The popularity of focus group interview has rapidly grown in the last two decades. After long-time period in which this technique had been practiced almost exclusively in marketing research it begins the period of its frequent application in a great number of academic fields (sociology, psychology, evaluation research, public opinion research, communication, medical care). Only with the intensification of investigations in which focus group interviewing has been applied it was enabled achieving of experience that can be methodologically generalized, with accompanying development of the technique. This text refers to the basic methodological principles of this technique's application. In the paper the methodological experiences are synthesized which are accumulated through an enormous number of foreign explorations, as well as in many-year research experience of the author.

Streszczenie:
Digital sociology is a computational social science that uses modern information systems and technologies, has already formed. But the conflict with traditional sociology and its research methods has not yet been resolved. This conflict can be overcome if we remember that there is a common goal – the knowledge of the phenomena and processes of social life, which is primary in relation to the methods to be agreed upon. Digital transformation of sociology is essential, since 1) traditional sociological methods do not solve the problem of providing voluminous, reliable empirical data qualitatively and in a short time; 2) the transition from contact research methods to unobtrusive ones is in demand. The adaptation of four modern information technologies-cloud computing, big data, the Internet of things and artificial intelligence – for the purposes of sociology provides a qualitative transition in the methodology of knowledge of the digital society. Cloud computing provide researchers with tools, big data – research materials, Internet of things technology aimed at collecting indicators (receiving signals) in large volume, in real time, as direct, not indirect evidence of human behavior. The development of “artificial intelligence” technology expands the possibility of receiving processed signals of the quality of the social system without building a preliminary hypothesis, in a short time and on a large volume of processed data. Digital transformation of sociology does not mean abandoning the use of traditional methods of sociological analysis, but it involves expanding the competence of a sociologist, which requires a revision of University curricula. At the same time, combining the functions of an expert on the subject (sociologist) and data analyst in one specialist is assessed as unpromising, it is proposed to combine their professional competencies in working on unified research projects.

The origins and content of the methodology of scientific research programs of I. Lakatos are considered taking into account the problems and tasks of the history of sociology. The reception of the methodology of research programs in sociology can be explained by the relevance of the analytical model of the structure and dynamics of the research program in the analysis of sociological knowledge. Within the framework of sociological knowledge, metatheoretical, theoretical and empirical structural levels are analytically distinguished. Certain structural analogies are observed: between the “hard core” and “negative heuristics” of the research program, on the one hand, and metatheory, on the other; between the “protective belt” and the “positive heuristic” of the research program, on the one hand, and theory, on the other; between the empirical content of the research program, on the one hand, and the empirical basis of sociology, on the other. One can observe a number of analogies in the dynamics of functional connections between the structural components of the research program, on the one hand, and the dynamics of functional connections between metatheorizing, theorizing, and empirical analysis in sociology, on the other.

The article summarizes the views on the current socio-political, cultural and economic situation in the context of sociological research in journalism. The study is aimed at analyzing the views of young people on what traditional religions they follow, the level of their religious knowledge and what they should do against the activities of non-traditional religious movements and religious extremist organizations and their destructive activities. The article, written using research methods such as pilot studies, rapid surveys, focus group interviews, uses the method of multistage random sampling of sociology in journalism. Quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection have been implemented. The methods were used to organize and use focus groups, store, process, compare statistics, use the results in media research, select new methods and queries. The effectiveness of sociological research, the choice of respondents, open and closed types, survey methods (questionnaires, content analysis, expert interviews, in-depth interviews, telephone interviews, etc.) are considered. The goals and objectives of content analysis in the media are also clearly formulated. Methods used were social media polls, selective placement by industry, and random polls. The problems of sociological research (organization, planning, recognition of social reality) in the work of the editorial board were not left aside.

