AbstractThe canine photographs, videos, and photographic narratives of artist William Wegman frame questions of animal aesthetic agency. Over the past 30 years, Wegman's dog images shift in form and content in ways that reflect the artist's increasing anxiety over his control of the art-making process once he becomes identified, in his own words, as "the dog photographer". Wegman's dog images claim unique cultural prominence, appearing regularly in fine art museums as well as on broadcast television. But, as Wegman comes to use these images to document his own transition from dog photographer to dog breeder, these texts also reflect increasing restrictions on what I term the "pack aesthetics," or collaborative production of art and artistic agency, that distinguish some of the early pieces. Accounting for the correlations between multiple and mongrel dogs in Wegman's experimental video work and exclusively Weimaraner-breed dogs with human bodies in his recent work in large-format Polaroid photography, this article explores how Wegman's work with his "video dog star," his first Weimaraner dog Man Ray, troubles the erasure of the animal in contemporary conceptions of artistic authority.

Still, it has considerable setbacks being less en-route information and signs and pictures to symbolize the tracks en route to the place. This research is on developing a Location Based Service (LBS) application that utilizes A Star Algorithm. This application can detect object position and generates the shortest effective routes to the designated spot by using A Star Algorithm's active reaction to the entitled class. This research later reveals an application named "Asia Heritage." It is a Photographic application that helps and gives the user the features of available photo-on spots, location, attractions, detailed information, and creative editing for a unique and magnifying experience for each user.

Abstract. Astronauts on board the International Space Station (ISS) have taken thousands of high-resolution colour photographs of the aurora, which could be made useful for research if their pointing information could be reconstructed. We describe a method to do this using the star field in the images, and how the reconstructed pointing can then be used to georeference the images to a similar level of accuracy in existing all-sky camera images. We have used this method to make georeferenced auroral images taken from the ISS available and here describe the resulting data set, processing software, and how to access them.

RESUMO:Neste trabalho faremos uma apresentação e revisão bibliográfica do percurso histórico da semiótica francesa, que possibilita abordagem da imagem científica. Ilustraremos com uma breve análise de imagens científicas apresentadas em dois filmes da franquia Star Wars: a primeira, fotografia de Star Wars Episódio I: A Ameaça Fantasma (1999), e a segunda, de Star Wars Episódio III: A Vingança dos Sith (2005), ambos dirigidos por George Lucas. Para isso, utilizaremos ferramentas do arcabouço teórico proposto pelos semioticistas Jean-François Bordron (2013), Jacques Fontanille (2007) e Maria Giulia Dondero (2010a). Procuramos analisar o universo visual dos filmes deStar Wars, já que as narrativas ocorrem em uma galáxiafictícia e diversas viagens pelo espaço sideral são constantemente apresentadas. Assim, abordaremos a vulgarização a ser feita de determinadas imagens científicas para o público-alvo, a fim de que possam ser compreendidas. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: cinema; fotografia; semiótica; Star Wars. ABSTRACT:In this work we will present a bibliographical review and presentation of the historical of the French semiotics that allows to approach the scientific image. We will illustrate with a brief analysis of scientific images presented in two Star Wars franchise films: the first photograph of Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace (1999) and the second of StarWars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith (2005), both directed by George Lucas. To that end, we will use tools from the theoretical framework proposed by the Semioticists Jean-François Bordron (2009), Jacques Fontanille (2007) and Maria Giulia Dondero (2010a). We will try to analyze the visual universe of the Star Wars films, since the narratives occur in a fictitious galaxy and several sideways space travels are constantly presented, thus, we will approach the vulgarization to be made of certain scientific images for the target audience so that they can be understood. Photography of the southern hemisphere for the Second Cape Photographic Catalogue (CPC2) was commenced in 1962 by R H Stoy, HM Astronomer at the Cape. During the following ten years nearly 6000 plates, each having two exposures and covering 4° × 4° with fourfold corner to centre overlap were obtained. All plates have been measured on the GALAXY measuring machine at the Royal Greenwich Observatory under the general direction of W Nicholson. A preliminary catalogue giving positions and magnitudes of more than 50 000 stars in the Cape Astrographic zone (−40° to −52°) has already been published (Nicholson et al. 1984), together with details of the programme. Measurement of the plates, initial identification of star images appearing on all overlapping plates, and photographic photometry have been carried out at RGO; the subseqent astrometric data reduction is being performed at Hamburg Observatory.

