This thesis is concerned with student migration to the UK. The research objectives of this study are to investigate the personal, familial and social processes pertaining to international student migration and to contribute to the theorization of migration. To further its research objectives the study adopts a grounded theory approach which allows students to voice the concerns, motives and influences pertaining to their migration actions and intentions. The method of the inquiry is qualitative and is based on individual, in-depth, interviews with Greek and Chinese students at the University of Sheffield. In order to interpret and analyse its findings, this research employs the work of Pierre Bourdieu and the Life-course approach on migration. Further, these two distinct bodies of work are combined into a theoretical framework able to further social scientific understanding of migration decision-making. This study brings forward the concept of an intended migration trajectory as a theoretical tool with the potential to enhance our understanding of the migration process. Student migration is found to be a response to the individual and familial needs and ambitions generated by the context in which agents move. Individual actions and intentions are part of an effort to further needs and ambitions in multiple spheres of activity in the best possible way. Migration is best described as a process in the sense that migration partly alters the context facing individuals and families and so contributes to a partial change in agents' needs, ambitions and, ultimately, migration intentions. Overall, this study accomplishes its objectives to investigate Greek and Chinese student migration to the UK and to further social scientists' theoretical understanding of 21st century migration flows.

This thesis is an exploratory study of the lives and experiences of international students who apply for and gain permanent residency (PR) after completing tertiary study in Australia. The thesis uses sociological theories and methods to focus on the ways that students-turned-migrants maintain transnational connections, and negotiate their memberships and sense of belonging across Australia and other countries. This research is important because there is negligible extant literature that connects the international study experience and the skilled migration experience as two steps in the same process. Furthermore, research that does address this phenomenon tends to look at students-turned-migrants as a 'policy problem', usually focusing on their labour market integration. In contrast, this thesis foregrounds this distinctive group of contemporary migrants' subjective experience of the migration process and their ongoing transnational connections. The research used cultural probes (packages of mixed media materials such as diaries, maps and disposable cameras, which participants used to document aspects of their lives) and in-depth interviews to provide a rich understanding of the multiplicity and breadth of participants' individual experiences, with various reflective representations of the individuals' narratives at the core of the study. The analysis covers two aspects of the student-turned-migrant experience: the acquisition of memberships, such as PR and citizenship, and the maintenance of mobilities, including virtual mobility through media and communications technology, and corporeal mobility through forms of travel such as return visits. The analysis reveals that students-turned-migrants undergo a distinct migration experience, characterised by three sequential gates of membership: their entrance as transient students, their acquisition of residency and their decisions about citizenship. Transnational consciousness diffuses their decision-making at each stage of this process, as they negotiate the memberships available to them as a means to balance their desires and obligations across home and host countries. The analysis reveals that student-turned-migrant choices and experiences are often affected by macro-political forces. Choices about citizenship are heavily influenced by global regimes of mobility and the media, and their acqu isition of residency is negotiated through the institutions and regulations of the immigration regime. The analysis also reveals that students-turned-migrants engage with a diverse range of transnational practices, many of which are closely grounded in the use of technology to maintain transnational connections. The findings reframe students-turned-migrants as more than just a policy problem, but rather as a unique group of contemporary migrants, with several key features that set them apart from previous waves of Australian migrants. While they are less integrated into established local ethnic communities, they maintain very strong connections overseas. They maintain regular contact through virtual mobilities and display a high propensity for return travel. They value mobility highly and display an acute awareness of both the advantages and challenges of sustaining mobile lives. The study of their experiences not only reveals a great deal about the nature of transnationality and mobility in an increasingly globalised world, but also suggests that if this type of migration continues in the future, it may have implications for Australia's patterns of cultural diversity and international integration.

The cross-border mobility of educational services, commonly known as transnational higher education (TNHE), represents an important dimension of the internationalisation of higher education. Its relationship with the mobility of students and graduates has raised interest among scholars from different disciplines, but empirical evidence is rare. This thesis addresses this gap by providing three empirical studies on this issue. Overall, the results indicate that TNHE is not substituting student mobility and suggest that the provision of TNHE can constitute a strategy for developed countries to increase skilled migrants’ and students’ recruitment. The results equally imply that caution should be devoted to these kinds of issues by developing countries when opening their educational market to foreign providers. A range of other findings contribute to a deeper and nuanced understanding of the phenomenon of TNHE. The insights provided can benefit future research both on international migration and higher education.
La mobilitat internacional dels serveis educatives, comunament coneguda com l'educació superior transnacional (TNHE), representa un aspecte important de la internacionalització de l'educació superior. La seva relació amb la mobilitat dels estudiants d'educació superior i graduats ha despertat interès entre acadèmics de diferents disciplines. L'evidència empírica és però escassa. Aquesta tesi proporciona tres estudis empírics sobre aquesta qüestió. Els resultats indiquen que la TNHE no està substituint la mobilitat d'estudiants i suggereixen que la provisió de TNHE pot constituir una bona estratègia per els països desenvolupats per atreure més immigrants qualificats i estudiants. Els resultats impliquen igualment que els països en desenvolupament, que obren el seu mercat educatiu als proveïdors estrangers, han de prestar atenció a aquest tipus de possibles conseqüències. This thesis explores the motivations and lived experiences of Nigerian Christian women engaged in postgraduate studies in UK higher education based on 20 semi-structured interviews. For this group of women, their educational quest abroad is happening at the phase in the normative life course when they are expected by Nigerian society to be wives as well as mothers. Such cultural expectations carry social sanctions for non-conformity. This thesis investigates the immense social pressures the women come under as their educational achievements are not considered as important as the fulfillment of their social roles in their home country, and the strategies/negotiations they engage in to gain and maintain support for their educational pursuit. Being that they are studying and living in an egalitarian society like the UK, the thesis also examines why the women remain attached to Nigerian patriarchal values. Using empirical data, the thesis attempts to challenge and critique the current debates on international student migration that portray it as an individualized process and international student migrants as a homogenous group. It argues that the participants’ motivations and migration experiences are gendered and embedded in social relationships and processes. Furthermore, the thesis claims that the set of women interviewees are not just engaged in academic study alone as the literatures tend to portray international student migrants, they are also family members (wives/mothers/daughters) and workers, who consciously juggle their multiple roles in an order that seems to prioritize their social roles above the rest. The thesis asserts that the women are not victims; rather they are agentic beings whose compliant attitudes to patriarchal gender structures and roles are rooted in their religious and cultural beliefs.

