The aim of this essay was to acquire an enhanced knowledge about young immigrants’ point of view of integration. During a former practical training semester I became interested in what the young immigrants thought about their own integration, what their conception was about this issue. I found that it had different meaning to different persons, to some it meant assimilation, to others it meant being able to interact with the opposite gender. To examine this I used interviews and interviewed an amount of young immigrants in different stages of their studies in Swedish. The essential theme throughout the work was to determine what the young people’s point of view was. I found that there is a profound interest from the professionals working with integration, to make the integration process as good as possible for the individuals undergoing it. But the most frequent opinion was that communication is most essential in this issue, the newly arrived young people couldn’t learn Swedish fast enough so that they would be able to communicate with there peers and the rest of the society.

SAMMANFATTNING:

Syftet med den här studien har varit att belysa och undersöka, utifrån en integrationsenhets lokalkontor i en glesbygdskommun i Norrland, dess integrationshandläggares syn på integration. Begreppet integration är svårdefinierat och det var därför intressant att ta reda på hur just dessa personer tänker och resonerar kring ämnet för att få en inblick av deras bild av integration och om och hur det påverkar deras sätt att arbeta. Resultatet vittnar om att begreppet integration är mångfacetterat och ter sig olika, även för yrkesverksamma inom samma profession, på samma arbetsplats, med samma arbetsuppgifter. Studien är kvalitativ och grundar sig på halvstrukturerad intervju som forskningsmetod. Intervjusvaren har analyserats utifrån meningskategorisering och presenteras under teman kopplade till studiens frågeställningar. Studien är ej generaliserbar eftersom endast två personer intervjuats och resultaten endast kan härröras till dessa personer, deras attityder, tankar och känslor.

Syftet med studien är att analysera hur de professionella på HVB-hem och skola beskriver samverkan mellan myndigheter gällande integration av ensamkommande barn i samhället. Studien är kvalitativ där sex intervjuer har genomförts. Tre stycken intervjuer gjordes på tre olika skolor och tre olika HVB-hem. Resultatet som framgår analyseras med hjälp av en tematisk analysmetod där resultatet delas in i olika huvudteman och underteman. Resultatet visar att samverkan mellan de involverade myndigheterna i stora drag fungerar bra men att det fortfarande finns negativa aspekter att jobba med. De ensamkommande barnen är i behov att känna sig välkomna för att en god integration skall ske. Studiens slutsats visar bland annat att en gynnsam integration inte endast innefattar en bra samverkansprocess mellan tidigare nämna aktörer. Informanterna menar att det har också att göra med att hela kommunen, alla dess medborgare, föreningar och ideella föreningar måste vara delaktiga för att generera en framgångsrik integration.

Idrott är ett globalt samhällsfenomen som berör och engagerar människor i olika kulturer och kan vara en potentiell mötesplats för integrationsmöjligheter för flyktingar. Antalet flyktingar ökar runt om i världen, och därmed reses frågan om hur integrationen blir för individen och på vilket sätt samhället kan bidra till den sociala integrationen? Syftet med uppsatsen är att genom en forskningsöversikt sammanställa och analysera vad forskning säger om idrottens betydelse för social integration bland flyktingar. Uppsatsens frågeställningar är: 1) Kan idrott anses vara ett verktyg för den sociala integrationen för flyktingar? 2) På vilket sätt kan man i så fall se att idrott bidrar till den sociala integrationen för flyktingar? Forskningen visar att idrottsföreningar, program och projekt som arbetar med att inkludera och hjälpa flyktingar ger förutsättningar för utvecklandet av socialt kapital, vilket i sin tur underlättar social integration. Tränare och ledare i idrottsföreningar har en viktig roll i att underlätta den sociala integrationsprocessen för flyktingar. Det är de som formar en välkomnande och positiv miljö där kulturell mångfald accepteras. I en sådan miljö kan flyktingar känna sig välkomna och utveckla sitt sociala kapital. Samtidigt blir de en del av flyktingarnas sociala nätverk och kan bidra med utvecklandet av annat kapital: ekonomiskt och kulturellt kapital. Deltagande i idrott ger även en känsla av tillhörighet, vilket kan kopplas till det sammanbindande och överbryggande sociala kapitalet. Slutligen framställs idrott som ett användbart verktyg för språkinlärning och kulturinlärning, vilket är bidragande faktorer för den sociala integrationen.
Sport is a global social phenomenon that affects and engages people in different cultures and can be a potential meeting place for integration opportunities for refugees. The number of refugees is increasing around the world, and therefore the question arises as to how integration becomes for the individual and in what way can society contribute to social integration? The purpose of the thesis is to compile and analyse what research says about the importance of sport for social integration among refugees through a research overview. The thesis questions are: 1) Can sport be considered as a tool for social integration of refugees? 2) If so, in what ways can you see that sport contributes to the social integration of refugees? The research shows that sports organisations, programs, and projects that work to include and help refugees provide conditions for the development of social capital, which in turn facilitates social integration. Coaches and leaders in sports organisations have an important role to play in facilitating the social integration process for refugees. It is they who create a welcoming and positive environment where cultural diversity is accepted. In such an environment, refugees may feel welcome and develop their social capital. At the same time, they become part of the refugee social network and can contribute to the development of other capital: economic and cultural capital. Participation in sports also gives a sense of belonging, which can be linked to the binding and bridging social capital. Finally, sport is presented as a useful tool for language learning and cultural learning, which are contributing factors for social integration.

