Linnaeus University is aiming at implementing a Data Stream Centre to provide streaming of accumulated data from the websites’ newspapers and articles in order to help its scientists of University to have faster and easier access to the mentioned data. This mentioned project consists of multiple parts and the part we are responsible to research about is first nominating some text streaming protocols based on the criteria that are important for Linnaeus University and then evaluating them. Those protocols are responsible to transfer text stream from the robots (that read articles from the websites) to the data stream center and from them to the scientists. Some KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are defined and the protocols are evaluated based on those KPIs. In this study we address evaluation of network streaming protocol by starting to read about the protocol’s specifications and nominating four protocols including TCP, HTTP1.1, Server-Sent Events and Websocket. Then, fake robot and server are implemented by each protocol to simulate the functionality of real robots, servers and scientists in LNU data stream center project. Later, the evaluation is done in the mentioned simulated environment using RawCAP, Wireshark and Message Analyzer. The results of this study indicated that the best suited protocols for transferring text stream data from robot to data stream center and from data stream center to scientist are TCP and Server-Sent Events, respectively. In the concluding part, other protocols are also suggested in the order of priority.

Temporary streams have received undeservedly little scientific attention and as a result their role in hydrological, biogeochemical and ecological processes is not yet fully understood. The ultimate goal of the research was to gain a better understanding of the temporary stream network and the processes that control it and determine how the active and connected stream length change with catchment wetness conditions to find simple methods to map seasonal and event-based changes in temporary flowing stream networks. Streams, springs and wetlands of four relatively small headwater catchments (11.7 – 25.3 km2) and one wetland in the steep and remote Zwäckentobel catchment in Alptal, canton Schwyz (Switzerland), were mapped and stream segments were classified by flow type during different weather conditions using direct observations. The mapping was performed by an elite orienteer with mapping experience. The variation in streamflow was analysed and related to the catchment wetness and topography using the TWI-values and the upslope accumulated area of the stream segments. As the catchments wetted up in response to fall rainfall events after a dry summer the flowing stream density increased up to five times and the connected stream density increased up to six times with a 150-fold increase in discharge. Also the number of flowing stream heads increased up to ten times. The best description of the pattern of stream expansion is a combination of the variable source area and the element threshold concepts, where surface topography, particularly TWI (Topographic Wetness Index) and upslope accumulated area (A), and local storage areas controls where streamflow is initiated and how flow in different stream segments connects. Streams in the Alptal show a seasonally bottom up or disjointed connection pattern. Mapping the temporary streams in steep and remote watersheds as a function of hydrological conditions is not an easy task. It is however necessary in order to fully understand where water is flowing or not. A combination of field observations with monitoring equipment can facilitate this extensive work by providing a more detailed temporal resolution.

Streszczenie:
Real-time classification of data streams remains one of the most challenging aspects of Big Data. As a data stream is an unending source of information, classification models and metrics must be created and adapted in real-time as the data is made available to them. This time constrained learning is problematic, conventional data models require a training period to examine the data and produce models for evaluation. In data stream mining this training period does not exist, instead the models are continuously updated in real-time. As data streams become faster and larger the quantity of data to be processed can overwhelm a single machines’ learning capabilities. One method to reduce the work load upon a data mining algorithm is to implement parallel solutions. This has the benefit of distributing the classification over one or more machines. Unfortunately, most parallel implementations of classification algorithms are not suitable for real-time processing, and most data stream mining algorithms are not suitable for parallelisation. This research develops on real-time parallel classification of data instances with respect to vast amounts of data. The proposed solution is vastly scalable as it incurs no additional communications costs when training. Moreover, it is capable of accepting data streams that contain multiple sources. The newly created algorithm Parallel MC-NN has been implemented and evaluated on open source parallel technologies. The results of experimentation show a scalable solution that has been evaluated and peer reviewed via multiple publications.

