Pełny tekst źródłaThis doctoral dissertation explores the ramifications of a specific European research funding initiative, namely the European Research Council (ERC), within the broader context of the sociology of scientific professions, science, and public action. Focused on researchers in the realms of universe sciences and history within the academic landscape of French universities, this study systematically examines the transformative impact induced by the ERC's project-based funding paradigm on the dynamics of research. Scrutinizing alterations in the identities of researchers and the intricate fabric of both individual and collective scientific relationships, the thesis closely examines the distinct call for projects put forth by the ERC. By analyzing the selection processes leading to the identification of "excellent" individuals and projects, the investigation dissects the intricate interplay between institutional incentives for project submissions, national and international configurations of the university market, operational logics, and a diverse array of epistemic cultures. The socio-technical framework of the European Research Council (ERC) at the European level and the incentive policies at the national level are strategically devised to enhance the support for exploratory, individual, and "excellent" research endeavors. In this context, an inquiry arises: How do the recipients of ERC grants perceive their application process to the ERC and evaluate the success of their respective projects? The narrative meticulously traces the trajectories of laureates throughout the lifecycle of their projects. This involves a close scrutiny of the rationales underpinning their decision to seek ERC funding, the intricacies of candidacy construction, and an exploration of the identities of laureates tasked with orchestrating personalized collectives within the project mode. The dissertation culminates in a thorough analysis of the broader implications of ERC funding on the careers of scientists in the observed disciplines, as articulated by the interviewees
Renisio, Yann. "L'infortune des sciences sociales : sociologie d'une illégitimation scientifique récurrente". Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017EHES0073.
Pełny tekst źródłaCombining the sociology of science, of education and of professions, this thesis analyses the field of academic disciplines to present a series of social process contributing to the constant questionings regarding the scientificity of the social sciences in contemporary France. This three steps analysis (historical, statistical, and through surveys and interviews) unveils a phenomenon of cumulative disadvantages for these disciplines. Institutionalized in the Facultés of law and literature in a period of important rise to power of the scientific one, social sciences have been considered as “other” and “inferior” in terms of scientificity from the beginning, a situation that is strongly maintained today through the implicit hierarchies of fields taught in high school. At the crossroad of humanities, biological and mathematical sciences, the scientific practices of the social sciences are frequently evaluated and denigrated through the criteria of the physical sciences. Divided into two facultés, students and faculties in those fields have more heterogeneous social and educational backgrounds then those in other sciences, contributing to a social image of dissensus. Interiorizing their subordinated position, social scientists tend to justify the small share of resources that they receive through the valorization of specific temporal needs and unpredictability of their research

Pełny tekst źródłaThis dissertation studies research assessment in the Humanities and Social Sciences, in a French evaluation agency (AERES) created in 2007. Based on interviews, ethnographic observations and archives, it approaches the elaboration and the uses of evaluative instruments close to the actors who conceive and implement them. At the crossroad of public policy analysis, sociology of science and sociology of professions, I show that the definition of scientific “good practices” is manufactured through intra-professional alliances and conflicts, rather than it would reflect top down reforms imposed to the profession. Studying a routine activity in the academic world – the scientific assessment – in the critical moments when its rules are reshaped, allows apprehending the contemporary reforms that affect the scientific sector. If those reforms might erode the professional power, in the case I study, the scientists remain at the heart of the evaluative system. The AERES appears then as a microcosm where conflicts within the academic profession can be seized. The construction of the evaluative instruments is nourished by competing scientific knowledge, and those instruments might be abandoned when they become controversial in the profession. Hence, the position of the AERES with respect to the other academic institution has to be questioned, in order to understand under what conditions those instruments redefine the legitimate research and assessment practices

