<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> The contemporary rise of data visualization and imaging technologies in all areas of knowledge now places design and visuality at the heart of research and its communication, with fundamental implications for scientific epistemology. Jacques Bertin's Laboratoire de Graphique (LG) of the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in France, is a privileged entry for this study, since it was a major player in this movement, at the crossroads of graphic innovation and social sciences as they reinvented themselves in the second half of the twentieth century.</p><p>This intervention aims to explore a black box of research in the humanities and social sciences, according to two approaches, that of the interdisciplinary collaborations and that more experimental of the graphic design and formatting of information. By design we mean as all the processes from graphical display of data, to CHI, new methods of scientific representation.</p><p>This laboratory was created and directed by the cartographer and semiologist Jacques Bertin from 1954 to 2000 at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Études and, under the impetus of Fernand Braudel, at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), is considered as a forerunner of productions and reflections on graphic research in the social sciences. His work articulates an unprecedented production of images, visualization of data and scientific research, forming the subject of a fundamental treatise, Graphical Semiology (1967). The intervention will trace the largely unknown history of this laboratory, will pinpoint the contributions and the intellectual trajectory of its graphic experiments and collaborations.</p><p>Indeed, while the activities related to the LG's cartographic research are relatively well known, its interactions with history, statistics, sociology, anthropology, urbanism, literature and the decorative arts remain unexplored.</p><p>Jacques Bertin, in <i>Semiology of graphics</i> (1967), highlighted the concept of « visual variables » to build a general rhetoric of visual representation: background shape orientation grain color, etc.</p><p>The paradox of these visual variables is the desire to achieve an objectivity of representation, while taking into account the ”aesthetic“ part of the data. This graphic rhetoric developed by Bertin has influenced many works and disciplines, becoming almost standard, convention, rules. In this session we propose to discuss the relationship between design and visual variables in the contemporary visual display of information.</p><p>We will start by presenting the two complementary funds of archives of the Laboratoire de Graphique the NAs and the BnF, allowing a genetic analysis of the origin of certain concepts of Bertin to give an account of the process of their elaboration.</p><p>We will present collaborations, content, and processes to produce a story that is at once aesthetic, social, economic, and political. We will measure the evolution of scientific imaginaries, the values and uses of representation methods and graphic communication tools, their epistemological scope into 4 thematics:</p><ol><li>The Life of the Graphic Lab: Pathways, Collaborations and Practices at EHESS. Collaboration Braudel-Bertin,creation of the visual identity of the EHESS, practices and conceptualization of the place of graphic research in the social sciences. Bertin heritage in current research programs</li><li>The graphic semiotics of Jacques Bertin: genesis and effects, including in contemporary digital humanities (statistics, big data, cultural analytics). Visual variable and Display of information as the starting point of a research, fieldworks</li><li>The expressivity and plasticity of graphic work: the representation of geographical and human territory. Contribution of the experimental work of the Graphical Laboratory to cartography; materialization of the instrumental design and graphic knowledge in the uses and materiality of the cards from the point of view of the plastic creation and the patrimonial conservation. Objectivity and visual display: relationships between graphics and fact in scientific demonstration</li><li>Graphical semiology in contemporary research, from graphic semiology to information design; pedagogical and epistemological issues of graphic semiology; dissemination of the work of the Laboratoire de Graphique and impact on the field of design and different disciplines in the international context. « Redesigning » the concepts of Bertin: how new data processing tools can contribute?</li></ol><p>The new convergences between design and research will be mobilized to question the place devolved to design in the visual and instrumental construction of contemporary scientific practices and knowledge. This will stimulate a dynamic and a collective experience of interdisciplinary discovery of uses of these methods and tools in heritage context.</p>

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Adaptations of <i>Semiology of Graphics: Diagrams, Networks, Maps</i> (Bertin, 1967), and more broadly Jacques Bertin’s graphics research published since the mid-sixties, are manifold. So is the wide range of fields chosen to present various visual transformations and deep interpretations proposed to explain his actual graphical methods. From agriculture to demography, or european electric industry to animal behaviour responding to the light (pill bugs…), anything that can be quantified, compared and classified could fit in some graphic treatment for a better understanding. In this respect, graphics is able to go deeper and faster than any other analysis.</p><p>I would like to present a forgotten, unusual, rather unfinished, attempt to make use of graphics in a french design graduate school pedagogy during the eighties. Obviously, the impact of Bertin's research is huge in the cartography and social or historical sciences, but it seems seldom in the more casual educational domain, and more particularly in graphic design training course. Is it a paradox?</p>

In this paper, we explore the relevance of graphic novels to understanding and responding to the complex nature of traumatic experiences. We argue that graphic narratives of trauma, which combine visual images and written text, significantly differ from biomedical and legal accounts by presenting the nuances of traumatic experiences that escape the conventions of written testimony. Building on the literature that integrates social justice concerns with visual methods and graphic medicine, we contend that graphic narratives effectively convey the complexities of traumatic experiences, including embodied experiences that are not always apparent, intelligible, or representable in written form, leading to greater social recognition of the dynamics and consequences of trauma. To illustrate this claim, we analyze Una’s Becoming Unbecoming (2015), a graphic novel that explores themes relating to trauma and social justice. Una relies on the graphic medium to explore the interconnections between personal and collective experiences of gender-based violence, and to show how physical embodied experience is central to her own experience of trauma. Graphic narratives like Becoming Unbecoming also offer a space for addressing the emotional, physical and financial costs of survivorship that usually are not available in legal written testimonies, potentially leading to better justice outcomes for trauma survivors in terms of social intelligibility and recognition, and access to social resources for healing.

