This article discusses the experiences and challenges of introducing a third-party learning support provider into the teaching and learning culture at Southern Cross University (SCU), a regional university with campus locations in New South Wales and Queensland. The provider was engaged to extend online study support after-hours to first year students to complement the on-campus and online academic skills consultations available during business hours. The case study covers a 2015 pilot, a wider roll-out in 2016, and finally, a 2017 university-wide access via the intranet as well as through nominated units. The project team collaborated, planned, and prepared for adding third-party student support with specific strategies used to implement institutional cultural change. The case study offers implications for practice and policy across the higher education sector through the lessons learned, including the need for a complementarity of services approach with existing student services, a team-based strategic approach with a provider representative, and the benefits from open and positive communication. The partnership between SCU and the third-party provider evolved to the mutual benefit of both organisations. Students received support and feedback when they needed it most, academic staff revitalised coursework, and the third-party provider fine-tuned a targeted service for the institution. Implications for practice or policy: Situate the academic skills support services provided in-house and the service provided by the third-party provider as complementary to each other. Re-enforce this complementarity in all communication with students and academic staff. Adopt a team-based approach to planning the introduction and implementation of a third-party provider’s services. Utilise the provider’s strengths, such as data generation and reporting, that enable student usage information about the after-hours service to be disseminated across the university.

The rights of children and adolescents are provided by law and it is the duty of the State, family and society to care for them. Health and education professionals are responsible for reporting suspected or confirmed cases of rights violation. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and qualification of violation of children’s and adolescents’ rights in the State of Paraná between 2009 and 2014. A descriptive and observational quantitative study was carried out based on the records of the Child Protective Services in Paraná, accessed through the Information System for Childhood and Adolescence (SIPIA). A total of 129.123 violations of rights were found. Among those cases, the right to familiar and communitarian companionship stands out with the greatest number of violations, followed by the right to education, culture, sports and leisure. Mothers were found to be the main aggressors, followed by fathers, and sexual violence/abuse was the most prevalent type of violence. In conclusion, there was a significant amount of violation of children’s and adolescents’ rights in the State of Paraná during the period covered by this research, and it has increased over the years. Besides, we found out that there is a predisposition of gender and age group for each variable analyzed.

Abstract This study explores the operative capacity of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the Southern region of Punjab Province, Pakistan. Data from all functional NGOs registered with the Social Welfare and the Bait-ul-Maal Department, Punjab under the provisions of the Voluntary Social Welfare Agencies (Registration and Control) Ordinance, 1961 were collected. A questionnaire based on basic information about NGOs, namely about membership, elections, services offered and opportunities for capacity building, was used for data collection. The results of the study identify education, health, and vocational and technical training as the three major areas of activity for NGOs in the Southern region. The study also found that NGOs do not have an adequate democratic process for elections. Women’s participation is less than men’s in general and in particular regarding membership of executive bodies. The core areas where gaps in capacity building were found are in governance and leadership, financial and human resource management, record maintenance and reporting. On the basis of the findings of this study, it is suggested that NGOs should extend their areas of operation and field of services, and that the democratic process could be ensured by concerned departments through proper monitoring and surveillance.

Abstract It aims to evaluate the association between dental appearance and Oral Health Related Quality of Life. Fifteen primary care services with dental services were selected in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Individuals were interviewed from a random sampling of households in the catchment area of the health centres. The outcome was having an OHIP14 score > 0 (any impact). The main exposures included self-reported tooth colour and position, perception of oral health and concern with dental aesthetics. Data were analysed with stepwise logistic regression. Of 1943 individuals contacted, 433 used public dental services in the last year. Seventy-three percent had some impact on quality of life, 35.2% and 47.5% reported stained and crowded teeth, respectively. Also, 22.2% had already tried bleaching their teeth. Individuals concerned with colour were 2.56 times (95% CI: 1.34-4.89) more likely to report any impact after adjusting for number of teeth, smoking and education. Concerns about tooth position, reporting stained or crowded teeth, age, sex and income were not significant (p > 0.30). There is a direct and independent association between concerns with tooth colour and quality of life. The effect of tooth colour on quality of life may be mediated by individuals’ perceptions of aesthetics.

Abstract There are three interlocking factors impacting the health of older-adults. First is food access, the ecologies of their community and the systems they interact with. In the community of this study the local grocery store closed limiting food access. The ecology of the environment is a heat island; which leads to the incidence of higher mortality amongst other health effects. The interacting systems are the economy, ageism, classism, racism, and, sexism. This conceptual model encapsulates the environment impacting one community of older adults in Atlanta, GA from a mixed methods study employing survey and photoelicitation with the purpose of examining the facilitators and barriers to healthy eating by senior-center clients served by Open Hand Atlanta; a meals and nutrition education provider. Descriptive statistics showed food insecurity to be double that of older adults statewide (19%), 7.9 % reporting consuming at least 5 cups of fruit and vegetables per day, and participants were mostly black women (79 %) . Additionally, residents also live in a community where a portion has been deemed a toxic Superfund site because of elevated levels of lead in soil. The model, therefore, contributes to a comprehensive understanding of how the health of older adults is impacted by a multitude of systems and climate change. It can be used as a guide for other communities, community-dwelling older adults, and older-adult service providers. Furthermore, this model illustrates the systems impacting the health of older southern adults.

