Root, Sheryl. "The healing touch : spiritual healing in England, c.1870-1955". Thesis, University of Warwick, 2005. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/1196/.

Streszczenie:
This thesis provides a comprehensive analysis of spiritual healing in England in its various different guises during the late-nineteenth and early- to mid-twentieth centuries. It considers the interplay between the various spiritual healing groups themselves and between their philosophies and practices and orthodox medical theory more generally. The first half examines how spiritual healing was conceptualised by those who practised it - who spiritual healers were, what they believed and how they defined illness and healing. The specific therapeutic techniques used by healers are delineated, and the themes of touch and morality explored in detail. The second half of this thesis then examines how spiritual healing was perceived by the religious and medical establishments, and explores their co-operational discourse. Firstly, the reaction of the orthodox Christian churches to spiritual healing and their fractured and inherently conservative attempts to utilise it as a means of revitalising orthodox Christianity are analysed. The final chapters then chart the chronological relationship between spiritual healing and orthodox medicine during three specific periods, and explore the way in which spiritual healing intersected and impacted upon medical reactions to the new psychology of the twentieth century.

Streszczenie:
A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Arts in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor in Community Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University Of Zululand, South Africa, 2015
The incidence of rape in South Africa is high. A total of 50 481 rape cases were reported in 2010. Rape trauma is exacerbated by the fact that the country has a limited number of professionally trained therapists to attend to survivors. Most survivors end up looking for assistance from their churches, and therefore claim to be healed spiritually. This study was conducted in the Nkangala district of South Africa because of the high incidence of reported rape cases. While it is estimated that one woman is raped in every five minutes in this district, there are only three psychologists employed by the government to attend to a population of 1 020 592. As a result of the scarcity of health care professionals, survivors end up looking for assistance from their churches. South Africa is a country in which spirituality is clearly important. Seventy five percent of the population claim to be Christian and twenty percent claim allegiance to other religions In-depth interviews were conducted with eight female rape survivors between the ages of 18 and 40yrs, who considered themselves to have experienced spiritual healing. Content analysis indicated that spiritual healing approximated psychotherapeutic interventions in the provision of unconditional positive regard, empathy, congregational support and respect. Survivors strongly believed that their healing occurred as a result of prayer, reading Holy Scriptures, church support and spiritual guidance, which gave them strength to forgive perpetrators and move on with their lives.

Pohran, Nadya. "Charismatic Healing: A Phenomenological Study of Spiritual Healing in Ottawa, Canada". Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32612.

Streszczenie:
Spiritual healing is a ubiquitous and fundamental part of Charismatic Christianity; it is indelibly linked to understandings of God, society, and individual identity. And yet, the phenomenon of spiritual healing—particularly its expression within North American, Abrahamic traditions—has been understudied within academia. In this thesis, I take a phenomenological approach in order to better comprehend the meaning-making process behind spiritual healing rituals amongst Charismatic Protestant Christians in Ottawa, Canada. Through a small-scale, local ethnographic study in Ottawa in which I conducted participant observation and several in-depth interviews, I explore Charismatic Christianity through the lens of lived religion. Based on a series of focused case studies, I conclude that the Charismatic cosmological worldview (one in which cosmic-wide restoration is emphasised) correlates with, and contributes to, the Charismatic emphasis on individual healing.

Coats, Heather Lea. "African American Elders' Psycho-Social-Spiritual Healing across Serious Illness". Diss., The University of Arizona, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/578887.

Streszczenie:
Background: Disparities in care for seriously ill African American (AA) elders exist because of gaps in knowledge regarding culturally sensitive physiological, psychological, social, and spiritual needs and preferences. Conceptual Framework: The foundation of culturally sensitive patient-centered PC is formed from social, spiritual, psychological and physical experiences of serious illness. Purpose: Aim 1 was to describe categories and patterns of psych-social-spiritual healing from the perspective of AA elders with serious illness. Aim 2 was to examine the NIH Clinical Center's psych-social-spiritual healing measure as a valid, culturally appropriate measure for this population. Methods: A purposive sample of 28 AA elders with serious illnesses and from the Jackson MS area participated in this study. Aim One used the qualitative method of narrative analysis. Aim Two used cognitive interviewing methodology, including verbal probing and think aloud techniques. Findings: Aim One: Prior experiences, I changed, and Across past, present experiences and future expectations were the three main of the thematic analysis. The thematic categories in prior experiences were: been through it...made me strong, I thought about…others, and went down little hills...got me down. The thematic categories in I changed were: I grew stronger, changed priorities, do things I never would have done, and quit doing. The thematic categories in Across past, present experiences and future expectations were: God did and will take care of me, close-knit relationships, and life is better. The most prevalent theme of God did and will take care of me was divided into subthemes of: God did, God will and developing faith. Aim Two: Of the fifty-three items on the Psychological-Social-Spiritual Healing instrument, thirty-seven items were retained, eight items revised, and eight items deleted. Conclusions: Aim one: The narratives were stories of remarkable strength. This strength was grounded in the participants' "faith" in God that helped the aging seriously ill AA elder "overcome things." Aim Two: Linguistic validity was enhanced with expert input from the seriously ill AA elders. Pragmatic validity, using both the research team and participants' input, improved the content validity. These findings provide evidence towards a more valid and culturally sensitive tool.

