Raj, Yogesh. Making Sense of Lynching in Medieval Nepal. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252040801.003.0005.

Streszczenie:
Focusing on medieval Nepal, in this chapter Yogesh Raj argues that existing sociohistorical accounts of lynching and other extreme forms of collective cruelty are inadequate for developing “a credible historical account” due to what he considers their “narratological bias.” Raj asserts that the problematic nature of the Event Catalogues, the main methodological innovation in these accounts composed by scholars of European rioting and American lynching, “call for a radically different approach to historiography.” Using Newari medieval records of lynching, Raj argues for “employing analogy, and not argumentation, to develop a deeper historical understanding of lynching in Nepal and across societies.”

Streszczenie:
Chapter abstract This chapter argues that Bourdieu’s sociology of the state outlines an interesting research program, which focuses on innovation and transformation rather than only domination and reproduction. The chapter begins by presenting some of the epistemological and conceptual elements found in Bourdieu’s sociology of the state. The chapter then goes on to focus on his often overlooked sociohistorical approach to state formation, which involves a research program that emphasizes structural tensions that encourage transformation, specific actors that drive these transformations, and concrete inventions that created the state as a new social phenomenon. As such, the chapter aims not only to present Bourdieu’s sociology of the state, but also to argue that his sociology is much more dynamic, processual, and focused on transformation than is usually assumed in presentations of Bourdieu.

Olson, Kenneth S., i M. Paul Lewis. The Ethnologue and L2 Mapping. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190657543.003.0003.

Streszczenie:
The early focus of the Ethnologue was on L1 use and is reflected in the maps that are included with each new edition. Typically, the maps show locations and boundaries corresponding to the distribution of L1 speakers. The location of widespread, second, or additional languages (such as national languages, lingua francas, and languages of wider communication) is only occasionally represented by maps, using a variety of methods. Major factors affecting this effort are related to language identification (ISO 639-3), categorization (status: sociohistorical, official recognition, vitality), and analytical and research methods (lexical similarity, intelligibility, bilingual proficiency). This chapter examines the Ethnologue’s approach in all of these areas. Currently, significant effort is being made to structure the Ethnologue database to provide expanded data on the ecological setting of each language. This should significantly increase capacity for mapping the use of widespread L2s. A sample map showing the use of Lingala/Bangala is provided.