The first century of non-visual astronomical image detection in Hungary was devoted exclusively to photography. The most famous Hungarian astronomers and astrophysicists of the last century were the pioneers of astrophotography too. The very first exhaustive description of photography as a scientific method was the one by Konkoly-Thege about astronomical photography in 1887. In his book one can find some interesting images printed of the plates taken by his friend and colleague, the enthusiastic astrophotographer J. Gothard, who was the first to demonstrate that the well-known bright planetary in Lyra (M 57 or the Ring Nebula) contains an extremely faint central star. His discovery, which opened new fields for astrophysics, was contested for a long time because his foreign contemporaries were unable to repeat this feat of arms.

Aerial surveillance could be a useful tool for early detection and quantification of plant diseases, however, there are often confounding effects of other types of plant stress. Stemphylium leaf blight (SLB), caused by the fungus Stemphylium vesicarium, is a damaging foliar disease of onion. Studies were conducted to determine if near-infrared photographic images could be used to accurately assess SLB severity in onion research trials in the Holland Marsh in Ontario, Canada. The site was selected for its uniform soil and level topography. Aerial photographs were taken in 2015 and 2016 using an Xnite-Canon SX230NDVI with a near-infrared filter, mounted on a modified Cine Star—8 MK Heavy Lift RTF octocopter UAV. Images were taken at 15–20 m above the ground, providing an average of 0.5 cm/pixel and a field of view of 15 × 20 m. Photography and ground assessments of disease were carried out on the same day. NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index), green NDVI, chlorophyll index and plant senescence reflective index (PSRI) were calculated from the images. There were differences in SLB incidence and severity in the field plots and differences in the vegetative indices among the treatments, but there were no correlations between disease assessments and any of the indices.

AbstractChanges in the double star database are highlighted, describing various methods of observation (both historically and those of the past few years) and their effectiveness in different regimes of separation space. The various niches for wide- and narrow-field work as they apply to double and multiple stars are examined and the different types of information which each can provide are described. Despite the significant growth of the double star database, much can still be done, such as finding lost pairs, filling in missing parameters so that observing programs can select all stars appropriate to their capabilities, or providing at least gross kinematic descriptions. After more than 20 years of successful work, speckle interferometry and conventional CCD astrometry have replaced filar micrometry and photography as preferred classical techniques. Indeed, most work in filar micrometry is now being done by amateurs. Work on pairs described as neglected in the last major WDS data release (2001) is given as a specific example. Finally, the continued need to publish data in classical double star parameters is also discussed.

The remarkable capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze enormous quantities of information and create precise forecasts has led to its growing prominence in the field of scientific Astrophysics. Stellar categorization is the process by which stars are sorted according to the characteristics revealed by their spectra. To analyze the star's electromagnetic radiation, a diffraction or prism screen separates it into a spectrum with an assortment of hues and spectral lines used to categorize the star. Star wavelengths are an extremely important piece of data for space-based photography studies. Employing data from over 100,000 cases and a variety of AI models, this study demonstrates how to categorize stellar properties as either a Galaxy or a Star. This paper used the multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network (NN) for stellar classification. The MLP is applied in 18 features. This paper showed the correlation between these features. This paper achieved 97% accuracy from the MLP model. This study compared various optimizers to show the best optimizer. The Adagrad optimizer is the best optimizer due to getting the highest validation accuracy.

In this paper I mobilize Funny Face (dir. Stanley Donen, 1956) to examine the intertextual nexus between fashion, fashion photography, and film. Set in New York City and Paris, with costume design by Hubert de Givenchy and Edith Head, the film is a latter day telling of the Pygmalion myth, such that photographer Dick Avery (Fred Astaire) and Maggie Prescott (Kay Thompson), the dictatorial Fashion Editor of Quality, take up the challenge of converting Jo Stockton (Audrey Hepburn), whom they regard as an unprepossessing bookstore intellectual, into a top model. Thus I analyze how a film that is more generally regarded as a benchmark in the Hollywood musical for its exuberant use of colour and songs is, more particularly, a cinematic locus for both the mediation and mediatization of fashionable identities. To this end, I assess how the film elaborates the power of the fashion industry as a matter of social practice in regards to Foucauldian discourse and the related concept of the énoncé, or event/statement. Thus I evince I two events/statements — “Think Pink!” and “Bonjour Paris” — to discuss in particular the relationship of style to national identities and the need or desire for America to assert cultural leadership in fashion photography, art, and design over France in the context of 1950s Cold War politics. By comparison, I enlist the statements, “Take the Picture!” and “A Bird of Paradise,” to examine respectively the dynamic of looking/gazing between the fashion photographer and designer and their (in this case) female models, the nexus between star designing, clothing, and gender identity, and what Foucault calls assujetissement — subjection — which connotes the dual process of Jo’s subordination as well as the act of her becoming or “being made” a subject according to a system of power.