Studies of interethnic integration in Central Eastern Europe have sought to account for the impact that institutional settings, structural conditions and elite-level interaction have on the accommodation of and conflict resolution between ethnic groups. Much existing literature has placed particular emphasis on the importance of institutional factors, both domestically and as a result of international pressure. Simultaneously, scholarship on the issue has left out of focus the contributions of non-dominant minority actors to the dynamics of interethnic relations. Where minorities are taken into account, this happens largely in terms of their failure to recognise structural opportunities for their inclusion into majority society. This study analyses interethnic integration in the Central Eastern European context from the perspective of structuration theory. Structuration theory provides a sound theoretical foundation in order to study non-dominant agency and its impact on the structures of integration, owing to its ability to reconcile dichotomies. The thesis comprises a comparative case study of interethnic interaction in Estonia and Slovakia, focusing on the Russian-speaking and the Hungarian minority respectively. A structuration approach is applied to the empirical findings in order to problematise practices of integration and their constraints that lie in the institutional and interaction context of Estonian and Slovak post-Communist society. I argue that although Russian-speakers in Estonia and Hungarians in Slovakia are constrained by institutional environs and majority-dominated structures, minority members actively participate in and shape institution-building and group formation in their interaction with majorities. Minority integration is analysed in terms of the minorities’ co-operation within, counteraction against and formulation of alternatives to the status quo structures of interethnic relations.

The on-going global economic difficulties and the subsequent increases in unemployment have led the UK government to look at innovative ways of reintegrating unemployed people back into work. Nowhere is this more critical than in the area of youth unemployment, which in the UK is steadily rising for young people aged 16-24 years who are not in employment, education or training (NEET). As part of this strategy work-integration social enterprises (WISEs) have become providers of employment enhancement programmes (EEPs) that aim to improve the employability of NEETs, in part due to the 'added value' that WISEs are seen to bring to such programmes. However, this perception, along with the requirements of public funding contracts, creates a pressure on WISEs to demonstrate such 'added value' through rigorous evaluation procedures. However, there is little academic research that both attempts to measure WISE performance in relation to 'outcomes' and to understand how organisational type and structure affects this. This research study takes a comparative, multi-case study approach to study three separate work-integration organisations delivering EEPs to NEETs. Two of these organisations are WISEs and the other organisation is a 'for-profit' private company utilised in this study as a comparison group. In order to provide a rigorous measure of outcome, all participants completed three different self-efficacy scales and engaged in individual semi-structured interviews with researchers before and after engagement in their respective programmes (Time 1 & Time 2). Results from the qualitative analysis of the interviews and the statistical analysis of the questionnaire data are triangulated to evaluate the outcome from all three programmes, providing the participant perspective alongside changes in self-efficacy. In addition, semi-structured interviews and focus groups were held with the owners and staff at the organisations respectively, in order to elicit understanding of how the differing aims, values and structures present at each organisation impacted upon the delivery of the programmes and hence upon the outcome benefits experienced by the NEETs. The results of the research provide an opportunity to compare and contrast programmes delivered by social enterprises with that of a 'for-profit' company in order to give an insight into programme and outcome differences based upon the orientation of the delivery organisation. Results revealed no significant difference between the outcome benefits experienced by the NEETs at the WISEs and those NEETs present at the for-profit comparison group. However, analysis of the effect of the organisational aims, values and structures upon the delivery of EEPs, suggests that the 'added value' offered by WISEs, whilst not immediately evident in the outcome data, came from the induction policies that they operated and their willingness to work with more socially excluded individuals.

The variables communication skills, state anxiety, communication apprehension, and level of integration are studied in relation to the assimilation of Alaskan Natives into a western-culture university. Specifically, the differences in communication skills between the two cultures and their effects on course grades are addressed. Results of the statistical analyses (ANOVA, MANOVA, discriminant function analysis, multiple regression) were not significant, most likely due to the small Alaskan Native sample size. The most significant relationship appeared between situational communication apprehension and the ethnicity of the interaction partner. Other results were directional, indicating that variables may be related to assimilation of Native students into a western university environment. Further research and replication is warranted, using an adequate sample of Alaskan Natives.

The thesis examines four films by Lee Han—Wandeugi (2011), Thread of Lies (2013), A Melody to Remember (2016) and Innocent Witness (2019)—that highlight disability problems in contemporary South Korea. While exposing the prejudice against and misunderstanding of people with disabilities embedded in society, these motion pictures promote social integration through development of trusted relationships and effective communication within familial structures. The representations of disability indicate that the cinematic images of exclusion can reinforce disabled characters' marginalized identity and promote inclusive efforts among the viewer at the same time. Through textual, cultural, theoretical analysis, it is argued that the films progressively decrease discriminative description of disability and gradually empower isolated individuals, making Innocent Witness an exemplary disability rights film.

To identify key issues concerning the use of Swedish Radio’s podcasts as a vehicle for social marketing to promote integration, a thematic analysis was conducted on podcasts published by the Kurdish department of Swedish Radio (SR) during one week. From a total of 37 published podcasts which were analyzed during the chosen time frame, three central themes were identified: (a) crime and criminality, (b) incidents and events related to different municipalities and at state level in Sweden at the time, and (c) issues related to refugees and immigration in Sweden. Each of these central themes comprised sub-themes, which provided further insights into the type of topics the Kurdish department of SR discussed during the one-week time span. Data from this study suggests that although SR Kurdish has the means to be used as a social marketing tool to promote integration in Sweden, this potential is far from being fully utilized.
För att identifiera huvudproblematiken beträffande användandet av Sveriges Radio’s (SR) podcast som ett socialt verktyg för att stärka integrationen, utarbetades en tematisk analys över podcasts publicerade av den kurdiska avdelningen på SR under en vecka. Från totalt 37 publicerade podcasts, togs tre stycken teman fram: (a) brott och kriminalitet, (b) olyckor och incidenter relaterade till olika kommuner och på statlig nivå i Sverige, och (c) frågeställningar relaterade till flyktingar och immigration i Sverige. I varje centralt tema är det ett flertal underteman som ger en ökad insikt i vilken typ av ämnen den kurdiska avdelningen på SR diskuterade under den angivna tidsperioden. Utifrån denna studie kan det fastställas att även om den kurdiska avdelningen på SR användes som ett socialt verktyg för att stärka integrationen, är potentialen av detta långt ifrån fullt utnyttjad.