This paper investigates and compares Chinese master’s students in Denmark and Sweden, focusing on their motivation for choosing to study in Denmark and Sweden, their daily life and study acculturation experience, as well as their intentions of staying or returning after graduating.The paper provides information on the current student migration situation, and presents relevant motivational migration and acculturation theories. A semi-structured interview method is then used to gather qualitative data from six Chinese master’s students studying in Denmark and Sweden. In the analysis, the paper applies the theories on the interview data.This paper’s findings suggest that the main reasons for the Chinese master’s students to study abroad is to improve their competencies and experience foreign culture. When choosing the study destination, decisive factors include the quality of the program, the academic reputation of the universities, the use of English in teaching and cultural aspirations.The effects of cultural differences, study situation and finance are factors that affect their psychological well-being during the process of acculturation. Their psychological well-being generally follows a “U” curve with an initial high level followed by a lower level which eventually increases to a higher level once again. The students encounter challenges in their study related to the Danish and Swedish academia’s direct teacher-student and student-student communication, as well as the English language.Regarding the students’ intentions after graduating, some plan to return to China because of family, friends and personal relationship reasons, while others intend to stay mainly for career reasons, but with the intention of ultimately returning to China.

The Palestinian information technology (IT) sector is growing, yet an ongoing migration of IT professionals and graduates is taking place – both in shape of student migration and labour migration. Through group, pair and individual interviews, this thesis investigates highly skilled IT students’ intentions to stay in or to leave Palestine after graduation. The study puts the individual in the center of the analysis focusing on a micro-level perspective while examining professional outlooks and factors affecting migratory and stay decisions. The findings highlight the impact of the university, the IT sector, the Israeli occupation and gender norms. Moreover, the study reveals a clash between aspirations and reality in professional outlooks, a lack of freedoms, and show significant support for the impact of macro-level factors in migratory decision-making. This thesis also addresses the call for a human face in skilled migration, and provides insights to an under-researched region in the skilled-migration literature.

The European Union (EU) has maintained relations in key strategic areas with India since the 1960s. Education has played an important role in the diplomatic relations between India and the EU. Non-European student mobility to the countries of the EU has significantly increased in recent years and India has been a major source of student mobility to the EU leading to education becoming a service increasingly tradable. This dissertation focuses on student migration between India and the EU, contributing to improving the understanding of the recent trends of India-EU migration, mainly characterized by a shift in the Indian students’ choices of the European destination for higher education; from a more traditional choice, the United Kingdom to a steadily rising preference for Germany and the factors influencing such choices. The study identifies the socio-economic factors determining the outflows from India and the inflows to the EU, attempting to ascertain whether Indian students return to India post completion of studies in the EU to look for further career prospects or prefer to settle in the host country in the EU and thus, if the current trends of student migration are leading to a short term brain gain in the EU but an overall reverse brain drain in India; Tendências Recentes da Migração de Estudantes Indianos para a União Europeia: Fuga de Cérebros ou o seu Contrário? More than 1.2 million students have left China to study abroad during the past three decades of economic reform in China. In 2007 alone, China sent around 144,000 students abroad, 167 times of the number of students in 1978. This large scale of student migration has often raised debate on brain drain , because many of these student migrants do not return to China upon graduation. However, there has been a reverse trend in the past decade as China witnessed a growing wave of return migration. More and more Chinese students are coming back to China after their studies and work abroad due to the strong economic situation and promising career opportunities at home. These returnees are given the nick-name Haigui or, in English, sea-turtles. This doctoral research is therefore an academic inquiry to this emerging social phenomenon. While international migration is mainly researched on the national level, this innovative doctoral research seeks to understand the relationship between migration and global city formation. To do so, it analyses inter-city migration flow by applying a relational case study of circular student migration between Shanghai and Paris and examines the rationale behind return migration and the role of management/business student returnees from French business schools on Shanghai s pathway to become China s premier global city. This research reveals that global cities have become the strategic points for Chinese talents (students and skilled professionals) acting the role as sending, transiting and receiving sites, which are interconnected in the dynamic process of knowledge accumulation, contact making and network creation. Chinese student returnees contribute to the development of Shanghai by actively engaging in transnational activities including developing and maintaining cross-border organisation/corporate ties and personal networks, knowledge transfer, acting as global-local business and cultural interface, as well as enriching cosmopolitan and multicultural business and cultural spaces in Shanghai.

This research aims to explore gender relations in the course of student migration from Nepal. It enquires into how Nepalese migrant students in Australia continue or discontinue traditional gender roles by disclosing the lived experiences of a small cohort of Nepalese female students in Brisbane, Australia. A review of the relevant literature indicated that, despite significant development in the field of gender and migration research worldwide, the gender aspect of Nepalese student migration is still under-researched. Responding to this gap, I have developed a study that investigates the ways in which Nepalese female student migrants are negotiating gender relations between home and abroad. This study revolves around their changing perspectives on traditional gender relations as a result of living in the changed socio-cultural settings of host country, and the inherent challenges of implementing the changes in conventional interpretations of gender- based roles after returning their home country. Importantly, I share the same ethnic background and similar migration history with the research participants. Furthermore, my several years of professional experiences in education consultancies became the primary motivation for commencing this study from the position of an ‘insider researcher’ utilising both ethnographic observation and autoethnographic reflection as research tools. Six married Nepalese female students, studying in different institutions in Brisbane, were requested to participate in a qualitative semi-structured interview. In addition, I draw from autoethnographic observations and reflection on my personal encounters as a student migrant in Australia, as well as professional engagement as an education consultant. The semi-structured interviews provided the primary data for the research. Interview transcripts were manually coded based on their affinity with two distinct themes: negotiating in-betweenness in gender relations in the course of living in a different context; and circumstances of mobility either in the origin country or in the host country. At the same time, whether playing the role of passive observer or interviewing the participants as a researcher, their activities, as well as personal experiences and stories, were at times similar to my own. The most revealing and common experiences of all the participants after living in Australia was the feeling of emancipation from the yoke of patriarchy, which required them to play traditional gender roles in their country of origin. In spite of their commitment to make people aware of this new-found freedom, even after returning to their country of origin, the lack of confidence to continue to live with this changed philosophy of life was equally evident in their responses. Moreover, mixed opinions about the metamorphosis of their male counterparts regarding doing and undoing gender also posed a question on whether or not the Nepalese males would continue to cooperate with their wives in introducing changes in the traditional gender roles upon returning to their home country.

