Many studies have researched how organisations can benefit from Knowledge Management (KM). Critical factors, models and frameworks for successful implementations of KM have informed practitioners in different industries and countries. However, there is still a need for exploring other dimensions of KM as well as its application in different contexts. Further empirical evidence and operationalisation, which assure successful implementations, is also needed to improve not only companies but also society in general. Building on that observation, this study presents conceptual and empirical evidence to support the view that KM, understood as an organisational capability, improves organisational performance of the under-researched and increasingly important Social Enterprises (SEs). These, normally micro and small organisations, are gaining worldwide attention and importance as they address, following business principles, crucial social and environmental problems and provide more sustainable solutions. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of empirical evidence of how these organisations operate, perform and scale up. The study supports this view by developing and empirically testing a model named Knowledge Management Capabilities in Social Enterprises (KMC-SE), which is the main contribution to knowledge of this study. The model describes the organisational pre-conditions and the knowledge activities that can develop Knowledge Management Capabilities (KMCs), which then have an impact on SEs’ performance. A sequential, explanatory, mixed methods’ research design was followed to test the model with empirical evidence from 432 SEs in the UK. The evidence suggests that current KMCs account for up to 20% of overall improvements in SEs’ performance, based on a year-to-year comparison. Moreover, the KMC-SE Model proposes new insights in the traditional way of approaching KM and KMC development, highlighting (a) the important role of human and cultural factors, giving less emphasis to extrinsic motivations and technology, (b) the importance of studying informal KM practices, and (c) the essential inclusion of external dimensions into the equation. Because of the limited research in organisational characteristics of SEs, and more specifically, their KM practices, the KMC-SE Model may have omitted other important elements that were particular to these organisations in their development of KMCs, as well as their performance measures. Therefore, the obtained KMC-SE Model needs to be considered as only a starting point in the study of KM in SEs.

Purpose: To explore the variables associated with the adaptation of social worker to the role of social entrepreneur. Literature: Literature on the conflict inherent in institutional logics in hybrid organisations mostly focuses on the organisation level. The current research fills a gap in the literature by studying the conflict within the individual and identifying problematic competencies. Educators in SE programs can then design the curriculum to address these competencies. Method: The financial performance of the social enterprise (SE) is used as an indicator of the adaptation. A quantitative survey was conducted among 42 social enterprise managers. Findings: Years of SE experience and supportiveness for the practice of dismissing employees were associated with the adaptation. Moreover, the pace of adaptation slowed around the end of the third year of SE experience. In those novice participants with less than three years of SE experience, both the year of SE experience and leadership skills were associated with the adaptation. In those experienced participants with three or more years of experience, only their supportiveness for the practice of reviewing productivity was associated with the adaptation. Finally, when comparing the novice group and the experienced group, the mean of the leading skills changed significantly, but no significant change was found in the level of support for the three practices of dismissing employees, leadership skills, and reviewing productivity. Research limitations: The association of these four variables (years of SE experience, dismissing employees, leadership skills, and reviewing productivity) with the adaptation to the role of social entrepreneur may not be generalized to situations outside Hong Kong.

As the field of Social Enterprises has strongly grown over two decades, the importance of Social Enterprises for the society has also grown and still developing, more and more to a third economic segment between the private and public economy. Within this study we explain how “Small and Medium sized Social Enterprises” (SMSEs) can face the increasing pressure to measure and demonstrate their impact to society and their stakeholders. We especially address the limitations in skill and resource endowment, which SMSEs most commonly face. We execute this research based on a practical and outcome-oriented method and therefore apply an overall pragmatic research philosophy. The research is further designed around a narrative strategy, with an exploratory mono method cross-sectional study. For the collection of empirical data, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with (Social) Entrepreneurs and their stakeholders. This study finds a language barrier between SMSEs and their commercial stakeholders, caused by low willingness from the Social Entrepreneurs’ side to adapt to a commercial business language. The findings of this study further imply that SMSEs are capable of using surveys to measure their performance quantitatively, in terms of in- and output. More importantly, our results suggest that these measurements, completed with additional “soft” measurements to “qualified narratives”, are sufficient to prove the SMSEs’ performance to their stakeholders. Finally, this study takes up an existing contingency model and enriches it with the revealed discoveries, to a more comprehensive measurement approach for SMSEs. It thereby contributes to the field of Social Enterprises and lays valuable foundations for further research.

