Purpose – The growth of non-materialistic impulses among people around the world has led to the emergence of a special category of tourism that can be termed ‘spiritual tourism’. This article presents an attempt to provide a conceptual model for spiritual tourism drawing from the literature on spirituality, religion, and tourism. Design/ Approach – As this study intends to build a bridge between spirituality and tourism, the authors reviewed various articles and adopted the Spiritual Intelligence Model devised by Hanefar, Sa’ari, and Siraj (2016) to build a conceptual model of spiritual tourism. Methodology – Content analysis was used to arrange more than forty dimensions of spiritual tourism from the chosen articles. These dimensions were coded and mapped against the Spiritual Intelligence Model. Findings – The emergent dimensions of spiritual tourism showed that tourism offers unique opportunities in guiding human being to gain spiritual development through religion and non-religion tourism activities/experiences. Originality of the research – The authors developed a Conceptual Model of Spiritual Tourism with seven themes: Meaning/Purpose of life, Consciousness, Transcendence, Spiritual resources, Self-determination, Reflection – soul purification, and Spiritual coping (with obstacles). This model intends to serve as a systematic pathway to authors and other researchers for future research related to spiritual tourism.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the notion and function of silent landscape in a touristic experience by presenting the findings of a study on silent retreats in a Buddhist meditation retreat center in Northern India. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a sensory ethnography approach applied through interviews and participant observation methods conducted during and after nine retreats in a meditation center. Findings This study suggests that silent landscapes are not only backdrops of touristic experiences but can be considered as inter-subjective performative and resourceful milieu of engagement that intertwine intimate embodied experiences with broader social and cultural values. Originality/value Despite landscapes having been thoroughly investigated in tourist studies, this paper underlines the pertinence of mobilizing the lens of other forms of presences such as affects, embodiment, sensoriality and sonority to understand the inter-relation between tourists-selves and the surrounding world encountered during their travels.

Purposeful travel is apparent in new modes of tourism and particularly in volunteer holidays where tourists are searching for meaningful experiences that provide a sense of physical, emotional or spiritual fulfilment. Based on a qualitative study using participant observation, this article adopted the concept of eudemonia to explore the experiences of participants on an elephant conservation expedition to Bardia National Park, Nepal. Volunteer travel is used to connect with and understand the wider world. Rather than an escape, these journeys allowed participants to experience first-hand the hardships and realities of people in other countries; creating greater perspective and making them ‘better people’ on their return. Feeling virtuous can only be mobilised, however, if participants felt themselves to be useful rather than a passive or ill-equipped bystander. Findings also revealed how the return home is not always easy; that the process of re-entry can be isolating.

PurposeThis study aims to explore the hospitality and religious experience of Israeli travelers visiting the globally prevalent Jewish Orthodox Chabad Houses that provide religious, spiritual, educational and hospitality havens in their locales, regardless of the degree of observance.Design/methodology/approachUsing Schmitt’s (1999b) experiential consumption dimensions of Sense, Feel, Think, Relate and Act, this study measured the various visitors’ experiences, satisfaction and loyalty using a sample of 488 Israeli travelers obtained from online social media sites, popular with Israeli travelers.FindingsThe findings reveal that Israeli visits to Chabad Houses were primarily characterized by Act, Feel and Relate experiences like meeting fellow Israeli travelers, a sense of togetherness and a feeling of belonging. In predicting satisfaction and loyalty, the visitors’ religious experience did not play a major role, but rather the actual hospitality extended by their religious hosts, like a home-like feeling, comfort, tasty food and a sense of togetherness did.Research limitations/implicationsCollecting data from an online sample might yield results that would not be applicable to the typical Chabad House visitor. Due to the Chabad Houses’ global presence, their visitors’ experiences may vary from one house to another and the findings may not represent an accurate picture of the typical Chabad House visit.Practical implicationsTo continue its hospitality brand, the Chabad movement’s decision-makers should continue focusing on innovative visitor experiences and balance the religious and secular components of their hospitality, as well as consider carefully how to direct their marketing and operational budgets.Originality/valueAdding to the body of literature on travelers’ experience at religious sites, this research is a pioneering attempt to study and explore visitors’ religious and hospitality experiences while visiting small non-conspicuous religious centers that extend their global hospitality brand to travelers.

The aim of this article is to examine the legitimacy of claims that athletes in extreme sports may encounter the mystical and sublime, when examined though a Christian theological lens. Drawing on the works of theologians and religious studies scholars – in particular, that of Richard Zaehner (1961) – and social scientists who have written on the topic of the mystical and sublime in sporting experience, the two major themes explored are first, the differences and similarities between positive psychological states commonly reported in extreme sport, for example the ‘flow’ experience, and theistic mystical experiences articulated in the bible and in Christian theology, and, secondly, the possibility of experiencing the sublime through the nature–person interaction in wilderness settings. As to whether extreme sport experience provides access to the mystical realms of the Holy that Rudolph Otto, St Paul, Jonathan Edwards and St John of the Cross refer to, our answer is an emphatic no. That said, we wish clearly to articulate our endorsement of sports such as mountaineering, surfing and snowboarding. Within a balanced theology of leisure, they can be seen as forms of deep play, an avenue to well-being and growth, even spiritual expression in an aesthetic, creative sense that provides opportunities for meaningful, therapeutic and exhilarating wilderness experience. It is hoped that for those readers wishing to delve further into this challenging and complicated field of study, our argument will provide a ‘position statement’ that will provoke further scholarship and empirical research.