This project is a multifaceted analysis of the Post Graduate Work Permit Program (PGWPP), a temporary work permit that allows international students to live and work in Canada following graduation. This dissertation explores a) the program’s development throughout the years, b) the lived experiences and the perceptions of the students who used the program for transitioning to permanent residency and, c) an art-based autoethnographic introspection about this transition. The research question focuses on how the PGWPP, which provides the government with economic projections regarding student migration, influences the social and economic integration of international students/graduates. This dissertation consists of three self-containing articles all of which employ mobilities paradigm to examine the following secondary questions and purposes: a)Article 1 is an archaeological review of the development of the program that assesses how well the program meets its objective to settle international graduates as successful future permanent residents, b)Article 2 investigates international graduates’ experiences and perspectives about their transition to permanent residency via the PGWPP, c) Article 3 investigates the impacts of migratory-related difficulties among international students on their trajectory as immigrants. Each article approaches the PGWPP from a different methodological angle to provide a comprehensive analysis of the program that ultimately considers the wellness of international students in their pathways to Canadian residency.

Haitian university students represent a part of the increasing diversity of Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic. Using an ethnographic approach, I explore university students’ motivations for studying in the Dominican Republic, their experiences at Dominican universities and in Dominican society, Haitian student organizations, and their future plans. Additionally, I focus on Haitian students’ experiences with discrimination and how they relate to other Haitian migrants in the Dominican Republic. I find that most students come to the Dominican Republic due to the difficulty of gaining entrance to affordable Haitian universities and logistical convenience. The university is a unique setting where Haitian and Dominican students are clearly peers, which results in increased interactions between the two groups and decreased discrimination towards Haitian students. However, Haitian students remain a relatively isolated group within the university and in the larger Dominican society. Many students reported experiencing discrimination, although students identified class, rather than race or nationality, as the main reason for discrimination. Furthermore, I focused on the role of language in migrants’ experiences. I found that while a high command of Spanish allowed migrants to avoid identification as Haitian and subsequent discrimination, Kreyòl was used as a resource to create solidarity and maintain cultural ties to Haiti. My research suggests that it is important to keep in mind the distinct notions of race and nationality in Haiti and in the Dominican Republic when considering contemporary struggles for the rights of Haitian migrants and their descendants in the Dominican Republic.

This study deals with skilled migration from a developing country perspective. The migration of skilled individuals from developing countries to developed countries is often viewed as a costly subsidy from the poor nations to the rich, and a threat to their economic development. The first part of the study brings up to date both the theoretical and the policy debate on the impact of skilled migration on the sending economies. The second purpose of the study is to take a closer look at the motivations for skilled emigration from Turkey. The emigration of skilled individuals from Turkey has attracted greater attention in recent years, particularly after the experience of back to back economic crises that have led to increased unemployment among the highly educated young. A survey study was undertaken during the first half of 2002 in order to collect information on various characteristics of Turkish professionals and Turkish students residing abroad. Over 2000 responses were received from the targeted populations. The information from this survey was then used to determine the empirical importance of various factors on return intentions by estimating ordered probit models for the two samples. In the migration literature, wage differentials are often cited as an important factor explaining skilled migration. The findings of the study suggest, however, that other factors are also important in explaining the non-return of Turkish professionals. Economic instability in Turkey is found to be an important push factor, while work experience in Turkey also increases non-return. In the student sample, higher salaries offered in the host country and lifestyle preferences, including a more organized and ordered environment in their current country of study increase the probability of not returning. For both groups, the analysis also points to the importance of prior intentions and the role of the family in the decision to return to Turkey or stay overseas.

This study explores the coping strategies amongst international students who moved to a medium sized city in Sweden to study. The aim is to explore how international students cope with loneliness and their perceptions and experiences related to loneliness. The method is qualitative and inductive, with deductive properties such as the topics related to loneliness, coping, resources and technology. We conducted semi structured interviews with six participants. The theory used is a strength-based perspective focusing on the resources and coping of the participants. The results show the participants express various accounts of experienced loneliness and coping strategies. The themes found were a New university and country, Social life, Society and culture, Self-agency, and Coping strategies. International students cope with loneliness by talking to family and friends, often using ICT. Other sources of support come from within the university environment. Most of the support utilized comes from the students acting themselves.

本研究は、現代日本における留学生の雇用政策と、留学後に高度人材として留学生を活用する際の問題点との関連性について考察したものである。本稿では、留学生に関する高等教育政策、労働移住政策、移民問題が複雑に絡み合っている状況を分析しているため、短期雇用ではなく主に長期雇用の可能性に焦点をあてている。そのため、同論文は高等教育における留学生の移住を移民問題として再考しようという挑戦的な論考となっている。
This study critically investigates the relationship between international student recruitment policies and issues about utilizing students as a pool of skilled migrants after graduation in the context of contemporary Japan. In this regard, examining the overlapping complexities between higher education policies related to international students, labor migration policies, and immigration issues, this study mainly explores the possibility of the long-term settlement of international students rather than thinking of them as temporary sojourners. In doing so, it attempts to radically rethink international student migration in higher education as an immigration issue.

The case study of this thesis is the analysis of international health care students joined the emergency call of local authorities and performed emergency work during COVID-19 to help the Hungarian health care teams and facilities manage the pandemic. Through this case, the thesis puts an existing student interaction typology (Rose-Redwood and Rose-Redwood, 2013) to the test, and sets out to answer how the COVID-19-induced changes in their typology affected the students’ experience of being a migrant in Hungary. With semi-structured interviews and an inductive approach, the thesis identifies three recurring feelings – isolation, gratitude and responsibility – and the core argument of the thesis is that the feelings and migration experiences that the student shared were connected to the disruption of the student interaction typology. This study informs our understanding of student mobility and helps further research account for atypical situations in student mobility research.

As a traditional country of immigration, New Zealand has often looked outside of its borders for its population composition and as a result 19 percent of New Zealand's current population were born overseas. In recent times, immigration has been used by successive governments as a means of countering severe skills shortages and off-setting a declining birth rate. While attention in the media, public and to some extent in academic circles has been largely focused on the increasing volume of immigrants to New Zealand from Asian countries, migration from Europe has often been overlooked and yet it remains an important component of the New Zealand's migration flows. This thesis explores this stream of migration - from the member states of the European Union to New Zealand - by examining the specific case study of contemporary European Union migration to the Canterbury region, incorporating migrants who live, work and study in Canterbury. The thesis used surveys and in-depth interviews in addition to secondary data to investigate the composition of the European Union migrant population in Canterbury, as well as exploring the motivations and experiences of these migrants. Conceptualising the motivations of contemporary migrants from the EU to New Zealand is difficult, due to a multiplicity of theories and frameworks surrounding the topic of migration. As such, this thesis suggests a three level framework drawn from in order to better understand the motivations of target population. Although the experiences of the surveyed migrants were largely positive, some difficulties were noted, particularly while seeking work and building friendships with New Zealanders. Finally, this thesis proposes a number of recommendations at a policy and academic level which may assist in furthering understandings of the important but often ignored group of European Union migrants in New Zealand.

