Streszczenie:
Today’s critical discourses and theorizing vanguards agree on the importance of getting lost, of failure, of erring — as do life coaches and business gurus. The taste for a departure from progress and other teleologies, the fascination with disorder, unfocused modes of attention, or improvisational performances cut across wide swaths of scholarly and activist discourses, practices in the arts, but also in business, warfare, and politics. Yet often the laudible failures are only those that are redeemed by subsequent successes. What could it mean to think errancy beyond such restrictions? And what would a radical critique of productivity, success, and fixed determination look like that doesn’t collapse into the infamous ‘I would prefer not to’? This volume looks for an answer in the complicated word field branching and stretching from the Latin errāre. Its contributions explore the implications of embracing error, randomness, failure, non-teleological temporalities across different disciplines, discourses, and practices, with critical attention to the ambivalences such an impossible embrace generates.

This chapter explores the representation of women in UN peacebuilding discourse that the author has curated and outlines the various ways in which women are associated with, and determined as subjects by, peace and security practices. The chapter develops an analysis of women as victims of violence and the representation of women as “agents of change,” with particular reference to the constitution of women’s economic agency, and the construction of women as rights-bearing subjects upon whom various expectations are placed in the peacebuilding context. The author argues, ultimately, that the association of women with civil society, and the depoliticization of their roles as economic actors, even as great emphasis is placed on the centrality of women’s empowerment to peacebuilding success, function to heavily circumscribe women’s meaningful participation in peacebuilding.

This chapter translates an address by Justo Sierra, in which he suggests that many of Mexico’s problems are problems with national education: “The University, then, will have sufficient power to coordinate the guiding principles of national character.” Like Antonio Caso, he believes that “[t]‌o cultivate wills in order to harvest egoists would be the bankruptcy of pedagogy.” For Sierra, one’s education should be grounded in or be attentive to national circumstances: “No, the University is not a person destined never to turn its eyes away from the telescope or microscope even if the nation is falling apart around it.” And he suggests that the production of knowledge should be affirmative and original. Finally, despite his earlier sympathy with positivism, which dismisses speculative metaphysics as a source of knowledge, Sierra suggests that the success of national education requires reintroducing philosophy or metaphysics.

This chapter examines sustainable development, an integrating discourse covering environmental issues from the local to the global, as well as a host of economic and development concerns. Sustainable development is different from Promethean discourse because it requires coordinated collective efforts to achieve goals, rather than relying on human spontaneity and ingenuity. It is also different from environmental problem solving discourses because it is much more imaginative in its reconceptualization of the terms of environmental dispute and in its dissolution of some long-standing conflicts. After explaining what sustainable development is, the chapter provides a historical background on the concept. It then considers the discourse analysis of sustainable development and concludes by reflecting on the prospects for the success or failure of sustainable development.

This chapter reviews the assumptions that the literature makes about the role that mobilizing networks and discourse framing play in sustaining and achieving a social movement’s objectives. It compares these assumptions to the development of the Zapatista movement. Using illustrations from Zapatismo, the chapter shows how despite lacking opportunities for success, mobilizing opportunities can be enough for a movement to construct a transnational solidarity network of support to maintain its campaign. In doing so, it also highlights the long-term effects of transnational organizations in shaping a local movement’s discourse through time, which in turn may contribute to the movement’s survival. The ability of the movement to reframe its discourse also enables it to adapt to changing national and international political environments.

The mobilization by young people in the Russian Federation illuminates an important part of the stabilization of the country’s authoritarian regime structures from 2005 to 2011. First the political developments of the episode are contextualized by contrasting the regime’s insecurity in 2005 with the situation by 2011. After discussing the socio-political context of young people during the post-Soviet transition years, the chapter explores the findings from the discourse network analysis. Public discourse and political mobilization interact and the chapter discusses the spectrum of politically involved youth from pro-Kremlin groups to the very diverse opposition, including liberal democratic movements, fascists, and communists. It is argued that the regime’s success in capturing control over youth discourse and young people was critical in the consolidation of Vladimir Putin’s power.

