The current study assessed the factorial structure of the Study Process Questionnaire with 532 American university students. The questionnaire, developed in Australia by J. B. Biggs, measures three approaches to learning and studying identified as Surface, Deep, and Achieving. Each approach is comprised of a motive and a strategy subscale. Factor analysis for the American sample supported Biggs' three primary approaches to learning (accounting for almost 70% of the distributed variance). The motive and strategy subcomponents, however, were not as clearly differentiated. Implications for further research with the questionnaire are discussed.

A number of studies show that studenents' approaches to learning are important elements to achieve success. Learning approache provides perspectives on the characterisics of good learners. Using R-SPQ-2F (Biggs, Kember, & Leung, 2001), a revised version of Biggs'(1987) Study Process Questionnaire (SPQ), this study attempted to explore the learning approaches of first year students of 2013 academic year at the Faculty of Language and Literature, of Satya Wacana Christian University. The purpose of the study was to find out if there was a correlation between the students' approaches to learning and their achievement in the Integrated Course (IC), and the profile of their approaches to learning English in the first semester. From 151 respondents participated in this study, it was found that, although weak, there was a positive correlation between students’ achievement scores and Deep Approach and a negative correlation between their IC scores and Surface Approach. This study also found that Deep Motive was associated with the students' achievement. However, from the findings of the students' profile based on SPQ indicated that the study could not predict the students at risk. Other factors could have affected the students' achievement in their learning.

The reliability and validity of the Study Process Questionnaire were investigated for 246 United Arab Emirates college students. Analysis provided satisfactory estimates of internal consistency and stability over a 4-wk. period. Results of factor analysis followed by oblique rotation of the six subscales supported the factor structure underlying the questionnaire. In addition, surface approach correlated negatively with students' GPAs and deep and achieving approaches correlated positively with students' GPAs, indicating that the questionnaire approaches were valid in predicting college academic performance. These findings lend support to the reliability and validity of the questionnaire as a measure of studying and learning. In sum, the present investigation provides some evidence suggesting that this instrument can be used with some confidence with subjects other than Australian university students when students are influenced by different traditions, practices, and educational systems.

This research examined the impact of students’ demographic background on the study process of public and private university students. The Revised Two Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) consisting of 20 items was used to collect data from 217 conveniently selected participants from public and private universities. To answer the research questions, descriptive statistics, an independent sample t-test, and a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were employed. The research findings indicate that regardless of university types, students tend to use the deep approach (M = 2.685) of learning more compared to the surface approach (M = 1.928). The researchers have found statistically significant differences between study approach and gender, types of universities, fields of study, academic level, year(s) of study and ethnicity. The research results reveal that demographic background has a significant influence on students’ approaches to learning. In terms of university type, the results indicated that students at public universities preferred the deep method of learning more (M = 2.809, SD = 0.515) than students at private universities (M = 2.537, SD = 0.581).

The study employed the descriptive method of research with the questionnaires as the gathering tools. This method was used to gather necessary information regarding the communication process implemented at the Mandaue City College in Mandaue City, Cebu. The research subjects of the study were the second-year college students of Bachelor of Elementary Education college students of Mandaue City College. This study utilized a researcher-made survey questionnaire as the main tool in gathering the necessary data. The indicators on the questionnaire were based on the theories and principles of communication process and understanding by Wiggins and McTighe. The researcher prepared a questionnaire for the college students and the other for the college teachers. The questionnaire determines the level of competence of the college students in the communication process. It also includes the methods and the instructional materials used by the teachers in enhancing the communication process. The validation was done by having this instrument answered by 10 or 10 percent of the final number of college student respondents. This validating group was not part of the final group who provided the answers to the questions asked. Moreover, in relation to the level of competence of the student and teacher respondents in the communication process, it is exemplified that the college students are better at explaining compared to interpreting and applying. It is also revealed that the college teachers utilize varied teaching methods and techniques to the students in tertiary education. Furthermore, the following recommendations are hereby suggested: (1) The proposals of this study are presented to the administration of Mandaue City College for implementation and application in actual classroom practice. (2) The college students' interpreting skills be strengthened through the teacher’s employment of varied and engaging strategies to develop their ability to interpret critically. (3) Teachers should employ exercises that would develop their students’ applying skills through written and oral exercises.