Student mobility policies have become a high priority of the European Union since they are expected to result in private and social returns. However, at the same time these policies risk leading to unwanted geographical consequences, particularly brain drain from lagging to core regions, as formerly mobile students may not return on completion of their studies. Accordingly, this thesis focuses on both the private returns to student mobility and the determinants of return migration. It is important to note that, currently, the literature about the mobility of students is scarce and provides mixed evidence regarding both these issues. We contribute to the current academic debate in this field by doing a case study on the Master and Back programme, which was implemented since 2005 by the Italian lagging region of Sardinia. The programme is co-financed by the European Social Fund and consists of providing talented Sardinian students with generous scholarships to pursue Master's and Doctoral degrees in the world's best universities. Concerning the private returns to migration, we evaluate the impact of this scheme on the odds of employment and net monthly income of the recipients. Moreover, we assess whether the scheme has been able to improve their job matching. To perform this analysis we access unique administrative data on the recipients and a suitable control group, complemented by a purpose-designed web survey. In addition, we enquire into the determinants of return migration and the underlying decision-making process by using a mixed-methods approach, which is particularly well-suited for very complex phenomena like the one at hand.

The Niuean population has been in decline since the airport opened on the island. This thesis investigates a specific aspect of the migration from the island: what final year high school students in Niue plans to do after graduation in relation to leaving or staying in Niue. The study relates this decision to place attachment, values and climate change.The study indicates that Niuean youth doesn’t want to study on the island but instead move to New Zealand to pursue their academic ambitions. The students exhibit a strong sense of place attachment that is based in their identification with the island culture and nature. They want to return to the island after getting their university degree, making them attached stayers. The risk of cyclones does not affect the students wishes to live on the island. Decisions are in large motivated by caring for family, the students want to get a degree and then return to be able to take care and give back to their parents, grandparents and other people that have cared for them during their childhood.

Rapa Nui (Easter Island) has for centuries been known as an isolated island of archaeological mysteries; yet after a rapid modernisation this is today an international tourist destination, a World Heritage Site and a glocalised community. This anthropological study based on long-term fieldwork among young Rapa Nui on the island and away, describes how it can be to grow up in and to belong to such a place. Place is seen as a continually constructed social space and is influenced by Miriam Kahn??s use of Henri Lefebvre??s concept thirdspace. Rapa Nui, as a place, people and community, is here understood as continuously formed by global and local influences. Thus, although historical, global and national influences can seem overwhelming in such a small tourist destination with a turbulent colonial history, this study also sees the opinions and practices of the inhabitants as important agents. This thesis shows how young Rapa Nui are both influenced by and influencing what Rapa Nui is and becomes. Above all, their guiding principle seems to be a continuing strong attachment to their land ??also called Te Pito o te Henua (??The Navel of the World??).

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the various reasons that have contributed to the decisionof international students not to return to their home countries after completing their studies, with a focus on students from Rwanda, Nigeria, and Cameroon. The study will include information about student’s home countries to provide a greater understanding of where they come from and how this has contributed to the decisions they have made. The push and pull factor theory will help to understand the different reasons why people choose to immigrate instead of staying in their home countries and what becomes a pull factor in the whole process. To gain even more insight into the students' choice not to return home, semistructured interviews with the 10 individuals will become important. By interviewing the 10 individuals from Rwanda, Nigeria, and Cameroon, one could tell that the countries have had amajor impact on the students' choice not to return home. Results showed that many chose not to return home because of the political instability that council in their home countries, some also felt living a life where they did not have to worry about tomorrow was an important factor in not going back home. The conclusion drawn was that countries were losing talented people because of their inability to put the needs of their citizens first.

Le changement des circonstances infrastructurelles et économiques dans les années 2000 ont fait évoluer large-ment les caractéristiques et les projets d'études des étudiants coréens en France. Dans le cadre d'une ethnographie des parcours biographiques d'étudiants coréens en France (trente entretiens entre 2011 et 2015) et de leurs fa-milles en Corée du Sud (vingt cas, l'été 2012 et 2014), cette thèse restitue l'analyse de la comparaison de groupes d'étudiants coréens selon le moment de l'arrivée en France entre 2000 et 2010. Il s'agit de déterminer les évolutions des rapports des étudiants avec leur famille, les modalités de soutien et les projets de vie, entre ces deux groupes à partir de la classe, du sexe, de l'âge et du type d'études. Dans le cadre transnational, l'expérience de la distance incite à se rapprocher pour maintenir une relation familiale grâce aux nouvelles technologies de la communication et accentue le dynamisme du soutien affectif. Au lieu de la double absence proposée par Sayad, aujourd'hui, la période "transitoire" de la migration étudiante entraîne une double présence matérielle et émo-tionnelle, tout au long du séjour à l'étranger. D'un côté, les soutiens familiaux s'adaptent ou subissent des modifications. D'un autre côté, le séjour prolongé, le rythme temporel autogéré et des repères identifiés comme possibles contribuent à déclencher des projets de vie migratoire. The change in infrastructural and economic circumstances in the 2000s has largely changed the characteristics and educational plans of Korean students in France. As part of an ethnography of the biographical pathways of Korean students in France (thirty interviews between 2011 and 2015) and their families in South Korea (twenty cases, summer 2012 and 2014), this thesis restores the analysis of the comparison of groups of Korean students according to the time of arrival in France between 2000 and 2010. It is a question of determining the evolution of students relationships with their family, the modalities of support and the projects of life, between these two groups based on class, gender, age and type of education. In the transnational context, the experience of distance encourages us to come together to maintain a family relationship thanks to new communication technologies and accentuates the dynamism of emotional support. Instead of the dual absence proposed by Sayad, today, the "tran-sitional" period of student migration entails a double material and emotional presence throughout the stay abroad. On the one hand, family supports adapt or undergo modifications. On the other hand, the extended stay, the self-managed temporal rhythm and the markers identified as possible contribute to trigger migratory life projects. This research is an opportunity to take stock to address the moral and practical obligations that must occur, what we call delayed care, both care "temporal", "delayed", but always "remote"

