Streszczenie:
This thesis studies advanced error control schemes using turbo-like codes, turbo-like coded modulations, turbo hybrid-ARQ (Automatic Repeat reQuest) schemes, and rate compatible puncturing techniques for reliable and adaptive commercial and tactical spread-spectrum communications, especially for code-division multiple access (CDMA) cellular systems and direct-sequence (DS) and frequency-hopping (FH) anti-jam systems. Furthermore, we utilize both the maximum-likelihood (ML) bounding techniques and convergence analysis to design and analyze various turbo-like coding schemes that show different behaviors in error performance from conventional trellis coding schemes. In the area of DS-CPM, we propose a DS concatenated coded CPM system for pulse-noise jamming channels and an anti-jam iterative receiver utilizing jammer state information. We also design a mixed concatenated CPM system that mixes CPM schemes with different convergence characteristics. In addition, we present the ML bound and convergence analysis for the jamming channel. In the area of FH-CPM, we propose anti-jam serially concatenated slow FH-CPM systems, whose phase is continuous during each hop interval, along with coherent and non-coherent iterative receivers. We also propose an iterative jamming estimation technique for the iterative receiver. In the area of multi-h CPM, we propose a power- and bandwidth-efficient serially concatenated multi-h CPM along with an appropriate iterative receiver structure. Serially concatenated multi-h CPM is shown to outperform single-h CPM. To design adaptive and versatile error control schemes using turbo-like codes for packet-data networks, we propose turbo hybrid-ARQ (HARQ) and rate compatible puncturing techniques for retransmission. In the area of turbo hybrid-ARQ, we propose a Type-I turbo HARQ scheme using a concatenated RS-turbo code and a packet combining technique for W-CDMA system to improve the performance of error and decoding latency. The W-CDMA system including the fast power control and coherent Rake receiver with a channel estimation technique for multipath fading channels is considered. Finally, in the area of rate compatible punctured turbo-like codes, we propose rate compatible punctured turbo (RCPT) codes and rate compatible punctured serially concatenated convolutional (RCPS) codes along with their puncturing methods. In addition, we propose Type-II RCPT-HARQ and RCPS-HARQ schemes to perform an efficient incremental redundancy retransmission.

Streszczenie:
Anthropogenic underwater noise has been shown to have a negative impact on marine life. Acoustic data transmissions have also been shown to cause behavioural responses in marine mammals. A promising approach to address these issues is through reducing the power of acoustic data transmissions. Firstly, limiting the maximum acoustic transmit power to a safe limit that causes no injury, and secondly, reducing the radius of the discomfort zone whilst maximising the receivable range. The discomfort zone is dependent on the signal design as well as the signal power. To achieve these aims requires a signal and receiver design capable of synchronisation and data reception at low-received-SNR, down to around −15 dB, with Doppler effects. These requirements lead to very high-ratio spread-spectrum signaling with efficient modulation to maximise data rate, which necessitates effective Doppler correction in the receiver structure. This thesis examines the state-of-the-art in this area and investigates the design, development and implementation of a suitable signal and receiver structure, with experimental validation in a variety of real-world channels. Data signals are designed around m-ary orthogonal signaling based on bandlimited carrierless PN sequences to create an M-ary Orthogonal Code Keying (M-OCK) modulation scheme. Synchronisation signal structures combining the energy of multiple unique PN symbols are shown to outperform single PN sequences of the same bandwidth and duration in channels with low SNR and significant Doppler effects. Signals and receiver structures are shown to be capable of reliable communications with band of 8 kHz to 16 kHz and transmit power limited to less than 170.8 dB re 1 μPa @ 1m, or 1W of acoustic power, over ranges of 10 km in sea trials, with low-received-SNR below −10 dB, at data rates of up to 140.69 bit/s. Channel recordings with AWGN demonstrated limits of signal and receiver performance of BER 10−3 at −14 dB for 35.63 bit/s, and −8.5 dB for 106.92 bit/s. Piloted study of multipath exploitation showed this performance could be improved to −10.5 dB for 106.92 bit/s by combining the energy of two arrival paths. Doppler compensation techniques are explored with experimental validation showing synchronisation and data demodulation at velocities over ranges of ±2.7m/s. Non-binary low density parity check (LDPC) error correction coding with M-OCK signals is investigated showing improved performance over Reed-Solomon (RS) coding of equivalent code rate in simulations and experiments in real underwater channels. The receiver structures are implemented on an Android mobile device with experiments showing live real-time synchronisation and data demodulation of signals transmitted through an underwater channel.