Streszczenie:
A lot of today's data is generated incrementally over time by a large variety of producers. This data ranges from quantitative sensor observations produced by robot systems to complex unstructured human-generated texts on social media. With data being so abundant, making sense of these streams of data through reasoning is challenging. Reasoning over streams is particularly relevant for autonomous robotic systems that operate in a physical environment. They commonly observe this environment through incremental observations, gradually refining information about their surroundings. This makes robust management of streaming data and its refinement an important problem. Many contemporary approaches to stream reasoning focus on the issue of querying data streams in order to generate higher-level information by relying on well-known database approaches. Other approaches apply logic-based reasoning techniques, which rarely consider the provenance of their symbolic interpretations. In this thesis, we integrate techniques for logic-based spatio-temporal stream reasoning with the adaptive generation of the state streams needed to do the reasoning over. This combination deals with both the challenge of reasoning over streaming data and the problem of robustly managing streaming data and its refinement. The main contributions of this thesis are (1) a logic-based spatio-temporal reasoning technique that combines temporal reasoning with qualitative spatial reasoning; (2) an adaptive reconfiguration procedure for generating and maintaining a data stream required to perform spatio-temporal stream reasoning over; and (3) integration of these two techniques into a stream reasoning framework. The proposed spatio-temporal stream reasoning technique is able to reason with intertemporal spatial relations by leveraging landmarks. Adaptive state stream generation allows the framework to adapt in situations in which the set of available streaming resources changes. Management of streaming resources is formalised in the DyKnow model, which introduces a configuration life-cycle to adaptively generate state streams. The DyKnow-ROS stream reasoning framework is a concrete realisation of this model that extends the Robot Operating System (ROS). DyKnow-ROS has been deployed on the SoftBank Robotics NAO platform to demonstrate the system's capabilities in the context of a case study on run-time adaptive reconfiguration. The results show that the proposed system – by combining reasoning over and reasoning about streams – can robustly perform spatio-temporal stream reasoning, even when the availability of streaming resources changes.

Résumé en français non fourni par l'auteur
There is a paradigm shift in the nature and processing means of today’s data: data are used to being mostly static and stored in large databases to be queried. Today, with the advent of new applications and means of collecting data, most applications on the Web and in enterprises produce data in a continuous manner under the form of streams. Thus, the users of these applications expect to process a large volume of data with fresh low latency results. This has resulted in the introduction of Data Stream Processing Systems (DSMSs) and a Complex Event Processing (CEP) paradigm – both with distinctive aims: DSMSs are mostly employed to process traditional query operators (mostly stateless), while CEP systems focus on temporal pattern matching (stateful operators) to detect changes in the data that can be thought of as events. In the past decade or so, a number of scalable and performance intensive DSMSs and CEP systems have been proposed. Most of them, however, are based on the relational data models – which begs the question for the support of heterogeneous data sources, i.e., variety of the data. Work in RDF stream processing (RSP) systems partly addresses the challenge of variety by promoting the RDF data model. Nonetheless, challenges like volume and velocity are overlooked by existing approaches. These challenges require customised optimisations which consider RDF as a first class citizen and scale the processof continuous graph pattern matching. To gain insights into these problems, this thesis focuses on developing scalable RDF graph stream processing, and semantically-enabled CEP systems (i.e., Semantic Complex Event Processing, SCEP). In addition to our optimised algorithmic and data structure methodologies, we also contribute to the design of a new query language for SCEP. Our contributions in these two fields are as follows: • RDF Graph Stream Processing. We first propose an RDF graph stream model, where each data item/event within streams is comprised of an RDF graph (a set of RDF triples). Second, we implement customised indexing techniques and data structures to continuously process RDF graph streams in an incremental manner. • Semantic Complex Event Processing. We extend the idea of RDF graph stream processing to enable SCEP over such RDF graph streams, i.e., temporalpattern matching. Our first contribution in this context is to provide a new querylanguage that encompasses the RDF graph stream model and employs a set of expressive temporal operators such as sequencing, kleene-+, negation, optional, conjunction, disjunction and event selection strategies. Based on this, we implement a scalable system that employs a non-deterministic finite automata model to evaluate these operators in an optimised manner. We leverage techniques from diverse fields, such as relational query optimisations, incremental query processing, sensor and social networks in order to solve real-world problems. We have applied our proposed techniques to a wide range of real-world and synthetic datasets to extract the knowledge from RDF structured data in motion. Our experimental evaluations confirm our theoretical insights, and demonstrate the viability of our proposed methods

This dissertation increases our understanding of the drivers that shape and maintain grassland streams and their watersheds by examining the influence of grazing management practices on suspended sediment concentrations, bare ground production, and changes to channel geomorphology. Chapter 2 demonstrates that cattle grazing produces significantly higher baseflow suspended sediment concentrations relative to bison grazing. Suspended sediment concentrations within bison-grazed streams are similar to ungrazed streams, indicating that the substitution of cattle for bison has resulted in degradation of baseflow water quality in grassland streams. Burning frequency, discharge, and seasonality are also significant drivers of suspended sediment concentrations, but are generally less influential than grazing treatments. Chapter 3 indicates that high density cattle grazing treatments produce more bare ground within the riparian zones of grassland stream networks, particularly underneath tree canopy cover. The increased bare ground coverage within riparian areas is correlated with increased suspended sediment concentrations during baseflow conditions, while watershed-scale bare ground production is correlated with increased suspended sediment concentrations during storm flow events. Chapter 4 demonstrates channel geometry and sedimentology are significantly influenced by grazing treatments. This dissertation is the first study to comparatively evaluate the relative influence between cattle and bison grazing on stream geomorphology within any environment. Insight gained from this project can be used by public and private land use managers to improve the environmental integrity of native grassland ecosystems.