The research purposes to see the netnography that occurs in the WTSM community in WAG about street photography. In this research, researchers used a virtual ethnographic approach. Virtual ethnography is an ethnographic method used to observe social phenomena and or user culture in cyberspace. Communication in the WAG Community WTSM is a social interaction that occurs in an open, flexible, and dynamic way. Every day WTSM Community members interact with each other, discuss with each other. This makes the knowledge of WTSM Community members grow, especially in the field of street photography. The social integration that occurs in the WTSM Community WAG can be seen from the social activities carried out by fellow members, these mutual help activities build good integration among members. Based on the contents of the WAG conversation, the WTSM Community has a star pattern communication pattern, each member communicates with each other without any relationship restrictions between members, so that each member is free to communicate with all members.

Some years ago, a colleague from another institution told me how much she was looking forward to screening Nasser 56 in her introductory Middle East history course. Students had just finished reading about the Nasser era, and the screening of Muhamad Fadel's stylish biopic starring the charismatic film star Ahmed Zaki would serve as an enjoyable way to round out the unit. I was surprised, not at my colleague's use of the film in her class, but at her timing. Released in 1996, Nasser 56 is very much the product of the Mubarak era. It offers rich opportunities to discuss the particular challenges Egypt faced in the 1990s and how this nostalgic look back at a triumphant moment in Gamal Abdel Nasser's (Jamal ʿAbd al-Nasir's) presidency was marshalled to animate an economically and politically fraught period. Its celebration of ʿAbd al-Nasir as an effective and caring patriarch to the nation could be interpreted as an endorsement of Egypt's authoritarian political system. However, the film is less useful as an explication of ʿAbd al-Nasir as a political figure, or of 1950s Egypt.

Somewhat more than a century after its introduction for the purpose of discovering minor planets, photography is now rapidly giving way to the CCD as the technology of choice for observing these bodies. A CCD has been used in scanning mode in the University of Arizona's ‘Spacewatch’ program for the discovery of minor planets since as long ago as 1984 (Gehrels 1984, Gehrels et al. 1986), while a CCD in stare mode was first applied as a matter of routine to an established observing program for astrometric follow-up in 1989—that at the Oak Ridge Observatory in Massachusetts (McCrosky 1990). After its initial 1984–1986 success, Spacewatch was modified with the help of a larger CCD and improved computer software and with the adoption of the particular mission of searching for NEOs, or minor planets (and comets) that pass close to the earth (Rabinowitz 1991, Scotti 1994). The Oak Ridge program utilizes a 1.5-m reflector, and the first CCD observations were reduced using the Astrographic Catalogue, the mainstay of the Oak Ridge photographic program back to its inauguration in 1972, as well as of other older photographic programs in which the fields observed were significantly less than 1° across. Within months, the availability, on CD-ROMs, of the STScI Guide Star Catalogue (Villard 1989) effectively consigned the venerable AC to the scrap-heap, and the rapid development of ready-made and relatively inexpensive CCD systems (e.g., di Cicco 1992) has recently increased the volume of CCD astrometry considerably, allowing it to be conveniently and reliably carried out, even by amateur astronomers. At the present time, very nearly 50 percent of the astrometric observations, typically 6000, published each month in the Minor Planet Center's Minor Planet Circulars are obtained by means of a CCD.

The measure of distances is a recurring theme in astrophysics. The interpretation of the light coming from a luminous object in the sky can be very different depending on the distance of the object. Two stars or galaxies may each have a different real brightness, although they may look similar. The correct measures were determined by women computers a century ago. Special mention is due to Williamina Fleming, who supervised an observatory for 30 years and worked on the first system to classify stars by spectrum. Antonia Maury helped locate the first double star and developed a new star classification system. Henrietta Leavitt determined a law to calculate stellar distances. The most famous of the Harvard computers was Annie Jump Cannon. An expert in photography, she catalogued over 350,000 stars and expanded the classification system used today, but it was Henrietta Leavitt who left an indelible mark by discovering a law for the determination of stellar distances. In the same period, Italian women computers began to collaborate in observatories, but their tracks are obfuscated.

