Streszczenie:
Introduction. The social integration of complex technologies is constantly accompanied by the mythologization of innovations and the creation of special discourses that function on the basis of secondary semiotic systems. Traditionally, the trend is associated with philistine (user) discursive practices. The hypothesis of the study is that mythologization is a complex process that takes place not only within the boundaries of non-professional communities, but also in the scientific world. Theoretical analysis. The technological mythology originated in the West in the context of the social sciences and has a predominantly empirical research background. Today several variations of the conceptualization of mythology in relation to technologies have been developed, which need to be significantly supplemented and refined. Empirical analysis. The general research method is the content analysis of the Scopus scientific database in the field of social sciences. The focus was on the topic of artificial intelligence as the main convergent technology. The reference base includes scientific papers for the decade (2010–2020), united by the theme, the subject and keywords. Conclusion. Research practices in the field of artificial intelligence have almost 60 years of history, which allows us to compare the results of analytics in the future, identify genetic patterns and features of scientific discourse, contrast the results of the analysis of Western content and Russian one, by identifying key discursive specifications.

Theoretical Conceptions in Sport Social SciencesIn the presented study we assume, after Piotr Sztompka that a sociological theory is every set of ontological, epistemological and methodological assumptions, abstract notions and general propositions concerning social reality which is to provide with explanation of existing descriptive knowledge about it and orient future research (Sztompka 1985, p. 12). In the discussed theory there have developed hitherto the following orientations: the systemic-functional one, the ethnomethodological one, symbolic interactionism, theory of conflict, socio-historical theory and positivist theory. They have together shaped theoretical conceptions in sociology of sport and — indirectly — in other social physical culture sciences.Interpreting the issue in a prospective way, it can be assumed that in the future there will appear other theories, such as the theory of behaviour, the theory of rational choice, the sociobiological theory, the theory of power, the theory of neo-institutionalism and others.Sociology, however, need not to be the only source of inspiration for sociohumane sports sciences. An equally important role can be played there by philosophy and psychology. Moreover, that thesis can be referred to other humanities, especially to history and pedagogy, as well as to philosophical, sociological and pedagogical versions of theory of physical culture — or to multidisciplinary theories, as e.g. postmodernist and globalist ones.

The article presents a review of the research on green hydrogen from the social sciences, identifying its main lines of research, its problems, and the relevant challenges due to the benefits and impacts that this energy vector has on energy transitions and climate change. The review analyzes a corpus of 78 articles indexed in the Web of Science (WoS) and SCOPUS, published between 1997 and 2022. The review identified three research areas related to green hydrogen and the challenges for the social sciences in the future: (a) risks, socio-environmental impacts, and public perception; (b) public policies and regulation and (c) social acceptance and willingness to use associated technologies. Our results show that Europe and Asia lead the research on green hydrogen from the social sciences. Also, most of the works focus on the area of public policy and regulation and social acceptance. Instead, the field of social perception of risk is much less developed. We found that little research from the social sciences has focused on assessments of the social and environmental impacts of hydrogen on local communities and indigenous groups, as well as the participation of local authorities in rural locations. Likewise, there are few integrated studies (technical and social) that would allow a better assessment of hydrogen and cleaner energy transitions. Finally, the lack of familiarity with this technology in many cases constitutes a limitation when evaluating its acceptance.

This article presents a reflection on the challenges and opportunities associated with the now ubiquitous requests inviting social scientists to participate in ELSI (Ethical, Legal and Social Implications) type frameworks, attached to large science projects such as nanotechnoscience. It elaborates on some ideas presented in a panel discussion titled "On the Social and Ethical Impacts of Nanotechnology" in Winnipeg at the Canadian Sociological and Anthropological Association (CSAA) annual meeting in the spring of 2004. This was the first panel session devoted to nanotechnology in the CSAA. I begin by briefly developing some key ideas from the field of social studies of science in order to draw attention to the fact that scientific activity has always required the mobilisation of a variety of social, political, cultural and economic resources. Nanotechnoscience is no different. What is distinctive, however, is the perceived need to enrol the social sciences in ELSI-type programs as a way securing legitimacy and to contribute to the overall success of these initiatives. I suggest that it is important to attend to the types of discursive spaces and objects of knowledge that are opened up to the social sciences in these ELSI frameworks. In light of work in science studies, the notion that the social implications of the technology can be grasped by simply projecting current trends into the future has to be problematised and treated with great care. I conclude by suggesting that sociology and anthropology's most important contribution might lie not in contributing to the illusion of predictability and control, which nanotechnoscience is currently attempting to foster as a way of securing social, political, ethical and economic legitimacy for its endeavour, but in short-circuiting these processes.