Streszczenie:
The productivity or availability of juvenile habitats have theoretically been shown to determine size distributions of adult individuals and population abundance. Brown trout (Salmo trutta) is a species where adults may inhabit lakes and use connected streams for spawning and as nursery habitats for juveniles. This project aimed to estimate what factors determine the density and growth of juvenile brown trout in mountain streams. This was done by sampling 21 mountain streams for juvenile brown trout densities and growth, habitat availability and stream size, productivity, and resource availability. Additional data were obtained from other mountain streams from the Swedish Electrofishing Register. My results showed that measures of stream productivity and estimated benthic resource availability did not affect the densities and biomass of older juvenile brown trout. Instead, higher densities of older juvenile brown trout were related to increasing stream size (stream width x water depth). This is likely due to interference competition for space, where territory size influences the growth and densities of brown trout in streams but also that larger streams can provide refuges for larger individuals during periods of drying and thermal stress. This indicates that my estimate of stream size is an important factor determining densities of older juvenile brown trout in low-productive mountain streams. Stream size can be suggested to be a used as proxy for density and production of larger juvenile brown trout and therefore it may also be used to predict adult lake-living brown trout population size structure and abundance.

Despite its popularity in the scientific literature, stream learning has yet to substantiate its practical utility in industrial applications. Characterized by the incessant influx of high-velocity, voluminous, and dynamically changing data, online marketing seems to be the favorite candidate for stream learning to make its entry into the industry. In this context, state-of-theart stream learning is of little utility, as it mainly focuses on classification, while bipartite ranking constitutes better modeling of the problem of online marketing. Recently, the combination of stream learning and AutoML, i.e., Stream-AutoML, has been drawing more attention from the scientific community. This work investigates the applicability of Stream-AutoML to bipartite ranking problems when data is imbalanced. We commence by developing a framework to execute and evaluate Stream-AutoML pipelines of stream learning models. Then we propose a framework for computing AUC-ROC incrementally, as well as introducing exponential decay to serve as a forgetting mechanism. We also propose a framework for concept drift detection using AUC-ROC, for which we develop six statistical tests for differences in AUC-ROC with theoretical bounds of type I and type II errors. Finally, we propose four data generators that enrich the tool kit to evaluate concept drift detectors under controlled environments. Results have shown that the proposed methods reduce the resources allocated for evaluation considerably and detect concept drifts with very small false positives. These contributions prepare the field for Stream-AutoML to solve bipartite ranking problems, which can be then exploited in online marketing applications. Optimized implementations of the proposed methods were developed and have already been adopted in the online marketing product of IDAaaS

The Usage of division to combine the plain text with stream key gives numerous abilities to this method that the most important one is using random factors to produce the ciphers.

Streszczenie:
We identify and analyse the typically higher-order approaches to stream processing in the literature. From this analysis we motivate an alternative approach to the specification of SPSs as STs based on an essentially first-order equational representation. This technique is called Cartesian form specification. More specifically, while STs are properly second-order objects we show that using Cartesian forms, the second-order models needed to formalise STs are so weak that we may use and develop well-understood first-order methods from computability theory and mathematical logic to reason about their properties. Indeed, we show that by specifying STs equationally in Cartesian form as primitive recursive functions we have the basis of a new, general purpose and mathematically sound theory of stream processing that emphasises the formal specification and formal verification of STs. The main topics that we address in the development of this theory are as follows. We present a theoretically well-founded general purpose stream processing language ASTRAL (Algebraic Stream TRAnsformer Language) that supports the use of modular specification techniques for full second-order STs. We show how ASTRAL specifications can be given a Cartesian form semantics using the language PREQ that is an equational characterisation of the primitive recursive functions. In more detail, we show that by compiling ASTRAL specifications into an equivalent Cartesian form in PREQ we can use first-order equational logic with induction as a logical calculus to reason about STs. In particular, using this calculus we identify a syntactic class of correctness statements for which the verification of ASTRAL programmes is decidable relative to this calculus. We define an effective algorithm based on term re-writing techniques to implement this calculus and hence to automatically verify a very broad class of STs including conventional hardware devices. Finally, we analyse the properties of this abstract algorithm as a proof assistant and discuss various techniques that have been adopted to develop software tools based on this algorithm.