Zempty, the booking software, provides an alternative value when compared to the competition of other social network and travel booking websites. By offering the secondary value of psychological and physiological benefits from social integration, Zempty will attract early adopters of innovative products. Although more flights are considered an ecological trade-off, the solution of bringing people together (and out of isolation) will definitely provide benefits. For the alternative value of Fun Flights to be realized, it will take a significant amount of leadership to ensure the software is being utilized to its full potential. Essentially, leadership will have to make certain that travelers are using the software to connect and communicate with similar people, and not just booking a flight. This will certainly take an innovative and motivated leadership team, as well as a creative strategy. It is also important to see through the connectivity aspect created by the social networking software to the environment created on the flights. Zempty is positioned to give users a sense of belongingness through our social network. Through connectivity and interaction, Fun Flights' customers will feel a sense of social integration, which has proven relevant for the promotion of psychological and physiological well-being.

The aim of this study was to seek an understanding of how media presents integration within the market of labour, with focus on problems and its causes, after the refugee crisis in 2015. Our approach has been the analyzing of 24 discussion articles from three different newspapers which are; Aftonbladet, Svenska Dagbladet and Dagens Nyheter.   Our study is a qualitative document study and we have used Fairclough’s three-dimensional model to analyze our empirical material. Our focus has been to analyze the language in the articles, the context of the texts and how that can influence or change the social practice. To analyze the articles, we have used various color codes, which have made it easier to split the articles in different themes. Furthermore, we have applied Søren Barlebo Wenneberg’s version of the social construction theory. He chose to divide the theory in four different pieces, whereas we have chosen the one we thought would contribute most with a deeper understanding to our study. Finally, we have used relevant literature as well as the notion of stigma by Erving Goffman.   We found that, among other things, politicians are pushing for many reforms that is lacking in society, such as lower wages regarding the employment of refugees or more combinations of jobs and education. Their approach has been to convey this to the public through the media. The results also showed that throughout the articles seldom were refugees who spoke. Something that dominated the media was the response of different politicians, experts or professionals about the failed integration. Their response was almost always about more or less education, as well as low-paid jobs and which one that was the best option, depending on the opinion of the author.

Begreppet mångfald diskuteras allt oftare i samhällsdebatten och valet av uppsatsämne kändes därför naturligt. Syftet med vår undersökning var att beskriva etnisk mångfald och integration på två arbetsplatser inom bankvärlden.

Undersökningen genomfördes på två banker som aktivt valt att anställa invandrare. Vi använde oss av en kvalitativ metod och halvstrukturerade intervjuer och genomförde totalt tio stycken. Resultaten visade att bankerna befinner sig i ett startskede där det än så länge främst är i rekryteringsprocessen samt inom ramen för kundanpassning som tankar om tillvaratagande av etnisk mångfald återfinns. Det finns även en skillnad vad gäller hur de anställda med utländsk bakgrund integrerats i bankerna. I Bank 1 har det skett en viss anpassning till den svenska majoritetskulturens normer och värderingar och övervägande återfinns ett tillvaratagande av olikhet på grund av kulturell bakgrund inom arbetsgruppen. I Bank 2 har det främst skett en anpassning till majoritetskulturen och olikhet betonas inte.

De anställdas upplevelse av att ha blivit anställda på grund av sina språkkunskaper är positiv och deras arbetssituation beskrivs som tillfredställande. Den påstådda ojämlikheten i samhället där människor med utländsk bakgrund är underordnade dem med svensk bakgrund återspeglas till viss del i de undersökta bankerna.

Research suggests that college students persist in college when they feel connected to something or someone at their institution. These connections are often established through academic and social engagement. Tinto (1987) described these concepts as academic integration and social integration. Much research has been done regarding the importance of academic and social integration. Some have looked at technologyâ s impact on the ways in which students achieve social and academic integration. However, there has been little research regarding how the current student population uses Instant Messaging to supplement traditional behaviors associated with academic and social engagement. The present study was designed to address these gaps in the present literature on social and academic integration. The purpose of this study was to examine how college students use Instant Messenger (IM). Specifically, the present study explored if college students use IM to supplement traditional behaviors associated with academic and social integration. Data were collected from emailed IM conversations, logsheets submitted by the participants, and answers to IM survey questions. The results of the analysis of these data were compared to Gatzâ s (1998) lists of traditional behaviors associated with academic and social integration. Results seem to suggest that college students use Instant Messaging for primarily social purposes. When students engage socially through IM, it is most often used to connect or stay connected with friends. Interestingly, the majority of the friends college students are Instant Messaging are fellow students from their home institution. When students do use IM for academic purposes, it is most often used to set up project meeting times or ask questions about a class.

This dissertation aims to provide a strong contribution to the public debate which centres on health and social care integration in England. With ever increasing demands on the health and social care system, politicians have championed the integration between the two sectors as a major element to cope with this challenge. Indeed, verbal opposition to this policy is scarce, yet integration efforts do not tend to be readily observable and wide-spread. Moreover, service redesign efforts cost multiple millions of pounds, therefore, what could be done to improve these processes is critical and pertinent at this time of great challenge for our care services. The main objective of the goal-directed research in this dissertation is to uncover to what extent social psychological processes play a role in this seeming ‘disconnect’ between what people ‘say’ and what they actually ‘do’. To create this insight, a series of five social studies were designed using a mixed research methods approach, using new and interactive technology to capture this data. A total of sixty-three individuals volunteered to participate in the study. The results indicate that comparatively healthcare participants indicate higher levels of social empathy, social perspective taking, and willingness to reach out and share funding with those in social care during the explicit studies. Yet, the implicit data suggest a moderate to strong automatic preference for healthcare over social care by participants from the healthcare sector. The findings in this cast a certain doubt over the use of traditional behavioural analysis techniques such as surveys and interviews. We provide a way forward to increase the validity of these methods and provide recommendations for policy for health and social care integration in England.