Interdisciplinary research allows to receive versatile and more profound scientific knowledge about a complex natural phenomenon or an ambiguous event of social life by using approaches and methods of diverse branches of knowledge. The main condition of using these approaches and methods of diverse branches of knowledge in one and the same research is the generality of the object and the subject, the core purpose. For example, studying the motives of labor behavior we may combine approaches and methods of economy, sociology, psychology; studying the causes of agression we may use knowledge in biochemistry of primate brain along with the rest. In every single case the researcher builds a unique and original methodology of research. Quite often interdisciplinary research are made in adjacent fields of knowledge (economic theory, labor economy, management theory). Fields of knowledge that can be called interdisciplinary are based on interdisciplinary research. Regional economy is an interdisciplinary branch of science. Its structure includes knowledge of economy, sociology, geography, geology, etc. In this article the idea of amplification the interdisciplinary branch of science “Regional economy” by methods of marketing the territories is proved. This article describes the capabilities of methodology of studying art in the three interrelated scientific fields – sociology, culturology, and art history. Emphasis is placed on determination of the key criteria of comprehensive approach towards the analysis of art: each of the three scientific fields may have its own unique criteria for such analysis, but there also universal criteria that allow most fully assessing the essence and purpose of art, considering the general trends of its development in modern reality. The subject of this research is the methodology of comprehensive analysis of art using the instruments of sociology, culturology, and art history. The main conclusions are as follows: 1) disclosure of the content of the methodology of studying art; 2) determination of various criteria for comprehensive analysis of art within the framework of sociology, culturology, and art history; 3) demonstration of capabilities of using certain criteria in analyzing the essence of art and artworks; 4) focus on the social dimension of art, touching upon the heuristic value of the methods of applied sociological research; 5) characteristics of the capabilities of studying the symbolic nature of art in the context of culturology; 6) assessment of the development trends of the methodology of modern art history.

Empirical studies of sociology of management need adequate methodology particularly because the re-sults of these studies influence managerial decisions. The authors identify the relevant methodological principles and demonstrate their evolution from antiquity to the present. They note that methodological foundations can lead to invalidity of empirical data and to risk of erroneous decisions in case these foun-dations are used outside the worldview on the basis of which they were formed. The science about meth-ods, or methodology, has passed through three stages in its development since antiquity to the present day: metaphysical, dialectical, and tektological. These stages replaced each other, modifying and incorpo-rating into the subsequent ones. The authors justify that the methodology of sociology of management, based on the three-level model «fundamental methodology –middle level’s theory –empirical research»,began its full-fledged development starting from Hawthorne experiments.During these experiments the principles of the Taylorian concept of organization were first rethought critically, by E. Mayo. The au-thors note a tendency in contemporary research on sociology of management toward a focus on normative power and moral means of involvement. Many fundamental approaches in sociology of management are linked with the complex of ideas of Alexander Bogdanov’s tektology: contemporary methodology of so-ciology ofmanagement is based on the tektological principle of organization. The authors offer a model of sociological research on and improvement of management mechanisms in organizations that was de-veloped on the basis of practical consulting experience.

Sociology has attained a prominent status in the modern world, due to the role it played in the analysis of contemporary social issues and events. This has attracted an increasing interest in sociology not only in the Westerns societies, but also in the Muslim world due to their desire for modernization. Therefore, this article attempts to analyse whether sociology can attain its goal of reorganizing society, based on scientific methods. It also analyses ethics and morality as alternative means for the purpose, and as a source of derivation of universal rule of human social behaviour hence, reorganization of society. This research is theoretical and philosophical and uses a qualitative method as it relies on the analysis of the data gathered from textual sources. Using an analytical approach, the writers arrive at the conclusion that Sociology under its current scientific methodology, cannot achieve its goal of reorganizing society. This can be attributed to inadequacy of scientific method in the study of human society, due to the unpredictability of human behaviour and variety of its factors. The writers also suggest the adaptation of a dynamic multidimensional method that consider variety of factors such as spiritual, physical, mental, social, and moral which heavily influence human behaviour.

This paper outlines a version of ‘live sociology’ that enacts and engages with the openness and processuality of events. This is initially explored through a focus on everyday objects that, in their relationality, ‘misbehave’, potentially challenging standard sociological framings. Drawing on the work of Isabelle Stengers, it is suggested that such objects can be understood as ‘idiotic’ – possessed of an incommensurability that enables social scientists to ‘slow down’ and reflect upon ‘what is busily being done’ (not least by the social scientists themselves). This responsiveness to the idiot object is then contrasted to the proactive idiocy of Speculative Design. Here, artefacts – probes and prototypes – are designed to have oblique and ambiguous functions that allow both their users and designers to open up what is at stake in particular events. Examples taken from past and current research are used to illustrate how speculative designs can open up what ‘the neighbourhood’ and ‘energy demand reduction’ can be. The paper ends with a discussion of a possible ‘idiotic methodology’ and its implications for the conceptual and practical doings of social scientific research.

The article analyzes the problems of improving the effectiveness of applied sociological research. The scientific method that helps to ensure objectivity and consistency in the study of a social problem is considered. The directions, forms and prospects for the development and improvement of the effectiveness of applied sociology from a practical point of view are given.Intelligence research is the simplest type of applied sociological analysis. It solves problems that are very limited in their content, covers, as a rule, small study populations, and is based on a simplified program and concise methodological tools, which in applied sociology is understood as a package of documents specially developed for each study designed to collect primary sociological information, such as: an interview form, a mass or expert questionnaire, a card for recording the results of observation, studying documents; further: sampling projects, mathematical analysis of primary information, etc.A methodology for evaluating the social effectiveness of applied sociological research applied to any written results of scientific activity is proposed.

