Streszczenie:
This chapter examines the evolution of the structuralist school of economic thought in the Brazilian context. The intellectual roots of structuralism are analyzed, as is the influence this set of ideas has had on economic policy formulation in Brazil. Prominent structuralists such as Celso Furtado and Raul Prebisch influenced the governments of Getúlio Vargas and Juscelino Kubitschek, while Furtado himself played a key role in establishing the national development bank (BNDES) and the Northeast development agency, SUDENE. Furtado “historicized” CEPAL structuralism and showed how losses in the coffee sector were spread across the whole economy in the 1930s. He furthermore developed a model of internal colonialism and arguably was the first dependency theorist. The crisis of structuralism in the mid-1960s ultimately resulted in neostructuralism in 1990, a reformed version of the doctrine that emphasized the export market, technological change, and continual “learning by doing.”

Streszczenie:
This article examines the structural origins of developmental politics by focusing on the argument that “bad politicians” are the reason for the problem with politics in developing countries, or that great leaders are responsible for development. Using the word “structuralism” to describe the underlying structures of society that affect developmental politics, it considers the claim that institutions are the cause behind political decisions taken in government. Two different, but related structural causes are analyzed, namely geography and demography. The article concludes by discussing how a more structural view of development makes it possible to peer into the future, especially with respect to population growth, population aging, and urbanization.

Streszczenie:
The main types of mathematical structuralism that have been proposed and developed to the point of permitting systematic and instructive comparison are four: structuralism based on model theory, carried out formally in set theory (e.g., first- or second-order Zermelo–Fraenkel set theory), referred to as STS (for set-theoretic structuralism); the approach of philosophers such as Shapiro and Resnik of taking structures to be sui generis universals, patterns, or structures in an ante rem sense (explained in this article), referred to as SGS (for sui generis structuralism); an approach based on category and topos theory, proposed as an alternative to set theory as an overarching mathematical framework, referred to as CTS (for category-theoretic structuralism); and a kind of eliminative, quasi-nominalist structuralism employing modal logic, referred to as MS (for modal-structuralism). This article takes these up in turn, guided by few questions, with the aim of understanding their relative merits and the choices they present.

Streszczenie:
This chapter suggests that structuralism and poststructuralism should be understood as part of a ‘turn’ in social theory and philosophy to ‘systems.’ It explores Claude Lévi-Strauss’s approach to myth, demonstrating that his approach entwines elements from linguistics and dynamic systems theory that point ‘back’ to formalism and ‘forward’ to poststructuralism. It then examines Lévi-Strauss’s critique of evolutionist and functionalist accounts of ‘primitive’ religion and his engagements with work by Frazer and Malinowski. The chapter shows the extent to which Lévi-Strauss’s approach undermined notions of progress and accounts of the regulatory role of religion in the closed social system described by functionalism. The chapter then moves on to explore Jacques Derrida’s account of language and deconstruction and the critique of the metaphysics of presence, suggesting that deconstruction also privileges the idea of the open system. This is shown to have significant implications for textual, historical, and sociological studies of religion.

Streszczenie:
The properties and relations that perform a role in mathematical reasoning arise from the basic relations that obtain among mathematical objects. It is in terms of these basic relations that mathematicians identify the objects they intend to study. The way in which mathematicians identify these objects has led some philosophers to draw metaphysical conclusions about their nature. These philosophers have been led to claim that mathematical objects are positions in structures or akin to positions in patterns. This article retraces their route from (relatively uncontroversial) facts about the identification of mathematical objects to high metaphysical conclusions. Beginning with the natural numbers, how are they identified? The mathematically significant properties and relations of natural numbers arise from the successor function that orders them; the natural numbers are identified simply as the objects that answer to this basic function. But the relations (or functions) that are used to identify a class of mathematical objects may often be defined over what appear to be different kinds of objects.
