Streszczenie:
Persons with hearing loss use visual information from articulation to improve their speech perception. Even persons with normal hearing utilise visual information, especially when the stimulus-to-noise ratio is poor. A dramatic demonstration of the role of vision in speech perception is the audiovisual fusion called the ‘McGurk effect’. When the auditory syllable /pa/ is presented in synchrony with the face articulating the syllable /ka/, the subject usually perceives /ta/ or /ka/. The illusory perception is clearly auditory in nature. We recently studied the audiovisual fusion (acoustical /p/, visual /k/) for Finnish (1) syllables, and (2) words. Only 3% of the subjects perceived the syllables according to the acoustical input, ie in 97% of the subjects the perception was influenced by the visual information. For words the percentage of acoustical identifications was 10%. The results demonstrate a very strong influence of visual information of articulation in face-to-face speech perception. Word meaning and sentence context have a negligible influence on the fusion. We have also recorded neuromagnetic responses of the human cortex when the subjects both heard and saw speech. Some subjects showed a distinct response to a ‘McGurk’ stimulus. The response was rather late, emerging about 200 ms from the onset of the auditory stimulus. We suggest that the perisylvian cortex, close to the source area for the auditory 100 ms response (M100), may be activated by the discordant stimuli. The behavioural and neuromagnetic results suggest a precognitive audiovisual speech integration occurring at a relatively early processing level.

Streszczenie:
My Ph.D examines the role of the prototype in speech perception. Although existing research claims that the speech prototype acts as a perceptual attractor for other stimuli in the same speech-sound category, I argue instead that the prototype actually has two roles in the perceptual system - as both a perceptual attractor (i.e. showing reduced discrimination in the surrounding perceptual space) and a perceptual repellor (i.e. showing enhanced discrimination) and that the choice of role depends entirely on the needs of the listener and the needs of the system that he/she is part of. This claim is substantiated through my work on non-speech prototypes in which I found that although professional musicians treat music prototypes as perceptual repellors, non-musicians treat them as perceptual attractors. Because a professional musician 'needs' to be able to recognise how precisely 'in-tune' a musical sound is, enhanced discrimination is needed around their music prototypes. In contrast, a non-musician typically listens to music only to be entertained and can therefore show reduced discrimination around a music prototype. This is true also for the average individual listening to speech who does not 'need' to register how qualitatively good an incoming speech-sound is as long as it is recognisable. Under normal circumstances, therefore, speech-sound prototypes function as perceptual attractors. I believe that the role of the prototype is determined by the amount of attention paid to it by the listener. This has formed the basis for my "A&R Theory" which states that prototypes (in both speech and non-speech) are organised along a perceptual function continuum bounded by regions of minimal and maximal attention, and that the position of the prototype along the continuum at a given point in time is directly dependent on the amount of attention paid to it. At the point of maximal attention (i.e. the professional musician) the prototype acts as a perceptual repellor. At the point of minimal attention (i.e. the non-musician, average listener), the prototype acts as a perceptual attractor. Support for this theory comes from experiments showing that that the position of the prototype along the perceptual function continuum can shift when the attention of the listener is deliberately manipulated. A&R Theory has formed the basis for my model of speech perception development called the Prototype Conversion Model which claims that infants' speech-sound prototypes are initially repellors since infants are able to focus most of their attention onto the sounds of speech, but that these repellors gradually convert to attractors when the infants' attention is distracted by higher-order linguistic functions such as learning their first words. Other work on prototypes in this dissertation has argued that prototypes are highly context-sensitive and that they do not depend initially on exposure to a native language, as has often been claimed in the literature.

Many virtual environments like interactive computer games, educational software or training simulations make use of speech to convey important information to the user. These applications typically present a combination of background music, sound effects, ambient sounds and dialog simultaneously to create a rich auditory environment. Since interactive virtual environments allow users to roam freely among different sound producing objects, sound designers do not always have exact control over what sounds the user will perceive at any given time. This dissertation investigates factors that influence the perception of speech in virtual environments under adverse listening conditions.

