There is an acquisition management challenge to a program which has a limited market. One approach which can improve competition is the utilization of commercial technology. This utilization helps reduce unit cost and system obsolescence. The Hardened Subminiature Telemetry and Sensor System (HSTSS) has experienced the affects of a limited market and the need to utilize commercial technology. HSTSS plans to use partnering because the expertise is spread across the industry, and technology integration is required to fabricate an instrumentation system that would meet tri-service test requirements. There are many challenges facing the Program Manager; which create high program risk when proper acquisition procedures are not followed. HSTSS is this type of project. This paper will essentially discuss the acquisition strategy as it has evolved as well as the technical strategy. These strategies have been influenced by Government acquisition streamlining , available commercial technology and the programs limited production requirements. This is what the Government’s Project Managers are facing in these times of shrinking budgets and downsizing. The importance of the services working together, and sharing funds and technology to accomplish more with less is discussed in this paper. It is essential that government and industry work together as partners to reach the program’s goals. This paper proposes a program strategy based on our experience as to what is needed to incorporate partnering and commercial technology to successfully complete your program.

The Colombian Navy is a modern, disciplined, and well-trained military service performing the constitutional mission to defend the integrity of the Colombian maritime territory and enforce government policies concerning the use of the sea. Today the strategic fleet fulfilling these duties bears normal aging problems threatening the execution of the Colombian Navy's mission in the near future. The country's fiscal situation is tight and no funds are budgeted to support a contract acquiring new ships. The Colombian Navy will need to replace its strategic surface ships in order to upgrade its tactical capabilities to new technology. The most viable option is the acquisition of second-hand ships available on the international market. The U.S. defense acquisition system has been in place for almost sixty years and has proven its efficiency by providing defense systems to the U.S. military services; therefore, after conducting a comprehensive literature search and bibliographic review, the U.S. DoD acquisition strategy was the model selected for a proposed acquisition strategy suitable for the Colombian Navy's unique conditions,. The resulting product, recommendations, concerns, and areas of further research coincide with the need to develop a flexible and reliable acquisition system to face the future of progress within the Colombian Navy.

Dagens ekonomiska klimat är kantat av möjligheterna och hoten från globalisering, ökad konkurrens och en alltjämt ökande takt, och ända sedan 1800-talet så har sammanslagningar och förvärv varit ett viktigt sätt för företag att konkurrera. Sammanslagningar och förvärv är aktiviteter som oftast styrs av begäret att uppnå synergi effekter, marknadsandelar, konkurrensfördelar och skalfördelar. I dag ligger mycket av medias och den akademiska fokusen på börsbolag, men Sveriges många små till medelstora privatägda företag, till exempel familjeföretag, bör inte falla i glömska. Dessa familjeföretag är olika jämfört med andra företag, inte bara när de kommer till ägarstruktur, men även på de organisatoriska och strategiska planen. Med detta i åtanke så verkar det finnas en lucka i den akademiska litteraturen när det kommer till just den här sortens frågeställning kring familjeföretag.

Syfte

Denna uppsats kommer undersöka förvärv inom familjeföretag med anledning av att öka kunskapen kring deras förvärvsstrategier och motiv. Författarna kommer även att studera till vilken grad kulturen influerar dessa strategier.

Metod

En fallstudieteknik valdes för att uppfylla syftet. Fallet behandlar förvärvsstrategin inom två medelstora familjeföretag, ROL AB och Bröderna Brandt Bil AB. Båda företagen har använt förvärv som tillväxtstrategi, och intervjuer genomfördes med strateger inom företagen för att samla in empirin.

Slutsats

Förvärvsstrategin verkar huvudsakligen styras av kulturen i de förvärvande och förvärvade företagen. Motiven påverkar också den valda förvärvsstrategin, och författarna identifierade också att förvärvets utfall till stor del beror på tidshorisonten som tillåts. I familjeföretag verkar det också som om ett lyckat förvärv fastställs av fler aspekter än i t.ex. börsföretag, där de finansiella avkastningen är viktigast. Värt att nämna är också att företag som internationaliserar måste vara beredda på att acceptera högre risk.


The context within which firms exist today is lined by the opportunities and threats of globalization, increased competition and a constantly intensifying pace. Ever since the 19th century mergers and acquisitions (M&A) have been an important way for firms to compete. Mergers and acquisitions are largely fuelled by the desire to attain synergies, market power, competitiveness and economics of scale and scope. Today, much focus in media and theory is directed towards publicly traded corporations, however, the importance of smaller to medium sized, privately owned companies, e.g. family businesses, should not be overlooked. Family businesses differ from other corporations, not only on the ownership structure but also on other organisational and strategic characteristics. Further, research within acquisitions and family businesses is very limited and there seems to be gap in literature regarding this constellations.

Purpose

This thesis will investigate acquisitions in family businesses in order to enhance the understanding of their acquisition strategy and motives. Further, the authors will study to what extent culture influences the acquisition strategy.

Method

A case study approach was chosen to achieve the purpose. The case concerned the acquisition strategy within two medium-sized family businesses, ROL AB and Bröderna Brandt Bil AB. Both companies has used acquisitions as tools for growth. The data was collected through interviews with strategists at the two companies.

Conclusion

The acquisition strategy seems to be mostly influenced by the culture in the acquiring and acquired company. Further, the acquisition motive also affects the chosen acquisition strategy. The authors also identified that whether a acquisition is successful or not depends on the time-frame. In family business, success also seems to be determined by more aspects than in e.g. public companies where success is driven by financial returns. In order to act in an international environment, one also needs to be prepared to accept higher risks.