Context: HIV/AIDS has been a major public health concern worldwide, yet research on high-risk populations in Vietnam has paid little attention to prevention information, sexual behaviors, and discrimination. Aims: To investigate the above-mentioned groups’ exposure to prevention information, sexual health, and experiences of discrimination. Methods: The cross-sectional paper-based survey focusing on HIV-related risk behaviors, testing, and access to health services was administered to participants recruited through two-stage sampling in southern Vietnam. The questionnaire consisted of four sections, including sociodemographic characteristics, sexual behaviors, access to preventive information, and discrimination experience. Results: Among the 173 participants, approximately 60% identified as lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender, with 51.4% reporting they had a potential risk of HIV acquisition and 85% engaging in high-risk sexual behaviors. Television was the most popular source of information on HIV prevention. The most common unsafe behavior among respondents was non-condom use during sex (72% in males and 25% in females), followed by drug use (41% in males and 7.4% in females). Significant disparities were identified in STI diagnosis, treatment, and HIV testing rates among sociodemographic groups (such as orientation, education, occupation, monthly income, and financial vulnerability). Discrimination experiences were also associated with different sociodemographic characteristics (such as men who have sex with men orientation, occupation, and engagement in high-risk sexual behaviors). Conclusions: Policymakers can allocate financial resources and support evidence-based interventions to address the HIV epidemic among high-risk populations in Vietnam, including educational campaigns on television, healthcare provider training programs, and stigma reduction efforts.

The study on girl child sexual abuse and whose findings are presented in this article was conducted in 2010 as an academic requirement for the purpose of completing a Master’s degree in Gender Studies at the University of Zambia. This article outlines issues of sexual abuse and the various reasons why under-age girls are more vulnerable to sexual abuse, cultural beliefs with regard to sexual abuse, gender and power relations and sexual abuse, and existing community programmes and knowledge levels, and institutional mechanisms of the sexual abuse case reporting in Lusaka urban. The article has drawn conclusions and recommendations for enhancing the protection of the children against child sexual abuse. By conducting a study that comprehensively assesses the types of programmes and perceived implementation gaps from Lusaka, this report poses specific policy and structural recommendations on how best to address the existing problem of increased vulnerability of under-age girls to sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse is a form of abuse in which a child is abused for the sexual gratification of an adult or older adolescent (CHIN, 2005: 53). Child sexual abuse is the actual or the likely sexual exploitation of a child and includes rape, incest and all forms of sexual activity (VSO, 2008: 2). In Zambia, anyone under the age of sixteen is classified as a child. Researchers cite various reasons why child sexual abuse is so common: Gender power relations (patriarchy views which place women and children in lower positions), poverty, a legacy of violent homes, power relations between children and adults, and cultural beliefs. The research was an exploratory study undertaken in Lusaka urban and endeavored to explore why the problem of sexual abuse was persistent and why under-age children were vulnerable to it. Using purposive and simple random sampling, a sample size of seventy was arrived at and both qualitative and quantitative approaches of research were employed. The data was then analysed manually and by Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The institutions visited were: Ministry of Community Development and Social Welfare, Women and Law in Southern Africa Trust, The Child Protection Unit of the Zambia Police Service, Young Women Christian Association, Isubilo Orphanage and Drop-in Centre and Jesus Cares Ministries Orphanage. Additionally, community members from Chawama, Mtendere and Kabwata compounds were interviewed for more insight into the study. The study results showed that under-age girl-children were more vulnerable to sexual abuse because they were easy to coerce, threaten, lure and could be more trusting than much older girls. Further, the study revealed that gender-power relations, power relations between children and adults, cultural beliefs and community programmes on sexual abuse played a role in girl child sexual abuse. The overall study recommendations were coined from the outcomes and conclusions made in the study as follows: children needed more focused education to increase their knowledge about child sexual abuse; intensify funding injections into already functional community and school programmes, for example the School Liaison Programme under the Zambia Police Service; putting in place a holistic approach to sensitise community members centring on encroaching cultural norms and practices that perpetrate child sexual abuse; there was need to intensify and widen the coverage of programmes on child sexual abuse clearly stipulating and defining types of sexual abuse; the law and punishment for perpetrators; perceived gaps in the awareness programmes and institutional mechanism for sexual abuse case reporting was bureaucratically long, long court procedures and negative cultural doctrines also played a role and as such needed attention.