The article examines Russian sociology as a whole and in one particular Russian region (the Ural) through the lens of several scientific approaches. The situation in modern Russian sociology is described as a crisis, and the science itself is in need of a new revival. The Great Sociological Ural is considered as an object of research. The subject of research is the main scientific approaches towards studying sociology in the region. Of special interest is the interpretation of the generational approach, which is considered as a tool for analyzing sociology in the region. The purpose of the article is to present the resurgence process, the formation and development of sociology in the region as a subject of research in the mirror of a number of scientific approaches with an emphasis on generational analysis. The author’s theoretical framework is based on the concept of generations in B.Z. Doktorov’s sociology, including his “ladder of generations”. A generational stratification of the sociological community in the Ural is provided, including seven generations — from the moment of the resurgence of sociology in the Ural (during late 1950’s – 1960’s) up to the present day. A characteristic for each of them is provided. The author’s methodology and methods of empirical research are shown. The main methods used were in-depth interviews, the biographical method, as well as the document research method.

The methodology and structure of urban analysis for a detailed study of the characteristics of the urban environment are considered. A generalization was made and improvement of the structure and methodology of urban analysis was proposed, by using modern approaches and foreign experience. The work describes the study of the territory’s general structure. The outlined structure of the sectoral analysis is aimed at obtaining the most complete objective, scientifically based information about the investigated territory and allows to determine the entire complex of urban planning restrictions (sanitary and protective zones, noise and air pollution zones, flooding, landslides, nature and water protection restrictions, monument protection zones, historical areas, etc.), which affect the permissible urban transformations’ scale and character within the framework of the project being planned. The proposed urban analysis structure could become the basis for preliminary stage of urban planning while working on urban transformation projects. The work shows the possibilities for interdisciplinary research with the involvement of history, culture, sociology specialists at various stages. The generalization of the results of urban analysis consists of the existing degrading and potential development zones as well as conflict and problem areas identification, centers of gravity and prospects for various types of economic activity determination, and identification of territories’ reserves and project implementation resources detection. The improved methodology of urban analysis allows to identify problems that may arise during the implementation at the stage of pre-project studies, or can appear as a result of the urban transformations project’s implementation, and allows to determine the conflict points’ causes, potential opportunities for the development of territories and will be useful for the further search for solutions and resources for the project’s implementation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the causes and impact of predatory online publishing on Islamic economics and finance. Design/methodology/approach The method adopted involves a library literature scan to identify the origin and expansion of predatory publishing, as references listed in the paper show. The personal experience and observation of the author over the decades of teaching at various universities endorses the evidence. Findings The focus on “publish or perish” has led to division of Islamic scholars into conservative and modern economists, and it led to the overuse of mathematical and parametric modeling to the disadvantage of the discipline essentially imbued with unquantifiable ethical norms and values. Practical implications The study seeks to induce fruitful and purposive change in the research designs and direction of Islamic economics and finance. Originality/value This research initiates discussion on predatory publishing, an issue so far untouched in Islamic economics. It explores its impact on the discipline and suggests ways to curb the malady.

Streszczenie:
The ways in which values are assimilated to social research differ according to the theoretical frame of reference informing the research. An example from the writings of E. Digby Baltzell illustrates how a moral commitment shaped his assumptions about the nature of the social matrix and his research strategies. A Western moral rhetoric fares well if the researcher chooses a methodologically individualist framework. The framework assists a moral rhetoric by providing it with concrete rather than abstract social actors and with a basis for explanation in terms of motive rather than situational forces. Along the way moral statements can appear in the form of empirical generalizations and historical laws. Should sociologists deem ethically neutral social research desirable, this study suggests that concentration on scientific method, without exploring the value bases for selecting a frame of reference, is not a promising approach. A value analysis, especially around Weber's “value relevance,” may function propaedeuticly.