Pełny tekst źródłaWhat are the signs and causes of the “scientific career crisis”? how are they different or similar according to scientific disciplines, students’ social affiliations and national contexts? through a survey conducted among more than 2,500 high school and university students in france and in china, we used two threads – factors within the educational system and factors within the socio-economic environment – to consider the relationship between students from different social backgrounds and academic and professional careers in science. In both countries, having unequal socio-cultural resources according to their social background, young people do not benefit from the same opportunities to explore scientific careers. The objectives, contents, methods and status of science education have evolved in response, on one hand, to societies’ needs for scientific and technological development and on the other hand, to the need for selecting the best students, which reflects and strengthens the process of stratification and hierarchisation within and beyond the education system. The rigid demarcation between fields of study, the instrumental logic used for streaming, lack of career planning, ignorance of scientific professions as well as gender stereotypes are all factors that contribute to hindering young people from pursuing scientific studies. In this context, educational approaches such as the constructivism appear to continue being of particular importance
Grossi, Valentina. "L'image négociée. Une sociologie des professions du photojournalisme à l'ère numérique". Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEH136.
Pełny tekst źródłaMany observers argue that the professions revolving around photojournalism are facing a deep crisis in recent decades due to increased competition with image banks and amateurs. However, several organizations continue to handle the production of photojournalistic images in a specialized manner, championing the importance of maintaining what they refer to as a “professional” attitude towards these objects. How can some actors successfully claim the “license” to produce these artifacts and the possibility of autonomously defining their own “mandate”, while their monopoly over this activity is no longer taken for granted? A two-pronged inquiry, both historical and ethnographic, will provide an answer to this question. The ethnographic part of this research was carried out on three French editorial boards: the photo service of an international news agency, the editorial staff of the print edition of a national newspaper, and the web editorial team of a news magazine. This investigation showed that the strong division of labor in media companies is not at odds with the exercise of professional autonomy, understood as the ability, for actors, to implement complex assessments while reflecting on the very aims of their activity. The virtuosity of photojournalism professionals consists in bringing together heterogeneous constraints, which are not reducible to the simple logic of profit. These constraints are reinforced and updated through interactions between actors who compose the different professional segments and through the contacts they maintain with external groups (i.e. the sources and the public). Autonomy is therefore the result of a sui generis work organization that allows professionals to develop a specific morality in connection with that of neighboring groups as well as the “intelligence” of their activity. However, tendencies towards “deprofessionalization” are also noticeable: the actors’ autonomy is undermined when production systems tend to individualize work and, at the same time, to abolish complex judgment. This thesis thus aims to contribute to current discussions on the impact of digital technologies and new forms of work organization on professional autonomy

Pełny tekst źródłaIn France, the construction of employment law and its rapid increase of complexity, as well as the increase in demand for specialized legal services, lead lawyers to develop an expertise in this field. Law can be both a frame of reference and a ressource for companies. At the crossroads of the sociology of the legal professions and the sociology of law, this dissertation examines the practice of business lawyers who specialize in employment law and combine an advisory and litigation activity. We study the organization of law firms and show how lawyers collectively work to develop their professional practices and defend their clients’ interests. We first look at the professional contexts of lawyers and their professional socialization, which leads to common conceptions of their professional role and of employment law, oriented in their practice towards management. Secondly, we show how lawyers bring employer practices into line with legal standards. Lawyers’ interventions take place within the framework of a service relationship in which the lawyers have more or less authority depending on the duration and involvement of the two parties in the relationship and the legal resources available to the clients. Finally, we show how lawyers teach their clients to use employment law strategically. The empirical material that supports this reflection consists of interviews with lawyers in three bars. In addition, we conducted observations of meetings (face-to-face or by telephone) between lawyers and their clients in one law firm. Finally, we observed the meetings and conventions of two associations of lawyers who develop expertise in employment law for companies

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the first part, assigned to the history of the analysis of social mobility, are presented the first works of the beginning of the century, focused on the issues of social heredity and circulation of elites, the work of sorokin, the post-war works, characterized by the effect of the functionalist theory and statistical surveys carried on large samples, the rise of quantitative methods, like analysis of status attainmant or, later, comparisons with log-linear models. At this point, the author describes the crisis started fifteen years ago and the come-back of qualitative surveys and biographical analysis. In the second part, assigned to a survey carried on a generation of parisians, a statistical analysis is presented, involving a critical analysis of mobility tables and a research of a better description of occupational careers by making classifications. A new theoretical framework is discussed and fitted to biographical data rebuilt from life-stories of parisians
Aufort, Adrien. "Homo photographicus : sociogenèse du métier de photographe en France". Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024SORUL023.
Pełny tekst źródłaThis doctorate thesis aims to study the profession of photographer through the lens of sociology and history.A current portrait (2018-2023) of the professionals is drawn up by analyzing 30 interviews and 258 responses to an online questionnaire. Education, sociability, technique, aesthetic preferences and cultural habits are described in detail. In the manner of a replicability experiment, some of the results of this double survey reinforce the conclusions of previous work, particularly with regard to the socio-demographic determinants of entry into the profession. Others are more original, such as the influence of seniority on income, or the influence of geographical location on winning a prize. Professional success is also addressed and understood as the match between an ‘extended setup', a link between man and machine, and social representations. The latter are the fruit of the photographers' work, both on the photographic images they produce and on the self-image they cultivate. A historical correspondence (1910-1952) was also established by analyzing 778 issues of the magazine Le Photographe. From its beginnings as a corporate body to its legal, political and institutional achievements, the profession has a rich history. Understood as an individual and collective enterprise, the profession of photographer is seemingly in a constant state of crisis. It requires not only a constant negotiation with technological changes as they arise, but also with other users of the photographic medium