At present it is evident that the stability of a celestial coordinates system with an accuracy of at least per century, with respect to an internal frame can be derived only from VLBI observations of compact extragalactic radio sources. At the same time it is expected that the need for improved stars' coordinates will be strongly felt at least up to the end of this century, because stars are important and more convenient observational objects then very weak extragalactic sources or artificial Earth satellites (AES). One therefore wonders if one can use the high precision and stability of the radio astrometric reference frame to stabilize and improve the reference frame given by star catalogues. The problem of the relationship between these systems has so far been investigated in the form of determining the parameters of their mutual orientation, and/or studying systematic errors of star catalogues (Gubanov, 1978; Gubanov and Kumkova, 1978, 1981). This problem has been attacked by direct photography of several optically identified radio sources or VLBI observations of few radio stars. The present paper shows the feasibility of determining the place of any star of sufficient magnitude with reference to the radio astrometric frame, as given by extragalactic source positions (Gubanov, 1983). This is done by introducing an AES, equipped with radio signal for VLBI observations and a corner reflector for laser ranging, which can be observed by radio methods as well as optically (Gubanov, 1976). This satellite should also be bright enough in the reflected sun's light to be observed in the star field with a precision photoelectric satellite camera.

We present a new technique in double star photography leading to high accuracy measurements in amateur-size instruments. The trailing method has been improved by the use of a chopper that cuts the trail into a number of segments. The chopper period is accurately known, so it is the length of each segment on the plate. In this way the scale factor is measured in each exposure. Fine-grain films, such as hyper-sensitized Kodak 2415, are used and all measurements are performed at the microscope. The same technique may also be applied to CCD cameras. A statistical analysis of errors shows that Δθ ≤ 30′ and Δρ/ρ ≈ 0.01 for most binaries with ρ ≥ 3″. This method has been applied to professional-amateur joint programs dealing with multiple systems with variable components and a survey of poorly-observed wide binaries.

Abstract Through a close textual analysis of Dolor y Gloria (dir. Pedro Almodóvar 2019), Todos lo Saben (dir. Asghar Farhadi 2018), and cross-media promotions, this article argues that through costuming, facial hair, and the body, Antonio Banderas and Javier Bardem offer intersecting, but diverging performances of visibly ageing masculinity. On screen, the spectator is offered sensitive and emotional explorations of Spanish masculine identities that represent Banderas and Bardem as men forced to sacrifice those they love. Conversely, off screen in editorial photography and on the red carpet, their star-celebrity representations are characterized by flux and difference. Bardem's persona offers an aspirational representation of heteronormative stability, whereas Banderas’ image is dominated by instability, playfulness, and striving to retain his youthful sex appeal.

This article argues that Maurice Blanchot is a significant presence in Bernard Stiegler's Technics and Time series. The article first sets out Stiegler's invocation of the Blanchotian ‘change of epoch’ in the first volume, which attempts to situate Blanchot within the horizon of technics. I argue Blanchot's disaster is a hidden element in Stiegler's play on the motifs of the star and catastrophe. The article then traces how these motifs emerge in the second and third volumes, in which the technical forms of photography and cinema become more important and where the motifs are woven together through reference to works by Roland Barthes, D. W. Winnicott and Federico Fellini. Stiegler filters these references to apparently disparate figures through Blanchot's analyses of writing and temporality. Tracing both overt and unacknowledged references to Blanchot in Stiegler's text, I conclude that Stiegler's use of Blanchot destabilizes his conceptions of time and epochality.

Abstract This article examines ways of seeing China in Isaac Julien's nine-screen film installation Ten Thousand Waves (2010), which represents a migratory aesthetic based on evocative translocality and mobile spectatorship. As Julien reconstructs the legend of compassionate Mazu (played by Maggie Cheung) and memories of Old and New Shanghai (both enacted by Zhao Tao), his screen images and sounds enter a constant circulation and form an intriguing multidirectional dialogue across a variety of media and genres: cinema, art photography, calligraphy, painting, poetry, and star performance. In addition to evaluating new concepts and new techniques at work in the cross-fertilization of cinema and other visual media in the new millennium, this article complicates Julien's celebrated political poetics by highlighting his problematic reception by ethnic Chinese spectators and by reckoning with the specter of orientalism that refuses to go away despite his previously audacious repudiation of stereotypes and clichés and his professed engagement with cosmopolitanism and globalization.

