El objetivo de este artículo es demostrar que existe una marcada presencia de las ideas de Gilles Deleuze en la era posteórica de la crítica literaria. Para tal propósito, en primer lugar se hace una revisión sucinta de la recepción de las ideas filosóficas francesas en la academia estadounidense de fines del siglo XX, creadora de la hoy llamada Teoría francesa en los estudios literarios. En segundo lugar, este artículo se centra en el análisis de la lectura de superficie, una propuesta de crítica literaria de Sharon Marcus y Stephen Best. Aunque el nombre de Deleuze no aparezca en los fundamentos de esta propuesta, este artículo argumenta que la lectura de superficie es en esencia una práctica deleuziana. The objective of this article is to demonstrate that there is a marked presence of the ideas of Gilles Deleuze in the post-theoretical era of literary criticism. For this purpose, we first make a succinct review of the reception of French philosophical ideas in the American academy of the late twentieth century, creator of the so-called French theory in literary studies. Second, this article focuses on the analysis of surface reading, a literary criticism proposal by Sharon Marcus and Stephen Best. Although the name of Deleuze does not appear in the foundations of this proposal, this article argues that the reading of the surface is essentially a Deleuzian practice.

The thesis aimed to assess the philosophies of Stephen Leek, in regard to the education for an Australian choral tradition. In order to address Stephen Leek's philosophies, a study of Australia's existing choral tradition and its history was conducted. This was followed by a general overview of music education in Australia post 1960. In light of these findings, Leek's educational philosophies were discussed, with specific influences, including biographical information. Leek's educational work Voiceworks was found to encapsulate his ideas. The program is creative-based, and aims to facilitate the discovery of new artistic concepts, and foster acceptance and interest in contemporary Australian choral music. Using the voice as the sole instrument, students can perform the pieces from Voiceworks, or use the ideas for further creativity in their own compositions. The program is based on experimentation, discovery, structuring, formulating, rehearsal, performance and discussion. Leek advocates that these stages are the quickest and most effective way of facilitating the learning of contemporary music techniques. In the evaluation of Leek's philosophies, case studies using a lesson from Voiceworks, were conducted with two Year 7 music classes in two different government coeducational schools. The findings revealed that Voiceworks can be a successful resource in the education for an Australian choral tradition. However, it was also found that excitement, enthusiasm and enjoyment are the key to its success, and hence excellent teaching is required in its presentation.

Piano instructors often have to work as a bridge connecting music from the past and the future. From a pedagogical viewpoint, contemporary works should be considered just as important as those in the standard repertoire. Yet, most piano instructors are skewed towards modern music and their teaching materials are focused on eighteenth and nineteenth century repertoire. It is essential for them to introduce various kinds of music from different periods and cultures in order to fully develop a student's musicianship. The purpose of this study is to compare two modern works that are designed mainly for pedagogical purposes: 32 Piano Games by Ross Lee Finney (1906-1997) and Amusements by Stephen Chatman (b. 1950). These compositions are intended for beginner and intermediate students and incorporate a number of contemporary elements and techniques. This study can help instructors and students understand how these elements are being used and the ways they have evolved over time. Most importantly, this dissertation can provide teachers with a distinct methodology that enables them to present modern pieces to beginning level students in a more approachable fashion, further providing theoretical and technical assets that will allow them to play advanced contemporary music in the future.

Externally predetermined algorithms and practices of third-party data processing raise questions as to the protection of and the danger to autonomy and the freedom of expression. In contrast to the Greek distinction between comedy and tragedy, laughter in East Asia tends to be allied with equilibrium, an integral part of a balanced state and state of mind. This chapter highlights major figures and trends associated with humor in Japan (Yasujiro Ozu, Juzo Itami, Toshiro Mifune), Korea (Jee-won Kim, Sang-jin Kim), Hong Kong (Jackie Chan, Stephen Chow), Taiwan (Chun Han Wang, Ang Lee), and the People’s Republic of China (Zhang Yimou, Xiaogang Feng).

This chapter, which originally appeared in somewhat different form in New Thoughts on the Black Arts Movement (2006), places that Black literary and cultural revolution in dialogue with another cultural earthquake of the 1960s, the emergence of a mass white audience for blues music. For some Black Arts writers and thinkers like Ron Karenga, Sonia Sanchez, and Haki Madhubuti (Don L. Lee), the blues savored of black southern abjection and were, in Karenga’s dismissive judgment, “invalid,” an outmoded form without the political utility urgently needed in a time of Black revolution. Yet for many others, led by Larry Neal, the blues were a cherished ancestral rootsock and inalienably Black cultural inheritance—“the essential vector of the Afro-American sensibility and identity.” Even as the blues were being debated within the Black intelligentsia, a white blues revolution was transpiring, one in which white fans imagined themselves forming a beloved community with aged Black blues players who had been brought back into national circulation at festivals and college gigs, and in which white blues artists like Paul Butterfield and Janis Joplin, enjoying mass popularity, drew the fierce condemnation of Black Arts writers Ron Welburn and Stephen E. Henderson.

