I denna systematiska litteraturstudie presenteras resultat av vad tidigare forskning konstaterat om lässtrategier i frågan om hur de används och vad de innebär för elever i skolåren 9–12. Uppsatsen visar att den utbildningsforskning som berört lässtrategier under de senaste tio åren inte behandlar strategisk läsning med konsensus i begrepp eller förklaringsmodeller, utan att det istället finns olika synpunkter om både vad lässtrategier är och vad de innebär för läsaren. Studien visar också att lässtrategier används frekvent hos elever i skolåren 9–12 inom och utanför Sverige, både bland skickliga läsare och bland mindre skickliga läsare, för att främja läsförståelse. Vad som skiljer dessa skickliga respektive mindre skickliga läsare från varandra tycks till viss del vara kvaliteten av deras strategiska läsning och hur de använder lässtrategier till sin fördel för att förstå text. Uppsatsen undersöker olika aspekter av lässtrategier och konstaterar att det finns främst tre faktorer som påverkar lässtrategiers effektivitet. Dessa är: 1) Huruvida eleven besitter metakognitiv medvetenhet och gör aktiva val vid strategisk läsning. 2) Elevens förmåga att kombinera olika strategier med varandra. 3) Elevens förmåga att utvärdera sin egen läsning.
In this systematic review, results of previous research on strategic reading were analyzed and presented regarding the question of how students (year 9–12) use reading strategies, and what these strategies mean to reading comprehension levels. The review found that studies which have investigated strategic reading during the past ten years subscribe to different viewpoints and models regarding what reading strategies are, how they should be described, as well as how they should be used by students to further their reading comprehension. While the review further concludes that both good readers and less skilled readers among students in secondary school, frequently do use reading strategies, it also provides evidence to support the idea that these strategies must be used in a certain way for them to be effective. The review presents information from previous research which pertains to the different aspects of reading strategy, and what makes strategic reading effective in terms of furthering reading comprehension. These aspects include: 1) The level of metacognitive awareness that the reader possesses when choosing and using strategies. 2) The readers ability to effectively combine strategies with each other. 3) The readers level of insight into his or her strategy use via the use of control strategies and reflection.

Strateginis valdymas yra pagrindinė magistrinio darbo „Bioetanolio gamybos verslo įmonės valdymo strategijos modeliavimas“ tema. Strateginis valdymas yra pateikiamas ne tik kaip teorinis procesas, susidedantis iš strateginės analizės, strategijos formavimo ir strategijos ��gyvendinimo etapų, bet ir praktinis modelis, taikytinas bioetanolio gamybos verslo atveju. Bioetanolio verslas Lietuvos rinkoje yra pakankamai nauja veiklos sritis, pasižyminti nedideliu konkurentų skaičiumi ir nesuformuotais produkcijos realizavimo kanalais. Dėl šios priežasties didžioji dalis bioetanolio produkcijos yra eksportuojama. Tačiau palanki teisinė aplinka, sąlygoja geras vystymosi ir plėtros tendencijas ir vietinėje rinkoje. Siekiant suformuoti tikslingą bioetanolio gamybos verslo strateginio valdymo modelį, yra atlikti tiek teoriniai, tiek empiriniai tyrimai. Jų rezultatai sudarė sąlygas ne tik pasirinkti greito įsiskverbimo į vietinę rinką ir eksporto per prekybos tarpininkus strategijas, bet ir parengti veiksmų (finansų, marketingo, gamybos, organizacinių) programas bei įvertinti finansines-investicines strateginio valdymo įgyvendinimo proceso galimybes ir identifikuoti įgijamus konkurencinius pranašumus rinkoje.
Strategic management is the main Master‘s “Modelling of management strategy in business of bioethanol industry” thesis. Strategic management is considered not only as theoretical process, including strategic analysis, strategy formulation and strategy implementation stages, but also as practical model, applicable in bioethanol industry. Bioethanol industry is quite new activity field in Lithuanian market, characterized by a little number of competitors and unformed distribution channels of production. For that reason the vast majority of bioethanol production is being exported. But favourable legal enviroment causes good development and expansion tendencies in local market as well. To form a model of strategic management of bioethanol industry, it have been made and defined theoretical and empirical researches. The results caused both an opportunity to select a fast infiltration to local market and export by sales agents strategies and to formulate such operational programmes as finance, marketing, organizational and production. There is also a possibility to evaluate financial opportunities of implementation of strategic management process and to indicate the main competitive advantages in the market.

Bakgrund: I dagens samhälle präglas organisationer av ekonomiska förändringar, detta genom globalisering, förändrade kundförhållanden och en ökad konkurrens. Organisationer behöver hela tiden förbättra sin konkurrenskraft genom att effektivisera sin verksamhet. Idag ses medarbetarna som organisationers viktigaste tillgång eftersom att de förser organisationer med viktiga källor för att bli konkurrenskraftiga. Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) är ett arbetssätt som handlar om att utforma HR-strategier som gör att medarbetarnas kunskap och kompetens bidrar till att nå organisationens övergripande mål. Syfte: Syftet med studien har varit att undersöka hur organisationen använder ett strategiskt HR-arbete (SHRM) och om det är ett framgångsrikt arbetssätt. Vår studie har bidragit till en ökad förståelse om begreppet SHRM och hur det kan användas samt hur SHRM kan påverka organisationen. Metod: Insamlingen av vårt empiriska material bygger på en kvalitativ metod där vi genomfört djupgående intervjuer med HR-chefer som arbetar i en organisation som är verksam inom fordonsindustrin. Slutsats: Vi har kommit fram till att organisationen använder SHRM som arbetssätt. Vi kan dock inte dra några konkreta slutsatser om hur SHRM påverkar or-ganisationen men det finns tydliga indikationer på att SHRM har en positiv inverkan och bidrar till en ökad produktivitet och effektivitet. Vi har även kommit fram till att det är viktigt att organisationen utövar ett ledarskap som främjar SHRM.
Background: In today's society organizations are characterized by economic changes, this by globalization, changing customer circumstances and increased competition. Organizations need to constantly improve their competitiveness by streamlining its operations. Today, employees are seen as the organizations most important asset, this because they provide organizations with important sources to become competitive. Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) is an approach that is about to build HR-strategies that make employees knowledge and skills to contribute the organizations to achieve the overall goals. Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine how the organization is using a strategic HR-work (SHRM) and if it is a successful strategy. Our study has contributed to a better understanding of the concept of SHRM and how it can be used and how SHRM can affect the organization. Method: The collection of our empirical material is based on a qualitative approach where we conducted in-depth interviews with HR-managers working in an organization that is active in the automotive industry. Conclusion: We have concluded that our survey shows that the organization uses the SHRM as working strategy. However, we can not draw any concrete conclusions in which way SHRM affect the organization, but there are clear indications that SHRM has a positive effect, contributing to increased productivity and efficiency. A further conclusion of our study is that it´s very important that the organization have a leadership that promotes SHRM.