The application of systemism, an innovative and user-friendly technique for generating lucid, graphic summaries of analytical arguments, can enhance the social sciences. Content, as research and pedagogy move forward, becomes increasingly vast and diverse in theory and methods. Systemism offers both a means and a method for enhanced communication in the face of challenges posed by the rapid expansion of the social sciences in the fast-paced world of the new millennium. This is the motivation for a Special Issue of Social Sciences that will show systemism in action. The Visual International Relations Project (VIRP) archive continues to accumulate materials. The contents of this Special Issue will demonstrate the value of that resource across a wide range of subject areas. This introductory article proceeds in five sections. The first section provides a general overview of systemism and the VIRP. The second section introduces systemism in greater detail as a graphic approach to the communication of ideas. The third section applies systemism to convey the framework for analysis utilizing a classic work of social science—The Logic of Collective Action. The fourth section outlines the articles that follow in making up the Special Issue. The fifth and final section sums up what has been accomplished in this introductory article.

The history of the art of graphic design and posters goes back to cave drawings during the Stone Age. Graphic design and posters are based on social needs and change in different stages of social development. They are now enjoying one of the apexes of their development. The art of graphic and poster design which developed and evolved in the historical and social development process, has taken on new dimensions during the transition from the modern to the postmodern period in accordance with the needs of our society of consumption and by using the technical/technological tools and methods within this period. In particular, the invention of the printing press, lithography, and the Industrial Revolution have led to great leaps in the art of graphic and poster design as in all other areas of life. Computer and digital technologies that were first developed in the middle of the 20th century almost brought about a revolution in the art of graphic and poster design. These great breakthroughs caused technical and technological innovations and changed the art of graphic design. While education in graphic design acquired an institutional dimension, its aims and objectives were transformed. Discussions of postmodernism, new forms of relationship, concepts and schools are reflected in the art. Relationships between postmodernism and graphic design, poster styles categorized as postmodern and advertising culture have caused new debates. Advertisements and advertising posters have acquired new forms to meet the needs of today’s consumer society, which are getting more and more complex. Its dynamics have changed posters and advertising. This study discusses the evolution of the art of graphic and poster design within the whole historical and social development process, its dimensions, postmodernism and striking examples of postmodern advertising posters.

The use of six non-fiction graphic novels to teach historical agency in a social studies methods course was examined in a critical action research study. Pre-service social studies teachers were asked to read one graphic novel and to discuss it with classmates, first in literature circles, then as a whole class. Data revealed graphic novels engaged pre-service teachers in thinking about historical agency, and helped them make connections between historical agency and their own agency. There were three overlapping ways pre-service teachers connected to historical agency in all six graphic novels: upbringing and personal experience, unpredictability of historical situations, and injustice. The findings highlight the value of graphic novels for teaching about historical agency in social studies courses because of their focus on historical agents’ positionality.

ІНФОРМАЦІЙНИЙ The purpose of the article is to highlight the results of the half-year activity of the Department of Graphic Design of KNUKiM (KNUC&A) in the informational struggle against Russian aggression. The experience of creative resistance as a creative mission of students and teachers of the department in the period from February 24 to August 24, 2022, is analyzed from the standpoint of the concept of the “socially responsible initiative” of a graphic designer introduced by the author of the article. The purpose is also to compile pedagogical activities for the training of socially responsible graphic design professionals. Research methods. The empirical method, method of analysis, and synthesis were used. Numerous scholarly and journalistic materials on the social responsibility of the graphic designer were analysed. In addition, the methodological basis for the article was the review and systematisation of empirical material regarding the results of the activities carried out. Scientific novelty. Based on consideration of the “social responsibility” concepts from the management sphere and “initiative” from the pedagogy sphere in the context of a modern graphic designer activity, a new notion of “socially responsible initiative” is introduced. It is interpreted as one of the signifiers of professionalism. The author shows that the vectors of realization of the socially responsible initiative directly depend on the state of the society where the designer practices. On the example of the activities of the Graphic Design Department of KNUKiM, the manifestation of this professional characteristic in the conditions of full-scale Russian aggression in Ukraine is reflected. Coverage of collective creative activity of teachers and students is shown in the context of a pedagogical experiment that passed the self-organization stage and the organizational stage. Conclusions. Modern visual communication is an area of constant interaction between different social groups of society, which graphic designers provide with their projects. The Department of Graphic Design of KNUKiM once again showed its creativity and progressiveness in the process of training design professionals. The team, made up of teachers and students, has made and continues to make a powerful contribution to the information front in Ukraine during the active phase of Russia’s war in Ukraine: more than 200 exhibition posters have been designed, and participation in international projects has been accepted, around 30 exhibitions have been organised and held in Ukraine and abroad. At the level of professional design communities, we organise landmark exhibitions in which the created works not only present a sharp reaction to the present but also model the future with their verbal and non-verbal codes.

Since student learning and supervision are viewed as social processes, investigations into doctoral learning need to consider social learning theories and ways to illuminate student relations during this time. For such social research, interviews are the most extensively used instruments to gather data, but the data can be enriched by the use of visuals. This article reports on the value of two modes of graphic elicitation interviews to delve into factors that impacted on the progress of research master’s and doctoral students at one university. The studies were exploratory and the approach was within the framework of participatory visual research methodologies. The first setting involved 11 participants who were particularly successful in the completion of their studies. In accordance with the socio-cultural theory, the students completed a diagram in the form of a relational map, after having completed a table in which they brainstormed the people, artifacts, and processes that contributed most to their success. In the second setting, 10 less diligent students were instructed to complete drawings (timelines) to illustrate their research journeys. These were guided by three questions to ensure that the students focused on the topic. In both instances, the graphics (diagram/drawing) were used to elicit interviews, which were tape recorded. In the second setting, the situated learning theory, the social capital theory, and the self-regulated learning theory were used to analyze the data and identify themes in the narratives. The paper highlights the advantages and limitations of both methods. Both methods facilitated unexpected outcomes. The biggest advantage of drawings was that they were unconstrained by the researcher’s previous knowledge about the topic. Moreover, their greater flexibility allowed participants more freedom of expression and a stronger voice. However, the selection of visuals (such as diagrams, tables, or drawings) should be based on the specific aims of the research.

