This article examines the legacy of Pitirim A. Sorokin (1889–1968), a Harvard sociologist from the Russian emigration. The authors scrutinise Sorokin as one of the nodal points for today’s moral conservatism. As a scholar, Sorokin has been relegated to the margins of his discipline, but his legacy as a public intellectual has persisted in the United States and has soared in Russia over the last three decades. This article examines Sorokin’s reception in these two nations, some of whose citizens have facilitated the burgeoning transnational phenomenon of twenty-first-century moral conservatism. Four aspects of Sorokin’s legacy are especially relevant in this context: his emphasis on values, his notion of the ‘sensate culture’, his ideas about the family, and his vision for moral revival. The authors conclude that Sorokin functions as a nodal point that binds together individual actors and ideas across national, cultural and linguistic barriers. The article is based on a firsthand analysis of moral conservative discourse and documents, on qualitative interviews and on scholarly literature.

The subject of work is the question of V. Sorokin’s creative method. An attempt to explain the writer’s creative nature leads to the idea of an internal contradiction that is characteristic of his work as a whole and is realized in each individual work. The point is that the writer’s creative declaration, reduced solely to a “linguistic experiment”, does not fit well with real practice, which leads to contradictions in the interpretation of his work in criticism. There are as if “two Sorokins”, one insists that his works are exclusively texts for exercises in “transgression”, the other creates dystopias perceived as works saturated with social meanings. V. Sorokin was originally “against literature”, but lives “at the expense” of literature and is interpreted by readers and researchers as literature of the highest level. He dissociates himself from “literary centrism”, but paradoxically becomes its epicenter. This study proves that this contradiction does not really require resolution, it is the “driving force” of the writer’s work, “organic” for the “Sorokin phenomenon”. The result is the creation of a “linguistic dystopia”. The problem is of undoubted relevance, the results of the analysis allow us to clarify important points in assessing the writer’s work.

The article considers the connection between the social-legal theory of P.A. Sorokin and the main directions of the German jurisprudence in the 17th - early 20th century: natural-legal school, historical school, jurisprudence of interests and the theory of the revived natural law. The genesis of Sorokin’s sociological ideas is usually considered in the context of the general development of sociology in the second half of the 19th century - early 20th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, when Sorokin was turning into an independent scholar, sociological issues were discussed in the teaching of other disciplines, in particular legal ones, which Sorokin studied at the Faculty of Law of the Saint Petersburg University. Sorokin’s study of legal sciences, especially of criminal and state law, affected his further research. The author argues that some important aspects of Sorokin’s sociology of law are closely connected with the main directions of the legal thought of his time, in particular with the works of German jurists and philosophers of law. The ideas of all four directions of German jurisprudence are reflected in Sorokin’s works, primarily in the theory of organized groups as a basis of his sociology of law. The classic school of natural law is represented by the social contract theory and corresponds to the purposeful organization of groups. The concept of the organic development of law by the leader of the historical school F.C. von Savigny is reflected in the spontaneous organization of groups. The jurisprudence of interests with R. von Jhering’s idea of the struggle for law anticipated the idea of purposeful formation of law in a social conflict. R. Stammler’s concept of the revived natural law contains a general idea of the organizing role of law. The elements of the first three theories are used by Sorokin in his theory of the origin of organized groups, while Stammler’s idea is close to the general understanding of the social function of law by Sorokin and one of his teachers L.I. Petrażycki.

The article discusses the terminological neologisms of Yu.A. Sorokin as both special lexical and text units. Yu.A. Sorokin had a peculiar predilection to creating terms based on the Greco-Latin derivational morphemes. He treated them creatively introducing new elements and reinterpreting the standard ones, for instance creating new correlative pairs. One of the favorite terminological models of Yu.A. Sorokin was emic which allows to briefly identify the category-forming entities. It is noted that, Yu.A. Sorokin rarely gave precise definitions to his terminological creations and did not worry about their general availability (the sapienti sat principle). Presenting thoughts in the form of postulates, he used the principle in medias res, i.e., he introduced a term / terms to the text without any expositional preparation. The article concludes that the term creation of Yu.A. Sorokin, that may be perceived as non-conformist at first, is quite harmonious in fact. To see that, one just needs to turn to the texts. Yu.A. Sorokins term-generating genre / type of text is a postulate and / or a manifesto, i.e., a text with a focus on concentration and suggestion. Hence, there follows a non-definitive way of presenting a term and terminological amplification, with the author using familiar international terminology, correlative terminological pairs and constellates, parenthetical inserts and graphic tools as cognitive clues for the addressee.