Nowadays licensing practices have increased in importance and relevance driving the widespread diffusion of markets for technologies. Firms are shifting from a tactical to a strategic attitude towards licensing, addressing both business and corporate level objectives. The Open Innovation Paradigm has been embraced. Firms rely more and more on collaboration and external sourcing of knowledge. This new model of innovation requires firms to leverage on external technologies to unlock the potential of firms’ internal innovative efforts. In this context, firms’ competitive advantage depends both on their ability to recognize available opportunities inside and outside their boundaries and on their readiness to exploit them in order to fuel their innovation process dynamically. Licensing is one of the ways available to firm to ripe the advantages associated to an open attitude in technology strategy. From the licensee’s point view this implies challenging the so-called not-invented-here syndrome, affecting the more traditional firms that emphasize the myth of internal research and development supremacy. This also entails understanding the so-called cognitive constraints affecting the perfect functioning of markets for technologies that are associated to the costs for the assimilation, integration and exploitation of external knowledge by recipient firms. My thesis aimed at shedding light on new interesting issues associated to in-licensing activities that have been neglected by the literature on licensing and markets for technologies. The reason for this gap is associated to the “perspective bias” affecting the works within this stream of research. With very few notable exceptions, they have been generally concerned with the investigation of the so-called licensing dilemma of the licensor – whether to license out or to internally exploit the in-house developed technologies, while neglecting the licensee’s perspective. In my opinion, this has left rooms for improving the understanding of the determinants and conditions affecting licensing-in practices. From the licensee’s viewpoint, the licensing strategy deals with the search, integration, assimilation, exploitation of external technologies. As such it lies at the very hearth of firm’s technology strategy. Improving our understanding of this strategy is thus required to assess the full implications of in-licensing decisions as they shape firms’ innovation patterns and technological capabilities evolution. It also allow for understanding the so-called cognitive constraints associated to the not-invented-here syndrome. In recognition of that, the aim of my work is to contribute to the theoretical and empirical literature explaining the determinants of the licensee’s behavior, by providing a comprehensive theoretical framework as well as ad-hoc conceptual tools to understand and overcome frictions and to ease the achievement of satisfactory technology transfer agreements in the marketplace. Aiming at this, I investigate licensing-in in three different fashions developed in three research papers. In the first work, I investigate the links between licensing and the patterns of firms’ technological search diversification according to the framework of references of the Search literature, Resource-based Theory and the theory of general purpose technologies. In the second paper - that continues where the first one left off – I analyze the new concept of learning-bylicensing, in terms of development of new knowledge inside the licensee firms (e.g. new patents) some years after the acquisition of the license, according to the Dynamic Capabilities perspective. Finally, in the third study, Ideal with the determinants of the remuneration structure of patent licenses (form and amount), and in particular on the role of the upfront fee from the licensee’s perspective. Aiming at this, I combine the insights of two theoretical approaches: agency and real options theory.

Acquisitions for a value of approximately $2 trillion are conducted globally every year with the motives of i.e., enhanced market power and increased shareholder value. Despite the interest in acquisitions the failure rate on acquisitions in 2011 was estimated to 70-90 %. Thus researchers have called for further examination on acquisitions and especially on the acquisition process, and strategic fit and organizational fit, which is believed to facilitate the outcome of the acquisitions. The acquisition process is described as a linear process con- sisting of two sub processes, pre-acquisition and post-acquisition, that acquiring organiza- tions progress through step-wise. The purpose of this study is to examine how the acquisition process and strategic fit and organizational fit can be handled to facilitate successful acquisitions. In order to get a deep and comprehensive understanding of the acquisitions process, the authors of this thesis have conducted a case study. The company, ITAB Shop Concept AB, has a background of 20 successful acquisitions, which have contributed to a steady growth in both turnover and share price. ITAB Shop Concept AB has been researched through in- depth interviews with key persons in the management, responsible for the acquisitions conducted. By adopting a dynamic approach to the acquisition process and taking an overall view of the strategic fit and organizational fit in each phase of the acquisition process, organiza- tions can understand and prevent the possible issues leading to failure. Furthermore organ- izations might benefit from having an acquisition process adapted for each acquisition tar- get. For example it is found that by conducting due-diligence in the post-acquisition pro- cess instead of the pre-acquisition process, and keeping the same persons in the acquisition team, more efficient use of resources and prior experience is facilitated.

This thesis is a theoretical and empirical investigation of communication strategy use in the receptive behaviour of second/foreign language learners. The investigation is descriptive in design, and seeks to describe the phenomenon of communication strategies both as a constituent of communicative discourse and as a part of that discourse, in inter-relationship with other constituents. The theoretical framework for the research is an interactional one. Description is sought from analysis of the dynamics of communication. The need for a study on communication strategy use in reception lies in the fact that second/foreign language learners see reception as being particularly problematic, and in the fact that very little research has been done in the area of learners' solutions to problems in reception. The thesis concerns itself to define, describe and explain strategy use in reception. The theoretical investigation leads to the definition of communication strategies as: action taken at points in communication where limiting conditions prevail, or where there is distance between speaker and hearer communicative systems which is recognized, perceived as a problem, and which the individual seeks to reduce. The empirical investigation reveals that while this definition indicates the primary purpose of communication strategy use, there appears to be a secondary purpose, which is to manage impressions. Communication strategies are described as issuing from two different responses to communication problems achievement behaviour, where the problem is tackled, and avoidance behaviour, where it is not tackled. In the empirical study, these two responses appear, realized as achievement and avoidance strategies. Explanation for variation in strategy selection is sought from examination of a whole array of factors which operate simultaneously in any interaction. The empirical study finds that selection is related to the way factors operate at three levels. These are: the way communicative systems are used in particular interactions, the social constraints in operation in those interactions, and the personal constraints which are imposed by perceptions, attitudes, goals and capacities of the participants. The research has application to the study of native speaker/non-native speaker role-relationships. It is suggested that achievement strategies maintain the balance of power which usually exists between native and non-native speakers, and that avoidance strategies may alter that balance. There is also application to second and foreign language teaching. Some suggestions for teaching seem to be prescriptive, and to imply that learners should only use achievement behaviour to solve communication problems. This prescriptive approach is seen as unhelpful to learners.

