Streaming now a days have been of great use when comes to Social Media. Streaming of data have made it easy for Companies to understand the pros and cons of their product. Streaming acts as a survey now a days which a few years ago were done by a team of individual using pen and papers. In order to collect and process the streaming data from various streaming sites to produce an analytical report that helps to get a clear pictorial representation of events, the assets of streaming process generates a huge volume of real time data mainly referred to as “Big Data.” In order to aggregate, store and analyses the streaming data that are being generated Day-By-Day we get into the concept of Hadoop and Flume Technologies, API that helps to collect data from Twitter/other streaming sites by using “#” tag/Keywords. Tweets by the News channel and retweets by the public are being collected.

The determinants of the strategies to be employed by video streaming sites are application (mobile devices or web browsers) and container of the video application. They affect video streaming network characteristics, which is often the traffic flow, and its quality. It is against this background that studies on streaming strategies suggested the need to investigate and identify the relationship between buffer time, video stream protocol, packet speed and size, upload time, and waiting period, specifically to aid network administrative support in case of network traffic bottlenecks. In view of this, this study investigates the network characteristics of YouTube and Vimeo, using experimental methodology, and involving WireShark as network analyzer. Google Chrome and Firefox are the web browsers employed, while packet size, protocols, packet interval, TCP window size and accumulation ratio are the metrics. Short ON-OFF, Long ON-OFF, and No ON-OFF cycles are the three streaming strategies identified. It is further shown that both Vimeo and YouTube employ these strategies but the choice depends on the container of the video streamed.

Live streaming is one of the modern methods that allows sellers to create, transmit, or broadcast some content on the internet in real-time, and it has been used by many small individual merchants. Understanding how live streaming contributes to online consumption is becoming increasingly important in social commerce as the live-streaming industry has grown more and more popular. However, the number of studies on live streaming is still quite limited in Vietnam. Therefore, this research will look at the mechanism that enables live streaming to boost customer trust in streamers. Using PLS-SEM on a sample of 360 respondents who viewed selling live streams on social network sites in Vietnam, we discovered that other members' endorsement, value similarity, hedonic value, and utilitarian value contribute to good para-social interaction. Next, utilitarian and hedonic values, streamer product expertise, and para-social interaction all positively affect trust in the streamers. The findings could help live-streaming sellers better understand their social interactions with viewers, resulting in increased customer trust. Doi: 10.28991/ESJ-2023-07-03-06 Full Text: PDF

✓ Treatment of brain tumors by intra-arterial (IA) chemotherapy is occasionally complicated by sites of focal toxicity in the brain and retina. A possible cause of focal toxicity is non-uniform drug delivery due to intravascular drug streaming. To investigate this phenomenon in vivo, the authors examined the distribution of drug delivery after internal carotid artery (ICA) infusion in rhesus monkeys. Carbon-14 (14C)-labeled iodoantipyrine was delivered into the ICA of eight monkeys at slow infusion rates (1% to 2% of ICA flow) or at fast infusion rates (20% of ICA flow) combined with additional techniques to promote mixing with ICA blood. Two monkeys received intravenous (IV) 14C-antipyrine. Uniformity of delivery was assessed by comparing high-to-low ratios of isotope concentration in four brain regions evaluated by quantitative autoradiography. There was striking non-uniformity of drug delivery in the slow IA infusion group, with as much as 13-fold differences in drug concentration in anatomically contiguous areas. The values of high-to-low concentration ratios (mean ± standard deviation) in individual autoradiographic planes were: 1) frontoparietal cortex: slow IA infusion 4.54 ± 2.07, fast IA infusion 1.71 ± 0.31, IV infusion 1.30 ± 0.174; 2) frontoparietal white matter: slow IA infusion 2.94 ± 1.45, fast IA infusion 1.59 ± 0.41, IV infusion 1.34 ± 0.21; 3) temporal cortex: slow IA infusion 5.43 ± 3.57, fast IA infusion 1.69 ± 0.24, IV infusion 1.67 ± 0.25; 4) basal ganglia: slow IA infusion 3.6 ± 2.9, fast IA infusion 1.18 ± 0.10, IV infusion 1.09 ± 0.04. Differences between concentration ratios after slow IA and fast IA infusion are significant (p < 0.01); those between fast IA and IV infusion are not significant. Intra-arterial drug administration at infusion rates analogous to those currently used clinically results in drug streaming with markedly heterogeneous drug deposition in the perfused hemisphere. This may cause suboptimal drug levels in the tumor, and toxic levels at sites within the perfused hemisphere. This effect can be abrogated by techniques that eliminate drug streaming.

