Friends African Mission (FAM) set forth an education department to train corps of African teachers- evangelists. The pioneer teacher-evangelists formed the basis of a new Luhyia elite that helped transform Luhyia society. And as education became more relevant in the emerging colonial structure, African Christians began to demand for more schools, learning in English and higher education, at a pace that neither the government nor the missionaries could match. Consequently, African Christians began thinking of establishing government and missionary supported independent schools. The case of the proposed Mbale School and the successive establishment of Chavakali day secondary school illustrate this point. The influence of the Chavakali experiment on secondary education in Kenya was deep and lasting, because it revealed what local self-help could achieve.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Introduction Many European schools implement smoke-free school policies (SFSPs). SFSPs may decrease adolescent smoking by causing adolescents to perceive stronger antismoking norms, yet there exists no quantitative evidence that indicates for which norms and for whom such effects may occur. This study therefore assessed to what extent adolescents’ perceived antismoking norms among best friends, teachers, and society at large were associated with SFSPs, and whether these associations were moderated by adolescents’ level of school connectedness. Aims and Methods Survey data were collected in 2016/2017 on 10,653 adolescents aged 14–16 years old and 315 staff members in 55 schools from seven European cities. Associations of adolescent-perceived SFSPs and staff-reported SFSPs with best friend, teacher, and societal antismoking norms were estimated in multilevel logistic regression models, adjusted for demographics and school-level smoking prevalence. We tested for interaction between school connectedness and SFSPs. Results Adolescent-perceived SFSPs were positively associated with antismoking norms by teachers (odds ratio [OR]: 1.46, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.15–1.85), were negatively associated with antismoking norms by best friends (OR: 0.81, 95% CI: 0.67–0.99), but were not significantly associated with antismoking norms by society at large (OR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.74–1.02). All interaction tests between adolescent-perceived SFSPs and school connectedness were nonsignificant. Staff-reported SFSPs were not associated with any norm and showed no significant interaction with school connectedness. Conclusions We found that SFSPs are associated with adolescents’ perception of more antismoking norms by teachers, but less antismoking norms by best friends, irrespective of adolescents’ level of school connectedness. Implications Smoke-free school policies, just as many other tobacco control policies, are assumed to foster adolescents’ perception of antismoking norms. Still, current evidence does not demonstrate which antismoking norms may be influenced by SFSPs and whether this influence is equal for adolescents with different levels of school connectedness. This study suggests that SFSPs foster adolescents’ perception of antismoking norms by teachers, but may concurrently lead to the perception of less antismoking norms by best friends, irrespective of adolescents’ school connectedness. SFSPs may therefore need to be complemented with interventions that target antismoking norms in adolescent peer groups.

This article deals with the activities of such a cultural and educational public organization of Ukraine as the Radio Friends Society. Attention is drawn to the fact that the society was surprisingly successful in reaching a wide audience of Soviet people through radio broadcasting, thus ensuring the fulfillment of one of the tasks of the regime of the USSR and the USSR — the education of a new type of person with a Marxist-Bolshevik worldview. The purpose of the study is to determine the main directions of activity of the Society of Friends of Radio and, on this basis, to outline the ways in which it played an important role in issues related to the organization of radio broadcasting and radio broadcasting in Ukraine in the early 1930s of the 20th century. Among such directions is the deployment of organizational and mass work around radio broadcasting, namely: organization of radio listeners' gatherings, assistance in the organization of high-quality broadcasts, their collective listening and discussion, participation in the organization of local and grassroots broadcasting. Regarding the ways of organizing radio broadcasting and radio broadcasting, the author defined the following: the use of permanent purposeful and systematic political pressure and strict control over all aspects of the activities of the Society of Friends of Radio; constant emphasis on the shortcomings of the work, even the smallest ones, drawing people's attention to it; constant expansion of members of the radio community from different categories of the population, including conscripts, students of technical schools, and high school students; transferring the solution of the material and technical support of radio broadcasting to the shoulders of the radio community; etc.