This paper presents critical reflections regarding entangled relationships between access, communication and inclusion and illustrates how these play out across multiple analytical scales, ranging from interactional data analysis to engagement with policy data. The study draws on our ethnographic fieldwork from two large projects where roughly 45 18-50+ year-old people have been shadowed across settings. The study aims to illuminate dimensions of analyst’s participation in terms of the flow of the everyday lives of people they track within and across physical-online spaces and within and across education, workplaces, cultural settings, homes, leisure-time, governmental agencies, health services, social media, etc. Such a stance acknowledges the mobile yet situated, partial and limited nature of contemporary existence and that of knowledge generation within the research enterprise. By engaging with what we call a “second wave of southern perspectives” (SWaSP), the access that scholars have and the identity-positionings of people they track can be understood in terms of (non)support i.e. (non)affordances of different settings for human beings’ possibilities to engage in social practices. In addition to bringing into dialogue different theoretical clusters within a SWaSP framing, the study goes beyond essentialized ways of understanding methodologies or single project reporting, and attempts to shed light on the chained entanglements, intersections and enactments of policy and practice, artefacts and humans, including the ways in which such relationships seldom present themselves in an intuitive manner for the analyst (or project participants). A SWaSP framing is attended to as dimensions of doing multiple-scale ethnography, in terms of being positioned as scholars who are mobile across contemporary physical-online spaces, are reflexive about their mobile gaze and who follow individuals, tools and inscriptions as they emerge across online/physical/private/institutional spaces. Where someone is, how and when people meet, what such meetings offer in terms of positionality, opportunities, meaning-making and learning, are riddled with continua and disruptions that not only create analytical and methodological dissonance in mainstream scholarship but, more significantly, emerge as challenges for scientific enquiry by taking onboard the very theoretical and methodological implications of such continua and disruptions.

Background Despite a remarkable progress in the reduction of global rate of maternal mortality, cervical cancer has been identified as the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, particularly in sub-Saharan African countries. The uptake of cervical cancer screening service has been consistently shown to be effective in reducing the incidence rate and mortality from cervical cancer. Despite this, there are limited studies in Ethiopia that were conducted to assess the uptake of cervical cancer screening and its predictors, and these studies showed inconsistent and inconclusive findings. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the pooled cervical cancer screening utilization and its predictors among eligible women in Ethiopia. Methods and findings Databases like PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, CINAHL, Psychinfo, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and the Cochrane Library were systematically searched. All observational studies reporting cervical cancer screening utilization and/ or its predictors in Ethiopia were included. Two authors independently extracted all necessary data using a standardized data extraction format. Quality assessment criteria for prevalence studies were adapted from the Newcastle Ottawa quality assessment scale. The Cochrane Q test statistics and I2 test were used to assess the heterogeneity of studies. A random effects model of analysis was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of cervical cancer screening utilization and factors associated with it with the 95% confidence intervals (CIs). From 850 potentially relevant articles, twenty-five studies with a total of 18,067 eligible women were included in this study. The pooled national cervical cancer screening utilization was 14.79% (95% CI: 11.75, 17.83). The highest utilization of cervical cancer screening (18.59%) was observed in Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples’ region (SNNPR), and lowest was in Amhara region (13.62%). The sub-group analysis showed that the pooled cervical cancer screening was highest among HIV positive women (20.71%). This meta-analysis also showed that absence of women’s formal education reduces cervical cancer screening utilization by 67% [POR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.23, 0.46]. Women who had good knowledge towards cervical screening [POR = 3.01, 95%CI: 2.2.6, 4.00], perceived susceptibility to cervical cancer [POR = 4.9, 95% CI: 3.67, 6.54], severity to cervical cancer [POR = 6.57, 95% CI: 3.99, 10.8] and those with a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) [POR = 5.39, 95% CI: 1.41, 20.58] were more likely to utilize cervical cancer screening. Additionally, the major barriers of cervical cancer screening utilization were considering oneself as healthy (48.97%) and lack of information on cervical cancer screening (34.34%). Conclusions This meta-analysis found that the percentage of cervical cancer screening among eligible women was much lower than the WHO recommendations. Only one in every seven women utilized cervical cancer screening in Ethiopia. There were significant variations in the cervical cancer screening based on geographical regions and characteristics of women. Educational status, knowledge towards cervical cancer screening, perceived susceptibility and severity to cervical cancer and history of STIs significantly increased the uptake of screening practice. Therefore, women empowerment, improving knowledge towards cervical cancer screening, enhancing perceived susceptibility and severity to cancer and identifying previous history of women are essential strategies to improve cervical cancer screening practice.

High levels of stress in the academic environment is linked to a lack of clarity in academic role and a phenomenon of chronic overwork caused by changing HEI's structures and expectations. But there is a current positive trend of universities developing more and more wellbeing policies, which means impact of technology in higher education institutions learning environment. The major aim of this research paper is to identify the dimensions, which is the best predictor of overall service quality in higher educational institutions service sector. EduQUAL item in original form is not enough in the context of southern tamilnadu educational environment. A five dimension EduQUAL item including customer evaluation revealed reliable and valid results in one of the southern states of India i.e. Tamilnadu context. The researcher has used SPSS for analyzing the data and AMOS The significant coefficient is Assurance dimension and the remaining 6 predictors are non-significant. The non-significance variable exceeds 0.05, and do not contribute much to the regression model. This means that the Assurance dimension is the main predictor for overall satisfaction of students.

The current investigation examined the relationship between masturbation and body image among 96 women seeking services at a local family planning clinic in a mid-southern U.S. city. Participants completed a questionnaire that assessed body image and masturbatory practices. Ethnic differences were found with European American women reporting greater masturbation frequencies and higher rates of body dissatisfaction than African American women. Among European American women, there was a positive relationship between women's sexual self-pleasuring and positive body image. For African American participants, body image was not related to masturbation practice or frequency.