ABSTRACT Models of the decoupling of baryons and photons during the recombination epoch predict the existence of a large-scale velocity offset between baryons and dark matter at later times, the so-called streaming velocity. In this paper, we use high resolution numerical simulations to investigate the impact of this streaming velocity on the spin and shape distributions of high-redshift minihaloes, the formation sites of the earliest generation of stars. We find that the presence of a streaming velocity has a negligible effect on the spin and shape of the dark matter component of the minihaloes. However, it strongly affects the behaviour of the gas component. The most probable spin parameter increases from ∼0.03 in the absence of streaming to ∼0.15 for a run with a streaming velocity of three times σrms, corresponding to 1.4 km s−1 at redshift z = 15. The gas within the minihaloes becomes increasingly less spherical and more oblate as the streaming velocity increases, with dense clumps being found at larger distances from the halo centre. The impact of the streaming velocity is also mass-dependent: less massive objects are influenced more strongly, on account of their shallower potential wells. The number of haloes in which gas cooling and runaway gravitational collapse occurs decreases substantially as the streaming velocity increases. However, the spin and shape distributions of gas that does manage to cool and collapse are insensitive to the value of the streaming velocity and we therefore do not expect the properties of the stars that formed from this collapsed gas to depend on the value of the streaming velocity. The spin and shape of this central gas clump are uncorrelated with the same properties measured on the scale of the halo as a whole.

Federated learning is a decentralized learning framework where participating sites are engaged in a tight collaboration, forcing them into symmetric sharing and the agreement in terms of data samples, feature spaces, model types and architectures, privacy settings, and training processes. We propose PubSub-ML, Publish-Subscribe for Machine Learning, as a solution in a loose collaboration setting where each site maintains local autonomy on these decisions. In PubSub-ML, each site is either a publisher or a subscriber or both. The publishers publish differentially private machine learning models and the subscribers subscribe to published models in order to construct customized models for local use, essentially benefiting from other sites' data by distilling knowledge from publishers' models while respecting data privacy. The term “model streaming” comes from the extension of PubSub-ML to decentralized data streams with concept drift. Our extensive empirical evaluation shows that PubSub-ML outperforms federated learning methods by a significant margin.

Big Data constituting from the information shared in the various social network sites have great relevance for research to be applied in diverse fields like marketing, politics, health or disaster management. Social network sites like Facebook and Twitter are now extensively used for conducting business, marketing products and services and collecting opinions and feedbacks regarding the same. Since data gathered from these sites regarding a product/brand are up-to-date and are mostly supplied voluntarily, it tends to be more realistic, massive and reflects the general public opinion. Its analysis on real time can lead to accurate insights and responding to the results sooner is undoubtedly advantageous than responding later. In this paper, a cloud based system for real time targeted advertising based on tweet sentiment analysis is designed and implemented using the big data processing engine Apache Spark, utilizing its streaming library. Application is meant to promote cross selling and provide better customer support.