In this article, we propose an innovative mixed methods research (MMR) technique and discuss its theory and applications. The visual replay methodology (VRM) is a new graphic way to investigate the discourse patterns during software-aided small group discussions. A visually supported conversation is recorded through screen capturing and replayed to reconstruct how the discussion has unfolded. The VRM responds to the “integration challenge” that the MMR community is facing—by employing the power of visualization, data integration is leveraged to a new level, where visual synergy gains enable a “value-added” research outcome. By employing multigenre integration and a moderately pragmatic approach, the VRM reduces the researcher–subject power-relation gap and contributes to some long-standing MMR debates regarding reflexivity and participation.

Objective: Graphic warning labels (GWLs) are effective in communicating tobacco-related harms. Methods: In this mixed-methods study, we used purposive sampling to recruit 100 low-income smokers in the San Francisco Bay Area between October 2017 and February 2018 to participate in an intervention promoting smoke-free homes. We presented the 2009 Food and Drug Administration-proposed GWLs and explored perceptions of affect, efficacy, and appeal using questionnaires at baseline, 3- and 6-months follow-up. Because of participants' interest in this topic, we subsequently conducted a qualitative sub-study among 20 participants exploring perceived efficacy of GWLs on smoking cessation. Results: In all, 87.3% and 59.2% agreed that GWLs were useful and would motivate cessation behaviors, respectively, at baseline. We found that the most common responses were shock (61.8%) and disgust (55.3%), whereas anger (29.0%) and annoyance (19.7%) were less common. Participants also reported that GWLs unequivocally illustrating smoking's harmful effects were more appealing than non-specific images, as were images that depicted positive cessation-related effects. Conclusions: GWLs appear to be an important health communication among low-income smokers. Future studies on GWLs should examine the association of negative affect and cessation among this population.

The purpose of the research. This article is a review and aims to examine the state of research on the problem of the modern font poster in the works of Ukrainian scholars. The research methods are based on the principles of historicism and general scientific generalisation, and include the use of source, art historical and comparative analysis. The scientific novelty of the study lies in the processed material introduction from the scientific research field into the scientific circulation of one of the important areas of graphic design – the font poster. It is proposed to consider the font poster as a means of communication with visualisation tools in the formation of ecological culture in the modern world. Conclusions. The process of researching the topic of the modern font poster in the scientific discourse allowed us to identify several thematic areas in the developments of scientists that should be considered in the context of a broader connection in the graphic practice of today, namely: 1) communicative and advertising properties of the poster; 2) font design as a special form of social consciousness expression; 3) the font poster contradictions and development. As a result of the study, we conclude that today there is a shortage of thorough fundamental research on the font poster. Despite the large number of scientific studies of various areas of graphic design, including poster graphics of the early twenty-first century, presented in Ukrainian historiography, only a small number of works deal with the design of font posters and their features. Also, the topic of the international font poster development is not fully reflected in scientific research. The situation is even more critical with the study of the modern font poster, which, apart from a few articles, has received little substantial attention in the Ukrainian research literature. A separate gap is the environmental font poster. Thus, the state of the font poster research reveals the need for a comprehensive study and determination of its modern specificity.

The use of diagrams to stimulate dialogue in research interviews, a technique known as graphic elicitation, has burgeoned since the year 2000. Reviews of the graphic elicitation literature have relied on the inconsistent terminology currently used to index visual methods, and have so far drawn only a partial picture of their use. Individual diagrams are seen as stand-alone tools, often linked to particular disciplines, rather than as images created from a toolbox of common elements which can be customized to suit a research study. There is a need to examine participant-led diagramming with a view to matching the common elements of diagrams with the objectives of a research project. This article aims to provide an overview of diagramming techniques used in qualitative data collection with individual participants, to relate the features of diagrams to the aspects of the social world they represent, and to suggest how to choose a technique to suit a research question.