Pełny tekst źródłaOur research intends to study the gap between pre-established social status given to any social actor and the practice of it, affected by this very status and the one they claim. Through his practice, any actor may choose to correspond to this pre-established identity or one as ather way round to get as far as possible from it. The advantage of consider profesional book-sellers is this occupation suggests immediately a desire to claim the distinction between book-selling vendors and profesional book-sellers in the established category of book-selling retailers. Consequently, working as a profesional book-seller is not considered there just as an occupation, but mainly as a social path varied profesional identifications. The evolution of book selling through several social or economical systems from the old regim up to the 19e siecle makes clear the basic caracteristics of the present profesional book-sellers status. Their progressive coming to specialized trading explains why institutions and sociologicts have not been interesed in studying the field. It is yet possible to establish a difference socialogicaly based, between bookselling vendors an professional book-sellers. Only the latters are being able to prove a "savoir-faire" increating an old stock and advising costumers. To consider the attachment to profesional group as being result of a claimed profestional identity, opends a wide range of investigation concerning profesional choces and practice. The way the profesional practice develops depends on the inherited identity, the constrained identity as well as aimed identiy, three builtvariables. It is possible to understand selling practice of profesional book sellers only if we consider this commercial activity as an interaction between the professional book-seller and his actual customers in space and time at the very moment of selling
Rached, Elie. "Argumentation socioscientifique : rôle des connaissances scientifiques et techniques?" Thesis, Cachan, Ecole normale supérieure, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015DENS0028/document.
Pełny tekst źródłaThe work presented in this thesis has two objectives: on the one hand, the development of a teaching-learning sequence of a socio-scientific issue, dedicated to argumentation and integrated to a traditional French Curriculum; and on the other, the examination of the argumentation and knowledge use (e.g. conceptual scientific knowledge and technical knowledge) and the possible link between them, when high school students in grade 11scientific curriculum (16-17 years old) choose, in the classroom, a heating system for a residence, in the context of debates on climate change. The design of a contextualized teaching-learning environment (or ecology) and means to support this environment is based on two frameworks: the « Experimental Design-based Research », a general framework for conducting research in Science education and the “Modèle d’une écologie d’une controverse socioscientifique » a specific model for the education of socio-scientific controversies. The analysis of argumentation and knowledge use (e.g. conceptual scientific knowledge and technical) is organized around the study of the structure (e.g. mobilization of rebuttals or elaborated arguments (qualifiers mobilization (s) with at least five bases)) and content (e.g. abstraction areas, themes, sources and validity) of the argument, the artifact constructed. The results indicate mobilization by students of quality arguments (rebuttals and elaborated arguments) and content of high abstraction areas, but both remain rare. Students also mobilize conceptual scientific contents and technical one throughout the sequence. However, these contents whether scientific topics, technical or mother, may be of low, medium or high abstraction areas; and drawn from handouts, prescribed curriculum or other sources. A link is established between the mobilization of rebuttals (only encountered during students ‘group discussions and during all class debate) and the mobilization of valid content with at least partial explanation. However, no link is established between the elaborated arguments mobilized during groups presentation and during the pre-test and post-test, and the content, whether scientific, technical or other; wrong or valid; with areas of low abstraction, medium or high; and drawn from handouts, prescribed curriculum or from other sources. A discussion of results is done. In addition, , a retrospective analysis of our results in light of our frames of reference, and of our research objectives, leads us among other things, to propose adjustments to the elaborated methodology and teaching-learning sequence

Pełny tekst źródłaScience museums were long considered the preserve of the well-to-do of societies past, elitist places where science was the only consideration. Today, there is a broader range of museum stakeholders and their institutions are subject to complex and previously unknown social, economic and environmental pressures. Some science museums have recently included sustainable development in their new missions, but not without generating some controversy. For sustainable development, unlike the environment, is no longer just a concept to be explained to visitors through exhibitions ; it is also a new system of management. This kind of change challenges established commercial, environmental, cultural, scientific and social paradigms, and alters the very identity of science museums. The goal of this research project, then, is to answer the question: What are the challenges and issues involved for science museums that opt for sustainable development? The goals of the project are to understand the mechanisms governing the operation of science museums, to engage in a critical discussion on the consequences of the shift toward sustainable development and to determine the methodological contribution of organisational sociology for museology
Collas, Thomas. "La pâte et le décor : considération et formes professionnelles dans le monde des pâtissiers". Thesis, Paris, Institut d'études politiques, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015IEPP0029.
Pełny tekst źródłaThe thesis describes the heterogenous world of pâtissiers – in terms of products and work situations – in France from the late 1970’s to the early 2010’s in the light of a sociological question : to what extent do marks of consideration sent to workers and to their work contribute to stabilize professional forms, be it professional groups, professional segments (elitarian or not) or individual trajectories ? The three parts of the thesis are based on empirical research, interweaving archive and ethnographic materials. An original prosopographical database is exploited through sequence analysis. The first part of the thesis presents an analysis of competing jurisdictional claims describing a group of pâtissiers and explicitly aesthetic choices that these claims reveal. In a second part, three arenas of definition of pâtissier work (pâtissier competitions, an elitarian association and critics) are compared with regard to rhetorics of excellence they convey and the elitarian segments they contribute to stabilize. The third part looks at individual trajectories that are partly built on these marks of consideration. In so doing, the cumulative advantage models are discussed. The thesis shows that entrepreneurship and decoration skills are recurrent principles of consideration of pâtissier work