Streszczenie:
This thesis concentrates on the temporal aspects of the auditory-visual integratory perceptual experience described above. It is organized in two parts, a literature review, followed by an experimentation section. After a brief introduction (Chapter One), Chapter Two begins by considering the evolution of the earliest biological structures to exploit information in the acoustic and optic environments. The second part of the chapter proposes that the auditory-visual integratory experience might be a by-product of the earliest emergence of spoken language. Chapter Three focuses on human auditory and visual neural structures. It traces the auditory and visual systems of the modem human brain through the complex neuroanatomical forms that construct their pathways, through to where they finally integrate into the high-level multi-sensory association areas. Chapter Four identifies two distinct investigative schools that have each reported on the auditory-visual integratory experience. We consider their different experimental methodologies and a number of architectural and information processing models that have sought to emulate human sensory, cognitive and perceptual processing, and ask how far they can accommodate a bi-sensory integratory processing. Chapter Five draws upon empirical data to support the importance of the temporal dimension of sensory forms in information processing, especially bimodal processing. It considers the implications of different modalities processing differently discontinuous afferent information within different time-frames. It concludes with a discussion of a number of models of biological clocks that have been proposed as essential temporal regulators of human sensory experience. In Part Two, the experiments are presented. Chapter Six provides the general methodology, and in the following Chapters a series of four experiments is reported upon. The experiments follow a logical sequence, each being built upon information either revealed or confirmed in results previously reported. Experiments One, Three, and Four required a radical reinterpretation of the 'fast-detection' paradigm developed for use in signal detection theory. This enables the work of two discrete investigative schools in auditory-visual processing to be brought together. The use of this modified paradigm within an appropriately designed methodology produces experimental results that speak directly to both the 'speech versus non-speech' debate and also to gender studies.

Streszczenie:
This thesis investigates methods for visual speech enhancement to support auditory and audiovisual speech perception. Normal-hearing non-native listeners receiving cochlear implant (CI) simulated speech are used as ‘proxy’ listeners for CI users, a proposed user group who could benefit from such enhancement methods in speech perception training. Both CI users and non-native listeners share similarities with regards to audiovisual speech perception, including increased sensitivity to visual speech cues. Two enhancement methods are proposed: (i) an appearance based method, which modifies the appearance of a talker’s lips using colour and luminance blending to apply a ‘lipstick effect’ to increase the saliency of mouth shapes; and (ii) a kinematics based method, which amplifies the kinematics of the talker’s mouth to create the effect of more pronounced speech (an ‘exaggeration effect’). The application that is used to test the enhancements is speech perception training, or audiovisual training, which can be used to improve listening skills. An audiovisual training framework is presented which structures the evaluation of the effectiveness of these methods. It is used in two studies. The first study, which evaluates the effectiveness of the lipstick effect, found a significant improvement in audiovisual and auditory perception. The second study, which evaluates the effectiveness of the exaggeration effect, found improvement in the audiovisual perception of a number of phoneme classes; no evidence was found of improvements in the subsequent auditory perception, as audiovisual recalibration to visually exaggerated speech may have impeded learning when used in the audiovisual training. The thesis also investigates an example of kinematics based enhancement which is observed in Lombard speech, by studying the behaviour of visual Lombard phonemes in different contexts. Due to the lack of suitable datasets for this analysis, the thesis presents a novel audiovisual Lombard speech dataset recorded under high SNR, which offers two, fixed head-pose, synchronised views of each talker in the dataset.

Streszczenie:
The article is dedicated to one of the most famous rationales for the right to free expression of views and opinions, the marketplace of ideas theory, as well as John Milton’s pamphlet “Areopagitica” which is considered the first example of systematic protection of freedom of speech and the primary source for the theory. The combination of the author of the 17th century and the thinking that was finally formed in the 20th century should not be surprising, because Milton is considered the forerunner of marketplace arguments. Given the fact that freedom of speech is threatened today by authoritarianism amplified by modern technologies, as well as identity politics and political correctness, the actualization of arguments in its favor seems more relevant than ever. When covering the main topics of “Areopagitica”, emphasis is placed on the historical conditioning of Milton’s arguments. His position on freedom is based on ancient Greek models and seems rather elitist today, and his perception of heresy is pagan rather than Christian. It’s also worth remembering that Milton opposed pre-publication censorship but did not object to the persecution of dangerous ideas and books after publication, and also definitely excluded Roman Catholicism from the free circulation of ideas. Today, this kind of restriction is considered unacceptable. A fundamentalist interpretation of the free market of ideas which excludes any regulation is obviously not conducive to such a discussion. Utopian ideas about absolute freedom of speech rather harm it, give rise to inflated expectations and, as a result, disappointment in its capabilities or demonization. In this context, reading John Milton’s “Areopagitica” can be extremely instructive today. Key words: freedom of speech; marketplace of ideas; “Areopagitica”; censorship; identity politics; political correctness.