This study is based on a qualitative approach that analyzes data collected through semi-structured interview. The purpose of this study is to increase our understanding of the Swedish integration policy in the labor market. I do this by painting a picture of how the first generation of immigrants from Burundi who moved to Sweden between 2000 and 2005, men and women, experienced their integration into the labor market in Sweden. Method used in this work is a qualitative interview analysis, the text is transcribed with the use of intelligent Verbatim. By reviewing the respondents' feedback based on the theories of human capital, social capital and state capital, the decision-makers' adaptation of policies on labor market integration enlighten.  However, civil society, whose contribution is not taken in the reflection of decision-makers, can play a predominant role in the economic integration of immigrants.   Keywords: labor market policy, Integration, Respondent human capital, social capital

Studiens syfte är att undersöka fem personers upplevelser av integration i Östersunds kommun. Alla fem personer är födda och uppvuxna i ett annat land än Sverige och har kommit till Sverige för ungefär två år sedan. Studien lägger stor vikt på den enskildes subjektiva känslor i möten och interaktioner som äger rum i olika sociala sammanhang som t.ex. vardagssituationer eller myndighetskontakter. Studien analyserar och diskuterar huruvida personer med s.k. invandrarbakgrund känner sig integrerade och som en likvärdig del av samhället. Den tar kritiskt ställning till olika teoretiska ansatser om integration och kommer fram till att synen på personer med s.k. invandrarbakgrund måste förändras från problemsyn och krav på assimillering till resurssyn och mångfald som ska gälla på alla livsområden. Uppsatsen är utförd utifrån en kvalitativ metod med halvstrukturerade intervjuer inom följande områden: känslan av bemötandet av lokalbefolkningen, vänskapskontakter med lokalbefolkningen, upplevelser av boendesegregation, bemötandet på skola och arbetsplats, upplevelser av fördomar och diskriminering samt bemötandet av myndigheter. Studien visar att upplevelsen av integration är subjektiv och individuell. Gemensamma upplevelser är brist på social kontakt med lokalbefolkningen samt en positiv bedömning av såväl svenska statens åtgärder mot diskriminering som också Östersunds kommun introduktionsstöd för invandrare.

This study explores three dimensions in the integration of Iranian immigrants in Sweden: economic, cultural and social. To test the generalisability of the ideas presented, and to place them in a wider framework the integration of Iranians has been compared with those of three other minorities: Chileans, Poles, and Finns. Data used in the statistical analyses have been obtained from the Centre for Research in International Migration and Ethnic relations (CEIFO). Economic integration of an immigrant group in a new society has been defined as its economic equality with the host population. The first part dealing with this aspect of integration compares Iranians with Swedes by three economic indicators: the ratio of unemployment, socio-economic status and income. By all indicators Iranians hold a considerably lower position as compared with Swedes. Both socio-demographic factors related to the Iranians and discrimination exercised by Swedish employers have been found to be relevant to the economic integration of Iranians in Sweden. The comparison of Iranians with the three other minorities, in terms of discrimination, indicates that the discrimination of these minorities corresponds to their cultural distance from Swedes. Iranians, with the remotest culture from Swedes among the four minorities, suffer the highest degree of discrimination. Finns, with the closest culture, suffer the lowest degree of discrimination. And the two other minorities lie between these two groups, respectively. Discrimination manifests itself mainly in a differential size of incomes which derives from the differential distribution of these groups among the least desirable occupations. The second part dealing with cultural integration evaluates the adaptation of Iranian to Swedish culture by two indicators representing cognitive and normative acculturation. This part is especially focused on the proposition that the westernisation process in Iran and differential reactions against this process are relevant in the acculturation of Iranians in Sweden. Two hypotheses formulated on the basis of this proposition- the negative effects of commitment to Iranian culture and radicalism on the acculturation of Iranians in Sweden- have been supported by the indicator of normative acculturation, but not by that of cognitive acculturation. The comparison of the four minorities has demonstrated that generalities, clustering and uniqueness all exist among the factors explaining their acculturation. The generalities and clustering are more striking in cognitive acculturation. Similarities are more evident between Iranians and Chileans. Finally, the last part dealing with social integration concentrates on the association of Iranians with Swedes. Assuming that association of two individuals with each other requires a common language and a minimum degree of intersubjectivity, it has been generally hypothesised that: 1) social integration of minorities in the new society will be a function of their cultural distance from the host population, and 2) all processes contributing to the increasing or decreasing of cultural distance will contribute also to the increasing or decreasing of their social integration. On the basis of these general hypotheses the following concrete hypotheses have been tested. 1) Among the four minorities, Iranians, as culturally remotest from Swedes, will have the least degree of social integration, followed by Chileans, Poles and Finns, respectively. 2) Commitment of Iranians to Iranian culture, as a medium increasing cultural distance, will correlate negatively with their social integration in Sweden. 3) Countercultural elements in Swedish society, as a medium of cultural-distance reduction, will contribute to the social integration of immigrants in this society. All hypotheses have been supported by the existing data.

