In this study, radical socialist articles written on feminism, the feminist movement and the woman question published between 1987 and 1994 in Turkey are examined. The study attempts at describing, classifying and analyzing the Turkish socialist discourse manifested in response to the emergence of feminism in Turkey. It is argued that the Turkish socialists&rsquo
approaches to feminism and the feminists do not differ much, nor a change in their approaches with time can be observed. It is also argued that the theoretical content of the radical socialist articles is usually futile and far from being comprehensive.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The purpose of the socialist states' participation in world trade systems was to expand trade with Western countries by elimination of discriminatory treatment imposed by the West. Although China is an original member of GATT, the new government had not been able to participate in GATT activities and had been kept away from the multilateral trade system ever since its inception. It had been subject to the constraints of a special Western trade control policy, which facilitated the formation of the highly centralized economic system in China. There are six socialist member states in GATT. They are Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, Romania, Hungary and Cuba. Since 1980 China has been considering the pros and cons of GATT membership. Although China is an original member of GATT, the new government of the PRC has not participated in GATT activities for thirty years. By seeking GATT membership, China hopes to eliminate various kinds of discriminatory quantitative restrictions, to enjoy the MFN treatment of GATT to play a major role in world trade, to learn how to do business in multilateral trade system and to protect its interest through GATT systems. China's position towards GATT membership is resumption, not accession. It wants to become a member on the basis of tariff concession and to enjoy GSP treatment. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Streszczenie:
This thesis is essentially about the theory of the transition to socialism and aims at comprehending the Soviet experience of attempting to re-mould the relations of production and the forces of production mainly at the level of Soviet labour processes. The main finding is that the Soviet Union was rich in debate in the 20s but short in actually pioneering new labour processes in the years of construction and accelerated industrialization. As a by-product of this larger project, the thesis has begun to demarcate the division of labour from technology by constructing models on the basis of their shared characteristics of efficiency, output, cost, control and welfare. It is argued- that an attempt to 'abolish' the fragmentation of tasks arising from the technical . division of labour would require a redirection of the physical organization of technology itself. The thesis emphasizes the importance not only the re-arranging of macro-societal-level social relations but also micro production unit level changes. The socialist project ought to include simultaneous interventions at the micro and macro levels of reality. It is suggested that despotic control at both the society and production-unit levels would hardly expand the emancipatory possibilities for labour. Nor democratization at one or the other level alone whilst keeping despotic control will do. Only simultaneous democratizations at the enterprise and society levels will make the socialist development attractive. The thesis concludes by stressing the need to reinstate democracy in relation to the organization of the labour process pointing out the responsibility of the Gorbachov leadership in relation to the democratization of Soviet society and enterprises.

Batori, Anna. "Enclosed spatial formations : space and place in the socialist and post-socialist Romanian and Hungarian cinema". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2017. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/7890/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The thesis proposes a comparative textual research on Hungarian and Romanian cinema by setting up a model that informs the implicit cinematic reflection on socialism in film. By establishing two aesthetic categories – horizontal and vertical enclosure –, the thesis argues that the spatial structure of the narratives reveals and alludes to the oppressive policy of the Hungarian and Romanian socialist regimes. The first part of the research scrutinises the space in Romanian cinema, and investigates the birth of the vertical enclosure. The analysis focuses on the spatial representation of Bucharest, that is the claustrophobic illustration of the urban landscape and its space depicted by the tools of notorious surveillance on screen. As argued in the thesis, the architectural forms and their film representations build up a spatial constellation identical to Bentham’s Panopticon discussed by Michel Foucault. The second part of the investigation concentrates on Hungarian cinema and the evolution of horizontal enclosure in film. Through textual analysis of the selected films that are set on the Great Hungarian Plain, the thesis discusses the allegorical use of space during and after socialism. Therefore, while concentrating on the circularity of the location and the mise-en-scène of the films – that refer to the isolation and indefiniteness of space – the author argues that the directors recall the parabolic language of the cinematic corpus of the socialist epoch. As concluded by the work, the contemporary art cinema of Romania and Hungary both reference socialism by using space as the main device for the implicit textual reflections. In this way, horizontal and vertical enclosure also emphasise the revival of the forms of the socialist aesthetics.