The article is devoted to the history of the controversy that arose after the publication of the first three volumes of “Social and Cultural Dynamics” by Pitirim Sorokin and American anthropologist Alexander Goldenweiser. The reasons why Sorokin’s work was rejected by academic American sociology are analyzed. A full list of reviews on “Dynamics” is provided that was published by international media in 1937–1942. The possible causes of the conflict that broke out between Sorokin and Goldeneizer over the authorship of the “principle of limited opportunities” or the “principle of limit” are analyzed. The appendix to the article includes Goldenweiser’s review of Sorokin’s “Dynamics”, written in the form of a “platonic dialogue”, and Sorokin’s response to it, translated to Russian for the first time.

In 1942, the sociologist Pitirim Sorokin, a survivor of the post-WorldWar I pandemic, published "Man and Society in Calamity," a comparative study of the human response (including political responses) to four recurrent mass-death events. One was "pestilence." Sorokin reached many general conclusions. In Fall of 2020, the author of this paper (Wilkinson) held a seminar whose students attempted to re-evaluate Sorokin's conclusions, based upon their own experiences, observations, and mutual dialogue. In general, the seminar found that Sorokin's conclusions were mostly still applicable, but that his social theory of pestilence needed drastic changes as concerned (a) the gendered, class-based, ethnic and national distribution of pestilence and its consequences of pestilence, (b) the much-changed capacity (from 1942) for the scientific and technological response to pestilence, and (c) the much changed capacity (again, since 1942) for international-organizational response to pestilence. With these updates, Sorokin's theory of the human social response to pestilence can serve as guidance both for study and for policy in regard not only to the current pandemic, but for epidemics and pandemics yet to come.

Sorokin, head of the Harvard Centre for the Study of Creative Altruism, and L. von Wiese, President of the German Society for Sociology and publisher of a respected sociological journal from 1950 to 1966, describes their cooperation on issues of general sociology and in the search for practical ways of humanizing the postwar world. It covers notable events in P.A. Sorokin's scientific biography: his conflict with T. For the reader’s consideration— an article never before translated to Russian written by American anthropologist Alexander Goldenweiser, where he attempts to dismantle the first three volumes of Pitirim Sorokin’s “Social and Cultural Dynamics” that came out in 1937. In it he comprehensively criticizes Sorokin’s “Dynamics” to the point where he completely refutes all of it. The article is written in the form of a “platonic dialog” partaken by world famous scientists, artists and sociologists, with Socrates himself presiding on this “Areopagus”, who, after hearing out the prosecution, sentences Sorokin to capital punishment. Sorokin responded with an article where he analyzed all charges against him and issued his own decisive verdict— “not guilty”. The publication is meant to commemorate 85 years since the release of the first three volumes of “Social and Cultural Dynamics”.

This article presents an introduction to the publication of “Foreword” (1940) — prepared by P.A. Sorokin (1889–1968), a Russian and American sociologist — for the first American edition of “Community and Society” (1887) by F. Tönnies (1855‒1936), a German sociologist. “Foreword” is examined as a standalone theoretical piece in order to complete the historical-sociological facts and circumstances of its creation and publication, the ideological connections of the text in question with any other theories, and above all — with the sociology created by F. Tönnies. In “Foreword”, which is filled with references to ideas by major representatives of Chinese, European and Arab cultures and to the social values in their ideological heritage, P.A. Sorokin established the universal character of the social organization types introduced by F. Tönnies — “community and society” (“Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft” in German) — and stated his ideological affiliation to this dichotomy. Thus, the project for the theory of society and social evolution by P.A. Sorokin has been shown to cover both social forms introduced by F. Tönnies. The identified social values, which constitute an independent foundation for Sorokin’s theory of society and social evolution, help in developing the gnoseological aspect of his sociology. The writing of F. Tönnies, as well as P.A. Sorokin’s “Foreword”, defined their era. They include multiple points for incorporating new ideas in order to expand and evolve the theory of modern society.