Sporting Recommendations for Spiritual Encounters: Delivering Sport Psychology inside the English Premier LeagueSport psychologists rarely discuss religious belief or spirituality in their work. Where they do, this is most usually in relation to flow and positive experiential states linked to optimal performance. This article argues that other spiritual dimensions, such as courage, sacrifice and suffering can also be encountered in sport, especially at elite and professional levels. By drawing on broader and more holistic approaches to identity in sport it becomes possible to recognise that for some athletes, religious faith and other sources of spirituality are a major source of meaning in their lives. Applied experiences of the author delivering sport psychology counselling inside several English Premier League teams over 9 seasons is used to highlight how spirituality can be encountered in work with elite professional footballers. Existential phenomenological psychology and philosophical personalism are offered as ways in which sport psychology might be able to find a suitable theoretical framework that can accommodate spiritual ideas and renew focus on the person of the athlete.

The paper discusses the need for an interdisciplinary approach in the study and understanding of society as a whole. An interdisciplinary approach through the study of sociology and social work is a necessity for both scientific approaches in the 21st century. In the first part of the paper, we talk about society and man, as well as the subject of study of sociology and social work. We emphasize that both scientific approaches, sociology, and social work, are relatively young in the context of their establishment. The basic conceptual determinants of sociology and social work are given, as well as the places of meeting and perspectives for both scientific approaches. The first part of the paper also talks about the Chicago School as a meeting place for sociology and social work, and about the causes and consequences of divergence, between sociology and social work, within the Chicago School. In the second part of the paper, we talk about the challenges in the demarcation of sociology and social work, where we emphasize the problem of partialization of scientific fields and processes present in the so-called „identification confusion“ and „jurisdiction“ of scientific fields. The content on the dialectical understanding of sociology and social work is thematic, with special reference to the branches of sociological theory – social spheres, spiritual life, and management. We emphasize that there is an inseparability in understanding between social work and sociology, especially in areas such as marriage and family, gender, age, education, deviant behavior, leisure, socialization, personality, social groups, lifestyle and health, youth, regulatory mechanisms, etc. We conclude our paper with special reference to the relationship between sociology and social work from the perspective of Bosnian society.

Effective interventions for the management of schizophrenia symptoms have been identified in the literature and have implication for recreation therapy. To prevent enduring negative symptoms that impact cognition, a high level of engagement in daily activity is recommended. Therapeutic interventions that show promise in reducing negative symptoms include participation in art, craft, music, and physical activity. To reduce high rates of distress and anxiety symptoms that exacerbate psychotic symptoms, animal assisted therapy, sensory experiences, and spiritual engagement were found to be effective. Early therapeutic intervention to rediscover a skill, talent, or hobby that establishes a sense of self and social identity may assist with reducing positive symptoms. Self-managed coping strategies such as distracting techniques may reduce auditory hallucinations. As positive symptoms reduce, a reduction of comorbid depressive symptoms may also occur. With reduction of negative and positive symptoms, as well as comorbid distress, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, individuals have an increased opportunity to attain their social and leisure goals.

Purpose Tourism and travel experiences are a major contributor to expanding global awareness and consciousness, which is necessary to achieve sustainable development in an integrated and rapidly shrinking world. Design/methodology/approach Consciousness is a major area of theoretical speculation and debate in neuroscience, philosophy, psychology, biology, quantum physics and spirituality disciplines. These fields offer insights into how tourism contributes to an evolving global consciousness. Findings Global consciousness is needed to give a context and vision for addressing the pressing needs of the world today. It is a platform to integrate sustainability at the individual level, and it justifies the human desire to travel as a consciousness expanding experience. In this way, tourism can serve as a positive force for creating a truly sustainable future world. Practical implications Global consciousness could be adopted as an 18th UN Sustainable Development Goal to give a holistic, spiritual and personal vision to sustainable development, which is currently lacking. Travel and tourism would be a major participant in achieving this goal. Originality/value Global consciousness is a non-dualist visionary goal for humankind, and for travel and tourism, which could move both toward more sustainable outcomes than have the reductionist sustainable development practices of the past.

Introduction. The Kalmyks are a Mongolic Buddhist people that arrived in the Volga region in the 17th century. The specific ethnic features of Buddhism professed by the Kalmyks took shape over centuries of Russian suzerainty and were determined by various historical factors, including prolonged remoteness from Buddhist centers, the total eradication of Buddhist monasteries and centuries-long ban on spiritual guidance experienced in the 20th century, and the official Buddhist restoration by the early 21st century. Goals. The work aims at identifying and comparing traditional and contemporary Buddhist thangka patterns as elements to mirror particular features of Kalmyk iconography, as essential objects of religious cult and cultural heritage at large. Results. The paper shows that in the pre-20th century period Kalmyks used different techniques for producing thangkas — painting, embroidery, and applique ones. In the late 18th century onwards, imports of religious attributes from Tibet and Mongolia were restricted, and the role of art workshops affiliated to local Buddhist temples increased. That resulted in further development of thangka painting schools and the shaping of somewhat ethnic style in depicting Buddhist deities characterized by certain differences from canonical images. The old thangkas from private and public collections have served a basis for the restoration of ethnic painting traditions integral to Kalmykia’s Buddhism proper. The contemporary practices of producing divine images are closely related to stages in the regional development of Buddhism from the late 20th century to the present, lay Buddhist experiences, women’s leisure-time activities, and ethnic entrepreneurship. The study concludes contemporary Kalmyk needlewomen are guided by traditional rules of religious craftsmanship.

