harmonized transportation planning strategies.

The vortex generated around the suction region of the pump sump causes problems such as damage to the pump, increased maintenance costs, and failure to supply coolant smoothly. Therefore, analyzing vortices is essential in pump sump design. However, the CFD analysis alone is insufficient in pump sumps vortex analysis since the reliability of the results is doubtful in scaled model tests. This study conducted the model test to validate a suitable CFD simulation method by identifying the Type 2 vortex among the three types of subsurface vortices. The dye test and PIV technology were used to visualize the Type 2 subsurface vortices, whereas the PIV vorticity results were then compared to the CFD results. The average vorticity of 60.2 (1/s) was identified as the reference level of Type 2 subsurface vortices formation by mapping the dye test results with the PIV vorticity results. Furthermore, the average vorticities of 84.63 (1/s) and 85.15 (1/s) were recorded in the presence of Type 2 subsurface vortices in PIV and CFD, respectively, and these values can be applied to the designing of pump sumps.

A new hot-salt pump has been developed for molten-salt solar power tower applications that will reduce the capital cost of the plant, eliminate many of the piping, valve and sump problems associated with the handling of molten salt, and improve the reliability of a critical part of the operating system of the plant. Previous systems required that the pumps in these plants be housed in shallow sumps that were gravity fed by the storage tanks. This new pump arrangement will eliminate the sump level-control valves and the potential for overflowing the pump sump vessels. Until now, only cantilever pumps were qualified for hot molten-salt service because no suitable bearing materials had been tested. This paper describes the successful qualification of a long-shafted pump with salt-lubricated bearings tested for over 5000 hours with nitrate salt at 565°C.

Streszczenie:

Wastewater is purified by mechanical, biological, physicochemical and chemical methods. Mechanical treatment plants are the main stage of treatment and remove most of the harmful substances contained in wastewater. The mechanical treatment facilities include a sand trap, a sump, a hydrocyclone, a grid, etc. Among them, the most common and basic design are sumps, which are divided into types according to design and function. In this article, a new mathematical model for calculating vertical sediments used in local treatment for small enterprises has been improved, and design parameters have been calculated. Theoretical studies of the proposed sump were carried out on the basis of molecular kinetic theory, and its accuracy was verified by the author in experimental tests. In the sump, an expression for the distribution of the concentration of suspended solids in wastewater was found. Thus, a filter structure with a filtration efficiency above 60% was created.

Two new species of Taeniacanthus Sumpf, 1871 (Copepoda, Taeniacanthidae) are described from filefishes (Monacanthidae) caught in the Indo-West Pacific region: T. brayae n. sp. from Pervagor melanocephalus (Bleeker) collected from five localities within the Central Indo-Pacific realm and T. mcgroutheri n. sp. from Monacanthus chinensis (Osbeck) and Paramonacanthus choirocephalus (Bleeker) caught off the Australian coast. Taeniacanthus brayae n. sp. and T. mcgroutheri n. sp. are distinguished from their congeners by the presence of an elongate terminal endopodal segment of the antenna, a spinulated terminal process and one seta on the maxillary basis, six elements on the terminal exopodal segment of legs 2–4 and an armature of II, I, 2 and II, I, 1 on the terminal endopodal segments of legs 2 and 3, respectively. Taeniacanthus brayae n. sp. can be readily distinguished from T. mcgroutheri n. sp. by having one row (rather than multiple rows) of spinules on the large pectinate process of the antenna, four setae (rather than three) on the maxillule and a 3-segmented (rather than 2-segmented) endopod on legs 2–4. New host and/or locality records for the taeniacanthids Cirracanthus monacanthi (Yamaguti, 1939), C. spinosus Dojiri & Cressey, 1987, Nudisodalis acicula Dojiri & Cressey, 1987 and Taeniacanthus aluteri (Avdeev, 1977) parasitic on triggerfishes and filefishes, as well as supplementary morphological information for the females and the first descriptions of the males of C. monacanthi, C. spinosus and N. acicula, are also included.

Abstract There is strong evidence both internationally and in Ireland that the correct installation of passive prevention systems in new buildings is the most cost-effective way of protecting the population against radon. Previous work considering membranes, granular fill material in the aggregate layer beneath the slab and sump system has been conducted in Ireland to improve the protection of buildings from radon. The implications of research on passive sumps potential to reduce radon concentrations are significant, as if it can be shown that the installation of passive sumps in Irish building is effective; this could constitute a low-cost, passive, sustainable method for minimizing radon levels in buildings. On-going experimental tests investigating the performance of different common cowls used for passive soil depressurization systems are presented, in addition to the impact of different vertical heights and horizontal lengths of pipe with a number of bends investigated.

