Streszczenie:
This thesis explores the ethical development of social workers and the role of supervision in that development. It begins with an examination of the social work context for the study, including the early history of social work and the ways in which it was influenced by the major social and cultural movements of the late 20th century, concluding with a discussion of both the threats posed and the possibilities emerging for social work in the 21st century. It then considers the ethical context for the study. It investigates the ethical theories and traditions that have contributed to the development of social work ethics and the role of professional ethics (including codes of ethics). It then proposes that a pluralist approach to social work ethics is the most appropriate way forward. This is followed by an examination of ethical development and the importance of reflection. Various models of ethical decision-making are compared and an inclusive, reflective model is found to be the most appropriate for social work in terms of both particular dilemmas faced and the overall development of workers as ethical decision-makers. The focus of the thesis then moves to supervision, exploring its history, its central place in social work and some of the problems that can arise for both supervisors and the social workers they supervise. It is argued that the reflection required to develop as ethical decision-makers is most logically located within the relationship and processes of supervision and that supervisors have an important role in guiding that reflection and development. The next part of the thesis describes the qualitative and action research strategies employed and examines the results emerging from the data. Participants in the focus groups were social workers who supervise other social workers, and they each met for two sessions, six months apart. Between the two sessions, they were asked to trial in supervision a framework for reflection on practice. The data emerging from the groups reflected the theoretical development begun in the early chapters, including the importance of reflection and the role of supervision in assisting the ethical development of workers, particularly in terms of deconstructing dilemmas and being able to articulate the reasons for decisions made. The thesis concludes that no one ethical theory is sufficient to support the ethical decision-making required for the practice of social work. Rather, a pluralist approach that allows a dilemma to be considered from a number of theoretical perspectives is more appropriate. Alongside this, an inclusive, reflective model of ethical decision-making reflects that pluralist approach and supports the ethical development of the individual worker. Supervision is vital in guiding the reflection required to make justifiable ethical decisions and to develop as ethical decision-makers.

Streszczenie:
Social work struggles between the dichotomy of “individual” and “society” as it is characterized as enhancing both individual well-being and social justice. As these are not always easily balanced and social work has limited autonomy, social workers must develop their capacity for making moral judgments and defend these within their various roles and responsibilities. Studies which explore the role of ethics in social work practice enhance the potential for maintaining a common identity. This exploration permits a deeper understanding of social work ethics and reinforces a common framework inclusive of purpose and standards for the profession. These studies also capture the contextual factors impacting on the moral agency of social workers, and thus substantiate the role for social work in a world with structured oppression. The purpose of this study was to obtain an in-depth understanding of social work ethics in the practice context of public hospitals in Greece. Using a case study design, data was gathered to explore and understand the role of social work ethics in daily practice and the formation of what is perceived as “good” practice. The analysis followed Yin‟s (1993) descriptive strategy. Data collection included fifteen in-depth interviews with hospital social workers, a group interview with social work academics, and a thematic analysis of the social work journal of the Hellenic Association of Social Workers (HASW). The meaning of ethical dilemmas and problems appeared to be constructed by personally held values, a lack of attention in social work education and the HASW on social work ethics, a professional emphasis on individualism rather than collectivism, and insufficient social protection in Greece. Importantly, these factors led to a fairly consistent response to ethical problems. “Having a clear conscience”, character traits such as bravery and imaginativeness, as well as the use of psychotherapy emerged as characteristics of “good” social work practice. These findings are of value to those who try to restore the values and ethics as central in social work. Values and ethics as key elements of social work expertise can lead social workers to a more competent and effective practice in terms of their ethical engagements.

This study explores the field of social work values in the social work profession. The aim of the study is to explore how social work values are related to empowerment practices and organizational structures inside the social work field. By using the perspective of empowerment and professional doxa these structures inside the social work field are explored in interviews with nine social workers. These nine interviews show how social workers relate to values insides their profession, how empowerment practices are done, and what kind of organizational conflicts social workers may experience. By using the perspectives of empowerment and professional doxa the interviews been analysed and connected to both local and global concerns for the social work field. Many professional conflicts were found by taking these perspectives that are discussed in this study, as for example role conflicts social workers could experience. Other conflicts were those of structural failures that caused harm to client contacts and economic factors that were deemed more important for organizations than good client outcomes.