In the past 12 years of sustained conflict, the Department of Defense (DoD) has procured thousands of unmanned systems, from ordnance disposal robots to airborne surveillance platforms to unmanned cargo helicopters. These assets have saved countless lives and have become critical to DoD strategy. The health of the U.S. robotics industry must become a national strategic imperative in order to maintain technology dominance. The cyclical nature of DoD funding inevitably results in industry expansion and consolidation. The unmanned systems industry will be subject to consolidation pressures. Keeping unmanned system cost-per-copy low is critical; thus, economies of scale should be highly valued. However, premature robotics industry consolidation could threaten innovation and competition that will be critical for the U.S. military to maintain its dominance. With impending budget reductions, there will be increasing pressure to narrow down on robotics technologies to achieve efficiencies and reduce costs. However, to maintain the health of the robotics industry, the acquisition strategy must be contingent on the evolution of industry. This thesis examines the defense robotics industry and historical technology S-curves for comparable industries and evaluates unmanned system acquisition strategies.

The rising cost of military aircraft has driven the DoD to increase the utilization of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components in new acquisitions. Despite several demonstrated advantages of COTS-based systems, challenges relating to obsolescence arise when attempting to design and sustain such systems using traditional acquisition processes. This research addresses these challenges through the creation of an Agile Systems Engineering framework that is specifically aimed at COTS-based systems. This framework, known as the Cyber-physical Acquisition Strategy for COTS-based Agility-Driven Engineering (CASCADE), amends the traditional systems engineering process through the addition of an "identification phase" during which requirements are balanced against the capabilities of commercially-available components. The CASCADE framework motivates the creation of a new Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) formulation which enables the creation of optimum obsolescence mitigation plans. Using this CASCADE MILP formulation, two sets of experiments are carried out: First, verification experiments demonstrate that the CASCADE MILP conforms to expected trends and agrees with existing results. Next, the CASCADE MILP is applied to a representative set of COTS-based systems in order to determine the appropriate level of obsolescence forecast accuracy, and to uncover new system-level cost-vs-reliability trends associated with COTS component modification.

Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) evolved as alternative governance structures for firms seeking to combine resources with other firms, access larger markets, or acquire strategic assets. In spite of managers’ enthusiasm about the practice, studies show mixed results regarding post-acquisition performance of acquiring firms. The impact of acquisitions on the performance of acquiring firms has therefore remained inconclusive. A few reasons for this have been suggested and recent meta-analytic research efforts indicate that studies in M&A may have ignored variables that have significant effects on post-acquisition performance. In a bid to extend the literature on M&A and identify cogent variables that impact on acquisition performance, this dissertation draws on social network theory to advance a proposition for the value-of-ties. This was done by examining the impact of directorate interlocks on acquisitions specifically and organizational strategy in general. A non-experimental cross-sectional study of 98 interlocked directorate companies simultaneously involved in acquisitions was conducted. Several multiple regression analyses were conducted and the results obtained suggest that there is a positive linear relationship between director interlocks and post-acquisition performance and that to some extent this relationship is moderated by acquisition experience. The study also showed that director interlocks have a negative linear relationship with acquisition premium. This study complements the body of knowledge on acquisitions and network theory. It also successfully combined a multi-level approach to research on organizations and strategic management.

This master thesis is in its five chapters dealing with the issue of cross-border mergers and acquisitions, taking as its main objective to describe a process of acquiring one company by another - from the perspective of a foreign acquirer - with an emphasis on identifying key attributes of his decision and the main criteria for selecting the final acquisition target. The first chapter sets theoretical basis for the work and provides definition, classification and characterization of motives for the implementation of mergers and acquisitions. American schools are becoming increasingly diverse, with an estimated 17 million first- and second-generation refugee and immigrant children residing in the United States. English learners navigate the challenges of learning how to read, write, and speak a new language, all while being expected to stay on grade level. Classroom teachers nationwide are looking for engaging ways to meet the needs of their students, despite resource and budget deficits. The purpose of this study was to explore the role that student-created vodcasts, or video podcasts, may play in the English acquisition of a Haitian learner. This research question morphed to focus on the perceptions and practices of this student’s middle school teacher of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in using vodcasting and other technologies to facilitate his English acquisition. A second research question explored the role of sociocultural learning regarding the learner’s creation of vodcasts. Guiding bodies of research in this work included second language acquisition research, particularly regarding identity formation involving brain-compatible teaching, sociocultural learning, and culturally relevant pedagogy (CRP). Data collection occurred between January 2015 and May 2015. The student and his teacher shared their perspectives in six interviews each during the data collection process. Other data sources included 2 student-created vodcasts, 1 created in a group and 1 created by the student alone, a writing sample, and results from the previous school year of the state English as a Second Language Achievement Test (ESLAT). The teacher found that the vodcasts, in combination with other factors, helped the student reflect on his writing, particularly regarding punctuation, and that he overcame an error with comma splices immediately after recording a vodcast. The student found that the practice of vodcasting, in combination with other factors, helped him practice academic language, as required by his teacher for the assignment. The teacher allowed the student to work individually for the second vodcast assignment, and stated that the result was of much higher quality overall, particularly noting an increase in the amount of time the student spent speaking. The data indicated that vodcasting, in conjunction with other strategies supporting language acquisition, might have played a positive role in the student’s progress in his ESOL class. Furthermore, according to both the student and the teacher, independent creation of the video was more effective for him than collaborative group work, which the teacher explained may have had causes rooted in the student’s home culture.

