Streszczenie:
This research paper responds to the contemporary calls made by theorists Jean Baudrillard and Marshall McLuhan to interrogate media with art to act as a respite from the ego trance of what McLuhan called, Narcissus-narcosis. Baudrillard’s and McLuhan’s criticisms contextualise art as respite from media, whereby art can show the charm of a strange world to relieve the deceiving, deluding nature of media. Art can turn away from the content of media and interact with its structure and configuration instead, and by doing so it can immunise individuals and society. In both of my ongoing MFA projects, Romantic Grass of the Week and Wireless Psychics Experiments #1- 10, art is envisaged as an inoculation to save us from being totally absorbed in the virtual. This injection performs, plays with media structures, and translates them into different forms and artefacts. The work continues as our immunisation then becomes embodied in acts of divining.

This collection of nonfiction essays explores one woman’s journey of reentering the world of dating after getting divorced in her forties. Neither an exposé of online dating practices nor a dating how-to manual, these essays strive instead to examine the amusing, poignant, and often tragic ways in which we humans are aligned in our frailty, our brokenness, and ultimately in our redemptive search for love and higher meaning in life. They are also a reminder that there is much that is intrinsically valuable about this search, even when it is not ultimately successful.

Hannah Arendt is often read as author of the crisis. Being born in the short 20th century, bearing witness and even living herself, while she was among men, many of the catastrophes that had place at the world s stage. As a thinker, she made her systematic meditation over the totalitarian phenomenon the starting point for many works which intention resided on trying to understand the world, and, from this comprehension, to be able to reconcile herself with it. Comprehending the totalitarian regime as a radical novelty, that embarrass our categories of thought, as well as our ability to act in the world and discourse about the human affairs, Arendt ended up approximating this terrible event with another one, which essence itself is the novelty: the Revolution. Understanding the Revolution as a foundation of a Constitution of Freedom and of a New World Order, the author faces the difficult challenge of conciliating things that seem to be completely contradictory in contemporaneity: the capacity of political action to start something entirely new and the necessity to stabilize the public space where action must happen. It is at the intersection of this unresolvable dichotomy that this work intends to explore fundamental concepts of the Arendtian thought, as authority, freedom, action, power, among others. With them I will try to understand the immersion that Arendt do to the depths of the past to give new dignity to the political field, in a time where the humans beings take, each passing day, less responsibility for the world and for the possibilities it reserves.

Among the identified strategies are the symbolic use of colours, the imagery related to light and shadow, the adoption of a particular perspective, the fusion of abstract and concrete. These techniques are seen as attempts to respond to the difficulty of representing and communicating war experience.

The aim of this study is to examine ways of writing experiences of the strange and different, experiences of the other in his or her otherness and experiences of suffering. The study focuses possibilities and limits for the writing of these experiences and aims at finding a tangible way of writing literature. Part of the aim of this study is to elaborate a proposal for a way of writing experiences of the strange and different, experiences of the other in his or her otherness and experiences of suffering.     The material for the study consists of three different approaches to literature, in which theories on literature or analyses of literary works are presented. This material is initially analysed in separate analyses in which conceptions, strategies and methods for writing experiences of the strange and different, the other and suffering are identified. Secondly, the material is analysed in a comparative analysis, aimed at finding similarities and differences between the approaches but above all to let the approaches supplement and challenge each other. The second part of the study consists of the elaboration of a proposal for a way of writing based on the result of the first analyses.    The result of the study is a way of writing in which the limitations and inabilities of literature are used as critical and creative resources. These limitations and inabilities consists of the violence of the literary naming and designation, and the boundaries between identities that render a complete insight in the experiences of someone else impossible. With these limitations and inabilities as a starting point, conceptions, strategies and methods for writing literature are distinguished and developed. A movement between nearness and distance both in content and form is identified as a fruitful way of writing that can mediate experiences and avoid to arrange what is strange and unfamiliar in these experiences into the familiar, as well as and openness for a manifoldness of possibilities. As distinct way of writing is distinguished in the metaphor, a literary device in which the movement between nearness and distance is made concrete. In the elaboration of a proposal for a way of writing these conceptions, strategies and methods provided the framework for a way of writing which doesn’t reduce experiences or close the literary text for a multitude of possibilities.

