Streszczenie:
The article focuses on the fact that the consequence of Bourdieu’s death is that we now have to respond specifically to the texts that he produced between 1958 and 2002, rather than to the impact of writing and political action in combination, which was his goal during his life. The article raises general questions about the status of social texts in relation to the practices of philosophy and social scientific enquiry to which Bourdieu must have returned in preparing his final course of lectures, published in 2001 as Science de la science et réflexivité. It then offers three case studies of this relationship in action in Bourdieu’s early work, considering his textual and scientific practices. It discusses aspects of the contemporary philosophical debate about the referentiality of texts at the time of this early work and thus indicates that this was a question of continuous importance in Bourdieu’s work. The article next reflects on the significance of Bourdieu’s thinking in this respect for the ways in which we should now respond to his texts and deploy his concepts empirically. It takes three examples of different ways in which Bourdieu’s texts have become pretexts for further research practice. These are characterized as ‘academic exploitation’, ‘nominal appropriation’ and ‘informed divergence’. The conclusion is that Bourdieu’s work demands a reflexive response, which requires that respondents should analyse rigorously their own situations and the grounds for transferring received concepts, and that this entails detailed attention to both Bourdieu’s texts and the contexts of their production, rather than a superficial exploitation or appropriation of his ‘consecrated’ texts.

In this article, we draw on the existential phenomenology of Martin Heidegger to propose an approach to sociology that takes human experiences of finitude and possibility as crucial topics of investigation. A concern with death is not absent in sociological thought. To the contrary, Durkheim’s Suicide grounds a sociological research tradition into death and dying. Yet Heidegger’s existentialism renders our finitude – not just death – a matter of everyday life, a constitutive feature of human existence and a source of sociological investigation. By explicating Heidegger’s interconnected concepts of finitude, futurity, authenticity and resoluteness, we propose to investigate people’s ordinary temporal experiences as well as the institutional contexts that make them possible. On this basis, we develop two concepts – existential marginalisation and existential exhaustion – that foreground questions of time, meaning and institutions in the study of poverty, inequality and everyday life.

Doctorov gives an interview where issues are touched upon related to the development and achievements of a project on the history of Soviet/Russian sociology, a project which he has been curating for almost 20 years, as well as to a biographical study in the field of American sociology and the study of public opinion. Doctorov’s project deals with solving the theoretical, methodological and empirical issues of applying the biographical method in historical-sociological research. The author’s main methodological developments include the concept of Russian sociology’s rebirth, substantiation for generational-functional analysis, and the notion of a biographical quality to creative work in sociology, which includes the recently launched development of non-linear biographical analysis. The article discusses the author’s empirical research related to determining the generational structure of Russia’s sociological community, as well as the possibility of its study by means of in-depth interview via e-mail. It also examines the content and relevance of a collection of interviews with Russian sociologists (titled “Big portrait”), as well as an online-book titled “Biographical interviews with social scientist colleagues” (this one is interactive) and the nine-volume “Modern Russian sociology: historical-biographical pursuits”, all of which mention the main findings of B. Doctorov’s project.

Otthein Rammstedt was an outstanding sociologist who spent most of his life editing Georg Simmel’s Gesamtausgabe, or collected works. Rammstedt gave much of his strength and energy to get this important publication completed. In 1993, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Simmel’s death, we put together a selection of his works and the articles written in his honor which was published in 1994 in the second issue of the Sociological Journal. Rammstedt then provided us with his manuscript on Simmel which we are going to republish in the Sociological Education section of our quarterly. His manuscript deserves to be published anew, not just for sad reasons — in the last issue, we announced that Ramstedt passed away after having completed his huge body of work — but also for reasons that are quite substantial. Classical sociology may seem to be a completed project, but it is still a resource that has not been fully exhausted or fully evaluated. The article by Rammstedt, who was experienced not only in the history of sociology but in its theory as well and was the long-term dean of the Faculty of Sociology in Bielefeld University, one of the most renowned sociological institutions in Europe, allows us to see how much we can take from the legacy of the classics. His text has obviously retained its considerable suitability, but, like many classical sociological writings, it needs a new revision or even perhaps a new translation. In any case, we hope this publication will give a new impetus to the study of Simmel’s writings as well as of sociological classics, while at the same time paying a debt of gratitude to the prominent German sociologist, Otthein Rammstedt