Sorokin’s ideas remain relevant in many areas of Psycholinguistics. The specificity of Sorokin’s concept of text understanding is determined by its deep connection with traditions of world Psychology and Linguistics on one hand, and attention to human activity’s specifics where a human being cannot be dissociated from being a part of culture and products of his/her activity (including speech activity), on the other hand. Examining the text as a self-developing entity, Sorokin considers “psychosemantic epistemology” to be the most effective methodology of a literary text’s analysis. It is based on the laws of perception and understanding of a text formulated by Nikolay A. Rubakin. Sorokin believes that a text is a form of substantiation of experience gained by a human being in all sorts of activities. Text as an aggregate of signs has potential content that is formed only in the course of the text’s interpretation. Sorokin studies a number of ethnopsycholinguistic issues, solutions to those issues enables inclusion of the following statements in the theoretical justification of understanding of a text: an individual as a representative of a certain ethnos appropriates ethnically specific ways and means of mastering the world and represents this experience in speech activity; the semiotic-behavioral side of the personality reveals its belonging to the culture of the ethnic group and is reflected in the structure and content of texts created by the individual; language units that possess cultural and symbolic meaning serve as markers of ethnicity. Sorokin considers it necessary to create special “non-analytical” methods of text analysis that would be adequate to its properties as a self-organizing system. First of all, it is the search for tools for measuring subjective assessments that reflect “axiological formats” of understanding or non-understanding of a text (e.g., method of semantic integral).

The article attempts to analyze the experience of the present-day perusal in Russia and the United States of the works of outstanding sociologist P.A. Sorokin, written by him during the Second World War. P.A. Sorokin, a well-known Russian-American sociologist, has always attracted the attention of the scientific community with his extraordinary works that have opened new ways of development for social sciences. One of the issues of interest to the scientist was associated with the identification of the nature and essence of wars. The sociologist substantiated the relationship between the war and the subsequent militarization of society; viewed the fact of depletion of the nation’s “biological fund” as a result of the war; using concrete material, he demonstrated the relationship between wars and revolutions. Defending a sociological approach, the scientist suggested that a specific event should be correlated with the analysis of the war phenomenon as a whole. In his book “The Crisis of Our Time” (1941), P. Sorokin showed that the cause of World War II should be sought not in the peculiarities of totalitarian leaders, but in the disorganization and value disorientation of both international and internal relations of states after the previous war. In the book “Russia and the United States” (1944), P. Sorokin substantiated the idea of close cooperation between military allies as a necessary condition for maintaining a long post-war peace. All of Sorokin’s books have caused and still cause an ambiguous reaction in the American sociological community: from full acceptance to the rejection of his “marginal thoughts”. Our domestic discourse is built on the idea of preserving Sorokin’s heritage (Russian and American), deep study and popularization of his sociological concept.

Within the framework of sociological creativity of Pitirim Sorokin, special attention should be paid to the unique methodology by which this scientist carried out the analysis of large-scale social phenomena, including certainly wars and revolutions. The analysis of “an influence issue” of any global social phenomenon on the life of society is the cornerstone of this methodology. Within the framework of such an extensive problem, P. Sorokin singled out several important components of its issues, and then, for each of them, presented an overview of the accumulated knowledge, proven provisions and existing uncertainties. In general, P. Sorokin’s analysis of theories of wars and revolutions demonstrates that influences of wars and revolutions on society are complicated. Therefore, they cannot be precisely described by simple and unilateral formulas. True theory should explain when, why, under what conditions, and how any factor becomes the real cause of war and why, under what conditions, etc. it does not affect. P. Sorokin, in particular, applied this methodology to the analysis of revolutionary events in Russia in 1917.