Since its inception, social science has spawned a succession of theories that purport to explain differential rates of ethnic mobility as a byproduct of the cultural values of the groups themselves. The fatal flaw of these theories is that they reify culture by failing to examine its anchorage in history and social structure, eliding the very factors that produce and reproduce these value systems. This chapter critiques two theoretical propositions that currently pervade both popular and scholarly discourses: the projection of Asian Americans as “a model minority” and the supposition that black underachievement is the result of “acting white.” It is argued that these theories provide epistemic justification for the cleavages of race and class that continue to rend American society.

This chapter tackles the issue of how success was defined and measured in the modernization-diffusion paradigm by focusing on three early projects for using the technology of television for teaching purposes, along with their distinct outcomes. It asks how communication as well as information and communication technologies (ICTs) achieve their goals of social change and how we can demonstrate their success. It also explores the working assumptions of educational technology within the general communication for development (c4d) discourse before discussing the three educational television initiatives in more detail, all of them implemented by Stanford University's Institute for Communication Research and involving Wilbur Schramm: the first in American Samoa, the second in El Salvador, and the third in Mexico. These projects illustrate some of the common problems with many c4d projects.

This chapter discusses the nature of English as a lingua franca (ELF) as uniquely complex ‘second order language contact’, which arises from contact between ‘similects’ of speakers from given first language backgrounds. The data is drawn from speech in academic communities. ELF is best understood as operating on three levels: the macro-social, the micro-social, and the cognitive. English as a lingua franca is largely similar to English as a native language in comparable social circumstances, but it also manifests lexico-grammatical features that are clearly different: nonstandard grammatical and lexical forms are relatively common, together with lexical simplification in a statistical sense. As speakers make competent use of discourse phenomena for communicative success, it seems that lexico-grammatical accuracy may be less crucial to communication. The findings lend support to modelling language processes as discourse-driven, fuzzy and approximate, with a high level of tolerance for variability in form.

This chapter takes up with the healed self, the newly “conscious” change-agent, now interpellated as global “citizen” as he and she move from inner work to externalized work in the world. It focuses on social reform and the idea of “good capitalism” in LOHAS narratives. Capitalism must be exonerated in LOHAS culture, and to do so means that certain perceptions and practices that have been treated as economic and cultural axioms need to be reworked. LOHAS begins with the idea of success. The chapter investigates how the texts attempt to juggle a new meaning of success that entails doing with less—but better things—while still promoting the interests of capital. It historicizes LOHAS discourse to reveal how it is informed by various social movements including early American Christian Reform, the European Green Party of the 1960s, and the social movements occurring in the 1960s in the United States, including environmentalism, feminism, and civil rights.

This chapter shows that pantomime undermines the ostensible dichotomy of art and text by engaging in visual narration. It examines the perception of dance as a superior form of rhetoric, arguing that Lucian’s On Dancing cleverly deploys traditional ideals of rhetorical versatility (Proteus and the octopus) to show that the dancer embodies them more perfectly than the orator, because his skill is physical. The dancer’s body language is situated in the context of ancient theories of gesture and physiognomy as well as in the discourse on works of art (ekphrasis), from which the motif of silent speech and the use of notions such as ēthos and pathos are adopted. Finally, the chapter examines the possible role of Hellenistic sculptural groups emphasizing motion and narrative developments in preparing the path for pantomime’s empire-wide success.

The work by the Dutch physician and classical scholar Hadrianus Junius represents another type of Renaissance word study of a pan-European nature. Junius had compiled the Latin vocabulary core of more than fifty subject fields necessary for professional and scholarly discourse and presented this in a topical arrangement for his educated readers. The Latin headwords were followed by correspondences in Greek and translations in five vernaculars (German, Flemish, French, Italian, and Spanish). The great success of this multilingual topical dictionary prompted John Higgins to produce an edition for the English market: the 1585 edition includes Latin, Greek, French, and English. The chapter explores Higgins’ translation style and his sources for terms in areas of special knowledge, and shows that he introduced a substantial number of new coinages into the English language.

For Symeon, Christianity is first and foremost a transformative experience of the divine, beginning in this life in response to the Gospel and scripture, mediated in the practices of the church, and brought to a fitting climax in the world to come. The epistemic corollary involves a particular conception of theological discourse, a vision of epistemic failure and struggle, and a grounding of theological claims in transformative perception of the divine as depicted in scripture and in the great dogmas of the canonical faith of the church. His epistemic orientation thus focuses on our epistemic faculties or capacities, their repair through divine action and grace, and their success in securing accurate depictions of the triune God. The chapter concludes with six questions and issues that deserve further investigation.