English abstract: Despite the ostracism he maintained towards them, Le Play’s social science continuers did not ignore Durkheim’s work and commented on it – even if laconically – in their journals. The LePlayists loyal to the master’s orthodoxy raised the same grievances against Durkheim throughout his academic life. They refused to accept his conception of the social fact as superior and prior to the individual, imposing itself on him with a coercive force. Their criticisms, however, were less virulent after Durkheim’s death, as sociology proved a sustainable science whose project had become irrefutable. With the dissident LePlayists, the view is different. Emerging later, it dealt with the object of sociology and the method advocated by the author of the Règles. From the Tourvillians’ point of view, Durkheim’s sociology does not adopt the best path for social science (investigation by direct observation), and neglects its process of coordination of social facts (the nomenclature developed by Tourville). Consequently, Durkheim’s results are questionable. The debate the Tourvillians wanted to have with Durkheim took place post mortem, thanks to Bouglé and his students from the Centre de documentation sociale, and their engagement, in the 1930s, with Durkheimian sociology and social science.

The digital age has rekindled popular and academic interest in immortality. While the idea of immortality has long been recognized as fundamental to human societies, unlike death, within the field of sociology, immortality has not yet established itself as a distinct and autonomous field of study. This paper contributes to the recently emerging scholarship promoting a sociology of immortality. Drawing inspiration from C. Wright Mills’s sociological imagination (1959) and building upon significant research in the field of immortality, we offer to use the concept of the immortological imagination as an analytical and conceptual tool for further developing a sociology of immortality. We refer to the immortological imagination as a complementary concept to Penfold-Mounce’s thanatological imagination, seeing both concepts as stemming from two different lineages and academic traditions. After defining the immortological imagination and how it differs from and complements the thanatological imagination, the paper moves to discuss examples in popular culture establishing the potential impacts and influences of the immortological imagination, particularly within the digital context.

This paper has three critical purposes. Firstly, to describe the content and activities presented by the @Sociology_Perspective Instagram account as an attempt to enrich our understanding of sociology. Secondly, to explain the shape of the Instagram account strategy for building sociological imagination. Thirdly, to illustrate the sociological analysis of learning sociology based on the Instagram platform using Wright C Mills' thinking about sociological imagining. A qualitative approach with case study methods was used for research, and data was collected through observations, in-depth interviews, and online documentation. The results of this paper show that the @Sociology_Perspective Instagram account has a variety of content and activities consisting of writing spaces, discussions, and information activities that improve sociological understanding, academic and soft skills, and critical thinking. In the context of sociology learning, such an increased capacity makes sociology a fascinating and easier-to-understand discipline with popular learning formats. The various content and activities on the @Sociology_Perspective Instagram platform are part of building sociological imagination that helps students link situations and social structures with their personal experiences. This process also trains and stimulates students to reflect on the social world with sociological concepts

The article examines Russian sociology as a whole and in one particular Russian region (the Ural) through the lens of several scientific approaches. The situation in modern Russian sociology is described as a crisis, and the science itself is in need of a new revival. The Great Sociological Ural is considered as an object of research. The subject of research is the main scientific approaches towards studying sociology in the region. Of special interest is the interpretation of the generational approach, which is considered as a tool for analyzing sociology in the region. The purpose of the article is to present the resurgence process, the formation and development of sociology in the region as a subject of research in the mirror of a number of scientific approaches with an emphasis on generational analysis. The author’s theoretical framework is based on the concept of generations in B.Z. Doktorov’s sociology, including his “ladder of generations”. A generational stratification of the sociological community in the Ural is provided, including seven generations — from the moment of the resurgence of sociology in the Ural (during late 1950’s – 1960’s) up to the present day. A characteristic for each of them is provided. The author’s methodology and methods of empirical research are shown. The main methods used were in-depth interviews, the biographical method, as well as the document research method.

The aim of this article is to examine the successfulness of death metaphors in the contemporary debate over the Secularisation Theory. Through doing so, the article will propose criteria by which the success of a metaphor – in the sociology of religion and in social science more broadly – can be assessed. It will examine metaphors employed by Stark, Bruce and Callum Brown. It will firstly discuss the nature of the Secularisation debate, metaphor and metaphor in sociology and science more broadly. Then, drawing upon previous research in this area, it will discuss the use of metaphor and analogy in academic discourse and examine criteria by which the success of scientific metaphors might be assessed. Thereafter, it will look at the successfulness of the main recent metaphors employed by proponents and critics of secularisation in terms of these criteria.