Islamic Boarding School education, in general, has not shown satisfactory results, based on stakeholder expectations. The existing Islamic Boarding School education system still requires serious studies to move towards better improvements. Reform of Islamic education, especially Islamic boarding schools, is an urgent demand because generations are faced with various multidimensional challenges of life. The role of pesantren as a means of education and socialization has its own meaning for its students as a place to seek knowledge and experience as well as a place to make friends and interact socially. During the period of study and socialization, students will meet a group of friends with very different personalities and habits. Therefore, the integration of multicultural values ??in Islamic boarding school learning can be an alternative model of multicultural education in society. Because the essence of multicultural education is not to implement the nomenclature of multicultural learning, but to realize the internalization of these multicultural values ??in people's lives constructed by pesantren. This research study aims to describe the reform of Islamic boarding schools and multicultural education. This type of research is library research, focusing on discussing literature in the form of books, journals, papers, and other writings, with a qualitative approach. In addition, the author also uses an interpretation method in order to achieve a correct understanding of Islamic boarding schools and multicultural education.

K-POP culture is not native to Indonesia but comes from Korea. This study aims to determine the impact of K-Pop culture on the behavior of school children from the teacher's point of view. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. Meanwhile, respondents were selected by using a purposive technique, namely setting a sample with various considerations. This study chose teachers as respondents. The results showed the spread of K-pop culture through social media such as Facebook and Instagram and the world of digitalization such as Tik-Tok. Friends also influence the spread of K-pop because other friends will follow the behavior of their friends. Then, K-pop culture has the potential to erode local culture such as angklung and jaipongan in Sundanese society because generations of school children can prefer K-pop culture. This condition is influenced by the role of parents. When parents are literate in Sundanese local culture and make that culture into life behavior, the children at home will follow the example. Likewise in schools, when schools instill local culture, school children will participate in that culture. Simultaneously, the community environment supports local culture, so there will be filtration of culture from abroad. But it is not wrong to learn about other cultures. K-pop also generates economic value because salons as a place to change hairstyles will sell well, and Korean-style fashion will also sell and grow Korean food and beverage cuisine

A home school is the one a student with severe intellectual disabilities would attend if he or she were not disabled. A clustered school is a regular school attended by an unnaturally large proportion of students with intellectual disabilities, but it is not the one any or most would attend if they were not labeled disabled. Students who have severe intellectual disabilities should attend home schools so that (a) all children can be prepared to function in a pluralistic society; (b) the most meaningful and individually appropriate instructional environments and activities can be used; (c) parents, guardians, brothers, and sisters can have reasonable access to schools and services; and (d) a wide range of social relationships with students and others who are not disabled can be developed, maintained, and enhanced over long periods of time. The individualized educational program (IEP) of each student should include individually determined kinds and amounts of instruction in chronological age-appropriate regular education classrooms; on school grounds, but not in regular education classrooms; and in a wide variety of integrated nonschool environments that will actually be used during nonschool hours and days. Individually determined kinds and amounts of direct therapy and other needed services also must be provided from a home school base. Once a student with intellectual disabilities attends a home school, the next major issue becomes whether the student should be based in a regular education or in a special education classroom.

The development of intimate same- and other-sex friendships in Arab children and adolescents in Israel was investigated in relation to their perceived parenting styles. It was hypothesized that girls would show higher levels of intimacy than boys, and that cross-sex intimacy in both groups would increase with age, whereas same-sex intimate friendship maintains rather stable over the school years. We hypothesized further that intimate friendship would be contingent more readily on perceived parental authoritative style rather than on either permissive or authoritarian styles. Participants were 723 Arab students drawn from four schools, and from the 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th grades. The Parental Authority Questionnaire and Intimate Friendship Scale were employed as measures. Findings indicated that girls were more intimate with their female friends than boys were with their male friends, especially in the higher grades, replicating previous studies. However, boys tended to score higher than girls on intimacy with the other gender. Girls equaled their level of intimacy only at the 11th grade. These findings suggest that traditional societies may foster specific characteristics of intimate friendship. A novel finding is the central role of the authoritative parenting style in determining intimate friendships. Results are discussed in terms of universal aspects of friendship and of their expression in the investigated cultural setting.