This service activity aims to socialize tips for writing international journals and introduce international journals for mathematics education for mathematics education student. The service method is divided into three stages, namely the preparation stage, the implementation stage, and the reporting stage. Based on the stages of activities that have been planned, community service activities are produced, such as: (1) the preparatory stage is to produce materials and community service instruments. The material produced is in the form of international journal tips, and getting to know international journals in mathematics education. In addition, the resulting instrument is a participant response questionnaire which will be given at the end of the activity; (2) the implementation phase resulted in the introduction of international journals, international journals for mathematics education, and the requirements for writing international journals (3) the reporting stage resulted in an analysis report and evaluation of all processes of community service activities. In conclusion, the results of the dedication show that the students are very happy and well received, so that this workshop has been able to provide a clear picture regarding the tips of international journals (know international journals for mathematics education. Finally, students are expected to be able to get to know international journals for mathematics education well and right.

Accomplished physical education (PE) teachers recognize teachers’ motivation, lesson implementation as well as the application of PE contents. This is because these affect teaching effectiveness in PE class. However, a previous study from Koonsri (2016) found that the teachers lacked motivation and focused on extra money or bonus from their teaching. In addition, because the pre-service PE teachers had poor experiences in teaching and controlling the classes, these issues affected the implementation and integration of the PE contents (Claypan, 2014; Kanchana, 2010). Thus, this study examines the relationship between teachers’ motivation, lesson implementation, and application of PE contents among pre-service PE teachers in Southern Thailand. The instruments regarding teachers’ motivation in terms of intrinsic and external motivation, lesson implementation, and application of PE contents were adopted from Tulyakul (2019). The respondents were 157 pre-service PE teachers in five universities in the border provinces of Southern Thailand. The result shows that there is a relationship between intrinsic and external motivation towards lesson implementation and the application of PE contents among the participants. Finally, there are proposed guidelines for the pre-service PE teachers to adjust and develop their teaching performance to enhance students' achievement in the future

This paper examined the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills of librarians for service delivery in private universities with particular reference to Southern Nigeria. The study adopted the survey research method. Forty-five (45) private university libraries in Southern Nigeria and their librarians constituted the sample size for the study. The study’s samples consisted of 181 librarians in the private universities, hence, total enumeration was adopted. Questionnaire was used for data collection from the respondents. Out of the 181 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 173 were returned and found valid for analysis. Data gathered was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Version 21 and the results were presented in frequency count, percentage, mean and chart. Findings of the study revealed that librarians in private universities in Southern Nigeria delivered various library services to their users. The librarians have acquired basic ICT skills and were versatile in its application for Internet searches, information retrieval, social communication and Microsoft-office related activities with the exception of programming skills. Majority of the librarians acquired their ICT skills through self-learning. The finding revealed that the acquisition of ICT skills by librarians in Southern Nigeria private universities is relevant to their delivery of improved library services. The paper recommended that regular acquisition of relevant ICT skills is essential for librarians and university management should support librarians’ ICT capacity development at national and international levels as this would enhance their relevance and get them abreast of the latest development for effective service delivery.

This study employs descriptive qualitative analysis to explore the experiences of eight Mexican American veterans utilizing Veterans Affairs education benefits to pursue baccalaureate degrees. Participants were recruited in Southern California at two California Community Colleges and three California State Universities. The findings suggest that Mexican American student veterans navigate college and their education benefits based on their experiences in the military. The study identifies five factors Mexican American student veterans negotiate when transitioning to college: (a) minimization of racism; (b) lack of support; (c) being experiential learners; (d) substitute leadership; and (e) being financially motivated.

Abstract Introduction People who do not perceive themselves as overweight or obese are less likely to use weight loss treatments. However, little is known about weight perceptions and their association with weight loss attempts among people who have served in the military. They represent a special population with regard to weight perceptions as military personnel must meet strict weight standards to remain in military service. Materials and Methods Using data from the U.S.-based 2013–2014 and 2015–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, we fit logistic regression models to determine whether people with overweight or obesity were: (1) more or less likely to underestimate their weight if they reported military service and (2) less likely to attempt weight loss if they underestimated their weight (stratifying by military status). Estimates were adjusted for sociodemographic factors, including objective weight class, gender, age, race/ethnicity, income ratio, comorbidities, and education. This work received exempt status from the Stanford University institutional review board. Results Among 6,776 participants, those reporting military service had higher odds of underestimating their weight compared to those not reporting military service [OR (odds ratio): 1.44; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.15, 1.79]. Underestimating weight was associated with lower odds of attempting weight loss among those reporting military service (OR: 0.20; CI: 0.11, 0.36) and those not reporting military service (OR: 0.27; CI: 0.22, 0.34). Conclusions This study offers the new finding that underestimating weight is more likely among people reporting military service compared to those not reporting military service. Findings are consistent with past work demonstrating that underestimating weight is associated with a lower likelihood of pursuing weight loss. To combat weight misperceptions, clinicians may need to spend additional time discussing weight-related perceptions and beliefs with patients. The present findings suggest such conversations may be especially important for people reporting military service. Future research should be designed to understand the effects of correcting weight misperceptions. This work would advance the science of weight management and offer ways to increase weight loss treatment engagement, prevent chronic conditions, and improve health outcomes, especially among people reporting military service.

