Streszczenie:
A special type of singular Stewart-Gough Platform exhibits continuous motion of one or more degrees of freedom, while all of its six or more legs are locked at fixed length. The equation describing point motion is introduced and then applied to parallel platforms. Line geometric analysis shows that all legs remain in a continuously varying linear complex, linear congruence, or quadric. Base and platform joints are restricted to lie on two congruent, skewed hyperbolids of one sheet. One of these constitutes those points on the rigid body of the platform that move on spheres, the other, those on the fixed base which constitute the sphere centres. An equivalent mechanism is developed and used to visualize the design parameters of the motion. The selection, as platform joints, of points on a line generator results in a two degree of freedom platform. Specific designs of such overconstrained mechanisms are investigated and illustrated. Line geometry is used, to explain the special relationship among the platform legs. Numerical examples are given and illustrated.

Streszczenie:
A comprehensive survey of the stream and river faunas of Stewart Island (invertebrates and fish) was undertaken between August 1987 and December 1989. In total, 113 invertebrate taxa and 12 fish species were recorded. The invertebrate fauna is characterised by a common core of taxa (Chiltonia rivertonensis, Oligochaeta, Chironomidae, Deleatidium, Zelandoperla, Zelandobius, Austroperla cyrene, Hydrobiosidae stenocerca, Hydrobiosidae, Simuliidae, and Scirtidae) and a paucity or absence of some common mainland families or genera, notably the Notonemouridae, Conoesucidae, and Archichauliodes. The fish fauna consists of diadromous species except for Galaxias vulgaris. A number of invertebrate and fish species are more widespread, or abundant, and occupy more diverse habitat types than reported in mainland studies. They include the isopod Austridotea benhami, and the fishes Galaxias argenteus, G. fasciatus and Gobiomorphus huttoni. These differences may reflect the more pristine conditions of Stewart Island streams and an absence of predatory salmonids on the island. Gut analysis of G. huttoni and G. fasciatus confirmed that they fed predominantly on benthic invertebrates and terrestrial prey items, respectively. Both species appeared to be opportunistic feeders and showed a low degree of prey selectivity. Experimental studies at six sites in the Rakeahua River system indicated that leaf litter breakdown (kamahi leaves) rates were rapid at headwater sites where feeding by shredders (principally Austroperla cyrene) was high. In contrast, breakdown rates were slower at mainstem sites even though the large detritivore/carnivore, Austridotea benhami was present. In summary, the Stewart Island freshwater fauna can be seen to possess a number of distinctive features, but the extent of these appear to be no greater than those found between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Stewart Island is unique, however, because of the apparent absence of adventive species, including trout, that are common on the mainland. Because of this and the largely pristine nature of its catchments, I suggest that greater protection should be afforded to the island's freshwater systems than is imparted by Reserve and Conservation Land status.

Abstract: This dissertation has as goal to investigate the musical performance of the American drummer Bill Stewart, detainer of a peculiar way of playing and one of the predominant jazz musicians nowadays. Continuing the research "The peculiar language of Bill Stewart on drumset", which determinate some defining elements of his performance on the instrument, this dissertation aims to identify whether those characteristic traits are similar to the approach of other drummers, which acted in the decades of 1950 and 1960, such as Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Tony Williams and Roy Haynes. The methodology utilized in this research consists of definition of the repertory, transcription of selected works, and a further comparative study. The interviews with Stewart served to cross check the information and to confirm some of the outputs of this analysis. This study allowed us to organize a comparative material that discuss if the similarities founded between the Stewart's approach and the musical language of the drummers of the preceding decades to him could be considered as his musical influences on drumset

Maria W. Stewart was the first American-born and the first African-American woman known to address a mixed audience, from 1831 to 1833, and publish her essays and speeches. The purpose of this thesis is to examine Maria W. Stewart's acts of defiance--as the first public representation of Black Feminism: demanding that white America end slavery and grant rights to black men and women, re-appropriating the hegemonic, patriarchal codes which have significant social power by exposing their inconsistencies and deconstructing their ideologies, voicing the truth about the status of African-American women in early nineteenth-century America, and challenging Black women to become entrepreneurs and (as she did) acquire an education, establish schools, and take an active role in their community.