Wesser, Grit. "Kinship, state, and ritual : Jugendweihe : a secular coming-of-age ritual in socialist and post-socialist Eastern Germany". Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/25669.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis uses the secular coming-of-age ritual, Jugendweihe (‘youth consecration’), as a locus for exploring the ways kinship and politics in Germany are complexly intertwined. Although Jugendweihe emerged in the mid-19th century as a substitute for ecclesiastical coming-of-age rituals, and was adopted by various movements, it is closely associated with the former GDR (German Democratic Republic/East Germany). Under the GDR, young people aged thirteen to fourteen prepared for their Jugendweihe ceremony in ten ‘youth lessons’, which aimed to craft ‘socialist personalities’. Between 1955 and 1989 more than seven million adolescents pledged allegiance to the GDR state during the public ceremony, which was followed by a family celebration. With the demise of state socialism in 1989-90, western observers and the Churches assumed the ritual would vanish, but Jugendweihe continues to be celebrated in contemporary eastern Germany – without a pledge of allegiance. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between November 2012 and January 2014 in Thuringia, this thesis investigates the changed social relations between individuals, families, and the state in eastern Germany after the political caesura of 1989-90. It explores the ritual’s abiding relevance within a different socio-political context, and considers how the ritual’s metamorphosis is mediated both through the local Jugendweihe Association and the grandparental and parental generations. The research examines what values grandparents and parents, who were socialised under the GDR, seek to transmit to their offspring born after the GDR state’s demise. It demonstrates the continued (and changing) salience of connections between kinship, ritual, and politics in contemporary Germany.

Whittle, Maria Karen. "Subverting Socialist Realism: Vasily Grossman's Marginal Heroes". Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/pomona_theses/70.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
Soviet writer Vasilii Grossman has been renowned in the West as a dissident author of Life and Fate, which multiple sources, including The New York Times have called "arguably the greatest Russian novel of the 20th century." Grossman, however, was not a dissident, but an official state writer attempting to publish for a Soviet audience. Grossman's work was criticized by Soviets as being "too Jewish", while Jewish scholars have called it "not Jewish enough." And, despite his modern critical acclaim, little scholarship on Grossman exists. In my thesis, I explore these paradoxes. I argue that Grossman attempts to reinterpret traditional state ideas of Sovietness into a more inclusive, democratic version by creating heroes from traditionally marginalized groups. To do this, he reinterprets and inverts traditional tropes of the Socialist Realist genre. Genric limitations on his worldview, however, prevent this vision from being completely realized in the course of his work. I trace Grossman's work from his early short fiction to his Khruschev era novels and show how this trope develops during his career as a Soviet writer and citizen.

Campbell, Janet M. "Is there a case for socialist jurisprudence?" Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1997. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4247/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The field of socialist law generally has incorporated two paradigms of study. The first focuses on the former Soviet Union, China and other "communist" nations and analyses how legal systems have developed in these nations and why they differ from Western ones. The second rejects the classification of the former U.S.S.R. (China, etc.) as representatives of the socialism envisioned by Marx and Engels and concentrates on a Marxist exploration of legal phenomena in capitalism. The first approach ignores he divergence between the socialism expatiated upon by Marx and the socialism which was (and is) functioning in these nations; the second disregards the problem of a regulatory system in post-capitalist society. Arguments that do address the regulatory problem in socialism often call for a re-definition of law (usually rights-based) which embodies socialist principles. Such a demand, however, is in conflict with Marx's original position (one that was expanded by E.B. Pashukanis) that law become unnecessary in such a society. The purpose of this thesis is to construct theoretically a regulatory system based on the writings of a selection of Marxist legal theorists (Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stuchka, Reisner and Pashukanis), ascertain whether such a system might be considered law, and determine whether or not there is a legitimate claim for a "socialist jurisprudence". Both theoretical constructs and historical examples are used during the course of discussion. In addressing the lacuna in the two paradigms of this field, the results of the thesis indicate that there is a viable alternative to law which does not ignore the regulatory needs of society and is compatible with the Marxist critique of the legal order.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This dissertation examines documentary cinema in Socialist China as an emerging technology of mass politics, a new medium for creating political imaginaries and writing history, and a global vernacular connecting China to other revolutionary and modernizing cultures. At the center of my investigation is documentary cinema's capacities to work across boundaries between reality and fiction, between physical and metaphysical worlds, and between a historical world bound by its materiality and a revolutionary world mobilized to take leaps into a brighter future. I argue that these capacities made documentary a particularly relevant media for socialism for both epistemological and historiographical reasons. Epistemologically, documentary brought together the empirical and the ideological, both fundamental to a Marxist quest for truth. Historiographically, documentary's deep bond to the present moment and its capacity for temporal re-structuring and mass mobilization allowed it to intervene radically into the making and writing of history, particularly in a society engaged with engineering its own transformation. Using visual archives only recently made available, the dissertation's wide-ranging discussions include how documentary re-enacted the civil war upon the founding of the PRC, documented "tomorrow" during the Great Leap Forward, created mass passions for diplomacy in the 1960s, and enabled a poetics of mourning and testimony in the immediate years after the Cultural Revolution.