The 2008 financial crisis created new conditions for the listed Swedish property companies and the choice of operational and financial strategy became increasingly important. The purpose of this paper is to identify the listed property companies and their strategies for the period 2002 ‐2011, in order to examine whether these has changed in any direction and if they were more or less profitable. To accomplish this, data was collected from the companies' annual reports and statistical institutes. This was followed up with interviews with company representatives and experts to further broadened the analytical basis. Collected data helped to identify each companies strategies year by year. The analysis revealed some trends among companies regarding their operational and financial strategy. By looking at the Operating strategies we have found that the companies have become more specialized towards either a particular property type or to a geographical region. The companies have also increased their focus on cash flow and reduced their focus on transactions. Financially, the companies have reduced their risks by seeking a more long term capital structure. Alternative sources of funding such as bonds have also become more common among the companies. With the exception of the specialization strategy, the most obvious change in strategy occurred in connection with the financial crisis of 2008. It was also found that the companies that were most transaction ‐intensive also have been most volatile in a profit perspective.
Finanskrisen 2008 skapade nya förutsättningar för de noterade svenska fastighetsbolagen och valet av operativ och finansiell strategi blev allt mer viktig. Syftet med denna uppsats är att kartlägga de noterade Fastighetsbolagen och deras strategier under perioden 2002 ‐2011, för att sedan undersöka huruvida dessa förändrats i någon riktning och om de varit mer eller mindre gynnsamma. För att genomföra detta samlades data in från bolagens årsredovisningar och statistiska institut. Detta följdes upp med intervjuer där bolagsrepresentanter och sakkunniga ytterligare breddade analysunderlaget. Insamlad data bidrog till att fastställa de enskilda bolagens strategier år för år. Analysen visade vissa trender bland bolagen gällande deras operativa och finansiella strategi. Operativt har bolagen blivit mer specialiserade mot antingen en viss fastighets typ eller mot en geografisk region. Bolagen har också ökat fokus på kassaflöden/förvaltning och minskat fokus på transaktioner. Finansiellt har bolagen minskat riskerna genom att sträva efter längre kapital ‐ och räntebindning. Man har också i större grad sökt alternativa finansieringskällor såsom obligationer. Med undantag för specialiseringsstrategin har de tydligaste förändringarna i strategin skett i samband med finanskrisen 2008. Det visade sig också att de bolag som varit mest transaktionsintensiva också har varit mest volatila i ett resultatperspektiv.

Background: It is important to develop and execute human resource practices that generate employee competencies and behaviours the company needs to achieve its strategic goals. SHRM is about how to align HR strategies with corporate strategies, and implemented in a correct way SHRM can be an efficient tool to use for enhancing organisational performance.

Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is to evaluate the alignment between EWES Stålfjäder AB´s corporate strategies and its HR strategies.

Method: To study this we believe it was accurate to use a qualitative method approach. The empirical study consists of semi-structured interviews as well as written documents.

Analysis: The structure of the analysis follows the theoretical framework. We have used the model developed by Dessler (2008, p. 95), “How to Align HR Strategy and Actions with Business Strategy”.

Conclusions: We found that EWES Stålfjäder AB need to clarify their corporate strategies throughout the whole organisation. This will help them to identify and implement HR strategies that are in line with them. Working in this manner, we believe it will help EWES to conceptualize and execute accurate changes the organisation needs to accomplish their corporate strategies. Furthermore, we found that most of EWES’ HR practices become more like add-ons than strategic activities that are aligned with their corporate strategies.

The phenomenon of declining industries has been sparsely researched and few scholars have investigated whether firms pursue, or should pursue, growth in industries that are in decline. This study aims to find out if and how firms pursue growth when they perceive the industries in which they operate as experiencing a decline. The study also aims to examine the key factors that influence firm strategy in declining industries. We interviewed managers in firms operating in two declining industries, the Swedish retail fuel industry and the Finnish printing industry.   Our finding is that the studied firms operating in these two industries are aware of the declining state of their industries. However, all of them believe that their respective industries will transform instead of perish. Consequently, these firms pursue growth through various strategies to better position themselves within the changing conditions and declining state of their respective industries. Both internal and external factors influence firm strategy, and the factors were both industry and firm-specific. The firms studied tended to employ strategies based on their perception of their industries. In addition, the strategies were developed to both suit the current and the future industry environment. We label these strategies transformational strategies. We build on this new strategic option and construct a guiding framework that aims to facilitate firms’ strategic decision-making in declining industries.