AbstractThe University of Surrey is situated on the northern slopes of Stag Hill, below Guildford Cathedral, which occupies the summit. During the investigation for the design of the University, it became apparent that the site was underlain by a large landslip, 500 m wide from east to west and extending 160 m from rear scarp to toe. Considerable effort was made to establish its geometry and extent (Skempton & Petley (1967), and Morgenstern & Tchalenko (1967)).In recent years it was realised that because the construction of the Cathedral extended over a long period of time, the likelihood of Stag Hill being covered by oblique aerial photography would be high. Some forty oblique aerial photographs, spanning the period 1949 to 1982, were collected and analysed together with vertical aerial photographs and topographic maps.Although the landslip is visible on vertical aerial photographs, individual elements are not easily identified. Using oblique photography, in particular that in which recognition of subdued topography has been enhanced by low sun angles, up to six phases of landslipping were identified.This paper uses this example to demonstrate the usefulness of aerial photography in site investigation and in particular the value of oblique photography, a topic which receives little attention in BS 5930:1981 considering how cost effective this tool can be.

Abstract. As the satellite latitude and camera temperature changes, temperature distortion in orbit makes the optical axis of the star sensor drifts slowly in the satellite body coordinate system, and the attitude measurement system contains low frequency errors that cannot be ignored. Low frequency errors are systematic in short periods, and occasional in long periods, which cause an error of a few minutes, so as to greatly reduce the positioning accuracy without control points of satellite photography. Traditional geometric calibration can only eliminate system errors caused by changes in optics in sensor platform and mechanical structures and etc., and cannot reduce the effect of low-frequency errors. An integrated static and dynamic geometric calibration method based on optical surveying and mapping satellites is proposed in this paper. The attitude system error and low frequency error are effectively detected by establishing a correction model of low frequency errors and analyzing the effective calibration process of traditional on-orbit calibration and dynamic calibration. Finally, relevant experiments are performed with image from satellite TIANHUI-1 in seven test fields, which verifies that this low-frequency error compensation method is correct and effective.

When the television drama series The Women's Prison (Sijin al-Nisā’) was aired in Egypt during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan in 2014 (covering thirty episodes, each around 30 to 40 minutes), it became a hit and attracted a huge audience (Fig. 1). This was partly due to the popularity of its major theme, which focused on women and crime through characters inhabiting the famous al-Qanatir al-Khayriyya women's prison, located on the outskirts of Cairo. Another reason for its success was the group of creative women who produced it: director Kamla Abu-Zikri, scriptwriter Maryam Naʿum, art director Shirin Farghal, costume designer Rim al-ʿAdil, and director of photography Nancy ʿAbd al-Fattah. Abu-Zikri and Naʿum had collaborated on earlier works, most notably for their 2009 acclaimed film One-Zero (Wahid-Sifr) and the drama series Zaat, adapted from a famous novel of the same name by the veteran Egyptian writer Sonallah Ibrahim, which aired during Ramadan in 2013. Moreover, the key female role in both Zaat and The Women's Prison was played by the popular star actress Nelly Karim, guaranteeing high viewing rates.

The authors of this paper have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to assist Dr. Robert Ballard of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute and the Quest Group in the discovery and analysis of the Bismarck wreck in June 1989. Although we did not participate in Dr. Ballard's expedition aboard the Star Hercules, we gave advice and counsel to his personnel and did much of the photo interpretation. We were greatly aided by two of the Bismarck survivors, former German Ambassador Baron von M(Jllenheim-Rechberg (former LCDR, German Navy), the senior surviving officer, whom we assisted in the republishing of his book, and Mr. Josef Statz, who was the sole survivor from the Damage Control Central on the Bismarck[1]. 3 These two men worked tirelessly with the authors and assisted in the preparation of drawings by Mr. Thomas Webb of various views of the damaged Bismarck, which shows her just before her capsizing. These views of the damaged Bismarck were prepared after many hours of intensive study of the videotapes and still photography brought back by Dr. Ballard's team from the wreck site some 15 317 ft below the water surface, 600 miles west of Brest, France. A number of these views have been published in various magazine articles and books [2–5].