Streszczenie:
The main contention of this thesis is that traditional IR approaches, ethics of migration literature and a part of the poststructural scholarship, either implicitly but also often explicitly, are based on an exclusionary, hierarchical understanding of the Other and an Us versus Them ordering of society even when they purport to contradict it. As such, they engender a collective ethos, which, despite these approaches’ initial intentions or pronounced humanitarian commitments, does not take into account the stranger Other beyond a lordship/bondage view on one hand and allow for exacerbating the violence towards the Other/ stranger on the other. This exacerbation can be noted when looking at current hospitality practices (detention camps; “closed hospitality centres”; state sanctioned illegal push-backs of refugees; “fortress Europe” kind of policies, etc.). Whilst accepting this is not a new problem (movement of individuals, post-conflict waves of refugees, liminal figures in societies and communities have always been present and have constituted parts of on-going theoretical discussions in IR, bringing out theoretical tensions and difficulties), the thesis argues that there are certain novelties to be found: namely, a strengthened overarching security narrative and the resulting militarisation of the treatment of strangers. Against this background, my thesis notes the relative absence of any ethically engaged discussion around hospitality and finds it problematic. It proposes the reconsideration in IR of an umbrella term naming the liminal abject Other. It then argues for the need to reconsider the Levinasian understanding of the ethical responsibility towards the singular and multiple Others through the concept of fraternity. Finally, it revisits the Derridean theorisation of hospitality, i.e., hospitality as an opening up of theory to the “missing” or the Other in Western thought beyond an “Us/ Them” understanding, through an affirmative reading of autoimmunity, arguing that the autoimmunitary ethics of hospitality can enact the ethical responsibility by crossing the threshold of undecidability towards an opening to the Other.

This research examines the experiences, expectations and concerns of post-war Greek migrants in an interview and focus group setting. The central question of inquiry is whether Australia has been -the lucky country- for Greek migrants after approximately fifty years of living in Australia. Overall, of the total number of Greek migrants who participated in the research, 78% believe Australia is the lucky country, whereas 22% did not. Some of the overall reasons why Greeks believe Australia is not the lucky country include racism, qualifications were not initially recognised, and Greece is now perceived as being economically superior to Australia. Some of the main limitations of the present study include : the small number of subjects recruited, advertisement design, ambiguous definition of the lucky country, and the study was only concentrated in one geographical section of Sydney. Recommendations are included to assist future researchers alleviate some of the problem areas.

Streszczenie:
Networks and the relationships embedded in them are critical determinants of how people communicate, form beliefs, and behave. E-commerce platforms such as Amazon and eBay have made actions of "strangers" more observable to others. More recently, social media websites such as Facebook and Google Plus have created networks of "friends", and the actions of these friends have become more visible than ever before to consumers. This dissertation develops an analytical model to examine how social learning occurs in different types of networks. Specifically, I examine the pure-strategy perfect Bayesian equilibrium of observational learning in a friend-network vs. a stranger-network. In this model, each individual makes an adopt-or-reject decision about a product after receiving a private signal regarding the underlying quality of the product and observing past actions of other individuals in the network. Grounded on the homophily theory in sociology, the degree of network heterogeneity defines the key difference between a friend-network and a stranger-network. I show a threshold effect of network size regarding which network carries more valuable information: when the network size is small, a friend-network carries more valuable information than a stranger-network does. But when the network size gets larger, a stranger-network dominates a friend-network. This suggests two competing effects of network homogeneity on social learning: individual preference effects and social conforming effects. I also test key implications from theoretical results using experiments to demonstrate internal validity and enhance insights on social learning in networks. I found that experimental results are in line with predictions from the theoretical model.

Streszczenie:
The year 2014 will mark the centennial of the outbreak of World War I in August 1914. This historic anniversary will likely provoke several discussions from all fields in the humanities concerning the Great War's significance on contemporary culture through history, visual art, and in the case of this essay: literature. In light of this event, any serious discussion among scholars should undeniably begin with how the war continues to be represented today through a thorough, contemporary analysis of its many key literary texts. This essay will examine, in this regard, how past and contemporary discourses in literary theory-primarily concerned with how an individual combatant subject attempts to construct and understand their own traumatic experiences through poetic and literary discourse-can continue to incite discussion on why literature of the Great War and its influential role in defining how it has come to be understood in our cultural memory remains relevant even today. Under the guiding influence of Paul Fussell's classic The Great War and Modern Memory, I will discuss how three important works-a poetry collection, a memoir, and a modern work of historical fiction-all contribute to how the war has become represented as a tragic rupture in history that reversed the idea of human progress and left an entire generation disillusioned in its aftermath, regardless of the historical veracity of this legacy. The texts I will be examining include: select poems of Wilfred Owen, Goodbye to All That by Robert Graves, and Regeneration by Pat Barker. In addition to this, I will conclude with an analysis of how a contemporary reading of these texts can contribute to a larger discussion of the crisis of historicity in our current post-modern cultural landscape.