The increasing popularity of walking pilgrimage has created new forms of interaction and exchange between pilgrims and residents along pilgrimage routes. As a result, religious hospitality along these pilgrimage routes is also under transformation. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted along the Koyasan Choishi-michi pilgrimage route in Wakayama, Japan, this article examines how the meanings and experiences of osettai (‘religious hospitality’) change over time and space. Focusing specifically on the role tourism plays in the current transformation of religious hospitality, the article begins with a historical analysis of osettai and its meanings in pre-modern Japan. Next, we examine how osettai was interrupted due to the decline in walking pilgrims, but also sustained through the maintenance of indirectly related religious practices. The discussion then outlines the transforming meanings of osettai from a practice of giving offerings in return for spiritual reward, to a commodified economic service and finally to a form of cultural exchange. We conclude that placing religious faith as a central theme of analyses, not tourism, can offer new insights and deepen our understandings of how religious hospitality is both transformed and maintained through tourism.

Since the 1980s, discourse on religious piety has taken many different forms, from mosque lessons by lay preachers—such as `Amr Khalid—to religious TV programmes and leisure activities. Within this widespread religious culture and cultivation of forms of visible piety, wearing the veil became an almost uncontested norm for women. As Saba Mahmood demonstrated, the veil became a crucial way to express and cultivate a ‘pious self’. Yet especially since the 2011 revolution and its aftermath, many young Egyptians started to question political, religious and patriarchal authorities. Amongst others, this took on open or hidden forms of non-believing, as well as a search for new forms of spirituality. Based on fieldwork and interviews, this contribution looks into the motives and experiences of women who decided to cast off the veil. In view of the hegemonic piety discourse, this is a huge issue, which is met by fierce reactions and accusations of immorality and non-belief. Whereas for some women this decision is an expression of religious doubt or a turn to a non-religious worldview, for others it is a way to contest the current piety discourse in a search for a more personal and spiritual connection with God. While the relationship with religion among my interlocutors might differ, they share a common attempt to uncover their ‘authentic selves’. By unveiling, they express their wish to define their own space and ideas regarding religion, gender and their bodies.

Abstract Sport activity of achievement-oriented (professional, Olympic, spectacular character) is first of all exposition of rivalry and striving for variously understood sports success (resulting from measurable or discretionary criteria). It refers to winning a competition or taking another expected place as well as to other forms of satisfaction, such as financial gratification or social (political, ethnic, professional) recognition. Spirituality is here neither an aim, nor an expected value - it constitutes rather an additional or redundant quality. A competitor focuses his/her attention first of all on the main aim assumed in planned or current rivalry. Emotional sensations which are experienced by athletes before, during or after competitions testify to mental and emotional stress which accompanies sports combat. It is also difficult to associate spirituality or spiritualism with sport for all - like, for example, that of health-oriented character - sport of the disabled, physical education, sport of playful character or physical recreation. That difficulty results from the fact that neither spiritualism, nor spirituality inspires for physical activity in the abovementioned fields; neither spiritualism, nor spirituality is the outcome of activity in the realm of sport for all. Exceptions are constituted by ancient Olympic Games as well as by some experiences connected with recreational forms of tourism mediated through achievement-oriented sport (also by pre-Columbian Native American societies and Maoris aboriginal population of New Zealand). For example Hellenic Olympic Games were a highly spiritualized form of sports rivalry - including also rivalry in the field of art, and especially in the field of theatre. They were one of numerous forms of religious cult - of worshipping chosen gods from the Olympic pantheon. On the other hand, during mountain hiking and mountain climbing there can appear manifestations of deepened spirituality characteristic for the object of spiritualization of non-religious, quasi-religious or strictly religious qualities. I would like to explain - at the end of this short abstract - that spiritualism (which should not be confused with spiritism) is - generally speaking - first of all a philosophical term assuming, in ontological and axiological sense, that spiritual reality, self-knowledge, consciousness or mental experiences are components of the human being - components of a higher order having priority over matter. They constitute, in the anthropological context, beings of a higher order than the body. Spiritualism according to its popular interpretation means spirituality. Qualities which are ascribed to that notion in particular societies can be determined on the basis of empirically oriented sociological research. They make it possible to determine various ways of interpreting and understanding that notion as well as views or attitudes connected with it.

The article deals with the modern socio-cultural situation associated with the educational process in higher educational institutions. The most important goal is the formation of a citizen's personality, focused on Russian traditional spiritual and moral values. The concept of the development of forms and methods of extracurricular and educational work involves the creation of a projective model of the personality of a graduate with a higher education, the implementation of which, as the ultimate goal, should be guided by the entire educational process of the institute. Patriotism as a value largely determines the ideas contained in the President's annual messages to the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation. The programs proposed by the President are aimed at harmonizing modern Russian society, focusing primarily on young people. The main task of the educational process is to carry out systematic and purposeful work on the formation of a Russian civic identity in student youth, a feeling of love for the Fatherland, responsibility for its condition and development, an active civic position, and readiness to fulfill civic duty. As priority values in the educational activities of the institute, the student acts as a person in his originality and uniqueness, his world in the unity of external manifestations and internal experiences, his rights and vital interests. Technological methods of organizing art and journalistic programs are proposed for consideration and practical implementation. The paper presents the specifics of the organization of an artistic and publicistic program in the context of modern innovative creative activity. The problem of civil-patriotic education of young people is highlighted as one of the most important problems of state youth policy. The art and journalistic program is presented as a bright spectacular form of cultural and leisure activities.