Issues such as bullying, gender-neutral spaces, and diversity are also discussed. In addition, Wendy emphasizes the key role education plays in the inclusion of transgender children: "If we can start from a place of education, and explain that there is a really wide kind of variety of different ways that people can be born, that’s going to help society and people in general understand that transgender people are in the world."

Sabah society is well-known for its open-mindedness and high level of tolerance. Cross-religious and cross-cultural ethnic interactions occur in harmony without any issues likely to trigger societal unease including within the settings of educational institutions. The objective of this study was to provide evidence for this assertion through a quantitative examination of the perceptions of teachers on the aspect of cross-religious and cross-cultural ethnic interaction among students. Respondents in the study comprised 77 teachers from several secondary schools in the district of Kota Kinabalu. Analysis of the questionnaire indicated that from the teachers’ perspective, cross-religious and cross-cultural ethnic interaction among students was actually positive and encouraging. In these interactions, students were respectful of each other, willing and happy to work together in any school programme, not hesitant to ask for help from friends of other religions and culture, at ease interacting and discussing academic matters together, and ready to learn new things from their friends of different religious and cultural backgrounds. This scenario is an important cornerstone to the multi-racial societal harmony in Sabah which needs to be emphasised to ensure its continuity in Sabah society specifically and in Malaysia in general.

The teacher has an influence on the learner’s choice for geography. Unique Contribution to Theory, Policy and Practice: Geography subject is relevant in understanding the major problems that face the society today. The subject also contributes in better understanding of the environment. Geography should be made compulsory among all the secondary school students because its importance in attaining a clean environment and sustainable development cannot be underestimated. The teacher should relate the problems faced in the society to the content that is being taught so that learners can have a real life experience on the aspects that they learn in class. This will boost the subject’s importance in understanding the various problems faced in the society.

Communication is without any doubt one of the traits that best defines the human species since the beginning of time. Without communication, the development and evolution of society to the current paradigms would not have been possible. Even though the human capacity to use more than one language has always existed, two events have been decisive in shaping the processes to teach and learn second languages: on the one hand, the consolidation and institutionalisation of Applied Linguistics as an independent science in the 20th century and, on the other, the establishment of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) at the beginning of the 21st century. Subsequently, the methodologies for teaching second languages underwent significant change, adopting communicative approaches geared at understanding and making oneself understood. In consequence, students’ learning styles were also modified. Moreover, the reasons for learning a second language have become more diversified and specialised, depending on personal and social needs. In consequence, the models for teaching and learning foreign languages have transformed formal, non-formal and informal education, exerting their influence in a wide variety of environments, such as schools, high schools, universities, academies, social networks, cinema, television and gatherings of friends, amongst others.

Sexual harassment exists throughout the world. According to various studies, approximately 15 million adolescent girls worldwide have experienced forced sexual intercourse or other sexual acts at some point in their life. Out of these, 9 million adolescent girls were victimized within the past year. Based on data from 30 countries, only one per cent ever sought professional help (UN Women, 2018). Despite of the severity of the problem, it has not yet received the attention it should. The lack of researches in these areas is also one of the major reasons for the failure of effective measures to tackle these problems. Sexual harassment is not well received as sexual abuse or rape or sexual violence because it doesn’t produce as severe consequence as the latter ones do. This article based on the research on schools of Godawari Muncipality ward No.3 of Lalitpur district and followed by exploratory research design. For quantitative information, interview schedule was used. Only 50 adolescent students both boys and girls were selected for the respondents. The findings show that almost all the respondents have known the types and forms of sexual harassment. Almost all of the respondents have felt harassed once in their lifetime. Girls are the easiest target for harassment. Mostly, perpetrators are mainly stranger and held in public places but some respondent share being harassed by their own relatives and known person like school teachers, friends. Male victims were less like to report cases as they feel humiliation in this male-dominated society. Most of the females also find not reporting cases as they fear of questioned by society of their characters. It is very important to aware from sexual harassment from young age and strict laws should be implemented regarding the sexual harassment.