Streszczenie:
Designing and making games is complex, chaotic and difficult, and the relationship between design and the game development process is not well understood. The myth of predictive design control and fallacies of misplaced concreteness have confused understandings of game design, both in theory and practice. To resolve these problems, I use Dewey’s theory of inquiry, both as a method of philosophical investigation and as a way of understanding the process of game development. I also use experience-focused philosophies, embodied theories of meaning, tacit knowing and theories of design to examine the characteristics of games, game experiences and game design. These theories are used to identify important constituents in the game design situation, and to address the mix of formal, aesthetic and creative elements that defines game design. In doing so, I rely on my experience as a game designer along with analysis of several game development projects, to investigate the nature of indeterminacy and design coherence in the game development process. This thesis shows that game design is a complex process that inherently involves at least 40 sources of indeterminacy. It also shows that the formal aspects of a game co-develop with the skilled performance of integrative design work in a social design situation. In this project-specific collaborative learning process, the meaning of design concepts can easily be disrupted in the solving of problems and coordination of different discourses. The co- development process allows designers to expand their rational capacity while coping with emergent complexity (of both games and their making).

Streszczenie:
This study investigated the development of trust between strangers interacting via avatars in virtual worlds. The first part of the study analyzed perceived trustworthiness based on the visual appearance of avatars; the second part makes observations of two strangers self-disclosing information via avatars in a virtual world; the third part analyzed an experimental situation of two individuals interacting via avatars, where avatar appearance was changed and participants were recruited based on their experience with interacting with others via avatars. Findings showed that perceived trustworthiness does vary based on the visual appearance of the avatar. A positive relationship was found for self-disclosure and experience, in that those who have previously chosen to participate in a virtual world were more likely to share more detailed information about themselves. Non-significant differences in self-disclosure were found for avatar appearance; however, experience in using virtual worlds was significantly different for the willingness to share information before engaging in a task: experienced participants shared more information than inexperienced participants. This suggests that self-disclosure might be influenced by appearance at the point of formation in that the experienced are willing to overlook the avatar, and less so when there are other sources of information to base trust-behavior on (Altman & Taylor, 1973; Nowak & Rauh, 2006). Recommendations were made for modifications for similar experiments trying to validate an objective measure of trust, and for continued research in the development of trust between strangers interacting via avatars

Hwang, Namduk. "The God of all the Earth : contextual theology in a globalizing world : the example of Korea". Thesis, University of Exeter, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/12302.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Korea became a multicultural society through the influx of foreigners: migrant workers, international married couples, foreign students, and naturalized citizens. This social change challenges Korean churches to reflect on their mission styles and theology. The theology of the welcomed stranger is a theological response to the Korean context, requiring a profound understanding of globalization and migration. It focuses mainly on the lives of migrant workers in Korea and suggests a model of settlement for both Koreans and migrant workers for peaceful living while exploring a community of toleration, friendship, and harmony for co-existence and emphasizing social justice for the poor and marginalized. Interfaith dialogue between Korean churches and migrant workers is also an important facet of this theology. The introduction outlines my personal life story in relation to Minjung theology and the theology of the wanderer as preconditions to the theology of the welcomed stranger. Chapter One explains the theological responses to globalization and the context of globalization and migration while researching the role of international economic institutions and international laws for migrant workers and their families. Chapter Two explores the situation of migrant workers in Korea, especially women, while highlighting the work of Korean NGOs working for migrant workers and showing the viewpoints of NGO staff on globalization. Chapter Three reflects on Minjung theology and suggests its new responsibility in the era of globalization. Chapter Four considers the theology of the wanderer, comparing it with Minjung theology. Chapter Five outlines the theology of the welcomed stranger and argues for the virtue of a multicultural society, challenging Korean churches to understand the social reality of migrant workers and accepting them as “welcomed stranger.” Chapter Six emphasizes interfaith dialogue and relations between Korean churches and migrant workers, examining the religious context of Korea and the historical background of the Korean church. This chapter also provides the viewpoints of NGO staff in Korea on interfaith dialogue, supporting Korean churches and migrant workers to work together for the realization of a “basic human community,” which I understand as a response to the idea of the kingdom of God.