Video streaming is the dominant contributor of today's Internet traffic. Consequently, estimating Quality of Experience (QoE) for video streaming is of paramount importance for network operators. The QoE of video streaming is directly dependent on the network conditions (e.g., bandwidth, delay, packet loss rate) referred to as the network Quality of Service (QoS). This inherent relationship between the QoS and the QoE motivates the use of supervised Machine Learning (ML) to build models that map the network QoS to the video QoE. In most ML works on QoE modeling, the training data is usually gathered in the wild by crowdsourcing or generated inside the service provider networks. However, such data is not easily accessible to the general research community. Consequently, the training data if not available beforehand, needs to be built up by controlled experimentation. Here, the target application is run under emulated network environments to build models that predict video QoE from network QoS. The network QoS can be actively measured outside the data plane of the application (outband), or measured passively from the video traffic (inband). These two distinct types of QoS correspond to the use cases of QoE forecasting (from end user devices) and QoE monitoring (from within the networks). In this thesis, we consider the challenges associated with network QoS-QoE modeling, which are 1) the large training cost of QoE modeling by controlled experimentation, and 2) the accurate prediction of QoE considering the large diversity of video contents and the encryption deployed by today's content providers. Firstly, QoE modeling by controlled experimentation is challenging due to the high training cost involved as each experiment usually consumes some non-negligible time to complete and the experimental space to cover is large (power the number of QoS features). The conventional approach is to experiment with QoS samples uniformly sampled in the entire experimental space. However, uniform sampling can result in significant similarity in the output labels, which increases the training cost while not providing much gain in the model accuracy. To tackle this problem, we advocate the use of active learning to reduce the number of experiments while not impacting accuracy. We consider the case of YouTube QoE modeling and show that active sampling provides a significant gain over uniform sampling in terms of achieving higher modeling accuracy with fewer experiments. We further evaluate our approach with synthetic datasets and show that the gain is dependent on the complexity of the experimental space. Overall, we present a sampling approach that is general and can be used in any QoSQoE modeling scenario provided that the input QoS features are fully controllable. Secondly, accurate prediction of QoE of video streaming can be challenging as videos offered by today's content providers vary significantly from fast motion sports videos to static lectures. On top of that, today's video traffic is encrypted, which means that network operators have little visibility into the video traffic making QoE monitoring difficult. Considering these challenges, we devise models that aim at accurate forecasting and monitoring of video QoE. For the scenario of QoE forecasting, we build a QoE indicator called YouScore that quantifies the percentage of videos in the catalog of a content provider that may play out smoothly (without interruptions) for a given outband network QoS. For the QoE monitoring scenario, we estimate the QoE using the inband QoS features obtained from the encrypted video traffic. Overall, for both scenarios (forecasting and monitoring), we highlight the importance of using features that characterize the video content to improve the accuracy of QoE modeling

People used to watch television when there were just a few channels and options to choose from. People also couldn't watch films and television shows according to their own preference or convenience as they had to stick to the program's scheduling. You weren't provided with the opportunity to re-watch the slot if you missed it. There were occasions when we would look in the newspaper for the channel's telecasting schedule. However, with the advent of OTT services, everything got simple, and users were able to stream anything they wanted, whenever they wanted. People might alter their entertainment schedules to fit their work schedules because to OTT. When people were trapped at home due to the epidemic and the box office was shut down by Covid-19, Streaming sites came to Bollywood's rescue. During the lockdown, several on-demand movie streaming platforms noticed a surge in new users. Some platforms have kept up with the pace even after the lockdown was lifted. In this study, I'll look at how OTT platforms grew in popularity during the epidemic. This study will be carried out with the assistance of interviewers from various viewers. It's evident that since their introduction, OTT platforms have only grown in popularity and usage. People's consumption patterns have changed as a result of the pandemic, resulting in a major surge in their popularity. The aim of this study is to look into the growth of OTT services during the epidemic. To understand the future potential of OTT platforms, it is necessary to understand the level to which their popularity grew during the pandemic. True, all such OTT platforms have only grown in popularity and usage since their launch, but the pandemic has resulted in a significant boost in their popularity due to the shift in people's consumption patterns. This study conducted a survey and interviewed three people to assess their views on OTT platforms, consumption patterns, and comparisons to cinema to evaluate if OTT platforms were gradually displacing the most popular traditional entertainment medium. People used OTT more than any other platform, according to research. The majority of them had noticed a rise in the amount of hours they spent on OTT services and were anticipating movies being launched on OTT at the same time as they were in theatres. People were also content to see films on OTT rather than in the theatre. However, for some, it was determined by the film. This study revealed that OTT platforms have a lot of room to grow.