Small businesses in the United States employ 98% of workers, yet approximately 47% of small businesses shut down in less than five years. Business leaders who fail to implement adequate strategic strategies experience reduced profits and sustainability challenges. These business closures cause unemployment rates to rise and inflict damages to the economic growth of economies in the United States. This multiple case study was grounded in the theory of transformational leadership. The purpose was to explore strategies used by small financial business owners to sustain their businesses beyond five years. The population consisted of 8small financial businesses in Southwest Florida; these businesses all have been in operation beyond 5years. Using methodological triangulation, data were collected from interviews with the leaders, company documents, physical artifacts such as the company websites and social media pages, to assess culture similarities and differences. Thematic analysis involved developing codes and themes from data collected and member checking. Four themes emerged transformational leadership, establishing trust, maintaining adequate capital, and proficient time management. These themes applied by business owners may help business owners experience greater success in remaining sustainable. The findings of this study could contribute to positive social change by providing insights for small financial business owners on the strategic implementations for business longevity that would possibly increase workplace stability for employees supporting their families as well as contributing positively to their communities in Southwest Florida

M&A is a strategy with a process that greatly revolves around achieving an approved merger, and subsequently being ready to act upon an approval. The strategy’s focuses are on the preparation and the analysis of the merger. A firm that is consistently up-to-date on the information available and on the status of the market, can prosper when opportunities reveal themselves. This paper studies business strategies from the point of view of what might bring growth to firms, based on theory and empirical evidence. Moreover, a case study is used of the firm Smile Tandvård, who actively uses M&A. The study is consisting of a research of the theoretical background, to enable links from several of these theories into the case study, as well as into the analysis. Additionally, was an interview conducted with the accounting manager of Smile Tandvård to get a clear insightinto the firm’s processes. The qualitative part showed the theories, the empirical evidence and the case study aligning in their characteristics, where I could pinpoint certain aspects of Smile Tandvård to the choices a firm has on a market, according to the theories. Moreover, showed the research there being plentiful ways in which you could examine the success of a merger or an acquisition. The direct result or direct returns not being the sole aim when deciding on M&A, and there were competitive advantages to gain. The quantitative test showed there being a correlation between business cycles and the amount of mergers and acquisitions.
Fusioner & Förvärv som strategi, har en process som till stor del handlar om att få förvärvet godkänt, och sedermera kunna agera vid godkännandet. Strategins fokus är på förberedelsen och analysen inför förvärvet. Ett företag som är konsekvent uppdaterat på den tillgängliga informationen och statusen på marknaden, kan uppnå framgångar genom detta när möjligheter uppstår. Denna studie undersöker företagsstrategier från perspektivet av vad som kan ge företag tillväxt, via en bas av teori och empiri. Utöver det, används en fallstudie av Smile Tandvård, som aktivt använder sig av strategin av fusioner & förvärv. Studien består av en research av befintligt teori, för att möjliggöra flera kopplingar till fallstudien, såväl som till analysen. Adderat till det, utfördes en intervju med redovisningschefen hos Smile Tandvård, för att kunna få en klar inblick i företagets processer. Den kvalitativa studien visade att teori, empiri och fallstudien följer och knyter an till varandra i sina kännetecknande drag, vilket möjliggjorde att jag kunde precisera aspekter hos Smile Tandvård som följer de val ett företag ställs inför på en marknad, enligt teorin. Därtill, visade undersökningen att det finns åtskilliga sätt att tolka och granska fusionen eller förvärvets framgång. Med det direkta resultatet eller den direkta avkastningen icke varande det enda ett företag siktar mot vad gällande fusioner och förvärv, det fanns även konkurrensfördelar att vinna. Det kvantitativa testet visade att det fanns en korrelation emellan konjunkturcykler och antalet fusioner & förvärv.

Självexponering (self-disclosure) är en process där man delar med sigav sina tankar, känslor och berättar saker om sig själv till en annanperson av egen vilja. Syftet med studien var att undersöka vadungdomar berättar och inte berättar till sina föräldrar och undersökavilka strategier de använder. Ungdomar i årskurs åtta i en stadbelägen i Mellansverige blev intervjuade i grupp. Totalt 53respondenter ställde upp på intervjuerna, varav 26 var flickor och 27pojkar. En tematisk analys genomfördes och materialet struktureradesin i fem olika teman: positiva upplevelser, negativa upplevelser, närarelationer, fritidsaktiviteter och filtreringsstrategier. Ungdomar valdeoftast att strategiskt dölja information då de kände att föräldrarnakunde bli upprörda, vilket var något de ville undvika. Undanhållandetav information kunde även kopplas till rädsla och ängslan över attbehöva ha djupa samtal med föräldrarna. Utlämnandet av informationberodde på hur bra relationen var mellan förälder och barn.
Self-disclosure is a process of sharing your thoughts, feelings andsharing information about yourself to another person. The purpose ofthis study was to examine what adolescents disclose and what theydon't disclose to their parents as well as how they withholdinformation from their parents. A total of 53 adolescents consisting of26 females and 27 males in the 8th grade participated in groupinterviewsin this study. In a thematic analysis of interviews, it wasfound five different themes: positive experiences, negativeexperiences, close relationships, leisure activities and strategies forwithholding information. The results showed that adolescents chose towithhold information from their parents when they felt that theirparents could get upset. Adolescents feared the consequences andwanted to avoid conversations with their parents where they had toexplain themselves. Disclosure of information depended often on howstrong the relationship was between parent and child.

La administración estratégica y sus diferentes herramientas aplicadas a los procesos dentro de una organización han sido fundamentales para establecer objetivos y lineamientos de acción para los directivos. Esta investigación presenta y analiza investigaciones relevantes sobre las principales características y beneficios del proceso de administración estratégica y las técnicas que se implementan para lograr estrategias deliberadas que ofrece esta metodología. Por otro lado, la búsqueda de competitividad por parte de las organizaciones, mediante la aplicación de estrategias oportunas, hará que los directivos adopten habilidades que les permita afrontar los cambios en el mercado y generar ventajas competitivas. Este trabajo compara las técnicas de la administración estratégica con la teoría de estrategia competitiva, analizando cada una de las características principales de ambas corrientes; por un lado, las estrategias deliberadas establecidas en un período de largo plazo, frente a situaciones de incertidumbre y cambios en el mercado que refiere la teoría de aplicación de estrategias emergentes en el corto plazo.