This tri-provincial mixed methods study explores the reasons for under reporting abuse of older adults in the Prairie Provinces of Canada. Abuse of community-residing older adults, and specifically the reasons for not reporting such abuse, is poorly understood. This paper discusses the findings of the qualitative arm of the study that collected data through interviews with older adults having histories of abuse, their family members and service providers from related sectors. Content analysis was employed to identify three key themes: (1) recognizing and naming abuse; (2) barriers to disclosure; and (3) facilitators of reporting. Recommendations are made to improve awareness, education, and service provision in prevention and treatment of the abuse of community-residing older adults.

BACKGROUND: Injury prevention interventions are limited in the fire service due to a lack of widespread implementation and underreporting. This creates a significant challenge to improving occupational health. OBJECTIVE: To determine how fire chiefs are promoting reporting and the prevention of physical and mental injuries and illnesses. METHODS: We used an open-ended, qualitative instrument to assess the presence of prevention programs and actions to promote injury and illness reporting in the fire service. The instrument contained six content validated items related to the promotion of prevention interventions and reporting. RESULTS: A total of 54 fire chiefs (age = 51±8y; females = 4, males = 50, years of experience as fire chief = 7±6y) responded to the instrument. A majority (n = 37/54, 68.5%) of the fire chiefs indicated their department had an established health and wellness program. Most fire chiefs reported using established guidelines, education, and a supportive culture to promote prevention and reporting. The cultural stigma of being a firefighter and fear of repercussions were barriers to the promotion of reporting of illness and injury. Fire chiefs stated that they struggled to find ways to effectively promote reporting and prevention strategies. CONCLUSIONS: The success of a fire chief’s promotional efforts was greater in instances where multiple factors were addressed.

Studies have been conducted in Africa to assess camp extension officers’ perception towards their roles, however, little is known about agricultural assistants' perceptions towards their roles, as per government job description in Zambia. It was a cross-sectional qualitative study undertaken from January to July 2023, in which questionnaires were administered to 100 agricultural assistants (AAs) to assess the AAs perception of their roles. The collected quantitative data was analysed by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) computer program. The findings show that most of the interviewed AAs perceived their roles namely; training, technical support, and performance management as important. However, AAs are faced with challenges such as low camp extension officer to farmers ratio; inadequate support to extension service delivery; conflicting methodologies in extension service delivery between public and private sector players; poor extension planning, reporting, and feedback culture; and inadequate in-service and refresher training for AAs. Based on these findings, it is recommended that there is a need to work out all aspects that affect the performance of the AAs' mandated roles. To considerably address the challenges of AAs in Zambia, the study does, however, encourage the government to recruit additional AAs, organise in-service and refresher training for AAs to improve their knowledge and skills, and adequate support to extension delivery. This would assist AAs in carrying out their mandated responsibilities and, ultimately, improve the delivery of extension services for improving agricultural performance across the country.

Researchers used research methods in the form of observation, interviews and literature study. The system design uses Unified Modeling Language and its development uses Rapid Application Development. Combining nursing and athletic training clinical experiences can serve to better prepare the health care student for future team work with other disciplines and a diverse patient population. International service-learning courses can enhance the undergraduate student experience while also serving those most in need. Athletic Training and Nursing students at the University of Southern Maine blend together as an interdisciplinary group to participate in a community based health care initiative to rural citizens in the Dominican Republic. This unique experience assists students to better understand their role as global citizens, introduces cultural competency, and affords the student the opportunity to better identify both the background of the patients they treat, and the differing health care providers they work alongside. A review of literature suggests that incorporating both cultural competency and service learning into existing educational programs increases affective learning and personal development. Service-learning via groupwork benefits students, faculty and the communities involved, enabling students to gain insight into other populations and/or cultures with which they lack familiarity. There are both advantages and disadvantages to integrating cultural competency and service learning into undergraduate programs.

How does live instruction relate to student engagement in distance learning? Does the relationship differ across grade levels? This study addresses these questions by examining data from a random sample of families from a large urban school district in southern California. We find a strong correlation between live instruction and student engagement in online learning among elementary school students, with every additional hour of live instruction per week increasing the probability of reporting that students have completed all their schoolwork by 26%. The correlation is also significant though smaller in magnitude for middle and high school students.

The U.S. Department of Education's Tenth Annual Report to Congress on the Implementation of the Education of the Handicapped Act contains improvements, but most infirmities of previous reports on progress toward meeting the goals of Public Law 94–142. Major criticisms include (a) continued overdependence on reporting numbers of students without descriptions of evolutions in service delivery, and (b) a lack of information about service delivery which includes the perspective of practitioners in local school districts where the service delivery occurs. The report further prompts even more questions about the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) monitoring findings and reinforces the need for improved communication between local practitioners and those who form national public education policy.