This study identifies the destination attributes of sustainable urban waterfronts that are frequently mentioned in tourists’ online reviews. We analyzed the influence of these attributes on tourists’ ratings based on stimuli–organism–response theory, and the associations between these destination attributes. The online reviews (both text reviews and star ratings) from TripAdvisor and Google Maps of the sustainable waterfront destinations of the Liuchuan and Luchuan rivers in Taichung city (Taiwan) were collected and analyzed through text and data mining. Destination attributes were grouped into two types: sustainable landscapes (aesthetics, water resource rehabilitation, sustainable lighting, emotional experiences, and low-impact development waterfronts) and sustainable recreational spaces (leisure activities, festivals, inclusive destinations, photography, and tourist experiences). Two destination attributes common to-- both types were identified: nightscapes and waterfronts. These attributes predicted tourists’ ratings through support vector machine analysis. Sensitivity analysis revealed that sustainable landscape-type attributes had a greater impact on tourists’ ratings than the sustainable recreational space type. In addition, three important association rules between twelve attributes were identified and these helped provide information pattern combination attributes from tourists’ comments with support and confidence for the destination attributes. These findings will contribute to urban planning and design in relation to sustainable waterfront destinations. They highlight the need for planners to consider both tourists’ landscapes and recreational needs in order to achieve economic and ecological sustainability.

Petroglyph National Monument, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, is dedicated solely to preserving an estimated 17,000 carvings on rock (petroglyphs) made by ancestral and historic Native Americans, early colonists and regional visitors. Among the images that recur along the 17 miles of volcanic escarpment is a four-pointed star, sometimes called the ‘star-being’ or ‘star-head’ by locals and park guides, as it usually involves some degree of anthropomorphism. This image may be as simple as a circle with four symmetrically disposed points and no other details to as elaborate as the basic star-head with facial features, crown and body with, perhaps, limbs holding objects – a cane, staff, or club. This project involved a photographic field survey of the ‘star-head’ image in the Monument. Two teams of two and three surveyors combed the escarpment rock (height ranging from 10m - 100m high) and identified and photographed approximately 100 ‘star-head’ images. Results include a classification of ‘star-head’ images according to level of detail, size of images, and associations with other petroglyphs and archaeological remains. The literature review discusses the possible role of this icon as a war symbol and a Venus deity and provides a rough time line of their creation and cultural associations.

The first chapter of Alison Ravenscroft’s The Postcolonial Eye: White Australian Desire and the Visual Field of Race begins with a description of a photograph, property of the South Australian Museum, series AA346. This photograph is one of thousands taken during the Board for Anthropological Research’s Harvard and Adelaide Universities’ 1938 expedition. In it, two Murri girls stare at us, one with a shaved head, the other wearing a card marked ‘N1474’. What we see in this photograph, the violence of colonial history, is striking, but equally (perhaps more) striking, Ravenscroft suggests, is what we fail to see. “Who were these girls and what happened to them after the camera closed its eye and the photographer turned away?” she asks (7). Although we can see signs of colonial subject formation—exemplified by the name ‘N1474’—no matter how closely we look, we cannot see the girls’ fate, nor the fate of the researcher behind the camera, the one “who looked upon an image from which he excluded himself but in which he was implicated nevertheless” (7). Furthermore, “How [are we] to bring such a scene into writing?” Ravenscroft asks, implicating herself (as well as us, as readers of cultural studies and co-viewers of this photograph) in the categorical violence perpetrated by the invisible photographer (7).

This essay explores the rich archive of photographer Nemai Ghosh whose production stills on the sets of Satyajit Ray kept his cinema alive in popular memory. While it might appear that Ghosh was overwhelmed by the vision of Satyajit Ray, the essay explores how the documentary impulse in his work created continuity as well as rupture with the cinema of Ray and others in Bengal. Nemai Ghosh’s forte lay in capturing candid moments of actors just before and after filming on the sets. These interstitial moments caught between the vision of the director and the photographer shooting a production still could be used to tease out other deeper meanings about star personas. As we look through Nemai Ghosh’s larger body of work, particularly at images which may not have found public circulation as film stills, we see other kinds of mediations between the photographer, the camera and his subjects. By extricating still frames out of motion, Ghosh’s photographs invite us to contemplate certain tensions between female actors, their roles and their extra cinematic lives. Recollections of these stars are layered by stories, anecdotes and popular myths. In this essay, I explore what it might mean to look back at Nemai Ghosh’s images through the prism of these overlapping memories.

AbstractWe propose an efficient, specific method for estimating camera parameters from a single starry night image. Such an image consists of a collection of disks representing stars, so traditional estimation methods for common pictures do not work. Our method uses a database, a star catalog, that stores the positions of stars on the celestial sphere. Our method computes magnitudes (i.e., brightnesses) of stars in the input image and uses them to find the corresponding stars in the star catalog. Camera parameters can then be estimated by a simple geometric calculation. Our method is over ten times faster and more accurate than a previous method.