This study provides preliminary evidence for the validity of the Bahasa Indonesian version of the Study Process Questionnaire (BI-SPQ) from a sample of 147 psychology students (22 men and 125 women; M age = 21.8 yr., SD=1.3). The internal consistency alpha of the BI-SPQ subscales were found to range from .46 (Surface Strategy) to .77 (Deep Strategy), with a median of .67. Principal component analysis indicated a two-factor solution, where the Deep and Achieving subscales loaded onto Factor 1 and the Surface subscales loaded on Factor 2. Students' GPAs were associated negatively with Surface Motive ( r = −.24) and were associated positively with Deep and Achieving Motives ( rs = .20). Further studies with larger samples involving students majoring in other disciplines are needed to provide further evidence of the validity of the BI-SPQ.

Regardless of the trend of using the patient-centred approach in (in)fertility clinics, there has been no research on satisfaction with medical staff care in Serbia yet. Accordingly, the main aim of this study is to examine the metric characteristics of the first quantitative instrument for measuring satisfaction with this type of support in Serbia - the Medical Support Assessment Questionnaire. A total of 87 women, currently facing the problem of infertility, participated in the study. The reliability of the Questionnaire is high and amounts to .96, expressed through the Kronbach's Alpha coefficient.. Using the Principal Components Method, the one-factor solution is obtained. An additional aim of the study is to examine satisfaction levels with different aspects of support. The best rated aspect of the medical staff support refers to technical skills and competencies for treatment implementation, while the worst rated aspects include emotional support by the medical staff and patient education about the emotional effects of treatment. Furthermore, the results indicate that there is no statistically significant difference in these estimates depending on the length of infertility or age of participants. The findings show that medical staff is still focused on the medical aspects of the treatment and its effectiveness instead of focusing on a holistic, patient-centred approach. These open up the space for working on integrating a holistic approach into fertility clinics in Serbia. In addition, the results highlight the importance of having an effective and reliable instrument for measuring satisfaction with medical support for the purposes of monitoring and improving the ART clinics service.

Streszczenie:
This paper explores the relationship between refunctionalization and usage frequency. In particular, it argues that (a) refunctionalization is more likely for low-frequency construction than high-frequency constructions, and that (b) high-frequency patterns are more likely candidates as models for refunctionalization processes than low-frequency patterns. It proposes that folk etymology processes be characterized as a type of refunctionalization process because in folk etymology, obsolescent and semantically void morphemes are replaced with morphemes that actually serve a function in language. This assumption allows for an empirical investigation of refunctionalization using an exploratory questionnaire study. The results indicate that usage frequency indeed plays a role in folk etymology processes, and consequently, refunctionalization. In particular, participants were more likely to accept false etymologies when the proposed etymon had a high usage frequency than when it had a low usage frequency. In summary, the present study proposes a way to study refunctionalization processes in synchrony.

Students’ approaches to learning can vary between students of different ages, genders, years, degrees, or cultural contexts. The aim of this study was to assess the approaches to learning of different students of life science degrees. The Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) has been used to assess the approaches to learning of 505 students of thirteen different subjects of four different degrees at Universitat Politècnica de València in order to study the factors that influence their approaches. Results show a higher deep approach of the students. Differences were observed between subjects and gender, not related to level (bachelor or master) or year. The item reliability analysis showed a high consistency for the main scales, but not for the secondary scales of the R-SPQ-2F questionnaire. High correlation between the deep and surface scales were observed. These data can provide more information to the teachers, which may help them to develop strategies focused on promoting a deeper approach to learning for the students, more adapted to their subject, level, and year.