The paper gives a review and a critical overview of the theoretical approach to the dynamics of cultural and social changes of renowned sociologist Pitirim Sorokin. The first part of the paper is dedicated to the description of the most relevant theoretical contributions contained in Sorokin's most important book Social and Cultural Dynamics. In the second part of the paper, there is a critical overview by the author of this text of Sorokin's sociocultural dynamics theory, as well as of other authors who have studied Sorokin's approach. The conclusion of this paper is that Sorokin's approach is a very significant theoretical contribution to sociology, but also that his theory does not dedicate sufficient attention to external factors as the causes of sociocultural dynamics.

The article offers an interpretation of the earliest conceptual novel by the famous Russian novelist Vladimir Sorokin “The Queue” (1985). The authors of the article have implemented a new approach to the text of a modern conceptual novelist. If traditionally V. Sorokin’s novel was perceived by critics mainly from the side of the originality of its form, with the actualization of the author’s appeal to the pictorial art objects of conceptual artists (I. Kabakov, V. Pivovarov, D. Prigov et al.), then in this article a different research perspective is justified — the need to look at the Sorokin text as a creative realization of a capacious speech metaphor, as the embodiment of the image of a “language monster” — the hydro-like essence of a “living” queue.

The dispute over the construction of a social system theory, which took place in Harvard between P.A. Sorokin (1889–1968) and T. Parsons (1902–1979), is still drawing the attention of historians and theorists of sociology. Both scientists were greatly respected by the scientific community of those times, both had their unique vision on creating a social theory and, of course, each of them claimed priority in the development of their respective system-sociological theory. According to P.A. Sorokin, who in 1951 was promoting his work “Similarities and Dissimilarities Between Two Sociological Systems” among colleagues from his department and beyond it, T. Parsons’ essays on the topic of social system theory are suspiciously similar to P.A. Sorokin’s lectures and essays — an opinion which in turn was refuted by Parsons. In response to Sorokin’s claims, T. Parsons claimed that his theoretical concept had been influenced more by other authors than by P.A. Sorokin. He also pointed to the process of convergence in system theory and highlighted plenty of other differences between their system theories. All researchers noticed the severity of this conflict, but when we look to the circumstances of the end of this conceptual debate, we find that it is not entirely clear whether it was even resolved, and more importantly — how the conflict actually ended. Analysis of this historical case conducted through the lens of Luhmann’s communicative theory helps get a clearer understanding of the problem. It allows for separating the conceptual implications of the dispute from its other aspects – personal, career, psychological, institutional aspects — which ultimately allowed looking into the conceptual essence of the conflict. The use of new and previously little-known German archival documents, copies of sociologists’ personal letters, journal reviews on sociological theory, journal publications about the conflict allowed to establish the importance of the role played by respected German sociologist L. von Wiese (1876–1969), a personal friend of P.A. Sorokin and an expert in theoretical sociology, in deescalating the conflict and ending the dispute in 1952.

The subject of this article is the theoretical and methodological foundations for P.A. Sorokin’s sociological concept, set forth in his work “The System of Sociology” (1920). The article analyzes Sorokin’s interpretation of the dilemma of nominalism / realism and some general features of the vision of this dilemma in the field of sociological thought, namely: the failure to distinguish the notion “sociality” as an abstract concept and as an idea of society in the Platonic sense, the conversion of said dilemma into the form of the “atomism / holism” antitheses, and an anthropomorphic interpretation of holism. It is shown that in his attempt to establish a realistic view of the nature of social phenomena, while avoiding the extremes of its “literal” interpretation, Sorokin develops the methodology of analytical and material realism. From the author’s point of view, the concept of the conductor proposed by Sorokin corresponds to the modern interest in nonverbal semiotics, while the instrumental interpretation of a person as a participant in social interactions corresponds to later developments, which maintain an “out-of-subject” line in sociological analysis.