I Sverige föreligger en ringa forskning som berör amatörboxningens sociala betydelse. Detta gäller även den internationella arenan. En generell uppfattning är att boxning är en sport som mestadels utövas av grupper som har sina rötter i lägre sociala klassen. Den ringa forskning som finns visar att personer som söker sig till amatörboxning ofta kommer från en segregerad miljö med begränsade ekonomiska resurser. I vissa fall avviker de från samhällets normer. Anledningen till det kan grunda sig på brister i utbildning och kanske även ett kriminellt beteende. Forskare menar att boxning, inom ramen för en form av socialt arbete, kan hjälpa ungdomar som befinner sig i riskzon. Vår artikel har haft som syfte att kartlägga miljöer ur vilka amatörboxare rekryteras och när de har rekryterats, redovisa och diskutera vilka upplevelser av livskvalité som gäller för dem i dagsläget. För att uppnå syftet med vår studie har vi använt och bearbetat en inom projektet ’En rak vänster’ tidigare genomförd datainsamling. Resultatet av vår undersökning visar att amatörboxning kan uppfattas som ett verktyg för integration i samhället.

This thesis reports on an information behaviour investigation into refugee integration, undertaken to understand how refugees navigate complex integration processes and systems. The aim was to find person-centred information needs, relationships and sources that could inform the design of person-centred integration systems. The study was carried out through an interdisciplinary synthesis of academic literatures and professional practice. Theories of information behaviour were synthesised with principles in refugee integration into a theoretical framework founded on Dervin's sense-making methodology. The research data were collected by interviews and observations, such that the observation data substantiated interview findings. A diverse population of refugees were interviewed directly and observation of service provision was recorded during a volunteer role with the Scottish Refugee Council. The data analysis was process-driven and dynamic, using an iterative process of thematic coding. This resulted in pertinent institutional dimensions being factored into the identification of information needs. The research findings culminated in an information needs matrix - a navigational guide with implications for research, policy and practice. The study found connections between people, information and sociological needs as refugees navigate integration processes and systems. In addition, the experiences of navigating integration systems were tied to specific times, places and human conditions. This relationship resulted in the information needs matrix, which encompasses the complexities of navigating integration systems and points to refugee integration being as much an information issue as it is a sociological one.

Efficient navigation of our social world depends on the generation, interpretation and combination of social signals within different sensory systems. However, the influence of adult aging on cross-modal integration of emotional stimuli remains poorly understood. Therefore, the aim of this PhD thesis is to understand the integration of visual and auditory cues in social situations and how this is associated with other factors important for successful social interaction such as recognising emotions or understanding the mental states of others. A series of eight experiments were designed to compare the performance of younger and older adults on tasks related to multisensory integration and social cognition. Results suggest that older adults are significantly less accurate at correctly identifying emotions from one modality (faces or voices alone) but perform as well as younger adults on tasks where congruent auditory and visual emotional information are presented concurrently. Therefore, older adults appear to benefit from congruent multisensory information. In contrast, older adults are poorer than younger adults at detecting incongruency from different sensory modalities involved in decoding cues to deception, sarcasm or masking of emotions. It was also found that age differences in the processing of relevant and irrelevant visual and auditory social information might be related to changes in gaze behaviour. A further study demonstrated that the changes in behaviour and social interaction often reported in patients post-stroke might relate to problems in integrating the cross-modal social information. The pattern of findings is discussed in relation to social, emotional, neuropsychological and cognitive theories.