Streszczenie:
This submission is based on a critical analytical literature review of the moral paradigm of virtue ethics and a specific application of this to social work value discourse in search of lost identity. It echoes the philosophical academy's paradigmatic wars between 'act' and 'agent' appraisals in moral theory. Act appraisal theories focus on a person's act as the primary source of moral value whereas agent appraisal theories - whether 'agentprior' or stricter 'agent-based' versions - focus on a person's disposition to act morally. This generates a philosophical debate about which type of appraisal should take precedence in making an overall evaluation of a person's moral performance. My starting point is that at core social work is an altruistic activity entailing a deep commitment, a 'moral impulse', towards the distressed 'other'. This should privilege dispositional models of value that stress character and good motivation correctly applied - in effect making for an ethical career built upon the requisite moral virtues. However, the neo-liberal and neo-conservative state hegemony has all but vanquished the moral impulse and its correct application. In virtue ethical language, we live in 'vicious' times. I claim that social work's adherence to act appraisal Kantian and Utilitarian models is implicated in this loss. Kantian 'deontic' theory stresses inviolable moral principle to be obeyed irrespective of outcome: Utilitarian 'consequentualist' theory calculates the best moral outcome measured against principle. The withering of social work as a morally active profession has culminated in the state regulator's Code of Practice. This makes for a conformity of behaviour which I call 'proto-ethical' to distinguish it from 'ethics proper'. The Code demands that de-moralised practitioners dutifully follow policy, rules, procedures and targets - ersatz, piecemeal and simplistic forms of deontic and consequentualist act appraisals. Numerous inquiries into social work failures indict practitioners for such behaviour. I draw upon mainstream virtue ethical theory and the emergent social work counter discourse to get beyond both code and the simplified under-theoretisation of social work value. I defend a thesis regarding an identity-defining cluster of social work specific virtues. I propose two modules: 'righteous indignation' to capture the heartfelt moral impulse, and 'just generosity' to mindfully delineate the scope and legitimacy of the former. Their operation generates an exchange relationship with the client whereby the social worker builds 'surplus value' to give back more than must be taken in the transaction. I construct a social work specific minimal-maximal 'stability standard' to anchor the morally correct expression of these two modules and the estimation of surplus value. In satisficing terms, the standard describes what is good enough but is also potentially expansive. A derivative social work practice of moral value is embedded in an historic 'care and control' dialectic. The uncomfortable landscape is one of moral ambiguity and paradoxicality, to be navigated well in virtue terms. I argue that it is incongruous to speak of charactereological social worker virtues and vices and then not to employ the same paradigm to the client's moral world. This invites a functional analysis of virtue. The telos of social work - our moral impulse at work - directs us to scrutiny of the unsafe household. Our mandate is the well-being of the putative client within, discoursed in terms of functional life-stage virtues and vicious circumstance. I employ the allegorical device of a personal ethical journey from interested lay person to committed social worker, tracking the character-building moral peregrinations. I focus on two criticisms of virtue ethics - a philosophical fork. It is said that virtue ethical theory cannot of itself generate any reliable, independently validated action guidance. In so far as it does, the theory will endorse an as-given, even reactionary, criterion of right action, making 'virtue and vice' talk the bastion of the establishment power holders who control knowledge. I seek to repudiate these claims. Given that this demands a new approach to moral pedagogy, the practical implications for the suitability and training of social workers are discussed.

Streszczenie:
For decades, ethical issues have been seen as a problem throughout the social work profession, not just in the UK but also internationally. In the English context, the Care Standards Act 2000, which led to the establishment of the General Social Care Council, aimed to protect service users, employers and social workers/social care practitioners through the publication of codes of practice. As Strom-Gottfried and 0'Aprix (2006) have noted, however, the plethora of codes of ethics and codes of conduct have failed to address explicitly the issues faced by those regulated by them. Consequently, the actual situation in England remains the same: practitioners work in difficult situations that frequently result in ethical dilemmas, yet the guidance fails to address the actual complexity of the situations in which practitioners find themselves. The aim of this research was to investigate the expenences of practitioners In England working for statutory social services in comparison with those of practitioners from social action organisations and who work for the voluntary sector, in relation to their conduct, ethics and professional values. The methodological framework was based on Grounded Theory. The data were collected VIa focus groups, semi-structured interviews, semi-structured questionnaires and vignette-based interviews. Constant comparisons were made between sectors during the data analysis. The research was validated by intertriangulation and by communicative validation. The concept of power remained the sole category of the Grounded Theory process once the research had reached saturation. The key conclusion was that, by adopting a Foucaultian perspective, the "organisational context of work" is an expression of the power relationships that influence the ethical decision-making of social workers and social care practitioners. The concept of virtue ethics was introduced in the discussion of the data to counteract the effect of power felt by social workers and social care practitioners. The research concluded by proposing ways of incorporating the findings into the teaching of social work at the higher educational level and among qualified practitioners, emphasising the concept of practical reasoning (MacIntyre 1999) at the collective level.

Canadian health professionals are involved in humanitarian assistance and development work in many regions of the world. They participate in primary health care, immunization campaigns, feeding programs, rehabilitation and hospital-based care. In the course of their work clinicians are frequently exposed to complex ethical issues. This thesis examines how health workers experience ethics in the course of humanitarian assistance and development work. A qualitative study was conducted to consider this question. Five core themes emerged from the data including experiencing a tension between respecting local customs and imposing values, knowing how to respond when basic care is impossible, addressing differing understandings of health and illness, questions of identity for health workers, and issues of trust and distrust. Recommendations are made for standards and organizational strategies that could help aid agencies better support and equip their staff as they respond to ethical issues.