Bottrill, Graham. "British socialist literature : from Chartism to Marxism". Thesis, Cardiff University, 2006. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55629/.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is a selected narrative sequence, focusing upon social/political narratives published between 1870 and 1888 in order to connect the literature of Chartism, published in the 1840s and 1850s, with the naturalistic political novels of Margaret Harkness published between 1888 and 1921. The thesis was initially conceived during graduate study undertaken at the University of California in 1981-3. The foundations were fully laid by research undertaken independently during 1989 and 1990, while teaching in New York. Here, the truly inspiring facilities of the New York Public Library made it all real. The complications of returning to England in 1991 and the pressures of earning a living in a non-academic environment resulted in the study being left for many years, though not forgotten. I owe the completion of the thesis to its reception by the School of English, Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University in 2003, and to the rigorous and detailed support from my adviser, Professor Stephen Knight. I would also like to extend my thanks to the facilities of the School of English, Communication and Philosophy for supplying me with prints of rare microfilmed documents, available only from the British Library. Working on such a thesis as a part-time student in addition to full-time and largely unrelated work eats significantly into personal time. I therefore thank my partner, Ruth Hecht, for her support and positive encouragement throughout its composition. Finally, I would like to remember my family, the Bottrills, who lived for many generations between Coventry and Leicester, the men as farm labourers or coal miners in rural pits, the women in domestic service. They lived and worked throughout the period covered by this thesis, and to them ultimately it is dedicated.