This thesis addresses the “foreign talent” situation in Singapore with an ethnographic account of the lived experiences of immigrant PRC students on scholarships, or “PRC scholars.” For some two decades, the Singapore government has annually recruited middle school students from China in their hundreds, selecting them through tests and interviews, granting them full scholarships at either pre-undergraduate or undergraduate level, and, very often, “bonding” them to work subsequently in Singapore for a number of years. Wooed and appropriated in such a way as prized potential human capital, PRC scholars exemplify the Singapore state’s desire for “foreign talent.” In the first decade of the twenty-first century, as the influx of all manners of “foreign talent” into the small city-state gathered pace, local sentiments and discourses of resentment arose. The local-vs-“foreign talent” problem became a serious strain on a city and people proud of their cosmopolitanism. This thesis analyzes the “foreign talent” situation through the ethnographic “macro-trope” of desire. It argues that “foreign talent” is a site of convergence and divergence, collusion and collision, accommodation and contestation, fulfillment and failure of various individual, sociocultural, and political desires and longings. Through the lens of desire, and its psychoanalytic undertones and insights, this thesis looks ethnographically into the PRC scholars’ “foreign talent” journeys in nuanced ways. Based on ethnographic fieldworks carried out in a Chinese middle school and a Singaporean university, the thesis shows how Chinese students are constituted as specific subjects of desire, and how they subsequently develop certain perceptions, attitudes, and stereotypes about the local “other” as well as about themselves after arriving in Singapore as “foreign talent.” Infused with multifarious desires, the PRC scholars’ experiences are often characterized by angst and dissatisfaction; yet it is also argued that generative subjective transformations take place precisely amidst these dynamics and pragmatics of desiring. Ultimately, this thesis seeks to make possible an ethical re-imagination of the “foreign talent” situation in Singapore from the perspective of desire; to provide an account of the so far little-studied Chinese migrant students in the context of Singapore; and to speak more broadly to the cultural and subjective dimensions of human experiences in the context of educational mobility, identity politics, and globalization.

A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo apreender as trajetórias e travessias dos estudantes africanos que migram para a cidade de Juiz de Fora para cursarem o ensino superior, notadamente os estudantes atrelados ao Programa estudante convênio graduação – PEC-G. Partindo do pressuposto de que a migração estudantil, para além do deslocamento espacial, traz em seu cerne transformações acerca das identidades dos indivíduos e se realiza por intermédio das redes sociais estabelecidas entre o país de origem e o país de destino, busca-se refletir como estudantes africanos se inserem no seio do universo estudantil da sociedade brasileira e de que forma a interação dentro desta nova realidade social contribui para que indivíduos e os grupos por eles formados acionem novas categorias identitárias, operando transformações no plano individual e social. “Ser africano” no contexto da vivência da sociabilidade de uma juventude universitária, é uma faceta identitária que se (re)afirma cotidianamente. Esta faceta também é celebrada através de eventos organizados por estes estudantes; através dos discursos do que é ser africano no contexto migratório, forma pela qual alguns elementos simbólicos são acionados. Também se pretende refletir acerca do projeto da migração estudantil, da decisão de migrar para cursar o ensino superior, a chegada e as experiências vivenciadas, assim como os planos para depois da formação. Como método, utilizou-se a etnografia, através da observação participante e de entrevistas abertas. E para um entendimento maior do universo social do qual estes estudantes são oriundos e sobre as origens e implicações das migrações estudantis, fez-se necessário uma pesquisa acerca da história das relações Brasil-África; sobre a (re)configuração de uma identidade negra à partir do século XX; a questão dos PALOP e a língua portuguesa como um patrimônio cultural em comum; assim como os acordos governamentais empreendidos pelo governo brasileiro e os países africanos de modo a fomentar as migrações
The current research aims at gathering the path and crossings of African students migrating to the city of Juiz de Fora to take a college degree, notoriously students related to the ProgramaEstudanteConvênioGraduação – PEC-G. Assuming that student migration, beyond spatial displacement, brings in its core shifts regarding individual identity and carries itself out through social networking established between home country and destination country, we aim to think over on how African students settle at the bosom of schooling universe of the Brazilian society and in what ways the interaction amongst this new social reality contributes for individuals and groups formed by them to activate new identity categories, operating changes individually and socially-wise. “Being African” in the context of sociability living of a college youth, is an identity facet reassured daily. This facet is also celebrated through events which are organized by those students; through speeches of what is being African in the migration setting, a way by which some symbolic elements are triggered. We also intend to reflect on the project of student migration, the choice of migration to take a college degree, the arrival and experiences lived, as much as plans after graduation. For a method, ethnography was used, through the observation of participants and open interviews. Also, for a better understanding of those students’ original student universe and about the origins and implications of student migration, a research about the Brazilian-African relation was necessary; about the (re)setting of a black identity at the 20th century; the question of Portuguese-speaking African countries and Portuguese language as a common cultural inheritance; as well as governmental agreements moved by the Brazilian government and African countries in order to encourage migrations.