Streszczenie:
The article clarifies of gender identity stereotypes in modern media. The main gender stereotypes covered in modern mass media are analyzed and refuted. The model of gender relations in the media is reflected mainly in the stereotypical images of men and woman. The features of the use of gender concepts in modern periodicals for women and men were determined. The most frequently used derivatives of these macroconcepts were identified and analyzed in detail. It has been found that publications for women and men are full of various gender concepts that are used in different contexts. Ingeneral, theanalysisofthe concept-maximums and concept-minimum gender and their characteristics is carried out in the context of gender stereotypes that have been forme dand function in the society, system atizing the a ctual presentations. The study of the gender concept is relevant because it reveals new trends and features of modern gender images. Taking into account the special features of gender-labeled periodicals in general and the practical absence of comprehensive scientific studies of the gender concept in particular, there is a need to supplement Ukrainian science with this topic. Gender psychology, which is served by methods of various sciences, primarily sociological, pedagogical, linguistic, psychological, socio-psychological. Let us pay attention to linguistic and psycholinguistic methods in gender studies. Linguistic methods complement intelligence research tasks, associated with speech, word and text. Psycholinguistic methods used in gender psychology (semantic differential, semantic integral, semantic analysis of words and texts), aimed at studying speech messages, specific mechanisms of origin and perception, functions of speech activity in society, studying the relationship between speech messages and gender properties participants in the communication, to analyze the linguistic development in connection with the general development of the individual. Nowhere in gender practice there is the whole arsenal of psychological methods that allow you to explore psychological peculiarities of a person like observation, experiments, questionnaires, interviews, testing, modeling, etc. The methods of psychological self-diagnostics include: the gender aspect of the own socio-psychological portrait, a gender biography as a variant of the biographical method, aimed at the reconstruction of individual social experience. In the process of writing a gender autobiography, a person can understand the characteristics of his gender identity, as well as ways and means of their formation. Socio-psychological methods of studying gender include the study of socially constructed women’s and men’s roles, relationships and identities, sexual characteristics, psychological characteristics, etc. The use of gender indicators and gender approaches as a means of socio-psychological and sociological analysis broadens the subject boundaries of these disciplines and makes them the subject of study within these disciplines. And also, in the article a combination of concrete-historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is implemented. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. Also used is a method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-stamped journals. It was he who allowed quantitatively to identify and explore the features of the gender concept in the pages of periodicals for women and men. A combination of historical, structural-typological, system-functional methods is also implemented in the article. Descriptive and comparative methods, method of typology, modeling are used. A method of content analysis for the study of gender content of modern gender-labeled journals is also used. It allowed to identify and explore the features of the gender concept quantitatively in the periodicals for women and men. The conceptual perception and interpretation of the gender concept «woman», which is highlighted in the modern gender-labeled press in Ukraine, requires the elaboration of the polyfunctionality of gender interpretations, the comprehension of the metaphorical perception of this image and its role and purpose in society. A gendered approach to researching the gender content of contemporary periodicals for women and men. Conceptual analysis of contemporary gender-stamped publications within the gender conceptual sphere allows to identify and correlate the meta-gender and gender concepts that appear in society.