Pełny tekst źródłaFocused on the sociological analysis of professions and on people involved in continuing education in France, this research combines two perspectives : one tends to recapitulate some of the actions which ponctuate the social construction of professions ; the second, through an analysis of the ocial trajectory of the agents based on a statistical survey of social mobility, tends to point out some of the social attributes of the agents of professional training and to propose a social caracterisation of this population. The theoretical framework is inspired by anglo-american sociology of professions and by interactionnist or constructionist criticism, but also by the Pierre Bourdieu's problematic, his conceptual system, and his hypothesis on "new professions"

Pełny tekst źródłaPsychotropic drugs are often looked at threw two opposite prisms: as a liberating "panacea" on the one hand, and as a restrictive "chemical straitjacket" on the other. This cleavage also characterizes the representation of psychiatrists’ prescribing activities, as psychotropic drug specialists. The pharmacological issue is particularly structuring in the psychiatric field, especially as it is increasingly central in the activity of psychiatric hospitals. Exploring the issue of drug prescription is therefore necessary in order to understand contemporary public psychiatry. At the border between science studies and the sociology of health, work and professions, this thesis aims to shed light on psychiatric prescription methods, and in particular to understand which disorder ant patient classification processes govern substance choices. The core of this research is based on the following paradox: psychiatry as a profession is publicly legitimized by an image based on its expertise and the innovative power of its drug treatments. Why, then, seems psychotropic drug prescription so under-valued by some of its members? Based on interviews of representatives of the profession, a website indexing of the main segments of psychiatry and a comparative ethnographic survey of two public institutions, this thesis addresses the issue of drug prescription from the most macro-sociological scale to the finest level of analysis - from prescribing as a professional valorization tool to prescriptions during psychiatrist-patient sessions

Pełny tekst źródłaIn this dissertation, we consider how scientific and political discourses and genre are constructed in the work of Pierre Bourdieu. We mainly focus on major actors like Sociologue and Sociologie and the way they are semantically constructed. We also analyze specific concepts (champ, espace social, etc. ). It allows us to apprehend the most significant changes and stabilities according to several variables like discourses (scientific vs political), genres (article vs intervention), authors (Bourdieu vs classics and contemporary French sociologists) and time (40 years of textual production). Our findings show the consequences of such semantical constructions and their rhetorical impact on scientific dialogue (mainly based on restriction and exclusion) and finally, on the meaning of being a committed sociologist

Pełny tekst źródłaThe clinical investigation of work concerning the activities of researchers reveals suffering linked to the rivalries, to the relationships of domination, to the subjective commitment necessary for the use of the practical intelligence; and the negation of this subjective one. The relation between conformity and originality is addressed by the work of objectification and the thesis of a subjectivity conformed by this work. The scientific practice is approached by the models of the sociology of sciences, themselves discussed from a study case based on an investigation by the method of psychodynamic of work in a scientific institution. From a double discussion, with the sociology of science and the psychodynamic of work, the strategic activity seems to be a large part of the researchers’ one. They are exposed to a suffering that leads them to adopt some objectivistic defenses. The incidences of the evaluation methods on the evolution of researcher’s activity, on the modalities of recognition and on the creativity are analyzed by considering the issue of the health. So we consider the researcher as a collective entity, in a collective unit and with his organization of work