Objective The operationalization of the concepts of shame and guilt poses a challenge not only for research participants attempting to analyze these emotions, but also for psychologists themselves. Scenario-based questionnaires offer a solution to this problem. This article describes the process of adapting the TOSCA-3 questionnaire to the Polish language. Method The TOSCA-3 questionnaire was adapted to Polish based on the international recommendations for the cultural adaptation of psychometric questionnaires. A pilot study was conducted using the newly adapted TOSCA-3 questionnaire, the SWLS questionnaire, the MCSDS self-report questionnaire, and the EPQ-R(S) questionnaire. The study was conducted on a random sample of 148 people. Results The obtained results (means, standard deviations, and Cronbach’s α) were satisfactory, which points to the psychometric validity of the adapted questionnaire. The validation process revealed lower life satisfaction among people who are more prone to experience shame (r = ‒.177; p < .05), whereas the scores of subjects who are more prone to experience guilt confirmed a positive correlation with the results obtained on the social approval-seeking scale (MCSDS; r = .38; p < .05). Furthermore, the scores on extraversion and neuroticism scales were correlated with shame proneness (r = ‒.25; p < .05 and r = .40; p < .05, respectively). Conclusions The statistical analysis confirmed that the TOSCA-3 questionnaire was reliably translated and adapted to the Polish language. The results of the pilot study suggest that the adaptation process was successful. The tool can be used in research. However, the collected data do not support analyses of factor relevance or the development of standards for individual diagnoses. The results of the pilot validation study make a valuable contribution to the scientific debate on shame and guilt proneness which are rarely discussed in the Polish literature.

This article describes the whole picture of Japan HOspice and Palliative Care Evaluation Study 3 (J-HOPE3 Study) including study design and demographic data. The aims of the J-HOPE3 study were to (1) evaluate the process, structure, and outcome of palliative care in the following care settings: acute hospitals, inpatient hospice/palliative care units (PCUs), and home hospice services; (2) examine bereaved family members’ self-reported psychosocial conditions, such as grief and depression, as bereavement outcomes; (3) provide data to ensure and improve the quality of care provided by participating institutions through feedback concerning results for each institution; and (4) perform additional studies to explore specific clinical research questions. We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous, self-report questionnaire survey involving patients’ bereaved family members in 20 acute hospitals, 133 PCUs, and 22 home hospice services between May and July 2014. Two types of questionnaires were used: main and specific studies questionnaires. The questionnaire was sent to totally 13 584, and 10 157 returned the questionnaire. The analysis included 9126 family members’ questionnaires from acute hospitals, PCUs, and home hospice services. Respondents’ average age was 61.6 years, 55% were women, and 40% had been married to the deceased. With respect to the characteristics of participating institutions, most institutions did not have religious affiliations, and most PCUs and home hospice services provided bereavement care. These results of the analysis of common and additional questionnaires could play an important role in clinical settings, quality improvement, research, and public accountability.

The aim of this research was to determine the psychometric properties (construct validity and internal consistency) of The Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) in health sciences students from Cartagena, Colombia. Validation study without a standard criterion in 857 health sciences students whom answered the R-SPQ-2F. The number of factors that explained the construct was determined using exploratory factor analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis determined construct validity and Cronbach’s Alpha internal consistency. R-SQP-2F showed a mean value 66.01±12.3 with minimum 36 and maximum 99. EFA showed a two-factor solution that accounted for the 42.5% of the total variance. However, CFA showed the following fit indexes: χ2=962.783; df=166; RMSEA=0.075 (90% CI %: 0.070-0.079); CFI=0.883; TLI=0.866. R-SPQ-2F is a scale with acceptable internal consistency and two-factor structure with questionable construct validity. However, it shows practical utility on higher education learning strategies related-research. Researchers need additional studies about its psychometric properties in the future.