Green space has a vital role in the community’s health and well-being. Forest bathing is an effective method of enjoying the forest atmosphere through physical activity or relaxing in a forest landscape. However, until now, no one has declared the benefits of forest therapy in Indonesia. This study clarifies the physiological and psychological effects of walking in a campus landscape. This research was conducted using experimental methods through physical activity survey, self-report questionnaires, Visitor Employed Photography (VEP), and automatic classification based on the image annotation API. The experiment was conducted in a park and an arboretum, and thirty-two young university subjects were tested. The participants walked for fifteen minutes on walking routes and district roads. Their blood pressure was measured before and after walking, and their heart rate was measured continuously. During the walk, the subjects took photographs of striking scenes using the Visitor Employed Photography method. Profile of Mood States (POMS) and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) were used to evaluate the psychological responses. Walking in the campus landscape resulted in a lower heart rate, less negative moods, and less anxiety than walking on the district road. Out of 837 photographs, 45% were taken from the Academic Event Plaza, 41.5% from the Arboretum, and the remaining 13.5% from district road, Jalan Raya Dramaga. Two main groups of campus green spaces included man-made landscape consisting of road surface, buildings, plant organs, stairs, and terrestrial plants; and natural landscape consisting of sky, trees, flowers, clouds, and plant community. This study found that walking in campus green space induced physiological and psychological health benefits and prominent landscape elements supported the green campus.

Photoelectric photometry is inherently much more accurate than photographic work. But large time variations of airglow, inaccurate elimination of bright stars, and the problematic adding-up of different scans may destroy this advantage in the case of surface photometry. On the other hand, the low internal accuracy of photographic photometry and its problematic nonlinearity can be overcome by a sufficient number of plates and by careful photoelectric calibrations. Such measures allow us to take full advantage of the high homogeneity of super-wide-angle photographs over extremely large areas, their global calibration, and their direct imaging. When I started this work, no charge-coupled device or similar device was available. But even today, with such detectors problems would arise for surface photometry in flat-fielding, zero-points, and bright star elimination. Our camera (Schlosser and Schmidt-Kaler 1977) followed the Henyey-Greenstein design with a f/4.3 Zeiss UV-Sonnar lens (with constant focus from 2000 Å up to 10000 Å) and f/0.4 spherical mirror of 30 cm ⊘, giving an effective f=18 mm. The angular resolution, limited by optics and plate, is 4′ in the center, 7′ in the average, and about 20′ at the edges of the field of view (=140°).

AbstractOver 700 photographs of the inner zodiacal light were taken from the Clementine spacecraft while it was in orbit around the Moon. These exposures were taken with the 28° x 43° field-of-view Star Tracker camera and the 4.2° x 5.6° field-of-view UV/Vis camera. The images were made while the Clementine spacecraft was on the dark side of the Moon such that the Sun was occulted. Most of the photos were taken at the highest possible sensitivity and longest exposure time (0.7 sec) in order to detect an expected weak lunar horizon glow. Consequently, many of the photos are over exposed where the zodiacal light is the brightest. However, a subset of photos were purposefully taken with a range of exposure times to reveal the entire inner zodiacal light structure, both in latitude and longitude, to within 1° of the Sun. These Star Tracker images show the lenticular shape of the inner zodiacal light. When work to correct the images to absolute photometry is concluded, the detailed structure of the entire inner zodiacal light will be derived.