Streszczenie:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the potential of participant-created comics as a research method through a project to investigate the life stories of British–Bangladeshi women. Design/methodology/approach The author worked with a group of ten women through a series of workshops exploring their personal and community histories. Each of the women produced a digital comic that represented her story using text in any languages, photographs and drawings. Findings The experiences of the Graphic Lives project suggest there is considerable unexplored potential for the use of comics creation as a research method when working with community groups that may be considered “hard-to-reach”. A crucial difference between the comics created for the Graphic Lives project when compared to many other visual methods is that they do not seek or attempt to represent a verifiable truth. The project acknowledged and accepted the presence of fictional elements of autobiography and the difficulty in drawing boundaries between fiction and non-fiction. Indeed, this was seen as a strength of the stories as the use of imaginary elements offered participants a way to express emotional truths that they may otherwise have found difficult to convey. Research limitations/implications Whilst interviewing participants could be one way to analyse participant-created comics in certain circumstances, this should not simply be the default. In the Graphic Lives project, it was important to accept that participants had already voiced their story in a certain way – using words and images – during the creative process. The project needed to accept and respect their voices as they had chosen to present them and not expect the participants to transform this into something that was more aligned with what the researcher might want to hear. A limitation of this method is the time and resourcing required to undertake such a programme of in-depth work, in addition to the need for close collaboration with community partners. Practical implications The paper questions the appropriateness of research interviews when working with many “marginalised” groups. It suggests that alternative methods, such as the comics creation method described, may be a more effective way to engage “hard-to-reach” groups in research. Social implications This research has implications for the involvement of groups who, for a variety of reasons, are often excluded from research. It outlines a method that may be more socially acceptable than more established methods such as interviewing for some groups. Originality/value To date, exploration of the potential of comics as method of participatory knowledge construction has been limited. In addition, the use of comics to engage communities in research, especially adult groups who may be more reluctant to participate via traditional research methods, has received relatively little attention. This paper addresses these issues through a discussion of the use of comics creation as the research method adopted in a project working with a group of British–Bangladeshi women in the UK.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Since 2019, National Weather Service (NWS) offices have been able to issue 360-character Wireless Emergency Alert (“WEA360”) messages for tornadoes. NWS is now considering changing from a “deterministic” to a “probabilistic” warning paradigm. That change could possibly influence how WEA360 messages for tornado are issued in the future. Recent experimental studies have found that probabilistic hazard information (PHI) forecast graphics improve consumers’ risk perception for tornadoes, but findings from these studies concerning whether PHI forecast graphics improve people’s protective action decision-making are mixed. The present study therefore investigated how mock PHI-enhanced WEA360 messages might influence people’s risk perception and protective action decision-making. Analysis of qualitative data gathered from a combination of questionnaire and focus group interview methods conducted in collaboration with 31 community members in Denver, Colorado, indicated that inclusion of PHI forecast graphics within WEA360 messages elicited high levels of understanding and message believability but did not consistently lead to appropriate precautionary intent. Because warning response is a complex social phenomenon, PHI may not significantly improve protective action decision-making if PHI forecast graphics are eventually presented to consumers via the Wireless Emergency Alerts system. Factors that PHI stakeholders should consider before the adoption of PHI-enhanced WEA360 messages for consumers are discussed. Significance Statement This study examines how consumers respond to and talk about mock WEA360 messages for tornadoes that contain embedded PHI forecast graphics. As NWS considers moving to a probabilistic warning paradigm, stakeholders will need to determine how PHI forecast graphics might be communicated directly to consumers, if at all. Our findings suggest that combining WEA360 messages with PHI forecast graphics creates challenges and complexities related to consumers’ assessment of personal risk and protective action decision-making. Overall, the study suggests that any future PHI-enhanced WEA360 messages provided directly to consumers, if at all, must avoid discrepancies (even subtle) between the level of risk represented by the PHI forecast graphic and the protective action guidance included in the text of the messages.

Background. Tobacco use is a significant health concern in Southeast Asia, particularly in Bangladesh, where the greatest incidence of tobacco consumption occurs in a number of forms smoking, smokeless, and indigenous. The WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) requires tobacco product packaging to include adequate health warnings (text and visual). The study’s objective is to investigate the effects of graphic health warnings on tobacco packs among Bangladeshi low socioeconomic groups. Study Design. Cross-sectional study. Methods. The study was conducted with 400 participants (low socioeconomic people) by using the systematic sampling technique through a semistructured questionnaire in Demra and Tongi industrial areas of Dhaka city in Bangladesh during September 2019-November 2020. Descriptive statistics (frequencies, percentages, means, and standard deviations) and inferential analysis (i.e., chi-square tests) were performed by Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS version 25.0) to explore the relationship between the graphic warning and the use of tobacco. Results. This study illustrates that 89% of respondents smoke only cigarette or bidi, where 95.1% were daily smokers. About 72.2% reported pictorial warning message was more understandable while 90.8% reported the existing text warnings explicitly visualize the health harms. It has been found that there was a significant association between the respondent’s opinion on the text warning that encouraged the respondent to quit tobacco use and the text messages “smoking causes throat and lung cancer” ( p < 0.001 ) and “smoking causes respiratory problems” ( p < 0.001 ). Around 96.7% knew about the graphic health warnings on the cigarette packets where 99.2% reported graphic warning explicitly visualizes the health harms. In graphical warnings, text messages have a great influence on quitting smoking where “smoking causes throat and lung cancer” ( p < 0.001 ) and “smoking causes stroke” ( p < 0.001 ). Nearly 79.2% of respondents thought the color of the graphic warning should be “Red” and a significant association between the color and the education level of the respondents explored here ( p < 0.05 ). Conclusions. GHWs are more understandable on tobacco packets, and it has significant impacts on being aware of health consequences from tobacco consumption.

Strict quarantine restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemic have significantly changed the social reality. The pandemic has become a catalyst for a significant number of processes that have affected all areas of human activity, including education. The learning process in the extreme mode was transferred into a distance format, which, on the one hand, was a better solution than its termination. On the other hand, a sharp change in the format of education has particularly affected practice-oriented and creative disciplines. The advantages and disadvantages of this approach are considered in this article on the example of the discipline "Drawing and Painting", by observing the results of its teaching in the online format. The purpose of the study is to identify ways to adapt the methodology of teaching the discipline "Drawing and Painting" to the conditions of quarantine, to identify opportunities for new educational and communication online platforms in the art process, while not losing the classic tradition of mastering the basics of visual literacy. When students have direct contact with the teacher. Research methodology. The author, based on their own practical experience of a professional artist, analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of online learning and determines the direction of solving problems identified in the implementation of the discipline program “Drawing and Painting” in a distance format. The scientific novelty of research lies in the following aspects: expansion of ideas about the peculiarities of teaching art disciplines in the extreme mode of the pandemic, identifying the specifics of transferring traditional teaching methods to distance learning platforms, new structuring of the curriculum "Drawing and Painting". Conclusions. It is proved that distance technologies cannot replace all other methods and types of teaching in the discipline "Drawing and Painting" and should be considered only as an effective addition to traditional methods. We conclude that the main part of practical classes, where an important task is the formation of students’ motivation, professional values and independent non-stereotypical thinking, cannot be carried out without live communication between teacher and student.