Even with economic and educational resources in the home, well-off African American youth are not achieving at the levels of their white peers. Why is this? A review of relevant literature identifies a set of social processes that pose formidable barriers to the academic and personal development of middle-class African American youth, the closing of the black-white achievement gap, and the preservation of African American family advantage across generations. Constituting a social ecology of African American family life, these processes emanate outward from the immediate home environment, through peers and friends, into neighborhoods and schools, and to society at large.

Introduction Japan has experienced a shift toward a multicultural society, and an increasing number of immigrant children have enrolled in its educational systems. Unforeseen experiences may affect the mental well-being of these children and undermine their holistic development; however, research is scarce. This article explores parents’ concern on Nepalese children's experiences in Japanese schools. We aim to reveal the issues that may inform healthcare professionals and schools in best supporting immigrant students. Methods Qualitative survey methods were adopted in an online survey tool to access and collect data from 13 Nepalese parents whose children (age 6–18 years) attended the schools (elementary or junior high school) in four prefectures of Japan. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Results The following four themes were identified: (i) interaction and relationship; (ii) feeling different and meals at school; (iii) academic exclusion—lack of assistance/review at home; and (iv) emotional distress, peer exclusion, and bullying. Conclusion Our findings suggest that because of the linguistic and cultural differences, children had difficulty communicating, leading to poor interpersonal relationships. Subjects reported changes in daily living patterns at home and school, and children felt different, shy, and unable to make friends or get involved. There were problems with school meals as well, and parents expressed concern over a lack of academic assistance. Some noteworthy emotional aspects were inability to be happy at school and bullying or exclusion from peers. They did, however, express the impression that Japanese students and teachers are cooperative. Overall, these findings have implications for schoolteachers, nurses, health personnel, parents, and others who promote the mental well-being and holistic development of children. This study provides a basis for mental health educational programs targeting the relationship between migrant and native students to create an inclusive society for all.

A longitudinal survey was conducted amongst 2300 pupils of secondary confessional schools in the Netherlands. Their religious background, activities and opinions are described and trends therein are searched for. There is a further decline in religious belonging towards traditional religious frameworks. Pupils find inspiration amongst family and friends, in music, sports and nature. Their values are not changing much over time, so still ‘being free and independent’, ‘enjoying life’ and ‘being happy with oneself’ as well as ‘being a good human being’ and ‘adding towards a just society’ is valued. When searching for their own words for existential issues their language is found. In the future this language might add to the open dialogues in the classroom. By doing so, a new way has to be found on which religious education and youth ministry can be based.

Child-centeredness is the foundation of Tao Xingzhi’s educational philosophy and the fundamental principle and practical logic for collaborative parenting in the new era among schools, families, and society. Ways to truly implement this concept and provide a conducive holistic developmental environment for children’s comprehensive growth is an urgent issue to explore. This paper analyzes the essence and value of Tao Xingzhi’s concept of a child-centeredness approach, emphasizing the responsibilities and roles that schools, families, and society should undertake in promoting the practical application of this concept. It discusses how, through measures such as constructing child development communities, creating avenues for child participation, and fostering child-friendly environments, can effective transform the child-centered concept into action in the collaborative practice of school, home, and community in nurturing children, thereby promoting the full play of children’s subjectivity. The study finds that only through concerted efforts of schools, families, and society, together with respecting children’s will, addressing their needs, and safeguarding their rights, can a favorable environment for children’s development be created, and the concept of child-centeredness truly emphasized. This paper can provide theoretical guidance and practical pathways for promoting the practice of child-centeredness in collaboration among schools, families, and society.