Corruption is a constant dilemma that challenges societies and manifests itself differently in every state and civilization. This phenomenon has disastrous consequences on the economy and society. After clarifying the different approaches to corruption, this paper sheds light on the types of corruption and its causes. Sources of corruption can lie in the weakness of the rule of law, judiciary, internal control system, and low wages (Sumpf, Araji, & Crompton, 2016). This paper also examines important anti-corruption instruments such as international and regional organizations, and governmental and non-governmental bodies. It intends to review the state of corruption at the national level and how Jordan and Iraq tackled corruption by analyzing the data of the reports published by the transparency organization and the local authorities: the Jordanian Integrity and Anti-Corruption Commission and the Iraqi Federal Commission of Integrity. The aim is to show what these nations have done on a domestic level to fulfill the international requirement to reduce corruption. This study found that most anti-corruption laws are laws to establish relevant bodies and departments, but they are not special laws to combat corruption crimes. Moreover, although Iraq and Jordan joined international and regional conventions to combat corruption, they have not been fully successful in curbing it. The main recommendations based on these findings are to increase the role of international and local monitoring agencies, enforce written laws, and enhance cooperation between agencies. Arab countries must establish clear public policies and strategies for combating corruption.

This work uses a commercial computational fluid dynamics code to predict three-dimensional (3D) vortex flows in a large centrifugal-pump station under construction in China and proposes relevant vortex-eliminating schemes. Because of the complex nature of the vortex flows in sumps, different turbulence models, namely, standard k–ε, re-normalization group k–ε and realizable k–ε models, are first used to investigate their feasibility in predicting flows in a small physical model of an open pump sump, and various vortex streamlines and strength in the sump are predicted, analysed, and compared with the experimental data. The comparisons show that the realizable k–ε model predicts the position and strength of free-surface, sidewall-attached, and floor-attached vortices more accurately than the other two models. Then, the realizable k–ε model is used here to investigate 3D vortex flows in a large pumping-station sump. All the various vortices, such as free-surface, wall-attached vortices, are successfully predicted. Thus, based on the information of location, shape, size, and strength of the calculated vortices, three types of vortex-eliminating devices are proposed and their corresponding vortex suppression effects are analysed. These results will be used as reference for the safe and stable operation of the Hui–Nan–Zhuang pumping station in the future.

Based on the 2018, there a mining plan, two temporary sumps, namely the ABC and BCD sumps. They located in a mining sequence pattern. These sumps required a mud loading process prior to mining the coal below the sequence. The mud loading process is loaded sequentialy. However, the problem occurs when the mud loading process in the ABC sump is delayed, and resulted only 42% of mud production. Such the delay resulted in hindering the mining sequence pattern which forced changes in plans, designs, and decrease of coal production. These condition led to study the cause, impact, and alternative solution of the delay during mud loading process. The method used in this study includes direct observations and data collection of working conditions, equipment capabilities, material properties, and operation timeline. In this study, the statistical analysis is used to determine the cause and effect of delayed mud loading process. A Minex Software is then used to simulate the alternative of redesign the mining sequence pattern. The study found that the delay in mud loading process is due to the external and internal factors, that result in underproduction of coal only 505,833 tons, and delayed of coal production around 64 days. An alternative that can be conducted is to change the direction progress to the area that has low stripping ratio. Factors that can hinder the progress are need to be considered for anticipating the plan distraction at mid-term-plan.

PT. Vale Indonesia plans to mine at the Petea location using the open pit method. If viewed from the watershed boundary, the planned mining location is located in the upstream part of the Lamunto watershed. In connection with the existence of the mining plan, a solution is required to prevent things that can harm and damage the surrounding environment prior to implementation, especially related to soil erosion which is expected to impact the Lamunto watershed which is the outlet of the planned mining location. The method used in this study is to analyse the potential for erosion that occurs using the USLE (Universal Soil Loss Equation) method with the help of the ArcGIS application. Furthermore, the calculation of the sedimentation rate is carried out using the SDR (Sediment Delivery Ratio) equation based on the calculated erosion rate and the area of the mining plan that will be used to plan the sump (sediment storage tank). The results showed that the total sediment potential in sumps A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H was 550.39 m3/year, 1195.31 m3/year, 1588.43 m3/year, 1908, 27 m3/year, 2423.33 m3/year, 1899.53 m3/year, 1941.76 m3/year, 2169.15 m3/year and 2756.29 m3/year, respectively. From these results it can be seen that the slope factor (LS) is more influential than the catchment area in calculating the sediment potential as evidenced by the total sediment potential in sump D which is greater than sump F.