Streszczenie:
The use of practically non-repeating spreading codes to generate sequence-based spread spectrum waveforms is a strong method to improve transmission security, by limiting an observers opportunity to cross-correlate snapshots of the signal into a coherent gain. Such time-varying codes, particularly when used to define multi-bit resolution arbitrary-phase waveforms, also present significant challenges to the intended receiver, which must synchronize correlator processing to match the code every time it changes. High-order phase shift keying (PSK) spread modulations do, however, provide an overall whiter spectral response than legacy direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signals. Further, the unique ability to color the output signal spectrum offers new advantages to optimize transmission in a non-white frequency channel and to mitigate observed interference. In high data rate applications, the opportunity to inject a time-aligned co-channel underlay-based watermark for authentication at the receiver is an effective method to enhance physical layer (PHY) security for virtually any primary network waveform. This thesis presents a series of options to enhance the implementation of arbitrary-phase chaotic sequence-based spread spectrum waveforms, including techniques to significantly reduce fallthrough correlator hardware resources in low-power sensing devices for only minor performance loss, capabilities for programming chosen frequency domain spectra into the resulting spread spectrum signal, and design considerations for underlay watermark-based PHY-layer firewalls. A number of hardware validated prototypes were built on an Intel Arria 10 SoC FPGA to provide measurable results, achieving substantial computational resource gains and implementation flexibility.
Master of Science
This thesis presents a series of options for enhancing the implementation of arbitrary-phase spread spectrum waveforms, a highly-secure class of wireless technologies, in order to reduce design complexity with minimal loss, provide methods for real-time performance adaptations, and extend the traditional application space for increased security of communications in other networks. A number of enhanced hardware prototypes were implemented to provide measurable results, achieving substantial computational resource gains and design flexibility. Given the computational resources and power constraints of devices in the Internet of Things (IoT), the signal detection loss of 2.10 dB for reducing the hardware logic utilization of the brute force fallthrough correlator by more than 76% (and eliminating the need to dedicate computationally-expensive embedded multipliers) is a very reasonable trade. While the waveform is fundamentally designed for increased security, adapting to widespread and/or commercial use may allow some sacrifice of the signal’s ability to avoid interception/detection to improve performance in undesirable operating conditions. In a similar, yet reversed, case, injecting a watermarking signature at the physical layer (PHY) of less-secure wireless technologies for receiver-side authentication also proves to be beneficial.

Streszczenie:
Spread spectrum techniques have a number of different applications, including range finding, synchronisation, anti-jamming systems and multiple access communication systems. In each of these applications the properties of the resulting systems depend heavily on the family of spreading sequences employed. As such, the design of spreading sequences is an important area of research. Two areas of spreading sequence design are of particular interest in this work, combination techniques and Interference Free Window (IFW) sequences. Combination techniques allow a new sequence family to be constructed by combining two or more existing families. Such an approach allows some of the desirable properties of the components to be maintained, whilst mitigating the components' disadvantages. In addition, it can facilitate the construction of large families at a greatly reduced computational cost. Combination families are considered through the construction of two new classes of sequences, modified Unified Complex Hadamard Transform (UCHT) sequences, and combination Oppermann sequences, respectively based on UCHT sequences and periodic Oppermann sequences. Numerical optimisation techniques are employed to demonstrate the favourable performance of sequences from these classes compared to conventional families. Second, IFW sequences are considered. In systems where approximate, but not perfect, synchronisation between different users can be maintained, IFW sequences can be employed to greatly reduce both interference between users and interference resulting from multipath spread of each user's signal. Large Area Synchronous (LAS) sequences are a class of sequences which both result from combination techniques and exhibit an IFW. LAS sequences are produced by combining Large Area (LA) sequences and LS sequences. They have been demonstrated to be applicable to multiple access communication systems, particularly through their use in LAS2000, which was proposed for third generation mobile telephony. Work to date has been restricted to only a very small range of examples of these families. In order to examine a wider range of LAS sequences, the construction and resulting properties of LA and LS families are considered. The conditions an LA family must satisfy are codified here, and algorithms which can be used to construct LA families with given parameters are presented. The construction of LS sequences is considered, and relationship between each of the parameters used in this construction and the properties of the final family is examined. Using this expanded understanding of both these sequence families, a far wider range of LAS families, potentially applicable to a wider range of applications, can be considered. Initially, the merits of proposed sequences are considered primarily through their correlation properties. Both maximum and mean squared correlation values are considered, depending on the context. In order to demonstrate their practical applicability, combination Oppermann, modified UCHT and LAS sequences are employed in a simulated communications system, and the resulting bit error rates are examined.