In the dry season, the scarred surface hardens, and a layer of dust rises from tires and wind in a murky red mist. The narrow road, eut aggressively up the mountain, is precarious. A bridge over a small stream is littered with broken logs used to patch gaping holes that trap the tires of passing trucks. The bridge barely holds its banks. At a crossroads, up a steep slope, sits a monument to the Virgin Mary. Colorfully dressed women walk slowly up the scorched hill, heavy loads on their heads, sorne with a baby or a small child wrapped tightly against their backs. Men with farm implements kick the dust on their way to Gishamvu.

The goal of this dissertation is to elaborate a contextual gendered African Christian social ethics that addresses the oppression and marginalization of working women in Africa. The author argues that in order to meet this goal, it is necessary to contextualize CST, to introduce a feminist hermeneutics along with works from African women theologians, to include African liberation theology and to add the analysis of the social sciences. The dissertation has four chapters. The first chapter presents how CST (Roman magisterium and African bishops) has tackled the issue of the empowerment of workers in general and that of women in particular in post-conciliar documents. It assesses the strengths and weaknesses of CST. The following chapters address those weaknesses. The second chapter offers a systematic analysis of the condition of working women with the help of social sciences. The third chapter presents the theoretical components of a gendered African social ethics. The latter relies on African liberation theology, CST principles, and elements of feminist thought. The fourth chapter deepens the analysis of the notion of empowerment and suggests four concrete practices to empower working women, namely, socializing the feminine, the church’s conversion, biblical storytelling and partnering with other institutions

The purpose of this study is to illustrate where the boundary between being professional and being private in the line of work as a personal assistant lie, this study will focus on the perspective of the unit manager. This to clarify the ethical approach in the assistance matters for the unit manager. To answer the study's purpose and questions, six individual semi-structured interviews have been held with unit managers responsible for personal assistance in municipal activities. During the interviews, the unit managers shared their own experiences about the subject of the study. The empirical material has been analyzed with the help of normative ethics theories of duty and sense ethics. The result of the study shows that unit managers find it difficult to take a stand as where the boundary between being professional and being private in personal assistance lies. There are many different factors to take into consideration when discussion where the boundary lies for each individual. Having good municipal guidelines regarding the work of the assistance is something the unit managers see as a good tool for taking a position on questions about the work of the assistants. The empirical material also highlights that there is a lot of ethical dilemmas in the matter of personal assistance, and how the unit managers handle these.

Streszczenie:
The purpose of this study was the examination of age bias in social work professionals who have direct and influential contact with a growing segment of the population: older adults. Those who work most closely with older people may be at risk for age bias, although much of the research on age bias has been conducted with students rather than with those who work with older people. This study adds to the research on prejudice; the sources from which attitudes, values, prejudices, and stereotypical thinking arise were addressed. Key experiences with older individuals were found to predict age bias. Because social work ethical principles closely align with conditions known to reduce prejudice, it was hypothesized that higher ethics adherence would be associated with less age bias. Specific experiential factors were found to influence prejudice toward older people. Influences from family beliefs and from television and other media were associated with a non-biased attitude, as were influences from caregiving to older people. These sources of one's values and beliefs about older individuals were also found to predict the extent of one's knowledge of aging processes. Although ethics adherence was not a predictor of age bias, the discovery of the influence of family beliefs, media portrayals, and caregiving experiences revealed a need for awareness of ageist beliefs in a professional population that works extensively with older adults.

Social work is a social phenomenon, existing in most societies, that has given rise to a multitude of special organizations and professions. For that reason social work is dealing with a complex identity. The purpose of this study is to illustrate how social workers and the scientific discourse interpret the concept of social work. In addition to that the study intends to show similarities and differencies. The research process containes two studies, one based on qualitative interviews with five social workers and the other consisting a surway of academic litterature. To enable a comparison of the results the studies start out of some, deliberatly choosen, themes. These are “definitions of social work”, “socialworkers”, “society, law and organization” and “ethics”.

In summary, the results, reviled a surprising unity in the interpretations of social work. Social workers, as well as the scientific discourse, manifest social work as a profession that promotes social change and problem solving in human relationships. The differencies concern social work beeing interpret normative by the social workers and more descriptive by the scientific discourse.