Study findings showed that the current NIS arenot sustainable in terms of staffing levels, physical resources or the capacity of the two currently-used computer productsto interface with newer generation products. A critical issue for adopting a regional model is the willingness of localsites to revise their current internal structures and functions. The development of teacher education focusing on reflective practice as well as the study of pre-service teacher reflections are educational concerns. This research seeks to categorize the levels and the nature of pre-service Chemistry teachers' reflections in a public university in Southern Brazil. For this, autoscopies of the pre-service teachers' microteachings were conducted in a supervised internship discipline. Data were collected through an open questionnaire and with the autoscopies of their microteachings. The analytical procedures were performed according to Content Analysis, from which the results show that the pre-service teachers engaged in three distinct levels of reflection: technical descriptions, deliberate reflections and critical reflections when thinking about their own microteaching experiences. By analysing the nature of the reflections, six categories emerged; reflections on: class planning; their teaching; the objectives; personal aspects; the autoscopy; and the students. The research results showed a low incidence of critical reflections, presenting the possible difficulty pre-service teachers had in this level of reflection. The Reflective Intervention proved to be useful for promoting reflections of the three levels of reflection, especially level 2 reflections, which consists of deliberate reflections. The results and analyses of this study contribute to the research in reflective teacher education in science, specifically in regards to a greater understanding of the levels and nature of pre-service teachers' reflections and the use of reflective interventions as an approach to promote critical and deliberate reflections in science teacher education. ABSTRACT: This case introduces the alternatives that companies must consider when deciding how to comply with the SEC’s (U.S. Security and Exchange Commission) 2009 mandate to include financial statements in XBRL format when submitting quarterly and annual reports. Jim’s Sporting Goods, an SEC-accelerated filer, is facing compliance with this mandate in about a year and they are investigating their alternatives. Working with Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement for 2010, students become actively engaged in each of three alternatives. Students first take on the role of an external tagging agent who must map Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement line items to elements in the U.S. GAAP XBRL taxonomy. Students make decisions between competing potential XBRL elements, document their decisions in a spreadsheet, and identify issues to be resolved by Jim’s Sporting Goods’ CFO. Second, students take on the role of an internal accountant who must learn to use an Excel-based software package, Rivet Dragon Tag, to tag Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement line items. Third, students register with and become familiar with an online tagging service to tag Jim’s Sporting Goods’ income statement line items. Finally, students evaluate the three alternatives, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each, and make a recommendation for how to proceed. The case is based on an actual publicly traded company facing the compliance issues presented.

Progressive importance, swelling investment, and mounting national and global competition necessitate evaluation of the service quality of higher education. Quantifiable indicators such as student teacher ratio, student number, women participation, establishing new departments, and increase in the number of universities are no longer enough unless the student’s stand point is considered. This research probed the service quality of higher education in a public university in southern Bangladesh utilizing modified SERVQUAL gap model. The t-test results suggest that there is a significant service gap in all the selected service dimensions such as learning, teaching, recognition, assessment system, internet and library facilities, campus life, and non-academic administration. The results also mirror that little more than half (54.1%) students are satisfied with the service quality of the selected university and almost similar proportion (52.1 %) of the students have future interest in studying in the same university. Regression analysis reveals that learning and recognition are two important determinants of client’s overall satisfaction with the service of selected university. Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) advocates that the university should take immediate step in improving internet and library facilities, campus life, and non-academic administration. The purpose of this study was to determine which factors contribute to the competency of string teachers’ diagnostic skills. Participants were 49 pre-service and in-service orchestra/string music teachers from three geographical divisions as defined by MENC (1984): Eastern (Massachusetts), Southern (Louisiana), and Western (Arizona and California). A researcher-developed survey was organized in three sections: General Information, the Questionnaire, and the Diagnostic Test. Eleven possible contributing factors were examined. Participants’ diagnostic skills were assessed through a researcher-developed diagnostic test. Eleven Two-Way ANOVAs with repeated measures were computed for data analysis. Significant differences were found among subjects by analysis situation, by degree, and between in-service and pre-service teachers.

This study sought to determine the support provided to lecturers from selected universities in Southern Africa in sustaining the integration of technology pedagogies to train in-service teachers after the COVID-19 pandemic era. The study used a multiple case study design and a qualitative research approach as part of an interpretive research paradigm. The study was carried out at two Southern African universities that were conveniently chosen by the researchers as their places of work. A purposive sample of lecturers in the faculties of education that train in-service teachers was selected. Data were gathered through the analysis of documents considered relevant to the study from the studied universities. A focus group discussion was held with 12 lecturers, an open-ended questionnaire was completed by 9 lecturers and open-ended interviews with 6 HODs in the faculties of education were conducted. Data obtained from the participants and the documents examined were analysed using thematic analysis. The study's findings reveal that lecturers from both universities initially had limited knowledge as they were still transforming from face-to-face teaching pedagogies and needed to be knowledgeable about integrating technological pedagogies in training in-service teachers. Findings also show that the universities provided some internet connectivity for lecturers to use especially when they were on campus, but internet access was limited when they moved off campus premises. Institution A failed to give lecturers data for off campus usage, while institution B gave lecturers data for off campus usage, but load-shedding (regulated power outages) took a toll in the country where institution B is situated. The study concludes that lecturers received support from the universities where they work to enable appropriate technology pedagogy integration in the preparation of in-service teachers.