This research presents and analyzes relevant research on the main characteristics and benefits of the strategic management process and the techniques that are implemented to achieve deliberate strategies offered by this methodology. On the other hand, the search for competitiveness by organizations, through the application of timely strategies, will make managers adopt skills that allow them to face changes in the market and generate competitive advantages. This paper compares the techniques of strategic management with the theory of competitive strategy, analyzing each of the main characteristics of both currents; On the one hand, the deliberate strategies established in a long-term period, in the face of situations of uncertainty and changes in the market referred by the theory of application of emerging strategies in the short term.

[Abstract]Within the Australian marketplace there is often considerable similarity between competing products and services. The need for all firms to develop a competitive advantage in this market is pressing. Franchises are a growing competitive business sector in Australia, with an annual growth rate in excess of 12%. Franchised business units are no different from other firms in that they need to develop a competitive advantage. Within this current fast changing business environment there has not been any research published on how owners and operators within franchised business units in Australia use organisational learning strategies to develop their strategic capability with a view to gaining a competitive advantage. Many firms have adopted traditional training approaches in organisational learning to develop their firm’s strategic capability believing this strategy to be in line with best practice. This narrow training view of organisational learning involves key employees within a firm identifying skill gaps between where the firm needs to be and the current competencies of their staff. The gap is then bridged by traditional training methods that extend staff competencies to meet the firm’s requirements. These traditional training approaches separate learning from the work context and have been identified by many researchers over the years as an inefficient practice. This study was undertaken using a case study approach based on semi-structured interviews to gain an understanding on how franchised business units in Australia used a range of organisational learning strategies to develop their strategic capability. People were interviewed from various organisational levels at five major franchises. The study found that strategic capability is enhanced by developing a learning environment that integrated both operational and strategic learning strategies. Based on the research findings, a franchised business unit’s strategic capability will, in many cases, determine the difference between the franchise’s performance in the marketplace and that of its competitors, hence, developing organisational learning strategies to gain and apply these capabilities are of a critical importance in a franchised business unit gaining a competitive advantage. The study found a number of key ingredients in organisational learning strategy that built a firm’s capability. These key ingredients include adopting a work-based learning strategy which incorporates learning activities such as listening and observing others in the workplace; regular internal training; access to external courses; controlled on-the-job training and supporting individuals and groups within their normal work; developing and implementing accredited in-house learning which would include opportunities for staff to develop both operational and strategic levels of learning; formal and informal mentoring for developing the skills of individuals and groups; participation in higher education; and the use of internal state and national franchise conferences as a tool in developing staff and to provide a work environment where empowerment of staff at all levels is encouraged, accepted and supported by the required learning strategies to make it successful. For franchised businesses within Australia aspiring to gain or build on competitive advantage, it is envisaged that the findings of this research will foster the implementation of a combination of organisational learning strategies that encompass both operational and strategic learning, and include learning for both the individual and collective groups.

The purpose of this paper was to discover the politeness schemes in two languages – American English and Lithuanian – and then compare the means of expressing politeness strategies in the two mentioned languages. The method used in the paper is a survey, evaluated by both qualitative and quantitative methods. The research illustrated that the two mentioned cultures do indeed use the speech acts of gratitude and apology. It also showed that American Female and American Male groups tend to choose more polite reactions, while Lithuanian Female and Lithuanian Male groups tend to use less polite reactions more often. Americans (both genders) do not imply the feeling of gratitude or apology, they say it directly. The Lithuanians (both genders) expressed gratitude or apology in everyday situations not as often and not as directly. In other words, the Lithuanian culture tends to use positive politeness; and vice versa, the American culture tends to use negative politeness. Besides that, the research revealed that gender plays a significant role in the answers of the survey respondents. The Female Americans and Female Lithuanians seem to be more polite than their male counterparts. It was also revealed that the respondents of American nationality express gratitude or apology in a more polite way and use more speech acts of gratitude or apology in both private and public spheres than the group of Lithuanian respondents. Šio mokslinio darbo tikslas yra atskleisti mandagumo schemas dviejose kalbose – amerikiečių ir lietuvių – o veliau palyginti mandagumo raiškos priemones abiejose paminėtose kalbose. Tyrimo klausimas šiame darbe yra: Kas yra mandagu ir nemandagu amerikiečių ir lietuvių kultūrose ir kas yra laikoma mandagiu ir nemandagiu amerikiečių ir lietuvių kultūrose, kai tai būna pateikta kasdienėse situacijose (išreiškiant dėkingumą ir atsiprašymą)? Šiame moksliniame darbe aš pirmiausia gilinausi į teorinius aspektus, kurie susiję su mandagumo strategijomis pragmatikoje, vėliau tyrinėjau mandagumo raiškos priemones lietuvių ir amerikiečių kalbose, ir galiausiai lyginau mandagumo strategijų panašumus ir skirtumus, pagal tai, kaip jie yra išreikšti abiejose paminėtose kalbose. With increasing opportunities to study abroad, learning to read in a foreign language has become increasingly important for countless second language learners. International students in pursuit of higher education degrees are required and expected to read in the target language at the same level of fluency and comprehension as their native-speaking counterparts. The number of international students studying in Arabic higher education institutions has followed the general ascending trend. For these second language speakers of Arabic, good reading skills in Arabic are essential for their academic success. Since the use of reading strategies is an important component of first and second language reading, this study aimed to investigate the use of reading strategies by native and non-native speakers of Arabic when reading academic materials in Arabic. In addition, it aimed to explore possible differences in the use of reading strategies between these two groups. For this purpose, a total of 305 students participated in the study. A survey composed of 30 items was administered to 222 non-native speakers of Arabic, and the same survey with 28 items was administered to 83 native speakers of Arabic. The survey included demographic questions adapted from Mokhtari and Sheorey (2008) and employed the questionnaire SORS used by Mokhtari and Sheorey (2002). These 30 items belonged to three strategy subscales: Global, Problem-solving, and Support strategies. To analyze the collected data, descriptive statistics and multiple independent t-tests were performed. In addition, an analysis was performed to find the most and least used reading strategies by both groups as well as possible differences between them in terms of reading strategy use. Problem-solving strategies were the most frequently used by both groups with a slightly higher use by the non-native speakers. Regarding the other two types, the native and non-native speakers showed different preferences. Specifically, Support strategies were the second most favored type among the non-native speakers, whereas for the native speakers, the second most frequently used type were Global strategies. However, even though Global strategies were the least used among non-native speakers, the non-native speakers' mean score on Global strategies use was higher than the native speaker score of use. Overall, the similarities and differences in the use of reading strategies by native and non-native speakers of Arabic deserve attention because they carry implications for both reading research and pedagogy. These empirical findings can be used by Education policy makers to create training courses and workshops that will help students improve their reading skills in general and reading strategies in particular. This study also suggests that there is a need for further research that will examine how the use of reading strategies is related to the academic performance of native and non-native speakers.