The human body has become a central focus in sociology. Such work has centred largely on the human body and its significance in social contexts. This article draws on sociological understandings of human embodiment, especially the idea of the ‘body as a project’, to facilitate a multi-species understanding of bodies and their entanglements. Conceptualising the body as a project has provided sociological insights into the scientific and technological innovations that are designed to improve health and delay death. Nonhuman animals are entangled in these efforts, though their presence is often occluded. By examining notions of body masks, body regimes and body options, which are well established in sociological thinking about the body, this article seeks to prompt consideration of how to utilise theories of the body to examine human–nonhuman animal entanglements in order to establish a multi-species sociology of the body.

Despite the interest in the death penalty, no statistical studies have isolated the social and political forces that account for the legality of this punishment. Racial or ethnic threat theories suggest that the death penalty will more likely be legal in jurisdictions with relatively large black or Hispanic populations. Economic threat explanations suggest that this punishment will be present in unequal areas. Jurisdictions with a more conservative public or a stronger law-and-order Republican party should be more likely to legalize the death penalty as well. After controlling for social disorganization, region, period, and violent crime, panel analyses suggest that minority presence and economic inequality enhance the likelihood of a legal death penalty. Conservative values and Republican strength in the legislature have equivalent effects. A supplemental time-to-event analysis supports these conclusions. The results suggest that a political approach has explanatory power because threat effects expressed through politics and effects that are directly political invariably account for decisions about the legality of capital punishment.

In Arab universities, sociologists rarely discuss the sociology of death. By studying social and cultural variables along with subjective and objective meanings of death, this paper contributes to filling this gap in research on death in a Sudanese urban area. Furthermore, the study examines the relationship between the burial of the dead and the time and place of their burial, social status, relatives, and religious affiliation as they relate to their burial. A major objective of the research is to explore the social and cultural dimensions of death in Sudanese communities. Data were collected using interviews and observations in the field using the descriptive method. Death is more of a social than a biological fact; therefore, the general findings of this research are about declaration of death, and what it implies about social cohesion. Burial and social acts following death are acts that express social meanings, and further, indicate how biological death has occurred. Based on variables such as social status, family relationship, and religious affiliation, it can be seen that the deceased person and/or family holds these beliefs.

He most certainly can be regarded as a man of different eras with rich and diverse life experience. Early on in his career he held high-ranking management positions, and he would later go on to conduct complex scientific and organizational operations in the field of sociology. His research covered various strata, states of mass consciousness, the history of sociology, and in more recent years — social history. Boris Firsov is responsible for establishing the Sociology institute of the RAS, he was the founder and first rector of the European University at St. Petersburg. He was frequently mentioned by his colleagues in their writing, and in the year 2021 a book by V. Vyzhutovich titled “Boris Firsov” came out as part of the “Life of remarkable people. Biography continues” book series. The author of this article had been a friend and colleague of Firsov for half a century, and as such is in a position to detail certain aspects about the life of Mr. Firsov and his scientific research that are not well known to the public. The article goes into B. Firsov’s involvement in the world of theater: his significant contribution to putting together a play called “Springtime at the LETI” [Leningrad Electro-Technical Institute] (1953) which was an early symbol of the political thaw; the script he wrote for a play called “The Death of Vazir-Mukhtar” (1969) that never got to be shown on television and was based on a novel by Yuri Tynyanov; him participating in a one-of-a-kind project known as “Sociology and theater” (1973–1989).

This article presents a creative direction for public sociology: novel writing. Narrativity is embedded within much contemporary sociological work, and sociologists and novelists share a number of complementary approaches for understanding and interpreting the social world. This article argues that novel writing presents sociologists with a process and medium through which they can expand their work for a more public, engaging, affective, and panoramic sociology. Here, the historical development of sociological thought is considered as well as the recent progress of public sociology. Three key strengths of sociological novels are presented: promoting public sociology and interlocutor engagement; transforming knowledge exchange from mimetic to sympractic communication; and addressing issues of scope. Two recent sociological novels are discussed: Blue by Patricia Leavy and On The Cusp by David Buckingham, both published in 2015. Finally, two linked aspects for (thinking about) writing sociological fiction are explored: the concept of glocality and the methodology of ethnography. Employing creative mediums such as novels as public sociology may cultivate a wider, affective public engagement with significant academic ideas such as the sociological imagination. Sociological novels work to bring the local and global into dialogue, and may help achieve the scope and panoramic depth that sociology requires.