Abstract Americans, on average, can anticipate living 85 years or perhaps 100 if born in this millennium. This extension of the lifespan has introduced a new stage of human development presenting unfamiliar challenges to policy makers, health care providers, employers, religious institutions, families, individuals, and schools. Education about longevity should begin in adolescence (ages 10-20) with the merger of science, experiences of older generations, and imagination of youth. Content of this online course focuses on the years after adolescence: early adulthood, middle age, retirement, and old age. After reading each of the 16 lessons, cooperative learning teams conduct structured interviews with older relatives, friends or neighbors who are further along in life's journey. All the lessons are augmented by 'what do you think? tasks used to motivate discussions, structure interviews, decide on reasoning and problem-solving scenarios, identify key concepts to apply, group lesson reviews, and self-evaluation for comparison with peers. If society wants to encourage adolescents to appreciate their national and ethnic heritage, benefit from learning how older generations see situations and interpret current events, and acknowledge the common need for maturity and spiritual development, then older people should become resources for education about longevity.

By early 1863, Harriet Jacobs had long mastered reading people. Even before she could extend a hand to the stone-faced Julia Wilbur, she caught a flash of resentment in Wilbur's eyes. Jacobs decided against a handshake. “Miss Wilbur, I am Harriet Jacobs. Do you remember me?” she asked. Wilbur did remember Jacobs. In fact, Wilbur had not taken her eyes off of the immaculately but modestly dressed African American woman from the moment Jacobs stepped into the converted barracks that now served as a school for freedwomen and girls. Wilbur first met Jacobs in 1849 in Rochester, New York, when Wilbur was a teacher and the secretary of the Rochester Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society. Then, Jacobs was a self-emancipated, former slave operating an antislavery reading room in the city. Yet, on this unseasonably warm evening of January 14, 1863, in a converted barracks in the District of Columbia, the wheels of fortune had indeed turned. Wilbur made no effort to hide her anger as Jacobs explained that the New York Friends had decided to make Jacobs head matron of the freedwomen's school—the school Wilbur had opened and run almost single-handedly for three months.

What people eat has become a highly political issue, closely intertwined with public health, environmental concerns, and climate change. Individuals’ consumption decisions tend to be greatly influenced by the people that surround them, and this seems to be especially true when it comes to food. In recent years, alongside close contacts, such as family and friends, a myriad of social influencers have appeared on the screens, sharing opinions on what (not) to eat. Presenting results from a youth survey conducted in Sweden in 2019 (N = 443), this paper shows that social media have become the primary source of information about food and eating for youths, followed by schools and families. However, primary sources of influence continue to be parents and the family at large. Furthermore, the study shows that it is possible to identify ‘central persons’, i.e., relatively clear-cut groups of people whose food choices—measured as tendency to eat climate friendly—is mirrored by the youths, both in their everyday food preferences and in their broader political awareness as expressed through political consumerism. A conclusion from this is that certain people can be particularly successful at inspiring larger numbers of other people to engage with healthier and environmentally friendlier (food) consumption in a society.

This article is motivated by the concern of the phenomenon of religious-based intolerance and radicalism in Indonesia. Perpetrators of these attitudes and behaviors occur in many educational settings by educated individuals. There have been cases where radicalism happens because schools are developing religious education, which is exclusive and not open to pluralism in society. Therefore, this article develops ideas/thoughts about schools and Catholic Religious Education (CRE) relevant in the context of pluralism in Indonesia to prevent religious intolerance and radicalism. Schools can be pluralism-friendly homes by making them a positive space for diversity and a place for humanist dialogical education. In Indonesian pluralism, Catholic Religious Education helps students know their religious faith and get to know other religions, have a dialogue with the truths of other religions, and even learn from other religions. PAK in the Indonesian context must contribute to building the personality and attitude of students who are inclusive, dialogical, humanist, and fair. CRE should not be used as an apologetic tool for the sake of defending the truth of Catholicism narrowly and exclusively. Through CRE, students are helped to become individuals and Indonesians who are tolerant, fair, and dignified

When friends are in the company of bad friends, especially in senior high schools, they are pressured to use drugs. On our television and radio stations, there is a "naked" advertisement for alcohol, cigarettes, and other non-medicated substances, these are dangerous medications that are being promoted as effective performance enhancers. These drugs are even advertised to the public as a laxative, and the most aggravating part is that locations, where they may be purchased in big numbers, are advertised. The availability of drugs to society's youth and society is both a cause of cancer. Today's youth are inquisitive. They want to see if whatever they see and hear is effective. This insatiable curiosity can sometimes be dangerous, even lethal. Some people become addicted to drugs as a result of their curiosity. The author of this paper intends to look into the causes, effects, and control of this problem, as well as the social and cultural aspects of drug usage.