Language learning strategies have been given a large role in the Swedish curriculum for modern languages and the usage of strategies is one of the requirements for getting a passing grade in the subject. However, language learning strategies is a term that is hard to grasp when seeing it without a context. Even in a context it can be hard to explain what is really meant. This study tries to explain what language learning strategies are in relation to the Swedish school system and aims to find out if these strategies are to be found and how they are used in two Swedish-German textbooks.The study shows that there are no explicit examples where a certain type of languagelearning strategy is to be found. Nevertheless, there are multiple instances where both books offer assignments that can lead to the usage of said strategies.

Thesis aim: The aim is to investigate the current state of digital business strategies which includes highlighting benefits and challenges. By doing that we also are aiming towards answering, in what way ITBA can be questioned due to DBS. Methodology: A qualitative research based on a multiple case study by conducting semi- structured interviews. All the selected case companies are using digital business strategies as a part of their internal and external business environment (IEBE). The respondents have a role in the chosen case companies of being responsible for the implementation and use of strategies, digital business strategies and digital technologies. Findings: This study identifies that their exits a linkage between business strategy and ITBA. The main finding about the current state of DBS involves both internal and external DBS activities. Further findings show that benefit of digital business strategy to be the opportunity to levering costumers and challenges to be connected to the different IT maturity levels of the employees. The way that digital business strategy can question ITBA is based on that it is the driver for change for the case companies.

Collaborative strategy is represented as a series of recommendations for companies (and other organizations) that are considering participation in a shared economy. This document is based on the analysis of the business models and associated IT platforms which are used by organizations operating in the shared economy. In the thesis are identified key mechanisms and technical resources that enable the businesses to implement a sharing of resources between suppliers and users of these resources. Based on the obtained data were compiled individual strategies, each containing recommendations for the area of ICT, business models, law and summary of business fields in which they can be implemented. The conclusion of thesis contains a procedure for the identification of enterprise resources suitable for use in the shared economy. The selection of investment strategies and managing investment funds via employing portfolio insurance methods play an important role in asset liability management. Insurance strategies are designed to limit downside risk of portfolio while allowing some participation in potential gain of upside markets. In this thesis, we provide an extensive overview and investigation, particularly on the two most prominent portfolio insurance strategies: the Constant Proportion Portfolio Insurance (CPPI) and the Option-Based Portfolio Insurance (OBPI). The aim of the thesis is to examine, analyze and compare the portfolio insurance strategies in terms of their performances at maturity, via some of their statistical and dynamical properties, and of their optimality over the maximization of expected utility criterion. This thesis presents the financial market model in continuous-time containing no arbitrage opportunies, the CPPI and OBPI strategies with definitions and properties, and the analysis of these strategies in terms of comparing their performances at maturity, of their statistical properties and of their dynamical behaviour and sensitivities to the key parameters during the investment period as well as at the terminal date, with both formulations and simulations. Therefore, we investigate and compare optimal portfolio strategies which maximize the expected utility criterion. As a contribution on the optimality results existing in the literature, an extended study is provided by proving the existence and uniqueness of the appropriate number of shares invested in the unconstrained allocation in a wider interval.

The purpose of this essay is to investigate if it is eective to switch strategies for elevators during one day in an oce building. This essay describes some of the strategies in use today, followed by a comparison and analysis of two of the strategies described. We have also implemented optimizations to one of these strategies. From our test results we can conclude that our optimized strategy worked and produced better results on average waiting time and total traveling time than the two strategies we previously implemented and that it is not necessarily eective to completely change strategies but change parts of them depending on the trac ow.
Syftet med denna rapport ar att undersoka om det ar eektivt att byta strategi for hissar i en kontorsbyggnad under en dags olika trakoden. Forst beskrivs nagra av de vanligaste strategierna, vilket foljs av en jamforelse och analys av tva av dessa. For att kunna jamfora dessa strategier har en implementation av ett program som simulerar en byggnad med hissar gjorts. I programmet anvands sedan dessa strategier for att ta fram testresultat. Den mest eektiva av dessa tva strategier har optimerats och jamforts ytterligare med de tidigare resultaten. Testresultaten visar att den optimerade strategin var den mest eektiva med avseende pa genomsnittsvantetiden och den totala genomsnittsrestiden, och att det inte ar nodvandigt att helt byta strategi under dagen, men att det lonar sig att optimera delar av den, beroende pa trakodet

This paper investigates the efficiency of known elevator control strategies by simulating these in an own made apartment simulator. Efficiency will be determined by the lowest product of the energy consumption (Watt/second), average waiting time, average transfer time and the maximum waiting time of a passenger, which is the output by the simulator. The apartment simulator will simulate the elevator behavior, according to a respective control strategy, and the passenger flow on each respective floor in a specific test scenario. In this test scenario, passengers always travel either to the ground floor or to their respective home floor to simulate an apartment complex on a workday. The outcome of the investigation was that a control strategy that would prioritize elevator orders, i.e. calls made from inside the elevator, remember calls and collect passengers that are on route was the most efficient, both in terms of low energy consumption and passenger satisfaction (low transit and waiting times).