Streszczenie:
Advances in hardware, software and communication networks have enabled applications to generate data at unprecedented volume and velocity. An important type of this data are event streams generated from financial transactions, health sensors, web logs, social media, mobile devices, and vehicles. The world is thus poised for a sea-change in time-critical applications from financial fraud detection to health care analytics empowered by inferring insights from event streams in real time. Event processing systems continuously evaluate massive workloads of Kleene queries to detect and aggregate event trends of interest. Examples of these trends include check kites in financial fraud detection, irregular heartbeat in health care analytics, and vehicle trajectories in traffic control. These trends can be of any length. Worst yet, their number may grow exponentially in the number of events. State-of-the-art systems do not offer practical solutions for trend analytics and thus suffer from long delays and high memory costs. In this dissertation, we propose the following event trend detection and aggregation techniques. First, we solve the trade-off between CPU processing time and memory usage while computing event trends over high-rate event streams. Namely, our event trend detection approach guarantees minimal CPU processing time given limited memory. Second, we compute online event trend aggregation at multiple granularity levels from fine (per matched event), to medium (per event type), to coarse (per pattern). Thus, we minimize the number of aggregates – reducing both time and space complexity compared to the state-of-the-art approaches. Third, we share intermediate aggregates among multiple event sequence queries while avoiding the expensive construction of matched event sequences. In several comprehensive experimental studies, we demonstrate the superiority of the proposed strategies over the state-of-the-art techniques with respect to latency, throughput, and memory costs.

Streszczenie:

Stream temperature (ST) is a primary determinant of individual stream species distributions and community composition. Moreover, thermal modifications associated with urbanization, agriculture, reservoirs, and climate change can significantly alter stream ecosystem structure and function. Despite its importance, we lack ST measurements for the vast majority of USA streams. To effectively manage these important systems, we need to understand how STs vary geographically, what the natural (reference) thermal condition of altered streams was, and how STs will respond to climate change. Empirical ST models, if calibrated with physically meaningful predictors, could provide this information. My dissertation objectives were to: (1) develop empirical models that predict reference- and nonreference-condition STs for the conterminous USA, (2) assess how well modeled STs represent measured STs for predicting stream biotic communities, and (3) predict potential climate-related alterations to STs. For objective 1, I used random forest modeling with environmental data from several thousand US Geological Survey sites to model geographic variation in nonreference mean summer, mean winter, and mean annual STs. I used these models to identify thresholds of watershed alteration below which there were negligible effects on ST. With these reference-condition sites, I then built ST models to predict summer, winter, and annual STs that should occur in the absence of human-related alteration (r2 = 0.87, 0.89, 0.95, respectively). To meet objective 2, I compared how well modeled and measured ST predicted stream benthic invertebrate composition across 92 streams. I also compared predicted and measured STs for estimating taxon-specific thermal optima. Modeled and measured STs performed equally well in both predicting invertebrate composition and estimating taxon-specific thermal optima (r2 between observation and model-derived optima = 0.97). For objective 3, I first showed that predicted and measured ST responded similarly to historical variation in air temperatures. I then used downscaled climate projections to predict that summer, winter, and annual STs will warm by 1.6 °C - 1.7 °C on average by 2099. Finally, I used additional modeling to identify initial stream and watershed conditions (i.e., low heat loss rates and small base-flow index) most strongly associated with ST vulnerability to climate change.

Streszczenie:
Vane-type in-stream structures and step pool storm conveyance (SPSC) are more ecologically friendly alternatives to traditional stream channel stabilization and stormwater conveyance techniques. Vane-type structures have been widely accepted as elements of stream restoration projects and are regularly implemented in streams throughout the United States. However, these structures commonly experience partial or total failures of function or stability, often due either to improper installation or misapplication. This study undertook a thorough review of the available design guidance for the single-arm vane, j-hook vane, cross vane, and w-weir, which revealed that the existing guidance is composed of non-standardized recommendations largely based on practitioner experience and rules of thumb. Existing guidance was synthesized with current structure research and practitioner surveys to create factsheets for each of the four structures and the SPSC, with the intent of improving structure application and offering concise general guidance. This study also endeavored to improve the design of the SPSC by determining the most accurate of several common prediction methods for Manning's roughness coefficient n, used in SPSC design velocity calculations. This was done by using Rhodamine WT dye tracer experiments to determine n values during storm flows in two SPSC structures in Annapolis, MD, which were then compared to predicted n values. Values of Manning's n determined in the SPSCs at low flows (0.28-12) often exceeded the predicted n values (-0.17-3.9) by several orders of magnitude. Though the applicability of these results is limited, an increase in design n to 0.1-0.2 is still recommended.