In this research I examine artistic doubt as a way to unlace the becoming of a portrait. My interest is in the personal encounter between the painter and sitter. My muse is the sixteenth-century Italian portrait painter, Sofonisba Anguissola and through both creative practice and exegetical writing, which takes an epistolary approach, I investigate the process, mistakes and interruptions of making that can impact on portrait painting. As such doubt is positioned as caches of ontological moments.

Streszczenie:
This manuscript describes the development of an experimental NC milling machine having control over all the 6 bodily degrees of freedom of movement. The mechanism used is called a Stewart Platform. These mechanisms have a platform connected to a base by 6 variable length "legs". The Stewart Platform is considered to have good potential as a rigid 5 axis milling machine having a simpler structure than conventional machines. Platform motion is achieved by pre-calculated movements of 6 stepper motors which actuate leg mounted lead screws. These movements are controlled using microcomputer controlled electronic hardware. The development of the system progressed along several paths among which were: path synthesis methods in six dimensions, stepper motors, simultaneous open-loop control of 6 data manipulation and storage structures in software to execute the control strategies, and the development of the existing positioning machine for milling operations. The system was successfully developed to enable machining of rigid urethane foam blocks in 5 useful degrees of freedom. The envelope of movement was restricted to +/- 100mm translations and +/- 30 degree rotations. Accuracy of movement was beyond that detectable using foam. Suggestions are made for further developments, particularly for improving the machine's envelope of movement and method of actuation.

Streszczenie:
In this work, we investigate the active vibration isolation and damping of sensitive equipment. Several single-axis isolation techniques are analyzed and tested. A comparison between the sky-hook damper, integral force feedback, inertial velocity feedback and LagLead control techniques is conducted using several practical examples.

The study of single-axis systems has been developed and used to build a six-axis isolator. A six degrees of freedom active isolator based on Stewart platform has been designed manufactured and tested for the purpose of active vibration isolation of sensitive payloads in space applications. This six-axis hexapod is designed according to the cubic configuration; it consists of two triangular parallel plates connected to each other by six active legs orthogonal to each other; each leg consists of a voice coil actuator, a force sensor and two flexible joints. Two different control techniques have been tested to control this isolator :integral force feedback and Lag-Lead compensator, the two techniques are based on force feedback and are applied in a decentralized manner. A micro-gravity parabolic flight test has been clone to test the isolator in micro-gravity environment.

ln the context of this research, another hexapod has been produced ;a generic active damping and precision painting interface based on Stewart platform. This hexapod consists of two parallel plates connected to each other by six active legs configured according to the cubic architecture. Each leg consists of an amplified piezoelectric actuator, a force sensor and two flexible joints. This Stewart platform is addressed to space applications where it aims at controlling the vibrations of space structures while connecting them rigidly. The control technique used here is the decentralized integral force feedback.

Streszczenie:
Late 18th Britain was experiencing the beginnings of social unrest fueled in part by the American and French Revolutions. The established two class social system was being challenged by the emergence of a middle class seeking something more than traditional agricultural work. While they subscribed to very different philosophies of mind, both Stewart and Mill saw the solution to potential social chaos in a revised educational system that would open the doors to a peaceful development of that middle class. What the new educational system should look like was a direct function of the theory of mind held by the two protagonists. Employing an enlarged Foucaultian framework, this dissertation examines the various forces at work in transforming British society as it prepares for the unanticipated forthcoming industrial revolution.

Born in 1941 in East Belfast, Stewart Parker came to prominence as a playwright in the 1970s. When he died in 1988, he left behind him an impressive body of work which included stage plays, radio plays and screenplays. Although he came to be recognized as one of the leading theatrical stylists of his generation, his work has received little attention in academic circles and no comprehensive study has been published yet. This study looks into the quest for identity in his stage plays. First, it explores his quest for identity as a writer who was born and raised in the Northern-Irish Protestant community, but always claimed to belong to a wider Anglo-Irish theatrical tradition. This thesis seeks to show how Parker, faced with the Northern Irish crisis, committed himself to reinventing theatre all over again with new ways of showing. It also explores his quest for identity as a playwright, who claimed to be non-political, but nevertheless believed firmly in the power of drama to change perceptions, and wrote extensively about the responsibility of the artist to his own people in a time of crisis. Finally, this thesis explores the quest for individual and collective identity in his plays. Aware of the stake of the question of identity in Northern Ireland, he was the first playwright to overtly question and subvert the Unionist notion of a singular Ulster Protestant identity. This thesis shows how, rejecting the traditional binary opposition between Catholics and Protestants, British and Irish, republican and loyalist, he was devoted to create a model of wholeness on stage that would finally lead the people of Northern Ireland to acknowledge their common identity