From mid twentieth century we have assisted to a widening in ever-growing tourist possibilities; new ways of travelling have appeared or have diversified their offers (including historical, cultural, environmental, ethnic, etc.) widening thus their action field. We would like to pay attention to a new tourist trend, referred to those who travel around the nets New Age, searching new sacred experiences and spiritual living. We have approached this new process of re-enchantment of the world from the alternative, holistic therapy centers, and all of this kind, which are up to a certain level the links that join this new holistic, transversal and personal spirituality that goes around the places that connect indigenous cultures with global nets, which is creating new coordinates that can be understood as religious.

The philosophy of education of the first Jesuits—as delineated in the Ratio studiorum (1599) and embodied in the colleges’ practices—has become one of the preferred topics among historians of sixteenth-century education and philosophy. This paper seeks to present a heretofore rather neglected aspect of Jesuit education theory: the treatment of the body in the network of colleges during the first fifty years of the Society of Jesus. Among the key features of this treatment one finds leisure and rest, which Jesuits conceived as a means of measuring and punctuating the school timetable. While most medieval colleges did not usually leave much free time to their students, the Jesuits viewed leisure and rest as crucial for fostering spiritual and intellectual activities. Leisure and rest, however, ought not be understood as a cessation of action. This paper shows that the educational practices addressed to the body in the Jesuit colleges (such as the alternation of exercise and rest, the alternation of waking and sleep, the relationship between hygiene and the care of the body, and physical education) were deeply rooted in the Ignatian culture of the Spiritual Exercises. This experience stands out as one of most ingenious attempts to transform religious mystical practices from the medieval tradition in a manner that would make them resonate with the early modern way of life.

Leisure is an important way for residents to achieve well-being. As urbanization continues to accelerate and residents’ spiritual and cultural needs gradually increase, urban park leisure is becoming increasingly prominent in daily recreation, and recreational activities that meet residents’ short-term and frequent needs for leisure are becoming preferred. In this article, based on structural equation models, four representative urban parks in Beijing were selected as study areas to explore the relationships among three variables: leisure involvement, flow experience, and place attachment. The results showed that (1) leisure involvement had a significant positive effect on flow experience, (2) flow experience had a significant positive effect on place attachment, and (3) leisure involvement had both a significant direct effect on place attachment and an indirect effect mediated by flow experience. In addition, according to the empirical analysis of the influence of leisure behavior characteristics on leisure benefits, it was found that 1–3 h of leisure time in the park had the best leisure benefits. Therefore, a higher level of leisure involvement and a stronger flow experience can help to enhance residents’ place attachment; foster self-expression, identity, and self-actualization; and boost the benefits of leisure, which will eventually improve personal well-being and quality of life, construct and strengthen a sense of urban community, and fulfill people’s aspirations for a better life.

In the modern world, leisure is one of the most important components of a person’s time budget, including military personnel. Many scientific papers have been devoted to its study. The article deals with the concept of leisure category and its meaning. For military personnel of the national guard of the Russian Federation, the goal of leisure is not only to restore spiritual and physical strength, but also to improve their education, Outlook, and physical development. Leisure in the life of military personnel plays an important role, as it is aimed at restoring and developing spiritual and physical strength, family cohesion, personal self-improvement, expanding horizons, as well as the transfer of life experience and moral values. On the basis of a sociological study conducted by the questionnaire method, the non-organizational leisure preferences of various groups of military personnel are analyzed. Non-organizational leisure is divided into home and non-home leisure. When conducting out-of-home leisure activities, the respondents of the first group give the greatest preference to entertainment forms of leisure (visiting cinemas, recreation parks, cafes, sports events), the respondents of the second group, in addition to entertainment forms of leisure, prefer spiritual and moral (visiting theaters, museums, religious institutions). When considering home forms of leisure, it was found that the leisure practices of the respondents of the first and second groups coincide. Despite the fact that the representatives of the first group one of the main leisure activities is self-education, they, unfortunately, exclude such leisure activities as visiting theaters, museums and organizing family performances. In our opinion, these types of leisure contribute to the moral and spiritual development of the individual and increase his self-education. Despite the fact that the results of the study showed that more than 80% of the surveyed military personnel are satisfied with their leisure time and carry out its planning, a number of negative factors have been identified that affect the implementation of leisure practices in full. If the main negative factors for the respondents of the second group are physiological, i.e. fatigue after work, then the respondents of the first group note equally the material (lack of money) and temporary (lack of time) factors, as well as the physiological factor (fatigue after work). The material factor noted by military personnel of the first group for the reason that their pay does not match the standard of living, as money reform the military, conducted in 2012, did not give the expected results in improving the material well-being of privates and sergeants.

