Streszczenie:
In October 2020, the B2B (business-to-business) background music company Soundtrack Your Brand—formerly Spotify Business—launched the world’s first full-catalog on-demand streaming service for background music. Although background music providers have licensed, curated, and distributed music to businesses for nearly a century, they have only recently started embracing the new possibilities of streaming. Now, streaming is rapidly influencing the background music industry’s features, music selection practices, and economics. While scholars in music and media studies have extensively studied B2C (business-to-consumer) streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, they have largely neglected streaming’s impact on background music. This article investigates how streaming is impacting the B2B background music industry, drawing upon platform analysis, marketing materials, and interviews with background music CEOs and researchers. After reviewing background music’s history and effects, the article examines how streaming is influencing business-oriented background music features, such as scheduling, zoning, messaging, and monitoring. It then considers streaming’s impact on background music selection practices, demonstrating how businesses are increasingly using features popularized by mainstream consumer services, such as playlists, algorithmic recommendations, and massive catalogs of music. The final section explores how streaming is shaping the economics of the background music industry, particularly for rightsholders who have historically been underpaid billions of dollars in public performance royalties. I argue that streaming may improve background music’s efficiency for businesses, but it also potentially reifies broader concerns about social control, surveillance, and inequitable artist remuneration that have become increasingly prevalent in the streaming age.

Streszczenie:
In this article, Austin Walker discusses streaming, the practice of broadcasting the gameplay footage. Providing a brief analysis of the range of streaming practices, Walker argues that streaming represents a sea change in how players share and collaborate, adding new sorts of social interactivity to an experience that was, for so long, solitary. Live streaming’s novelty grants it special status as a practice still in formation, making it especially useful in analyzing how late capitalism identifies and appropriates fresh cultural activity--doing so in this case through the development of an infrastructure that supports and encourages voluntary self-surveillance. While there are resistive elements of live-streaming, such as allowing new voices access to broadcast capabilities, streaming also represents socialized labour. Walker separates streaming into two stances: the active streaming posture, where streamers voluntarily choose to broadcast their play, and the passive streaming posture, where streaming is automatically incorporated into the hardware and/or software of the gaming platform and players are unable to opt in or out.

<p>Nowadays, Spark Streaming, a computing framework based on Spark, is widely used to process streaming data such as social media data, IoT sensor data or web logs. Due to the extensive utilization of streaming media data analysis, performance optimization for Spark Streaming has gradually developed into a popular research topic. Several methods for enhancing Spark Streaming's performance include task scheduling, resource allocation and data skew optimization, which primarily focus on how to manually tune the parameter configuration. However, it is indeed very challenging and inefficient to adjust more than 200 parameters by means of continuous debugging. In this paper, we propose an improved dueling double deep Q-network (DQN) technique for parameter tuning, which can significantly improve the performance of Spark Streaming. This approach fuses reinforcement learning and Gaussian process regression to cut down on the number of iterations and speed convergence dramatically. The experimental results demonstrate that the performance of the dueling double DQN method with Gaussian process regression can be enhanced by up to 30.24%.</p>

Dynamic adaptive streaming over HTTP (DASH) is an effective method for improving video streaming’s quality of experience (QoE). However, the majority of existing schemes rely on heuristic algorithms, and the learning-based schemes that have recently emerged also have a problem in that their performance deteriorates in a specific environment. In this study, we propose an adaptive streaming scheme that applies online reinforcement learning. When QoE degradation is confirmed, the proposed scheme adapts to changes in the client’s environment by upgrading the ABR model while performing video streaming. In order to adapt the adaptive bitrate (ABR) model to a changing network environment while performing video streaming, the neural network model is trained with a state-of-the-art reinforcement learning algorithm. The proposed scheme’s performance was evaluated using simulation-based experiments under various network conditions. The experimental results confirmed that the proposed scheme performed better than the existing schemes.

Audio streaming services have made it easier for countries around the world to listen to each other's music. This expansion in listeners' access to global content, however, has raised questions about streaming's impact on the import and export flows of music between countries and their preferences for local or global content. Here, we analyze five and a half years of all streaming data from Spotify, a global music streaming service, and find that preferences for local content have increased from 2014 through 2019, reversing previously noted trends. Perhaps correspondingly, both common official language and geographic proximity between countries increasingly shape listener consumption during this period, particularly for younger audiences. Further, we show that these trends persist across different genres, listener age groups, and early- and late-adopters of streaming, providing new insights into this newest phase in the continued evolution of music and its impact on listeners around the world.

