The majority of American student-athletes participate in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) programs. Those programs are categorized into three different Divisions, which demonstrate differences in athletic scholarship support, level of competition, and philosophy. Among them, Division III (DIII) institutions account for the highest percentage of schools who play collegiate sports, followed by Division I (DI). Recent events and evidence on depression and suicide, anxiety, disordered eating and eating disorders, and substance use and abuse have raised awareness on mental health difficulties in this specific population of young adults. The purpose of this study is to add to the current state of knowledge by investigating whether there are differences in the promotion of a wellness lifestyle between a DI and a DIII university. Using an online interview created by Côté, Ericcson, and Law (2005) all student athletes from both Rice University (DI) and State University of New York (SUNY) at Plattsburgh (DIII) were recruited via email. Sixty-three participated from Rice and 90 from SUNY Plattsburgh. The response rate was 17% and 29%, respectively. Descriptive statistics and parametric tests were used in data analysis. By comparing these two case studies, differences with statistical significance were found in the current activities of sleeping, socializing, school/career, and studying. These differences infer that a DIII school may be promoting a wellness lifestyle more than a DI school. Possible limitations are the use of unequal samples and self-reported data. Future research on comparing more cases of different Division schools is recommended.

Background/Context The traditional literature on the history of higher education in the United States focuses on linear explanations of the inexorable growth of the size, mission, and importance of colleges and universities. That approach ignores or minimizes a recurrent strain of discontent with the higher education sector, especially from policy elites. Purpose/Objective/Research Question/Focus of Study This article examines the century-old origins of a continuing reform impulse in higher education. It identifies the reforms in question as “systemic,” both because they extended beyond the workings of individual colleges and universities and because they had at their heart the dream of systemization, linking and coordinating policy at groupings of institutions at the state, regional, or national level. The narrative focuses on the establishment, operations, and ideology of two early philanthropic foundations designed to spur systemic reform in the higher education sector: the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the General Education Board. Research Design This article relies on historical analysis informed by organizational theory. Data Collection and Analysis The data for this article come from new archival research, mostly conducted at the Rockefeller Archive Center (Sleepy Hollow, NY), Library of Congress Manuscript Division (Washington, DC), and Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library (New York, NY). Conclusions/Recommendations This article identifies an ideologically consistent, interlocked cohort of reformers whom the author calls “the academic engineers.” These individuals, associated with elite universities and philanthropic foundations, articulated a vision of higher education reform based on increasing the efficiency and utility of institutions and linking them together in a hierarchical system. The author identifies four key features of this vision and describes the academic engineers’ efforts to enact them. The reformers had some successes but failed to realize their overarching goals; in the article's conclusion, the author examines the historical context and organizational theory as partial explanations for this shortfall.

Professor Carol Collins graduated in Chemistry from Bates College (1952) and obtained her PhD in Organic Physical Chemistry from Iowa State University of Science and Technology (1958), when she was introduced to the recently developed gas–liquid chromatography. She conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin and later worked on radiochemistry and nuclear medicine at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Western New York Nuclear Research Center in Louvain (Belgium) and Southwest Asia. Professor Collins came to the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) with her husband, Kenneth Collins, in July 1974, during the university’s first decade, and played a leading role in consolidation of the Institute of Chemistry at Unicamp and in the growth of chemistry and analytical chemistry in Brazil. Her first line of research in Brazil was radioanalytical chemistry, later focusing on chromatographic techniques, initially applied to the products of radiochemical reactions and radiation chemistry. Subsequently, her attention was directed to the preparation of stationary phases for liquid chromatography. She gained remarkable achievement in the area of chromatography that allowed her to publish two books that are very popular in Brazil: "Introduction to Chromatographic Methods" (1987) and "Fundamentals of Chromatography" (2006). Her scientific and technological contributions have been recognized through several awards, including the “Marie Curie Award” from the American Association of University Women and the “Simão Mathias Medal” from the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). She also received honors in recognition of the contributions of Unicamp's 40th anniversary, SBQ's 30th anniversary, a tribute from the Journal of the Brazilian Chemical Society, the National Meeting of Analytical Chemistry, the School of Separations and the Brazilian Symposium on Chromatography and Related Techniques (SIMCRO) Medal. For her outstanding performance and leadership in the creation and consolidation of the Analytical Chemistry Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society, her name was recognized in the Carol Collins Medal given to each National Meeting of Analytical Chemistry since the 2018 edition. Professor Collins was also a full member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of São Paulo, and received the title of Professor Emerita of Unicamp on 14 May 2012, in addition to being Emeritus Researcher at the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). Apart from her scientific competence, some characteristics shaped her personality and made her very popular among her colleagues and students: her vast gourmet knowledge, keen taste for caipirinha and coffee, infallible memory, great love for her work and for Brazil, dedication to science, analytical chemistry/chromatography, kindness as a person and her incessant search for justice. She was always receptive to clarifying the doubts of students, teachers and interested parties, which she did with great pleasure, characteristic of those who like to teach and transmit knowledge. The contributions of Professor Collins to the training of human resources, the consolidation and development of the Institute of Chemistry at Unicamp and the analytical chemistry/chromatography sector in Brazil and abroad are immeasurable. Her brilliant trajectory will leave a huge legacy that is difficult to measure and she will remain forever in the memory of those who were fortunate enough to live with her.