This work covers current questions on studying structural changes in the wall of the abdominal aorta during the modelled long-term immobilization stress against vagotonia. The purpose of this study was to reveal the effect of prolonged vagotonia on the structure of the wall of the abdominal aorta in rats in the experiment. The studies were performed on three comparable groups of hundred-day Wistar rats, which were exposed to immobilization stress and vagotonia for a period of 10 days. Immobilization was chosen as a method to induce stress model. The rats were placed into a special plastic box, in this way limiting their movements for four hours at room temperature. Vagotonia was modelled by the administration of pyridostigmine bromide, reversible anticholinesterase. Histological preparations of the abdominal aorta were studied by x40, x100, x400 magnification using the Primo Star 5 microscope (Carl Zeiss, FRG) followed by photography of microscopic images. Computer morphometry was performed with x100 and x400 magnification and then the image were displayed on the computer monitor using the DVR and AxioVision image analysis software (Rel.4.8.2) in μm. We assessed the thickness of the subendothelial layer, and namely an internal elastic membrane and media. The ratio of the extent of the abdominal aorta lumen to the vascular wall was calculated in the Adobe Photoshop program by the A. A. Glagoliev method through overlaying of point grids on sections, the results were converted into percentages. The studies were carried out in five fields of five different sections in each rat. The results of the variation analysis of the morphological data obtained have revealed some features of restructuring the vascular wall of the abdominal aorta due to prolonged immobilization stress accompanied by vagotonia. It has been found out that prolonged exposure of hundred-day Wistar rats to immobilization stress leads to a decrease in thickness and certain morphological changes in all layers of the abdominal aorta wall and a decrease in the percentage of the component of the vessel wall. When accompanied by prolonged immobilization and vagotonia, preservation of the endothelial layer of the abdominal aorta was observed against the background of a decrease in intimal thickness and degenerative cell changes, as well as media thickening and focal changes in adventitia.

There is a long sequence of photographs in the Cavendish Laboratory showing the research students and staff every year from 1897; the 1902 photograph has J.J. Thomson in the middle, and includes Charles Francis Mott and Lilian Mary Reynolds, who were married in 1904 and whose son was Nevill Francis Mott. Charles was unlucky in his research project, which gave him no encouragement to continue, but he had a successful career, first as senior science master at Giggleswick, and then as Director of Education in the north–west of England, ultimately as Director for Liverpool. Miss Reynolds had been a star pupil of Cheltenham Ladie's College and at Cambridge was the best woman mathematician of her year, being classed equal with the eleventh wrangler. She was not at home in experimental physics—her heart was in applied mathematics—and after marriage, as her two children grew up, she devoted herself to social work. It is clear, from the loving memoir that her husband wrote and had published privately after her death, that she retained an active intelligence to the end.

The first planetary nebula was discovered by Messier in 1794. But for some reasons it has not been studied detail for a long time, especially for the central star Of planetary nebula. The primary research for these objects showed that the lifetime of a planetary nebula is about 5 104 years, but in this period the luminosity of central star varies from 63 L⊙ to nearly 3.5 104L⊙ and then decrease to 100 L⊙; its temperature changes from 3.4 104 to 105K and then begins to decrease (Seaton 1966). The radius of central stars also have fast varies in planetary nebula phase. For these reasons we consider that in the planetary nebula phase the activities of central star is very drastic and the result of these activities must cause some variation at the surface of central star witch may be detected on the earth, especially for the surface light variations. Some observers have been trying to find the luminosity variations in central stars. But until now no one has made systematical survey for these. Since the different authors used different instruments amd different processing methods at different places which may be caused a lot of uncertainty in the photometry of planetary nebulae and central stars. So it is hard to decide whether the differences between the authors or the essential variations of the objects is responsible of the observing differences. Therefore, we have selected over fifty planetary nebulae to observe for a long period at Beijing Observatory using the same instrument and the same processing method. From these observations we may determine the light variations and the brightness of the planetary nebulae and central stars more correctly.

The Schmidt telescope (360/333/625 mm) of the Abastumani Observatory is used for photographic observations. It provides a field of 7.3° (80 mm) and a non-vignetted field of 4° (44 mm). For an astronomic film of medium sensitivity (DIN 20, ASA 70) the limiting exposure time is 7–8 m and the limiting magnitude is 16.5. For fine grain emulsions, a 15 m exposure time provides the limiting magnitude of 18.0. Since 1961 systematic photographic (mainly photovisual) observations have been carried out, within the International Cooperation Program of the Supernova Patrol in the direction of 24 selected fields. During a night an average of 10 exposures are taken. About 10,000 exposures have been obtained up to now and 30 Supernovae discovered, of which 10 were first identified in Abastumani (Chuadze 1967; Kimeridze 1971, 1979; Kimeridze et al. 1984, 1988, 1989a, b) In parallel with the patrol observations, photovisual and photographic (sometimes UBV) photometry was performed for 9 discovered Supernovae. The observations are still continuing.

We have made a survey of Hα-emission stars in the CMa R1 region with the 105cm Schmidt telescope at the Kiso Observatory. In an area of about 37 square degrees, a total of 107 Hα-emission stars (V = 6-15 mag.) was found, and, for all of them, the photographic photometry in the UBV system has been carried out.