Cameron, Marcel Alexander. "Statist utopianism and the Cuban socialist transition". Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/12538.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis argues that the nature of ‘idealism’ or ‘utopianism’ in Cuba’s post-1959 socialist transition and the peculiarity of Cuban state socialism have been inadequately conceptualised in the literature. It hypothesises that the pervasive state-centrism of Cuba’s prevailing socialist model is a hybrid of ‘statist utopianism’ and the Stalinist imprint of a post-1970, relative Sovietisation of the Cuban Revolution. Statist utopianism is conceptualised in a Marxist theoretical framework as a distinctive approach to the socialist transition: imposing a communist vision on society rather than striving for its organic realisation. Unlike 16th–19th century Utopian socialism, statist utopianism rests on proletarian state power and has a state-centric dynamic. Statist utopianism is conceptualised as having intrinsic subjective as well as political-economic dimensions. The thesis distinguishes between, and contrasts, ‘organic transcendence’ and statist utopian approaches to the socialist transition. The concept of statist utopianism is grounded historically in the late 1960s Cuban and early Soviet experiences of socialist transition. Cuba’s 1968–70 Revolutionary Offensive, which nationalised the remnant urban private sector, is characterised as a statist utopian ‘great leap forward’. The significance of certain continuities and convergences between Cuba’s late 1960s ‘idealist’ phase and subsequent partial and uneven Sovietisation have been understated or overlooked. The thesis identifies methodological weaknesses in the ‘historical pendulum’ approach to the periodisation of the Cuban Revolution. It concludes that certain conceptual identities and institutional peculiarities of the prevailing (and now receding) Cuban socialist model comprise a mutually reinforcing state-centric nexus that cannot be explained on the basis of Sovietisation alone, and which therefore seems to be a peculiar hybrid of statist utopianism and the Stalinist imprint of Sovietisation. The concept of statist utopianism developed in this thesis casts the Cuban socialist transition and the Cuban Communist Party’s contemporary renovation project in a distinct light.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the intellectual aspects of socialism in Indonesia—and democratic socialism in particular—by focusing on three figures in the Indonesian Socialist Party (PSI): Sutan Sjahrir, Soedjatmoko and Sumitro Djojohadikusumo. Through analysing articles and the writings of these key figures, this study shows how democratic socialist thought evolved from the nationalist movement period in the 1930s to the rise of the New Order developmental state in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The origin of Indonesia’s democratic socialist movement stemmed from intellectuals and the study-club network connected to Sjahrir; specifically, in the context of the struggle against fascism and colonial conservatism. Rejecting both the mainstream nationalists’ obsession with unity and Marxist-Leninist notions of class struggle, the democratic socialists established the democratic transformation of Indonesian society as the ultimate goal of national liberation. They sought to achieve this transformation through anti-feudal modernisation. Some of the most significant contributions of democratic socialism were through establishing parliamentary democracy and the multi-party system in the 1950s, as well as modernising technocratic intellectuals, who played a major role in socioeconomic development planning. While the PSI was short-lived as a party, and its aim of establishing a welfare state based on the principles of economic democracy was hindered by the rise of authoritarian regimes, it created an intellectual tradition that has endured to the present day.

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
The main aim of this thesis is to analyse and explore the philosophical justifications for freedom of speech during the nineteenth century and their application as political praxis. In this work, specific types of free speech argument are identified and examined in the light of the ideological stance of those who sought to argue for freedom of speech, primarily from key ideological perspectives of the nineteenth century, utilitarianism, liberalism and socialism. Initially three types of free speech argument are identified: the accountability argument, the liberty argument and the truth argument. However, on an inspection of socialist arguments for freedom of speech, the author suggests that a fourth sufficiently distinct type of free speech argument is present, particularly within the more mature works of socialist radicals and agitators. Though the arguments for freedom of speech overlap within different ideological and historical contexts, a case is made for a relatively distinct type of free speech argument within the socialist political praxis of free speech. Furthermore, in examining key political and philosophical texts, and an analysis of the free speech arguments in nineteenth century political pamphlets and newspapers, the argument is made that in order to gain a thorough understanding of political history and philosophy a holistic approach should be adopted, one which looks at ideas, context, history, artefact, and political praxis.

Parade Square in Warsaw is a battleground where different political projects are confronted, without any possibility of a seamless reconciliation. Prior to World War II, the area used to be a dense residential neighborhood. In the post war years, it was reconfigured by the socialist urban design project. It became the site of a monumental skyscraper commissioned by Stalin, called the Palace of Culture and Science. Today, having been used as a parking lot for the past quarter of a century, Parade Square is about to be reconfigured again, this time by the neo-liberal economic forces. This thesis positions the square as an agonistic space, in which every order is political and based on some form of exclusion. The project seeks to disrupt the prevailing contemporary discourse about the future of Parade Square and to bring to the fore other possibilities that have been repressed and that can be reactivated.