The partial penetration of Railroad Redoubt by Sgt. Joseph E. Griffith and twelve men of the 22nd Iowa had never really threatened to capture that work for the Federals. Nor could the Confederates easily evict those Unionists. The work constituted part of no-man’s-land for most of May 22 until orders arrived from Pemberton to reclaim the entire redoubt. Brigade leader Stephen D. Lee assigned the task to Col. Thomas N. Waul, who organized a small band of volunteers from his Texas Legion. Helped by Col. Edmund W. Pettus of the 20th Alabama, who volunteered to lend his services to the group, they counterattacked along the parapet that extended toward the southeast corner of the work where Griffith’s party had been ensconced. By this time, late in the afternoon, Griffith and his men had quietly evacuated the work but there were still Federal troops taking shelter in the ditch in front of it. Pettus’ counterattack not only reclaimed all of Railroad Redoubt but soon drove the Federals out of the ditch as well. Far from a campaign-winning opportunity, as McClernand portrayed Griffith’s penetration to Grant earlier that day, the struggle for Railroad Redoubt ended with a relatively easy Confederate defensive success.

As the 1960s end and the 1970s begin, Betty Comden and Adolph Green worked on two new shows. The first was Applause, which though set in then-present-day New York was something of a backward glance. It was a musical version of the classic Bette Davis film All About Eve. The show, which had a score by composer Charles Strouse and lyricist Lee Adams, was a hit for the writers and its star, film luminary Lauren Bacall, who was making her debut in a musical. They followed with another nostalgic piece of writing, Lorelei, a revision of the musical Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, penned specifically for its original star, Carol Channing. Comden and Green were only to provide lyrics for a handful of new songs, but when the production was foundering on the road they stepped in as its directors, working on it for over a year.

The Gothic emerged in the eighteenth century as a potent literary critique of modern Western forms of law. At the same time as the law itself the Gothic began to take shape and rapidly diversify in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. This chapter suggests that Gothic writing by women in particular interrogates the ontological instability and physical vulnerability of the female subject before the law and that it does so through repeated evocations, in various historical and cultural contexts, of the relationship between law, sacrifice, trauma and shame. Points of continuity between older modes of Female Gothic and its more contemporary manifestations are identified through analyses of novels by Sophia Lee, Ann Radcliffe and Eliza Parsons followed by an examination of female-authored vampire fictions by Stephenie Meyer and Charlaine Harris. Drawing on Juliet MacCannell’s work, the chapter argues that these diverse narratives articulate the trauma and shame of female subjects constructed in and through the law as sacrificial objects of exchange between ‘brothers’. Contemporary female Gothic fictions, it concludes, expose the trauma and shame of the law itself as its ontological coherence begins to disintegrate under the conditions of late-modernity.

Abstract Various studies have been carried out related to the labyrinth seals and reported in the open literature using the different seal arrangements at the stator-rotor seal cavity region. In the present study, numerical analysis has been carried out for the static and rotational effects of labyrinth seals at various flow and geometrical, parametric conditions for the optimized leak flow using straight and steeped seal configurations. And, an experimental data has been generated for the straight through seals, and the numerical data of the same case is validated with the experimental data. The k-omega SST turbulence model is considered with 5% turbulence intensity for the CFD analysis. At a particular seal clearance, as the number of teeth increases the leakage flow is found to be decreased. The leak flow is found to be lower with the stepped labyrinth seals in comparison to the straight through seals. The leak flow amount is found to be lower at a rotational condition in comparison to the stationary condition. From the overall results, it is observed that the stepped seal with a lower clearance at a compressor bleed air temperature and rotational conditions have shown better performance with the lower leak air mass flow.

Abstract Even with improvements to remove excessive conservatisms, current fatigue assessment approaches can result in high Cumulative Usage Factors (CUFs) for some analyses. In order to improve plant availability from these assessments and mitigate future changes to design codes, an improvement in understanding in this area is desirable. Hence the proposal for a Life Assessment Methodology (LAM) was created. The LAM is a concept for an approach based on modelling each stage of fatigue life to predict total fatigue life, as a means of minimising conservatism in an assessment, where necessary. It should also be capable of incorporating statistical methods to assign reliability figures to calculated plant lives. This paper describes the proposed definition of the LAM and how a proof of concept version of the LAM was developed to assess the Bettis Bechtel Stepped Pipe (BBSP) test. The results were presented with two seeded cases (fixed inputs) and a range of lives corresponding to associated Target Reliabilities (TRs). The Best Estimate (BE) and TR associated lives produced were based on using the latest methods available for calculating Fatigue Initiation (FI) and Fatigue Crack Growth (FCG), whereas the seeded Effective Strain Range (ESR) comparison case used current deterministic assessment methods. The results for the case study concluded that there is a benefit to pursuing the development of the LAM when compared to traditional assessment methods. It highlighted and quantified the conservatism present in traditional assessment methods for these cases as well as the need to understand the required TR for a specific component as this can have a large effect on the predicted life. With further refinements to the method, a more realistic and robust output of the total fatigue life distribution (for specific cases) would be obtained, which in turn would allow us to better quantify the conservatism associated with a TR.