The main purpose of this dissertation was to analyse and compare the attitudes of young people who lived in two different local contexts towards foreigners and immigrants. In the main study 36 teenagers, 17 from Bruksort and 19 from Industriort, were interviewed. Both local societies are rather small and dominated by one major industry, and a large number of the inhabitants are workers. Prospects for the future differed – in Bruksort people did not believe they had a future in the community because of the lack of jobs, while the people in Industriort felt a certain optimism in this respect, as the major industry was doing well. While Industriort had a long tradition and experience of immigration, Bruksort did not. Refugee camps were established in both societies in the early 1990s. The interviews brought up questions of attitude towards foreigners and immigrants. The analysis is also in part based on two pilot studies and an analysis of articles and letters to the editor in the local press, Industriort News and Bruksort Times during 1991-99. Two different discourses were analysed in the main study: the discourse of refugees, immigration, racism and anti-racism in the local press, and discourse of the young people´s discussions of those subjects. These two ways of talking were compared in order to discover possible patterns and changes in underlying thought figures in each town. The importance of the locality was demonstrated in the study. Young people are affected by political decisions, by demands made by adults and by the media. However young people are also being brought up in an active way by their own local society. The inhabitants of Bruksort were suspicious of strangers and of “the other”. However, in Industriort this sort of suspicion was only temporarily acted out towards the refugees in the camp and quickly dissipated because the refugees were integrated into the society. Also, a number of the young inhabitants in Industriort had an immigrant background themselves. The gender difference is notable; girls and boys narrated divergent versions of the events that had taken place involving the inhabitants and the refugees. The girls had a more emphatic way of reasoning about refugees and of the situation immigrants´ of than the boys. Boys on the other hand had been in conflict with the people from the refugee-camp and present juridical and economic arguments about Swedish immigration policies. It is concluded that creating meeting places where people from different ethnic backgrounds can get together and learn to know each other is of crucial importance. Also, the fact that young people seemed to be unaware of the anti-racist projects arranged by the school in Bruksort and the youth centre in Industriort a few years prior to the interviews, and that most of the teenagers interviewed felt that school had done too little, if anything, regarding the discussion of such matters as refugees, immigration and racism, emphasises the importance of more deliberate and longterm strategies as opposed to short term projects.

Abstract The fox spirit has the universal image of being tricky and the image of ghost is gloomy and terrifying, no matter in eastern or western culture. However, no one has ever encountered with a fox spirit or a ghost for sure. Then how do the writers describe the things they have never experienced? In Aesop’s Fables, which is a common introductory literature for children, there is an impressive character, the fox, the smart, witty, wicked and tricky animal. The image of fox stays in children’s mind firmly. Listening to ghost stories is one of the favorite exciting experience in childhood. Children are curious about the ghost stories and are at the same time afraid of listening to them because of the fear of overwhelming gloomy darkness. The making of images, like tricky fox spirit and the gloomy ghost, is artificial. If this assumption is true, does every maker think of an identical image? Do Chinese writers agree with foreign writers on the ideas of fox spirit and ghost? Human, who called themselves the lord of all creatures, always makes the judge of good and evil. However, can human be detached when he makes the judgment? Considering from another perspective, if a certain convention is subverted, will the roles meet conflicts? These questions are good research topics. Sung-ling Pu, the writer of Strange Stories from a Chinese studio, provided a total different perspective from the convention. He has subverted the images of fox spirit being tricky, and ghost being gloomy. This subversion carries some implied meanings, which the writer intended to express. In this thesis, the research attempt to give an interpretation which is clear and close to the writer’s intentions through analyzing and generalizing the types, characters, images, themes, and traits of fox spirit and ghost stories in Strange Stories from a Chinese studio.