Abstract In their longitudinal study of stress and health among adults, McGonigal and colleagues (2013; 2016) suggested that how person perceives stress is a key factor affecting their actual physiological health. This is related to the concept of eustress (i.e., positive response to a given stressor) which has received very little attention in the literature. Besides, older adults with chronic conditions deal with symptoms that are difficult to manage and can contribute to chronic stress, which can then affect their health status and quality of life. Thus, helping older adults to shift their perceptions and interpretations of stressors from distress to eustress, rather than trying to avoid stress seems to be a reasonable approach to help them experience healthy aging. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of eustress among older adults with chronic conditions in the context of leisure. Sixteen participants were recruited from three settings in a Midwestern city: a retirement community, an assisted living center, and a community senior program. Findings showed that participants’ health conditions were one of their greatest stressors, however, they modified their leisure engagement based on their conditions to enable their engagement in valued leisure activities. In the context of leisure, five themes emerged as facilitators that helped older adults to experience eustress: leisure satisfaction, sense of control, high levels of perseverance, positive attitude, and spiritual belief. Direct quotes and further discussion on how the themes are represented in the stress, leisure, and gerontology literature will be presented.

Contemporary tourism is considered by many to embrace a spiritual dimension. That is, in increasingly secular modern societies, many forms of tourism represent a sacred journey that has the potential to fulfil the contemporary tourist’s spiritual needs. However, relatively few attempts have been made to explore this phenomenon, in particular, in the context of one of the most popular tourism settings, namely the seaside. This article addresses this gap in the literature. Drawing on research in Morecambe, a traditional seaside resort in the north-west of England, it seeks to identify the extent to which the seaside environment, in general, and the sea in particular, endow the touristic experience of the resort with emotional or spiritual significance. A number of clear themes emerge from the research that point to a spiritual dimension of the seaside experience, including a sense of connection, awesomeness, timelessness and nothingness. Nevertheless, further research in other coastal settings is required to substantiate these findings.

The article examines the activities of the Pedagogical Faculty of the Orthodox St. Tikhon's University for the Humanities in the field of leisure pedagogy. The fea-tures of this activity in the context of spiritual and moral education of children are analyzed and the following conclusions are drawn: Various types of practices are an important form of the leisure activity of a future Orthodox teacher in the context of spiritual and moral education of children. Practice programs should be carefully prepared and include both traditional and innovative creative pedagogical approaches. The latter include the creation of an innovative program "The soul must work", the implementation of which was carried out in the conditions of the children's sanatorium complex "Pearl of Russia" in Anapa, which is the base of the summer practice of the pedagogical faculty. The main content of the program was a system of knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs aimed at the formation of spirituality, morality in the organization of children's free time. The content of the program was implemented through the missionary and pedagogical system of the children's sanatorium complex "Gemchujyna Rossii" created on the basis of the pedagogical faculty, which included the following functions: Pastoral care, Missionary activity, Scientific and pedagogical activity. This system operated on the basis of a set of educational principles, methods and means of secular and Orthodox-oriented pedagogy based on the factor of a holistic approach in the formation of a child's personality, taking into account religious (spiritual and moral), ethical and patriotic values. One of the main conditions for the successful implementation of the functions of the missionary-pedagogical system was the "mutual action" of all the above-mentioned methods, forms and means, with the obligatory observance of the creative informal approach, the principles of naturalness, cooperation, voluntari-ness, variability and complementarity. The missionary and pedagogical system of the children's sanatorium complex "Pearl of Russia" has been functioning effectively for more than ten years, which determines the right direction of the activity of the pedagogical Faculty of the Or-thodox St. Tikhon's University for the Humanities in the field of leisure pedagogy.

Aim/Purpose: Vision 2030 (Saudi Arabia’s national development plan) expects women (50% of all university students) to contribute to a viable economy and ambitious nation, meaning data about their quality of academic life (QAL) during their university experience are timely and significant. They are key players in the nation’s future. Background: This inaugural, exploratory study addresses this under-researched topic by exploring the spiritual, cognitive, physical, social, and psychological dimensions of Saudi female graduate students’ QAL. Methodology: Data comprised the lead author’s reflections and reflexion and interviews with 17 Saudi female graduate students conveniently sampled from Imam Abdul Rahman bin Faisal University (IAU) (Eastern Province) in January 2020. A new Academic Quality of Life Schema was especially designed for this study and future research. Contribution: A Middle Eastern country’s perspective is shared about female graduate students’ QAL from a holistic perspective (spiritual, mind, and body) and through the lens of a new QAL Schema (cognitive, social, and psychological). Findings: Spirituality was the highest rated holistic QAL dimension (76.6%) followed with body (67.4%) and mind (intellect) (58.8%). Despite a generally positive QAL evaluation (67.6%), participants (a) lamented their inability to sustain previous levels of religious devotion and practice, (b) reported health issues with deep emotions and surprise, and (c) experienced dissatisfaction with the educational aspect of their QAL. Regarding the QAL Schema, (a) their lack of research savviness hampered their ability to learn and enjoy the graduate experience; (b) psychological anxiety hampered their ability to connect with the Creator and poor time management and heavy academic workload compromised exercise and leisure with all three causing an imbalanced lifestyle; and (c) social peer camaraderie and positive classroom environments were appreciated. Recommendations for Practitioners: Women’s colleges should (a) collect subjective data about female graduate students’ satisfaction with university services, specialization and teaching decisions, and faculty members’ and peer colleagues’ support; (b) provide and promote services related to places and means of recreation, leisure, and alone time; and (c) ensure that guidance and counseling offices develop strategies to reduce stress and anxiety factors hindering QAL. Recommendation for Researchers: Future studies should use larger sample frames and, for comparative purposes, previously validated empirical QAL instruments. Saudi-based QAL studies should include religion. Mixed methods research designs are recommended as is a gendered comparative study for the gender-segregated Saudi higher education context. Impact on Society: Deeper understandings of Saudi female graduate students’ QAL will facilitate (a) tailored institutional and faculty support leading to higher enrolment levels, (b) stronger knowledge bases and more sophisticated research skills for students and (c) improved labor force participation. Future Research: Over 1/3 of participants felt their academic gains were not as strong as anticipated, yet few commented about teaching staff or teaching methods. Future research should expand inquiries into the educational aspect of QAL as well as the underrepresented social aspect of QAL.