This dissertation examines the significance of work and leisure from the perspective of Christian theology and ethics. Specifying work as obligatory activity and leisure as discretionary activity, the dissertation argues that a theological vision for work as a form of service and leisure as a form of peace can challenge some of the most damaging assumptions about paid employment and the use of free time. In the process, the dissertation also identifies the personal and social transformations necessary to make the theological vision a reality, and it proposes a distinct methodology for linking ethics with both lived experience and substantive theological claims. Chapter one outlines the current state of work in the United States, asserting that changes in the nature of work, the demographics of the workforce, and the structure of business have made workers more dependent on paid employment and less secure in their jobs. After discussing the implications of these changes for gender assumptions and family life, this chapter argues that the root causes of dependence and insecurity lie in an increasingly individualistic culture and its concomitant spirit of consumerism. Responding to the problems identified in chapter one, chapter two offers a theological vision for what work could become if Christian theological convictions were integrated more fully into this sphere of life. A critical overview of the traditional language of vocation yields a "charismatic-vocational" understanding of work, which stresses the dynamic nature of both God's call and an individual's response. This vision is further refined with insights about the relational nature of the human person and about Jesus' work for the kingdom of God. Christians, then, are encouraged to see their work as an intrinsic good that uses their particular charisms to serve God and neighbor. Chapter three uses the virtue of justice--biblically defined as right relationship--to pinpoint the structural reforms needed to make the theological vision for work more viable. In conversation with Catholic social teaching, this yields a constructive vision for just remuneration and a necessary critique of executive compensation practices. The result is a more relational understanding of work for employers and employees alike. Shifting to leisure, chapter four notes that the two most common leisure activities (watching TV and using digital media) are defined by superficiality and isolation. The former is described in opposition to depth and "flow," and the latter in contrast to robust community ties. In both cases, relationships are identified as the key casualty. Chapter five distinguishes leisure (flow-like activities) from recreation (non-flow activities) and engages Christian eschatology to insist that leisure is properly a temporary prefiguration of peaceful rest in God while recreation serves as a form of recuperation that helps one fulfill his or her charismatic-vocational responsibilities. Augustine's classic categories of enjoyment and use are then adapted to create a balanced approach to leisure and recreation that avoids idolatrous extremes. Chapter six develops a general ethics for leisure and recreation by relying on the virtue of solidarity. The distinctively Christian notion of this virtue yields a defense of a weekly day of rest for every worker. Parallels with Aquinas then create an ordering of leisure as well as guidelines for the ethical evaluation of particular recreational pursuits. The conclusion addresses the central benefits of the overall project, highlighting the value and necessity of promoting the practice of ethical discernment in everyday life

Streszczenie:
This thesis explores Greek social work students' perceptions of the development of their professional values and ethics in the workplace during their professional practice placement. To accomplish its goals, the thesis includes a literature review and employs a qualitative exploratory research design with descriptive elements positioned within the constructivist paradigm. This research design allows the researcher to explore and describe a topic - social work values and ethics - that is generally under-researched in the existing literature, as well as being complex in nature and difficult to study. Data were collected using the critical incident technique (CIT). This method took the form of a written questionnaire (the CIT questionnaire) completed by 32 students between 11th and 25th October, 2010. The data were inductively analysed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. SPSS and SPAD software packages were also used to analyse the numerical and textual data respectively. The study findings underline the vital role of the workplace as a social space for students to learn and develop their professional social work values and ethics. They also highlight the complexity of implementing social work values and ethics in the different workplace environments that students, as trainees, are placed for their professional practice due to their situation-specific nature. Further, the study reveals a number of factors that, from the students' point of view, are important in applying and upholding professional ethical standards in social work practice. These factors are associated with: a) the need to practice social work values and ethics in the workplace on a daily basis in order to keep them alive and active; b) the students' own contribution to upholding ethical standards; c) the role practice instructors/supervisors play in the transmission of social work values to students during their placements; d) the importance of ethical collaboration inside and outside the workplace to achieve the best practices for clients; e) the client's behaviour as a determinant of the ethical practice of social workers in the workplace; and f) the importance of the ethics of management (including the political affiliation of the heads of organisations) in creating and sustaining an ethical work/learning environment. The study suggests that all the factors mentioned above-to a greater or lesser degree- should be considered important elements to take into account in the planning and development of values-based social work education programmes. Special attention should be paid to workplace conditions that can hinder or support the development of values-based social work practice. As the study clearly shows, daily ethical practice in social work, students as individuals, the role of practice instructors, ethical workplace collaboration, client behaviour, and the ethics of management are crucial components for building upon the ethical skills taught in the classroom and developing ethically informed professional identities in real-life workplace situations. The thesis concludes that the critical incidents experienced by students are a valuable source of knowledge and understanding of the development of social work values and ethics in professional practice. In this study, indeed, students gained valuable insights into their ethics development process in practice contexts, from both positive and negative critical incidents alike.