Vane-type in-stream structures are stone or wood structures installed within a stream channel for purposes such as streambank stabilization or aquatic habitat creation. Step pool storm conveyance (SPSC) is a technique which converts an existing steep stream or gully into a step-pool channel. Both of these techniques are more ecologically friendly than many traditional stream channel stabilization or stormwater conveyance techniques such as riprap or concrete storm drains. Vane-type structures in particular have been widely accepted as elements of stream restoration projects and are regularly implemented in streams throughout the United States. However, these structures commonly experience partial or total failures, either through structural collapse or failure to function properly. This is often either because they were improperly installed or because they were installed at a stream site where they were inappropriate or unnecessary. A review of the available guidance for the design of these structures revealed that the existing guidance is composed of non-standardized and sometimes contradictory recommendations which are largely based on designer trial and error and rules of thumb, rather than on the results of scientific experiments or modeling. The goal of this study was to improve the success of vane-type in-stream structures and the SPSC by providing factsheets offering clear and concise general design guidelines and sound recommendations for structure application. Flow studies of two SPSC structures in Annapolis, MD were also conducted to improve the design of that structure by measuring its flow characteristics in the field.

Streszczenie:
The interaction of agricultural fertilizer application and a drought-to-flood transition in 2012-2013 set up conditions for a watershed-scale experiment on nutrient dynamics. The region-wide drought in 2012 left surface soils disconnected from stream networks and restricted nutrient use by crops, resulting in an unusually large nitrogen pool stored in the soil column through the winter. The wet conditions in the Midwest in spring of 2013 mobilized the unused fertilizer from the landscape into the stream network. A six-week period of extremely high in-stream nutrient concentrations followed. This study analyzes results of three synoptic sampling campaigns in the Iowa-Cedar River Basin in 2013 to quantify patterns in nitrogen dynamics. I estimate nutrient spiraling metrics by interpreting the fertilizer mobilization from the landscape to the stream as a constant rate nutrient addition at the scale of the entire watershed—a vital scale on which to understand these processes, but for which costs and logistics of standard experiments are prohibitive. Results of this study compare patterns in dilution and uptake across spatial and temporal scales, and bound feasible explanations for hydrologic and reactive function in each reach of the network.

This thesis analyzes the Visegrad Group&rsquo
s stance toward the Russian-German Nord Stream and Russian-Italian South Stream gas pipeline projects, which aimed to circumvent the traditional energy routes situated in Central Europe and Eastern Europe. The level of the Visegrad Group&rsquo
s dependency on inherited Soviet gas pipeline routes is examined alongside the Visegrad Group&rsquo
s policy setting ability within the group itself and in the European Union. The thesis also traces the evolution of energy relations between Europe and Russia and Visegrad Group&rsquo
s adaptation to the new state of affairs after the collapse of the Soviet Union, particularly with respect to energy issues. It is argued that despite all differences, Visegrad Group members are able to set a cooperation platform at times of crisis and develop common energy strategies. However, the thesis shows that the Visegrad Group&rsquo
s endeavor has encountered some setbacks at the national level and serious challenges at the European level, largely owing to the lack of a common European energy policy. The thesis concludes that the Visegrad Group&rsquo
s energy policy is both dependent on the stances of Russia and larger EU actors.