The Camino Pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is an institution that has been operative for more than 1200 years. The European summer months see hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, whether they be persons of faith, agnostics or even atheists, walking the different routes to the city of Santiago de Compostela in the north-west of Spain. To be officially recognised as a pilgrim, by the cathedral authorities, a participant must walk at least 100 km or travel 200 km by bicycle or on horseback along the route. Most carry their luggage with them, making them backpackers. They are usually on a tight budget, have flexible itineraries and opt for inexpensive basic accommodation. This explorative case study looks at the reasons why South Africans undertake the Camino. The results show that they represent a much older group as opposed to the typical Camino pilgrim or international backpacker. Unlike many other documented Camino pilgrims, men do not undertake the journey for religious or spiritual reasons; rather they embark on the trip to fulfil their leisure, recreational and adventurous inclinations. Their female counterparts see it as a personal challenge and a cathartic experience after having lived through a traumatic event. Lastly, some may use it as an opportunity to immerse themselves in their ancestral European heritage.

The article examines the social and pedagogical foundations of the proactive and integrative environmental education and upbringing. It is shown that traditional secondary and higher education not only underwent a systemic crisis, but also largely lost the components of civic, moral, ethical, ecological and spiritual education. In this regard, at the end of the last century, there was a proposal from the western pedagogical school to create an education system for sustainable development. This education was based on the activation of experiential (experience and practice-oriented practiceoriented), in other words - empirical education. At the same time, education cannot be effective using mainly the principles of empirical pedagogy. Education must be balanced. It must have both deep didactic and empirical approaches. Taking into account the balanced traditions of the russian school and the new proposals of the western school, the author of the article tried to create and test their own modified model of upbringing and education. This model, to a greater extent, was created for the system of additional education, in particular, for children's camps. Using the pedagogical approaches of this model in the camp, it is possible to fill those gaps in knowledge and upbringing that in modern conditions cannot be given at school. The work describes the history of the formation of this pedagogical direction in Russia. The definition of active environmental education is given. A comparison is made with the empirical education and teaching of the western pedagogical model. Demonstrated many years of experience in the programs of the proactive and integrative environmental education and upbringing "Leisure and Learning with Pleasure" on the basis of various camps. Elements of programs are shown. An example of a lesson in education of civic responsibility and subjectivity of a teenager is given. Shows the value of knowledge of the language, history of the country and understanding of the importance of education at different stages of development of Russia.

Reiki is an example of a spiritually based healing context, which offers an entry into the magical thinking through the ritual initiation. There are several practices like Reiki in the field of new spirituality. Their backgrounds are situated in a variety of religious traditions, although many religious ideas in the field are based on assimilation of ideas and practices familiar in Eastern religious traditions. Why is Reiki so particularly famous in the field? It would seem that Reiki is very flexible and easily integrated to other practices. One factor which explains the popularity of Reiki has to do with healing. Healing, as well as illness and sickness, involving pain and relief from pain, are universal experiences felt by everyone. Complementary and alternative ways of healing are as popular among ordinary folk now as they have been throughout the history of medicine. Even medical nursing staff participate in Reiki courses in their leisure time. One reason for the popularity might also be that Reiki courses are open to everybody. Everybody can learn to heal. After initiation, participants are promised, and believed, to be rewarded for the ability to heal themselves and those near to them with the help of cosmic energy. The focus of this article is the enrichment of magical thinking among Reiki self-healers.The term ‘enrichment’ refers to an observable thickness (or density) of spontaneous reasoning going along lines of magical trains of thought. This includes, for example, assumptions of agency and magical contagion.

The article raises topical issue of the multimedia technologies usage in the philology teacher’s professional activity. It has been determined that under conditions of the Ukrainian society democratization essentially increases the importance of pupils’ spiritual and moral education, therefore the requirements to the quality of philological subjects teaching, which in this way have considerable pedagogical potential, considerably increase. One of the effective ways to solve this problem is to introduce modern multimedia technologies to educational process. It is specified that modern multimedia technology in the educational field is a software and hardware system that by combining various means of audio, TV, visual and virtual communications creates a compound informational and educational environment. It has been found that scientific literature offers different approaches to the multimedia technologies classification. Thus, according to the method of perception the context, visual, audio, audiovisual technologies are distinguished, according to the methodical purpose – demonstration, mentoring, training, controlling, reference, modeling, game, leisure. Each of the technologies mentioned has wide opportunities to increase the efficiency of philological subjects teaching. It has been established that while choosing a specific multimedia technology for a lesson by a philology teacher one should consider features of learning philological subjects by pupils, such as: object and subject of philological sciences is a personality; important result of the philological subjects context acquiring is accumulating the experience of expressing subjective emotional and valuable attitude to different aspects of human being; the process of philological subjects learning cannot be explained as a clear algorithm, because the holistic perception of an object is the reason to its understanding; the mentioned subjects learning by the pupils seriously influences their individual environment and motivates to self-improvement. It has been demonstrated that the scientifically proved multimedia technologies usage preserves the increase of the pupils’ development processes efficiency in reading, writing, listening and building language lexical and grammar skills.