The dissertation deals with ethical aspects related to the reproduction of religious values, in nature and origin, of the volunteer social worker. Is based on Marxist tradition of Social Work in Brazil with regards to the development of the Political- Ethical Professional Project. Presents the connections between the profession s theoretical scope and the contemporary volunteering socio-historical assumptions, trying to rationalize the controversial aspects resulting in the reality revelation. Offers support for a secular debate about the charity s moral values in the situations that involves volunteer social work, as well as indicates for further studies on ethical grounds in face of the work category in contemporary capitalism. It presents qualitative research matured as result of previous studies about the relationship between the profession and the religious institutions, and the Social Work learner s profile that involves the professional training and religiosity. This research analyses, lastly, the delineate tints of the profession practiced without payment, addressing its interfaces with the work s precariousness, with the social problems depoliticization in capitalist society and the ethical and political praxis of social worker s complexities
This study is about how school counselors in Kalmar County view the need for a pupil curative work online, what they believe are ethical aspects to be considered in social work online and if they feel they have sufficient training to conduct pupil curative conversations online. The aim has been to make contact with universities in Sweden to see if they have elements of social work education that lectures a social work online. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with school counselors in Kalmar County. The majority of the interviewed school counselors lacked the knowledge and experience of a student curative work online but some had discussed this phenomenon at work. One counselor worked daily with a pupil curative work online. The intention of interviewing universities to investigate whether there are elements of social work education that addresses a social work online defaulted unfortunately because they choose not to participate in the study. The main conclusion of our study is that school counselors consider themselves lacking sufficient knowledge to conduct pupil curative conversations online. All of the interviewed councilors wanted more knowledge about and discussion on the phenomenon. School counselors showed a slight ambivalence to a pupil curative work online, while many felt that they should meet young people where they were, in this case on the internet, they still advocated that personal interaction face to face is superior to internet curative work.

Streszczenie:

Ongoing structural and financial changes in the health care sector have resulted in increased risks for ethical dilemmas and moral distress. It is purported that increased ethical competence will help staff manage ethical dilemmas and hence decrease moral distress. To enhance ethical competence several approaches may be used – theoretical education, and methods focusing on reflection and decision-making abilities.

Ethics rounds are a widespread systematic method hypothesized to improve ethical competence, nurture a reflective climate, and help in ethical decision-making. Despite its popularity, its effects on moral distress have hitherto never been evaluated in a controlled study.

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the impact of an intervention, including ethics rounds; the hypothesis being that the intervention would decrease perceived moral distress. An additional aim was exploring the concept of moral distress in various health care establishments, including pharmacies.

Focus groups were conducted to explore the concept of moral distress. To evaluate the intervention a scale assessing staff-perceived moral distress was designed, validated, and implemented.

Results showed that moral distress is evident in diverse health care settings. Some factors associated with this were lack of resources, conflicts of interest, and rules that are incompatible with practice. An expanded definition of moral distress was presented.

The training program was much appreciated by participants. However, no significant effects on perceived moral distress were found. Reasons could be that the intervention was too short or otherwise ineffective, there is no association between ethical competence and moral distress, the assessment scale was not sensitive enough, or management was not sufficiently involved.

There is a need to further refine the various aspects of ethical dilemmas in clinical settings, and to evaluate the most efficient means to enhance skills for dealing with ethical dilemmas, for the benefit of staff, patients, institutions, and society.

The aim of this study was to investigate how staff in their role at special accommodations for people with disabilities are experiencing and handling situations regarding the sexuality of clients with disabilities, to understand how staff uses their discretion in situations regarding client’s sexuality and understand how staff reason and act based on deontological ethics and consequence ethics. Group interviews were conducted with staff at special accommodations for people with disabilities, using a hermeneutic research approach to understand the staff’s narrative. We analysed the empirical material with the concepts and theories such as discretion, a relational perspective on discretion and the two ethical theories mentioned above this were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Our main findings were that staff use discretion in different ways depending on how they reason ethically in situations regarding the client’s sexuality within the limitations of their discretion. We found that staff does not work with client’s sexuality continuously but that they act when a situation arises. We also found that staff took the responsibility to help and guide as well as correct client’s questions of sexuality and sexual behaviours mostly out of the feeling of deontological ethics due to toughs of bad consequences for the clients or the surrounding community. Staff needs more knowledge and education about the sexuality of clients with disabilities; how they should balance their many responsibilities and their personal values which without support could lead to inner conflicts and feelings of being insufficient. We found that education and information about the client's sexual needs and staff’s working conditions are needed for better understanding and development of the discussion regarding the client's sexuality. We also found that education for staff about how sexuality is being expressed by people with mental disabilities could be valuable for continued social work.

The purpose of this study was to compare the work ethic attitudes and behaviors of entering Ethos freshmen to students who were about to graduate. Data was collected by two means, first by using the Multidimensional Work Ethic Profile (MWEP) instrument and the second by analyzing existing work ethic grades issued by faculty. The dependent variables were the seven dimensions of work ethic in the MWEP and the five Ethos work ethic traits. The population for this study consisted of members of the freshman and graduating classes from the 2013-2014 and 2014-2015 school years. A purposive sample was taken from work ethic surveys and the work ethic grades of the selected college students, comprising a sample believed to be representative of the total population. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results and to determine whether there was a significant difference between the means of freshmen and graduates’ self-assessments. Similar methods were used to analyze and report any differences in the means of freshman and graduate work ethic grades awarded by faculty.