SUMMARY: The article discusses the two latest novels by the modern Russian classic writer Vladimir Sorokin: Legacy (2023) and especially Doctor Garin (2021). Based on his interpretation of Sorokin’s aesthetical and philosophical program developed elsewhere, Ilya Gerasimov reads Doctor Garin as a literary work that did not go as planned. Dismayed by the unexpected result, Sorokin wrote Legacy as a follow-up meant to explicate Doctor Garin ’s message and explain it to himself and his readers. Therefore, Legacy develops to the extreme only one aspect of the 2021 novel. According to Gerasimov, Doctor Garin was planned as a postmodernist satire on the Russian intelligentsia, modernist literature, and the very society of modernity that produced them. Doctor Garin and his miraculous method of hypermodernism is an obvious reference to Aleksey Tolstoy’s The Hyperboloid of Engineer Garin (1926–1927) about an impostor and adventurist seeking world domination. Sorokin mocks the modernist belief in “certain schemes to improve the human condition” (to quote this belief’s famous academic critic, James C. Scott) and Russian modernist literature, from Vladimir Mayakovsky to Vasily Aksenov, as well as modern governments’ failed political leadership. For over half of the book, Sorokin sustains his original rational design, channeling all his trademark spontaneous prose into “subtexts” – more or less extensive citations of imagined books or diaries introduced in the main text every 20–30 pages of the book. However, at some point, these subtexts disappear, and the protagonist fully immerses himself in Sorokin’s irrational narrative driven by the logic of language rather than ideological considerations. This change of narrative mode transforms everything – from the protagonist’s personality to the novel’s central message. Gerasimov argues that Sorokin chose time as a central argument of his antimodernist criticism, vindicating postmodernism as a condition of multiple isolated chronotopes, with each subculture or identity group living in a unique temporality of its own – contrary to modernism’s belief in progress and the normative universality of time. However, the spontaneous narrative of the novel’s second half produces a different effect. It models social reality as multidimensional and yet fundamentally interconnected. In any of the very distinctive chronotopes, social reality acquires its stable characteristics only situationally in the eyes of an active subject rather than by some preset, anonymous and objective factors, such as temporality or identity. This message is communicated by the narrative independently of its author, who attempted to produce a different conclusion in the follow-up novel Legacy . Inadvertently, instead of affirming a postmodernist worldview – relativist but static – and mocking the old modernism and some hypothetical “metamodernism” anticipated since the late 2010s, Sorokin outlined a program for a truly new, “post-postmodernist” modernism. It combines postmodernism’s multifaceted, multidimensional view of reality with modernism’s ability to produce a coherent narrative anchored in an unequivocal moral position. It embraces multiple temporalities, but also the idea of the future as a condition radically different from the past and present. Gerasimov uses the difference in conceptualizing temporality as the main criterion differentiating the modernist and postmodernist epistemes, in any of their aesthetic versions, as well as the hypothetical new modernism as spontaneously outlined in Sorokin’s Doctor Garin .

The space of Siberia and Altai, being a traditional locus for placing (anti)utopias, is naturally used by V. Sorokin as an experimental base for historical, cultural and social models. The object of study in this work is the Siberian text of Sorokin, with an emphasis on the image of Altai. The subject of the research is Siberian utopian motifs and chronotopes. The purpose of the article is to designate the author's transformation of motifs and images that are canonical for the Siberian text and have a utopian component. Sorokin's Siberia is value-differentiated, it contains ambivalent uterine-utopian loci that generate or destroy a certain value (substance / object / creature), which in turn is saving or destructive for the character. Altai is usually associated with positive meanings. A way out of the post-apocalyptic retro-futuristic (anti)utopian world into a space less speculative and perfect, but more real is planned.

P. A. Sorokin’s concept of congeniality is presented in the article. This outstanding sociologist believed that after the end of World War II Kant’s idea of eternal peace was no longer utopian. It seemed possible to Sorokin to bring this dream to life. Sorokin saw congeniality as a crucial social factor of a lasting peace and friendship between peoples and countries. He carried out a large-scale comparative study of the USA and Russia and came to the conclusion that these countries are very much alike (they are congenial), thus they would play a leading role in establishing and ensuring peace worldwide. Is it really possible to consider congeniality to be the basis of peace and friendship between peoples and countries? The aim of this article is to present a sociological and theoretical study of this problem. First, Sorokin’s methodology and key congenial characteristics of these two countries are provided in the article. Then, analytical and sociological study of these characteristics is carried out. It is shown that critical approach to Sorokin’s idea of congeniality of societies brings forward the discussion about societies and their interactions in present-day sociology and other social sciences. General scientific methods of deduction and induction as well as analysis and synthesis, document analysis method, system analysis and comparative historical method were used to study the problem presented in the article.