Pełny tekst źródłaComic book artist remains one of the least known professions, both to the general public and to public authorities as well as to researchers in social sciences. In recent years, however, comic book artists have attempted to be heard in the French public arena, in order to make the authorities recognize the problems that they consider to be a burden on their activity: economic precariousness, suffering at work, sexism, lack of social recognition, inadequate legal and fiscal status. Some of them have committed themselves to transform their professional community into a professional group, with the hope of making their various interlocutors recognize the specificity and autonomy of this group. In the meantime, many comic book artists remain skeptical, if not reticent, about the idea of a collective organization and regulation of their activity. The first ambition of this thesis was to lift the veil on the daily life of this profession and on a reality that usually remains in the shadows. By entering the workplace of artists, by attending their daily exchanges and by following them in conventions, it was possible to understand the conditions and logic of their work. The second ambition of this thesis will have been to understand why the profession of comic book artist remains so poorly known and recognized. For this purpose, I followed several collectives of artists, which are trying to give their profession a form of unity and visibility. These analyses led me to defend the idea that the difficulties of comic book artists, in building collective claims and giving a political existence to their professional group, are mainly due to the way in which their activity was organized. In other words, in order to understand the limits encountered by certain critical processes within a profession, we must return to the structure of work relations to observe the type of relationships and norms that it favors (or, on the contrary, makes more difficult). This analysis grid can be applied over the long term: such retrospection allows us to understand the persistent difficulty of constituting politically the profession of comic book artist since its early formation. It also helps us to identify the moments in its history when this political constitution began its development and thus, to better understand the conditions that would be necessary today for it to fully take place

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis is a disciplinary study of French IR. It challenges a set of historiographic conventions that rationalize the marginal status in which French IR is stuck at present. By relegating these conventions as shared beliefs, this study intends to renew the way the current situation of French IR should be understood. The results of the investigation implicate the purely French label « Sociology of international relations » since it has been unable to represent a French school of thought and to establish a scientific conversation as successfully as the English school did.It sheds a critical light on the role of the precursor of the French Sociology of international relations Raymond Aron. Given the facts that he embodied an autonomous study of IR which has well spread in France for some time and the rejection he is subjected to nowadays, R. Aron symbolizes the very scientific issues that are at stake when considering the contemporary French Sociology of international relations. Thus, the main controversial points emphasize the latter’s intellectual premises regarding theory, the distinction between internal, foreign and international objects, and the multidisciplinary conception of the study of IR

Pełny tekst źródłaAdopting an analytical perspective on the intersection between sociology of art and sociology of professions, our research examines the participation of a group of French contemporary art gatekeepers in building the career of Turkish artists. In particular we studied the experiences and working practices of three categories of contemporary art gatekeepers: museum directors / curators, directors of galleries and artistic director in the nonprofit sector. Focusing our attention to both the structure of the artistic field where these actors operate, and their professional practices, our goal was to emphasize the importance of the role of French gatekeepers in the process of consecration Turkish artists internationally. In the first part of our research we analyze the historical background of the relationship between the French artistic intermediaries and Turkish artists. In the second part, and heart of our research, we present the results of our empirical study on the professional activities of a French group of gatekeepers operating in the field of contemporary art. They have been or are involved in the promotion and dissemination of works of Turkish artists operating in the field of visual art. Indeed, through a field survey, we show the diversity and contradictions of working practices of thirty-two French contemporary art gatekeepers around a topic: the artistic exchanges between France et Turkey in the globalization era

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis focuses on the evolution of the relationship between Japanese daily press reporters and the newspaper companies for which they work. At the crossroad of the interactionist sociology of professions, sociology of journalism and economic sociology, this work is mainly built on fieldwork conducted within the newsroom of one national newspaper, the Asahi Shimbun, the second biggest newspaper in the world regarding circulation and readership. Journalism in Japan is structured around one central element: the company. Large companies train their employees, protect reporters from labor competition by integrating them in their internal market, and by controlling access to the main news sources. In turn, they expect from their reporters a strong commitment in work and the acceptance of the appropriation of their work by the company. All those items constitute the organizational logic of Japanese journalism. The first aim of the thesis is to describe the main features of this model, while showing how some elements related to an occupational logic subsist. A second aim is to analyze the impact of two movements. Specific to the newspaper industry, the first one is related to the evolution of the readership and the editorial policies established by newspaper companies confronted to this evolution. The second, which is more generally related to the world of work in Japan, refers to the transformation of the role played by the company in society. Observations conducted within the newsroom of this newspaper company during three years, qualitative interviews and a statistical analysis has allowed us to examine the careers and the division of labor, and to see what concrete evolutions are related to the weakening of the organizational logic