This article presents the almost century-long history of the development of futures studies in a comprehensive review. Futures studies, rooted in sociology and policy sciences, had become an academic discipline by the 1960s. One of the major global communities representing the discipline, the World Futures Studies Federation (WFSF), celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023. In the 1970s, the focus was placed on discourses on global problems and preferred futures. Futures studies then developed a global institutional community and become a mature discipline by the 1980s and 1990s. Futurists by then had already mutually shared theoretical perspectives, objectives, ethics, and methods, and had produced empirical results. A wide range of comprehensive publications at that time synthesized the foundations and preceding results of futures studies. From the turn of the millennium, active discourse took place on the forthcoming role of futures studies. By that time, the theoretical, methodological, and practical knowledge foundations of the discipline had also appeared in internationally well-documented curricula. Since around 2010, the discipline has been characterized by the development of practical foresight projects. Based on notable trends and identified research gaps, this article formulates up-to-date expectations and research directions within which futures studies might develop in the future.

Abstract New national and international societies that examine sports have been created and developed in Europe as well as on other continents. These societies, which examine the complex phenomena, issues, and questions concerning sports as seen from the different scientific points of view, are rooted in two main research directions: the natural sciences on the one hand, and the social sciences on the other. The authors of the paper point to the significant and ongoing development of the social sciences of sport. In particular, the authors discuss the development of the sociology of sport, philosophy of sport, psychology of sport, pedagogy of sport, history of physical culture, sports and Olympics, the organization and management of sport, social and cultural foundations of tourism and recreation, social relationships associated with sports training and tactics, as well as the humanistic theories of Eastern martial arts. The authors have listed several national, continental, and international scientific organizations that unite representatives of the aforementioned disciplines. However, the authors’ main focus is on theoretical and organizational assumptions of the International Society for the Social Sciences of Sport, an organization founded in 2009.The society’s main objectives are to unite the particular social sciences of sport in one organized and scientific body (while maintaining the existing differences between the sciences); to enable the annual debate and exchange of views on the substantive and methodological matters; as well as to provide joint scientific publications connected with common work of the group and with the journal Physical Culture and Sport. Studies and Research. The authors discuss the research and publishing activities of the Polish Society for Social Sciences of Sport, introducing the organization as an example of any future organization that could cooperate with the International Society for the Social Sciences of Sport.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the understanding of altmetrics in different disciplines of social science: first, by investigating the current richness and future potential of altmetrics in the selected social science disciplines and then by evaluating the validity of altmetrics as indicators of research impact in each discipline through correlation analysis. Design/methodology/approach This study uses three approaches to understand the current richness and future potential of ten altmetric measures in nine selected disciplines: first, investigate the distribution and trend of altmetric data; second, verify the relationship between citation rate and altmetric presence of the discipline using Pearson correlation; and third, perform word frequency analysis on tweets to understand different altmetric presence in different disciplines. In addition, this study uses Spearman and sign test to find the correlation between altmetrics and citation counts for the articles that receive altmetric mention(s) to test the validity of altmetrics as indicators of research impact. Findings There is a steady increase in the number of articles that receive altmetric mentions in all disciplines studied. In general, disciplines with higher citation rates have higher altmetric presence. At the same time, altmetrics are also an effective complement to citation in disciplines with low citation rates. There is a moderate correlation with Mendeley and significant but weak correlations with Tweets and CiteULike in seven disciplines. Altmetrics appear effective as a predictor of citation counts in seven out of nine disciplines studied. However, there is low presence and lack of correlation with citation count in business-finance and law disciplines. Originality/value This paper furthers the understanding of altmetrics in social science disciplines. It reveals the disciplines where altmetrics are most effective, potentially useful, and fairly applicable. In addition, it presents evidence that altmetrics are an effective complement to citation in disciplines with low citation rates.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present the three guiding ideas of the social foresight course, namely, the difference between abstract and concrete futures (i.e. the difference between risk and uncertainty); the three levels of futures studies (forecast, foresight and anticipation); and an overview of the early signs of the incipient shift of human and social sciences from their so-far predominant past-orientation to a new, still unfolding, future-orientation. Design/methodology/approach – This paper is a reconstruction of the guiding ideas that have been used for designing the social foresight course. Findings – As far as anticipation is concerned, the authors’ understanding of anticipation is still cursory, and the novelty of the perspective may conceal the difficulty implied by this otherwise refreshingly new vision. The theory is at such an early phase of development that it still lacks a unified conceptual language for theorizing and operationalizing anticipation to facilitate cross-disciplinary conversations. Originality/value – The ability to anticipate in complex environments may improve the resilience of societies under threat from a global proliferation of agents and forces by articulating insecurities through anticipatory processes. However, to achieve this end, the joint expertise and theoretical awareness of both the futurists and the human and social scientists is needed.