Relational demographers and dissimilarity researchers contend that group members who are dissimilar (vs. similar) to their peers in terms of a given diversity attribute (e.g. demographics, attitudes, values or traits) feel less attached to their work group, experience less satisfying and more conflicted relationships with their colleagues, and consequently are less effective. However, qualitative reviews suggest empirical findings tend to be weak and inconsistent (Chattopadhyay, Tluchowska and George, 2004; Riordan, 2000; Tsui and Gutek, 1999), and that it remains unclear when, how and to what extent such differences (i.e. relational diversity) affect group members social integration (i.e. attachment with their work group, satisfaction and conflicted relationships with their peers) and effectiveness (Riordan, 2000). This absence of meta-analytically derived effect size estimates and the lack of an integrative theoretical framework leave practitioners with inconclusive advice regarding whether the effects elicited by relational diversity are practically relevant, and if so how these should be managed. The current research develops an integrative theoretical framework, which it tests by using meta-analysis techniques and adding two further empirical studies to the literature. The first study reports a meta-analytic integration of the results of 129 tests of the relationship between relational diversity with social integration and individual effectiveness. Using meta-analytic and structural equation modelling techniques, it shows different effects of surface- and deep-level relational diversity on social integration Specifically, low levels of interdependence accentuated the negative effects of surface-level relational diversity on social integration, while high levels of interdependence accentuated the negative effects of deep-level relational diversity on social integration. The second study builds on a social self-regulation framework (Abrams, 1994) and suggests that under high levels of interdependence relational diversity is not one but two things: visibility and separation. Using ethnicity as a prominent example it was proposed that separation has a negative effect on group members effectiveness leading for those high in visibility and low in separation to overall positive additive effects, while to overall negative additive effects for those low in visibility and high in separation. These propositions were sustained in a sample of 621 business students working in 135 ethnically diverse work groups in a business simulation course over a period of 24 weeks. The third study suggests visibility has a positive effect on group members self-monitoring, while separation has a negative effect. The study proposed that high levels of visibility and low levels of separation lead to overall positive additive effects on self-monitoring but overall negative additive effects for those low in visibility and high in separation. Results from four waves of data on 261 business students working in 69 ethnically diverse work groups in a business simulation course held over a period of 24 weeks support these propositions.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Currently much attention is given in South African welfare legislation and in recent local and intemationalliterature and research to the process of social integration and the formation of social capital as one of the ideational outcomes of a social development approach, and therefore also a key practice element of developmental social work. Very little research have been undertaken to document the changes in social work practice brought about by the transition to a social development approach in South Africa. The purpose of this study is to formulate social work practice guidelines on the facilitation of social integration on community level. It therefore constitutes an attempt to illuminate how social workers could contribute to the national thrust toward the social integration of communities and provide valuable guidelines to social workers on the practical realization of this key element of developmental social work. In order to gain new insight and to clarify central concepts relating to this relatively unfamiliar research area, an exploratory research design was utilised. The population for the study consisted of practising social workers in welfare agencies subsidised by the Department of Social Services in the Cape Metropolitan area. From the population a sample was drawn utilising sampling strategies from both the probability and non-probability sampling procedures. The study was both qualitative and quantitative in nature and in-dept interviews were chosen as the method of datacollection. The interview schedule was compiled from the literature survey. In this survey the relation between the social development approach to welfare and social integration was explained, and some of the core focus areas for the social integration of South African communities were identified. Furthermore a discussion was given on community intervention strategies as a core method of social work as well as its practice implications for developmental social work. From this literature survey structured and unstructured questions were formulated and compiled in an interview schedule. This measurement instrument was utilised to explore how social workers can facilitate the social integration of communities through community intervention strategies. From the analysis ofthe results of the empirical study, social work practice guidelines on the facilitation of social integration on community level were formulated.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Huidige Suid-Afrikaanse welsynsbeleid asook kontemporêre plaaslike en internasionale literatuur en navorsing plaas verhoogde klem op die proses van maatskaplike integrasie en die vorming van sosiale kapitaal as een van die uitkomste van 'n sosiale ontwikkeling benadering en 'n kern praktyk element van ontwikkelingsgerigte maatskaplike werk. Tans is daar nog min navorsing gedoen wat poog om die praktyk implikasies, wat die skuifna 'n ontwikkelingsgerigte benadering vir maatskaplike werk inhou, te dokumenteer. Die doel van hierdie studie is om maatskaplike werk praktykriglyne vir die fasilitering van maatskaplike integrasie op gemeenskapsvlak te formuleer. Die studie vergestalt dus 'n poging om die rol van maatskaplike werkers in die strewe na die maatskaplike integrasie van gemeenskappe te probeer verhelder, asook om aan maatskaplike werkers waardevolle riglyne te voorsien rondom die praktiese realisering van hierdie kern element van ontwikkelingsgerigte maatskaplike werk. This study focused on social work students’ views on the integration of religion in social work. This study allowed students to gain knowledge and insight on the importance of discussing religion with clients. The study examined social worker students’ experiences during their involvement in the social work program which looked into how prepared they were in situations where religion was necessary to discuss with clients and other outcomes. Qualitative interviews were conducted with ten participants who discussed their experiences in internships during their involvement within the social work program. Participants were in different years in the BASW and MSW program and were from various ethnicity, age, gender, and specializations. Main findings were that participants believed religion plays a huge role in clients’ everyday lives and that the social work program is not teaching students how to discuss religion with clients during their internships. Another finding was that a few social work students were not prepared to discuss clients’ religious practices. Agency employers also discouraged social work students from discussing clients’ religious practice. This study enhances the social work profession and allow social workers to better service diverse and cultural clients by highlighting the importance of religion in some clients’ lives. The social work profession can improve the quality of service that is given to clients that have a religious practice and can be assessed for appropriate services based on their individual needs. Social work students can learn to integrate this topic into their assessments.

MetodMaterialet för undersökningen har samlats in genom kvalitativa samtalsintervjuer, dessa har jämförts dels med varandra och dels med tidigare forskning. Vi har varit i kontakt med två olika föräldragrupper, en i Spanien och en i Sverige.ResultatSkolvalet kan ses som ett aktivt deltagande i samhället genom det aktiva val som det innebär att välja. Båda respondentgrupperna är överens om att det är viktigt att integreras och att det största ansvaret ligger hos invandrarna. Anledningarna till att man väljer en skola som speglar den egna kulturen är ofta desamma. Man vill utgå ifrån den egna kulturen för att barnen ska få en trygg och stabil upplevelse av sin egen identitet utifrån vilken de kan möta samhället i det nya landet. De närliggande kommunala skolorna har också ofta en viss betydelse för valet eftersom man upplever misstro gentemot dem, både vad gäller disciplin, arbetsro och den höga andelen invandrare.

This study was designed to gain a better understanding of whether electronic mail (email) was replacing traditional behaviors in which college students engage to achieve academic and social integration. Data consisted of printouts of email records, and corresponding logsheets detailing the relationship of the participant to the sender/receiver of each message and the general nature of the message. Additional data included answers to email survey questions and lists of traditional academic and social integration behaviors against which the email behavior categories were compared. Specifically, this study was designed to explore the following research questions: 1. For what purpose do students use email? 2. Do college students use email in lieu of traditional behaviors that lead to social integration? 3. Do college students use email in lieu of traditional behaviors that lead to academic integration? 4. Does students' use of email differ by gender? Two samples were selected for this study. The first consisted of a comprehensive list, compiled from nationally normed survey instruments, of traditional behaviors that students use to achieve academic and social integration. The second sample consisted of 23 traditional-aged freshmen who used email (11 males and 12 females). Results were based on an analysis of 4,603 messages sent or received by the participants and revealed several important findings. First, while the participants did use email for some academic and social integration purposes, the bulk of their email activity did not relate to either form of integration. Second, participants seemed to be using email to communicate extensively with family members and high school friends. Third, there were no major differences in either the extent of email use or the nature of that use by gender. Finally, the participants spent a considerable amount of time every day checking, writing, composing and sending email messages. These trends suggest that email has become an integral part of college student life and that college administrators need to explore new and effective ways to ensure that the use of email is beneficial, not detrimental, to the overall development of college students.