Syftet med den här studien är att belysa studiehandledare och deras roll i olika skolor. Hur arbetar de på en daglig basis? Vilka instruktioner får de från sina överordnanden? Vilka tankar har de om hur deras arbete är organiserat och strukturerat? För att skapa tillförlitliga svar har den teoretiska utgångspunkten i studien baserats på hur studiehandledare ser på sin egen roll inom skolans verksamhet. Studien är baserad på flertalet intervjuer med studiehandledare där tankekartor skapades för att skapa klarhet i svaren. Resultaten visade en mängd olika erfarenheter vilket gav en intressant grund att bygga vidare på. Resultaten indikerade också de många olika utmaningar som skolor står inför både när det gäller strukturering och organisering av studiehandledarnas arbete. Möjligtvis än viktigare visade resultaten en tydlig bild av den centrala roll som studiehandledaren har i att skapa ett samhälle där vi alla möter varandra på samma villkor och behandlar alla jämlikt, och inte minst skapar förutsättningar för alla elever att nå sin fulla potential. Det här är något alla skolor ska och bör sträva emot på grund av de många fördelarna med det.
My purpose with this study is to highlight study counselors and the role they maintain in different schools. How do they work on a daily basis? Which instructions do they receive from their superiors? What are their thoughts on how their work is organized and structured? To create reliable answers my theoretical approach is based on how the study counselors see themselves as part of schools and their organizations. The study is based on interviews with several study counselors where mindmaps were created to make the answers more direct and concrete.  The findings showed somewhat different experiences which created an interesting narrative to build upon. The results also indicated the many different challenges we all face when it comes to both organizing and structuring the work of study counselors. Perhaps more importantly the finding gave a clear insight about the major importance of study counselors and their key role in creating an equal society which treats everyone equally and creates the same opportunities for every pupil to reach their full potenial. La thèse analyse les mobilités internationales étudiantes marocaines en France au regard de la configuration de leurs réseaux sociaux et de leur inscription territoriale. Le questionnement porte sur l’espace en mouvement ou plutôt les formes spatiales engendrées par des réseaux aux formes variées s’appuyant sur des lieux connectés. La thèse apporte un éclairage sur un type particulier de migration qualifiante, parce qu’éphémère, et insiste sur une appropriation des lieux basée sur le relationnel et la présence plurielle entre l’ici et le là-bas. La démarche combine méthodes quantitatives (analyse de données statistiques) et qualitatives (corpus d’entretien, observations) auquel s’ajoutent des techniques innovantes d’analyse des réseaux du web social (notamment par la mobilisation de graphes de réseaux Facebook). L’analyse des trajectoires de mobilité, des réseaux relationnels et des sociabilités, mais aussi des pratiques du quotidien des acteurs migrants, mettent à jour une territorialisation mobile et réticulaire qui permet de définir un territoire relationnel construit par les relations à partir des réseaux. Le territoire révèle ainsi des propriétés relationnelles, éphémères et dynamiques. Le web social est intégré comme un élément fondamental de cette territorialisation mobilitaire et réticulaire par la mise en relation des lieux et l’opérationnalité de la présence plurielle. This thesis analyzes the social networks and spatial mobility of Moroccan students in France. The main focus is on the socio-spatial practices and patterns generated by the students’ networks, and on the various spatialities and connected places they produce. The thesis provides insights into a particular type of short-term migration, and outlines how this form of migration leads to the appropriation of places and a relational, multi-nodal presence that situates students in a continuum between here (France) and there (Morocco). The research approach combines quantitative methods (statistical analysis) and qualitative methods (interviews, participant-observation) and introduces innovative techniques for analyzing online social networks (including the use of graphs to visualize Facebook networks). Analysis of mobility trajectories, relational networks and sociability, along with the daily practices of migrant actors, reveals a flexible spatial usage whichallows for the delineation of relational spaces, and leads to an understanding of the interconnections formed through online social networks. Moroccan students’ spatial patterns thus have relational, temporary and dynamic properties. The social web is an integral element of students’ mobility and multi-nodal spatial usage, and by linking a diversity of places and practices leads to a form of ‘plural presence’. At the same time, the online social networking practices of Moroccan students in France allows for a re-examination of the possible spatial imaginations (or, imaginaries) of migration

Population churn--the population turnover experienced by a community--can have differential effects on a community. Mass society theory suggests that because the churn rate experienced by communities can contribute to their uprooting, fragmentation, and isolation, churn is a potent threat to the stability of our modern day communities. Social capital theory, to the contrary, suggests otherwise. Social capital theory suggests that churn can have positive effects on communities by bringing new migrants with valuable human capital skills and experiences to communities. These migrants bring to their new communities the potential for creating new jobs, spurring economic development, and for initiating housing starts that expand housing options for the poor and minorities. In so doing, they help create and sustain vibrant, growing modern day communities. Yet in spite of the significant role churn may play in determining the health and viability of modern day communities, it has been overlooked in the migration literature, which is mostly dominated by individual-level research on the causes and effects of migration, particularly the pecuniary benefits to movers. Using county-level data and multivariate analyses, this research seeks to fill this gap in the literature by examining the relationship between the community and churn, from the perspectives provided by social capital and mass society theories.

A reformulação do Exame nacional de ensino médio (Enem), em 2009, e a implementação da plataforma Sisu, em 2010, levaram à transição do sistema de seleção do ensino superior público brasileiro: passou-se de um modelo descentralizado para um majoritariamente centralizado. Apesar da relevância dessa política, a avaliação de seus impactos ainda é principiante. Nesse sentido, utilizando dados de ingressantes entre 2006 e 2014, a pesquisa buscou investigar os impactos dessa política na migração inter e intraestadual e na evasão dos estudantes. Utilizamos, de forma inédita, bases derivadas do cruzamento entre microdados identificados de responsabilidade do Inep, que possibilitaram uma medida mais precisa da migração estudantil. Além disso, investigamos amostras agregadas por instituições e por estados para a inclusão de controles tradicionais de atração e repulsão na literatura de migração. Encontramos que o ingresso do aluno em um programa que oferta vagas pelo SISU eleva a probabilidade de ele ser um migrante interestadual em 2,9 pontos percentuais (p.p.), mas reduz a probabilidade de ele ser um migrante intraestadual em até 3,95 p.p.. Quanto aos resultados para a evasão, verificamos que a adesão ao Sisu eleva a probabilidade de evasão no primeiro ano em 4,5 p.p.. Além disso, um aluno que ingressa em um programa que oferta vagas pelo Sisu tem uma probabilidade maior de mudar de instituição antes de completar o curso. Nesse caso, o auxílio social mostra-se relevante para manter o aluno na mesma instituição, mas não no mesmo curso. Por fim, verificamos que mulheres são mais estáveis no sentido de serem menos propensas a migrar, a evadir e a mudarem de instituições depois do ingresso.
This paper studies the policy that unified the admission system to Brazilian Higher Education. The policy consists of the reformulation of the Enem, in 2009, and the implementation of Sisu platform, in 2010. By using student level admission data from 2006 to 2014, this research seeks to investigate the impact of this policy on both the inter and intra state migration and on the dropout of students. We matched identified databases from the National Institute of Study and Research (Inep) to achieve a more accurate measure of student migration. We found that the admission of a given student in a program that offers places through SISU increases the probability of him being an interstate migrant by 2.9 percentage points (pp), but reduces the likelihood of him being a intrastate migrant by up to 3.95 pp. Concerning the results for dropout, we found that the university\'s commitment to Sisu raises the first year dropout probability by 4.5 pp. In addition, a student who joins a program that offer places via Sisu is more likely to change to another institution before finishing his course. In this case, social aid is effective in keeping the student in the same institution, but not on the same course. Finally, we found that women are more stable in the sense of being less likely to migrate, to dropout or change institutions after their admission.