One of Company X's many services is to refurbish systems at regular intervals during their use. Quick turnaround times are of the utmost importance both to keep Company X's costs low and to ensure the systems are returned to perform their services in the field as rapidly as possible. This research had two distinct elements in service to accelerated turnaround times: 1) Improving inventory management practices to align with the need for replacements for failed parts to reduce cycle times, and 2) Diagnosing the reasons for and developing mitigations against failures in the blind mating of two connectors. Regarding the first element of the research performed, Company X hypothesized that improving the inventory management system would yield shorter cycle times. In order to test this hypothesis, part failure and inventory histories needed to be compared to confirm if parts were not in stock at the time of failure. A model was developed to analyze both of these history files but the poor quality of the data precluded accurate conclusions from being drawn. Once the data input methods have controls placed on them, the model will serve to accurately represent the failure rates and types of failures of all parts, allowing for proper stocking of inventory needed to service these failures. An investigation of process failure rates and their impact on cycle time was also conducted. This analysis included quantifying how many times each operation was performed, at which steps failures occurred or were noticed most, and how much time was required to complete each operation and service each failure. This analysis ultimately yielded the generation of a diagnostic tool with a flexibility that allowed simultaneous analysis to be performed on over 1,100 operations. One of the key insights generated by using this tool was that the majority of failures are found at late-stage inspections, highlighting that improving the thoroughness of early-stage inspections could prevent the necessity of substantial rework to remedy the issues found late in the process. With respect to the second element of the research performed, an understanding of why and how connectors were failing was sought out. Through observing the process and analyzing the historical data detailing the connector's failure modes, multiple explanations for the failures and related solutions resulted. The first failure mode was loose connections, for which a tool was shortened to increase the operator's ease of accessing the connector to properly apply torque and secure the connection. The other modes of failure were caused due to connector misalignment, for which a bracket was redesigned as an auto-alignment feature to aid in the mating process, and operator deviations from the work instructions were addressed as they pertained to connector failures. The combination of these actions are expected to yield an annual savings of $100,000, net of costs.

Streszczenie:
Through distributed stream network routing, it has quantitatively been shown that the relationship between flow travel time and discharge varies strongly nonlinearly with stream stage and with catchment-specific properties. Physically derived distributions of water travel times through a stream network were successfully used to parameterise the streamflow response function of a compartmental hydrological model. Predictions were found to improve compared to conventional statistically based parameterisation schemes, for most of the modelled scenarios, particularly for peakflow conditions. A Fourier spectral analysis of 55-110 years of daily discharge time series from 79 unregulated catchments in Sweden revealed that the discharge power spectral slope has gradually increased over time, with significant increases for 58 catchments. The results indicated that the catchment scaling function power spectrum had steepened in most of the catchments for which historical precipitation series were available. These results suggest that (local) land-use changes within the catchments may affect the discharge power spectra more significantly than changes in precipitation (climate change). A case study from an agriculturally intense catchment using historical (from the 1880s) and modern stream network maps revealed that the average stream network flow distance as well as average water levels were substantially diminished over the past century, while average bottom slopes increased. The study verifies the hypothesis that anthropogenic changes (determined through scenario modelling using a 1D distributed routing model) of stream network properties can have a substantial influence on the travel times through the stream networks and thus on the discharge hydrographs. The findings stress the need for a more hydrodynamically based approach to adequately describe the variation of streamflow response, especially for predictions of higher discharges. An increased physical basis of response functions can be beneficial in improving discharge predictions during conditions in which conventional parameterisation based on historical flow patterns may not be possible - for example, for extreme peak flows and during periods of nonstationary conditions, such as during periods of climate and/or land use change.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Ice streams are the dominant drainage pathways of contemporary ice sheets and their location and behaviour are viewed as key controls on ice sheet stability. Identifying palaeo-ice streams is of paramount importance if we are to produce accurate reconstructions of former ice sheets and examine their critical role in the oceanclimate system. Many workers have invoked palaeo-ice streams from a variety of former ice sheets, despite a limited understanding of their glacial geomorphology. This thesis addresses the problem by predicting several diagnostic geomorphological criteria indicative of ice stream activity. These are developed objectively from the known characteristics of contemporary ice streams and can be summarised as: large flow-set dimensions (>20 km wide and >150 km long), highly convergent flow patterns, highly attenuated subglacial bedforms (length:width >10: 1), Boothia-type dispersal plumes, abrupt lateral margins «2 km), ice stream marginal moraines, evidence of pervasively deformed till, and submarine sediment accumulations (marine-terminating ice streams only). Collectively, the criteria are used to construct conceptual landsystems of palaeo-ice stream tracks. Using satellite imagery and aerial photography to map glacial geomorphology, identification of the criteria is used to validate the location of a previously hypothesised ice stream and identify a hitherto undetected palaeo-ice stream from the former Laurentide Ice Sheet. Implications for ice stream basal processes are explored and their ice sheet-wide significance is assessed. On Victoria Island (Arctic Canada) five of the geomorphological criteria are identified and the extent of the marine-based M'Clintock Channel Ice Stream is reconstructed at 720 km in length and 140 km in width. The ice stream (operating between 10,400 and 10,000 yr BP) was located within a broad topographic trough, but internal glaciological processes, rather than properties of the bed controlled the margin locations. It eroded into pre-existing unconsolidated sediments and left a spectacular pattern of subglacially-produced landforms, recording a snapshot view of the bed prior to ice stream shut-down. Sediment availability appears critical to its functioning (deformable bed?) and the debris flux of the ice stream is inferred to have been high. Frictional shut-down occurred once down-cutting through sediments reached hard bedrock close to the terminus. The presence of four of the geomorphological criteria are used to identify a terrestrial ice stream which drained the Keewatin Sector of the Laurentide Ice Sheet between ca. 10,000 and 8,500 yr BP. Its size is reconstructed at over 450 km in length and 140 km in width, and it left behind a subglacial bedform pattern consisting of highly attenuated drumlins (length:width ratios up to 48: 1) displaying exceptional parallel conformity. This represents an isochronous bedform pattern and variations in lineament elongation ratio are thought to be a useful proxy for ice velocity. Highest elongation ratios occur immediately downstream of a topographic step where the ice stream entered a sedimentary basin. It is inferred that the ice stream was triggered by climatic warming which altered the ice sheet configuration and the thermal state of the bed. A switch from cold to warm-based conditions probably triggered rapid basal sliding. The ice stream (and a tributary) shut down when it ran out of ice, causing widespread thinning of the ice sheet and subsequent deglaciation. These ice streams denote considerable ice sheet instability over both hard and soft (deformable) beds and emphasise the enormous effects that ice streams had in controlling the deglaciation of the Laurentide Ice Sheet.