Problemformulering: Äldre invandrare är en växande grupp i vårt samhälle. Äldre emigrerar till Sverige på grund av olika skäl, bland annat för krig, kärlek, ekonomiska förutsättningar eller för att vara nära sina anhöriga. Äldre invandrare har alla specifika upplevelser samt erfarenheter, vi finner det båda relevant och intressant att undersöka hur äldre invandrare ser sin integration i samhället. Syftet: med denna undersökning är hur äldre invandare ser sin integration i samhället och hur pass delaktig man är. Metoden: i denna studie består av kvalitativa intervjuer. Det är sju intervjuer och alla är äldre invandrare. Resultat: vissa av respondenterna känner sig integrerade och delaktiga i samhället medan andra respondenter känner sig utanför och några känner sig isolerade. Problem: Elderly immigrants are a growing group in our society. Elderly immigrate to Sweden for different reason like war, love, and economic conditions or to be near their families. Elderly immigrants have different and special experiences we find it both relevant and interesting to explore how elderly immigrants see their integration into society. The aim: this study is how elderly immigrants see their integration in the community and how involved they are. Method: the method in this study is selected interviews. A total of seven elderly immigrants have been interviewed. Result: some of the respondents feel integrated and involved in the community while others respondents feel left out and some feel isolated. This thesis is based on thirteen qualitative interviews with civil servants and politicians. The purpose of the study is to research these informants’ attitudes towards integration and their reflections about immigrants’ lower chances in an ethnically segregated housing and labour market. The theoretical frame of references is based on social constructionism and focuses on including and excluding power structures. The empirical material provides both structural and cultural explanations to immigrants’ problems as regards inclusion in Swedish society. The informants talk about integration as a mutual process and emphasise everybody’s responsibility. Despite this interpretation, comprehensions based on imagined differences between immigrants and natives appear, as well as immigrants’ losses in language, educational background and unequal gender structures. These common sense understandings may conceal unequal structures and discriminating practices in Swedish society.

This study involves ten unaccompanied refugees´ experiences of integration in to the swedish society. The main purpose of this study is to understand how the integration process has been for these ten unaccompanied refugees using qualitative methods. The unaccompanied refugees who are involved in this study have fled from Syria and Afghanistan and are eighteen to twenty-two years old. We analyse the respondents’ experiences and thoughts concerning their integration in Sweden. The theoretical framework and interpretation of integration that is used in this study is Alberto Diaz theory about seven different dimensions that measures what is required for a successful integration. In addition, this study applies social capital as a way of understanding why these refugees are in a certain stage and the opportunities and constraints that may exist of mobilizing resources. This study shows the importance of learning the Swedish language, individual motivation and for how long they have been in the country as some of the main results.

The ongoing process of economic integration in Europe and beyond has already led to profound changes that are likely to manifest themselves further. Within Europe, formerly centrally planned economies have joined the European Union (EU) with the intention to ultimately introduce the common currency. On a more global scale, marginalised farmers in developing countries seek to become integrated in the world trading system to lift themselves out of poverty. However, issues surrounding economic inequalities are no longer exclusively confined to emerging economies. Indeed, awareness of income inequalities and their impact on the domestic economy is increasing among industrialised nations. This dissertation seeks to contribute to these topical debates in the form of three self-contained essays. The first essay is concerned with monetary integration in Europe. More specifically, we consider the EU member countries from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) that seek to adopt the euro in the foreseeable future. Our analysis is based on a global VAR (GVAR) model to investigate to what extent central banks in CEE follow the European Central Bank’s lead. We look in another core chapter at the economic implications of the Fair Trade (FT) movement. This is a fairly novel topic to the economics profession and we thus aim to provide intuitive insights. One of the key elements of our trade model is that FT generates and hinges upon economic inequalities. We combine these two aspects in the third core chapter. In particular, we analyse how monetary policy operates in an environment which is characterised by wage inequalities using a New Keynesian model that features heterogeneous labour. The third essay is motivated by the case of the United States, where, similar to many European countries, there is strong empirical evidence for rising internal economic divergence. Overall, the thesis not only combines and investigates topical issues, it moreover does so employing various techniques with the intention to also make contributions on the methodological level. We conclude the monograph by highlighting policy implications and by providing directions for future research.

In this master thesis is going to be considered how the CSR is implemented into company’s activities and strategy as well the benefits of CSR for companies, employees, clients and partners are analyzed. The center of attention is on the CSR integration. There are numerous studies emphasize on the antecedents and post internationalization behavior while there is not much study to indicate the actual mechanism of CSR integration into company’s strategy. To gather data for the research analysis were chosen sources as primary and secondary data. Primary data: the information that was gathered in the research are based on individually responds. The interviews were got from respondents by emails one on one. Secondary data: The information was collected from web sources about CSR situation in selected countries. In the end of this thesis there are given suggestions in order to increase efficiency of CSR implementation into corporate strategy.
Baigiamajame magistro darbe nagrinėjama kaip Socialinė Atsakomybė (CSR) yra diegiama į įmonės strategiją. Taip pat yra aptariama, kokius privalumus CSR suteikia įmonėms, jos darbuotojams, klientams bei partneriams. Dėmesio centre yra CSR diegimas į įmonės strategiją. Yra atlikta daug tyrimų, tačiau nėra apibrėžto aiškaus mechanizmo, kaip CSR integruoti į įmonės strategiją. Atliekant tyrimą buvo naudojama pirminiai bei antriniai duomenys. Pirminiai duomenys sudaro CSR specialistų iš skirtingų pasaulio valstybių atsakymai į klausimyną apie CSR diegimą į įmonės strategiją. Antriniai duomenys buvo surinkti interneto naršyklėje, apie pasirinktų 8 pasaulio valstybių pasiekimus CSR integracijos į verslą srityje.