This thesis provides a theoretical account of the concept of hospitality so as to explore the cultural clash and identity conflict experienced by the immigrant characters with ethnic background in Zadie Smith’s White Teeth. Hospitality is a virtuous social code of providing necessities to unknown strangers, treating them as guests or friends without hostility. However, such a generous mechanism conceals a power structure. To be recognized as a guest is a means of obeying the laws of the host. Hospitality in this sense is conditional. Therefore, the dichotomy of self-other or host-guest is unable to sufficiently welcome strangers but highlights their identities as the foreigners. The thesis is divided into five chapters. Chapter One broaches relevant critical accounts of White Teeth along with a brief introduction to the text, discussing the issue of immigration in light of hospitality to consider the problematic encounter between metropolitan indigenes and transnational immigrants. Chapter Two elaborates on the power structure of hospitality discussed by Jacques Derrida. By looking into Smith’s text, treating the immigrants as guests still implies they are not “real” British, which reveals that the white Britons still exercise their power over minorities. Chapter Three keeps following Derrida’s deconstructive viewpoint about the interchangeability of host-guest paradigm, discussing the possibility of making an immigrant guest become a British host. Chapter Four argues that the restricted mode of host-guest paradigm forces immigrants to choose either integration or marginalization—to be a recognized insider or repulsed outsider, violating the unselfish spirit of hospitality. Chapter Five summarizes the above-mentioned aspects, arguing that Smith’s novel is not a naïve celebration of multiculturalism, but an introspective mirror reflecting the inextricable relationship between self and other in a mobile era.

Streszczenie:
The years after the end of World War II were characterized by the constant arrival of new Canadians. Between 1946 and 1960, Canada opened its doors to over two million immigrants and approximately 13 per cent of them were German. The first ten years of German immigration to Canada were dominated by the arrival of ethnic Germans. Ethnic Germans, or Volksdeutsche, were German speaking immigrants who were born in countries other than the Germany of 1939. This thesis explores the identity of these ethnic German immigrants. It has frequently been noted that German immigrants to Canada were inordinately quick to adapt to their new society. As a result, studies of German immigrants in Canada have tended to focus on the degree and speed with which they adopted the social framework of the dominant society. The present work seeks to place the ethnic German experience in the context of rapidly changing Canadian social and economic realities. Ethnic Germans have a history that had subjected them to rapid changes in political, family, and economic reality. They came to a Canadian society that was increasingly urbanized, with a growing consumer orientation and accompanied by changes in self-perception. Using archival sources and a variety of personal stories in the form of memoirs, personal interviews, letters to newspapers and published materials, the thesis explores the processes of ethnic German identification. Conceptually the argument follows Frederic Barth's suggestions that culture should be thought of as a process. Ethnic identity should not be thought of as static but rather as a constant process of social construction. The coherence of features of ethnic identity is constantly in flux, and it is these processes that should engage the student of culture. The processes of labelling, memory, socialization and the social construction of family, work, and associations provide the structure for the chapters that follow. For ethnic Germans, each of these processes became arenas where identities were formed and coherence was enhanced or discarded in favour of new social realities.

This study examines the relationships between intercultural theory, German Studies (in South Africa) and post-war migration literature written in Germany. Migration literature as intercultural literature, and German Studies adopting an intercultural philosophy are thus associated by an intercultural aspect that also links both to a global network of intercultural relations. The study places emphasis on relationships rather than areas of research. This means that areas of research are looked at in terms of how they relate to other areas of research and other contexts. The underlying idea is that intercultural understanding can be taught at an academic level as an avenue towards building intercultural competence. At the same time, theories of an intercultural understanding should be informed by experiences that helped build intercultural competence.

This diploma thesis is devoted to Václav Majer (January 22, 1904 - January 25, 1972) and his public work, particularly in the period of the Third Republic of Czechoslovakia. Václav Majer was a social democratic politician and he was a leader of the right wing within the Czechoslovak Social Democracy. The main issue which was being discussed inside the Social Democratic Party at that time was the question of cooperation between Social Democrats and Communists. Majer was a main proponent of independent policy of the Social Democratic Party. Sometimes it is hard to analyze the meaning and the course of various political affairs without knowing their roots. In that case, it is necessary to study the background of these events which in many cases lies at the previous period. This is the reason why this very essay actually starts right after the Munich Agreement was negotiated and signed. This thesis informs about Majer's road to exile and his political activities during the World War II. The main interest of this thesis lies in the era of the Third Republic and informs about Majer and his policy during this very period.