The field of social sciences has become increasingly important in eHealth. Patients currently engage more proactively with health services. This means that eHealth is linked to many different areas of Social Sciences. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the state-of-the-art research on eHealth from the perspective of social sciences. To this end, a bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Web of Science database. The main findings show the evolution of publications, the most influential countries, the most relevant journals and papers, and the importance of the different areas of knowledge. Although there are some studies on eHealth within social sciences, most of them focus on very specific aspects and do not develop a holistic analysis. Thus, this paper contributes to academia by analyzing the state-of-the-art of research, as well as identifying the most relevant trends and proposing future lines of research such as the potential of eHealth as a professional training instrument, development of predictive models in eHealth, analysis of the eHealth technology acceptance model (TAM), efficient integration of eHealth within public systems, efficient budget management, or improvement in the quality of service for patients.

The article interprets and systematizes the idea of monitoring as a research method in the field of social communication sciences for the solution of traditional issues of journalism science and outlines the prospects of its application in view of the current issues of media science, which introduce into the research field the latest trends in the development of the mass media system at the current stage of deployment information society. The scientific value of monitoring as a research method is inseparable from its ability to see mass media as a complex heterogeneous system object and to ensure systematicity (complexity of vision, comparability of data, consistency of aspects of object analysis) of observations of this object at its different levels and in different sections. It is also important to be aware of the need to see the background as a theoretical basis for interpreting monitoring data. Self-sufficient, self-valued empirical monitoring studies of mass media activity can be good material for larger research projects, which demonstrates the high research potential of the monitoring method. Monitoring studies of mass media is the accumulation of empirical material for large-scale research projects in the field of social communications of both synchronic and diachronic type. However, only qualitative data from monitoring studies can be adequately used in the future and productively included in large-scale scientific projects, where comparison of data, combination of disparate empirical material with other analytical data is expected. Monitoring studies of mass media is a perspective of using the accumulation of empirical material for media critical studies and providing recommendations and practical advice for the implementation of mass media activities of editorial teams. This is the potential of monitoring research in the aspect of management decisions in the mass media system. The latest media phenomena that are of research interest, but have not yet entered the science of social communications as an object and subject of scientific understanding, with clearly defined parameters, are probably promising material for monitoring observations. This is a question of understanding the potential of the monitoring method in its application to the newest media phenomena that are significantly transforming the sphere of mass communication activity. Among the media phenomena that can become material for monitoring studies, the author of the article sees, first of all, such notable and influential phenomena as constructive journalism (journalism of solutions) and brand journalism. Monitoring provides an opportunity to verify, through the observation of extensive empirical material, the theoretical statements of scientists regarding the requirements for constructive journalism and brand journalism, which are formulated on the basis of the construction of a conceptual model of this type of mass media work. Thanks to monitoring, it is possible to study constructive journalism and brand journalism in terms of their use of forms of information submission, the specifics of addressing narrow target segments of the mass audience, technologies for retaining the recipient’s attention, etc. The data obtained during the monitoring can be used in a comparative study in the future, which can significantly expand the understanding of modern science about the latest media phenomena, which are still difficult to fit into the limits of scientific interpretations. If we see the latest trends and phenomena in the mass communication environment as indicators of transformations and look for factors of significant changes and shifts in social communication activity, then monitoring as a research method can be extremely useful and promising in understanding changes in the mass media system.