The English version of this article was first published in 1957. The journal tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique republished it 60 years later in 2017. In this essay, Franz L. Neumann discusses the role of anxiety in politics. The article asks: How does it happen that the masses sell their souls to leaders and follow them blindly? On what does the power of attraction of leaders over masses rest? What are the historical situations in which this identification of leader and masses is successful, and what view of history do the men have who accept leaders? For answering these questions, the author suggests a combination of political economy, Freudian political psychology, and ideology critique. He sees anxiety in the context of alienation. Alienation is analysed as a multidimensional phenomenon consisting of economic, political, social and psychological alienation. Neumann introduces the notions of Caesaristic identification, institutionalised anxiety and persecutory anxiety. He obtained a doctoral degree in legal studies at the University of Frankfurt with the dissertation „Rechtsphilosophische Einleitung zu einer Abhandlung über das Verhältnis von Staat und Strafe“ (A Legal-Philosophical Introduction to A Treatise on the Relationship between the State and Punishment). Neumann became the German Social Democratic Party’s (SPD) main legal advisor at a time when the Nazis and Hitler gained strength in Germany. At the time when Hitler came to power in 1933, the legal office had to be closed and Neumann had to flee from Germany. In London, he in 1936 obtained his second doctoral degree from the London School of Economics with the work “The Governance of the Rule of Law” under the supervision of Harold Laski and Karl Mannheim. Neumann moved to New York in 1936, where he became a member of the Institute of Social Research (also known as the “Frankfurt School”) that was then in exile in the USA. In 1942, he started working for the Office of Strategic Service (OSS), where he together with Herbert Marcuse and Otto Kirchheimer analysed Nazi Germany. In 1942, Neumann published his main book is Behemoth: The Structure and Practice of National Socialism, 1933–1944 (2nd, updated edition published in 1944), one of the most profound analyses of Nazi Germany’s political economy and ideology. Franz L. Neumann died in 1954 in a car accident.