This thesis has for its main goal to help fill the gap of theoretical and empirical research originating from Portuguese-speaking countries concerning the apparent clash between the rights of Internet users and the enforcement of intellectual property laws. By way of an interdisciplinary lens gathering contributions from communication science, sociology, economics and law, it intends to shed light on the new role of users of cultural works as distributors – a role amplified by informal platforms parallel to formal distribution circuits. The first part, of a theoretical nature, starts with a historical genealogy of concepts such as piracy, copyright, droit d’auteur and intellectual property, followed by a presentation of the technological and commercial evolution of file sharing over the past decade and a half. Next comes an overview of the most relevant literature on the relationship between sales and unauthorized copies of information goods, as well as a synthesis of the main results of hundreds of quantitative studies covering the behaviors of filesharers and their motives for downloading copyrighted works. Finally, this part ends with a comparative analysis of a set of statistical indicators regarding the penetration levels of ICTs in Portugal and Brazil as well as on the most popular online activities of Internet users in both countries. The second part comprises an empirical analysis of the behaviors and perceptions of Portuguese and Brazilian users of peer-to-peer (P2P) networks and sites enabling the unauthorized copying of copyrighted works. The analysis will be based on the answers of 301 individuals of both nationalities to an online survey, as well as on the subsequent statements made by 16 of these respondents in the context of a series of online interviews. With this research, it is my aim to show that, rather than being only a market failure, sharing is instead a fundamental dimension of culture (Aigrain 2011) Seen in this light, the constraints of an economic perspective exclusively aimed at measuring any possible losses become evident.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis chapter examines the discourses found in Japanese gay vlog entries to see how such streaming contents are used as sites of contact between gays and straights in Japan. Early internet sites created safe public spaces for sexual minority members to meet and socialize where straights previously seldom had access or were expressly unwelcome. Using a collection of coming out and Q and A videos, the chapter will also explore the use of vlogging discourse for social change in Japan. More recently, sites like YouTube have created new contact spaces where straights are welcomed and can interact with gay content creators more directly. This chapter analyzes the ways in which Japanese gay men construct themselves as well as other gay and straight people around them in these videos. Utilizing membership categorization and indexicality the analysis will show how notions of family and gayness along with associated bound predicates are used to discursively resist heteronormativity. The discourse also shows how these videos focus on the purposes of informing and educating over phatic communication. The analysis will also demonstrate how the concept of internationalization has become semiotically relevant to the gay Japanese male category, constructing an image of masculine interculturality, contrasted against overly feminine mass-mediated stereotypes. Possibilities for further change and social justice in Japan through such sites of contact will also be discussed.

Cloud computing is modus operandi of manipulating server clusters hosted at secluded sites on Internet for storage, processing, and retrieval of data. It tenders suppleness, disaster recovery, competitiveness, and cutback in capital and operational cost for ventures, principally small and medium ones, which hold meager resource base. Virtualization at plinth of cloud computing sanctions utilizing physical hardware stratum to frame and administer virtualized infrastructure, storage areas, and network interfaces. Virtual machines, administered on clouds to seize inherent advantages of virtualization, are fabricated on storage area networks (Armbrust et al., 2009). But whenever user endeavors to access them from remote location it resulted in hundreds of megabytes of data reads and ensuing congestion in network. Question is how to instigate virtual machines and load their applications in minimal time. The ingenious Ceaseless Virtual Appliance Streaming system assures virtual machine's streaming just like video on demand. It trims down burden over existing resources and offers improved network utilization.

Real-time data from social network sites like Twitter or Facebook has been a popular source for analytics and researchers in the recent years due to various factors like large amount of data, structured-ness, and popularity. Analyzing data is a very common requirement today, but such requirements become difficult when there is a bulk of data which needs to processed and analyzed in real time. Analyzing large number of tweets from Twitter to get different patterns and extract useful information is a massive challenge. Apache Spark is a platform that can be used to handle big data efficiently, and it offers faster solutions compared to Hadoop. This chapter addresses the issue of real-time analyzing and filtering the tweets as per the user's requirements from among the millions of other streaming tweets and classifies them into various categories. It creates an interactive automatic system that splits data based on important keywords and displays a graphical representation of connected tweets using Apache Spark.