The development of the social sciences needs to rely on precise methods. The nomological model of explanation adopted in the natural sciences is ill-suited for the social sciences. An algorithmic model of society can be a promising solution to existing problems. In its most general form, an algorithm is a generally understood prescription for what actions to perform and in what order to achieve the desired result. Any algorithm can be represented as a set of rules of the form «If A, do D to get P». People are the bearers of this kind of rules that apply in different areas of their activities. The rules are subject to change based on personal and collective experience. There is a special mathematical discipline that studies the laws of evolution of such rules. This discipline is called genetic (evolutionary) programming. Contrary to the threatening name, the algorithmic model does not imply the deprivation of a person’s right to free choice, but it needs this right as a necessary condition for the evolution of social algorithms. These algorithms allow us to give a non-causal, but law-like explanation of many well-known social phenomena, as well as to effectively model the future, which is critically important today. A retrospective look at the evolution of social algorithms shows that the current global crisis of human society is associated with the approach to the point of singularity in their evolution. This is due to the fact that there is no need for direct human participation in the implementation of social algorithms, which is reflected in a fundamental change in the sphere of employment and less need for further development of the sciences.

In this article I argue that the shift from a private to a public–social understanding of religion raises new ontological and epistemological questions for the scientific study of religion\s. These questions are deeply related to three central features of the emic–etic debate, namely the problems of intentionality, objectivity, and comparison. Focusing on these interrelated issues, I discuss the potential of John Searle’s philosophy of society for the scientific study of religion\s. Considering the role of intentionality at the social level, I present Searle’s concept of “social ontology” and discuss its epistemological implications. To clarify Searle’s position regarding the objectivity of the social sciences, I propose a heuristic model contrasting different stances within the scientific study of religion\s. Finally, I explore some problematic aspects of Searle’s views for a comparative study of religion\s, and sketch a solution within his framework. I shall argue that a distinction between the epistemological and ontological dimensions of religious affairs would help clarify the issues at stake in the past and future of the emic–etic debate.

The Disaster Research Center (DRC) at the University of Delaware, with the financial support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the College of Arts and Sciences, held a two-day conference titled “Disaster Research in the Social Sciences: Lessons Learned, Challenges, and Future Trajectories.” The conference highlighted the interdisciplinary and international nature of the disaster research field and focused on: 1) the growth and development of the field of disasters, from the perspective of the Social Sciences; 2) theoretical, methodological, and public policy contributions of the field; 3) lessons learned and best practices that have emerged from this area of research; and 4) future trajectories or opportunities for Social Science research in the study of disasters. Conference participants included leading scholars and researchers, practitioners, representatives from funding organizations, and graduate and undergraduate students. The conference allowed participants to discuss substantive, theoretical, and methodological issues and concerns relevant to the field as well as to generate new research initiatives that will contribute to our understanding and knowledge regarding the study of disasters. Substantive and critical issues discussed during this two-day conference included: the growth and development of disaster research in the Social Sciences; theoretical and methodological contributions and challenges in disaster research; impact of disaster research for practitioners; the role and importance of multi- and inter-disciplinary research in the disaster field; the development of an international research agenda; the role of research centers in training the new generation of researchers; funding disaster research and priorities for the future in a post-9/11 environment; major research areas and issues that need to be developed and explored over the next decade at both the national and international level; and efforts to establish collaborative research initiatives across disciplines and geographical boundaries. DRC was the first Social Science research center in the world devoted to the study of disasters, so it was appropriate and timely that a conference of such magnitude was held at the University of Delaware at a particularly historical moment for the DRC and the field of disaster studies. This conference not only provided a stimulating intellectual environment but it also presented an opportunity to celebrate DRC's 40 th anniversary and to examine the impact and contributions of the Center to the field of disaster research both nationally and internationally. Moreover, during the two-day event, conference participants had an opportunity to pay tribute to Enrico L. Quarantelli and Russell R. Dynes, two of the founding fathers of DRC and disaster research from a social science perspective.