Introduction: Recently, there has been an increase in adults undergoing orthodontic treatment in both the public and the private sector. Satisfaction during and after the orthodontic treatment process has not been widely discussed so far, however, and few research studies have emphasized patient satisfaction with treatment outcome and the factors affecting patient satisfaction. Aim: To investigate factors affecting patient satisfaction with the process of orthodontic treatment in young adults. Material and methods: Fifty-eight patients (33 girls and 25 boys with a mean age of 25.05 years, SD 2.83) were included in the survey. All patients were young adults who had completed their orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances and were taken from two centers (a teaching hospital and a private practice). Data was collected using online survey forms and was analyzed using content thematic analysis. Five main factors were identified related to patient satisfaction with the process of orthodontic treatment: communication, faculty (orthodontist), physical surroundings, consultation/appointments, and impact of appliance treatment. Results: Effective communication was the most prominent factor among all five factors considered, especially detailed explanation given during treatment and making patients feel comfortable under their care. Median values were generally high for satisfaction with treatment results. There was a clear correlation ( p < 0.001) between patient satisfaction and treatment outcome. Age, sex and treatment time did not have any correlation with treatment satisfaction. Conclusion: In general, young adults were observed to be satisfied with the treatment process, and good communication played a dominant role in this. Though there were many differences in working models between public and private sectors, many similarities were observed when comparing the factors between the two centers.

Abstract Background In this Occupational Health Department (OHD), a ‘telephone first’ approach was introduced to triage management referrals with potential to convert to Telephone Independent Medical Assessment (TIMA). Telephone consultation has been widely used in the UK’s NHS in the occupational health setting. Aims To evaluate TIMA effectiveness and efficiency of OHD resources; comparing the outcome of a triage call compared to previous default allocation of next available appointment, percentage of telephone triage calls converted to TIMA and appointment waiting times. To assess use of OHD resources arising from TIMA. To evaluate service user satisfaction following TIMA. To examine service user characteristics. Methods As management referrals were received, service users were given a telephone contact. Data were collected and anonymized regarding service users, who also consented to receive feedback questionnaire. Cross-sectional analysis of this management referral cohort was carried out. Results Two hundred and sixty-one management referrals were received in the specified period. Eighty per cent had a TIMA carried out (n = 208); 64% of management referrals with TIMA had a report issued (n = 166). Response rate to feedback questionnaire was 38% (n = 70); 94% of survey participants found TIMA acceptable going forward for management referrals (n = 66). Conclusions Introduction of a ‘telephone first’ approach resulted in improved efficiency of this OHD, allowing maximum workforce planning, and positive service user feedback.

Abstract Research background: The study examines the degree of the utilization of the idea of co-creating value by companies, taking into account the forms of remuneration of consumers. Purpose: The paper presents the issue of co-creating value with consumers from the perspective of the motivation and rewarding of clients. The article discusses factors determining the collaboration between the business and the virtual community as well as issues related to the remuneration of consumers. Research Methodology: The study covered managers who received questionnaires, developed after previous verification in a pilot study. The survey was conducted from August to October 2016. The questionnaire was prepared in a Polish and English version. The questionnaire in the Polish version was completed by 157 participants, while the questionnaire in the English version was completed by 42 managers. In total, 199 questionnaires were registered, including 134 with complete answers, which were subjected to further statistical analysis. The calculations were carried out using the SPSS v. 21/24 package and Statistica v. 7.1. Results: Enterprises with a high rate of positive answers to questions about the benefits of value creation believe that consumers should work together without remuneration. However, one should remember about the limited value of the interpretation due to the relatively small sample size. Novelty: This paper focuses on the results of analyses taking into account the relationship between the attitudes of entrepreneurs towards rewarding consumers for their contribution to value creation and the attitudes of entrepreneurs towards the issue of cooperation.