The experimentation with an alternative form of theater, which questioned the tradition dramatic heritage , emerged in Puerto Rico during the second half of the 1960's. This new form of theater, known as Experimental Theater, searched for a new aesthetic language rooted in the use of the human body as an instrument of expression. At the same time, the companies and groups - composed mostly of college students - working with this kind of theater had a well-defined social, cultural and political agenda, which was clearly reflected in the nature of their performances. The tradition of the Puerto Rican Experimental Theater has survived until today. It has experienced a change in its social and political approaches, which now are focused in the reinforcement of the Puerto Rican culture and the searching for the definition of a contemporary national identity . This idea of contemporary national identity presumes the breaking with the traditional system of dramatic representation used in the classical theater as well as in the early models of theatrical experimentation. New groups work with new codes of national representation detached from convention al cannon, creating a vibrant and contested imagery. In this line of work, the Puerto Rican group Teatreros de Cayey, directed by the theater professor Rosa Luisa Marquez and the Puerto Rican artist Antonio Martorell present a paradigm in and of themselves. Marquez and Martorell propose a work based on a theatrical dialogue between dramatic text and pictorial image. At the same time their work has focused on its interaction with low income communities as well as with school and elderly hospitals and institutions. Their work is based in the assumption that people don't have to be actors to make theater and that theater can be used as a community tool in order to produce social transformations.

A sense of social belonging is an important factor for integration. The different experiences that immigrants face towards social integration were of major interest to the authors. The authors conducted a qualitative study based on the experiences that immigrants went through as well as their perceptions of social integration. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with four immigrants, ranging between 31- 42 years of age. The themes found during the analytic process were: Swedish language, social networks and information, identifying yourself and culture. The most important findings were that social workers and other persons in authorities were important for establishing contacts with native-born, as they introduced them to activities that led to interaction with native Swedish. Social activities, in particular, seemed to play an important role in establishing contact with native-born and creating a social network.

Asylsökande står idag inför långa väntetider vilket kan bidra till osäkerhet och psykisk ohälsa hos individer. Detta kan i sin tur leda till depression. Ideella organisationer i civilsamhället erbjuder många insatser av integrerande karaktär till asylsökande. Kommunen erbjuder främst insatser till personer med beviljat uppehållstillstånd, vilket innebär att ideella organisationer fångar upp de som fortfarande väntar på besked om uppehållstillstånd. Syftet med studien var därför att kritiskt granska de insatser som ideella organisationer erbjuder asylsökande och hur personal upplever att dessa insatser uppfyller asylsökandes behov av integration, samt hur detta kan förstås. Insamlingen av materialet utfördes genom sex stycken intervjuer med personal som arbetar på ideella organisationer med integration och asylsökande i Umeå kommun. Vi använde oss sedan utav en interpretativ fenomenologisk analys för att analysera det insamlade materialet. Resultatet tolkades sedan i förhållande till tidigare forskning och Diaz integrationsteori. Studien visade att de ideella organisationerna syftar till att överbrygga klyftan mellan asylsökande och lokalbefolkningen genom att skapa sociala nätverk och mötesplatser. Detta är de ideella organisationernas syn på integration, något som skapas tillsammans. Sociala nätverk ansågs ligga till grund för arbete och trygghet, vilket påvisades vara av betydande roll för integrationen. Trygghet var en styrka som framkom som unik för ideella organisationer. Även deras möjlighet till att kunna vara kreativa, flexibla och effektiva. Strukturella problem i form av att systematiskt nå ut till asylsökande var en svårighet vi såg utifrån vårt resultat. Även svårigheter med att förstå de svenska systemen och myndigheterna upplevdes som ett strukturellt problem. Den slutsats vi kunde dra från vår studie är att det skulle kunna behövas en mer utbyggd samverkan mellan kommun och ideella organisationer med fokus på långsiktiga insatser för att kunna skapa relationer, som enligt oss i sin tur kan leda till en förbättrad integration. Men även för att underlätta för asylsökande att komma i kontakt med myndigheter och för ideella organisationer att samarbeta bättre med kommunen. Eftersom de ideella organisationerna erbjuder insatser till alla går det inte att säga exakt vilken påverkan de har för just asylsökandes integration.
Asylum seekers are today facing long periods of waiting for notice about their permits. The long periods of waiting can contribute to uncertainty and mental illness which can lead to developing depression. Asylum seekers are not being offered the same services from the municipality as people who have received their resident permit. Non-governmental organisations offer services to asylum seekers, they therefore have an important role in their integration process. The aim of this study was to critically examine the services that non-governmental organisations offer to asylum seekers, with focus on if the staff feel that the need of the asylum seekers is being met, and how this could be understood. The data for this study was collected by means of six interviews with staff from non-governmental organisations, who work with asylum seekers and integration in Umeå municipality. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was used to analyse the data collected and interpreted in relation to previous research and Diaz integration theory. This study indicates that non-governmental organisations aim to bridge the gap between asylum seekers and locals. This is achieved by creating meeting grounds for this interaction to occur, which is the respondents view on integration. Something that is created together. Social networks were considered to be a foundation which later leads to employment and comfort. This was proven to be an important role for integration. A unique strength with non-governmental organisations was considered to be the feeling of comfort that they bestow. But also, their ability to be creative, flexible and efficient. Systematically reaching out to asylum seekers was found to be a structural problem. Understanding the Swedish systems and the authorities was also considered to be a structural problem. In conclusion, we believe that a more developed cooperation between the civil society and the municipality, with focus on long term services may be needed in order to improve the integration process. But also, to facilitate for asylum seekers to be in contact with authorities and for non-governmental organisations to cooperate better with the municipality. It is difficult to draw a specific conclusion about the effect non-governmental services has for asylum seekers integration, since they offer their services to everyone.