Virtual tours using drones enhance the experience the users perceive from a place with cultural interest. Drones equipped with 360o cameras perform real-time video streaming of the cultural sites. The user preferences about each monument type should be considered in order to decide the appropriate flying route for the drone. This article describes a scheme for supporting personalized real-time virtual tours at sites with cultural interest using drones. The user preferences are modeled using the MPEG-21 and the MPEG-7 standards, while Web Ontology Language (OWL) ontologies are used for metadata structure and semantics. The Metadata-Aware Analytic Network Process (MANP) algorithm is proposed in order to weigh the user preferences for each monument type. Subsequently, the Trapezoidal Fuzzy Topsis for Heritage Route Selection (TFT-HRS) algorithm ranks the candidate heritage routes. Finally, after each virtual tour, the user preferences metadata are updated in order in order the scheme to continuously learn about the user preferences.

In intellectual collaborative works with participants between remote sites via WAN, CSCW have been used as general communication tools. Especially, the sharing of various, high-quality digital contents such as various materials, computer graphics or visualization contents, and video streaming by between remote places is important to recognize or analyze to easily refer to these contents. However, the image magnification by general projector and large-sized display equipment is low-resolution, and sufficient quality of contents is not obtained. In this research, the author has constructed a tele-immersive collaborative environment with a tiled display wall. In this environment, the author has implemented an application to display high-resolution real video streaming on a tiled display wall in remote place. By using the application, the author displayed the clear video image of remote place over a wide range. Then, the author conducted experimental verification on the effect for eye-to-eye contact by changing the position of camera on frame of LCDs on tiled display wall, and has collected a lot of knowledge. Moreover, the author has tried realistic display processing of high-resolution astronomical observation image and movie data, and it has enabled observation of the entire image of observation data all over tiled display wall.

Choosing whatever form of content or multimedia to consume next depending on interests and preferences is a conundrum while consuming this content. Nowadays, all online streaming sites utilize multimedia recommender systems. These are utilized to anticipate the following collection of multimedia that users can enjoy based on their prior usage patterns. By identifying the points of commonality between the user and the goods, preexisting models can forecast this utilizing the collaborative field. By treating this as a sequence prediction problem, the proposed model in this chapter increases the predicted accuracy using collaborative filtering (CF), ripple nets, deep learning, and recurrent neural networks (RNNs).

The Internet plays an important role in private and professional life. The so- called "streaming" has appeared in the entertainment sector in recent years, which brings numerous advantages, especially for users. Namely, films and series no longer have to be watched only on television. The Internet offers numerous portals that allow users to watch movies and series wherever and whenever they want. However, streaming creates a number of problems for authors, as there are many streaming portals that offer film and music works online without their consent. There is no doubt that the operators of such sites are infringing copyright. But what about users who just watch these illegal movies and series? The answer to this question was given by the Court of Justice of the EU in case C-527/15. In its ruling, the court pointed out that the streaming of films offered on the Internet without the consent of the copyright holder is not covered by the restriction on temporary reproductions, provided that the users knew that the work was made available on the Internet without authorization or this was clearly recognizable to them. This interpretation of copyright restrictions on temporary reproductions favors copyright holders. On the other hand, the requirement of "obviousness" partially protects the interests of users so that they do not have to fear potential copyright infringements every time they watch a movie on the Internet.

We report on an experimental study conducted to study the streaming velocity fields in the vicinity of the stack in a thermoacoustic device. Synchronized Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was used to measure the two-dimensional streaming velocity fields. The streaming velocity fields were measured at both sides of the porous stack over a range of pressure amplitudes (drive ratios). The results show that the streaming flow structure is significantly different on hot and cold sides of the stack. The hot side of the stack experienced higher magnitudes and higher spatial variability of the streaming velocities compared to the cold side. The difference in the velocity magnitude between the hot and cold sides of the stack showed a significant increase with an increase in the drive ratio.

On July 21, 1997, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) published the final rule on Radiological Criteria for License Termination (the License Termination Rule or LTR) as Subpart E to 10 CFR Part 20. NRC regulations require that materials licensees submit Decommissioning Plans to support the decommissioning of its facility if it is required by license condition, or if the procedures and activities necessary to carry out the decommissioning have not been approved by NRC and these procedures could increase the potential health and safety impacts to the workers or the public. NRC regulations also require that reactor licensees submit Post-shutdown Decommissioning Activities Reports and License Termination Plans to support the decommissioning of nuclear power facilities. This paper provides an update on the status of the NRC’s decommissioning program. It discusses the staff’s current efforts to streamline the decommissioning process, current issues being faced in the decommissioning program, such as partial site release and restricted release of sites, as well as the status of the decommissioning of complex sites and those listed in the Site Decommissioning Management Plan. The paper discusses the status of permanently shut-down commercial power reactors and the transfer of complex decommissioning sites and sites listed on the SDMP to Agreement States. Finally the paper provides an update of the status of various tools and guidance the NRC is developing to assist licensees during decommissioning, including an effort to consolidate and risk-inform decommissioning guidance.