Sonnex, Charmaine. "Extending the non-contact healing paradigm to explore distant mental interaction effects of Pagan healing spells". Thesis, University of Northampton, 2017. http://nectar.northampton.ac.uk/9733/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Paganism is a burgeoning belief system in the UK, which has received little attention from psychological researchers. Healing is a key aspect of modern Pagan practice, yet it too receives little attention from those investigating distance healing practices. Given the growth of Paganism in recent years these omissions from the literature should be addressed by researchers. This thesis investigates the healing practices of modern Paganism using a mixed methods approach across three phases. The first phase is a meta-analysis of existing non-contact healing research. There has been much research investigating the efficacy of various forms of non-contact healing which has resulted in reviews and meta-analysis which suggest that non-contact practices can have some positive effect upon the recipient’s wellbeing; however they also raise the issue of low study quality in this area. The most recent comprehensive review of this subject area was published in 2000; much more research has been published since then and the legitimacy of some previously published research has since been questioned. Also, such reviews focus on ‘whole’ human participants who might be susceptible to expectancy effects or benefit from the healing intentions of friends, family or their own religious groups. To address these issues an up to date, comprehensive meta-analysis was conducted that included healing studies that involved biological systems other than ‘whole’ humans (e.g., studies of plants or cell cultures) that were less susceptible to placebo-like effects and investigated the impact of study quality. Phase two employed interviews with practising Pagans regarding their spell casting practices. Eight Pagans from a variety of traditions were interviewed using semi structured interviews and the data were analysed using thematic analysis. Six major themes and 16 subthemes were extracted from the data and used to inform the design of phase three. Phase three is a randomised controlled trial of Pagan healing spells. The trial utilised a delayed intervention design. Various aspects of the trial design were informed by phase two interviews, such as the choice of outcome measure, the use of spell request forms, participant pictures and items, and scepticism measures.

The desert fathers offer to use today the same pastoral care that they offered those who came seeking health and healing in 3rd century Egypt. Their method of care had authority because it came out of a lifestyle seeped in Christ’s love. Their spiritual practices of prayer, Scriptural reading and intimate relationship provided a healing environment where the sick were made well and the demons were cast out. It was a context of continual spiritual warfare, one where the monks sought to live their lives in the freedom of Christ’s love.

Barlow, F. V. "Women's experiences of breast cancer and spiritual healing : a unitary appreciative inquiry". Thesis, Bournemouth University, 2011. http://eprints.bournemouth.ac.uk/20519/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the effects and outcomes of Spiritual Healing in the context of women with breast cancer receiving long-term hormonal therapy. Background Spiritual Healing is widely available and used by many but is a neglected area of research. Whilst the exact mechanisms are not understood and healers make no claim to cure, evidence suggested that Spiritual Healing as a holistic complementary therapy could support women whose quality of life is negatively affected by breast cancer and its treatments. After initial surgical, radiological and/or chemical treatments, the majority of women are prescribed hormonal therapy for at least five years, giving rise to immediate and long-term symptoms that compromise their quality of life and force some to take respite from treatment. Spiritual Healing was thought to have the potential to improve quality of life and encourage continued compliance with potentially life-saving orthodox therapy. Method This qualitative study used Unitary Appreciative Inquiry to explore the fullness and richness of patients’ changing life patterns. An observational study of Spiritual Healing took place in a clinical research facility within a district general hospital, and was given by healers with a nationally recognised qualification. Twelve breast cancer patients, who reported at least one onerous treatment side-effect, self-referred to the study and were given ten Spiritual Healing sessions of approximately 40 minutes’ duration each. Data included direct observations noted by healers, patient’s daily logs, researcher’s field diary and one-to-one semi-structured interviews. Findings The effects of breast cancer and its treatments were long-lasting and permeated every aspect of these participants’ lives. The physical effect of cancer and its treatments restricted usual activities, leading to low morale and emotional distress. Patients’ narratives expressed loss and regret and for all patients fear was a constant companion. Observational data illustrated how the experience of Spiritual Healing reduced physical side-effects, including hot flushes, and afforded a sense of serenity and hope. Conclusions This study highlights the potential for Spiritual Healing as a complementary therapy to alleviate many of the distressing effects of breast cancer and its treatments, most notably during long-term hormonal therapy. These findings appear to justify further research to understand the potential value of Spiritual Healing as a complementary therapy to support orthodox medical care.