This study aims to examine how and in what ways pre-service teachers’ identities are constructed and developed in student-teaching experiences. In this study, two Taiwanese EFL university pre-service teachers participated in a year-long 2019-2020 case study at Southern University. Data consisted of pre-service teacher multicultural attitudes, the transcriptions of course documents, and open-ended interviews. The study suggests that the pre-service teachers’ beliefs play a significant role in shaping their understanding of language learning and teaching. Additionally, the experiences pre-service teachers have in diverse cultural settings shape their identities and inform their future teaching practices as they develop the ability to connect with their students and offer valuable insights. The results suggest that future pre-service teacher education programs should nurture pre-service teachers’ multicultural awareness and cultural teaching strategies before and during teaching the students.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemics significantly affect teaching and learning. Especially physical education teaching that emphasizes practice in the field or large space. On the other hand, physical education classes must do online teaching, which leads to students not being interested in learning. This reason affects the teacher's motivation, making most teachers bored to teach without motivation. Specifically, in the pre-service physical educators who have low experience in teaching and leads to unenjoyed in their class. Consequently, pre-service physical educators need to find new strategies to teach students to be of greater interest. Thus, this study examined the relationship between teachers' motivation (intrinsic and external motivation) towards teaching strategies among pre-service physical educators. The instruments were regarding teachers' motivation in terms of intrinsic and external motivation and teaching strategies. The respondents were 157 pre-service physical educators in five universities in the border provinces of Southern Thailand. The result showed that there is a relationship between intrinsic and external motivation towards teaching strategies among the participants. These results provide guidelines for pre-service physical educators to improve their teaching and enhance students' achievement in the future through online physical education classes.

Greater disparities and inadequacies of English proficiency (EP) may influence the educational process for EFL teachers of different cultural backgrounds. This study aims at describing the condition of 104 English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ EP in the Southern Region of Sumatra in relation to such variables as education level (EL), cultural backgrounds, teaching assignment level, and gender. Using English test scores of teachers’ teaching status (pre-service and in-service), EL, gender, multicultural education questionnaire, and teaching assignment, teachers’ EP is described. This study reveals that EL affects EP and also becomes the best predictor of their cultural knowledge and experience, such as personal development, leadership, curriculum instruction, general sensitivity, and cultural awareness. Furthermore, teachers teaching at higher levels of education appear to be better in EP than those teaching at lower levels, and in-service teachers are also better than pre-service teachers in their teaching responsibility. Although there is no difference in gender in their EP as a whole, females’ EP, listening skill, and personal development are significantly correlated. The implication of the findings indicates that to be proficient in English and culturally developed with integrity, teachers must have at least a master’s degree in addition to having an in-service status of teaching employment.

Excellent service must be given in order to achieve the vision and mission in improving the quality of education. University autonomy is needed to create more flexible institutional management. One of the autonomy models is the Public Service Agency (BLU). In carrying out its duties, the BLU must use a special pattern in the presentation of its financial statements. The Government Accounting Standards Statement (PSAP) 13 is used to simplify BLU financial reporting. The implementation of PSAP 13 at Universitas Brawijaya was discussed in this study to give an idea of how it was implemented in the Public Service Agency.

Objectives: Suicide rates in India are among the highest in the world, resulting in an estimated 250,000 suicide deaths annually. How the media communicates with the Indian public on the topic of suicide has thus far gone without sufficient scrutiny. The objective of our study was to assess the quality of newspaper reporting of suicide-related news in India against World Health Organization suicide reporting guidelines. Methods: We used content analysis to assess the quality of suicide reporting against World Health Organization guidelines in nine of the most highly read daily newspapers in the southern state of Tamil Nadu between June and December 2016. Five of the nine newspapers under review were in the top 20 most circulated daily newspapers in the country. Results: A total of 1681 suicide articles were retrieved. The mean number of suicide articles per day per newspaper was 0.9%, and 54.5% of articles were 10 sentences or less. The vast majority (95.9%) of articles primarily focused on reporting specific suicide incidents. Harmful reporting practices were very common (e.g. a detailed suicide method was reported in 43.3% of articles), while helpful reporting practices were rare (e.g. just 2.5% gave contact details for a suicide support service). Conclusions: We observed that a daily diet of short and explicit suicide-related news was served up to readers of newspapers. Attempts should be made to understand the perspectives of media professionals in relation to suicide reporting, and to devise strategies to boost the positive contribution that media can make to suicide prevention.

Multiple groups have described strategies for clinical implementation of pharmacogenetics (PGx) that often include internal laboratory tests that are specifically developed for their implementation needs. However, many institutions are not able to follow this practice and instead must utilize external laboratories to obtain PGx testing results. As each external laboratory might have different ordering and reporting workflows, consistent reporting and storing of PGx results within the medical record can be a challenge. This might result in patient safety concerns as important PGx information might not be easily identifiable at the point of current or future prescribing. Herein, we describe initial PGx clinical implementation efforts at a large academic medical center, focusing on optimizing three different test ordering workflows and two distinct result reporting strategies. From this, we identified common issues such as variable reporting location and structure of PGx results, as well as duplicate PGx testing. We identified several opportunities to optimize our current processes, including—(1) PGx laboratory stewardship, (2) increasing visibility of PGx tests, and (3) clinician and patient education. Key to the success was the importance of engaging clinician, informatics, and pathology stakeholders, as we developed interventions to improve our PGX implementation processes.