However, due to the Soviet doctrine, the achievements of these scientists had long been out of the Ukrainian community's attention. One of the striking examples is the legacy of Mykyta Shapoval, which is still poorly researched, but in the conditions of today, it requires an in-depth study. After all, the issue of Ukraine's revival is relevant today, so the return of scientific ideas, of those scientists who spoke about national state formation, remains an important component in choosing the right model of nation-building. The main purpose of the article is to outline the historical representation of the sociological ideas of Nikita Shapoval regarding the role of scientific knowledge, the classification of sciences and the place of sociology among them, basic sociological categories (personality, society, state), as well as to outline perspective directions of the study of its sociological heritage. Based on the materials worked out by M. Shapoval, it was found out that at the initial stage of his creative and public-political activity he was a supporter of Nietzschean While in emigration during 1919–1932, M. Shapoval laid a solid foundation for sociological research in Prague, wherein 1924 he opened the Ukrainian Institute of Social Studies (Ukrainian Sociological Institute). Here he publishes the first textbook of national sociology "General Sociology", as well as the monograph "System of Social Sciences and Sociography (Ethnology)". The authors analyze M. Shapoval’s ideas regarding the classification of sciences, the place of sociology in it and its subject field. They also identify the main scientific approaches that he proposed to explain social phenomena and processes.

Critique in the humanities and the social sciences has recently been under attack and even declared lifeless. Considering the report of its death to be an exaggeration but acknowledging that one should never let a good crisis go to waste, I propose a reflection on the challenges faced by the practice of critical thinking in anthropology based on my own research on AIDS in South Africa, trauma among Palestinians, and policing and punishment in France, while resituating the questions it raises in a broader history of the discipline. More specifically, I discuss two major strands, genealogical critique and critical theory, suggesting how they may be combined, and two opposed views, critical sociology and the sociology of critique, showing that ethnography can surmount their supposed irreconcilability. Affirming that critique, under its multiple forms, is inherent to the anthropological project, I contend that it is more than ever needed in times laden with worrying spectres.

Abstract In 2012 social scientists, philosophers and religious scientists celebrated the centennial of the publication of one of the most seminal books in the modern study of religion, Les formes élémentaires de la vie religieuse, by the then leading French sociologist Emile Durkheim’s (1858–1917); in 2017, we commemorated that author’s untimely death at age 59, broken by World War I in which he lost his only son and many of his beloved students. Educated, first as a Rabinnical student then as a modern philosopher, Durkheim earned his place among French thinkers primarily as a “founding father” of the social sciences. Having recently (on the basis of a life-long preoccupation) devoted a book-length study to Durkheim’s religion theory, I intend in this essay to highlight major aspects of Durkheim as an exponent of French thought. I shall first briefly situate Durkheim in his time and age, with special emphasis on his political views and his ethnic identity as a secularised Jew. Then I turn to Durkheim’s relation with the discipline in which he was originally trained, philosophy. I shall pay attention to the complex relationship between Durkheim and Kant and further highlight his dualism, epistemology, and views on primitive classification, as well as his puzzling realism, the place of emergence in his thought, and his moralist tendencies. I shall finally articulate Durkheim’s transition to sociology and how he gave over the torch of emerging sociology to his main students, having thus created an adequate context in which to discuss Durkheim’s final masterpiece (Les formes) and the still dominant theory of religion it expounds.