Harvey S. Levin obtained his Bachelor’s degree from City College of New York, in New York city, Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Iowa, in Iowa City, completed his internships in Clinical Neuropsychology and Pediatric Psychology at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago, and his fellowship in Neuropsychology at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.Dr. Levin started his career in 1972 as Instructor with the Department of Psychology at the University of Iowa and transitioned to The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, in 1974, where he began an internationally renowned career in clinical work, teaching, and, most of all, pioneering research on traumatic brain injury (TBI). He ultimately became the Chela and Jimmy Storm Distinguished Professor in Surgical Research, Division of Neurosurgery, Department of Surgery in 1987. After leaving Texas for two years to take a position with the University of Maryland Medical System and Shock Trauma Institute in Baltimore, he moved back to Houston Texas in 1995 and established the Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory (CNL) within the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Baylor College of Medicine, which was supported by federal grants, including funding from the National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and numerous private foundations. The CNL integrated rehabilitation and neuroplasticity research with multimodality brain imaging, clinical and neuropsychological assessment, and fluid biomarkers. Dr. Levin was Professor with the Departments of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation where he served as Director of Research (1995-2014), Pediatrics, and Neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He was also a Research Scientist and the Director of the Center of Excellence for Traumatic Brain Injury at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (2008-2013), and Adjunct Professor with the Department of Psychology at Rice University in Houston, Texas.Dr. Levin’s research focused on investigating both acute and long-term outcomes of mild to severe TBI in civilian and military populations, including cognitive and behavioral sequelae in relation to neuropathology using advanced brain imaging modalities. He began prospective, longitudinal studies of adults and children who had sustained TBI associated with closed head trauma upon joining UTMB and developed, in collaboration with Drs O’Donnell and Grossman, the Galveston Orientation and Amnesia Test (GOAT). The GOAT was the first measure to assess post-traumatic amnesia and orientation following moderate to severe TBI, is still most widely used by the clinicians and researchers, and it has been translated to 16 languages. This work continued with participation in the NINDS Traumatic Coma Data Bank and the organization of outcome assessments for NINDS-funded clinical trials of hypothermia to treat severe TBI. To monitor the quality of outcome data across performing sites, Dr. Levin and colleagues developed a code for the reliability of data collected and implemented the role of an outcome monitor who evaluated adherence to protocol across sites. Following establishment of the CNL, he pursued investigation of TBI outcomes across the lifespan using multimodality brain imaging and biomarkers, errorless learning, translational studies in collaboration with neuroscientists using animal models, and clinical trials of methylphenidate, progesterone, CDP-choline. Dr. Levin spent over 30 years researching neurobehavioral outcomes of head injury in children, starting with a small pilot study funded by the Shriners Hospital in 1991 and continuing with several cycles of a multicenter R01 grant funded by the National Institute of Health. In later years, he used his expertise as a member of several large consortiums, including the Long-term Impact of Military-Relevant Brain Injury Consortium \ Chronic Effects of Neurotrauma Consortium (LIMBIC-CENC) funded by the VA and DoD and the Transforming Research and Clinical Knowledge in Traumatic Brain Injury (TRACK-TBI) funded by the NINDS.During his career, Dr. Levin authored and coauthored more than 400 articles in scientific journals and over 100 books, with one of them, “Levin, H. S., Benton, A. L., & Grossman, R. G. (1982). Neurobehavioral consequences of closed head injury. Oxford University Press, USA”, having over 1100 citation, as well as book chapters that advanced knowledge of TBI, epilepsy, neurodegenerative diseases, and other illnesses that affect brain functioning. He was also very active as a reviewer on federal grant panels and as an editor and reviewer for the Journal of Neurotrauma, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychology, Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Neuropsychology, Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society, Lancet, JAMA, Pediatrics, and other top-cited journals. He served as president of the International Neuropsychological Society in 1989-1990. Dr. Levin was a recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award, the Jennett-Plum Award for Research on Traumatic Brain Injury, the Distinguished Career Award by the International Neuropsychological Society, the American Congress of Rehabilitation Gold Key Award, the Distinguished Lifetime Contribution to Neuropsychology Award from the National Academy of Neuropsychology, as well as awards from other head injury and psychological organizations, including the International Brain Injury Association, the National Head Injury Foundation, the North American Brain Injury Society, Texas Psychological Association, and the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center. In addition to his stellar scientific accomplishments, Dr. Levin trained, mentored, and provided supervision to interns, fellows, postdocs, residents, medical and psychology students. He was the Director of an NCMRR/NIH T32 Postdoctoral Research Program, and training supervisor in neuropsychology for Baylor College of Medicine and for the Memorial Hermann TIRR Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs. A passionate educator, he taught classes at Baylor College of Medicine, the University of Houston, and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens Medical School in Greece and served as an evaluator for the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology/American Board of Professional Psychology. He was often invited as a lecturer at numerous scientific organizations.The main objective of this symposium is to provide an overview of the current state of research in TBI while highlighting Dr. Levin’s contributions to this field. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using mind mapping method in improving early childhood educator’s skill in mastering the child development assessment. This research is quasi-experimental using a pre-test and post-test design. The population was the entire classes of early childhood education training held by LPK Yayasan Indonesia Mendidik Jaka Sampurna at Cileungsi, Bogor. The participants were 45 early childhood educators. This study used three research methods which are implemented from learning methods in child development assessment was as pre-test and post-test. Data were collected by using two instruments to measure early childhood educators for child development assessment. The data were analysed by using t-test to measures the differences data in pre-test and post-test. The results showed that the use of mind mapping methods can help early childhood educators to improve their mastery of the development assessment concept which averages 51.9 percent. It showed significant results with ttest value is 18,266 (N = 10, α = 0,0). This capacity building is reinforced by various qualitative findings which arise from early childhood educators’ awareness to change the old learning style into learning by mind mapping method as a learning method that follows how the brain works. This study also found that early childhood educators as adults who are in the stage of formal thinking have shown an understanding that mind mapping method are appropriate, fast, easy and practical in mastering various development assessment concepts. After earning a BA in English from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she spent most of her career at the National Science Foundation. After a brief stay at the State University of New York at Buffalo, she moved to NSF, where she rose to be the program director for the Decision, Risk and Management Division of Social and Economic Science.