Building an aircraft carrier is one of the most complex manufacturing undertakings in the world. Each component must be designed, tested and manufactured to not only Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding's (NGSB) exceptionally high standards, but also to the standards, requirements and approvals of both the Navy and the US Federal Government. As a result of these standards and requirements, lead times for construction materials can exceed two years, while a similar component, purchased for industrial use may have a lead time of 90 days. To add to the complexity, the scheduled delivery date for the carrier is fixed, and compressed so that engineering design and construction must take place concurrently. In essence, the ship is under construction years before the design is complete. As a result of concurrent engineering, a complex procurement process and a limited vendor base, some material is chronically late to the Required-in-Yard (RIY) date, causing deviations from the optimal construction schedule and impacting the cost of the ship. This thesis analyzes the current CVN 78 valve purchasing process to identify opportunities to leverage the product model and existing process infrastructure to improve material delivery to schedule and decrease construction costs for CVN 79. It is the goal of this research to improve the supply chain to support the preferred construction schedule, while reducing cost and risk associated with component acquisition. This thesis begins with an analysis of the current supply chain system within NGSB New Carrier Construction.
(cont.) It then explores the current state of vendor relations between NGSB and the supply base. The cost impact for delaying construction due to delinquent valves is identified and presented. Then specific vendor management strategies are examined. This thesis proposes a framework for improving on-time delivery of the component and lowering overall supply chain cost by (1) pursuing strategic alliances with valve vendors, (2) providing greater visibility of demand earlier in the engineering design cycle and (3) using this visibility to drive procurement timing to improve delivery to scheduled need date. The thesis presents a case study in vendor collaboration and provides recommendations. Finally, it discusses the impact of applying the framework to similar components within the New Carrier Construction Program and the potential application of the framework to NGSB's other active programs and shipbuilding locations.

Avsikten är således att bidra med en empirisk analyserande och förklarande studie till den vetenskapliga diskussionen kring bolagsförvärv och då främst dess integrationsprocess. Syfte: Syftet med uppsatsen är att öka kunskapen om hur svenska aktiebolag med en uttalad förvärvsstrategi arbetar med integrationen av uppköpta företag. Vidare kommer de studerade bolagens integrationsprocess kartläggas för att identifiera och analysera vilka faktorer som är avgörande för integrationen och därmed leder till ett framgångsrikt förvärv.  Metod: Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ studie med en abduktiv ansats. En flerfallstudie tillämpas där det empiriska materialet inhämtas via semistrukturerade intervjuer från fem företag med uttalade förvärvsstrategier. Slutsats: Studiens resultat visar på att integrationen i fallföretagen är av mjukare karaktär och mer flytande i sin utformning. Avgörande för denna process är att fokus riktas mot värdeskapande aktiviteter och att integrationen situationsanpassas utefter varje förvärv. Detta i syfte att inte förbruka tid och resurser på åtgärder som genomförs efter standardiserade ramverk snarare än att se till det som de facto behöver åtgärdas. Ytterligare en slutsats är att det är avgörande att inte enbart se till integrationen som en isolerad företeelse utan att förstå helheten i förvärvsprocessen med dess tidigare faser.
Abstract Master Thesis in Business Administration Title: The design and implementation of the integration process in acquisitions - A multi-case study on Swedish limited companies with a defined acquisition strategy Background: Previous research on the acquisition and integration process is considered normative from a financial theoretical perspective with a focus on how an integration process should be carried out. However, the research has not to the same extent studied how this process actually is carried out. As a result, a knowledge gap is discovered in previous research regarding how an integration process is carried out in practice. The intention is thus to contribute with an empirical analytical and explanatory study to the scientific discussion about company acquisitions and mainly its integration process. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to create an enhanced knowledge of how Swedish limited companies with a defined acquisition strategy work with the integration of acquired companies. Furthermore, the integration process of the studied companies will be visualized to finally identify and analyze which factors are decisive for the integration and thus lead to a successful acquisition. Method: The thesis is a qualitative study with an abductive approach. A multi-case study is applied where the empirical material is obtained through semi-structured interviews from five companies with defined acquisition strategies. Conclusion: The results of the study indicate that the integration in the studied companies is less formal. Crucial to this process is that the focus is on value-creating activities and that the integration is adapted to the unique characteristics of each acquisition. This is to avoid time-wasting and resource-consuming activities due to standardized frameworks that do not create value. Another result is that it’s crucial not only to look at integration as an isolated phenomenon, but to understand the entire process of acquisition with its prior phases.

Acquisitions have become an increasingly used tool for corporate growth during the lastdecade. Even so, most acquisitions fail, due to a lack of focus on the human elements of the integration process. This research sheds light on the human integration process of acquisitions and more specifically, three of its critical elements; culture, structure and humanresources management. However, when investigating acquisitions at Atlas Copco it becomesapparent that these elements are emphasized and prioritized differently in differentacquisitions. By conducting 22 interviews with managers from both Atlas Copco and managers and employees from three of its acquired organizations, this paper seeks tounderstand how the acquirer should choose an appropriate human integration strategy and what factors that determine that choice. Furthermore, it examines how the acquirer should manage the employees of the acquired firm to facilitate the implementation of changes duringthe integration process. The results shows that the acquirer choose to emphasize and prioritize the aspects that are most important to reform in order to allow the implementationof future changes in the integration process. In these cases, the prioritized aspects are alsoconsidered critical to improve by the employees, therefore the prioritization creates a perception of the acquirer’s good intentions with the integration as a whole. Furthermore, the results reveals that it is important that the acquirer invest in resources for communication,trainings and additional personnel to help the employees understand and support the changesduring the entire process.

In the literature, translation techniques are either presented with a summary of practical experiences or examples in the translation of a particular text type (e.g., Le, 2000; Yu, 2012) or largely discussed from a theoretical point of view (e.g., Ge, 2002; Hu, 2009), but few studies, if any, are empirical or evidence-based, or focus on students’ acquisition of translation techniques, let alone that of explicitation. With a triangulation of process-based and product-based approaches, this study is a new attempt to investigate students’ acquisition of explicitation, a translation technique first identified by Vinay and Darbelnet ([1958] 1995) as “making explicit in the target language what remains implicit in the source language” (p. 342) and a key term that has received much attention since the widespread use of corpora in translation studies in the late 1990s. Explicit teaching of explicitation as a strategic procedure from a social constructivist perspective was applied to an experimental group to investigate the effectiveness of this intervention. Data revealed that participants in the experimental group were more effective in their post-test translation performances in terms of the two parameters of smoothness and the total score, showing statistically significant gains where their peers in the control group did not. Further, they showed in similar comparison with their peers and their own pre-test performances significant improvement in effective employment of pragmatic explicitation in the texts. However, there was no significant improvement in terms of the faithfulness parameter between the experimental and the control group and an analysis of the levels of the total scores of both groups indicated that no participants got an “excellent” or “good” score and the majority of them only got a “passable” one. Survey data of open-ended questions, translation journals, interview data and TAPs all revealed “Explicitation-taught” participants’ awareness of using this translation technique in translating. However, an analysis of their TAPs and translations revealed that there was a gap between what they knew about explicitaion and how they performed as reflected in the target texts they produced. On the other hand, an analysis of the participants’ translations of 28 key points in assignments revealed their inconsistent and unstable performances as novice translators with relatively low average accurate rates in their employment of explicitation from the perspectives of the four procedures of addition, clarification, foregrounding, and specification in relation to obligatory and optional explicitation and the grammatical, lexical, semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic dimension. In summary, the present study was an attempt to investigate language students’ acquisition of explicitation with a view of shedding light on instruction of translation techniques.