This paper is devoted to image encoding based on determining the similarity of fragments by using neural networks to extract the features of fragments and machine learning algorithms to find similar fragments. In the modern world, the problem of image storage is quite relevant. Graphic data takes up quite a lot of disk space, while Internet users upload more and more pictures. Also, every year there is a development of photography and image quality is improving, respectively, and the size of graphic data is growing. Data warehouses of social networks, messengers, file sharers and other Internet resources are filled with tens of thousands of new pictures every day. Therefore, the question arises about reducing the size of graphic data. In general, it should be noted that one of the most important and defining aspects of both storage and transmission of information is its compression. The problem described above is solved by encoding and compressing images. With the help of coding, the size of graphic information is reduced, which saves storage space and, accordingly, the money spent. In view of this, it is important to develop a method and means of image coding. Many methods exist for compressing graphic information. For example, jpeg, webp, png and others. These methods usually use the removal of redundant information in the photo and work purely with the image itself, but none of the methods uses fragments of similar images. The article uses convolutional neural networks and KNN (k-Nearest Neighbors) classifier for image encoding. and compares the size of the encoded image with the input. In order to encode the image, you first need to fill the data warehouse with features of fragments of similar images, then for each fragment of the obtained images you need to select the features and write to the data warehouse. Once the snippet feature database is formed, you can encode new images using saved snippets.

Abstract Design disciplines have a long history of creating well-integrated solutions to challenges which are complex, uncertain and contested by multiple stakeholders. Society faces similar challenges in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, so design methods hold much potential. While principles of good design are well established, there has been limited integration of design thinking with sustainability science. To advance this integration, we examine the process of designing MetaMAP: an interactive graphic tool for collaborating to understand social–ecological systems and design well-integrated solutions. MetaMAP was created using Research through Design methods which integrate creative and scientific thinking. By applying design thinking, researchers and practitioners from different backgrounds undertook multiple cycles of problem framing, solution development, testing and reflection. The testing was highly collaborative involving over 150 people from diverse disciplines in workshops, case studies, interviews and critique. Reflecting on this process, we discuss design principles and opportunities for integrating design thinking with sustainability science to help achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Background Many people experienced unintended weight gain during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been discussed widely on social media. Objective This study aims to describe the content of weight loss videos on YouTube (Google LLC) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods By using the keywords weight loss during quarantine, the 100 most viewed English-language videos were identified and coded for content related to losing weight gained during the COVID-19 pandemic. Results In total, 9 videos were excluded due to having non-English content or posting data before the COVID-19 pandemic. The 91 videos included in the study sample acquired 407,326 views at the time of study and were roughly 14 minutes long. A total of 48% (44/91) of the sample videos included graphic comparisons to illustrate weight change. Videos that included a graphic comparison were more likely to have content related to trigger warnings (χ21=6.05; P=.01), weight loss (χ21=13.39; P<.001), negative feelings during quarantine (χ21=4.75; P=.03), instructions for losing weight (χ21=9.17; P=.002), self-love (χ21=6.01; P=.01), body shaming (χ21=4.36; P=.04), and special dietary practices (χ21=11.10; P<.001) but were less likely to include food recipes (χ21=5.05; P=.03). Our regression analysis results suggested that mentioning quarantine (P=.05), fat-gaining food (P=.04), self-care and self-love (P=.05), and body shaming (P=.008) and having presenters from both sexes (P<.001) are significant predictors for a higher number of views. Our adjusted regression model suggested that videos with content about routine change have significantly lower view counts (P=.03) than those of videos without such content. Conclusions The findings of this study indicate the ways in which YouTube is being used to showcase COVID-19–related weight loss in a pre-post fashion. The use of graphic comparisons garnered a great deal of attention. Additional studies are needed to understand the role of graphic comparisons in social media posts. Further studies that focus on people’s attitudes and behaviors toward weight change during the COVID-19 pandemic and the implications of social media on these attitudes and behaviors are warranted.

The purpose of the research is to analyze the parallels between the monumental art of Ukrainian artists of the 1960s and 1970s and world graphic design. Research methods consist in the application of formal and stylistic analysis of works of art, as well as general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis of new materials introduced into scientific circulation. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the stylistic performance of unstudied enough objects of monumental and decorative art was analyzed. Achievements in the creation of symbolic and design systems were compared. The main common conceptual approaches in creation, the similarity of thematic directions and stylistic approaches are identified, the differences of the visual language due to various performance techniques are diagnosed. The photos from a private family archive have been made public for the first time. Conclusions. Despite the general ideological engagement of the Soviet artistic environment in the 1960s and 1970s, there were works that were ahead of their time and used the material resources of the USSR-Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic to create works on universally important topics (culture, science, technology, history). Such are Oleg Yerzhykivsky’s panels for monumental structures created by him during his work in 1963-1969 at ZNDIEP (Kyiv Zonal Research Institute of Experimental Design of Residential and Public Buildings), which can be attributed to urban identity devoid of any propaganda communist color in the subject, but rather devoted to civilizational values. Using the achievements of the creation of sign and symbolic systems of previous historical periods, the master managed to create his own stylistic system, which exists outside of time and a specific state or social order. From a formative point of view, the analyzed panels gravitate towards the visual language of graphic design, predicting such genre sectors as identity, brand books, navigation systems for public spaces, mascots for brands, etc. The common features established by this study are: laconic image, condensation of graphic expression, development of a system of signs perceived at the level of conventional symbols, use of elementary modular grid for arrangement of visual elements and creation of patterns (prefabricated plate technology).