Det konfliktdrabbade Turkiet är hemlandet för denna studies fyra respondenter. Syftet var att undersöka dessa internationella studentmigranters syn och uppfattning angående tre teman; migration, återvändande och våld, vilket gjordes med den instabila politiska situationen i landet i åtanke. Analysen gjordes genom en kvalitativ innehållsanalys av det producerade materialet där materialet klassificerades i koder och underkoder, för att kunna jämföra respondenternas uppfattningar utifrån den teoretiska grunden.Studien genererade en mängd resultat från vilka slutsatser kunde dras. Begreppet migration kopplades ihop med flyktingar, vilket visade på en vilja att hellre definiera sig som cirkulär migrant då detta innebär fler och bättre möjligheter i mottagarlandet, samt efter avklarade studier. Att hellre identifiera sig som en världsmedborgare än att tillhöra den nationella identiteten visades av flertalet vara viktigt. Begrepp som brain drain, brain circulation och push-pullfaktorer togs upp för att förstå processen från ett statligt perspektiv.Då våld diskuterades nämndes främst det direkta våldet, men alla respondenterna reflekterade över både strukturella och kulturella våldshandlingar så som diskriminering på olika grunder.
The conflict-threatened Turkey is the home country for this study's four respondents. The purpose was to investigate the views of international student migrants on three themes; migration, return migration and violence, which was decided upon and discussed with the unstable political situation in the country in mind. The analysis was done by a qualitative content analysis of the produced material, where the material was classified into codes and sub-codes, in order to be able to compare the respondents' perceptions based on the theoretical framework. The study generated several results from which conclusions could be drawn. The concept of migration was coupled with refugees, which indicated a willingness to better define themselves as circular migrants, as this means more and better opportunities in the recipient country, as well as after completed studies.Preferably identifying themselves as a world citizens rather than belonging to a national identity was shown by most of them. Concepts such as brain drain, brain circulation and push-pull factors were raised to understand the process from a state perspective.When violence was discussed, the direct violence was mainly mentioned, but all respondents reflected on both structural and cultural acts of violence such as discrimination on different grounds