This paper makes a theoretical contribution by presenting a detailed derivation of a zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) model, and then deriving the parameters of the ZIP model using a fishing data set. This model has several practical applications, and is largely performed to model count data that have an excess number of zero counts. In the scope of the paper, we introduce the complete formulae, the likelihood and log-likelihood functions and the estimating equation of the ZIP model. We then investigate the theory of large sample properties of this model under some regularity conditions. A simulation study and a fishing data set are studied for the ZIP model. The results in the actual application in this work are meaningful, useful and crucial in reality. The results also provide reliable evidence for obtaining the largest number of fish while fishing. This is the contribution of this research in terms of applications. Finally, the important applications of this model in practice, some conclusions, and future work is also presented for consideration.

Purpose: This paper discusses convergence education and future education perspectives of computing and algorithms applied to humanistic and social sciences with artificial intelligence. These algorithms are referred to as social algorithms. Methods: This paper considers the social scientific implications of social algorithms from an educational perspective, examining the issues and topics associated with the use of these algorithms for educational practices. Results: This discussion of social algorithms explicitly focuses on examples and case studies of educational practices rather than on theory and techniques. As specific issues for exploring the potential of social algorithms, this paper proposes social algorithm development processes, deductive-inductive approaches to social model building, and geospatial algorithms. It also suggests a more comprehensive list of geospatial data research topics for educational practices associated with social computing, including collective intelligence, community mapping, digital mapping content (i.e. Google Earth), evolutionary algorithms, and digital literacy of geospatial data. Conclusion: Some significant findings are highlighted along with ways that these can be infused with work on social algorithms and computing.

(1) Background: International crisis situations (social, economic, health and education) need solutions. These situations need high doses of social responsibility among the population. In the educational field, different studies express that training future teachers in “Social Responsibility”, from ethics and social commitment; provides social justice and welfare in citizens. (2) Methods: This study developed a quantitative methodology; non-experimental and descriptive type. The research sample was university students registered in the Education Sciences degrees of different Spanish universities. The statistical analysis has been carried out with the SPSS software version 25 for Windows. (3) Results: The results express that the competence for social responsibility should be established in the university environment through training (university studies) contributing to the increase in the degree of social responsibility of the university student to face the changes of society (socially committed professional). (4) Conclusion: Social responsibility and university training should be key in the theoretical-practical and professional exercise of future teachers, since the quality and improvement of education will be determined by the real promotion of social responsibility as a basic competence in the curriculum of future teachers.

Conditions of living and evolved human social traits undermine human adaptations to genetic, personal, social, and physical environments. The objectives of this study were as follows: first, to identify the functionality of evolutionary impediments to human health, well-being, happiness, and survival, and second, to understand the role, potentials, rationale, methods, structures, and implementation of possible responses by social psychiatry. The author surveyed the background mission development of Hippocratic medicine to identify the ranges of responsibility historically available to social psychiatry research, training, and practice addressing the conditions of living left by evolution for Homo sapiens. Topics examined for relevance included a history of Hippocratic medicine, evolutionary biology, primatological studies of human social primates, medical sciences, and psychosocial sciences. The results achieved were: Blind processes of evolution, through natural selection, have left to H. sapiens numerous and wide-ranging specific impediments to effective adaptations to the environments essential to humans flourishing and surviving. Consequently, functioning solely to ensure the survival of live forms across generations, evolution has left individuals without rights and totally responsible for the consequences of how they live. It can be concluded that human evolutionary biology provides a required broad and informative grounding for social psychiatric research and the development of the understanding and interventions required to reverse the effects from evolved conditions and traits affecting human adaptations. Serendipitously, direct democracy may be the sole form of social governance able to functionally accommodate humans’ dynamically unique individuality. Medicine’s formulation as a social intervention by Rudolf Wirchov, where William Osler finds physicians learning the pragmatics of applying scientific knowledge, provides a millennia-long tradition addressing the parson’s and population’s best interests. This may prove an essential grounding for any effective interventions against human-evolved conditions and traits.