The purpose of the study is to reveal the patterns of pictorial coding and the formation of symbolic images and visual systems based on them in propaganda graphics during the war between russia and Ukraine. Research methods. The methodology of the research is based on semantic and structural art analysis. The scientific novelty of the research is the reflecting of the spectrum of iconic and symbolic images, which represent the accuracy of coding socio-historical events and the clarity of their fixation in visual communications; and also – detection of differentiation of standard and innovative signs and symbols. Conclusions. In the considered poster projects, the most characteristic forms of image-visual coding of information are highlighted; there are established "traditional", "innovative" and "situational" symbolic forms, and the conditions of their interaction to ensure the quality of the communicative process are defined. Thus, the campaign graphics of KNUKiM students reveals appealing to the treasure trove of already established forms of conventional signs-indexes and conventional symbols, as well as its enrichment with new symbols. Violent and rapidly changing social events and the need for their wide discussion in society lead to the formation of both new visual word images and their "word combinations" and linguistic interpretations. Simultaneously, visual symbols are updated, containing layers of information that are much larger and more meaningful than the initial interpretation of each individual symbol. At the same time, the combined use of various symbols and the leveling of the unification of visual stylistics lead to unexpected and not always expected by the authors results of the "decoding" graphic appeals. In view of the mentioned problem, it is urgent and necessary to focus the attention of scientists on the in-depth and more detailed illumination of symbols and stylistic ways of their display, which are currently being formed and spread in the information environment.

Introduction. The current social and economic changes caused by networking relations in the economic system are a significant element of contemporary scientific research aimed to identify the essential characteristics of such new concepts as "network economy" and "social ca-pital". This situation has resulted from the development of Internet technologies, the increasing role of intangible assets in value creation, and the need to study the state involvement in these processes, which identifies the level of their development.Problem. The impact of social capital on the economic system has been observed in various patterns of economic system relationships, and it is amid the network economy that this impact is clearly revealed through the changes in the manifestation of network effects. It is necessary to specify such changes for the effective organization of economic relations under the conditions of the network economy as well as for the determination of the role of social capital in them. The aim of the article is to identify the relationship between social capital and the network economy and determine in which interacttion patterns of the economic system social capital changes (or levels) the manifestation of network effects.Methods. In the course of the research, the following methods were used: analysis, generalization, comparison, analogy, scenario construction, graphic, and microeconomic analysis (marginal utility curve).Results. In the course of the research, there has been revealed the relationship between the levels of social capital and network readiness, as well as theoretical and practical aspects of the outlined issues. The findings obtained while analyzing the nature of the formation of various relationship patterns of the economic system and the role of social capital in those patterns show that social capital determines the manifestation character of network effects (positive and negative) in such patterns.Conclusions. The components of social capital are identical to the elements of network viability. Thus, social capital becomes a key management object in the network economy. The obtained results of the research will form the basis for further scientific research on the social capital management system of an enterprise in the network economy.

The purpose of the study was to examine whether the presence of items that covered cultural questions in the test оn arts for student graphic designers influenced the fairness of the test across different ethnic and social groups. The reason for the study was to address the gap in the development and validation of tests оn arts that include a cultural domain to assess the skills of undergraduate graphic designers. The research design was based on DIF and DTF methods to examine the factorial structure of test data and to identify whether the factorial structure of the test was the same across ethnic and social groups. A one-factor CFA model was applied to perform measurements for categorised ethnic and social status groups to identify whether the factorial structure was similar or identical for them. The goodness-of-fit measures were calculated using the chi-square statistics, CFI, TLI, and RMSEA to identify how the obtained data is consistent with the hypothesised model. The inclusion of local culture-related questions in the tests оn arts to assess the skills of student graphic designers influences the individuals' latent traits which lead to an increase in DIF values. Though there were detected seven items with the DIF for the whole test, the DTF measurements showed that the DIF effect eliminated each out at test level which is related to the fact the certain ethnic groups performed better in answering some specific test items, while certain status groups performed better in answering some other test items. It is noteworthy that DTF for the Ukrainian art (miscellaneous) section was between 0.07 and 0.14 meaning a moderate DTF effect. However, the DTF variance values for the sections of principles of design and principles of art were lower than 0.07 meaning a small effect. Therefore, it could be concluded that small DTF effects found in both the whole test and each test section separately indicated that DIF effects eliminate each other at the test level.

Background. Forming a system of spatial, social and cultural landmarks, each speaker consciously/unconsciously records proper names which seem important. The most significant units are remembered, and it is they that determine the general idea of the entire set of marked objects. Since the system of linguistic units in the individual mental lexicon is regulated by a great number of subjective factors, it can be assumed that the tendencies of the reflection of reality in the mental lexicon common to a group of speakers open the way to the analysis of current social stereotypes. Shop and store names are one of the groups of commercial names, therefore, by their very nature, they are maximally oriented towards reflecting positive stereotypes of large social groups.Purpose. The purpose of this article is to analyze how the names of shops and stores are reflected in the mental lexicon of the women residents of Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, and to try to outline the connection between the proper names verbalization in speakers’ mental lexicon and their ideas about extralinguistic reality.Methods. The material for this study consists of 249 graphic variants of 160 names of clothing, footwear and food stores, collected by surveying 45 women residents of Kyiv. Descriptive, comparative, and quantitative methods were used in the research, and techniques of the structural method were occasionally involved.Results. Current store names in the capital of Ukraine create а very colorful linguistic landscape with its main feature – the predominance of foreign language components, both lexical and graphic. Among all this diversity, the speaker remembers 3 or 4 names оn average, which determine her idea of the general trends in the nomination of objects in this field and indirectly ‒ these objects themselves. The analysis of store and shop names active in the mental lexicon of Kyiv residents shows that the absolute majority of clothing and shoe stores (79 % and 81 %, respectively) are perceived by names identified with other cultural spaces. Not only the name’s origin, but primarily its graphic form is a clear indicator of belonging to some cultural space. The opposite case in the name system of grocery stores is recorded ‒ only 26 % of them were reproduced by respondents in Latin. The form in which the store or shop name is stored in the mental lexicon depends on a) the graphic code visualized on the signboard / in the advertisement and b) the sound form of the name commonly used in informal communication. The activity of the second factor directly depends on the symmetry of the sound and spelling of the barbarism name and the level of speaker’s foreign language competence. The result of the collision of different graphic codes in the speaker’s mind is mixing, which is manifested in the recording of the original form of the name from Latin to Cyrillic during memorization. Therefore, while keeping proper names in memory, speakers try to assimilate their form to the rest of the fixed units, and this often manifests itself in the transformation of the original form of proper name.Discussion. Oversaturation of Kyiv’s commercial ergonomics system with barbaric names forms a strong public stereotype about the attractiveness and progressiveness of other cultures in the consumption sphere and creates the illusion of the absence of national Ukrainian in it. Trying to master the system of store and shop names, Kyiv residents find themselves in a conflict situation: the dominant graphic code for them is the Cyrillic alphabet, while the Latin alphabet prevails in the visual space of Kyiv’s trade establishments. The way out of this situation is transformation ‒ recording of the original name with the help of a graphic system convenient for the speaker. In order to form a general idea about the reflection of the commercial proper names system in the mental lexicon of Ukrainians, it is necessary to involve in the study data from representatives of different age groups from different regions of the country.