The character crisis makes Indonesian education urgently need improvement through the educational transformation that not only prioritizes cognitive but also develops the student's skills and character. This study aims to determine the relationship and contribution of counseling guidance services in pesantren to children's character education through service management analysis. The researcher used qualitative research methods with triangulation for data collection. The evaluation instrument involves the Stufflebeam evaluation components. They are context, input, process, and product. The results indicate that the planning and controlling management functions have not been able to function properly and have caused problems in the provided services. The service types have led to increased competence, improved attitudes, and students’ character. However, there were many obstacles in the process. They are funding, infrastructure, implementation time, control from the leadership and administration as well as regular reporting of activities. These conditions have an impact on the role and effectiveness of counseling guidance in assisting santri to maximize their potential and achieve their developmental tasks.

Following the fall of Gaddafi, Libya has fallen apart, and this vast and resource-rich country with around 1,800 km coastline to the southern side of the central Mediterranean has become a failed state. The crisis stemming from Libya has significant impact on the EU: Not only for irregular migration but also due to its security, economic and geopolitical importance to EU. Despite this multifaceted significance, EU Libya poli- cies have been focusing on the migration dimension of the crisis and making use of non-functioning Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) missions as the primary policy tool. That is why the EU missed the oppor- tunity to solve the crisis from an early age and has been sidelined with the escalating conflict. In the absence of EU, rival international actors took over the Libya dossier and started to shape the developments per their interests. If the EU does not take lessons from previous mistakes, it will soon lose its influence over Libya, which might turn out to be quite detrimental for its interests. As this is a multifaceted and multi-dimensional web of relations, the policy paper at hand focuses explicitly on the “migration” dimension and makes infer- ences based on this narrower scope. Interest Groups (IGs) are prominent actors in the migration dimension of the Libya crisis. This policy paper depicts that there are at least 738 IGs concerned with European or global level migration & asylum policies, and they have had hundreds of interactions with members of the EU Commission and Parliament. IGs have been spending money, energy and other resources to influence the EU policies in this field. However, up to now, just like EU Libya policies, their efforts on migration-related problems stemming from Libya has failed. Following a comprehensive description of the current status of migration dimension of EU Libya policies together with the role of various IGs, this policy brief examines the causes of (in)effectiveness of IGs’ efforts in influencing EU policies. It argues that public salience, internal security concerns of the member states and highly politicised nature of the migration issue makes it difficult for IGs to be influence. Irregular migration is not a matter on its own; it is a consequence of a causal link. In solving the issue, the EU needs a multifaceted approach, which considers IGs an integral partner and utilises IGs soft power, knowledge and expertise to increase the EU’s leverage. The policy paper at hand recommends EU and IGs to develop a partnership model which requires coordi- nation and assistance in Libya matters, without damaging the neutral interlocutor position of the IGs. This new model foresees IG support in handling IDPs, refugees/irregular migrants, training and monitoring of the Libyan officials, or in reporting about the humanitarian aspects. Requires EU to utilise IGs in addressing the sources of grievances between local ethnic, tribal and religious groups, or facilitating the truth-seeking ven- tures and repairing the relations between rival groups. IGs can support EU policies by providing mentorship to sovereign economic, financial, auditing institutions or misfunctioning judiciary, public health or education institutions. EU should benefit from IGs in the prevention of radicalisation/extremism, as well. For the sake of preventing the emergence of several and conflicting member state Libya policies, EU su- pranational bodies should lead to the process vis á vis overall EU interests. To save IGs from the complex power-sharing structure, European External Action Service should undertake the one single coordinator role with IGs. EU officials should encourage or —if need be— stipulate Libyan authorities to cooperate with IGs in their operations for Libya. EU may consider using military CSDP operations or EU battlegroup to protect the peace process from spoilers or destructive foreign meddling or defend the governing institutions from the impact of various militia groups and enforce the arms embargo. EU should also activate a competent sanctions policy against the spoilers of the process. Another crucial task for the EU will be the construction of a unified and reliable security apparatus. IGs can build the support that the EU requires on the ground. EU requirements overlap with IGs interests; they both need to construct a thriving society, inclusive politics, and good governance, which will make Libya a hard-to-find neighbour/ally to the EU.

This article is a systematic analysis and synthesis of published research from 1985–2000 recommending or reporting on postsecondary education services for students with learning disabilities. Twenty-six articles met the criteria of recommending services or describing services presently available. The 11 program factors examined were: definition of learning disability, characteristics of adult learners, type of institution, special admission procedures, assessment services, program accommodations, support services, instructional adjustments, instructional staff training, direct service staff training, and program evaluation. Implications and recommendations for postsecondary program development are presented.