Results should be considered baseline information for Ethos College leadership to consider and to improve upon. Recommendations for future study include replicating this study for present and future classes, to look for trends in work ethic as curriculum develops and evolves. The overarching research question was, does the teaching and methodology at Ethos improve the work ethic of its students? Student survey data and the faculty-awarded work ethic grades were used to determine if there was value added from the training provided by Ethos leadership and faculty. The Ethos Board of Trustees, President, Office of Education, Academic Dean, and the Vice President of Education, the college’s chief academic officer, were accountable for providing quality educational processes in all areas of education at the college. There were mixed results in the evidence that the college was successful in this important discipline impacting student-learning outcomes.

Within the group opioid users, mortality rates are high. Many within this group are cared for in one of Sweden’s LVM-homes. Opioid dependence is often treated by using opioid maintenance therapy, in Sweden often referred to as LARO. Within LVM, LARO has been active for a little over two years and is available in three LVM-homes. This specific topic has never been researched, however a research project is currently active in one of these three LVM-homes. The aim of this study is to point out an ethical conflict in the use of LARO within compulsory care and how the employees relate to this conflict. It also aims to close a knowledge gap. We connect the results to the theories we have chosen to better interpret the results. We use theories on ethics, such as obligation ethics and utilitarianism. As these are not sufficient to interpret our results we also use labelling theory and stigma. We have carried out qualitative interviews to answer our questions. We interpret the results of these by coding transcriptions and present the results thematically. The results of the analysis, and interpretation with the help of previous research and theory, brings out different aspects. The employees emphasize the advantages they can see with LARO, such as its life saving probabilities and improvement in quality of life. They also highlight what impact the health cares role has on clients and employees and request a more distinct regulatory system surrounding LARO. They also talk about the importance of working with the social complex of problems, LARO is merely a medicine. Furthermore, the interviewed employees speak very sparsely about their ethical position on this treatment. Our results point out the importance of further research on the subject, and a discussion about the absence of ethical discourse within the professional society.

For this paper we have used a qualitative literature study to answer purpose and problem statements. The purpose of this study is to exam the importance of humor in social workers meeting with clients. The study has been inspired of a narrative method and analysed according to Evans systematic approach. The number of research articles used after sample was 16 in number. The theoretical point of view was inspired by the KAIMeR model. The result revealed these themes and subthemes (in parentheses): The sense of humor (the sense of connection and interpersonal interactions), Coping (Icebreaker, Stress reduction and Recovery) and Risktaking (Gutfeeling and Timing). These results show how important it is that humor is used with sensitivity and in the right context. Humor used properly can result in a good start towards successful client alliances.

A large part of the study of politics is dedicated to identifying the circumstances under which democracy will flourish. Putnam made a major contribution to this field through his concept of social capital as developed in Making Democracy Work. Putnam found that communities with a high number of civic associations –i.e. social capital- had a better chance of developing an effective style of democratic government. This definition of social capital sparked much subsequent research and policy activity. It is argued here, however, that this work ignored the immediate needs of societies which do not have the required stock of social capital. There is still little guidance available on how effective government can be achieved even if the right societal circumstances are absent. This thesis hopes to find inspiration from government agencies that were successful despite their challenging social capital conditions. It specifically looks at sixteen public utilities on the Caribbean islands of Aruba, Curacao and St. Kitts between 2005 and 2009. The thesis then systematically investigates the relationship between the performance of the agencies and the behaviour of their senior officials. It emerges that in the absence of social capital, governance is in these cases mainly hampered by a deluge of irrelevant data. Successful utilities overcame this flood by constantly upgrading the quality of information, implementing a strict yet inclusive style of governance, and allowing strong leaders the space to translate words into actions. These outcomes suggest that social capital forms an important tool for ordering information, and that, in its absence, there are still alternative strategies available to secure success nonetheless.

Assessments of cases of suspected negligence with child and adolescent done by social workers make up the core of this dissertation. The questioning regarding the theoretical and methodological repertoire and moral dimension found in these situations become more relevant once the intention of the research is to reveal, in daily work, how these evaluations are materialized from the perspective of those who perform, the social workers. Thereto, apart from bibliographic research on the subject, it was also established - as part of the qualitative methodology - conducting semi-structured interviews with six randomly chosen social workers enrolled in different socio-occupational activities that offer assistance to families, and, among other demands, present situations of suspected neglect. Therefore, the two chapters deal with: 1 - evaluate critically and historically the interface among the Social Work, Children and Professional Ethics, dialoguing with their main characteristics; 2 - present field research, explaining the methodology and the main findings of the research. As part of the findings, there is a moral dimension and the use of value judgments in assessments of neglect, with predominant use of negative values by social workers. Noteworthy is also the perception of "neutrality" by the subject, reiterating the myth of the professional impartiality; the insufficient problematization on the ethical dimension in professional practice. Finally, we suggest the use of the concept of overcoming neglect, considering its current use filled with prejudice, and to review it guided by the perspective of protection and no protection