Following the 1958 Revolution, many Iraqi artists were sent abroad to study in foreign art academies and train in the latest methods – especially printmaking. The popularity and necessity of print in transnational decolonial movements lent printing practices a popular edge while enhancing the artwork’s seeming accessibility and reproducibility. As artists navigated the regional contours of transnational modernism while exploring graphic artmaking methods in the 1960s, several turned to the country’s southern wetland landscapes as new sites and creative worlds. This contribution examines a few of these mid-century experiments with the Mesopotamian marshlands in order to explore how these works bloomed in the liquid nature of printmaking while simultaneously proliferating images of the southern marshlands increasingly under threat in rapidly modernizing twentieth-century Iraq.

This article examines six categories of socio-economic development such as: social, infrastructural, natural, economic, cultural and regional security. However, the authors focused attention on the parametric detailing of the “social security” category. The relevance of this topic is dictated by the turbulent state of the economy of the Russian Federation, the theoretical diversity of methods for assessing the socio- economic development of the region, as well as the need to develop indicators that would provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the “social security” category. Moreover, the need to reduce the gap in the socio-economic development of regions focuses attention on such a task as ensuring equal opportunities for citizens. In the process of working with scientific treatises of domestic authors, the relationship between the economic development of the region and the social well-being of its inhabitants was established, aspects of social security were studied, such as the availability of education, healthcare and social services. As a result, the literature review was systematized according to the classification proposed by the authors, and a review of the state of social security was carried out based on selected indicators among the constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The inclusion of a particular parameter in a category has a logical and theoretical justification. To systematize the obtained theses, the authors developed graphic material. Data collection was carried out using a unified interdepartmental information and statistical system, and their mathematical and statistical processing was carried out in MS Excel. The research materials can be used in developing measures to improve the mechanism for making management decisions at the regional level, for example, developing new social protection programs, modernizing existing systems, or proposing new approaches to resource allocation.

Literary theory has developed with the development of the times. In traditional literary theory teaching, we always adhere to the “literature is the art of language” and “literature is a reflection of social life.” The essence of literature, the writer, the text, and the interpretation of the content, for example, are established on the basis of the understanding of language, in order to understand the world of literature reflect and express, and the image idea is basically not involved. This paper discusses the teaching of literary theory based on the relationship between language and picture, close to the literary reality to optimize the teaching content, carry out research-based teaching, and cultivate students’ thinking ability and practical ability, so as to explore and innovate the teaching of literary theory. For the objective questions or questions close to the objective questions, the machine is used for marking, while the subjective questions need teachers to mark. In addition, in terms of evaluation, qualitative and quantitative methods are used to comprehensively evaluate learners, and a preliminary evaluation table for students is designed.

The purpose of the article is to reveal the specifics of transformation of visual language as the artistic reflection on Dante’s images in European art practices, in particular in graphic design. The research methodology requires a comprehensive approach and involves the use of methods of art analysis, an empirical method of gathering theoretical and historical material, a method of comparison and generalization. The research uses general scientific methods, in particular the analysis and systematization of scientific literature on the topic of investigation. The historical-factual method was used to identify historical processes and factors that influenced the development of transformation of the visual language of illustration and other visual practices based on it. The scientific novelty is in conducting a comparative analysis of visual images based on the study of visualization of classical literature works. Interpretation of the images of this classic of world literature is given by a number of artists from Sandro Botticelli to Giovanni Tommasi Ferroni, as well as the presence of images of the “Divine Comedy” in mass and pop cultures are considered: the popularization of Dante, the exploitation of his image in the mass market through graffiti, cartoons, visual novels, websites, profiles in social networks, etc. Methods of adapting Dante’s stylistics for a modern viewer, accustomed to clip products, manifestations of distribution in the most popular social networks, have been determined. Conclusions. The research shows that the unique world of visual language in the illustration and design of book publications is transformed with the help of subjective artistic vision in order to maintain the interest of a modern reader of the pre-classical heritage. As a result of the research, we come to the conclusion that the popularization of the image of Dante in mass culture depends on the individual factor of the world perception of the artist as a creative personality. World classical art becomes the basis for the emergence of new sources of author’s creative approaches to the visual reinterpretation of the achievements of civilization. The process of transformation of the visual language of illustrations as components of graphic design ensures long-term support of the spread of images of the “Divine Comedy” not only in Dante Alighieri’s homeland, but also in the European art landscape.