Mike Sutherlin, CEO of Joy Global Inc. (“JOY”), a global mining equipment manufacturer, was having lunch, in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his wife, in November of 2010 when his cell phone began ringing. He hesitated answering, but recognizing the name, picked up to hear surprising news. It was a courtesy call from a friend at Caterpillar Inc. (“CAT”), the $85 Billion USD juggernaut, letting him know that CAT had just purchased JOY’s cross town rival, Bucyrus International, Inc. (“BI”), for $8.8B USD. JOY and BI were 2 Milwaukee, Wisconsin based mining equipment manufacturers who competed head to head on a worldwide stage. Evenly matched, with a market cap around $7B USD each, these two companies had spared in the surface and underground mining equipment market for heavy duty extraction mining equipment for over a hundred years since their founding in 1888 and 1889, respectively. All of a sudden, with this acquisition, what had always been a cross town rivalry would take on new proportions. CAT was the undisputed world wide heavy machinery giant with a market cap 10 times the size of JOY. Regarding the acquisition, Sutherlin comments, “Instead of a smaller competition across town all of a sudden this changed the world for us.” CAT brought to the table revenues which were 12 times larger than JOY, a global brand that stood for reliable heavy machinery, exceptional service through its army of worldwide distributors, and the ability to win deals by financing equipment through CAT financial. Sutherlin´s team had just put the finishing touches on their strategic plan for 2010. The exercise had reaffirmed some of JOY´s strategies, such as a continued commitment to focus solely in the mining equipment industry (versus including construction and farming equipment markets like CAT), a direct sales and service go to market model (versus third party distributors like CAT), and a focus on premium products with premium pricing (versus wining deals on price like BI). The plan also called for some changes such as moving beyond the dependence on a single product for their surface mining division and a move beyond coal specific products for its underground division. Would this strategy need to be revised? Would the plan withstand this new challenge? Sutherlin knew it was time to get his leadership team together, circle the wagons, and figure out, what, if anything, JOY could do to respond to this new competitive threat from CAT.

This dissertation investigates the role which the acquisition of external resources plays in firm strategy. External Resource Acquisition (ERA) is a core strategic action for firm survival, especially when firms are faced with high munificence and uncertainty in regards to their resource environment. Primarily driven by the theoretical premises of the Resource Based View (RBV) of the firm (Barney, 1991; Wernerfelt, 1984), scholars have conceptualized ERA as predominantly a resource-driven action. Under this view, firms engage in ERA to alleviate their resource constraints (Combs & Ketchen, 1999), access complementary resources (e.g., Rothaermel, 2001b), and further enhance their knowledge base (e.g., Ahuja & Katila, 2001). These contributions significantly advance understanding on various dimensions of ERA, but they treat the competitive environment of the firm as an exogenous factor. While there is a good theoretical rationale of the exclusion of the competitive environment in terms of the explanatory power of the RBV and its theoretical limits (Peteraf & Barney, 2003), the treatment of ERA as solely a resource-driven action, I argue, significantly fails to provide a holistic assessment on the strategic implications of ERA. I address this gap by a) developing a conceptual framework of ERA that takes into account both the firm’s idiosyncratic attributes and its competitive environment, and b) providing an extensive empirical analysis on the patterns of ERA activity among competing firms. Departing from this resource-driven view of ERA, I argue that ERA can be also seen as a competitor-driven action. I propose that firms engage in ERA to also respond to their competitive environment and more specifically to their competitors’ ERA-related actions. To build the competitive side of my argument, I draw upon the competitive dynamics literature and theories of interorganizational imitation. Taking these two views together, I argue that ERA can be seen as a strategic action that leads to a broader set of strategic choices. Drawing from an extensive sample of 4,729 ERA actions among the top 50 biopharmaceutical firms between 1987 and 2006, my empirical analysis provides overall support for both the resource- and competitor- driven views of ERA. This dissertation makes at least three contributions to the field of strategy. First, it illustrates that firm strategy, at least in the context of ERA, can be better explained when both firm- and competitor- specific explanations of firm action are taken into account. This particularly important for scholars who view firms from a RBV point of view, and tend to exclude the competitive environment of the firm from their conceptual development and analysis. Second, to better understand complex strategic actions, such as ERA, scholars must adopt a broader theoretical perspective of strategic choice. The empirical support of ERA as both resource- and competitor- driven, illustrates that firm strategy cannot be sufficiently explained by one theoretical view. Third, my empirical analysis provides support for the temporal dimension of strategy, when firms are faced with changing technological paradigms. In the case of the biotechnology paradigm, for example, the extent which firm- and competitor- specific factors explain patterns of ERA changes over time.