Streszczenie:

This thesis presents two applications of spread spectrum technology to very small aperture terminal (VSAT) satellite communication networks. It describes two spread spectrum multiple access systems which use a form of noncoherent M-ary FSK (MFSK) as the primary modulation and analyzes their throughput. The analysis considers such factors as satellite power constraints and adjacent satellite interference. It considers the effect of onâ board processing on the multiple access efficiency and investigates the feasibility of overlaying low data rate spread spectrum signals on existing satellite traffic as a form of frequency reuse.

Streszczenie:

Spread spectrum techniques offer an alternate solution to the urgency for distributed optical fiber sensors. These techniques are based on the properties of pseudorandom sequences that have triangular autocorrelation functions with peaks only at regions of no delay. This affords an opportunity to give the desired signal a power advantage over many types of interference and noise. A study in employing spread spectrum techniques for multiplexing optical fiber sensors is presented. A mathematical analysis of the system is conducted with due consideration given to performance issues. Simulations in software are conducted to characterize system performance. Hardware developed for this project operates at over 1 Mbps and is capable of simultaneously monitoring four sensors. Real time experiments conducted on these multiplexed sensors affirm the technical feasibility of the system. Configurations for viable applications of the system are also suggested.

Streszczenie:
Code Division Multiple Access Technologies have recently received considerable attention as a means of increasing the capacity of a mobile network. They inherently provide for increased system performance together with some resistance to the effects of the mobile channel. While direct sequence spread spectrum systems have been extensively investigated the alternative fast frequency hopped systems have largely been ignored. This thesis considers fast frequency hopped spread spectrum technology as an access method for providing a mobile communication network. Such systems have been previously used by the military to provide reliable communication between a number of parties, in a hostile interference limited channel. The multiple-access mobile communication channel has many similarities to the channel encountered in the military applications. This thesis examines the effect of the interference encountered in the mobile multiple-access communication channel on the transmitted signal. Suitable receiver structures for the channel are then derived which provide for efficient communication in the interference limited channel. These receivers operate to minimise the effect of the interference on the received signal. The multiple-access interference encountered in the channel limits the performance of conventional receivers designed to detect a single user's transmitted signal. This thesis derives a model for the effect of the multiple-access interference on these receivers, A model is provided for the effects of the time-varying frequency-selective multi-path fading encountered by the proposed system in the channel. The design of appropriate receivers for the mobile channel is then considered. Receivers are developed which minimise the effect of interference on the received signal. A prediction process is employed to minimise the effects of the multi-path fading on the received signals. An optimum multi-user receiver is developed. To minimise the effect of the multiple-access interference the optimum receiver simultaneously detects each of the signals present in the channel. The complexity of this receiver limits its application. The derivation is then extended to obtain a less complex sub-optimum receiver based on the optimal structure. This receiver employs an averaging process to approximate the effect of the multiple-access interference on the desired user's signal. A prediction process is again employed to minimise the effect of the multi-path fading channel on the received signals. The effect of the multi-path channel on the interfering users' signals is included in the averaging process. The performance of the receivers is evaluated through simulation. In the multiple-access, multi-path channel the performance of the sub-optimum receiver is found to approach that of the optimum receiver when there is a low level of multiple-access interference. As this interference increases the performance of the receiver suffers.