Hive is a board game for two players in which the players uses several kinds of pieces represented by different bug species to encircle the opposing players Queen Bee. There are many strategies focusing on different points of the game. To win, a good strategy is needed and in order to develop a good strategy, a wide understanding of the game is required. This project explores the components involved in Hive strategy and resulted in a comparison of an offensive and a defensive strategy by creating an AI and letting it play the game against itself using the two strategies with small modifications. Due to the nature of the game and limitations in the AI, the majority of the games played resulted in a draw. Out of 48 games played, the defensive strategy won four and the offensive only one. The results show that the defensive strategy developed for this project is superior to the offensive one. This also shows that to break a defensive strategy such as circling, it is required to plan many moves ahead.
Hive är ett brädspel för två spelare där spelarna använder ett antal pjäser representerade av olika småkryp för att försöka omringa motspelarens Drottning. Det finns många strategier som fokuserar på olika punkter inom spelet. För att vinna behövs en bra strategi, och för att kunna utveckla en bra strategi så behövs bred förståelse av spelet. Detta projekt utforskar de olika delar som är involverade inom Hive-strategi och resulterade i en jämförelse av en offensiv och en defensiv strategi genom skapandet av ett AI som sedan sattes att spela mot sig själv given de två strategierna med ett fåtal modifikationer. Till följd av spelets uppbyggnad samt begränsningar i AI:t så resulterade majoriteten av matcherna i oavgjort. Den defensiva strategin vann fyra av matcherna och den offensiva en utav de 48 spelade. Resultatet visar att den defensiva strategin utvecklad för det här projektet är överlägsen den mer offensiva strategin. Detta visar också att för att besegra en defensivt fokuserad strategi, såsom skapandet av cirklar, så måste man planera många steg framåt.

A fundamental question in biology is how cooperation and especially altruism evolves in nature. There is debate as to whether altruism evolves by individual or group selection and if kin selection is the key explanation. Recent research in evolutionary robotics has provided some evidence that altruism emerges in populations of evolving robot controllers. A set of experiments is presented here that evolve heterogeneous, but related, populations of simulated abstract robot controllers with a biologically inspired implicit fitness function based simply on 'eating' enough to survive. In predator-prey simulations, an internal fitness function that is implicit in the selection of individuals is implemented. Predators are paired in a series of trials where they interact to 'consume' the prey and those that survive are selected to reproduce and proceed to the next generation. When individual level selection is implemented, true artificial altruism emerges naturally, where an individual sacrifices its own 'life' so as to allow a related robot to survive. The altruistic trait evolves in situations where there is a high probability that neither of a pair would be successful if both attempt to survive. When situated communication is available, it is used by a robot to claim the prey once located, signalling to the other robot to behave altruistically. Under 'breeding pair' level selection where a pair of robots are required to survive together, they cooperate to ensure that both are successful and when situated communication is available, it is used by the robots to signal that the prey has been located, increasing the amount of collaboration in the population. In selecting for competition, where the robots are not allowed to survive as a pair, in addition to competing, the robots also act altruistically to achieve the goal of only one survivor.

There is a great interest in the synthesis of fluorinated aromatic and heterocyclic compounds, which have a range of applications in the pharmaceutical industry. Many common routes to these compounds, however, are low yielding and or/expensive. This thesis is concerned with novel methods for the synthesis of fluoro-aromatics and fluoro-pyrazoles using conventional fluorinating agents, such as Selectfluor™, as well as using elemental fluorine and the flow reactor technology developed in Durham. Firstly, elemental fluorine was used to fluorinate a range of aromatics containing electron-donating substituents, using both batch and flow methods. These methods often afforded the desired compound but with little selectivity and low conversion from the starting materials. Following on from this, ipso fluoro-deboronation techniques using Selectfluor™, were employed to improve the selectivity and yields of the reaction and, in many cases, the desired mono-fluorinated arylfluoride could be accessed in good yield. A range of aryl boronic acid derivatives were explored as the substrate and the results showed that trifluoroborate salts were the most useful substrate. The ipso fluoro-deboronation of heterocyclic boronic acid derivatives was also investigated and showed some promising results. The synthesis of 4-fluoropyrazoles was investigated using three methods. Initially, a two-step process, where the 2-fluoro-1,3-diketone was synthesised and isolated and subsequently reacted with hydrazine, was employed. This allowed a range of 4-fluoropyrazoles to be obtained in high yield and purity. Secondly, a telescoped two-step continuous flow process was employed which did not require isolation of the intermediate 2-fluoro-1,3-diketone. This reaction gave good yields and required less solvent with significantly lower reaction times than the two-step process. Thirdly, C4 mono- and di-fluorination of 3,5-disubstituted pyrazoles was investigated using Selectfluor™ and elemental fluorine. This method gave low conversion from the starting material (50–60 %) but the desired 4-fluoropyrazoles and novel 4,4-difluoropyrazoles could be isolated.