The objective of this work is to build a testing machine for prosthesis. The machine should be able to reproduce the same dynamic and kinematics conditions applied on the prosthesis during the normal use.Numbers of amputation, and causes of amputation were collected. Different types of prosthesis were classified according to the leg prosthesis per amputation height, passive and active prosthesis, differentiated by the nature of their actuator. Most of the testing machine for the prosthesis were studied form the technological and capability prospective. Determining all the limitations of most of existing testing machines, and the needs to develop a new machine to full fill these needs were developed. Then we studied and analyzed the dynamics of the human gait and run. The equations of motion by taking into consideration the masses and moments of inertia of skeletal segments. Most of the parameters of gait were extracted. In conclusion, we have the kinematic requirements of the human center of gravity to generate 6 DOF that the testing machine should carry out to emulate the normal human gait and run.Three designs were proposed to implement the testing machine; Articulated robot arm, Cartesian manipulator, and Stewart Platform (SP). After implementing the three solutions we found the most suitable solution is the SP attached with it an artificial active hip. We have chosen the hydraulic power as it is the most suitable actuation technique for our solution knowing the required actuation forces. To help in controlling the SP motion, a novel Closed-form solution of direct Geometric model for planer and 6-6 Stewart Platform using the rotary sensors instead of liner sensors as wanted to the hydraulic actuators was developed. Sensitivity analysis was studied for that solution, and analytical calculation for computing the workspace was also developed. The conclusion from this testing machine is that we can create all the dynamics of the human body, i.e. walking or running or going up and down stairs.
In this Master of Science thesis a problem that has been a part of an ongoing project at ElektaInstrument has been examined and a solution has been suggested. The problem has been to develop a servo unit that is able to position an instrument in fivedegrees of freedom (three translational and two rotational) with high precision and that is able tohold that instrument in its position with high stiffness. The problems were solved by specifying the requirements of the servo unit and compare themwith existing concepts. The concepts were evaluated and the best concept, the Stewart-Goughplatform, was chosen and was thoroughly studied and analyzed. The analysis was conducted in two steps, the first step was to calculate the forces and the leglengths as a function of a position for a Stewart-Gough platform. The second step was to realizethe calculations and implement them in code and hardware to control physical motors and makethem behave as desired according to the calculations. The result of the first step was a MATLAB program that can calculate the inverse kinematicsand leg forces for any Stewart-Gough platform that is subjected to any force and momentumvector. The program can also iterate the calculations for a number of positions and loads for theplatform and display relevant extreme values. The result of the second step is a LabView program for simultaneous control of six motors andhardware that is able to control and drive the motors. The control system has successfully beentested on existing motors. The result of the thesis shows that the Stewart-Gough platform is a feasible solution that willmeet the specified requirements on the servo unit. During the thesis project all necessarycalculations for control of a Stewart-Gough platform has been made and the hardware needed tocontrol it has been developed. A mechanical solution has been developed simultaneously duringthe thesis project by engineers at Elekta Instrument AB and when the thesis project is complete afirst prototype of the Stewart-Gough servo unit is not far away.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the romantic thrillers of Mary Stewart, which were internationally bestselling novels in the post-war British fiction marketplace. Through my reading of Stewart, I nuance current critical perceptions of the mid-twentieth century middlebrow novel, which, I argue, is characterised in part by a self-conscious investigation of its position within the parameters of highbrow literature and popular fiction. As a critical category which is defined by its relation to literary value, I argue that works considered to be middlebrow are inherently self-reflective and metafictive, seeking to discreetly undermine the hierarchical structures which attempt to contain them. I posit the term ‘soft-metafiction’ to describe this; as opposed to ‘hard’ metafiction, which explicitly and insistently proclaims its self-awareness, soft-metafiction is involved in an understated, often sub-textual, exploration of its status as text. I argue that Stewart’s work is characterised by frequent use of intertextual reference and metafictive reflection on the nature and purpose of text as a concept. In Chapter One, I discuss Stewart’s engagement with notions of canonicity and literary value, showing how she defends the reading of middlebrow fiction against such figures as Q.D. Leavis, and how she challenges the position of women within the masculinised canon. In Chapter Two, I demonstrate how Stewart reflects upon the generic conventions of romance, fairytale, crime and gothic fiction to raise questions about gender and genre. Chapter Three explores how Stewart reflects on the nature of texts, and how they function in relation to history (both personal and national), memory, and identity. Throughout, I demonstrate Stewart’s interest in the various ways that text is categorised: generically, hierarchically and canonically. In doing so, I demonstrate that Stewart’s novels are more than, as one reviewer writes, ‘charming little love stor[ies]’: rather, they are intellectually searching, self-aware works, with a serious interest in their wider literary context. By mapping Stewart’s work in terms of the soft-metafictive, I aim to open this term up as a wider area for study within the middlebrow, and to prompt a recalibration of critical understandings of the British fiction marketplace in the mid-twentieth century.