This paper focuses on the continuities, rather than the ruptures, between digital television and past media forms. It situates the metaphor of “streaming” in contrast to and connection with previous fluid metaphors that have been used to describe different models of media transmission. From the early use of aqueous vocabulary that shaped popular and scientific understandings of electricity transmission to the seminal studies of mass communication concerning the flows of information, images of fluidity have long shaped cultural understandings of the inner logics of media infrastructures. Building on the work of media archaeologist Erkki Huhtamo, I approach these metaphors as “recurrent topoi” in media culture.

AbstractThis article explores surveillance in cloud-based music streaming. Key catalysts in the transition from ownership- to access-based models of music distribution, services like Spotify, Pandora, or Deezer have positioned themselves as a means of reintegrating listeners into “digital enclosures” over which rights holders exercise greater control. Yet streaming's promise of remonetizing musical commodities demonetized by filesharing has been called into doubt by difficulties in converting users of advertising-based “freemium” services into paying subscribers. In need of alternative means of extracting value from users, streaming platforms have increasingly refashioned themselves as enterprises whose business extends beyond music-related services to encompass the collection, aggregation, and exchange of user data. In pursuing this strategy, streaming platforms place themselves in direct competition with other new media companies trading in user data. In order to distinguish themselves from such competitors, streaming platforms cast music as a particularly valuable source of data, offering privileged access to listeners’ innermost selves. But they also cast music as an ideal tracking device, accompanying individuals across a variety of social, physical and geographical spaces. In this way, the very attributes that make music so powerful a “technology of the self” facilitate its transformation into an equally powerful technology of surveillance.

Building its present identity from the reimagined recollections of a past age of industry, the steampunk movement’s array of antiquated yet spectacular machines have become hallmarks of our fascination with technology’s history. In this article, I will trace the movement’s retrofuturistic sensibilities through a wave of short films and web series that set themselves within worlds that are constructed from anachronistic devices that belong to neither the past nor the present. Instead, these are texts that, whether constructed by amateur filmmakers, professionals - and a range of practices in-between - use their science fictional identities to disrupt the seemingly linear trajectory of our media’s historical progress. Through them, the aesthetics of nineteenth-century photographic techniques and special effects are reimagined through the lens of current streaming platforms, modern computer-generated imagery and a new breed of maker cultures who desire to conflate cutting-edge innovation with the first wave of invention and experimentation that breathed life into our visual media. Most significantly, however, by exploring the proliferation and popularization of neo-Victorian machinery within the vast array of short films that have been both distributed and produced through highly digitized practices, the steampunk genre will be used to examine representations of craftsmanship and “making” that have become embedded within contemporary popular culture.

Integrity-linked issues have become increasingly serious and attracted considerable attention regarding the sustainability of live streaming; therefore, live streaming anchors and suppliers have become increasingly concerned about their ongoing marketing. Moreover, streaming platforms are also beginning to focus on sustainable development. Determining how live streaming anchor behavior, supplier behavior, and streaming platform strategic decision affect live streaming is essential for achieving the healthy and sustainable development of live streaming ecosystems. However, the game among live streaming anchor behavior, supplier behavior, and streaming platform strategic decisions, which the live streaming ecosystem strongly depends on, has attracted little attention. This study constructed a game model of value co-creation evolution in live streaming ecosystems, with the live streaming anchors, suppliers, and streaming platforms as the main subject. The evolutionary stable strategies of the game were analyzed, and the influence of typical factors on the system was discussed. The results showed that the best evolutionary stability strategy is that live streaming anchors and suppliers choose honesty, and streaming platforms have strict regulation, which is the optimal strategic objective for value co-creation. The appropriate rewards and punishments inherent in a streaming platform can help regulate the behavior of the live streaming anchor and supplier; specifically, great rewards and severe punishments of the streaming platform can be applied to incentivize the honest behavior of the live streaming anchor and supplier. This study provides insights for designing appropriate policies for live streaming platforms to promote sustainable development.

The isolation requirements of the coronavirus epidemic and the intuitive display advantages of live-streaming have led to an increasing number of retailers shifting to social live-streaming platforms and e-commerce live-streaming platforms to promote and sell their products in real time. However, the provision of live-streaming services will also incur high live-streaming effort costs. In this paper, we develop two decision models for retailers to sell goods through a single online shop and both online shop and live-streaming room; we also present the optimal decisions of pricing and live-streaming efforts. Furthermore, we identify the profitability conditions for retailers to determine when to provide live-streaming services. In addition, we examine the impact of the provision of live-streaming services on the optimal price and live-streaming effort. We obtain three findings. First, there is a unique optimal decision on the price and live-streaming effort under certain conditions. Second, when the effect coefficient of the live-streaming room reaches a certain threshold, there are enough customers who enter the live-streaming room to watch and buy and it is profitable for retailers to provide live-streaming service. Finally, the optimal price and live-streaming effort increase with the increase in average return loss, the effect coefficient of live-streaming effort, and the extra return rate and decrease with the increase in the proportion of customers who choose to buy in the online shop and the price discount coefficient in the live-streaming room.