The Psychology Department at the University at Buffalo, SUNY offers mentorship-based, research-intensive Masters’ and Doctoral degrees in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience Areas of Psychology. Faculty specialize in audition, vocal production, psycholinguistics, bioacoustics, language development, attention, music cognition, and learning. Specific expertise includes auditory and vocal processing and multisensory integration across the lifespan. Study populations include mice, whales, and human children and adults, including special populations such as musicians, bilinguals, and people with conditions like aphasia, autism, dyslexia and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Methodologies include, but are not limited to, eye tracking, functional magnetic resonance imaging, motion capture, animal psychophysics, electroencephalograms, and surface electromyography. The program is collaborative, collegial, and supportive, and the graduate student stipends are competitive in an area of the country with a low cost of living. Students train with other students and faculty to become experts in their chosen area of study. AbstractA survey of organic farmers in New York State identified problems in need of university research. Weed management was the most frequently mentioned problem by far, identified as significant by two-thirds of the organic farmers. Only a few other problems were listed as significant, including insufficient time for farm work, lack of markets, low prices, and lack of appropriate tools. These were cited by more than a third of the farmers. Drought, insect management, and a lack of a dependable supply of labor were cited by about one-third of the respondents. The survey also examined organic farmers' information sources. They do not use conventional sources of agricultural information, such as the extension service and conventional agricultural media, as much as books, magazines, and newsletters on organic f arming, other organic f armers, and on-farm experiments. Many respondents noted that local extension agents did not know very much about non-chemical solutions to organic production problems. They considered University Extension to be accessible, but not very useful in solving problems specific to organic farming, and had many suggestions to improve Land Grant research in organic agriculture.

The present work is a revision of corruption and the social effects it has on culture, poverty, gender and social organizations, interpreting these instances as integrative for the understanding of corruption as a phenomenon. Furthermore, the present work analyses the legal context of corruption in Paraguay. To address this, a literature review of current and topical research was carry it out, contextualizing the problem from a regional South American perspective and relating it to the efforts of the Paraguayan state with a focus on social corruption as described by various experts on the matter. In terms of the latter, the revision of the legal context of corruption in Paraguay creates an overview of the phenomenon, thus not only identifying the principal institutions, but also exposing their institutional evolution and the changes they represent in reality. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the patterns and determinants of the division of household tasks within couples in countries under different welfare-state regimes. Design/methodology/approach The paper investigates data on “urban middle- and upper-class” couples living in New York, Paris or Tokyo area, from a 2007 international comparative time-budget survey carried out at the initiative of the Rengo-Soken Research Institute. Each partner was interviewed separately, offering a unique statistical source for analysing the organisation of domestic time. Findings The results shed light on the degree of proximity among the three populations in their housework-sharing arrangements. Greater parity in partners’ housework time is found for the New York couples, regardless of their occupational activity. In Paris and especially in Tokyo, other demands on the partners’ time and the contribution each makes to the household income both impact the actual division of household labour. Research limitations/implications The partners’ gender ideology was not elicited, and inclusion of lower-class couples could change certain results. However, the findings attest to the strong role that welfare-state regime plays in shaping housework time allocation. Originality/value Unlike other international comparisons, the survey used enables us to ensure strong comparability of measures. The welfare-state regime and family model frameworks clearly highlight the interplay between individual determinants and the institutional context.