With the Department of Defense's (DoD) budget being reduced to ever diminishing levels, DoD acquisition managers must acquire technologically superior weapon systems within fixed time periods with the least amount of resources. One way they can effectively accomplish this is by using a Nondevelopmental Item (NDI) acquisition strategy. One weapon system program that has successfully used such an NDI strategy is the U.S. Army's Avenger Air Defense System Program. This thesis examines the DoD acquisition process and how NDIs are used within the process. The thesis then analyzes the Avenger Program and its NDI acquisition strategy to determine what factors made the program successful. From this analysis, lessons-learned are identified that can be used by other acquisition managers and their staffs to effectively manage future NDI programs. Significant lessons-learned indicate that high-level support, a thorough market investigation and a tailored acquisition process are critical to the success of an NDI program

Rapid Prototyping has also been used for requirements definition and for defining man/machine interfaces. Through Rapid Prototyping, the AFSCN has successfully developed applications using new technology and has improved the process of defining requirements for operational satellite support systems. Rapid prototyping is proving to be an effective alternative to the traditional system acquisition process

A central tenet of this study is the notion that a reader's metacognition affects understanding. Identifying the organisational structure of text is a valuable tool for comprehending and recalling the writer's message. In this study, participants learned to identify text structure and to direct use of that knowledge toward facilitating their academic work. The research is about students acquiring a new strategy and adjusting it to meet the academic requirements of authentic tasks in their real life context. Theoretical bases for this research included metacognition, strategy acquisition, and top-level structure strategy. A review of the literature was conducted into teacher education, lifelong literacy, and top-level structure strategy. It uncovered limited data on strategic behaviour involving the target strategy in authentic contexts. Using case study method I examined if and how student teachers developed learning behaviour using top-level structure strategy (TLS) as the target strategy. This provided a theorization of the process by which each participant became a strategist. The theory describes and predicts that some learners adopt a strategy and find it useful, some adopt a strategy and then adapt it to suit perceived needs and complement existing strategies, and others try the target strategy, decide it is not effective, and reject it. The theory, while attractive, needs to be tested beyond limitations of the method used here, and warrants replication studies, particularly broader research using quantitative methods. A qualitative, case study design was used to examine and describe the effects of strategic instructional intervention. The study was conducted in the school of early childhood teacher education in which the researcher works as lecturer and Year 1 Dean. Ethical consideration was given to the recruitment process to ensure participants' well-being and volunteers were sought from among Year 2 students. Four women participated in the study, three enrolled full-time, and one enrolled part-time. Data were gathered from pre- and post-intervention tasks and questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and written journals. They were analysed using thematic methods of analysis. A final member-check with participants was conducted eight months after the end of intervention and data collection. Study findings provided insights into students' academic experiences. Prior to an instructional intervention, participants used a range of study strategies in academic work with limited metacognitive awareness. Instruction about top-level strategy benefited them in direct ways by providing a top-level structuring technique for completing academic tasks, and in indirect ways by providing a metalanguage for thinking about strategic behaviour, evaluating it, and customizing their technique. Comparison of task performance and questionnaire responses demonstrated qualitative changes in participants' approaches to reading text after instruction. Findings provided the basis for theorizing about participants' metacognitive development across the intervention. Interviews and focus groups provided additional information regarding participants' cognitive self-awareness, active engagement in learning, and application and adaptation of target strategy. Journal entries exemplified participants' authentic applications of the strategy and provided descriptions of their strategic behaviour. The instructional intervention affected participants' perceptions of the academic experience. They became more overtly reflective about how they read and wrote, particularly in relation to assessment items, and more expressive about the nature of their own learning. Study findings based on four participants in one particular context are sufficiently robust as case study research to warrant a broader quantitative study to test their generalization. Such an extension would provide guidance for teacher educators with decisions of policy and practice that might influence explicit attention to how student teachers in early childhood education learn about learning as part of their preparation for the profession.

Innovation has been powering industrial development for 200 years. Today, in times of social and environmental pressures, it is even more needed to support the transition towards a more sustainable society. Multinational corporations are potential systemic change agents by their global presence and impact magnitude on economics. However, a combination of short-termism and technological inertia rather favours incremental innovation. Meanwhile, some smaller companies have quickly integrated the value of doing ‘better’ rather than doing ‘less bad’, making innovation go hand-in-hand with sustainable development. Therefore, acquisitions represent an opportunity to spread a solution to addressing sustainability challenges faster, but the corporate decision-makers need concise, constructive guidelines for selecting and integrating these external opportunities. UniPlaces is a Portuguese start-up in the online reservation business covering the student housing market, which entered the London market in August 2013. After discussing with UniPlaces, it was possible to verify that their main issue in London is their customer acquisition strategy. Hence, the purpose of this Work Project will be to study and explore how UniPlaces can improve its customer’s acquisition strategy in the London market. An analysis of the market was performed in which it was analyzed what are the external factors that can influence customer acquisition such as the attractiveness of the student accommodation market. Moreover, an internal analysis of the firm was conducted in order to understand the company’s strengths and weaknesses as well as its capabilities. These analyses allowed the formulation of hypotheses that led to conclusions and recommendations that will help UniPlaces improve its customer acquisition strategy. With the aim to optimize the business model, strategies and tactics were defined about how to increase brand awareness, how to improve attractiveness of the website as well as the firm and how to improve performance both on the customer side (quality of service) and on the company side (efficacy and efficiency of internal resources). And afterwards an implementation plan was developed for the next three years.

Background : Globalisation has led company to think globally and act locally. Such a change in the business world have made emerge the need to find partner around the world, and even to merge with complementary companies in order to sustain the corporate strategic advantage and to create value.

Purpose : The objective of this paper is to integrate major Merger & Acquisitions theories in order to establish a warning model pointing out the main pitfalls changing promising motivations into failed implementation in the process of Merger & Acquisition. Such a model will aim at preventing managers engaged in a transnational horizontal merger from the potential hazards leading to value destruction.

Delimitations : We choose to focus on the transnational merger because it should play with different national management and with the consequent variance in cultural distance ; the human and social context appears more clearly as fundamentally variable when a merger involves different sensibilities.

Results : After having integrated the main theoretical finding into a holistic framework which enabled us to shape a warning model we tested successfully in case of Pharmacia-Upjohn merger, which aims at analysing the general risks of one strategic merger or/and the following implementation process.