Streszczenie:
The relevance of the research is conditioned by the necessity to arrange countermeasures against extremism on the territory of the educational organization and student dormitories, and by the absence of a scientifically justified model for operation of universities in this direction. Research goal: theoretical justification and elaboration of the programme on counter-extremism activities on the territory of the educational organization and student dormitories. The leading research methods were the analysis and generalization of the pedagogic experience, statistical processing of the quantitative data concerning the problem state in the educational organization, and simulation. The research results contribute to further scientific comprehension of the problem of preventing extremist manifestations among the youth in the present socio-cultural situation and to creation of the required conditions for successful fulfillment of the anti-terrorist and anti-extremist line of the government. The programme for extremism prevention in the student environment was presented, the introduction of which will allow achieving a positive effect in educating a personality that can express the Russian spiritual and moral imperative, has a proactive attitude with regard to opposing asocial phenomena, radicalism, extremism, and terrorism in all forms; the socio-cultural conditions for preventing the extremist attitudes that contribute to pedagogic correction in the process of educational and leisure activities were revealed. Research value: the research showed that applying a complex of preventive measures with due account for the organizational-pedagogic, socio-psychological, professional socio-cultural conditions largely optimizes the activity on introduction of conceptual provisions of the state youth policy, and reduces the level of destructive behaviour in the student environment. The materials of the paper can be useful for the heads of educational structures of different level and other subjects of educational activity, and can be used in the outreach and volunteer activities of the youth non-governmental organizations.

Streszczenie:
In the 1920 s, the politically heterogeneous Ukrainian emigration community in inter-war Czechoslovakia, with its back in World War I and losing national liberation competitions, desperately needed both physical and spiritual rest. However, the status of «emigrants» transformed the imagination of the natives about leisure and leisure. The recreational regulator was, on the one hand, the scientific and technical implications of the 'stormy twenties' and, on the other, the urgent need to keep 'one's band', that is, a collective form of rest and leisure. Ukrainian exiles visited various theatrical performances, book exhibitions, music concerts, sections and circles, and enjoyed excursions. Slowly, with some nuances, cinema was also part of the Ukrainian emigration leisure. It should be noted that the Ukrainian emigration in the inter-war Czechoslovakia, because of the 1920 s «quick return concept» and the priority, first of all, of its own political projects, did not leave any jobs or references to film vacations. The Great Depression of the 1930 s and the Losses dismissed the issue of leisure in general and film recreation in particular, making it difficult to physically work to survive. Contemporary scientific intelligence on the impact and role of cinema in the life of the Ukrainian emigration community in the interwar CSR is absent because of the fact that despite the status of Prague as a powerful political, cultural and scientific emigration center, it has not become a leading European cinema center, yielding here Berlin. Only those edited by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor IB Matyash, the book «Diplomatic History of Ukraine by Yevgeny Slabchenko (Eugene Deslav)», relevant to the subject of our intelligence, and the article by Roman Roslyak «Ukrainfilm».Based on the above, the purpose of the publication is to argue that, despite some efforts by the Ukrainian emigration community in the interwar CSR, a powerful European film center in Prague, unlike Paris, Vienna, Berlin and New York, never. The Ukrainian emigration community in the Czechoslovak Republic numbered about 20-22 thousand people. In its social composition, it was mainly peasant workers, the layer of her intelligentsia was small. Thus, most Ukrainian immigrants either used the moment to seek education in order to further have a higher social status or to work hard without being able to study. First of all, the Ukrainians, as a national community in exile with a lack of sufficient financial base, even in the «scientifically technical twenties» and «economically unstable thirties», were forced to stand in conservative positions on leisure issues. The first «moving pictures» appeared on the territory of the Czech Republic in 1896 in Prague and Karlovy Vary, thanks to the director and cameraman Jan Krzyzyniecki, who, since the second half of the 1890s, made several short documentary films. And a year later, one of the private American film companies came to the Czech Republic to start filming a black and white silent film in Bohemia. Whereas the first permanent cinema on Czech lands was started by the illusionist Victor Ponrepo (1858–1926) in 1907 in Prague. The Czechoslovakian film industry gained considerable momentum during the interwar period. Since 1921 professional film studios have started. And by 1932, the championship was kept by black and white silent films. The soundtrack of films in the Czechoslovakia began in 1930. In addition, in 1930 Czechoslovak authorities imposed a ban on the import of any German-language films. Prohibition of German-language film production leads to the fact that in 1933, the Czech studio «Barrandov Studio», established by the brothers Vaclav and Milos Havel in 1921, is firmly on its feet, and the number of cinemas is counted in 1938. 1824. However, there were attempts to create a quality Ukrainian emigration film product and, accordingly, Ukrainian (emigration) film studios in the Czechoslovak Republic. These attempts were linked to the names of Boris Khoslovsky and Roman Mishkevich. Khoslovsky since 1926 the head of production of advertising departments of the firm «Vira Film». Since 1928 organizer and owner of the «Mercury Film» Studio, specializing in the production of promotional films. Another Ukrainian film studio, «Terra Film», originated in Brno in the early 1930s on the initiative of Roman Mishkevich. This film studio tried to shoot science and plot (situational-natural) films. Until 1939, Myshkevich's firm remained the largest importer of motion pictures from the Czech Republic to Japan, China, India and Central America. Yet, to develop a powerful Ukrainian film industry in the Czechoslovakia proved impossible. There were several reasons for this. First, political (emigrant status) and economic (lack of sustainable financial flows from the Czechoslovakia) were hampered. Secondly, the Ukrainian film industry did not have the support of both Ukrainian and Czech (private) businesses. Thirdly, the low potential of Ukrainian film enthusiasts and the lack of professional education and experience were evident. Fourth, the Ukrainian Prague film production consisted mainly of documentaries, short films, plot films, reports and chronicles.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to consider a broadened suite of paradigmatic lenses to help better understand customer engagement during and beyond COVID-19. During this period of uncertainty and economic downturn, many customers are questioning their ways of living and being, and thus businesses are engaging customers in new and evolving ways. To appreciate this broadened realm of engagement requires researchers and businesses to embrace existential humanism as an alternative, yet complementary, paradigmatic lens.Design/methodology/approachThis is a conceptual paper. The authors consider three distinct paradigmatic lenses on human (inter)action—economic rationalism, institutionalism and existential humanism—and apply these lenses to deepen the underlying theorizing of the customer engagement concept. Further, the authors illustrate how customers engage with businesses in distinct ways, seeking meaning congruent with the challenges faced during COVID-19.FindingsThe authors argue that the common tripartite model of cognitive, emotional and behavioral customer engagement, typically informed by reductionist and unilateral paradigmatic lenses, is insufficient to understand why customers seek to engage with businesses during and after COVID-19.Originality/valueIn providing a broader paradigmatic perspective, the authors make a plea for a stronger consideration and activation of spiritual engagement in marketing. The current COVID-19 environment challenges extant philosophical assumptions of engagement theorizing, which we address by way of existential humanism. The authors contribute through a more differentiated perspective of engagement, accounting for a broader spectrum of human experience. This enables more informed theorizing across levels of abstraction, while emphasizing diverse avenues for future engagement for a time even beyond COVID-19.