Streszczenie:
Urbanization, often characterized by high impervious surface area, can result in excessive inputs of fine sediments into urban streams. Excessive fine sediments can blanket the stream bed filling the interstitial space in the substratum, which may have adverse effects on stream biota. A field survey was conducted in Oregon urban and non-urban basins to investigate the relationship between fine sediments and stream macroinvertebrates. Physical, chemical, and biological data were collected from 59 stream sites in two urban and two rural streams. The stream sites fulfilled a continuous sediment gradient, which ranged from a low of 2% of fine sediment in the substrate to a high of 64% with an average of 22%. The % fines, in Clear Creek (rural basin) was significantly lower than in the urban basins (Johnson Creek and Tryon Creek) (p=0.005). Johnson Creek (mean=23%) had approximately three times more fine sediment than Clear Creek (mean=7%), while Tryon Creek (mean=32%) had nearly five times as much fine sediment as Clear Creek. EPT taxa richness was significantly higher in both rural streams than in both urban streams (p0.05). For example, regression analysis of EPT taxa richness vs. % fine sediments displayed a coefficient of determination (r2) value of 0.2. Other macro invertebrates metrics displayed similar patterns. The lack of significant correlations may be due to the cumulative effect of basin-wide "historical land use past". Past land use activity may have resulted in long-term reductions of sensitive taxa in the basin taxa pool and efforts to improve local habitats may not be quickly colonized by pollution sensitive taxa. Long-term degradation to the urban streams resulted in a relatively homogenous assemblage of macro invertebrates, which may have confounded the quantitative relationship between sediments and macroinvertebrates. This study suggests there is a clear difference between urban and non-urban streams in terms of macro invertebrates, which may be likely due to sediments, but the quantitative relationship between fine sediments and macro invertebrates is weak.

Streszczenie:
This PhD thesis seeks to consider conifer forestry stream corridor design in relation to both in-stream and riparian zone biodiversity and functioning. The contribution, availability and source of basal resources within varying corridor conditions are the focus of this project. This approach is combined with surveys of community diversity on a number of key trophic scales in order to determine how the corridor characteristics and their associated resource availability, affects community structure. The effects of varying design and management of the riparian buffer zones within afforested stream systems on in-stream and overall habitat diversity and functioning remains largely unknown. Although guidelines have been implemented for several years (Forest and Water Guidelines, Forestry Commission), recommendations, although based on sound assumptions, are subjective assessments and tend not based on scientific research or data. As such, the premise of this project is to consider a variety of corridor physical parameters adjacent to low-order streams within two afforested catchments in South-West Scotland, between 2003 and 2005, in order to contribute to the understanding of system functioning within the limitations of forestry land-use and management. A number of different approaches were employed in order to define the proportional contributions of allochthonous and autochthonous material within the benthos of the stream systems. This was done in order to define resource availability, biofilm characteristics, stream functioning and the role of corridor design in influencing resource availability. Yet, despite significant autochthonous productivity, allochthonous organic matter was the primary resource utilised by many taxa. However, conversely, light regime was found to be fundamental in shaping production and community structure within these ecosystems. Consequently, here I explore a number of different trophic scale responses to riparian conditions in order to define the biotic responses to variation of resource availability, with the aim of contributing information which may aid in design and management of afforested riparian zones.