A short substantive and industrial history of streaming is provided, recognizing its many manifestations and variations. Five key dimensions are identified, and trends and traits within each of them discussed: (1) professional versus user-generated streaming, (2) legal versus piracy streaming, (3) on-demand versus live streaming, (4) streaming on dedicated versus multi-feature platforms, and (5) niche versus general-audience streaming. The article concludes by pointing out how streaming is a concept that metaphorically unites media research across industries, practices, and media forms, encouraging more comparative research.

This paper aims to analyze Internet-based streaming video service in the communication media with variable bit rates. The proposed scheme on Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) using the internet network that adapts to the protocol Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP). DASH technology allows a video in the video segmentation into several packages that will distreamingkan. DASH initial stage is to compress the video source to lower the bit rate video codec uses H.26. Video compressed further in the segmentation using MP4Box generates streaming packets with the specified duration. These packages are assembled into packets in a streaming media format Presentation Description (MPD) or known as MPEG-DASH. Streaming video format MPEG-DASH run on a platform with the player bitdash teritegrasi bitcoin. With this scheme, the video will have several variants of the bit rates that gave rise to the concept of scalability of streaming video services on the client side. The main target of the mechanism is smooth the MPEG-DASH streaming video display on the client. The simulation results show that the scheme based scalable video streaming MPEG-DASH able to improve the quality of image display on the client side, where the procedure bufering videos can be made constant and fine for the duration of video views

As a reflection of shifting and fluid experiences in time and space, live streaming can reduce losses in the tourism industry associated with travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared with the use of live streaming activities in entertainment, shopping, sport, e-sport, religious, educational, and academic settings, the tourism context has yet to be explored. This study takes China as a case to examine tourism practices related to live streaming. Specifically, 48,114 social media posts were subjected to systematic content analysis. The dataset contained live streaming content related to 147 countries and 34 Chinese provincial administrative regions between 2010 and 2021. Findings revealed the following: (1) the development of tourism live streaming in China can be classified into germination, exploration, and opportunity stages; (2) live content mainly evoked positive emotions, whereas negative sentiment resulted from illegal or boring content; (3) users’ perceptions of tourism live streaming content involved institutions, live streaming tools, live streaming attractions, the live streaming economy, people, facilities and information, time, and regions; and (4) live streaming tools and attractions constituted the core of the identified semantic network and had the strongest regulation capabilities in tourism live streaming activities. Findings shed light on latent cultural meanings in social media communications, where tourism live streaming features high-frequency linguistic signs.

As a novel sales strategy, live-streamed selling has drawn considerable interest. In this paper, we study a dual-channel live-streaming supply chain consisted of a single manufacturer, a moderate live streamer and a live-streaming platform. We construct two scenarios, the retail live streaming and commissioned live streaming modes, under manufacturer self-live streaming and investigates the optimal mode with the Stackelberg games. The study discovers: (1) Under the commissioned live streaming mode, the price of Internet celebrity live streaming is less expensive than that under manufacturer self-live streaming within a specific commission ratio and is proportionate to the commission ratio. (2) Under the retail live streaming mode, only when consumers' preferences are more concentrated on the manufacturer self-live streaming, the price of Internet celebrity live streaming is less than the manufacturer self-live stream channel. (3) In both scenarios, Internet celebrity live-streaming sales effort is consistently lower than the manufacturer self-live stream channel. Additionally, the consumer's sensitivity coefficient and the trust degree in Internet-celebrity streamer, the personal impact of Internet-celebrity streamer, and the proportion of impulsive consumers are all positively correlated with the price, sales effort, and profit of both channels.

The growing live streaming economy and virtual reality (VR) technologies have sparked interest in VR streaming among streamers and viewers. However, limited research has been conducted to understand this emerging streaming practice. To address this gap, we conducted an in-depth thematic analysis of 34 streaming videos from 12 VR streamers with varying levels of experience, to explore the current practices, interaction styles, and strategies, as well as to investigate the challenges and opportunities for VR streaming. Our findings indicate that VR streamers face challenges in building emotional connections and maintaining streaming flow due to technical problems, lack of fluid transitions between physical and virtual environments, and not intentionally designed game scenes. As a response, we propose six design implications to encourage collaboration between game designers and streaming app developers, facilitating fluid, rich, and broad interactions for an enhanced streaming experience. In addition, we discuss the use of streaming videos as user-generated data for research, highlighting the lessons learned and emphasizing the need for tools to support streaming video analysis. Our research sheds light on the unique aspects of VR streaming, which combines interactions across displays and space.