This study aims to examine the topic of human trafficking (HT) to outline the definition and typology of HT, stages of HT, research themes, and future research directions in HT studies. This study used a systematic literature method to analyze 229 articles from the social sciences category from the Scopus database. This study found that the definition of HT is complex. Thus, to define HT, scholars need to be specific about the context, characteristics, and typology of trafficking. There are many internal and external factors in mobilizing the victim's choice of victim's immigration into this crime's vortex. Hence, policymakers need to know the critical issues of victim preference in the HT stage. Ultimately, there are three primary themes in the HT topic. They are: (1) developing models and strategies for dealing with more effective ways to combat HT around the world, (2) exploring and further comprehending the social and cultural factors underlying HT in different regions, and (3) capacity-building countries and implementation of more effective policies to protect and assist trafficking victims. Our integrative literature review may be the most recent study to provide detailed information about each research stream of HT literature in the social sciences discipline. The results of our review are limited to HT publications in the social sciences field, which stemmed from Scopus.

The present, first study from Pakistan , adopted quantitative research design based on a pretested questionnaire to collect data from a sample of 221 students of master programs who were studying in their final semesters in five social sciences disciplines under Faculty of Economics and Management Sciences at the University of the Punjab (PU), Pakistan. The key findings revealed that most frequently used tools for relocating information once found are downloads on personal computers, self-created digital document (e.g. MSWord, Excel, Google Docs, etc.), URLs and hyperlinks. URLs are the most commonly used elements to save online information for future use. The revelation of their practices establishes that they need appropriate training regarding their personal information management.

In this article, a review of SE and sport is briefly provided, as well as a presentation of recent critical perspectives on SE. Drawing attention to the connections between SDP and critical studies of SE, I suggest that there is an opportunity for sociologists of SDP to further understand the complex relations and neoliberal power structures involved in SDP social change, sustainability, innovation, and donor-recipient relations that would contribute significant insights for the future of the field.

This study aims to analyze stakeholders’ responses to the YouTube public hearing on social studies curriculum according to the 2022 revised national curriculum in South Korea in order to understand the context and causes of the issues that emerged. Text mining, semantic network analysis and word cloud techniques were employed to identify issues. As a result, three issues were identified in the social studies curriculum: the balanced development of general elective subjects in high school; the separation of social sciences and geography and division of textbooks in middle school social studies and the separate listing of four subjects, specifically geography, social sciences, history and morals. The issues revealed in this study provide beneficial implications for future social studies curriculum development, revision as well as the development of future research.