This thesis is concerned with the use of kinetic resolution strategies for the preparation of enantiomerically pure materials. Chapter 1 introduces kinetic resolution. The limitations of conventional kinetic resolutions are described and the methods used to overcome these limitations are discussed. Chapter 2 presents a double kinetic resolution strategy where the recovered reactant from the first kinetic resolution is used as starting material in a second kinetic resolution. In the second kinetic resolution the major enantiomer present in the starting material is the faster reacting enantiomer. Application of this double kinetic resolution strategy to the Sharpless epoxidation is shown to enable enhanced product enantiomeric excesses to be obtained. Chapter 3 presents an alternative double kinetic resolution strategy where the product from the first kinetic resolution is used as starting material in a second kinetic resolution. In the second kinetic resolution the major enantiomer present in the starting material is the faster reacting enantiomer. Application of this double kinetic resolution strategy using lipase mediated esterification and hydrolysis reactions is shown to enable enhanced product yields to be obtained. Chapter 4 describes the preparation of an enantiomerically pure 2-substituted monoprotected propan-1,3-diol derivative via combination of an asymmetric synthesis and a kinetic resolution. Chapter 5 describes the preparation of the pheromone sulcatol in enantiomerically pure form via combination of an asymmetric synthesis and a kinetic resolution. Chapter 6 presents an investigation into the structure of lithium(α-methylbenzyl)- benzyl amide. Chapter 7 describes an attempted dynamic kinetic resolution of 2-substituted monoprotected propan-1,3-diol derivatives. Chapter 8 describes an attempted preparation of the iron crotonyl complex E-[(η5-C5H5)Fe(CO)(PPh3)(COCH=CHCH3)] in enantiomerically pure form via enzymic kinetic resolution.

It is generally presupposed that the shapes and mechanisms encountered in nature have evolved in such a way as to maximize the robustness of a species. However, most such optimization problems arising in biology are sufficiently complex that it is neither clear what is being optimized, nor what are the relevant constraints. We here consider a number of natural fluid transport systems that may be framed in terms of constrained optimization problems. We first examine natural drinking strategies. We classify the drinking strategies of a broad range of creatures according to the principal forces involved, and present physical pictures for each style. Simple scaling arguments are developed and tested against existing data. While suction is the most common drinking strategy, various alternative styles have evolved among creatures whose morphological, physiological and environmental constraints preclude it. Many small creatures rely on relatively subtle capillary effects for fluid uptake. Particular attention is given to nectar drinking strategies. Nectar drinkers must feed quickly and efficiently due to the threat of predation. While the sweetest nectar offers the greatest energetic rewards, the sharp increase of viscosity with sugar concentration makes it the most difficult to transport. An optimal sugar concentration is thus expected for which the energy intake rate is maximized. An extensive data set indicates that the sugar concentration that optimizes energy transport depends exclusively on the drinking technique employed. We identify three nectar drinking techniques: active suction, capillary suction, and viscous dipping and rationalize the reported optimal concentrations for each through consideration of the appropriate constrained optimization problem. Blood flow in vertebrates and phloem flow in plants are known to be optimized for efficient transport of oxygen and sugar, respectively. Efficient transport of material is similarly advantageous in engineered transport systems such as traffic and wireless networks. We thus develop a general framework for determining the concentration that maximizes the material flow in a number of transport systems.

Political resistance is manifested in a variety of ways, including violent and nonviolent methods. Though violence and nonviolence are often treated as analytically distinct phenomena, this dissertation argues that there is value in understanding how the methods are related, and how underlying factors lead to the use of one over the other. There are many resistance groups which use a combination of both violent and nonviolent tactics, and only by examining these methods in conjunction with one another can we more fully understand their use. To understand the efficacy of jointly examining violent and nonviolent tactics, this dissertation addresses the topic from three primary perspectives. The introductory chapter offers the primary questions and puzzles this dissertation will explore. Following that, chapter two, is the first primary perspective to be addressed: the individual level. The arguments in chapter two revolve around personal networks, and the characteristics of those networks that impact views on the use of nonviolence by violent groups. Chapter three takes a state and environmental perspective, and identifies factors unique to the state and their impact on the likelihood of violence and nonviolence. Chapter four examines organizations as the unit of analysis, and inter-organizational characteristics are assessed for their impact on the use of nonviolence by violent groups. The concluding chapter brings together the insights gained from the empirical chapters, and offers suggestions for future efforts. Overall, I find that violent and nonviolent tactics share underlying correlates that impact their use, and that their joint examination offers insights on group behavior otherwise unavailable. A unified approach to the range of conflict methods offers new insight and understanding to conflict and conflict processes.

Liquidation strategies consider the problem of minimising transaction costs occurring in a portfolio liquidation. Transaction costs are the difference between current market value and the realised value after the liquidation. A strategy to follow to perform a liquidation is especially important to institutional investors due the large size of their trades. Large trades can have a significant effect on the price of a security which can impact the realised returns of the liquidation. These models solve for trading trajectories that maximise this. The models investigated do this in a mean-variance framework where the expected return of the strategy is constrained by its variance and the investors risk preference. Parameters used in liquidity functions are estimated for securities on the South African JSE Securities Exchange. The effects of security liquidity, volatility, stock correlation and length of liquidation horizon on the optimal strategy are investigated. There is little or no existing literature that attempts to model these functions in the South African market. Due to the smaller size of the South African market as well as the number of thinly traded shares compared to most markets studied in the literature, many securities are highly illiquid. We investigate relationships between firm size and daily traded value and these liquidity parameters. General rules are presented to help traders improve a liquidation strategy without the need to estimate all parameters needed to calculate an optimal strategy using one of these models.

The thesis compares two contrasting strategies employed with the aim of combating particular forms of racism within contemporary Britain. Both are assessed as political strategies in their own right and placed within the broader context of reformist and revolutionary political traditions. The sociology of social movements is examined critically, as are Marxist and post-Marxist writings on the role of human agency within social structures and on the nature of social movements. The history of the Anti Nazi League (ANL) in the late 1970s and its opposition to the National Front is considered as an example of anti-racist social movement based on the Trotskyist model of the United Front. The degree to which the Anti Nazi League corresponded to such a model is analysed as are the potential broader applications for such a strategy. The strategy with which the ANL is compared is the development of anti-racist and equal opportunities policies within local government in the 1980s, primarily by Labour-controlled local authorities. The theory of the local state and the political phenomenon of municipal socialism are discussed, specifically the role of various groups operating in and around local authorities in the formation and implementation of anti-racist policy and practice. Following this general discussion, two case studies in each of the areas of local authority housing, education and employment are explored to consider in depth the problems of specific anti-racist policies. In summation the efficacy of the two strategies are considered as parts of wider political currents in tandem with their declared specific objectives.