Streszczenie:
The health of freshwater aquatic systems, particularly stream networks, is mainly influenced by water temperature, which controls biological processes and influences species distributions and aquatic biodiversity. Thermal regimes of rivers are likely to change in the future, due to climate change and other anthropogenic impacts, and our ability to predict stream temperatures will be critical in understanding distribution shifts of aquatic biota. Spatial statistical network models take into account spatial relationships but have drawbacks, including high computation times and data pre-processing requirements. Machine learning techniques and generalized additive models (GAM) are promising alternatives to the SSN model. Two machine learning methods, gradient boosting machines (GBM) and Random Forests (RF), are computationally efficient and can automatically model complex data structures. However, a study comparing the predictive accuracy among a variety of widely-used statistical modeling techniques has not yet been conducted. My objectives for this study were to 1) compare the accuracy among linear models (LM), SSN, GAM, RF, and GBM in predicting stream temperature over two stream networks and 2) provide guidelines in choosing a prediction method for practitioners and ecologists. Stream temperature prediction accuracies were compared with the test-set root mean square error (RMSE) for all methods. For the actual data, SSN had the highest predictive accuracy overall, which was followed closely by GBM and GAM. LM had the poorest performance overall. This study shows that although SSN appears to be the most accurate method for stream temperature prediction, machine learning methods and GAM may be suitable alternatives.

Streszczenie:
The U.S. Geological Survey started measuring stream flow in 1888 as part of a public land irrigation study. The demand for accurate stream flow measurement has increased with the rising concern about nonpoint source (NPS) pollution. NPS pollution studies, such as TMDL development, often involve quantification of flow in small first and second order streams. This application of technology intended for use in larger streams presents special problems that must be addressed by the user. The goal of this study was to conduct a comparative analysis of the current technologies used to measure flow in small streams with respect to accuracy and cost. The analyses involved field investigations, laboratory experiments, and a cost analysis. The specific study objectives were: 1) Compare the accuracy of various methods for estimating stream discharge in small first and second order streams, 2) Compare the accuracy of various methods for estimating stream discharge in a controlled laboratory environment, and 3) Evaluate the costs associated with installation, operation, and maintenance of each of the systems investigated. Ten stream-gaging methods were evaluated for their field performance, laboratory performance, and costs. Analysis of the field investigation data indicated that the Marsh McBirney current meter and the One-orange method were the most accurate among the methods studied. The results of the laboratory experiments imply that the Starflow acoustic Doppler and Valeport BFM001 current meter performed best among the ten methods. The Starflow acoustic Doppler device also proved to be the most cost-effective method. Overall, the Marsh McBirney and Valeport BFM001 current meters exhibited the best performance for both field and laboratory situations among the methods evaluated.

One such case is Utah’s Upper Sevier River where a loss of woody bank vegetation (reduced shading) and accelerated bank erosion (increased fine sediment inputs) has led to increased stream temperature and water turbidity. As a result, the state of Utah sought to improve water quality conditions using streambank restoration. While commonly recommended and performed, the effectiveness of this sort of restoration has rarely been quantified. Here, I evaluated a restored reach of the Upper Sevier River near Hatch, UT using continuous monitoring data and a historical photo analysis. As Utah wishes to continue performing this type of restoration in additional locations on the Upper Sevier River, I applied a simple sediment budget model to test its value in informing future streambank restoration decisions. Continuous monitoring data at the upstream and downstream extent of restoration showed that both stream temperature and turbidity increased downstream along the restored reach. In addition, I found that stream temperature violated Utah’s cold-water stream threshold at both sites but did not violate thresholds for rainbow trout. Turbidity violated state and biological thresholds at both sites. I was unable to conclude whether the streambank restoration directly altered water quality because I lacked monitoring data before restoration occurred. Results of the historical aerial photo analysis showed that restoration practitioners were successful in reducing cut bank erosion. My use of SIAM as a simple sediment budget model proved insufficient due to poor data quality and quantity. Overall, streambank restoration was successful at reducing cut bank erosion, and I recommended monitoring future restoration before and after project completion, identifying and monitoring upstream sources of fine sediment, and pursuing more comprehensive sediment models to inform future streambank restoration.