The aim of this study was to investigate how midwives at youth centres relate to the potential ethical dilemma between parents’ right to information that young people between 15-17 years share at the centre, vs. youths right to integrity. The study was based on qualitative interviews with six midwives in various youth centres in Stockholm County. We analysed our empirical material according to Blennbergers consequential ethical model and Bronfenbrenners ecological system model. The empirical data was categorized based on categories of information and integrity in relation to midwives' opinions and actions. The results show that midwives are careful to protect the integrity of young people and that parents’ right to information are neglected, unless there is a great risk that the youths will harm their lives or health. Often it is only when the midwives need to report to the social service that the parents are given right to information, which indicates that the ethical decisions that midwives make are based on their beliefs that the best consequence for the youths is for their integrity to be protected. It was revealed that the midwives experienced the decision as difficult, and sometimes even found it to be a dilemma.

Ethical breaches in many organizations can be traced to failures in ethical leadership, which undermine trust. If a leader's ethical behavior in their private life and settings is perceived as influencing workplace ethics, it may in turn affect organizational trust levels and the development of trust. A quantitative study based on the social learning and moral theory was conducted to determine whether a difference exists between a leader's self-perceptions of their ethical behaviors inside and outside of the workplace, and whether it affects their perceived personal trustworthiness. Participants' (N = 94) scores on work and nonwork versions of the ethical leadership scale were compared using a paired-samples t test, which determined no significant differences in their ethical behaviors inside and outside of the workplace. Then multiple regression analyses were conducted, which indicated that the model containing both independent variables regarding ethical behavior inside and outside the workplace significantly predicted changes in the dependent variable personal trustworthiness: F (7, 86) = 6.025, p < .001. The model explained 27% of the variance in personal trustworthiness. The model also significantly predicted changes in scores related to propensity to trust; F (10, 83) = 3.692, p < .001. The model explained 23% of the variance in propensity to trust. This research will aid leaders in understanding more about the perception of their own ethics and how this plays into the cultivation of trust. It also has implications that may influence leadership among all types of work environs, including government organizations and industry.

This study aims mainly at analyzing the conceptions of social workers about human rights based on the principles on which they are founded in the Social Work Code of Ethics and the Brazilian Statute for Children and Adolescents. Intending to achieve this objective, I carried out and extensive bibliographical research about the categories of study and analyzed some normative documents about the profession and about the children and adolescents` rights. As approach method, I also used qualitative research and semi-structured interview technique, which was guided by a script containing open ended questions, addressed to social professionals working in children and adolescents institutions in Espírito Santo. The theoretical basis adopted was the critical-dialectic method, which allowed analyzing human rights and as a contradict and social class struggle process. Through class struggle in several historical moments, the working class advanced towards inserting collective rights into the law. However, the control of the State is in the hands of those who need to expand capital therefore, rights are not fully materialized. From this study, I point out that these professional should be clearly critical about the fundaments and functionality of the posed reality, allowing thus, observing more clearly the non exercise of children and adolescents` rights, and also advance, together with the working class general struggle, towards the materialization of the Code of Ethics, for a fairer society.

This thesis discusses and deepens reflection about professional ethical exercise of the Social Worker in defense of human rights expressed in the Code of Ethics of 1993 in the perspective of Ethical-Political Project of Social Work. The analytical framework woven throughout the four chapters that constitute this work is result of a profound dialogue with Marxist theoretical framework and the research subjects, given that we chose a qualitative methodology and, from the narratives brought by Social Workers we dived into daily work and apprehended the meanings of ethical exercise. The subjects who participated in the interviews (collective and individual) were intentionally chosen, constituting a universe of six interlocutors with densely lived experiences of teaching disciplines about ethics, social protection, public policies, and also human rights activism. Thereby, chapter I presents the theoretical underpinnings that guided our study and the construction methodology for the field action. In Chapter II, we contextualise the socio-historical formation of Brazil, as well as the trajectory of Social Work from 1970 to 1990, questioning the construction of new Social Work professional project. Finally, Chapters III and IV, deepens reflection on the daily life of Social Worker and the ethical mediations. Diving into the details of Social Worker Professional day by day was challenging and satisfying because we unveiled a rich field of mediation ethics that, despite everyday challenges of institutional work, it opens paths and points out possibilities of interventions that aim to guarantee the human rights of users, intending an ethical and political exercise towards emancipatory values signed in the professional Code of Ethics