Twenty years after the death of Pierre Bourdieu, his vast corpus continues to fuel lively debates on an international level. Over the last few years, several scholars have been interested in the link between Bourdieu and the sociology of work and the legacy of his conceptual apparatus for the sociological study of Labor. In 2021, in France, one of his lesser-known books, Travail et travailleurs en Algérie, was republished in an updated version. This critical reading pursues a triple objective: to highlight how, firstly, already in this early phase of his career, Bourdieu began to define some of the methodological and epistemological assumptions of his sociology: the relevance of reflexivity; a methodological approach that combines ethnography and statistics, overcoming the sterile contrast between objectivism and subjectivism; an idea of sociology that crosses the frontiers between the social sciences and disciplinary specializations. Secondly, the analysis of this book allows us to retrace the genesis of the concept of habitus, starting from the influence exercised on Bourdieu by Weber's study on the link between Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism. Finally, the re(reading) of Travail et travailleurs en Algérie consent to describe the substantially positive meaning that Bourdieu attributes to work, as an activity, and even more to employment in contemporary capitalist societies.

This text contains a brief summary of the contents of the monograph and the authors’ reflections on the museum from a sociological and historical perspective based on its text. The work discussed in this review presents the results of a comprehensive analysis of the activities of the Russian Museum (St. Petersburg) over 25 years in its correlation with the broad social and historical context. The monograph also makes an attempt to go beyond classical studies of museum audiences, that come down primarily to constructing a socio-demographic portrait of the visitor and are often limited to it. The monograph under review contains an in-depth analysis of the relationship between the museum and society, not only from the position of the museum itself, which is typical for most museum studies, but also from the point of view of the audience, and, most valuable, from the position of the state. Using the example of a study of visitors to the Russian Museum, V. N. Koziev and E. V. Potyukova seek to identify the influence of changing political and social landscapes on the evolutionary trajectory and mechanisms of functioning of museum institutions in different historical periods. The authors of the review critically examine the methodology underlying the study, but emphasise a number of valuable provisions of the monograph for the social sciences that require further study and development. Noteworthy is the hypothesis put forward in the monograph that the configuration and distribution of artistic capital in society to some extent coincides with the demographic structure of museum visitors, which, although it has a number of limitations, outlines the line of the presented research. Given the noticeable lag in the domestic practice of sociological study of museum audiences and the museum itself as a social institution from the Western body of research practices in the field of museum affairs, the monograph under review deserves close attention from researchers, since it not only answers, but also poses new research questions. Further study of museum practices and museum audiences would make it possible to identify the features and trends in the development of museums in modern Russia in the era of widespread digital technologies and museums searching for their purpose in modern conditions.

The essence of social knowledge of borders and cross-border processes in the socio-humanitarian sciences in general and in sociology in particular has been analyzed in the article. The three stages of formation of knowledge about these phenomena and processes have been distinguished on this basis. Particular attention has been paid to the characteristics of the third stage, when interdisciplinary researches become dominant in social cognition due to the leading role of sociology. The special role of the sociology in the cognitive process, its possibilities in conducting theoretic, methodological and empirical studies has been determined. The necessity of constituting a separate direction - «sociology of borders and cross-border processes» as a medium-level sociological theory has been emphasized. Cross-border processes exist since there are boundaries. They may be limited by one or another part of states’ territories, but also they may cover all their depth. The purpose of boundaries’ establishing is to protect the state’s resource potential (human and natural). The purpose of their violation is to capture this potential. The large-scale violation of the border is the war of one country, which is accompanied by various human losses. The conducted analysis shows that the boundaries are a historical product that appeared at that stage of society’s development, when it became necessary to regulate the spatial existence of private property institutions and the existence of the state. Together with changes in these institutions’ development needs, the relevant cross-border processes are taking place in the space. That’s why, there are no unchanged borders. The exceptional significance of the sociological version of the system methodology being the methodological platform for interdisciplinary studies of cross-boundary processes and phenomena has been grounded.

Is there still a role for discourse research today, some 30 years after Michel Foucault’s death? A decade ago, French actor-network theorist Bruno Latour famously declared the end of critique as ethos and practice in the social sciences. What is more, arguments made about the contingency of historical phenomena even arm “enemy” forces. Empirical work therefore should be replaced by a politics of “matters of concern.” French sociologist Luc Boltanski added to this critique of critical perspectives by suggesting that an investigation into social modes of critique should replace critical sociology. The present contribution discusses both critiques of critique and the problems and limitations of the solutions proposed by both Latour and Boltanski. Against this background, and with a focus on discourse research, it stresses the ongoing need for precise empirical work as a condition for the social unfolding of critical perspectives.