Tyrimo uždaviniai buvo įvertinti studentų darbo lūkesčius, migracines nuostatas ir planus; nustatyti migracijos nuostatų skirtumus sociodemografinėse grupėse, bei įvertinti, kurie veiksniai – ekonominiai ar socialiniai yra lemiantys migracijai. Tyrimo metodika. Tyrimo metodai - kokybinis ir kiekybinis tyrimai. Kokybiniame tyrime dalyvavo 10 respondentų – vesta diskusija Focus grupėje; kiekybiniame tyrime - 206 respondentai – atlikta anoniminė anketinė apklausa. Statistinė duomenų analizė atlikta, naudojant statistinių programų rinkinio SPSS.20 versiją. Statistinių ryšių įvertinimui naudotas susijusių požymių χ2 (chi kvadrato) kriterijus, laisvės laipsnių skaičius ir statistinis reikšmingumas (p). Gautų duomenų tikrinimui pasirinktas statistinio reikšmingumo lygmuo lygus 0,05. Rezultatai. Tyrimo metu nustatyta, kad 77,2% apklaustųjų norėtų dirbti farmacinėje kompanijoje didmiestyje. Vertinant verslumą nustatyta, kad 75,7% norėtų kurti savo verslą. 67,5% respondentų tikisi uždirbti nuo 2001 iki 4000 litų atlyginimą. Vertinant skirtumus tarp sociodemografinių grupių nustatyta, kad moterims labiau nei vyrams yra svarbūs socialiniai darbo aspektai. 92,2% studentų Lietuvoje migruotų dėl didesnio atlyginimo ir geresnių darbo sąlygų. The aim of the research is to evaluate LSMU MA FF work expectations, internal and external migration. The tasks of the research are to evaluate students’ work expectations, attitudes to migration and plans, to indicate different attitudes to migration in socio-demographic groups and to evaluate which factors – economic or social are determining migration process. Methodology of the research. Qualitative and quantitative research methods were used. 10 respondents participated in the qualitative research – discussion in Focus group was conducted; 206 respondents participated in the quantitative research – anonymous questionnaire was used for the quantitative research. Statistical data analysis performed using SPSS.20 version. The criterion of the related features χ2 (chi square), the number of degrees of freedom and the statistical significance (p) were used for the evaluation of the statistical relations. The statistical significance level equal 0.05 was chosen for the verification of the received data. Results. 77.2% of the respondents expect to work in a pharmaceutical company. 75.7% of the respondents would like to establish their own business. 67.5% of the respondents expect to earn 2001 – 4000 LTL. While evaluating the differences among socio-demographic groups it was determined that social aspects are more important for women than men. 92.2% of the students would migrate within a country for a better work conditions and higher salary. Esta produÃÃo acadÃmica analisa a migraÃÃo, presenÃa e permanÃncia de estudantes oriundos de distintos paÃses africanos para o Brasil, especificamente, na cidade de Fortaleza-CE, nos processos que designo de âDiÃspora Africana no Cearà no sÃculo XXIâ. Esta DiÃspora à fruto da migraÃÃo estudantil internacional de alunos de Ãfrica que, se deslocam ao Brasil para desenvolver formaÃÃo universitÃria em instituiÃÃes de ensino superior (IES) pÃblicas e privadas. Interessa-me compreender os processos de ressignificaÃÃes identitÃrias nas trajetÃrias e percursos desses estudantes nesta DiÃspora, focando o seu cotidiano, a partir da trÃplice dimensÃo: ser negro, africano e imigrante âtemporÃrioâ. Este estudo traz, como aspecto inovador o fato de investigar, nÃo apenas a realidade dos alunos africanos inseridos em universidades pÃblicas, auferindo bolsas de estudos, no Ãmbito de convÃnios, como o Programa Estudantes ConvÃnio â GraduaÃÃo (PEC-G), Programa Estudante ConvÃnio â PÃs-GraduaÃÃo (PEC-PG) e outros acordos, mas adentrar, tambÃm, na realidade vivenciada pelo amplo contingente de africanos matriculados em faculdades particulares, a dependerem da ajuda econÃmica de parentes e familiares residentes em Ãfrica e ao redor do mundo. Este grupo de estudantes, hoje majoritÃrio, apresenta inserÃÃes precÃrias no contexto de Fortaleza, enfrentando dificuldades econÃmico-financeiras, para garantir o pagamento de mensalidades nas instituiÃÃes universitÃrias privadas e manter a prÃpria sobrevivÃncia nesta metrÃpole. Assim, este segmento de estudantes africanos tem que se envolver em trabalhos informais e precarizados, considerados âirregularesâ pelas autoridades brasileiras, sujeitos a violaÃÃo de direitos trabalhistas, com longas jornadas e baixos salÃrios. Neste estudo sociolÃgico exploro distintas esferas da vida desses sujeitos nos percursos diaspÃricos, quais sejam: cotidiano; inserÃÃo no contexto universitÃrio; trabalho; interaÃÃes com organismos e instituiÃÃes pÃblicas e privados no acesso a mercadorias e serviÃos; associativismo em agremiaÃÃes estudantis; utilizaÃÃo das tecnologias de informaÃÃo e comunicaÃÃo (TICâs) e das redes sociais virtuais na internet; processos de saÃde e de adoecimento; conjuntura de violÃncia urbana e, mesmo, violÃncia que culminam com a morte de estudantes africanos; formas de lazer; processos de sociabilidade entre africanos e brasileiros; festas africanas e interaÃÃes afetivossexuais. O estudo revela como os estudantes oriundos de Ãfrica sÃo alvo de preconceito e discriminaÃÃo racial, por conta da cor da pele e da prÃpria origem africana. Neste processo analÃtico, trabalho como fio condutor, a ideia de que, nas trajetÃrias e percursos diaspÃricos, os estudantes africanos constituem mÃltiplos pertencimentos identitÃrios, forjados em Ãfrica e no cotidiano no Brasil que, ora tendem à afirmaÃÃo, ora tendem à negaÃÃo de africanidade e negritude. As identidades sÃo ressignificadas, particularmente, no contato com a alteridade racial e cultural no contexto cearense, em meio a mÃltiplas formas de inclusÃo e de discriminaÃÃo racial. As identidades ressignificadas expressam-se em comportamentos, atitudes, modos de vida, formas de ser e estar. Estes processos sÃo mediados por dimensÃes objetivas como, roupas, vestimentas e trajes, calÃados, cabelos tranÃados, bem como por dimensÃes simbÃlicas, como lÃnguas faladas no cotidiano, com destaque para o crioulo, culinÃria e modos de alimentaÃÃo, expressÃes religiosas, sexualidades e discursos. Nesta anÃlise compreensiva, utilizo como aportes teÃricos, os estudos PÃs-Coloniais, a partir das ideias de William Du Bois, Paul Gilroy, Stuart Hall, dentre outros. No plano metodolÃgico, utilizo, como recursos investigativos, a observaÃÃo sistemÃtica, entrevistas abertas, em profundidade, mescladas com conversas informais, tanto a nÃvel presencial, como no espaÃo virtual, sempre registradas no âcaderno de campoâ.
This academic production aims at evaluating the migration, presence and permanence of students in Brazil from different African countries, specifically in Fortaleza-CE, according to developments that I designate as the "African Diaspora in Cearà in the 21st Century." This Diaspora is the result of the international migration of African students who travel to Brazil to obtain a university education in public and private institutions (IES). I am engaged in understanding the processes of identity-related re-signification in the trajectories and paths of these students in this Diaspora, focusing on their daily life, from a triple dimension configuration: being black, being African and being a "temporary" immigrant. This study has as an innovative aspect the fact of investigating, not only the daily life of African students enrolled in public universities, receiving scholarships, within the scope of the agreements, such as the Programa Estudantes ConvÃnio â Under-graduation (PEC-G), and the Programa Estudante ConvÃnio âGraduation (PEC-PG) and other agreements, but also the experience of a large contingent of Africans enrolled in private colleges, depending on the financial assistance of relatives and relatives residing in Africa and other parts of the world. This group of students, the largest now, presents precarious insertions in the context of Fortaleza, facing economic and financial difficulties to guarantee the payment of tuition fees in private university institutions and to maintain their own survival in the metropolis. Thus, this segment of African students has to engage in informal and precarious jobs, considered "irregular" by Brazilian authorities, subject to violations of labor rights, with long hours and low wages. In this sociological study I explore different spheres of life of these subjects who are distinguished for their diaspora-related journeys, namely, daily life, insertion in the university context, job, Interactions with public and private bodies and institutions to access goods and services, integration with student associations, use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) and virtual social networks on the Internet, health and illness processes, the conjuncture of urban violence and even gender violence that culminate in the death of African students, leisure forms, sociability between Africans and Brazilians, African celebrations, besides sexual and affective interactions. The study reveals how students from Africa are subjected to prejudice and racial discrimination because of their color and African origin. In this analytic process, I use as a guiding thread, the idea that, in diaspora-related trajectories and journeys, African students stand for multiple identity shapes, forged in Africa and in everyday life in Brazil that on the one hand, tend to affirm, but on the other hand, tend to deny Africanism and blackness. Identities are re-signified, particularly, in the contact with racial and cultural alterity in the context of CearÃ, in the midst of multiple forms of racial inclusion and discrimination. Re-signified identities are expressed in behaviors, attitudes, ways of life, and ways of being. These processes are mediated by objective dimensions such as clothing, costumes, shoes, braided hair, as well as by symbolic dimensions such as the languages spoken in everyday life, especially Creole, cooking and eating modes, religious expressions, sexuality and speech. In this evaluating analysis, I use as theoretical contributions, post colonial studies, from the ideas of William Du Bois, Paul Gilroy, Stuart Hall, among others. At the methodological level, I use investigative resources as systematic observation, open in-depth interviews mixed with informal conversations, both face-to-face and in virtual space, always recorded in the "field notebook".

Recent years have witnessed the large number of Chinese immigrants in Canada. However, talk about the return migration of Chinese immigrants is circulating within the Canada's Chinese communities, especially among Chinese immigrants who have obtained Canadian academic credentials. This inquiry explores ten Chinese immigrants' perceptions about their immigration and living experiences in Canada. My goal is to understand, from a social-cultural-historical context, the phenomenon of Chinese-Canadian return migration among recent Chinese immigrants in Canada. The theoretical framework is derived primarily from Bourdieu's capital theory and his critical approach to the concept of habitus . Drawing on an interpretative, qualitative approach, I examine social, cultural, historical forces that influence the ways these Chinese immigrants perceive, negotiate and reposition themselves in facing various challenges and struggles. Traditionally, research on return migration of Chinese immigrants in Canada has focused on the economic and social integration of immigrants in the host country. I argue that "Chinese cultural habitus", such as the profound influence of Confucianism and Taoism that Chinese immigrants inherited, played critical roles in their actions, attitudes and decision-making about their return migration. I collected the participants' narratives for a one and half year period from August 2006 to March 2008 primarily through open-ended interviews, and various documentation such as field notes, reflexive notes and Canadian Statistics. Analyses of the data suggest that the unrecognized foreign credentials and the limited social capital of Chinese immigrants are the primary factors that disadvantage their social mobility. Chinese cultural values and beliefs have great impact on Chinese immigrants' perceptions and behaviors during their journey of crossing different social spaces, assuming different positionings and negotiating among their multiple identities.