Introduction: in modern linguistics, a branch of linguistics – translation studies – was formed. Its aim is to research the processes of translations from one language to other in different aspects. Based on the material of the Russian Finno-Ugric languages, this branch of science takes its first steps. In this article, we analyze the texts of the autobiography by P. Sorokin «A long Journey. The autobiography of Pitirim Sorokin» (1963) in the Russian and Komi languages; fragments of texts are compared with the original English text; language errors in translation were identified. Objective: to consider the language errors in the use of vocabulary in the text of the translation of P. A. Sorokin’s autobiography into the Komi language identified by systematic comparisons of fragments of texts in the English, Russian and Komi languages. Research materials: the texts of P. A. Sorokin’s autobiography published in separate books of different years. Results and novelty of the research: the article for the first time considers translation errors found in the text of the translation of the autobiography of the world-famous sociologist, a native of the Komi region, Pitirim Alexandrovich Sorokin into the Komi language, published as a separate book in Syktyvkar in 2013. The errors are analyzed on the basis of successive comparisons with the English-language original and the translation of the same book into the Russian, published in Syktyvkar in 1991. The analysis of the translation language (the first 40 pages of the autobiography) allowed us to conclude that the translation into the Komi language was not made from the original language, as it is stated in the bibliographic description, but from the Russian translation of the autobiography, since most of the translation errors from the Russianlanguage text were transferred to the Komi-language text.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the text of P.A. Sorokin’s speech on the occasion of the 103rd anniversary of St Petersburg University on February 21, 1922, which at one time caused a wide resonance and discussion. The purpose of this article, firstly, is to recall this important event in the life of an outstanding social thinker and sociologist and the ideas that he expressed when addressing students. Secondly, to pay attention to the very contradictory history of his life and his personality. Sorokin himself attached great importance to his speech. In his speech, he expressed a sharp rejection of the events that took place in Russia in the 1920s and named the milestones that young people should follow. He developed the main ideas of this speech later in the book “Leaves from a Russian Diary” and in other works. It is noted that Sorokin’s political and ideological position was aggravated by his characterological traits — a commitment to prophecy, broadcasting and catastrophicity, which, as the researchers of his work pointed out, interfered with the impartiality of his ideas. The perception of speech by his colleague, a well-known lawyer, sociologist N.A.Gredeskul, is presented. The author of the article, one of those who took an active part in the “return” of Sorokin to his homeland, considers it necessary to seriously study not only his legacy, but also the dynamics of his worldview, value orientations at different stages of life, without criticism and idealization. It is shown that the content of the speech of P.A. Sorokin and his opponent N.A.Gredeskul has not lost its significance, since the issues discussed are extremely relevant both for modern youth and for our science.

This article examines contemporary Russian postmodernist author Vladimir Sorokin's use of food thematics primarily in works written since the year 2000. Sorokin is perhaps best known for his signature technique of using grotesque sexual or violent imagery to parody the truth claims of various kinds of discourse, whether ideological, religious, or aesthetic. However, in a number of works, beginning with his first novel, The Norm (1983–87), and extending up to such recent short novels such as Day of an Oprichnik (2006) and Candy Kremlin (2008), Sorokin employs food imagery to critique the push for extreme ideological and social cohesion at the heart of Russia's re-embrace of nationalism and empire in the twenty-first century. The author also employs a broad array of food/eating images to critique the country's long-standing tradition of consuming utopian ideologies—from Dostoevsky and Tolstoy in the nineteenth century to Putinism in the twenty-first.