The present project set out to explore whether or not the members of one of the most powerful families in history functioned as agents of language change. Using the Parsed Corpus of Early English Correspondence (PCEEC), the present project examines and discusses linguistic conservatism and innovation in relation to the historical movement towards a Standard English. This is done by scrutinising six members of the house of Stewart that can be found in the PCEEC following theories and frameworks pertaining to the scientific discipline of sociohistorical linguistics. The findings of the present study suggest that the house of Stewart appears to have been in the vanguard of language change in several respects.

This work focuses on modeling and real-time control of a motion simulator for dynamic testing of a two-axis gyro-stabilized head mirror used in modern tanks. For this purpose, a six-degree-of freedom Stewart Platform which can simulate disturbances on the stabilized head mirror during operation of the tank is employed. Mathematical models of the Stewart Platform are constructed using MATLAB and ADAMS. Control system infrastructure is constructed and real-time control system elements are employed. Controller tuning is achieved by using the developed mathematical models in MATLAB. These parameters are applied in the real-time control system and fine tuning is achieved. Accuracy of the motion simulator is tested by mounting an Inertial Measurement Unit on the Stewart Platform. Further control system strategies are discussed by means of simulation.

Streszczenie:
The Stewart mining camp in northwestern British Columbia is abundantly mineralized with widely distributed, texturally and mineralogically varied, precious and base metal deposits. This report documents the geologic setting of the mining camp and the geologic features of the major mineral deposit types. The Stewart camp is underlain by a 5-kilometre-thick Upper Triassic to Lower Jurassic (Norian? to Toarcian) island arc complex of calc-alkaline basalts, andesites and dacites with interbedded sedimentary rocks. Coeval (211-189 Ma) hornblende granodiorite plutons intruded the arc at two to five kilometres depth. Rocks were deformed during mid-Cretaceous (110 ± 5 Ma) tectonism that produced north-northwest-trending folds, penetrative fabric and lower greenschist facies regional metamorphism (290°±20°C, 4.5 ±1.5 kb). Mid-Eocene (54.8-44.8 Ma) biotite granodiorite of the Coast Plutonic Complex intruded the deformed Mesozoic arc complex. Two mineralizing events formed over 200 mineral occurrences in the district. These two metallogenic epochs were brief (< 5 million years), regional-scale phenomena characterized by different base and precious metal suites. The Early Jurassic ore-forming episode produced Au and Au-Ag-Zn-Pb-Cu deposits. The mid-Eocene episode produced Ag-Pb-Zn ± W ± Mo deposits. Early Jurassic deposits have a characteristic lead isotope signature (²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁴Pb = 18.816; ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁴Pb = 15.617) and include gold-pyrrhotite veins, gold-silver-base metal veins, and stratabound pyritic dacites. All Early Jurassic mineral occurrences are late- to post-intrusive deposits that were emplaced in andesitic to dacitic host rocks at the close of volcanic activity, about 190-185 million years ago. Transitional gold-pyrrhotite veins (Scottie Gold mine) formed in en echelon tension gashes developed in country rock around Early Jurassic plutons during late magma movement. Epithermal gold-silver-base metal veins and breccia veins (Big Missouri and Silbak Premier mines) were deposited along shallower sub-volcanic faults and in hydrothermal