This chapter points at the relocation of theology through the twentieth century out of universities and ‘public thought’ towards privatized and ‘dissenting’ spaces. These include anti-colonialist and proto-nationalist movements in East Africa, India, and Korea, whereby religion became one means by which subaltern groups maintained their identity over and against a ruling class. In other settings, such as in post-war Minjung theology in Korea, indigenized theology became a means of re-wiring the political discourse as the new nation emerged from war into settings requiring rapid industrialization and modernization. Such popular mobilizations from below are compared to elite, institutional attempts at change from above, and are analysed using the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu to tease out those factors which contribute to success in spreading out of the cultures and ‘moments’ of primary indigenization.

This chapter focuses on the rise of the critical or dependency paradigm in Latin America and the success of its theories but somewhat limited applications over a period from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s. It first examines the context of the paradigm shift that paved the way for a new theory in the discourse of communication and social change, and how that may have affected practice. It then considers how the dependency approach to communication for development (c4d) first came into favor in Latin America. It also discusses the dependency paradigm in theory and practice and Everett Rogers's critique of the old or dominant paradigm, which he articulated in the book Communication and Development: Critical Perspectives (1976a). The chapter concludes by demonstrating how practice and critical theory came together in a government project in Tanzania's ujamaa villages.

This chapter tells the history of Mexican colonization policy through the nineteenth century to provide a detailed context to understand the integration of Chinese immigration. Attention to national colonization reforms shows how racial ideology governed the relationship between land, indigenous people, and the state. With a large population and rich resources government officials blamed the lack of economic success on the racial inferiority of the majority indigenous population. When the political elites of Porfirio Diaz’s regime turned to Chinese immigration to address what they perceived as the republic’s racial deficiency they initiated a political drama that would shape the coming revolution in 1910 and deeply influence the reconstruction of the Mexican racial state. Because recruited Chinese labor was designed to alter the relationship between territory, Indians, and the government, racialized discourse about the Chinese reached right into the heart of Mexican politics.

Introducing a detailed discussion of the modernization or transition thesis, this chapter argues that understandings of anticorruption did indeed change dramatically around 1800. The revolutionaries declared war on corruption and deemed practices that had been common during the Ancien Régime—especially patronage and the use of public positions for private gain—as corrupt. The consequences of this for anticorruption were far-reaching: the public and the private were more sharply separated and all “old” practices (or recent ones construed as such) were attacked with “new” anticorruption rules. The belief grew that corruption could be eliminated. However, the chapter tells a non-linear story: the essential ambivalence of modernization is fully reflected in anticorruption discourse and efforts. The more closely modern societies are looking for corruption, the more corruption they will find. As the transgression of the public-private-boundary is unavoidable, the success even of present-day campaigns is very limited.

Burning Daylight reflects the personal and political contradictions in Jack London’s work in terms of his own version of the “American Adam” discourse. Taking well-known elements from London’s fiction such as the Klondike narrative, the urban nightmare of capitalist corruption, and the new Edenic promise of a now defunct Jeffersonian ideal available to only the privileged few, the novel exhibits both the failure of the American dream of material success as well as the fantastic premises behind the agrarian dream. The hero passes from innocence into urban decline but experiences a regeneration via a romantic union with the “ideal woman” and a return to a much more positive version of the wilderness within which he earlier thrived. Yet Daylight’s nightmare vision of a return of the repressed capitalist economy within his “Promised Land” reveals that total escape from American industrialism and economic pollution of the land is problematic at best.

A favorite with critics intent on theorizing a female literature in Chinese, Eileen Chang’s works offer fertile ground for investigating the gender politics of representation. Ironically for one of the most acclaimed twentieth-century Chinese writers, Chang was obsessed with failure. Although failure is fascinating precisely because of its unpredictability—one can fall short of or deviate from the definition of success in such a multiplicity of ways that it is difficult to generalize—we can note that it is often through failure and a panoply of negative emotions that Chang calls gender and sexual norms into question. In another twist, Chang’s fascination with failure manifests itself as a repeated exploration of the romantic, moral, and political failings of the modern girl, an exploration that implicitly responds to the discourse on the shortcomings of the modern girl that ran rampant in the Chinese media throughout the 1930s–1940s.