Streszczenie:
As a public agency, interacting with and understanding the public’s perspective regarding agency activities is an important endeavor for the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). Although INDOT conducts a biennial customer satisfaction survey, it is occasionally necessary to capture public perception regarding more specific aspects of INDOT’s activities. In particular, INDOT needs an effective way to measure and track public opinions and awareness or understanding of a select set of its traffic engineering practices. To evaluate public acceptance of specific INDOT traffic engineering activities, a survey consisting of 1.000 adults residing within the State of Indiana was conducted. The survey population was representative in terms of age and gender of the state as of the 2010 U.S. Census. The survey was administered during the months of July and August 2020. Public awareness regarding emerging treatments not currently implemented in Indiana is low and opposition to the same new technologies is prominent. Older or female drivers are less likely to be aware of emerging treatments, and older drivers are more likely to oppose potential implementation of these treatments. Although roundabouts are commonplace in Indiana, multi-lane roundabouts remain controversial among the public. Regarding maintenance and protection of traffic during work zones and considering full or partial roadway closure, public preference is for partial closure; this preference is stronger in rural areas. The public equally agrees and disagrees that INDOT minimizes construction related traffic delays. Approximately 76% of Indiana drivers believe themselves to above average drivers, while an additional 23% believe themselves to be average. Driver perceptions of average highway speeds speed are not aligned with posted speed limit as the perceived average speed on Indiana’s urban freeways and rural and urban state highways is considerably higher than the actual speed limit.

Main objectives of the study are the phenomenological tools of the effectiveness of deviatological control of the influence of television text on the formation of emotional tone of society. Particular attention is paid to the additional emotional meanings that arise when speaking live due to lack of time to understand them. Because of this, emotional nuances, and often the emotional background in general, arise involuntarily, against the wishes of the author. Emphasis is placed on making appropriate recommendations to TV journalists. During the Russian aggression in the Ukrainian media, the responsibility for maintaining the proper emotional tone of society is growing. Television plays an important role in Ukraine in this regard. Deviatological control of society is weakened, so more attention should be paid to professional organizations. Since we are talking about the effectiveness of deviatological control of the influence of television text on the formation of emotional tone of society, we must first keep in mind the phenomenological tools of this influence. Recently, phenomenological tools have been used more and more often during the analysis of journalistic texts in terms of the effectiveness of their impact on the mass audience. The methods of phenomenology prove to be the most effective when it comes to various aspects of spontaneous speech, which is represented in the mass media by live television broadcasting. Additional emotional meanings arise when speaking live because of the lack of time to understand them. Because of this, emotional nuances, and often in general the emotional background, which consists, at first glance, it is unknown what, arises involuntarily, against the wishes of the author. Most often, so involuntarily and contrary to out of nowhere negative color and negative emotional background. Thus, it is not a question of creating a positive emotional background in society. Even more, it is not even about an emotionally neutral perception of reality with elements of objectivity. Everything is extremely bad in our house and in the world. Results/findings and conclusions of my research: in order to improve live broadcasting, such application of phenomenological methods in the evaluation of the text from a deviatological point of view should take place at an early stage, and may precede it (the text) utterance. Key words: television, live broadcast, TV journalist, broadcast of television journalists, phenomenological tools, deviatological control, emotional tone of society.

Streszczenie:
This study conducted an evaluation of high-mast roadway lighting, which included a review of Illinois Department of Transportation’s high-mast lighting specification and a field experiment. The lighting specification was reviewed for potential cost-saving measures. Recommended changes included the use of an external drive mechanism, a design-by-application mounting ring, and using the industry standard handhole design. The field experiment consisted of two human factors evaluations. In one evaluation, participants were driven along I-57 through five interchanges with various lighting designs and answered questionnaires about the lighting. Results showed that interchanges that were fully lit outperformed partially lit interchanges for perceptions of comfort, safety, and visibility regardless of whether the interchange used conventional lighting or high-mast lighting. When comparing participants’ responses between high-mast lighting at full intensity or at a 50% dim level, there was no change in perceptions of comfort, safety, or visibility. In the second evaluation, radar sensors were placed at key locations at each interchange and the speed behavior of traffic was recorded and analyzed. Speed analysis showed that lighting designs using only high-mast lighting had a potential ±safety benefit via reductions in vehicle speed variation. Comparing high-mast lighting at full intensity and at a 50% dim level, the dimmed lighting resulted in a significant reduction in speed for exiting traffic. Furthermore, dimming improved safe speed behavior on ramp segments while not significantly affecting the speed behavior for vehicles traveling through the interchange. Recommendations based on the results include using full interchange lighting designs, using a single light type (conventional or high mast, but not both), using a lower light level, and dimming lighting during times of low traffic volume.