Streszczenie:
The collapse of socialism has generated enormous social, economic and political upheaval in central and eastern Europe. The impact of these transformations on constructions of gender and daily gendered practices have been hugely diverse. Nevertheless, an emerging, recurrent theme has been the prominence of competing and contested ideas about motherhood, reproduction, femininity and women's work. This thesis addresses how these tensions emerge and unfold within an institution in Prague comprising of a convent, a women's prison and a nursing home. It traces how constructions of motherhood and nurture and particular idioms of 'public' and 'private' moralities, all characteristic of the socialist era in Czechoslovakia, are being reformulated within new ideologies of 'work', patient care and prisoner rehabilitation within this institution. It explores how these processes echo with the experience of different people in a variety of ways. 5 A key concern is how social relationships and daily practices in this institution constitute 'home' as an imagined domain of gendered 'authenticity'. It is proposed that 'home' operates as a key imaginary that is perpetually reified and transformed, invoked as a justification for processes of categorisation and discipline, but also powerfully used to refuse and transcend them. The thesis focuses on how 'home' is performed in ways which constitute it as an authentic 'reality' outside the institution. Accompanying the written thesis is a documentary film, Domov, the making of which was an integral part of the research project. Ethnographically, the thesis focuses on three main areas of investigation. Firstly there is a discussion of eating and drinking practices as arenas for competing ideas about emotional labour and the simulation of 'home' in the institution. Secondly the different scopic regimes in the nursing home and prison are explored. Here the use of a video camera as a research method is central to the theoretical consideration of different modalities of surveillance. Finally, the narrative of the accompanying film is theoretically elaborated, through a consideration of how the imaginaries of 'home' maintained by three women (a patient, a prisoner and a nurse) were fundamentally challenged on their departure from the institution

Streszczenie:
This dissertation studies socialist utopian literature published in Britain and America from 1888-1900. The central thesis is that they shared an underlying theoretical basis regarding how they were imagined to function, and why. Details obviously varied, but these texts shared a common structure which can be defined in terms of five interrelated themes: economics; ethics; environment; education; and evolution. These socialist utopias embodied a certain set of relations between these themes. Planned cooperative economies would be founded upon a socialist ethic inculcated by education and the environment, and the whole was posited as the product of historical evolution. These interrelated aspects were seen as the necessary foundations that would enable a socialist utopia - a united, harmonious society, characterised by association, community, and cooperation. This would convert society into a "community of interests", and an "administration of things", enabling collective democratic control of a socialist economy. This pattern can be found across the literature, underlying various strands of contemporary socialism and internal splits dividing the ideology. The most prominent of these, as manifested in utopian literature, was between state socialism and communitarian or libertarian socialist approaches. This divide is best encapsulated in the two most-famous examples, represented by Edward Bellamy's Looking Backward and William Morris' News from Nowhere respectively, which dominate existing secondary accounts. However, the differences between these two strands were not as great as often supposed. These complex issues have been approached through the prism of the key figure of Bellamy, and five of his respondents who are essentially unstudied. This is both because of the size of the literature (around 50 texts), but also Bellamy's overwhelming significance in existing secondary accounts, and to his contemporaries. Morris however is considered mainly as a touching-point in relation to other texts, there being little to add to existing accounts.

Broad-scale political and socio-economic conditions are powerful determinants of land use change. Yet, their relative importance is unclear. The main goal of this thesis was to increase the understanding of such broad-scale drivers of land use change by studying how Eastern Europe’s landscapes were affected by the political and socio-economic transition after the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989. The border triangle of Poland, Slovakia, and Ukraine in the Carpathians was selected as a study area, because cross-border comparisons of land use change allow for decoupling overall trends in the transition period from country specific changes. Moreover, the Carpathians are of exceptional ecological value, but little is known about land use effects on these ecosystems after 1989. Post-socialist land use change was quantified based on Landsat TM/ETM+ images by (1) comparing contemporary (year 2000) landscapes among countries, and (2) using images from 1986 to 2000 to investigate whether differences originated from socialist or post-socialist land use change. Results indicated that forest change, farmland abandonment, and farmland parcelization were widespread in the transition period, likely due to worsening economic conditions, weakened institutions, and societal change. However, land use trends also differed strongly among the three countries due to dissimilar land ownership patterns, land management practices, and land reforms. Poland and Slovakia converged in the transition period in terms of land cover, while Ukraine clearly diverged. This thesis provided compelling evidence of the importance of economic and institutional change for land use change and underpinned the pivotal role of ownership patterns and land management policies. These factors were important to understand land use change in Eastern Europe, and they are likely equally important elsewhere.