Understanding the musical collaboration behind Selznick’s films does not require embracing every one of the producer’s decisions—some missed their mark. But Selznick’s productions do invite a re-evaluation of dominant prejudices in film-music discourse regarding, the involvement of a non-musicians in the scoring process, the sharing of compositional duties among multiple personnel, and film music’s relationship to commercial interests. These factors are crucial to understanding music’s function in Selznick’s films and its success within films and beyond. Although Selznick’s emphasis on film music reflected priorities born of prestige filmmaking (and literary adaptations in particular), his musical ideas spread far beyond these categories in the hands of other filmmakers. A concluding section shows that the mosaic-like construction of scores for Selznick presents not a crisis of authorship, but rather an opportunity to assess the dynamic and messy collaborations that produced some of Hollywood’s most memorable scores.

This book examines the ways that partisan and nonpartisan online, broadcast, and print news outlets constructed the Tea Party through branding discourse and used it to address modern conflicts over race, class, gender, journalism, and politics. From the beginning of President Barack Obama’s presidency, the Tea Party was a major player in a tale of political fractiousness, populist dissent, racial progress, and surprising electoral success, and changed the tone, tenor, and shape of the political landscape through the support and promotion of the press. Despite a long history of conservative movements in US politics, the Tea Party distinctively placed the news media at its center as both an organizer and active participant. Through a discursive, narrative, and rhetorical analysis of the news reporting about the Tea Party movement, this book documents the contemporary slippages between news platforms, journalistic practice, and the norms that guide the fourth estate.

In such discourse, monologism is treated as natural and dialogism becomes the project that requires the most effort—the emergent, fragile attempt that can never fully succeed. It offers examples from sources as diverse as John Wesley’s advice for preaching, Kim Jong-il’s lethal efforts to make all North Koreans speak in a single voice, a wistful Papua New Guinea man’s claim that in the old days people did not speak so much, and an Australian archbishop’s puzzling declaration that dialogue does not require a willingness to compromise.

Is the familiar left–right bipolar model of the ideological spectrum still relevant to political interpretations of national sports policies in the post-Communist age? This chapter describes what some may regard as a “post-ideological,” namely, post–Cold War, political world in which governments around the world offer political rationales for the instrumental use of sport. This chapter argues that there is a political doctrine governing the professed or actual use of sport by national governments that is so widespread and fundamental that it persists independently of traditional left–right political ideologies. These policies and their goals are quite uniform across the globe. There is a modern sports-functional orthodoxy that government officials everywhere feel they must adhere to that promises elite success plus public benefits. This functionalist discourse of sport is a state-sanctioned ideology that promotes the value of sport as a resource for implementing various forms of social engineering.

Streszczenie:
What makes for a good education? What does one need to count as well educated? Knowledge, to be sure. But knowledge is easily forgotten, and today’s knowledge may be obsolete tomorrow. Skills, particularly in critical thinking, are crucial as well. But absent the right motivation, graduates may fail to put their skills to good use. In this book, Nathan King argues that intellectual virtues—traits like curiosity, intellectual humility, honesty, intellectual courage, and open-mindedness—are central to any education worthy of the name. Further, such virtues are crucial to our functioning well in everyday life, in areas as diverse as personal relationships, responsible citizenship, civil discourse, and personal success. Our struggles in these areas often result from a failure to think virtuously. Drawing upon recent work in philosophy and psychology, the book paints a portrait of virtuous intellectual character—and of the vices such a character opposes. Filled with examples and applications, this book introduces readers to the intellectual virtues: what they are, why they matter, and how we can grow in them.

Digital technologies are exerting a growing influence on the lives of children and teenagers: from video monitoring of babies and educational robots in nursery school to AI-powered learning assistants used to guarantee individual success in education. However, issues relating to privacy, surveillance and data protection are seldom reflected on with regard to this sensitive and important social sphere. The majority of these applications generate data which reveal a great deal about the adolescents who use them. This study addresses this subject area. Together with practitioners from the field of education and with the goal of laying the foundations for addressing this issue in both academic and (socio-) political discourse, it depicts interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary exchange that extends beyond disciplines and academic borders.