The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSAGM) Division of Food Safety and Inspection (NYSAGM-FSI), observed high levels of heavy metals in spices through its routine food surveillance program. There are no federal action levels for heavy metals in spices. In consultation with the NYSAGM Food Laboratory (NYSAGM-FL) and using results from a devised targeted sampling plan, NYSAGM-FSI instituted a State Class II action level of 1 ppm for Pb, arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) and a State Class I action level of 25 ppm for Pb in spices. In 2018, NYSAGM and the New York State Department of Health’s Bureau of Toxic Substance Assessment (NYSDOH-BTSA) created the Center of Excellence on Food Research to determine actionable limits of contaminants commonly found in spices, particularly heavy metals. NYSDOH-BTSA performed an assessment of relevant literature published and derived health-based guidance values for As, Cd, chromium (Cr), and Pb in spices. Consequently, NYSAGM lowered the State’s Class II action levels for Pb, As and Cd in spices by a factor of almost 5 times and is the first State in the nation to establish action levels for heavy metals in spices providing better protection to New York State consumers. https://doi.org/10.21423/jrs-v10i1ishida

Arthur Frederic Fishkin was born on May 27, 1930, in New York City, USA, and passed away peacefully in his sleep in Omaha, Nebraska on his 80th birthday, on May 27, 2010. He attended elementary and secondary school in New York, obtained a B.A. in Zoology from Indiana University in 1951 and an M.A. in 1953. He was awarded the Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Iowa in 1957. He held faculty positions at Louisiana State University, New Mexico State University, and Creighton University. His research activities dealt with enzymes and glycoproteins in connective tissues. He contributed to the training of thousands of students in the medical sciences for almost half a century.

The Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) was established in 1985 by Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. At that time, nearly half of the research at Clarkson was materials-related but was conducted in seven separate departments of science and engineering. To coordinate and encourage this strong materials program, CAMP was created as an interdisciplinary center dedicated to research on high-technology materials processing.The current corporate sponsors of CAMP are Corning Incorporated, Eastman Kodak, Xerox Corporation, and IBM. These and over 30 other industrial members support individual research projects. In 1987 the New York State Science and Technology Foundation designated CAMP as the New York State Center for Advanced Materials Processing, entitling CAMP to $1 million per year in operating funds. In addition, CAMP is supported by federal and University sources.In its role as an education and research initiative, CAMP has three goals:1. Enhance Clarkson University's expertise and reputation as a center of excellence in materials processing research.2. Greatly increase the mutually beneficial relationships between industrial organizations and the University; and3. Strengthen graduate and undergraduate education in materials processing.Innovative research by Egon Matijević, Distinguished University Professor, has contributed greatly to the development of the fundamental principles for the formation and interactions of colloidal dispersions. Using Matijević's work as a foundation, CAMP has developed four programs in high-technology materials research: electronic materials processing, fine-particle processing, particulate control in process equipment, and polymer processing.

This article outlines in considerable detail Cornell University's Employee Assistance Education and Research Program which is funded by the New York State Department of Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, in cooperation with the Christopher D. Smithers Foundation of Mill Neck, NY. It utilizes an academic curriculum in combination with field experience to further develop the EAP profession. It has been on-going since the Fall of 1985 in various New York State cities (Syracuse, New York, Rochester, and Albany) and will soon expand to include Buffalo and Long Island. The authors were assisted with implementation of the program by Bernard Flaherty, who acts as its co-director, and who is Director of the Central District of Cornell's Extension Division of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. In addition, the article addresses a dilemma faced by personnel executives as they try to reach decisions about how to assure quality in the EAP programs, and in the personnel who staff them. On the one hand, they seek practical, applied programs that can be readily implemented and attractive to employees. On the other, there is a need to feel confident that the EAP personnel they employ are thoroughly acquainted with the workplace, and with the treatment place, and have a sound understanding of the emotional disturbances that cause troubled employees to be poor performers.