The key mission of a defence force is the ability to execute successful operations. If it is unable to do this, it is only a liability to the nation, and its right to exist ceases. The White Paper on defence requires the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to be an affordable, small and technologically advanced force. The engineering technical family (ETF) is an integral part of this organisation and must contribute to its success. This study investigates how the ETF can enable the SANDF to be both successful and meet the requirements of the White Paper on defence. The success factors of a defence force are assumed to be based on the thirteen principles of war defined for the SANDF. This study proposes the ETF's contributions to the principles of war to increase the success of operations. The profiles of artisans, technicians, technologists and engineers, which are members of the ETF, are defined in terms of their technical and concomitant competences. This determines their roles. The ETF's competences are mapped to the requirements of the weapon systems during their life-cycle phases. This finding determines the mix of the ETF required over a typical weapon system's life. The strategy for aligning the ETF effort with the SANDF's core business is then developed. The ETF is divided into the technical services who ensure the readiness of weapon systems for the war-fighters, and the engineering services that change the baselines of the weapons systems to meet the changing demands of the the environment. The purposes of this research are to determine whether it is financially feasible and attractive to install sea water air conditioning (SWAC) at Naval Base (NB) Guam, which the Naval Facilities Engineering Command currently deems to be true; to develop an acquisition strategy that NB Guam would be able to use to procure a SWAC system; and to identify any environmental obstacles associated with installing a SWAC system at NB Guam. This includes environmental impact studies and potential long-term schedule effects of environmental research. This research provides the analytic underpinning for the SWAC-driven reduction of electricity consumption at a significant number of naval facilities, and it provides a significant contribution towards meeting the Secretary of the Navy’s renewable energy goals.

In this thesis I have developed an instructional design strategy for distance education second language programs. I have done this because of my dissatisfaction with the existing instructional design strategies, models and theories I work with which never seemed to accomplish their purpose adequately. What appears to be missing in all the existing instructional design methods is an emphasis on the people involved as opposed to mechanistic instructional processes. I adopted a post-structuralist research approach using ethnographic and phenomenographic methodology in order to investigate systematically the human factor in instructional design. Through interviews with writers of second language program materials I analysed their dominant concerns about instructional design. From this I was able to determine that the lack of consideration of people as human individuals involved in instructional design processes was instrumental in their and my dissatisfaction with instructional design processes. I used this information to develop an instructional design strategy that would give primacy to people in the instructional design process and allow a satisfactory process to take place for the design of distance education second language programs.

This study investigates the role of utilising an electronic portfolio in the context of vocabulary learning strategy (VLS) instruction. It aims to examine the use of a mixture of language learning strategies and skills required for learning management. Therefore, the current study incorporates e-portfolio as an application that can provide learners with practical and systematic steps and thus assist them to make control on their learning. This research adopted a mixed method approach to explore the impact of e-portfolio integration in the context of the VLS instruction on undergraduate learners’ strategic learning of vocabulary and academic vocabulary learning. This study employed a number of research instruments including vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire, academic vocabulary size test, interviews, artefacts and documentation of learning which forms comprehensive archival records (e-portfolio). E-portfolio was found to be insightful and reflective of the strategies learning and use processes. Utilising e-portfolio in the context of VLS instruction seemed to lead to more systematic and consistent strategic learning of vocabulary. This has been in conjunction with significant improvement in the learners’ academic vocabulary size and in their strategic vocabulary learning. Such improvement would make changes in learners’ understanding and awareness towards strategic learning. This could play important roles in accelerating and facilitating the learning process in general. However, there were issues of irregularities where learners were not systematic or show less consistency when it comes to strategies use in the e-portfolio. The findings of this research contribute to a better understanding of how the use of e-portfolio impact on the learners’ strategic learning and on their acquisition of academic vocabulary.

Language learning strategies have become an important element of second language acquisition research over the course of the last few decades. Much research on these strategies has been dedicated to speaking, reading, and other language skill sets. However, one essential skill needed for communication is pronunciation. No matter how proficient other areas of linguistic ability may be, it can be difficult to interact effectively with native speakers if one's pronunciation is poor. Yet research dedicated to pronunciation and language learning strategies is in surprisingly short supply. Of those studies that have researched pronunciation strategies, some have been dedicated to discovering new pronunciation strategies (Derwing & Rossiter, 2002; Osburne, 2003; and Vitanova & Miller, 2002), while others (Peterson, 2000) categorized pronunciation strategies using a well known strategy inventory. However, there is one study that has gone in a different direction concerning pronunciation strategies. Rather than categorize pronunciation strategies using a strategy taxonomy like Oxford (1990), Eckstein (2007) categorized pronunciation strategies using Kolb's (1984) Experiential Learning Cycle model and found significant effects between pronunciation accuracy and use of pronunciation strategies mapped using Eckstein's (2007) Pronunciation Acquisition Construct (PAC).The present study tested the PAC by teaching pronunciation strategies to L2 Japanese learners. The aim of the current study was to examine the effect of pronunciation strategy usage categorized using the PAC upon pronunciation gains and to examine learner differences based upon pronunciation gains and strategy usage. In doing so, significant gains were found in contextualized pronunciation. Additionally, subjects who more frequently used the strategy "think of benefits to be gained by improving pronunciation", a motivation strategy, were found to show higher levels of pronunciation gain in a non-contextualized pronunciation environment.

The thesis investigates the elements of a consistent strategy for favorable acquisition and utilization of Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTD), thus Full Flight Simulators (FFS) and Flight Training Devices (FTD). The primary purpose is to determine a knowledge-based strategy for the end-user, acquisition professional, aviation firms and institutions. Hence, it could be possible to shed a light for cooperative groups and main institutions of national innovation system involved in entrepreneurial and innovative efforts regarding complex technologies like FSTD. In the sample study, 114 pilots from varied sources were administered a questionnaire and their FFS and FTD perceptions were statistically tested regarding each &ldquo
technology&rsquo
s usefulness&rdquo
in four types of training. Another variable, each &ldquo
technology&rsquo
s ease of operation and use&rdquo
was also tested additionally via agent-based model whether it had any effect on technologies&rsquo
selection processes. It could be inferred that that aviation institutions and firms could acquire and utilize FTD as a complementary to both aircraft and FFS within a range of 30-60% depending upon type of the training. Moreover, FTD could be acquired and utilized as a substitute to FFS for Instrument Flight Training (IFT). The FTD&rsquo
s usefulness for IFT was rated as 67% by the military pilots. The research also asserts that the aviation institutions and firms as well as cooperative groups and organizations could favor the established strategy and policy during their FSTD related efforts at &ldquo
micro and meso-level&rdquo
. The final aim is to create a collaborative medium and a synergy for those agents.