There are numerous patient satisfaction questionnaires by none specific for an Independent Medical Examination (IME). The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a questionnaire suitable for an IME.The questionnaire (IMESQ) consisted of five process domains (“Interpersonal manner”, “Communication”, “Technical ability”, “Information exchange”, “Time allocation”) and an outcome domain (“Satisfaction”), each with a five-scale Likert response. An 11-point numerical satisfaction scale (NSS) and a 3-point scale question on the “willing to undergo another examination with the doctor if required” were alternative measures of validation. The questionnaire was tested against numerous independent variables.Statistical analysis included Spearman correlation ((rS) between the items in the questionnaire and the total score with the NSS, and “willing to undergo another examination with the doctor if required” with point-biserial correlation (rpb). Internal consistent reliability was tested using split-half correlation coefficient (rSB) and Cronbach's alpha coefficient (α). The construct was subjected to Factor Analysis. The results from 53 respondents were analysed. There was moderate to strong inter-item correlation (rs range 0.57 to 0.83, median 0.67, p < 0.01) and good correlation with the NSS (rs = 0.79, p < 0.01) and dichotomous question (rpb = 0.45, p < 0.01). Five respondents were “neither satisfied or dissatisfied” (Item 6) and 12 recorded “maybe” to further examination. The split-half correlation was strong (rSB= 0.76, p < 0.01). There was good internal consistency reliability (α = 0.92). “Interpersonal manner” (ψ = 4.3) was the only item to have an eigenvalue greater than one, accounting to 72% of the variance across the scale. Eigenvector analysis confirmed the questionnaire was unidimentional. The IMESQ is a brief questionnaire to assess satisfaction with an IME. It is validated and has good internal consistency reliability. The five process domains can identify areas of suboptimal performance: useful for a 360° audit.

This study aimed to describe the process of validation of a questionnaire assessing Italian consumers’ perception of food sustainability. The study has a multiphase design. Phase 1 consisted in translating and structuring the questionnaire. Phase 2 aimed at assessing the validity of the content by experts. Phase 3 consisted of a pilot study (n = 150) carried out to revise the questionnaire based on the reactions of consumers representing the target group of the assessment. The questionnaire showed adequate content validity for 11 out of 14 questions (>0.79) and S-CVI/Ave > 0.80. Cronbach’s alpha values ranged from 0.08 to 0.90. The construct with insufficient results (0.08) was changed because it failed to correlate with the rest of the questionnaire. The factor analysis permitted the identification of questions that needed improvement in terms of comprehensibility, elimination of redundancies, and repetitions. The validated questionnaire included 12 questions (71 response options); 3 sections were identified: food sustainability knowledge (4 questions-30 items); sources of proteins alternative to meat (3 questions-20 items); eating behaviors (5 questions-21 items). This study showed the importance of validation before the administration on a large scale of a questionnaire on a topic such as sustainability still lacking large support from consensus documents.

A substantial proportion of the pregnant population in the catchment area of the clinical site in Sweden is Arabic-speaking women. As abuse and violence against women is a global concern, it is important to translate these questionnaires to other languages. This process is not just merely a matter of finding a correlating word but also needs to be validated for content and consider the wording in a linguistic and cultural context. This article gives an account of the translation and content validity process and its challenges and pitfalls from Swedish and English into the Arabic language version.

IntroductionDelirium is a frequent and serious acute neuropsychiatric syndrome, namely in elderly hospitalised patients, described as a psychologically traumatic experience by patients, family/caregivers and health professionals(HPs). In this context, the Delirium Experience Questionnaire (DEQ) was developed as a face-valid instrument assessing the delirium experience recall and the degree of distress related to delirium episodes in patients, family/caregivers, and HPs.AimTo present the translation and cultural adaptation of the Portuguese version of DEQ (DEQ-PT).MethodsThe translation process followed ISPOR guidelines. After preparation, forward translation, reconciliation, back translation, back translation review, harmonization and cognitive debriefing (involving experts’ consensus), the DEQ-PT was tested (pre-test) in a group of elderly patients with delirium(≥ 65 years) in two Intermediate Care Units (Intensive Care Medicine Service-CHSJ, Porto). Exclusion criteria were: brain injury, blindness/deafness, unable to communicate, and Glasgow Coma Scale ≤ 11. Their families were also assessed, as well as the HPs (physicians/nurse) in charge of patients during hospitalisation.ResultsAfter obtaining permission to use the instrument, the DEQ was successfully translated into Portuguese, with harmonization of all new translations. Pre-test included a group of 5 patients, 5 families and 5 nurses. This version revealed good cognitive equivalence with the original English version and also a good level of comprehensibility.ConclusionThe DEQ-PT showed good feasibility, being suitable, quick and easy to use in the assessment of delirium experience in intermediate care units. These findings will be further developed by an ongoing validation study.AcknowledgementThis work was supported by foundation for science and technology (SFRH/BPD/103306/2014).Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

