Pełny tekst źródłaAIn the feld of the alternative therapy and of the mind body approche, meditation as a new object of research in this aera show a lot of improvment in the last twenty years, with a new development in Europe. The objective of this thesis is to show the great interest of this concept inpsychotherapy with a clarification in its three main areas (concentration, mindfulness, and movement meditation), with a focus on mindfulness meditation linked to the behavioural and cognitive therapies, and with an neurological and physiological highlights. Additionnaly to that, we will develop on a pratical way, the MBSR (Mindfulness based stress reduction) approach linked to the work of J Kabat Zinn (1990) with experimental assessment on stress, anxiety, quality of life, coping and depression on two populations (student and diabetic type 1), and case studies. At the end, we will focus the discussion ont the effectiveness of MBSR linked to neurological researches and integration with psuchotherpies

Pełny tekst źródłaMethods aimed at altering the perception of stressful situations such as the MBSR have come into being following the stress after-effects involved for workers. This problematic situation let us anticipate the possible relevance to the occupational stress management of the MBCT program combining both the MBSR mindfulness meditative practices and cognitive therapy elements. Objective : To shed light on the concepts of mindfulness and awareness through semantic research and to achieve a MBCT scientific litterature review. To check its applicability to the context of occupational stress by means of two pilot experimentations in non-clinical populations. Method : Design of an occupational stress-adapted manualized program and implementation as a randomized MBCT/Control comparative study and as a case study. Filling of scales relative to stress (PSS, Indice de Stress au Travail de Légeron), stress-associated symptoms (MBI, GHQ-28, BDI-13), coping strategies (Brief COPE) and mindfulness skills (PHLMS) Pre- and Post-program and gathering of accounts. Results : Significative Pre-Post improvements at almost all of the measures except for the personal accomplishment subscale of the MBI and for perceived stress (PSS). Statistical significance on the MBI emotional exhaustion subscale and on the work-contextualized perceived stress measures in the inter-group comparison. Improvement of psychosocial skills in work stress situations. Conclusion : Applicability potential of the MBCT to occupational stress management. Despite a number of limitations, these studies express an indisputable interest both for the research and for companies on the look-out for optimal cost-benefit ratios

Pełny tekst źródłaThe purpose of this research is to develop a mechanism to explain how mindfulness affects how middle managers experience and carry out their managerial role. We first reviewed a corpus of literature on mindfulness and middle and first line managers. The research question arises from a twofold observation: firstly, existing research into mindfulness and management does not offer an explanatory approach to the relationship between mindfulness and its impact in organizations and, secondly, the research on mindfulness has not examined the leadership practices of middle managers. Our research follows an interpretative paradigm and develops an abductive approach in order to propose a grounded theory as suggested by Glaser and Strauss (1967). We applied a hybrid exploratory and quantitative approach based on case studies and action research implemented through a protocol of mindfulness development of thirteen managers in two different organizations. This enabled us to classify the perceived effects of mindfulness on managerial perceptions and practices and to propose an explanatory mechanism for how these effects come into play. This mechanism shows how mindfulness can free managers from reactive behavior patterns at work, allowing them to develop their emotional intelligence, reduce stress levels and gain greater self-confidence. By changing the participants’ experiences as managers, mindfulness changed their managerial practices in three key areas: they learned to communicate in a less conflictual manner and listen more to their professional entourage, they tend to delegate more and have developed closer relationships with their teams, and they have improved their ability to organize and prioritize their work. These changes were corroborated by their teams who reported improved motivation and well-being as well as less work-related stress. The research underscores the influence of mindfulness on the day-to-day experience of managers, the importance of taking into account emotions in the workplace and the need to give managers working under strong professional constraints greater liberty