Beginning in 1995, Colgate University has offered seven two-week summer workshops in archaeology to members of the Oneida (Iroquois) Indian Nation of New York Youth Work/Learn Program. These workshops, directed by Jordan Kerber and funded by the Oneida Indian Nation, Colgate University, and the John Ben Snow Foundation, have provided more than one hundred Oneida teenagers with hands-on experiences in the limited excavation and laboratory processing of prehistoric and historic Native American remains in central New York State. This article also discusses the various challenges and benefits of involving a Native American descendant community in archaeological research.

This article examines data on student achievement and school demographics not explored by the researchers who have promoted Community School District 2 (CSD 2) as a model of urban school reform that should be replicated elsewhere. Data on achievement indicate a remarkable degree of social and racial stratification among CSD 2's schools and levels of achievement that closely correlate with race, ethnicity, and poverty. In addition, when CSD 2's scores on state and city tests of mathematics are compared with results from CSD 25 in Queens, a school district that serves a population demographically similar, the superiority of its functioning becomes questionable. The article explains why the design of research on CSD 2 illustrates the perils to both research and policy when university-based researchers assume the role of “cheerleader” (Cuban, 1988), promoting reforms they have aided in implementing and assessing.

Despite South Sudan’s high potential in agriculture and cultivation, food insecurity brought dire consequences to the people’s well-being throughout 2017. The previous research mostly points to the South Sudan ongoing civil war as the main cause of food insecurity but has yet to sufficiently explore the case study using a human security approach. This paper will attempt to analyze the relevance of the human security approach in explaining the primary factor of food insecurity for the South Sudan people during 2017 and how the approach can be used to mitigate the issue. The author argues that the human security approach can reveal the South Sudan government’s lack of prioritization for their people’s well-being in decision-making as the primary factor of food insecurity, which can be mitigated by a people-centered approach in the future decisions of all the relevant actors. The author utilized Ken Booth’s security as emancipation theory as the main perspective in the study alongside Sabine Alkire’s human security concept and Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) food security indicators. The main findings confirm the importance of the human security approach in the decision-making of governments and other relevant actors, especially in the context of ensuring food security. McKeachie has been the president of the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Association of Higher Education, the American Psychological Foundation, the Division of Educational and School Psychology of the International Association of Applied Psychology, and APA's Divisions 2 and 15. He received his PhD at the University of Michigan in 1949 and is former Director of the University of Michigan Center for Research on Learning and Teaching. He also served as Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Michigan from 1961 to 1971. Professor McKeachie has received eight honorary degrees, the American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal for Lifetime Contributions to Psychology, and the American Psychological Association Presidential Citation for exemplary service to the academic and scientific community. His classic book, Teaching Tips, is now in its 12th edition (McKeachie & Svinicki, 2006). Héfer Bembenutty is an Assistant Professor of Educational Psychology at Queens College of The City University of New York in the Department of Secondary and Youth Services. He received his BA in psychology from the University of Michigan, an MS in psychology from Eastern Michigan University, and an MA and PhD in educational psychology from The City University of New York. He maintains an active research agenda in students' and teachers' self-regulation of learning, the effects of test anxiety on learning, homework self-regulation, self-efficacy beliefs, multicultural education, and academic delay of gratification. Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate temporal trends in gunshot wound (GSW)-associated orthopedic injuries among children, adolescents, and young adults in New York State, and to determine the impact of the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic on the incidence of these injuries. Methods: The New York Statewide Planning and Research Cooperative System (SPARCS) inpatient database was reviewed to identify patients ≤ 21 years of age who presented to a hospital with GSW-associated injuries from January 2016 to December 2020. Patient diagnosis codes were cross-referenced with the list of the International Classification of Diseases Version 10 Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) codes for orthopedic injuries to determine the incidence of GSW-associated orthopedic injuries among this cohort. The number of cases was cross-referenced with New York State census population estimates to calculate incidence per million. The geographic incidence was plotted over a map of New York State with sub-division based on facility Zone Improvement Plan (ZIP) codes. Poisson regression was used to compare the injury incidence in 2020 (pandemic onset) versus the preceding years (pre-pandemic). Results: Between 2016 and 2020, there were 548 inpatient admissions for GSW-associated orthopedic injuries, representing an incidence of 5.6 cases per million. Injury incidence decreased from 2016 to 2019, with an increase in 2020 representing almost 28% of the total cases identified. There was a statistically significant difference in the incidence rate ratio for 2020 compared to 2016–2019 (p < 0.001). The majority of patients were male (94%), African–American (73%), and covered by either Medicare (49%) or Managed Care (47%). Most cases were clustered around large metropolitan areas with low incidence in suburban and rural regions of the state. Conclusions: There was a two-fold increase in the incidence of GSW-associated orthopedic injuries among patients ≤ 21 years old in New York State during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The main elements of the management model are: the formation of a digital project platform, the formation of a motivation system for students and teachers, the creation of a new structural division of the University-the project office and the criteria for evaluating the planned activities. This article is a case study of the Morris Justice Project (MJP), a participatory action research (PAR) study in a South Bronx neighborhood of New York City (NYC) designed to understand residents’ experiences with and attitudes towards the New York Police Department (NYPD). An illustration of public science, the research was conducted in solidarity with an emerging police reform movement and in response to an ongoing and particularly aggressive set of policing policies that most heavily impacts poor communities and communities of color. The case study describes a set of ongoing participatory, research-action, “sidewalk science” strategies, developed in 42 square blocks of the South Bronx, designed to better understand and challenge the ongoing structural violence of the carceral state. Collaboratively written with members of the Morris Justice collective, we tell our story across three sections that outline the genesis of the project, describe our major commitments, and offers PAR and public science as a possible “intervention” in traditional university practice.