It is focused on scientist hypotheses which + problematic ;, offer of service and system of measurement and classification will have put into form this issue and contributed to turn it into a current social issue. Since 1970, the reform of management concerning old people has led to a change of the competition system between the different pole of the management market. The low medical care finds expression in a debasement of + long sejour ; (nursing home). The dependence scales set up by geriatricians is the answer to a management logic and to a remedicalization (medical care or cure). Some epidemiological hypotheses have revealed the problem of old people at home have problem and in this way have universalized it. They take part to make the state discover that the family contributes to old people's support. These programs defending interest of home care or nursing home are based on different labels until cristallization of stakes by putting this issue on the political scene. These hypotheses use then the label + dependence ; in order to assure the programm's success. The law of 24/1/97 is dedicaced to one of these models. The geriatrician scale is an implement of fixing price and allowing benefits and it carries a management and market logic with. It shows the rationalization of the management market. This scale legitimated by scientist is a way to solve moral conflicts around the devolution of old people charge. It normalizes in this way relations to old people

Pełny tekst źródłaIn the wake of Marcel Mauss's studies this thesis focuses on the part played by gift within the field of modern therapeutics compared with traditional medicine. On the one hand it shows our caregivers'vocation takes its roots within the framework of horizontal gift (relationship with others), vertical gift (relationship with ascendants) and diagonal gift (relationship with transcendency); on the other hand it studies how the gift provided by caregivers is actually therapeutic in itself, insofar as the disease results from a hitch in the social fabric, the constant movement between gift and counter-gift, good deeds and bad deeds

Pełny tekst źródłaThe Office and the Telescope: A historical Sociology of French Astronomy, 1900-1940. This dissertation studies the establishment of French astronomy between 1900 and 1940. The two first parts analyze the process by which a socio-institutional field of state observatories emerged in the French system of higher education under the Third Republic. The study identifies a specific way of doing astronomy, which is characterized by the development of a scientific-bureaucratic regime and a process of nationalization. The third part deals with the transformation of the field in the Interwar Period. The last part of the dissertation examines the simultaneous development of amateur astronomy conceived as a “duplication” of professional astronomy. In doing so, this dissertation aims to contribute to the historical sociology of science

Pełny tekst źródłaThe program of this research is to specify the nature and the intensity of the relations that link sociological activities and the different social mechanisms constituting the context of these particular cognitive activities. The purpose of this thesis is, therefore, to define the efficient social context of the sociological activities. For this general problem, we elaborate two operational questions in order to delineate some empirical investigation main lines. In the first part of this work, our underlying question is the following: is there a relation between the institutional contexts of the sociological production, kinds of sociological products generated in these contexts and their epistemological grounds? We recourse here to a comparative analysis between ORSTOM and CNRS. Though it explains the contrast of the types of sociology elaborated in the two scientific establishments, this relatively institutionalist analysis fails to understand the intellectual trajectories diversity of the searchers embedded in each of the two scientific production spaces. That's the reason the analysis focuses, in the second part of the text, on a restricted CNRS searchers population in order to circumscribe the socio-cognitive factors of their intellectual mobility

Pełny tekst źródłaOver the past few years, caretakers in the social housing sector have increasingly been considered as a cure to the " urban crisis " in " problem neighbourhoods ". The following analysis aims at showing how these grass-roots people, at the bottom of the prestige ladder, manage to build a satisfactory image of themselves from a number of resources of recognition and identity. Among them are to be found not only the identities set up and circulated by the Council Housing Association as an institution, but also their past, made up of representations of the caretaker of yesteryear, the various social worlds typical of their daily social scene - tenants, " office " staff, policemen, postmen -, the physical and material environment - the built-up environment, public areas, entrance halls - and finally each individual's own experiences. In other words, the institutional dimension of their identities fits into historical, material, social and personal dimensions

Pełny tekst źródłaAnimal welfare is the name of a tension between the production of norms and the production of knowledge. Through the study of the interactions between science, politics and factory farming, this dissertation sheds light on the concrete operators of non-human exploitation, conceptualized as a power system (dispositif). To write the history of battery cages from the early 20th century to the 1980s, I go through a wide range of unpublished archives, hubs between science and its world (institutional archives, technical reports, scientific publications, masscirculation newspapers, legal texts, patents, industrial regulations). I describe the constitution of animal welfare disciplines, i.e. their history, the elements and relationships that make them up, and the rules that govern them. I question the distinction between norm, knowledge and commodities production : they work together as operators of animal exploitation, but could possibly act as counterweights against it

Pełny tekst źródłaThe mobility of chefs and cooks is one of the reasons of globalization of French gastronomy. The internationalization of French culinary schools enhances such a process, because they facilitate the institutionalization of the professional of the culinary arts. This thesis is based on a qualitative study Taiwanese students who came to France to learn the French cuisine. Based on interviews conducted in France, Taiwan and China with the various actors in the sector of catering, I find out the processes transmission of knowledge and the know-how of French gastronomy by a geographical analysis at different scales (global, regional and local). I also study the evolution of culinary profession in Taiwan. After these students came back to Taiwan, because of the creation of their own restaurants or pastries, they became the important actors in importing the knowledge and the techniques. On the other hand, they do not contribute to the transformation of the food consumption, but also to the hybridization of French gastronomy through the adaptation of the local eating habits. These Taiwanese actors are not only recipients of French gastronomy, in the sense that they play the role on dissemination of Western/French gastronomy to China. M, study shows thus that Taiwanese are mediators in transferring Western food in East Asia