The aim of this study is to establish a comparative perspective of the Church ofSweden and Finn Church Aid (FCA) as development actors. The research willconcentrate on the study of the similarities and differences of their methods andapproaches. As case studies I will focus on the principles of the EAPPI program andLabeling the Origins campaigns. Methodologically, I shall study the interrelatednessof the practices and methods of specific actors with values and ethical positions and, especially, concentrate on the discussions dealing with discourses ofcosmopolitanism, Christian ethics and their overlaps. Narratives are used tocomplement discursive analysis. The theoretical framework consists of variouscosmopolitan theories that are applied to analyze the ideological aspects of the faith-based organization’s methods. The ethical aspects are presented from differentperspectives to create an understanding of the diversity of how cosmopolitanism canbe comprehended in relation to Christianity. The comparative perspective has createdan understanding of how networks are formed and how the same themes are presentin different organizations but guided by different discursive formations. This alsopoints towards the understanding that the perspective of networks is more significantthan countries or actors.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study was undertaken to address the need for a multi-sectoral approach to sexuality education among adolescents. The rise in teenage pregnancies and the rapid spread of the HIV virus urged the researcher to assess how different sectors within communities can work together to sexually educate adolescents. The goal of the research is to initiate planning of prevention- and educational strategies among all sectors of the community. It is hoped that these programmes may provide adolescents with the necessary skills to make informed decisions regarding their sexuality. The use of a multi-sectoral approach to sexuality education was evaluated by means of a exploratory study and a comparison between the findings of questionnaires and existing literature. In chapter two the nature of sexuality education is assessed. Chapter three focuses on the specific multi-sectoral approach to this sexuality education. In chapter four the findings of the empirical study is discussed. Recommendations for further research is made in chapter five.

This study aims to reflect on the nature of the daily work of Social Workers, considering the assumptions of the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, within the perspective of understanding how these professionals, through their work, can implement the Ethical and Political Project of that profession. This questioning starts from the reflection on two processes in the construction of the Brazilian social context, related to the professional performance of Social Workers inserted in Mental Health. These two processes are: the construction, trough the historical process of the organization of the Brazilian Social Work, of an Hegemonic Professional Ethical Political Project for that profession; and the consolidation, in the context of Brazilian Public Policies, of the process of giving social answers to the problem of the “madness” which, in the health environment, proposes a new way to the mental health services, called Psychiatric Reform. Considering that the two processes are complex, inserted in a contradictory social context, whose realization involves reflection and action of the concerned social subjects, the reality of existing factors, difficulties and contradictions that are determining them, may create improvements and retrogressions. The psychiatric Reform as well as the Ethical Political Project are enrolled in the fight between opponent social projects, subjected to the political and economic forces in presence. In that way, this research should contribute to maturing discussions on the professional achievement of Social Workers, through interdisciplinary relations, in the complex field of Mental Health, considering the cumulative ethical – political, theoretical – methodological and technical-operational development of this profession. This research aims to analyse how is constructed, in the daily work of Social Workers, the Ethical Political Project, into the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform proposals. The specific objectives are: Identify, in the work of Social Workers, through the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform, the ethical-political, theoretical-methodological and technical-operational elements of the Ethical Political Project of Social Work; highlight the points of agreement or of divergence between the Brazilian Psychiatric Reform and the Ethical Political of Social Work. Therefore, an analytic and descriptive Case Study research design was used, selecting a Psychiatric Hospital of Salvador as research fieldwork, with the support of Anthony Giddens’s Structuration Theory, in an ethnographical perspective. As data collecting instruments were used interviews with key informants, apart documental and bibliographical reviews. The collected data were analysed with the Content Analysis Method of Bardin (2012). The triangulation of data sets, such as thread of the analysis, the existence of a dispute between the asylum Model and the Model of Psychosocial running through the history of the institution, with the signer latter Social Service.

Streszczenie:
The goals of this study were threefold: (1) to identify what percentage of psychologists and clinical social workers disclose the diagnostic label BPD to their patients, (2) to identify factors that influence disclosure, and (3) to gather data about the choice to disclose or not to disclose. The MUM effect was used as the theoretical framework. A sequential explanatory mixed methods design including an online survey was used during the first phase. A total of 125 psychologists and 45 social workers participated in the Phase 1 of the study. The majority of participants stated that they either always or usually disclose diagnostic information. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to predict if there was a significant relationship between the independent variables concerns for self, concerns for the patient, societal norms, gender of the professional, professional occupation, theoretical orientation, and frequency of working with individuals diagnosed with BPD and the dependent variable disclosure. The results indicated a significant relationship between societal norms, gender of the professional, and frequency of working with individuals diagnosed with BPD and disclosure. Telephone interviews were conducted during Phase 2 of the study with a subset of the original sample and included 13 psychologists. The data were analyzed using content analysis with an emphasis on constant comparison. The results demonstrated that, of the 13 psychologists, concerns for the patient, concerns for self, and societal norms impact disclosure. Participants also expressed concerns about the stigma of the diagnosis and disclosure leading to defensiveness or negatively impacting the therapeutic relationship. This study may stimulate future research into disclosure and will inform the efforts of mental health workers in their efforts to establish more transparency and trust in their practices.