The study aimed to identify the level of practicing the human resources staffing process and the level of the employees’ job involvement in the Irbid District Electricity Company in Jordan; it also aimed to examine the impact of human resources staffing process on the employees’ job involvement. The study adopted the descriptive, analytical method, since it determines the characteristics of the phenomenon, describes its nature accurately and then determines the quality of the relationship between its variables. The study population included all the individuals in the senior and middle administrative levels by 100 individuals. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researchers prepared a questionnaire to examine the study variables. One hundred questionnaires were distributed to each manager, deputy manager, and department head in the Irbid District Electricity Company out of which the researchers retrieved 97 questionnaires valid for analysis. In order to analyze the data collected, the study relies on the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) where the descriptive statistics for all the fields of the study were estimated. The correlation matrix was also used to determine the relationship between variables. Furthermore, multiple regressions were used to determine the impact of the independent variable on the dependent variable. The findings showed that the level of practicing the human resources staffing process and the employees’ job involvement at Irbid District Electricity Company (IDECO) was moderate. The findings of the study showed that the process of human resources staffing was positively associated with the job involvement where the Pearson coefficient was r= .851 and at level of significance of 0.00. The research data have also indicated that the human resources staffing process had a positive impact on the employees’ job involvement. The study recommended that the procedures of staffing in all organizations should focus on achieving the fit between the employee and his job through focusing on choosing employees whose knowledge, skills and abilities correspond to the requirements of vacant jobs and also through implementing different tests and selection interviews, which help choose the person whose traits fit the job requirements. The study has also indicated that the recommended organizations should also pay attention to the job design process where the focus is on designing jobs in a way that creates a challenge, and enables employees feel independence and joy during the job; in this method, the employee can be more involved and can work in an effective way.

The latest developments in the field of learning English as a foreign language have encouraged language teachers to use more authentic and realistic assessments. This situation makes portfolios as alternative assessments increasingly popular. As the popularity of the portfolio grows, questions among assessment developers have also arisen. They question whether the portfolio really is a proper assessment. In this study, the researcher investigated the wash-back effect of portfolio-based assessment. She observed the instructional process in a translation and a writing class to see how the two types of portfolios were used. This qualitative analysis study also studies by triangulating the data with the support of data from interviews and questionnaires. Researcher then classified the opinions and reflections of students and lecturers obtained from the interview and questionnaire responses. The findings suggest the use of a portfolio is indeed appropriate for use in writing and translating subjects. Portfolio-based assessments generate positive washback effect on the learning process.

Purpose Concept maps have been described as a valuable tool for exploring curriculum knowledge. However, less attention has been given to the use of them to visualise contested and tacit knowledge, i.e. the values and perceptions of teachers that underpin their practice. This paper aims to explore the use of concept mapping to uncover academics’ views and help them articulate their perspectives within the framework provided by the concepts of pedagogic frailty and resilience in a collaborative environment. Design/methodology/approach Participants were a group of five colleagues within a Biochemical Science Department, working on the development of a new undergraduate curriculum. A qualitative single-case study was conducted to get some insights on how concept mapping might scaffold each step of the collaborative process. They answered the online questionnaire; their answers were “translated” into an initial expert-constructed concept map, which was offered as a starting point to articulate their views during a group session, resulting in a consensus map. Findings Engaging with the questionnaire was useful for providing the participants with an example of an “excellent” map, sensitising them to the core concepts and the possible links between them, without imposing a high level of cognitive load. This fostered dialogue of complex ideas, introducing the potential benefits of consensus maps in team-based projects. Originality/value An online questionnaire may facilitate the application of the pedagogic frailty model for academic development by scaling up the mapping process. The map-mediated facilitation of dialogue within teams of academics may facilitate faculty development by making explicit the underpinning values held by team members.