The currently being prepared for publication “Foreword” to F. Tönnies’ work “Community and Society” was written by Harvard University professor P.A. Sorokin (1889–1968), who was a Russian/American sociologist. It was first published alongside the English translation of Tönnies’ book, issued in New York back in 1940. According to P.A. Sorokin, Tönnies’ community and society dichotomy represents a universal categorical description of two opposing forms of social organization. They appear in the social evolution of various civilizations and in the writings of their founders. P.A. Sorokin considered Tönnies to be one of the contemporary successors to the tradition of describing society in such a way. Tönnies’ book was ahead of its time. It is mentioned in “Foreword” that the first German edition, published in 1887, did not attract readers’ attention. However, when the 20th century came around — this book became a point of reference for German social scientists, as well as for educated individuals among the general public. “Foreword” mentions the reason for its rapid increase in popularity, which turned out to be a rapid and widespread transition from “community” to a “society” based on contractual relations. P.A. Sorokin points out that Tönnies created his essay during a time when the “Gesellschaft type of society” was “triumphantly rooting out the Gemeinschaft”. However, even back then Tönnies highlighted the shortcomings of capitalism as a form of social life. The American edition of Tönnies’ book, published in 1940, was its first complete translation to a foreign language (the 1927 Japanese edition had been shortened). P.A. Sorokin’s “Foreword” to this edition marked the beginning of this writing’s worldwide fame. This is the first time “Foreword” has ever been published in Russian. It was not included in the 2002 Russian edition of Tönnies’ book. This publication, however, makes up for such an omission in theoretical sociology. The publication together with commentary has been prepared by N.A. Golovin.

The report examines the peculiarities of bilingualism of the outstanding Russian-American sociologist Pitirim Sorokin (1898–1968) based on his archival working materials from the University of Saskatchewan (Canada). The purpose of the study is to identify and explain the linguistic features of his scientific thinking in connection with the conditions of translinguism. Based on the material of Pitirim Sorokin’s working notes, the features of his work on the creation of the book “Contemporary Sociological Theories” (1928) are considered. Correspondences between the preparatory notes and the final text of the book are established. The specifics of translingual practices in the scientific activity of a scientist are revealed. Archival manuscripts and notes allow you to trace not only the process of changing the language and switching codes. The use of a mixed meta-language by Pitirim Sorokin in the work on the preparatory materials of the book has been established. At the same time, a functional distribution of language codes is revealed. Russian language is a working tool of scientific thinking, planning and management of research activities.

The purpose of the study is to identify and explain the linguistic features of his scientific thinking in connection with the development of his scientific worldview. The study is based on the materials of Pitirim A. Sorokin Collection at the University of Saskatchewan (Canada). Archival manuscripts and research notes allow us to trace the process of changing the language and switching codes in the professional activities of Pitirim Sorokin after moving to the United States of America. It has been established that the use of a mixed metalanguage by Pitirim Sorokin can be considered as additional evidence of the continued connection with the Russian period of his life and scientific activity. Russian remained for him a tool of scientific thinking, planning and management.

The article discusses the Chinese loanwords that appear in the novel Blue Lard by Vladimir Sorokin. The novel contains an allegory of the Russian language of the future. Most of the neologisms created by Sorokin in Blue Lard come from foreign words, including an abundance of Chinese loanwords. The author of the article analyzes the Chinese loanwords from the point of view of phonetics and semantics, points out the mistakes in pronunciation in the novel, when Sorokin uses Chinese words or expressions. The analysis also focuses on the aesthetics of the word “Mei guo”, which by pronunciation in Chinese refers to the United States, and the word “Hei long jiang”– as one of the provinces in China, or the Amur River, flowing through the territory of three countries. Sorokin purposely changes their interpretation at the end of the novel to “beautiful country” and “Black Dragon River” in order to create the normal atmosphere of a dystopian society devoid of geopolitical boundaries. Sorokin introduces the word “dan huang”, which in the novel refers to the pro-China Russians and resembles the Chinese slangs “banana-man” and “egg-man” from the position of transcultural distribution. Moreover, in the course of the research, the author provides a comparison of Chinese loanwords with other foreign-language words used in the novel. By using Chinese loanwords as swear words, Sorokin literally commits linguistic violence. The final conclusion is that Chinese loanwords can be seen as a product of the overlap of cultures, which appear in the Russian-language fiction text. In addition, the Chinese loanwords with other Chinese elements give the novel a mystical oriental flavor and an absurd tone.