Sociology of Sport Diagnosis in Brazil: to Consolidate a Field of KnowledgeConsidering the expansion process which the sport sociology is facing in the Social Sciences and Physical Education fields, this study highlights the need to attribute to a specific area of knowledge a diagnosis treatment and the discussion of the sociological matters and conceptions emerging in sport. Also we included in this scenario the preliminary need detected in studies focused on the diagnosis of sport sociology in Brazil. The main goal of this research consists in the diagnosis of the papers that make reference to the sport sociology and to verify the consolidation, in the undergraduate and postgraduate area of this research field in Brazil. Specifically, we aim to localize the authors, their production, theoretical references and analysis models to codify a theoretical and methodological classification of the area, identifying conceptions, perspectives and study objects. We also attempt to make possible the structuring of an Excellence Centre in Sport Sociology studies in Brazil and the possible institutional exchange with Portuguese and Spanishspeaking countries, in Latin America. Part of this project is being accomplished by the creation of the Asociación Latinoamericana de Estudios Socioculturales Del Deporte - ALESDE. The methodology selected is a historic-descriptive research with an analytical-bibliographical character. The scope to this diagnosis will depend on the initial contacts with the productions, however we estimate a possible starting point in the 1950s. Through a preliminary study, we realized the mapping of two journals, one from Sociology and another from Physical Education, collecting data of the papers, such as: authors, theoretical approach, study objects and productions profile, from 1997 to 2007. As the results to this specific research we pointed out the absence of papers published in the Social Sciences journal. This may be the result of disputes and tensions of the academic field, considering issues as research legitimacy, prestige, and the superficiality of the papers submitted for publication, that does not attend the criteria of the referred journal. In the Physical Education journal the sport is a study object with insert, fact confirmed by the number of papers published. However, we noticed a large number of issues of this journal without any publication from Sport Sociology, which can be a symptom of a field in a consolidation process. Based on these indicatives we noticed that the papers we analyzed indicate a lack of a proper appropriation of the sociological theories to discuss, with the proper depth, the study object. These data allow us to elaborate a conception of the Sport Sociology as a field seeking its consolidation and autonomy in Sociology and in Physical Education. By this preliminary study and the wider research we present in this paper, we expect to fill a visible gap in the Sport Sociology studies and contribute in the consolidation of this research field.

ABSTRACTResearchers in the fields of biology, religious studies, history, medical ethics, philosophy, and sociology offer a popularized interpretation of “what is death and dying.” This book is divided into three sections, each beginning with a relevant discussion on the contexts of the issue of death and dying. The work proposes three insights into the subject. First, the image of “the dead and the living,” as presented in art history, is revisited through the genetics and biology discourses that have recently challenged the traditional concepts of aging, as well as the very definition of “clinical” death. Second, the “experience of death” is based on new ideologies that reassess the solitude and individualistic nature of the dying and the necessity of reestablishing the links between the dying and the living, as reiterating the cultural norm. Finally, the “good death” establishes a virtual breach between two types of mythical figures – the heroes and the saints – and the relational singularity of palliative care.

Objectives: In this study, the problems, attitudes and behaviors of diabetic foot patients were examined and evaluated in terms of sociology and management science. Diabetic foot disease is a serious chronic disease with a difficult life-supply process for sick individuals and a high cost for the family and society. The financial burden of these costs on the national health system and the family of the individual is quite high. It has been observed that there is no subjective study in the examination of national and international resources on the management of these costs. One of the most frightening complications in diabetic foot disease is amputation. Method: Diabetic foot diseases cause many negativities in the life processes of sick individuals and reduce the individual's potential to adapt to social and cultural life. This process will be a chaotic life cycle for the patient and his family. This situation, the thought of a tragic future, puts him and his family in a spiral of economic and psychological problems. The patient is exposed to psychological, pathological and sociological problems through this process. It is possible to state that there are universal principles of health management for ethnic and cultural formations living in the world (Kızılçelik, 1996:69). In this context, sociology of health examines people's attitudes and behaviors against diseases, socio-cultural and economic reasons of patients. It deals with the social class relations with the disease, demographic structure, many factors such as poverty, divorce, unemployment and death, and the relations with the relatives of the patients (Kızılçelik, 1996:70). Result: Sociology explores the meanings and causes behind human behavior. Health sociology, on the other hand, analyzes the relationship between the socio-cultural life of people and the disease, the response to diseases and health policies. The concepts of illness and health are closely related to the society in which people live. In this study, it was aimed to bring the life cycle of diabetic foot patients to a livable state and to increase their quality of life. Preventive health practices and developments in public health are important in the development of health sociology. The solution of the problems of diabetic foot diseases should be considered together within the framework of sociology and management science.