Purpose: The author of this text shares the opinion (expressed by quite a number of social researches) that the practical impact of social sciences on social practice, and particularly – on mankind’s responding to the global challenges, is not satisfying. Enhancement of this influence can be viewed as one of these challenges. An analysis of the causes of the situation characterized above is required to achieve this goal. Such an analysis is outlined in this text and some its tentative practical implications are indicated. In other words, it could be said that the goal of this paper is to contribute to the debate on the current state of the management studies and management education. Design/methodology/approach: This text belongs to the area where meet the philosophy of social sciences and their history. Thus, this text is based on historical description and on analysis of the described processes. Logical analysis connected with explication of axiological (ethical) assumptions allows to formulate some practical suggestions as to the further development of management studies and the (academic) education of the future managers. Findings: The role of the emerging interdisciplinary theory of collective action – as basis for both research and academic education in practically oriented social sciences – has been exposed and justified in this text. Research limitations/implications: Further historical and analytical studies seem to be necessary. Practical implications: Some changes in the organization (defining research problems, methodologies etc.) of the research practice of social sciences in general, and of management studies in particular, as well as changes in studies programs might be planned and accepted if arguments presented in this paper are at least partly convincing. Social implications: The text, suggesting and inspiring some changes in the education of managers, might also have some indirect impact on the quality of politics, self-government, or civil-society organization. Originality/value: The paper contains an idea of management studies as an interdisciplinary science connecting elements of traditional management theory with sociology, political sciences and economics. The idea, and also its justification, seems to be rather new. The paper is addressed to the representatives of various social sciences interested in interdisciplinary cooperation

As a key sub-field of social dynamics and sociophysics, opinion dynamics utilizes mathematical and physical models and the agent-based computational modeling tools, to investigate the spreading of opinions in a collection of human beings. This research field stems from various disciplines in social sciences, especially the social influence models developed in social psychology and sociology. A multidisciplinary review is given in this paper, attempting to keep track of the historical development of the field and to shed light on its future directions. In the review, the authors discuss the disciplinary origins of opinion dynamics, showing that the combination of the social processes, which are conventionally studied in social sciences, and the analytical and computational tools, which are developed in mathematics, physics and complex system studies, gives birth to the interdisciplinary field of opinion dynamics. The current state of the art of opinion dynamics is then overviewed, with the research progresses on the typical models like the voter model, the Sznajd model, the culture dissemination model, and the bounded confidence model being highlighted. Correspondingly, the future directions of this academic field are envisioned, with an advocation for closer synthesis of the related disciplines.

Literature review is a preparatory work that enables a researcher to take up motivating future research. Literature review often makes a researcher an expert specialist of specific subject. Literature review is not just a report that summaries articles or books but it provides a description, summary as well as the critical evaluation of a scholarly work. The purpose of literature review is to provide background information, to establish importance, to demonstrate reliability and to carve out a space for further addition to research. Review of the literature is very essential and important for the proposed research writing. It’s always helpful for the researcher throughout his research work. Without surveying the relevant literature, no one can identify the research problem. So review of literature is the backbone of the research problem. Most of the other elements of the proposal are related with it. Reviewing the literature provides the guideline to the researcher to complete his proposed research oriented studies. Research is a process of knowing causes and effects of the events. Research is essential to know the fact; because seeing, hearing and feeling may be different than the reality. Knowing from such activities does not have the proof and such knowledge would not be believable to the others. But the knowledge gained from a researcher is proved by evidences and that is believed by others. Such work is known as a scientific research and it provides us reliability, authenticity and validity of the relevant social phenomenon.

This paper discusses the “doing” or practice of social science in the Philippines in the past 400 years where written documents are available during this period. It consists of three parts. First is a discussion of popular perceptions of the social sciences, often disaggregated and with particular stereotypes, e.g., history as “heroes and dates”, geography as “maps”, psychology as “behavior” and anthropology as “(exotic) tribes”. These focused perceptions lead to misconceptions of the social sciences as mainly descriptive pursuits that produce studies that are “nice to know” but which have little impact on society, especially for developing countries. Secondly, a historical survey will show how, in the past 400 years, the practice of social sciences has significantly contributed towards understanding the Philippines, with even greater challenges and potential, in the future for producing insights needed to effectively respond to social concerns. This includes the emergence of social sciences in Europe in the context of the Enlightenment, and its impact on the thinking of social reformers. In the Philippines, this would be exemplified by Jose Rizal and Isabelo de los Reyes with their unrelenting search for a Filipino identity and nationhood. The American colonial period is described in terms of its more formal definition and application of the social sciences for governance, including social engineering with its long-term impact on many aspects of public life. In the postcolonial period, Filipino social scientists followed international trends of separating the social sciences from the natural sciences, as well as arts and humanities, with academic institutions developing discipline-based silos of research. Despite the fragmentation, there have been common themes in the disciplines, particularly in a search for the “indigenous”, taking up in a sense the agenda of Rizal and de los Reyes in the late nineteenth century. Applied social sciences have also become important to better inform development efforts and have allowed greater convergence, and the adoption of inter- and transdisciplinary research.