breccia zones formed along dyke contacts. Stratabound pyritic dacite tuffs (Mount Dilworth and Iron Cap prospects) formed where venting fumarolic fluids and hotspring pools deposited abundant fine pyrite in local areas on a cooling ignimbrite sheet. Eocene deposits also have a characteristic lead isotope signature (²⁰⁶Pb/²⁰⁴Pb = 19.147; ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁴Pd = 15.627) and include silver-rich galena-sphalerite veins, gold-silver skarns and, beyond the study area, porphyry molybdenum deposits. These mineral occurrences are related to Middle Eocene plutons of the Coast Plutonic Complex. All are late- to post-intrusive deposits emplaced about 50-45 million years ago. Mesothermal silver-lead-zinc veins (Prosperity/Porter Idaho and Riverside mines) were deposited in brittle zones along major fault structures. Skarns (Oral M and Red Reef prospects) developed where plutons cut limestone or limy siltstone units within minor turbidite sequences. Major porphyry molybdenum deposits (Kitsault mine and Ajax) developed where mid-Eocene stocks were emplaced in thick turbidite sequences. Diagnostic features such as lead isotope ratios, stratigraphic and plutonic associations, alteration assemblages, sulphide mineralogy and textures, and precious metal ratios allow discrimination amoung these different deposit types. Using these criteria, the most prospective areas for each deposit type have been targetted for exploration.

Streszczenie:
Dugald Stewart was an influential teacher and philosopher during the final years of the Scottish Enlightenment. Until recently he has been seen as merely a significant expositor of Thomas Reid's common sense philosophy. This thesis does not attempt to assess the novelty of Stewart's writings in relation to his Scottish predecessors such as Reid: rather, it offers a detailed historical study of aspects of his work, placing them in the political and cultural context of the period following the French Revolution. Two questions stimulated this thesis. First, what prompted Stewart, a moral philosopher who was not an experimental philosopher, to write a major work on methodology? Second, why was there a gap of twenty-two years between the first volume of his Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind (1792) and the second (1814), which contained his methodological treatise? I aim to answer these questions by offering a contextual intellectual history of some important aspects of Stewart's work. The thesis argues that Stewart faced a new problem: he had to deal with attacks on moral philosophy - the core subject of the Edinburgh University curriculum - some of which were produced by institutional and political factors affecting the Scottish universities, others by the rising authority of the experimental physical sciences. I consider a selection of Stewart's writings in the light of this problem. In 1804 Stewart's own student, Francis Jeffrey, gave public voice to the charge that the science of mind (which constituted the central part of Scottish common sense philosophy) was outdated, unscientific and useless. Thereafter, Stewart was engaged in what he saw as an urgent task - the defence of the very status of philosophy and the role of the philosopher. The thesis considers some of his major works (and other writings) from this perspective: Philosophical Essays (1810) contained his first direct retort to Jeffrey; Stewart's treatment of methodology in Elements of the Philosophy of the Human Mind, Volume 2 (1814) and his section on intellectual character in Volume 3 (1827) are viewed as two significant components of his attempt to reassert the primacy of moral philosophy and the role of the moral philosopher.