This paper provides an overview of the trials and successes in the development of an autonomous balloon instrument platform (smart balloon) and reviews scientific insights gained through its employment as a marker in a Lagrangian strategy during recent field experiments. The smart balloons are designed and constructed at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Air Resources Laboratory Field Research Division in collaboration with the University of Hawaii. In a 2004 field deployment a smart balloon carrying a miniature ozone sensor successfully crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Long Island, New York, to the African coast of Morocco. Significant progress has been made through field experiments such as this in our understanding of the relationships between the evolution of marine boundary layers and the chemistry of aerosol and gaseous constituents in clean and polluted air masses. Innovation in design and advances in instrument and communication technology have opened a dramatic new range of applications for the smart balloon in atmospheric research, including, for example, the interesting prospect of making observations very near the ocean surface in hurricanes and typhoons, which are not possible with research aircraft.

The Triple Helix framework focuses attention on institutional interactions within innovation systems. In particular, it is important to understand the nature of university–industry interactions such as the translation of university expertise to clinically and commercially viable innovations. This paper examines university and industry collaboration practices in the context of the innovative, entrepreneurial and translational research environment at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) and at the University at Buffalo–State University of New York. The findings highlight the importance of funding opportunities and networks. Collaboration predominantly assumes the form of consultancy, contract research and joint research. The benefits of consulting and contract research are increased knowledge production through publications, grant applications and patenting activities among BNMC scientists. Collaboration with industry through joint research is more likely to lead to entrepreneurial outcomes than any other effort to engage industry.

Policy makers and researchers are intrigued with but also frequently frustrated by each other. Although these differences are understandable and predictable, it is clear that research on a variety of educational issues has been both influential and valuable in the development of policy and practice. There is much to suggest that researchers and policy makers should be collaborating to improve student outcomes. There are important instances of sustained collaborations between educational researchers and educational policy makers. We summarize some of these efforts but describe in more detail the Education Finance Research Consortium, a long-standing collaboration between university-based researchers and the New York State Education Department. Given the current intense focus on the role of evidence in the development of education policy, some of the lessons from this collaboration may be useful to those seeking to expand the use of evidence in policies intended to improve student learning.

The paleontological Research Institution (PRI) was founded in 1932 by Gilbert Dennison Harris (1864-1952), professor of geology at Cornell University from 1894 to 1934. Approaching retirement, Harris was concerned about the fate of his large fossil collections and library, as well as the continuation of his two journals, Bulletins of American Paleontology (begun in 1895) and Palaeontographica Americana (begun in 1916). He therefore founded his own scientific enterprise, built a building for it behind his house, and received a charter as an educational institution from the State of New York in 1936. The Institution moved to its current location across Cayuga Lake from Cornell in 1968.