Streszczenie:
The unprecedented increase in the intensity of cross-border interactions in the modern world is emphasised, and the necessity of sociological monitoring of these processes is substantiated, the precondition of which is the creation of an appropriate methodology and methods. The stages of formation of theoretical sociology with particular attention to the genesis of cross-border interactions are considered. It is found that the main milestones in the formation of modern methodological principles of sociological analysis of this phenomenon are the post-classical stage of development of theoretical sociology (according to G. Zborovsky’s periodisation), the methodology of social constructivism, spatial turn and mobility in social development. The work of J. Urry’s sociology of mobility is considered, and its application to the Ukrainian realities is offered. Models of state regulation of cross-border mobility as one of the types of cross-border interactions, defined as the model of “gardener state” and “forest state”, are analysed. It is emphasised that these models had an explanatory power concerning the nation-states of the modern industrial era, but in the era of globalisation distort the understanding of central social processes and phenomena. The author analyzed the views of foreign and Ukrainian researchers on the methodological aspects of research on cross-border interactions. The systematic methodology of cross-border research, proposed by S. Ustych, is used and proposals for its improvement and implementation in research practices are formulated. The author’s position on methodological bases of sociological study of cross-border interactions as a differentiating and solidifying factor is offered.

Streszczenie:
Utopian theorists often speak about the merits of reading utopian fiction in order to reimagine and rebuild a better world, but dystopian fiction is often overlooked. This is, in my view, misguided because dystopian fiction, like utopian fiction, diagnoses issues with the present, inspires activism and resistance, and, in the twenty-first century, often presents ideas of how to effect positive change through collective activism. As speculative literary genres concerned with world-building, utopian and dystopian fiction have inherent sociological concerns. These texts can therefore be utilised by sociologists and other researchers beyond the arts and humanities. Speculative fiction is important to the field of surveillance studies not only because surveillance is a major theme in these literary texts but also because their formal properties provide us with the language, imagery, and feelings associated with being under surveillance. Twenty-first-century utopian and dystopian fiction has not been thoroughly examined by surveillance scholars. Analysis of utopian and dystopian fiction in this field has also focused on texts set in, and written by authors from, the global north. Considering the plethora of dystopian novels in and beyond the global north published in recent years that discuss surveillance, the neglect of the study of these texts to date is an oversight.

Abstract Research has the potential to be a powerful tool for the realisation of the rights of disabled people. However, antiquated research practices continue to marginalise disabled people by excluding them from research; inadequately remunerating them for participation in research; undertaking research that assumes difference; and not including their voice in the leadership design or implementation of research. This article builds on emancipatory, participatory and inclusive research methodologies to introduce a new human rights-based disability research methodology that presents a roadmap to overcome these problems and transform research into a means of rights realisation. It presents a protocol for the methodology that was created by the international Disability Human Rights Research Network. Finally, it explores many challenges that researchers may face when endeavouring to implement the methodology.

In writing this paper the author has consciously stood apart from his earlier works and attempted to dispassionately review his own position so that some degree of clarity of thought might emerge in the process. The paper is based on the author’s contribution between 1992 and 2012 to this subject and which has been used as the basis for several doctoral level investigations under the author’s guidance. They had played a major role in helping the author to crystallize his views. To these scholars, therefore, the author’s gratitude is unflinchingly extended. Management has been described as being concerned with and based on the science of decision making and operating from the foundations of the art of decision executing. Hence, research in the area of modern Human Resources Management, especially, is both interesting and challenging having its one foot planted in industrial sociology and industrial psychology while the other placed in supply chain management and organisational restructuring. Hence, the argument of this paper is more relevant to serious research scholars and to those management teachers who wish to pursue rigorous academic research. This is not meant for those in the cut-copy-paste league, which unfortunately is, of late, becoming quite prevalent within the Indian academia.

This article discusses indigenous methodology in the context of Tuvan studies. Tuvan studies have a rich history, with significant contributions by local Tuvan researchers as well as Russian and foreign scholars. This article presents an overview of this research before, during, and after the Soviet period. The paper examines possible strengths and weaknesses of both “insider” (indigenous) and “outsider” research, with the consideration that these opposing categories are not so easily delineated. Through case studies describing the work and insights of the renowned Tuvan researcher Valentina Suzukei and the cultural “thesaurus” approach of Lukov and Lukov (2008), the article assesses the potential of indigenous methodology in the field of Tuvan studies.

This article aims to achieve two main goals. Firstly, authors have tried to reconstruct the position of Vojin Milic (1922-1996) in the development of thought about (research) method. Therefore, they compared his standpoint with those developed one generation earlier (Znaniecki), those of his contemporaries (Good and Hatt), as well as with the work of present-day authors (Bryman). Special attention was paid to the importance of Milic?s study of the history of methodological thought and epistemology regarding the emergence of his ideas on data collecting methodology and procedures relevant for the analysis of causality. Secondly, along with this historical and scientific study, and guided by Merton?s critics of adumbrations, authors undertook a systematic examination of relationships between various research and analytical procedures within sociology: primary (original) experience, observation, sequential analysis, grounded theory, comparative method and multiple-case study.