Streszczenie:
As the first case of COVID-19 was detected in Wuhan, China, the Novel Coronavirus pandemic has rapidly swept the world. As COVID-19 proliferated in the United States, the longstanding negative stereotypes of Asian Americans in society were revealed, and xenophobia among whites and non-Asian Americans was activated. During the pandemic, microaggression, negative bias, and violent crime significantly increased all Asian ethnic groups, especially in big cities and the northeastern United States. During this time, most literature focuses on the racial discrimination and mental health of Chinese/Asian college students. However, scant research explores Chinese/Asian high-school students in America, whose total number has risen dramatically in recent years. Therefore, this paper uses the snowball sampling method to conduct in-depth semi-structured interviews with 7 Asian high school students in the United States and tracked them for around one year, from September 2021 to October 2022. The purpose is to expose their real campus life and true racial discrimination feelings under COVID-19. The study found that Chinese high-school students seldom suffer from severe racism on campus. This is because private international schools in northeastern America are susceptible to racism. Their schools have strict anti-racial discrimination policies, severe punishment measures, and open channels for complaints to protect their students from racism. However, when Chinese high-school students are off campus, they are more likely to suffer intense hate incidents like weapon threats. Even though interviewees do not recognize that they or their friends have encountered extremely severe anti-Asian hate incidents, we should keep in mind that schools may control the public voice about racism on campus in order to keep their reputation and ranking, and therefore those serious events are not exposed to us.

This has affected children with physical, emotional and psychological effects. For this reason, it is pointed out that families should be aware of children to detect the symptoms of these disorders and prevent them from going to more.

The COVID-19 pandemic has evolved into a severe psychosocial crisis affecting patients, their relatives, friends, and healthcare professionals. In Italy, public health residents (PHRs) remain essential to the national response to the pandemic. To assess their mental sphere, the “Public Mental Health” working group of the medical residents’ Assembly of the Italian Society of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine has designed the Public Health Residents’ Anonymous Survey in Italy (PHRASI). This is a nation-wide cross-sectional study based on an 88-item self-administered voluntary survey that evaluates how sociodemographic variables are associated with mental issues, including wellness, eating disorders, sleeplessness, alcohol misuse, depression, and anxiety. Data will be gathered by disseminating a Google Forms link across the Assembly network of medical residents. All PHRs enrolled in a four-year program in one of the Italian postgraduate schools of public health will be qualified as participants. PHRASI aims to draw a comprehensive and detailed picture of the mental health state of Italian PHRs. PHRs are a significant group of healthcare professionals that may serve as a future benchmark for developing and enacting regulations intended to support the mental health of healthcare professionals.

Streszczenie:
The main aim of this study was to find out the vulnerable places of sexual harassment to the girl students and the persons involved in such unwanted behaviors. It was a mixed-methods study. Altogether 773 girl respondents were selected for obtaining quantitative data from Lalitpur and Rupendehi districts in Nepal. Similarly, 10 focus group discussions, 14 Key informant interviews, and eight In-depth interviews were conducted for collecting qualitative data. The result showed that male peers/ friends, teachers, neighbors/ relatives, and strangers were involved in sexual harassment. Frequency of verbal/gestural type of sexual harassment is higher from male peers and touching/pinching and sexual abuse/assault types of sexual harassment are more common from teachers and relatives. Sexual harassment frequently happens in public transport. In society, teachers deserve great respect and trust from parents and students. They have close access to girl students. However, such trust and closeness transformed into sexual harassment whereby accelerating sexual harassment. The higher incidence of sexual harassment at public transports might be due to the proximity and anonymity, which, in turn, results in high levels of sexual harassment and abuse with very little risk of social or legal consequences. The awareness program against sexual harassment and strong laws and order are essential and the judiciary process should be simple and victim-friendly that can reduce sexual harassment to girl students by various perpetrators at different domains in society.