This paper aims to fill the gap by analyzing thecourse syllabi as well as interviews with Ph.D. students at a university in New York State. Task analysis and verbalreports of these students yielded significant insights that may contribute to more effective guidance for bothacademic writing instructors and curriculum developers in Taiwan.

This study describes the investigation of two factors that researchers have argued can significantly influence knowledge management, namely user expertise and the epistemic nature of the problem. It is surprising that while researchers consider these factors essential to successful KM, they have not, heretofore, been tested and evaluated. In order to test these two factors, the well accepted and widely referenced F&M model was employed as a benchmark framework. Building upon this framework and using both qualitative and quantitative research methods, data from the New York State Office of State Comptroller’s Local Government Services division was collected and analyzed. Based on the data collected from the agency, two modifications to a key knowledge management model, the Firestone and McElroy (2003) Model are proposed, as well as four recommendations for chief the knowledge officer in this organization.

D at the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade. He is the author of many books including Computer Atlas of Belgrade (Belgrade, 1976, second edition in Serbian and English as Research into the Urban Structure of Belgrade, Belgrade, 2002), Lessons of the Past (Belgrade, 1985), four volumes on the history of modern architecture in the world 1750 to present, Serbian 20th Century Architecture: From Historicisim to Second Modernism (Belgrade, 2003), and numerous articles published in scientific and professional journals. He has had one-man exhibitions of his experimental town-planning projects in Ljubljana (1977), Zagreb(1978), Belgrade (1978), Paris (1981), Dublin (1981), and at the Gallery of the Royal Institute of British Architects in London (1986). He has lectured at New York University, the Institute of Fine Arts (New York), Princeton University, Columbia University (New York), Ohio State University (Columbus), Athens Center of Ekistics, University of Cambridge (UK), and the Royal Institute of British Architects. Subject of the article is actual as never given the speed and volatility of data transfer and it’s processing. Authors have attended the topic of “digital transformation” multiple times, researching both negative and positive outcomes of this process. To define some of the potentially negative - alienation from other elements of life due to division of labor, personal and professional diviations. Some of the standing out positives - RnD and creative potential provided by virtual space, ability to effectively model technical and social processes, gamification as an additional tool of education development. This article is focused around the methodology of the elective education course “Constructing virtual worlds: game, science fiction and futurology” that was held in 2020/2021. Authors provide detailed description of how this course has been formed and method of its delivery to the audience. Being done as the dialogue between speakers and students, through the means of constant discussion, the course allowed not just to constantly receive and apply feedback to real-time, but also to form a thought process, reasonable for subjects in discussion. The course has provoked a lot of interest both in academic and industrial circles and has been discussed at multiple professional media platforms. Major results are ability to develop disciplines for new masters programs and programs of additional specialization. Authors are also confident that the course can be the beginning of new research and practical transdisciplinary fields aimed to explore vision and ideas of virtual space, cyber space and metaverse.

Science and technology are composed of several regimes of production, each having its own research axis and mode of diffusion - the disciplinary regime, transitory regime, utilitarian regime, and transverse regime. This article discusses research-technology, an example of the transverse regime of cognitive and artefact production. Research-technologists stand between science and engineering, between academia and enterprise. They design and build a special category of instrumentation (open-ended, multi-purpose generic instrumentation) and they operate out of an interstitial arena that lies between the usual poles of interest and organization - university, firms, the state, military etc. By virtue of their interstitial position and development of generic multi-audience devices, research-technologists exhibit a highly dynamic division of socio-cognitive labor. They sometimes engage in boundary crossings, in order to acquire data for instrument design or for purposes of instrument diffusion. Conversely, they sometimes close borders, protecting themselves from the exogenous pressures of short-term audience demand. One sees that selective boundary-crossing is not inconsistent with community closure! This article outlines the history of research-technology in Germany and the US, shows how the research-technology perspective differs from the new orthodoxy in the sociology of knowledge, and points to how a better grasp of the workings of the division of socio-cognitive labor may prove fruitful beyond the sociology of science and technology.