Starting from two concrete contemporary examples drawn from the Canadian context having to do with smudging and the crucifix, the article argues that the historical form that religion has taken functioned in earlier modern centuries as a way of favourably distributing power to religion’s carriers; but that with the progressive development of secular forms of power, religion has progressively been moving towards become a form that is mostly neutral in terms of social power distribution but can also be a source of power loss, these through interrelated processes of privatization, pluralization, and voluntarization. In current circumstances, therefore, in order for what is or was religious form to preserve or regain its erstwhile function for privileged power distribution, one sees attempts in various instances to dissolve religion into other categories and forms; here the prime instances are (national) culture and (instrumental) spirituality. If this process continues and counter-movements do not succeed, then this points to the progressive deinstitutionalisation of religion in the future, its dissolution into collective culture and personal spirituality, while maintaining its religious form in smaller local and transnational organizations and movements.

Streszczenie:
Many empirical studies throughout the social and biomedical sciences focus only on very narrow outcomes such as income, or a single specific disease state, or a measure of positive affect. Human well-being or flourishing, however, consists in a much broader range of states and outcomes, certainly including mental and physical health, but also encompassing happiness and life satisfaction, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, and close social relationships. The empirical literature from longitudinal, experimental, and quasiexperimental studies is reviewed in attempt to identify major determinants of human flourishing, broadly conceived. Measures of human flourishing are proposed. Discussion is given to the implications of a broader conception of human flourishing, and of the research reviewed, for policy, and for future research in the biomedical and social sciences.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Most of the research on the sociocultural content presented by Olympic hosts centers on single-point analyses of events. Whereas longitudinal analyses have been used to evaluate changes in audiences’ reception and the media portrayal of the content brought by the Olympic Games, few studies have focused on the comparative study of Olympic traditions, promotional materials, and artifacts. Notwithstanding its limited use to date, Longitudinal Olympic Research (LOR) is a valuable tool for comparing different societies and historical periods, being particularly relevant in the assessment of long-term social trends and understanding the role the present plays in the representation of the past. This research note discusses LOR's use to date and suggests possible new avenues for future research, as well as its risks and limitations.

Streszczenie:
Some scholars have underlined network governance issues in theoretical, conceptual, operational, and practical terms. However, it is still requested to core map this issue, as past scholars have lacked attention. Therefore, this paper explores network governance’s pivotal issues and proposes a theoretical model. A systematic literature review was conducted using Scopus database sources, and NVivo 12 Plus software was used as an assistive qualitative data analysis tool. This study revealed several viewpoints. First, network governance has received much attention over the last decade. Second, some essential core key terms are linked to network governance issues, such as social, public, government, policy, actor, political, institutional, and organizational. In addition, we proposed a theoretical model that can be used as a recommendation for future studies.

The only true voyage would be not to travel through a hundred different lands with the same pair of eyes, but to see the same land with a hundred different pairs of eyes.Marcel ProustAlthough it may turn out to be otherwise, this is an early article in what is hoped to be a larger series of studies in the application of network methods to historical problems. This article explores some new solutions to old problems in historical social science and history more generally and provides some templates for thinking about an old problem in a new light. The old problem is the problem that arises when one considers how we know what historical events mean and how we can have confidence in our interpretations. For many social science historians, the problem of meaning is secondary to the problem of making causal arguments. And often the practical reality of much historical work is that more mundane problems of data and evidence often consume an unusual amount of time and energy, drawing attention away from the luxurious concerns discussed in this article — concerns with what things actually mean. Despite the recognition that the problem of meaning may not lurk around every corner for all social science historians, the goal of this article is to propose some new strategies for determining what things mean in historical context.