Whitaker, Stephen. Rocky intertidal community monitoring at Channel Islands National Park: 2018–19 annual report. National Park Service, sierpień 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2299674.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Channel Islands National Park includes the five northern islands off the coast of southern California (San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, and Santa Barbara Islands) and the surrounding waters out one nautical mile. There are approximately 176 miles of coastline around the islands, about 80% of which is composed of rock. The diversity and undisturbed nature of the tidepools of this rocky coastline were recognized as special features of the islands in the enabling legislation. To conserve these communities unimpaired for future generations, the National Park Service has been monitoring the rocky intertidal communities at the islands since 1982. Sites were established between 1982 and 1998. Site selection considered visitation, accessibility, presence of representative organisms, wildlife disturbance, and safety. This report summarizes the 2018–2019 sampling year efforts (from November 2018 to April 2019) and findings of the Channel Islands National Park Rocky Intertidal Community Monitoring Program. Specific monitoring objectives are 1) to determine the long-term trends in percent cover of key sessile organisms in the rocky intertidal ecosystem, and 2) to determine population dynamics of black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii), owl limpets (Lottia gigantea), and ochre sea stars (Pisaster ochraceus). Objectives were met by monitoring percent cover of core species in target intertidal zones using photoplots and transects, and by measuring size frequency and abundance of black abalone, owl limpets, and sea stars using fixed plots or timed searches. Twelve key species or assemblages, as well as the substrate, tar, have been monitored twice per year at 21 sites on the five park islands as part of the rocky intertidal community monitoring program. Fixed photoplots were used to monitor the percent cover of thatched and acorn barnacles (Tetraclita rubescens, Balanus glandula/Chthamalus spp., respectively), mussels (Mytilus californianus), rockweeds (Silvetia compressa, and Pelvetiopsis californica (formerly Hesperophycus californicus), turfweed (Endocladia muricata), goose barnacles (Pollicipes polymerus) and tar. Point-intercept transects were used to determine the percent cover of surfgrass (Phyllospadix spp.). Information about size distribution (i.e., “size frequency” data) was collected for owl limpets in circular plots. Size distribution and relative abundance of black abalone and ochre sea stars were determined using timed searches. The maximum number of shorebirds and pinnipeds seen at one time were counted at each site. The number of concession boat visitors to the Anacapa tidepools was collected and reported. All sites were monitored in 2018–2019. This was the third year that we officially reduced our sampling interval from twice per year (spring and fall) to once in order to streamline the program and allow for the implementation of additional protocols. Weather conditions during the site visits were satisfactory, but high wind coupled with strong swell and surge limited or prevented the completion of some of the abalone and sea star searches. The percent cover for most key species or assemblages targeted in the photoplots was highly variable among sites. Mussel (Mytilus californianus) cover remained below average at Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands. Record or near record low abundances for Mytilus were measured at Middle West Anacapa (Anacapa Island), Harris Point (San Miguel Island), Prisoner’s Harbor (Santa Cruz Island), and Sea Lion Rookery (Santa Barbara Island) sites. The only site that appeared to have above average Mytilus cover was Scorpion Rock on Santa Cruz Island. All other sites had mussel cover near or below the long-term mean. Qualitatively, Mytilus recruitment appeared low at most sites. Both rockweed species, Silvetia compressa and Pelvetiopsis californica (formerly Hesperophycus californicus), continued to decrease markedly in abundance this year at the majority of sites compared to combined averages for previous years. Fossil Reef and Northwest-Talcott on Santa Rosa Island, Sea Lion Rookery on Santa Barbara Island, and South Frenchy’s Cove on Anacapa Island were the only sites that supported Silvetia cover that was near the long-term mean. No sites exhibited above average cover of rockweed. Extremely high levels of recruitment for Silvetia and Pelvetiopsis were documented at many sites. Most sites exhibited marked declines in S. compressa abundances beginning in the early 2000s, with little recovery