ABSTRACT Using a single subject Multiple Baseline design, this study examined the efficacy of the Text Talk vocabulary acquisition strategy with regard to the use of new vocabulary by pre-kindergarten students in an inclusive classroom within a public charter school. Five pre-school students participated in the study. Students with varying exceptionalities as well as students with typical development were included in the study. Three classroom teachers implemented the Text Talk strategy utilizing eight books and vocabulary scenario models during an interactive story time that included the direct instruction of vocabulary in the study. During the baseline and intervention phases data collection occurred during story time and during a word chart activity. Data were collected as to whether the participants used the new vocabulary when prompted and demonstrated the meaning of new vocabulary during activities embedded in the direct instruction of vocabulary within the context of story time. A pre and post assessment was utilized during baseline and following the intervention. The data suggest that all participants exhibited an increase in the use of new vocabulary and demonstration of meaning of new words during story time. The increase in scores from the pre assessment to the post assessment may indicate that immersion in activities with new vocabulary and opportunities to represent the new words phonologically may have led to the acquisition of new vocabulary by all student participants. The teachers perceived the implementation to be effective and manageable within the classroom setting.

Over the past decades, Chinese firms have become major competitors in the global M&A space. The present thesis examines one of China's largest and most technology-intensive state-owned enterprises and its acquisitions-based internationalization strategy via a qualitative comparative case study-based research design. Contrary to existing research on firm internationalization that focuses on factors external to the firm, this thesis finds that entry mode decisions can be best explained by explanatory variables internal to the firm. In the area of China business studies, this thesis challenges widely held notions of Chinese state-owned enterprise executives and finds that managerial behaviour at these firms can be characterized as largely rational. Extant management scholarship focuses on the efficiency maximizing function of firm-internal markets. This thesis finds that reliance on internal markets is driven by the objective of effectiveness maximization. Internal markets are a critical post-acquisition integration value driver and integral component of a hybrid approach to post-acquisition integration that combines hierarchical and market-based forms of coordination and that challenges the “light touch” concept widely held in China business studies. Extant studies on knowledge transfer highlight capabilities, motivations, and network positioning as explanatory variables for a firm's absorptive capacity. In contrast, this thesis focuses on “failure avoidance” driven managerial behaviour as the main constraint on a firm's ability to exploit knowledge from its acquisitions. This thesis contributes to the literature by i) exploring an understudied empirical setting (i.e. Chinese state-owned enterprise), ii) answering calls for greater research on post-acquisition integration and the underlying firm-internal mechanisms and dynamics below the level of the firm, and iii) by augmenting existing management theoretical concepts (i.e. firm internal dynamics as entry mode determinants, internal markets as post-acquisition integration value drivers, and managerial behaviour as constraint on absorptive capacity).

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Research to date on language learning strategy (LLS) use and its influence on second language (L2) acquisition and proficiency has produced variable results. While many researchers feel that LLSs have an important role to play in L2 learning and teaching, a clear definition and classification of LLSs, as well as clear guidelines for LLS application and training, have yet to be established. LLS use and preference seem to be influenced by various factors such as culture, age, level of L2 proficiency and level of education. Therefore, results of specific studies are not necessarily applicable to different groups of L2 learners. This thesis reports on an investigation into the LLS use of first language (L1) isiXhosa adolescents in the acquisition of English. Using the Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), the study examines the relationship between LLS use as well as LLS preference and L2 proficiency, with an assessment of the gender differences in LLS use. The study found no significant relationship between LLS use or LLS preference and English proficiency. Also, no significant difference was found between the reported preferred LLSs of female and male participants, although male participants reported significantly more high-frequency LLS use, whereas female participants reported significantly more low-frequency LLS use. Conclusions drawn from the results of the study are discussed, followed by suggestions for future research and a brief discussion of the implications of these results for L2 teaching and learning, specifically in a South African context.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Navorsing oor die gebruik van taalleerstrategieë (TLSe) en die invloed daarvan op tweedetaal(T2-)verwerwing het tot dusver uiteenlopende resultate opgelewer. Terwyl baie navorsers van mening is dat TLSe 'n belangrike rol het om te speel in die leer en onderrig van 'n T2, moet 'n duidelike definisie en klassifikasie van TLSe, asook duidelike riglyne vir TLS-aanwending en -opleiding, nog daargestel word. Die gebruik en voorkeur van TLSe word klaarblyklik deur verskeie faktore beïnvloed, insluitend kultuur, ouderdom, vlak van T2-vaardigheid en vlak van opvoeding. Resultate van spesifieke studies is derhalwe nie noodwendig bruikbaar vir verskillende groepe T2-leerders nie. Hierdie tesis lewer verslag oor ‘n ondersoek na die gebruik van TLSe deur T1 isiXhosa adolessente in die verwerwing van Engels. Die studie stel ondersoek in na die verhouding tussen TLS-gebruik asook -voorkeur, gemeet deur die Strategy Inventory for Language Learning (SILL), en T2-vaardigheid, met 'n beoordeling van die geslagsverskille in TLS-gebruik. Die studie het geen beduidende verhouding tussen TLS-gebruik of TLS-voorkeur en Engelse vaardigheid gevind nie. Rugby is a power-oriented sport for which the Olympic lifts are considered supplementary activities in developing explosive strength. However, as complex specialist skills, many strength and conditioning coaches find these difficult to teach. This is compounded by the lack of research into skill acquisition aspects of the Olympic weightlifting, and the conflicting advice offered by cognitive and ecological camps within the motor learning literature. The purpose of the thesis was to investigate the influence of learning strategy on co-ordination when acquiring the weightlifting clean.