The purpose of the article is to study the directions of development of the green economy in Ukraine as a factor of ensuring the transition to sustainable development of the country. Methodology. One of the main elements of the methodology for conducting research on the green economy as a factor of ensuring sustainable development are evaluation methods. Comparative, balance, graphic, economic-mathematical and other methods of economic justification are used in the work. The methods of systematisation and generalisation were used to study the principles of further ecologically balanced development, economic-statistical, structural-logical and analytical – for the development of methods and indicators for the analysis of the system of directions of the green economy, graphic – for the visual presentation of the dynamics of indicators of sustainable development. The results of the work show that the growth of income and employment in the green economy is guaranteed at the expense of public and private investments aimed at increasing energy efficiency, reducing the negative impacts of economic activity and increasing the diversity and productivity of the biosphere, in the interests of the entire population, especially the poorest. It is important to emphasise that the concept of the green economy does not replace the concept of sustainable development, but develops it and is a means of putting it into practice. Green development can only be ensured if environmental and economic policies are integrated in such a way that social progress, economic growth and improvement in the quality of life of the population take place against a background of reduced threats to the surrounding natural environment. Practical implications. The concept of green growth emphasises the importance of integrating environmental and economic policies in order to identify new potential sources of economic growth without placing an "unsustainable" burden on the quantity and quality of natural resources. The transition to a green economy requires the application of a wide range of measures, including economic instruments (taxes, subsidies, emissions trading schemes), government regulatory measures (setting standards) and non-economic measures (voluntary initiatives, provision of information). Value/originality. Important economic indicators of sustainable environmental and economic development are a nature-intensive economy and a structural indicator that reflects the specific weight of products and investments in the natural resource-based sectors of the economy.

AbstractThis study examined F1000Prime recommended research and review articles published in Cell, JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, and The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in 2010. The analyses included (1) the classifications assigned to the articles; (2) differences in Web of Science (WoS) citation counts over 9 years between the articles with F1000Prime recommendations and the other articles of the same journal; (3) correlations between the F1000Prime rating scores and WoS citation counts; (4) scaled graphic comparisons of the two measures; (5) content analysis of the top 5 WoS cited and top 5 F1000Prime scored NEJM articles. The results show that most of the recommended articles were classified as New Finding, Clinical Trial, Conformation, Interesting Hypothesis, and Technical Advance. The top classifications differred between the medical journals (JAMA, The Lancet, and NEJM) and the biology journal (Cell); for the latter, both New Finding and Interesting Hypothesis occurred more frequently than the three medical journals. The articles recommended by F1000 Faculty members were cited significantly more than other articles of the same journal for the three medical journals, but no significance was found between the two sets of articles in Cell. The correlations between the F1000Prime rating scores and WoS citation counts of the articles in the same journal were significant for the two medical journals (The Lancet and NEJM) and the biology journal (Cell). NEJM showed significances in both the upper quantile (top 50%), and the upper quartile (top 25%) sets. One of the medical journals, JAMA, did not show any significant correlation between the two measures. Despite the significant correlations of the three journals, Min–Max scaled graphic comparisons of the two measures did not reveal any patterns for predicting citation trends by F1000Prime rating scores. The peak citation year of the articles ranged from 2 to 8 years after the publication year for NEJM. Content analysis of the top-cited and top-scored NEJM articles found that highly commendable papers with comments such as “exceptional,” “landmark study,” or “paradigm shift” received varied rating scores. In comparison, some of the results corroborate with previous studies. Further studies are suggested to include additional journals and different years as well as alternative methods. Studies are needed to understand how F1000 Faculty assign ratings and what criteria they use. In addition, it is also worth investigating how F1000Prime users perceive the meanings of the ratings.

The purpose of the article is to identify the main approaches to promoting book products on the market, to determine the principles of a publishing project design system based on this and to apply them to the publication Graphic Design with a Ukrainian Face. Research methods. The empirical method, the method of analysis and synthesis were used. Scientific and journalistic sources devoted to book promotion and the place of design in marketing communication were studied; the design of implemented projects was analyzed in the context of the article’s topic. In addition, the study included a qualitative survey of the project’s target audience and interviewing. Scientific novelty. The article is the first to present a scientifically and empirically grounded development of a book promotion design system based on theoretical recommendations, target audience research, and interviews. It is proved that the book cover is not an independent isolated project. It is designed as part of a design system that provides for the possibility of advertising the book in the future. The project approach to promotional products as a sign system, which is a set of visual codes for reading by representatives of the target audience, has been improved. The implementation of the principle of seriality in the project and the creation of graphic design with Ukrainian identity were further developed. Conclusions. Given the statistics of Ukrainians’ interest in books as a product of consumption, the process of writing a Ukrainian book and publishing it remains relevant, and in the context of russia’s full-scale invasion in Ukraine, it even acquires special public and social significance. At the same time, the system of marketing communication measures to promote new publications on the market is being updated and improved. Among the most relevant today are representation on the website and social networks, online and offline thematic meetings related to the content of books, book presentations and various interactive events with readers. The system of measures to promote a particular book as an intellectual product should be consistent with and even subordinate to the marketing strategies developed by the publishing house where the book is published. A systematic approach to design plays an important role in communication. The design system, which includes both the cover and the communication support, should provide for advertising (uniqueness, expressiveness, effectiveness) and the possibility of varying the elements.

According to the related technologies of big data processing and the filtering algorithm of the model, the processing strategies and methods are put forward. The middle also introduces the big data mining method. Finally, according to the different data characteristics and different data processing requirements of the intelligent analysis system of film and television data, comparing the data of film works and TV dramas, the experimental results show that, based on the big data model, the pictures and words in both film works and TV dramas are inseparable and indispensable. In the later research, we choose the appropriate data processing scheme to design and implement the data processing flow, and successfully apply the film and television big data processing strategy and method proposed in this paper to practice, which provides reliable data support for the content analysis of film and television works. The model-based filtering algorithm calculates the relationship between image and text, turns the point into the probability formula of node-to-meta path, and takes the approximate value to achieve efficient model learning.