The introduction of the article substantiates the need for a qualitative study of the meanings of what is hidden behind this phrase; the relationship between the metaphor and the concept in its current interpretation, in understanding the problems of social elevator, is clarified.Purpose setting. The evolution of the idea of horizontal and vertical coordinates of social space is traced; the analogy between geometric and social spaces is investigated.Methods and methodology of the study. The article analyzes the features of the formation of methodological knowledge in the history of culture, clarifies the idea of measuring social space in the concept of P. A. Sorokin, shows that the use of Cartesian coordinate system allows Sorokin to offer a new philosophical view of social space. This view, in contrast to the classical relational or substantial ways of seeing space, offers vertical and horizontal slices of this space.Results. The article consistently presents answers to questions related to the history of the appearance of the phrase "social elevator" in science and everyday life; metaphorical and conceptual interpretations of the social elevator are revealed; the concept under study is applied to the actual reality of modern Russia on the example of one of the institutions of civil society (Autonomous Nonprofit Organization "Russia – the country of opportunities").Conclusions. For the first time, the status of geometry in the formation of methodological knowledge, in the development of P. A. Sorokin’s socio-philosophical ideas was consistently traced. The peculiarities of the work of social elevators are illustrated by the example of the analysis of such an institution of civil society in modern Russia as the ANO "Russia – the country of opportunities". It is proved that Sorokin’s socio-philosophical concept is an effective scientific basis for explaining the specifics of social mobility in modern realities.

Elemzésemben Sorokin disszociatív tézisére vonatkozóan általuk levont konklúzió elméleti pontosításának szükségességére kívánom felhívni a figyelmet. Jelen írás központi kérdése az, hogy vajon elképzelhető-e, hogy Hajduéknak igaza van abban, hogy a „mobilitásnak” nincsenek negatív pszichés, illetve kapcsolathálózati következményei, miközben Sorokin sem feltétlenül tévedett. Ebben a dolgozatban tehát nem a disszociatív tézisre vonatkozó empirikus eredmények mellett vagy ellen szólalok fel, hanem azokat az elméleti szempontból kulcsfontosságú elemeket emelem ki, amelyek mérlegelése elengedhetetlenül szükséges ahhoz, hogy valóban Sorokin tézisét tesztelhessük, s nem valami mást.

The purpose of the study is to analyze V. Sorokin’s conceptualist novel “Marina’s Thirtieth Love” (1984), to identify the features of its genre-structural constructions, to trace the connection of genre features of the “Soviet novel” with the tradition of Socialist realism literature and its deconstructions in the practice of conceptual art of the 1970s–80s. The paper identifies the target settings of the conceptual novelist Sorokin to overcome the principles and techniques of Soviet socialist realist art and to establish discrediting perspectives of perception of social and ideologically stable “concepts” that developed in the post-October period. It is established that the imitation base in Sorokin’s “Marina’s Thirtieth Love” was the so-called “production novel”, a thematic subspecies of prose of socialist realism.

The present multidisciplinary theoretical article develops its focal line of argument gradually. At first, feminist and narrative theory are consulted; after that, some treatments in the philosophy of mind are discussed. The latter’s correlative relationship with the recent “materialist turn” in philosophy affords to propose a tentative alternative to the current and universally accepted approaches to the (fictional) character much indebted to philosophical idealism. This latter observation also determines the broad – some might argue seemingly overtly complicated – theoretical reach of the article. However, its timely point of departure – the online misogynistic abuse in fan discussions directed at Breaking Bad’s Skyler White and the actress Anna Gunn –, enables to cast the issue of character engagement in necessarily broad terms, disciplinarily speaking. Be it in the context of different scientific disciplines or as the crucial vertebra connecting them, whilst also suggesting far-reaching philosophical implications. This kind of engagement, and especially its expression in online discourse, provides an impetus to inquire about the peculiarities of the human mind and the operation of human thought. Therefore, the present article zooms in on the conventionally understood binary relationship between “fiction” and “reality”, sketching appropriate terminology (continuance, narrative person, realitization) and theoretical framework (inspired, in part, by the Soviet school of philosophical Activity Theory) to help explain the human proclivity to treat characters in naïve realist terms, i.e., as real people. The central research question is as follows: what kind of ramifications can be detected for the conceptualization of character (and narrative) engagement from a particular kind of value-laden reception (like the forms of digital misogyny that emerged in the context of Breaking Bad’s reception)?