Kyiv: Institute of Sociology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 2020. 120p. ISBN 978-966-02-9424-0. The authors of the report set themselves a goal: to give the most complete and holistic picture of the processes taking place today in Ukraine in the context of global social changes in a concise form, in order not only to convey their conclusions to the scientific community, but also to inform the general public and the authorities about the real situation in the country. And the real situation, according to the authors of the report, "threatens the ability of our state to reproduce its sovereignty and ensure the preservation of the country's territorial integrity". The impression after reading the report is such that it is still putting it gently about threats! Not even gently, but veiled. Indeed, the words about Ukraine's inability to reproduce its sovereignty and ensure the preservation of the country's territorial integrity are a euphemism for stating Ukraine's dying, sliding towards ruin, towards death. And not because Russia or some other state will dismember it, but because the state's economy is withering, the social sphere is deteriorating, the population is becoming impoverished, young people are leaving to live abroad, and, ultimately, Ukraine is dying.

Before Freud, the study of death belonged strictly in the contexts of religion and philosophy, but in the 20th Century, death and dying began to enter into dialogue with the social sciences of psychology and sociology. The existentialists began to portray death differently in their literary-based philosophy, and by the end of the century four major American writers had dealt squarely with death in a theological framework. The author's own personal experiences and academic endeavors frame this evolution in theories about death and dying, beginning with a Master's thesis in college and ending with a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education in a shock trauma hospital. In this article the mystery of death is examined from three distinct points of view: literary (including existentialism, a philosophy as literature), theological and psychological, based upon the author's career as a professor of literature, as seminary student, and as a recent participant in Clinical Pastoral Education. An attempt at a synthesis of these three strands of inquiry is made at the end of this personal and academic journey.

The focus of this article is the character of ethnomethodology and its relation to mainstream sociology, specifically as regards assumptions about the nature of social phenomena and the attitude that ought to be adopted towards these. This issue is explored mainly through the example of suicide, which has been used by some ethnomethodologists to highlight the distinctiveness of their position. The viability of three interpretations of ethnomethodology is assessed: as being agnostic regarding the ontological status of suicide and other social phenomena, as insisting that such phenomena are entirely constituted in and through processes of social interaction on particular occasions, and as itself constituting the world as one in which social phenomena are occasioned products. It is argued that none of these is sustainable, but that the plausibility of the second varies somewhat across different types of phenomena, with money being even more evidently constituted through ongoing social interaction than is suicide or death.

Lucian of Samosata (circa 120-200) may be primarily envisioned as a poet-philosopher from the classical Roman era. However, the material he develops on religion not only anticipates important aspects of contemporary pragmatist/constructionist approaches to the sociology of religion but also provides some particularly compelling insights into religion as a humanly engaged realm of reality. Following an introduction to a pragmatist approach to the study of religion, this paper presents a synoptic overview of several of Lucian’s texts on religion. In addition to the significance of Lucian’s materials for comprehending an era of Roman and Greek civilization, as well as their more general sources of intellectual and aesthetic stimulation, these texts also provide an array of valuable transhistorical reference points and alert scholars in the field of religion to some ways in which the study of religion could be more authentically approached within the social sciences. The paper concludes with a consideration of the affinities of Lucian’s depictions of religion with pragmatist, interactionist, and associated approaches as this pertains to the study of religion as a realm of human involvement.

Environmental expertise is namely about group belonging and professional socialization around specialized skills; that is, it concerns both substantial competence and social recognition. The implications of this general view on expertise are then used to enrich theories in environmental sociology.

It is the story of the life of my mother, who suffered with MS for 9 years and the story of my sister and myself, who cared for her throughout our childhood up to her death in 2000. The rupture in identity that we suffered interrupted the world in which we lived and exposed the contents of our individual and collective world(s). The themes that emerged from the narratives in this study suggest rupture is experienced as a movement of transgression that leads to movements of regression and progression.