CANDU Zr-2.5 Nb pressure tubes are susceptible to a cracking mechanism known as Delayed Hydride Cracking (DHC), which is a repetitive process that involves hydrogen diffusion, hydride precipitation and fracture at a crack tip. As defense-in-depth, when DHC is postulated to have initiated from a flaw, it is required to demonstrate that the crack can be detected by the leak monitoring system and the reactor safely shut down before the crack reaches the critical length for pressure tube rupture. DHC growth rates (DHCR) in the axial direction of the tube are required for such leak-before-break assessment. In this test program, the effect of hydrogen isotope and its concentration on DHCR in an unirradiated Zr-2.5 Nb pressure tube is studied. Pressure tube sections were hydrided or deuterided to different concentrations (nominal concentrations of 60, 100 and 190 ppm by weight). For the deuterided tube sections, they contained about 10 ppm of hydrogen from the manufacturing process. The DHC growth rate tests were performed on fatigue pre-cracked curved compact tension specimens, machined from the hydrided or deuterided tube sections, in several stepper-motor controlled load frames with cracking being monitored by direct current potential drop and acoustic emission techniques. DHCR at three test temperatures (270°C, 240°C and 200°C) were obtained from each specimen with the test temperatures approached from a peak temperature of 330°C. Some specimens were tested with a peak temperature of either 370°C or 300°C. The two main conclusions from the study are: (1) DHCR are affected by the hydrogen in solution at the test temperature and not by the amount of bulk hydrides present. The hydrogen in solution at a given test temperature depends on the hydrogen concentration of the specimen, as well as the thermal history (peak temperature in the initial thermal cycle and the test temperature) as a result of the hysteresis of Terminal Solid Solubility between hydride dissolution during heating and precipitation during cooling. (2) The DHC growth rates of the hydrided material are higher than those of the deuterided material because of the higher diffusion rate of hydrogen than deuterium. The isotope effect of hydrogen on DHC growth rates depends on the test temperature, with no apparent effect at 200°C and about 37% difference at 270°C which is slightly below the factor of √2 expected from the mass law of diffusion. The observed temperature dependence could be due to the presence of about 10 ppm hydrogen in the deuterided specimens, which dominates the DHC process at 200°C but insufficient to have a large effect at 270°C. The implication of the observed isotope and concentration effect of hydrogen on DHC growth rates on leak-fore-break assessment of flaws in pressure tubes is discussed.

This paper presents an overview of the work undertaken by Rolls-Royce to justify the use of a Hot Isostatically Pressed (HIP) Reactor Circulating Pump (RCP) bowl manufactured in 316L stainless steel for a Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) application. It presents the work from a design justification/manufacturing quality assurance perspective, rather than from a pure metallurgical perspective. Although the HIP process is not new, it was new in its application to Rolls-Royce designed nuclear reactor plant. As a consequence, Rolls-Royce has implemented an evolving, staged approach, starting with HIP bonding of solid valve seats into small bore valve pressure boundaries. This was followed by powder HIP consolidation of leak-limited, thin-walled toroids, and has culminated in the powder HIP consolidation of thick-walled components such as RCP bowls. The paper provides an overview of each of these stages, the method of manufacture for the RCP bowl, and the approach taken with respect to justification. In previous Rolls-Royce applications of HIP to PWR plant components, the component section thickness has been fairly consistent. For the RCP bowl application, the section thickness varies quite considerably. To assess any variation in properties as a result of section thickness variation, a stepped wedge technology demonstrator was first manufactured and non-destructively and destructively examined to assess whether material properties remain within specification. The paper presents material property results for ‘Near Surface’ and ‘Buried’ samples taken from section thicknesses covering 50mm to 300mm. Yield, Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), Charpy ‘V’ notch impact strength and Strauss test results were found to be within specification for all section thicknesses. An analysis of the data shows no statistical difference in material properties across the different section thicknesses for both near surface and buried properties, except for Charpy ‘V’ notch impact strength, for which, above 50mm, mean ‘Buried’ strength is significantly higher than mean strength for ‘Near Surface’. It is observed that the mean ‘Near Surface’ yield and tensile strength appears to increase with section thickness; however, there are insufficient data to demonstrate whether or not the increase is statistically significant. There appears to be a reduction in mean ‘Buried’ yield strength when the section thickness is at 300mm, compared to thinner sections, but again, the current data are insufficient to determine whether or not the reduction is statistically significant. It could be postulated that there is a point at which the section thickness starts to influence the cooling rate, and as a consequence grain growth may be more prominent at the ‘Buried’ position. This could result in yield and tensile material properties being detrimentally affected. However, this is not supported by an analysis of Charpy ‘V’ notch impact strength results, for which a similar reduction would be expected; the highest ‘Buried’ Charpy results occur in the thickest section. Further work is ongoing to understand this observation. Non-destructive examination results of a prototype RCP bowl are presented. This shows no defects identified from dye penetrant surface examination and ultrasonic testing for a rejection level set at a 3mm flat bottomed hole.