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis views sports agents as actors evolving in a dynamic, complex and multi-dimensional work environment. Profession, occupation and work, these three terms, although often used interchangeably yet, remain amphibological given their extreme polysemy. The object of this research arises in light of that ambivalence as a study of an atypical profession with an uncompleted status, teetering between regulation and autonomy. The first section of the study aims to help specify and clarify the terminology being used. In doing so, using the literature from the sociology of professions, it provides a starting point for a suitable theoretical framework that could be applied to the profession of sports agent or to the (sports) agency practice, as a whole. The occupational model of sports agent is framed in such a way that the professional self-regulation is restricted by Sports governing Bodies and State regulatory interventions. Therefore we propose to re-examine the organization and regulation of the sports agents’ activities. The findings indicate significant differences between the regulations applicable to sports agents. The inefficiency of the current regulations whether they are enacted by national sports federations, international sports federation or by the State is closely related to the internal professional dynamics that these regulations disturb. The thesis examines therefore the tasks of sports agents, the individuals that carry them out, and the variable and inconstant connections that tie one to the other. In this respect, as a means of a more accurate conceptualization of its object of analysis, this research describes sports agents’ activities quantitatively and qualitatively, exploring various dimensions and aspects such as the foundations of the profession, the social role of sports agents, the different typologies of sports agents and the occupational tasks accomplished by each. It also highlights the international scope of sports agents’ activities

Pełny tekst źródłaIntermediate organisations working for donors and receiving financial donations for beneficiaries of humanitarian help have been gradually adapted to biopower mechanisms of government. Guidelines, standards and objectives are now fully part of a profession willing to gain efficiency but not profit. Humanitarian action is more and more divided between organisations but also between workers in order to ensure this goal. One organisation and some of its local partners have been observed from Lyon, Beijing and Bamako. This NGO has been analyzed with its financial partners and implementing partners as all are integrated into an ecology of professions. This approach is essential to link together situations, contexts and globalization processes at work. This PhD explores the institutionalization of a particular mode of governance more and more based on individual emotions of workers and their "beneficiaries." Indeed, they are essential to foster negotiations within this division of labour. Therefore, humanitarian government is now part of a capitalism of emotions deployed across external borders of different countries and internal borders between the private and professional

Pełny tekst źródłaUntil recently, the lawyer played a secondary part on the penal scene of the minors. Since the 1990’s, this actor undertook to invest this scene by creating associations of defence specialized in the minors in order to improve this practice judged of poor quality. To gain a professional legitimacy, these lawyers undertook to renovate the system of officially appointed lawyers for the minors, to organize on duty lawyers near the juvenile courts and to give free legal consultations for the minors. Especially, they posed the obligation of the follow-up of a specialized training on which rests some claims of specialization. Lastly, the defence of the minors being hardly defined, these lawyers have room for manoeuvre to develop their role, oscillating between an educational defence focused on the educational interest of the minor and a technical defence focused on the avoidance of the sanction

Pełny tekst źródłaBased on an empirical study of how academics did or did not adopt new practices after the reform of doctoral school in France, my PhD thesis studies how a top-down organizational reform can change practices among autonomous professionals. New practices are effectively adopted only when they make sense relatively to extant professional identities. The latter do not evolve in response to a precise steering by the reformers, but to new problems definition by the professionals, leading to new ways of doing. Consequently, a radical change of practice implying an evolution of identity cannot be steered from top-down, but only supported by the organizational structure. Regular contacts between professional groups and with other stakeholders (users, citizens, funders) create a favorable context for such a change. My thesis discusses the possible scope of action for reformers in professional public organizations and the levers of change they might rely on

Pełny tekst źródłaThis thesis aims to demonstrate the influence of scientific and technical development on the civil liability, studying how this development constitutes a factor of mutation of this. To demonstrate the significance of this phenomenon, throughout our work we have observed that it is possible to link novelty to material well-being, but also to the risks and uncertainties of the unknown. The distinction between risk and uncertainty is marked by the development of science as to the scientific demonstration of the contingencies that can be attributed to each point of development. Done this reasoning, the law of torts is imbued with legal innovations that deal with risks and uncertainties, but also the anxieties and fears generated by scientific and technological change. This has provoked precise changes which go in hand with the rejection of the man of today to tolerate that any technical manifestation may injure him. These changes take us from a double perspective: In relation to the role of civil liability, and in relation to its implementation. Through this problem, we demonstrate that the unknown understood in innovation is the source of a process of impregnation of novelty in the fundamental bases of civil liability; in particular, with to the observation the new sources of injury, new injury items, and new approximations to the causal link