Movement simulators are mechatronic systems that reproduce the main attitudes and movements of a vehicle. In this study are examined simulators based on 3 and 6 degrees of freedom mechanisms. In the second case, the mechanism is able to reproduce all the attitude angles (roll, pitch and yaw) and all the linear displacements (sway, heave and surge) with limitations, but with sufficient amplitude to enable the main movements associated with the vehicle. The use of linear displacement transducers in these articulated mechanisms introduce high inertia effects and increase the mass, decreasing the load/weight ratio and efficiency. Currently, the great development of the inertial central type sensors (IMU – Inertial measurement unit) increased the availability of these transducers on market and greatly reduced cost. Since this is a conjunct of triaxial accelerometers with triaxial gyrometers, sensors such as these ones can be used to determine the position and orientation in space of mechanisms with six degrees of freedom, such as the Stewart Platform. In this work it will be developed a methodology for modeling the kinematics of parallel mechanisms based on derivatives of their jacobian matrices. This methodology is evaluated in a planar parallel mechanism of three degrees of freedom and on a Stewart Platform. With the modeling methodology validated, a control strategy based on the use of an inertial unit type sensor for controlling the position, velocity and acceleration of these mechanisms is implemented. The simulations results indicate the possibility of using these sensors in these types of equipment and point to the need to evaluate this methodology in experimental tests.

A Stewart Platform robot was designed, constructed, and programmed for use in Cal Poly’s ME 423 Robotics: Fundamentals and Applications laboratory section. A Stewart Platform is a parallel manipulator robot with six prismatic joints that has six degrees of freedom, able to be defined in both position and orientation. Its purpose is to supplement parallel robot material covered in lecture. Learning objectives include applying and verifying the Stewart Platform inverse kinematics and investigating the Stewart Platform’s operation, range of motion, and limitations. The Stewart Platform geometry and inverse kinematics were modeled and animated using MATLAB. The platform was then built using linear actuators, magnetic spherical bearings, and acrylic plates. Control of the Stewart Platform is achieved using an Arduino Due and a custom HexaMoto shield. Users interact with the system using a GUI created with MATLAB’s App Designer.

This thesis addresses the on-line servo system design for a Stewart platform. The conventional servo design for the Stewart platform depends on the well-known inverse kinematics to calculate off-line the desired motion trajectory. The servo system then reflects the desired attitude by achieving the required leg lengths from the inverse kinematics calculation. This approach does not allow any on-line attitude feedback or any sudden change in the attitude command. In this thesis, we restructured the servo control scheme for the Stewart platform. The new design incorporated an incremental interpolator to receive on line servo command. The research also covers an exclusive operation range search on the allowable attitude as well as the allowable attitude speed. A near optimal speed approximation algorithm is then proposed. Experimental results show fast responses to the on-line joy-stick input commands. The operator is able to manipulate the platform at any attitude permitted by the work-space limitation.

This thesis deals with the simulation of an orthopaedic device of osteogenesis, the 3d depiction concerning the constructional aspect as well as with the complete study of the movement with the planning of kinematics and inverse kinematics. More concretely the study concerns the category of a Stewart platform and the use of this platform as an exterior appliance for osteogenesis. Our first concern is the description of the phenomenon of osteogenesis and the comprehension of the operation and growth of bones (Chapter 2). Then we proceed in an analytic presentation of devices of osteogenesis that exist, with specific analysis of the operation of any kind that exists in the industrial field leading to the platform that we will study (Chapter 3). Following, we present the kinematical analysis of the Stewart platform as well as the study of the dynamic analysis of this fixator (Chapter 4). Taking into consideration all the above, we advance in the simulation of the Stewart platform, beginning with the planning of kinematical equations, continuing with the simulation in the Simmechanics and finally creating a 3d depiction of the device in the VRML toolbox of Matlab where we can watch the movement of the platform in the xyz space (Chapter 5). Finally, the conclusions and the prospects of this work are represented (Chapter 6).

Expanding the facilities of traditional Stewart platform, the thesis foucses on hexaglide Stewart platform.Firstly, the thesis analyses the kinematics and dynamics of hexaglide Stewart platform in general form, and solves the forward kinematic equation, inverse kinematic equation, dynamic equation, and inverse dynamic equation of the general form. Then we apply these equations to the specific form, which is include parallel hexaglide platform and triangle hexaglide platform. The hexaglide Stewart platform is a nonlinear system. For achieving the high precising tracking control of acceleration, the controller must have an inverse dynamic feedforward compensator. But it is needed to know system parameters before using the feedforward compensator. So we use an online parameters estimator to learn system parameters in real time. The computer simulation result that the parameters estimator can obtain the almost actual values of system parameters. It is concluded that the controller with the inverse dynamic feedforward compensator can achieve the high accelerating performance of the motion platform as wanted.