This thesis explores the subject of titanium milling and identifies the need for development of titanium milling strategies to address the key process limitations of chatter and tool wear. These subjects are typically studied in isolation and little work has previously been undertaken on titanium milling dynamics. Titanium is often perceived as difficult to machine as the very properties such as high strength at high temperature and low thermal conductivity that make it an attractive engineering material can cause rapid tool wear and limit process parameters. Titanium alloys are increasingly popular within the aerospace industry due to the high strength to weight ratios and titanium and carbon fibre composites have replaced many steel and aluminium components within aerostructures. Titanium is still seen by many as expensive to process and there is not the same degree of understanding and process optimisation within the machining industry as there is for aluminium and steel alloys. The literature review considers both advances in titanium tool wear mechanisms and research into machining dynamics. From the literature review three research hypotheses are developed around the knowledge gaps pertaining to titanium milling stability and process optimisation. The limitations on milling performance and productivity are considered and three areas are identified where the research could be advanced to improve titanium milling productivity through manipulation of parameters and tool geometry, these areas are pocketing strategies, special tooling geometries and process damping. A method for controlling radial immersion for pocketing strategies is developed and it is proven that through control of parameters and toolpaths that tool life and productivity can be optimised and controlled. A study is then undertaken into the performance and modelling of variable helix end mills to explore the hypothesis that the tools will outperform standard and variable pitch cutters and that the performance can be modelled. As part of the validation process an analysis of the linearity of machine tool dynamics is undertaken and it is demonstrated that under speed and load, spindle and machine tool frequency responses can differ from those measured in the static condition. The final part of the research investigates process damping performance and sensitivity to cutting tool geometry and feed rates. A method for evaluating process damping performance is developed and through optimisation of tool geometry and feed per tooth increases in productivity up to 17 fold are demonstrated. A method is then presented for tuning machine tool dynamics to optimise process damping performance and stabilise sub optimum tooling and machine tools. The three core strands of the thesis are brought together and demonstrated in an aerospace case study. Through application of the techniques developed in the thesis a titanium aerostructural component is machined at the same rates as an equivalent steel component and at less than 50% of the planned titanium milling process time.

This thesis examines children's arithmetic strategies and their relation to the concepts of commutativity and associativity. Two complementary methods were used in this research: empirical studies and computational models. Empirical studies were carried out to identify the strategies children used for solving problems like 3 + 4, and 3 + 4 + 7, and the conceptual knowledge associated with them. Their understanding of subtraction problems where the minuend is less than the subtrahend (e.g. 6-8) was also considered. A study with 105 subjects revealed a variety of strategies and information about children's knowledge of commutativity and associativity. Four levels of performance of commutativity were also identified. A longitudinal study was carried out with 12 children in order to obtain details of children's changes in strategy, and to double check the results obtained in the main study. The strategies observed to be used by children over a 20 month period parallel those found in previous studies, which show a general transition to more efficient methods. However, the longitudinal study revealed that development of such arithmetic strategies is a slow process. Furthermore, the studies indicated that knowledge of commutativity is a prerequisite for associativity. Models of the observed strategies have been implemented in the form of production rules in a computer program called PALM. The process of implementation highlighted features of children's problem solving that had not been 'detected during the studies. In addition to models that describe the space of strategies, a model of learning has been implemented for the transition from procedural knowledge of commutativity to that of associativity. The model is capable of generalizing its inbuilt knowledge, for instance, its ability to solve 2-term arithmetic expressions, to allow it to solve more complex problems, such as 3-term arithmetic expressions. A further model has been constructed for learning arithmetic strategies that are more efficient than those already represented in the program. It learns specific rules by adding conditions for efficient problem solving to its previous general rules.

Magistrinio darbo tikslui įgyvendinti keliami tokie uždaviniai: išskirti žinių ekonomikos ir industrinės ekonomikos skirtumus; aprašyti strateginės vadybos svarbą žinių ekonomikai; pateikti Lisabonos strategijos atsiradimo motyvus bei įgyvendinimo perspektyvas; apibūdinti atnaujintos Lisabonos strategijos atsiradimo priežastis; aprašyti Lisabonos strategijos įgyvendinimo perspektyvas Lietuvoje; išanalizuoti Lisabonos strategijos užimtumo, mokslo ir švietimo politikos užsibrėžtų uždavinių įgyvendinimą žinių ekonomikos aspektu. Naudojant bendruosius analitiniai ir specialiuosiu metodus, prieita išvada, kad Lisabonos strategijos iškelti uždaviniai tik iš dalies atitinka žinių ekonomikos strategavimo kriterijus. The theme of the master thesis is topical for the whole Europe and Lithuania as well. The future of the European Union is related to the establishement of the society and economy based on knowledge. Practical and theoretical knowledge gained during studies period are used to write this work, which is called “Competitive Strategies of Real-Estate Companies’ ”. The purpose of work is to find out what competitive strategies are used by the real estate companies’. The first part of the work presents theoretical aspects of competitive strategies, including corporate competitive strategies, also other competitive strategies of companies’ such as competitive strategies of companies‘ by the part of market they take. In the second part of the work there is represented results of previous research, where variuos authors analyse competition and competitive strategies in real estate market. The last section represents conclusions of the work, which shows that diferentiation strategy is the most dominating competitive strategy in the market of real estate in Kaunas.