Pełny tekst źródłaStudying the role of lawyers in European public policies, this thesis highlights their multitask role in EU policies. Thus, it intends to tackle two issues: on the one hand, the impact of supranational institutions on the national systems of professions and on the other hand, how a group of professionals seize these institutions. Using methods from history, political science and sociology of law, relying on various sources (archives, interviews, a data base), this research highlights the role of lawyers, as actors of European integration. This thesis retraces the genesis of the regulatory lawyer, in a coproduction process with the building of the Regulatory State. This process is presented as the result of coalitions of various actors. Using judicialization as a way to extend their jurisdiction, these lawyers appear to be hybrid professionals, at the crossroad of law and politics, the public and the private sector, the national and the transnational levels

Pełny tekst źródłaFor about two decades, the number of people claiming to suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity or electromagnetic hypersensitivity has been steadily increasing in France.T hese persons experience various and sometimes quite disabling somatic symptoms, which they attribute to exposure either to chemicals or to anthropogenic electromagnetic fields. The definition, and even the existence of these diseases are controversial. They are not legally recognized and their victims resort to self-diagnosis. However, this is not a cognitively easy task. Its implications are also far-reaching: it results in a radical change in their views of themselves, their environment and their community, as well as significant alterations in their daily lives and behaviour. It is thus an interesting phenomenon to explain for a cognitive sociology concerned with how mental representations evolve and influence conduct. Such is the purpose of this thesis. The analysis relies mostly on ethnographic materials and is conducted in a comprehensive and ecological perspective. It falls into three stages. The first one is devoted to an exploration of the controversies aroused by environmental sensitivities, so as to clarify their lack of legitimacy. The second one deals with the subjective experience and biographical trajectories of environmentally sensitive persons. The last one tries to explain the appearance and persistence of their conviction that they are hypersensitive with a utilitarian model in which emotions play a prominent role. To conclude, a comparison is outlined with other epidemics of medically unexplained symptoms

Pełny tekst źródłaThe present work is structured by two main perspectives: the French-German comparison and the construction of the professional identity of national daily press journalists. The construction of professional identity is analyzed taking into account the conjunction of interactions between the journalist as individual, the organization in which he is employed, the professional group to which he belongs and his social environment, with consideration of the cultural background of each country in which these interactions take place. Before conducting this analysis on a basis of approximately thirty semi-structured interviews that have been conducted with print and online journalists, we first took a closer look on the approaches developed by researchers in France and Germany. In order to limit the object of this research, the comparison has been restricted to the following specializations: politics, society and culture. The coexistence of the print edition and the newspaper’s website defies the professional identity of journalists and has an impact on the self-perception and the perception of each other of print and online journalists. In this context, differences between print and online journalists appear which lead to transnational similarities between the journalists of each support (print or web), even if all journalists are united by common references linked to ancient ideals of the journalists’ profession.Despite these strong similarities, the construction of the professional identity is influenced by the national context: especially the impact of the differences in each country’s administration can be observed on different levels, for example in the structure of the media landscape and the news organizations and their departments as well as in the journalists’ training and their professional mobility

Pełny tekst źródłaHow does a professional group build up along an activity such as security, which appears to be most difficult to objectivize? Parti examines the history of the professional group between 1945 and 1995. It shows how, at the RATP, the legal environment organises the division of security labour while letting room for incertainty. It brings to light concomitant developments between some factors on the one hand (insecurity phenomena, company politicies and national security politicies) and, on the other hand, the joint definition of the function and structure of security at the RATP. Part II studies how, between 1945 and 1988, the group has been building up along an invisible activity (since security agents are in plain-clothes), while analysing security activities and their meaning for agents, we show how, within the company itself, the whole group has come to form a trade as such, through a training process allowing the share of knowledge and skills among peers, and how it has shaped their identity within the organisational and professional system to which they belong. Part III presents the wilful construction of a professional grade within the organisation and of an "institutionalized trade" defined outside the firm (1989-1995). We observe the creation of a new group, now in uniform, which represents a security function then defined as strategic for the firm. A phase of innovation gives place to a phase when a professional grade as such is being established within the firm. Both groups join into a common entity and new rules are set up to redefine the groups positioning. At the same time, principles of recognition, which are external to the firm (diploma), are being established. Eventually, the previous principles of recognition of both groups do not easily match with the new institutional recognition of this professional grade and of this trade