Tourism research has flourished over the last decade, providing novel insights and deepening the literature on destination branding and tourism experiences. Consequently, the initial conceptualization of destination brand experience (DBE) as a four-dimension concept may not fully capture the field’s expanded knowledge-base. The present study seeks to extend the conceptualization of DBE into six main dimensions (i.e., relational; spiritual, sensory, cognitive, affective, and behavioral) and provide empirical support for this extended conceptualization from a sample of tourists at Lake Malawi in Africa. The study contributes by providing support to the relevance of “relational” and “spiritual” dimensions as additional components of DBE. It offers insights to destination marketing organizations toward facilitating relational and spiritual dimensions that may be particularly relevant when tourists seek recovery and social experiences as travel and tourism re-emerges from the pandemic.

Dark tourism is an important part of tourism at some destinations; however, little is known about the factors that influence the overall dark tourism experience. This research aims to contribute to this existing knowledge gap by improving our understanding of the nature of the dark tourism experience and its formation process. Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 15 tourists in the war zones of Iran, participants were asked to talk about their memorable experiences and why the experience was special to them. Using a grounded theory approach, a theoretical model of memorable dark tourism experiences (MDTEs) was developed and four key factors influencing dark tourism experiences at a destination were identified: learning from dark experiences, spiritual experiences, involvement in activities and emotional experiences. The findings of this study contribute to ongoing efforts in tourism studies to understand the nature of memorable tourism experiences in general and in the context of dark tourism experiences in particular. The theoretical and practical importance of the research results is discussed and various approaches are proposed for future research.

Purpose This study aims to examine how life events, philosophy and spirituality contribute to the development of gastronomy experiences for competitive advantage. Design/methodology/approach Drawing on a qualitative case study approach, interviews were conducted with the owner/chef, employees and customers of Moksa – a plant-based restaurant in Bali, Indonesia. Findings The integration of life events (change in health, relationship journey and residential relocation), life philosophy (healthy lifestyle, sustainability and cuisine for the soul) and spirituality (religious values and spiritual fulfillment of life purpose) can facilitate the creation and management of an improved gastronomy experience. Research limitations/implications There are key elements of life that can help in the creation of a unique, memorable and holistic gastronomy experience. Restaurant owners and managers should embed these elements in their strategy. Originality/value This research adds to the scant knowledge on life courses and gastronomy experiences in the hospitality sector. It also contributes to enhancing understanding of the psychological factors that lead to better experiences.

Streszczenie:
How individuals live their lives, within the context of personal and collective values, expresses their living culture. Societies may be made up of people with different ethnocultural backgrounds, socio-economic profiles or spiritual orientations, but they share certain common cultural frameworks (e.g., democratic governance, rules of law, conventions of business, principles of equity for all, etc.) of what is increasingly a globalized, pluralized, and urbanized present. Culture is often thought of as either the historical traditions of a group, or else as certain types of activities (e.g., dance, theatre, celebrations, rituals, etc.) and objects (e.g., art, artifacts, clothing, etc.). Meanwhile, cultural organizations are characterized as specialized places of expertise that provide selected kinds of experiences and services to the public – normally available for consumption during leisure time. This article argues that the heart of living culture is to be found not in specialized types of objects, leisure-time experiences, ethnocultural traditions, or cultural organizations but, rather, in its processes of human adaptation in a changing world. The author uses the lens of culture to examine how humanity understands and attempts to manage change within its sphere of influence. How can we best measure the cultural well-being of our societies, our organizations, and ourselves? The overarching notion of global/local sustainability provides the grounding point for considering how best to foster a 'culture of sustainability'.