Pełny tekst źródłaAmnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) is characterized by a greater episodic memory decline than expected for age and education, without significantly interfering with functioning. Each year, 10 to 15% of aMCI older adults develop Alzheimer's disease (AD). Stress figures among predictors of aMCI progression to AD, possibly through neurotoxic effects of stress hormones such as cortisol. Mindfulness based interventions (MBI), shown effective to reduce stress on the psychological and physiological (i.e., cortisol) levels, appear as a relevant novel approach to prevent cognitive decline associated with AD. The aim of this doctoral memoir was to evaluate the impact of a MBI on the psychological and physiological stress of older adults with aMCI, compared to a psychoeducation based intervention (PBI). The preliminary data, presented in Chapter 4, suggest the potential benefits of MBI and also PBI to reduce physiological and psychological stress, respectively, among older adults with aMCI. Further research is essential considering that older adults have few interventions available and compromised quality of life. Indeed, improving well-being and productivity of older adults with aMCI, through interventions such as MBI or PBI, could lead to considerable gains regarding AD’s socio-economic burden, a major public health challenge for Canada's aging population

Pełny tekst źródłaThe thesis aims to investigate the effects of two techniques of emotional reglulation, mindfulness meditation and yoga, on stress reactivity, alexithymia, and its relevant variables. Forty-four healthy particiants were ramdomly allocated into 3 groups; mindfulness meditation, yoga and control. The results showed that the 8-weeks of mindfulness meditation (one session/week with an instructor and two sessions as home-practice) significantly improved mindfulness skill and concentration. While, the 8-weeks of yoga significantly ameliorated heart rate variability, (increased HF(n.u.), decreased LF(n.u.) and LF/HF). However, there was no significant interaction effect of group x time for stress hormones. Furthermore, there was no significant interaction effect of group x time for alexithymia. We add a qualitative analysis to better understand the process behind the changes following theinterventions. It indicated that the mindfulness meditation seemed to be the most effective intervention for alexithymia. Individual differences such as personality, attitudes and confidence on the effectiveness of intervention as well as the level of physical activity should be taken into account in the choice of the most appropriate intervention for a specific profile. Despite the study limitations due to the small subjects number in the different groups, it appears that mindfulness meditation and yoga seem to be an effective intervention for stress management, and mindfulness meditation would be suggested for alexithymia

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the present Ph.D. project, I examined the efficacy of four strategies (i.e., self-administered mindfulness, biofeedback, being in nature, and emotional social support) on stress reduction of individuals. To examine the empirical robustness of stress regulation strategies, we conducted two meta-analyses of the literature on these strategies, and one multi-site study experimentally examining the effect of one of the strategies (self-administered mindfulness) on stress regulation. In chapter 2, I present the result of a Registered Report meta-analysis in which we appraised the available evidence of being in nature and emotional social support on stress levels. After applying our publication bias correction techniques, we found an effect for the former strategy but not for the latter one. In chapter 3, I conducted a pre-registered meta-analysis that investigated whether two internal regulation strategies (i.e. self-administered mindfulness and biofeedback) could be considered reliable strategies for regulating stress levels. We found no evidence for the reduction of stress levels for these two strategies. Finally, in chapter 4, I present the results of a highly-powered multi-site study that investigated the efficacy of four single, brief stand-alone mindfulness exercises (versus three active control conditions) on self-reported experiences of stress in a population unfamiliar with mindfulness meditation. Results of the multi-site study provided evidence that participants had lower levels of self-reported levels of stress when they listened to one of the mindfulness exercises compared to those that were in the control conditions. In both meta-analyses, the high heterogeneity, the low-quality of the included studies, and the presence of publication bias cast doubts on the strength of evidence behind the studied effects. For what concerns the multi-site project, even if we cannot exclude the presence of a demand effect, our results hold promise for the efficacy of self-administered mindfulness interventions for the downregulation of stress.Taken together these studies suggest that stress levels can be reduced by relying on strategies that are non-pharmacological, non-invasive, and low-cost. Future studies (preferably in the form of Registered Reports) should try to make up for these shortcomings of the literature with well-powered studies and with the use of physiological measurements that could reduce the problem of the demand effect for studies on mindfulness