observed for the rockweed through this year. Barnacle (Chthamalus/Balanus spp.) cover fell below the long-term means at all islands except Anacapa, where barnacle cover was slightly above average. Endocladia muricata abundances remained comparable to the grand mean calculated for previous years at Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa Islands, while cover of the alga decreased slightly below the long-term means at Anacapa and San Miguel Islands. Black abalone (Haliotis cracherodii) abundances at the islands remain less than one percent of 1985 population levels. Zero abalone were found throughout the entire site at Landing Cove on Santa Barbara Island and South Frenchy’s Cove on Anacapa Island. Above average abundances relative to the long-term mean generated from post-1995 data were observed at all but five sites. Juvenile black abalone were seen at all islands except Santa Barbara. Ochre sea star (Pisaster ochraceus) populations crashed in 2014 at all monitoring sites due to Sea Star Wasting Syndrome, an illness characterized by a suite of symptoms that generally result in death. The mortality event was widely considered to be the largest mortality event for marine diseases ever seen. Beginning in June 2013, the disease swiftly and significantly impacted P. ochraceus (among other species of sea stars) populations along the North American Pacific coast from Alaska to Baja California, Mexico. By the beginning of 2014, P. ochraceus abundances had declined by >95% at nearly all Channel Islands long-term intertidal monitoring sites, in addition to numerous other locations along the West Coast. At various times during the past decade, extremely high abundances (~ 500 P. ochraceus) have been observed at multiple sites, and most locations have supported >100 sea stars counted during 30-minute site-wide searches. This year, abundances ranged 0–13 individuals per site with all but one site having fewer than 10 P. ochraceus seen during routine searches. Insufficient numbers of sea stars were seen to accurately estimate the size structure of P. ochraceus populations. Only two juveniles (i.e., <50 mm) were observed at all sites combined. Giant owl limpet densities in 2018–2019 were comparable or slightly above the long-term mean at seven sites. Exceptionally high densities were measured at Northwest-Talcott on Santa Rosa Island, Otter Harbor on San Miguel Island, and Willows Anchorage on Santa Cruz Island. The sizes of L. gigantea this year varied among sites and islands. The smallest L. gigantea were observed at Otter Harbor followed closely by Willows Anchorage and Anacapa Middle West, and the largest were seen at Northwest-Talcott. Temporally, the mean sizes of L. gigantea in 2018–2019 decreased below the long-term mean at each island except Anacapa. Surfgrasses (Phyllospadix spp.) are typically monitored biannually at two sites each on Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Islands. Beginning in 2015, all transects at each of the monitoring sites were only sampled once per year. At East Point on Santa Rosa Island, the conditions were not conducive to sampling the surfgrass transects, but qualitatively, percent cover of surfgrass appeared to be near 100% on all three transects. Relative to past years, cover of surfgrass increased above the long-term mean at Fraser Cove on Santa Cruz Island, fell slightly below the mean at Trailer on Santa Cruz Island, and remained approximately equivalent to the mean at the two Santa Rosa Island sites. Overall, the abundance and diversity of shorebirds in 2018–2019 at all sites appeared similar to observations made in recent years, with the exception of elevated numbers of brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) observed at East Point on Santa Rosa Island. Black oystercatchers (Haematopus bachmani) were the most ubiquitous shorebird seen at all sites. Black turnstones (Arenaria melanocephala) were not common relative to past years. Pinniped abundances remained comparable in 2018–2019 to historical counts for all three species that are commonly seen at the islands. Harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) were seen in the vicinity of eight sites this year. As in past years, harbor seals were most abundant at Otter Harbor and Harris Point on San Miguel Island. Elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris) were seen at six sites during the year, where abundances ranged 1–5 individuals per location. California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were common at Santa Barbara Island; 117 individuals were observed at Sea Lion Rookery. Sea lion abundances were higher than usual at Harris Point (N = 160) and Otter Harbor (N = 82) on San Miguel Island. Relative to past years, abundances this year were considered average at other locations.