Fire prevention is a critical component in achieving social welfare and prosperity. The lack of worldwide fire prevention leads to an increasing number of fires, as well as to a greater number of fire-related deaths, injuries, and fire-related property damage. Traditionally, fire prevention has been the responsibility of individual governments, while fire prevention duties are usually carried out by local fire departments. Such an approach is very common and is observed globally. Until now, the above response has been successful. For example, due to fire prevention measures applied in the 1990s, the number of fires caused by open flames (such as candles) was significantly reduced. Since 2014, the number of fires in some Western countries (e.g., the US and the UK) shows an increasing trend. In March 2019,11, people have died in fires across Connecticut (O’Neill 2019). From 2017 to 2018, the number of people who died in fires in Mississippi grew by more than 40 percent (Moore 2019). Among the main reasons for this growth are new combustible materials, reduced fire prevention funds, and more dynamic lifestyles. Lack of fire prevention consequently increases fire risks, and, as a result, health inequalities. According to Whitehead and Dahlgren (2007), health inequalities are health differences that are avoidable, unjust, unfair, and unacceptable. The question arises: do current fire prevention services allow sufficient support for people to be safe from fire, specifically in domestic environments? Can social enterprises play a role and how do they fit into the fire prevention supply chain. The purpose of this research is to gain an understanding of social enterprises and their influence on supply chains, in general, and specifically for fire prevention supply chains. This phenomenon is evaluated through the lenses of social capital theory and institutional theory. Research (Rothstein and Stolle 2008) has shown the effects that social capital has on institutions, or simply how can it be used as a strategic resource (Gulati and Gargiulo 1999). Institutional and Social Capital Theories set the foundation of how social enterprises transform and contribute to sustainable supply chains, plus how they solve social problems, specifically fire safety (Patuelli and Savioli 2016). According to Wallace and Wallace (1997), social capital provides a collective resource that can be mobilized by individuals to enable communities to develop resilience against severe threats to public health, such as social exclusion or even unemployment. By identifying three dimensions of sustainable development: techno-economic, ecological and social (Clift 2003; Hutchins and Sutherland 2008; Yakovleva and Sarkis 2010), there are various social capital diffusion mechanisms for building sustainability within supply chains through social enterprise involvement. Transforming supply chains by building social legitimacy and by altering institutional norms, are examples of providing competitive advantages to supply chains and supply chain partners of social enterprises. This research seeks to understand social enterprises and entrepreneurship capabilities transform institutions to strengthen supply chain sustainability. Ideally, these institutions should provide solutions to the problem of decreased awareness of sustainable fire prevention, as well as available resources for fire prevention. This research focus is primarily on social sustainability and safety through fire prevention. The importance of this study lies in our contributions to help diffuse socially sustainable solutions and practices across supply chains. In this case, similar to other social concerns, the problem of fire prevention is a critical one within supply chains and society. Understanding the role of social enterprise to help diffuse these norms and practices help to understand general supply chain sustainability concerns for competitive and social reasons. Methodologically, a qualitative, exploratory method was applied. To analyze the data collected for this research, we used a Thematic Analysis. Three supply chains with social enterprises as a focal firm were investigated. This research contributes by furthering the theory of sustainable supply chains with the involvement of social enterprise; or hybrid organizations - that have both a social and a strategic financial outlook. The research involves the utilization of Thematic Analysis, and semi-structured interviews of three fire prevention-focused supply chains. This study is the first that investigates fire prevention from the perspective of supply chains and social enterprises. The results will inform other types of sustainability and social enterprises, which include humanitarian, environmental, educational, and poverty-based foci.

The degradation of the ecological and social systems has largely resulted from human activities that deplete natural resources and undermine human needs in society. Traditional business culture, driven mainly by profit maximization, is a factor that has worsened this sustainability challenge. Social enterprises (SEs) are a form of business that hold the potential to help make the transition towards a sustainable society. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, it explores SE contributions to creating a sustainable social system. Second, it examines how SEs exhibit the dimensions of trustworthiness, leading to trusting relationships in society. Social sustainability principles (SSPs) define social sustainability and are drawn from the Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development. They are used as a foundation for identifying SE contributions. The researchers draw on experiences from social entrepreneurs and experts in the field of social entrepreneurship. SEs contribute at two levels: the individual level and the societal level. They break down barriers to the SSPs and provide opportunities to individuals with respect to the five principles. SEs operate based on a culture of impartiality and create opportunities for meaning for individuals in their target groups. They consistently take leaps of faith, believing in the trustworthiness of those who are otherwise deemed untrustworthy.

This thesis assesses the potential of actor-network theory (ANT) for conceptualising social enterprise by applying the concepts of assemblage and translation to the production of social values through three fieldsites studied in Ghana. Social enterprises are companies that use market-based revenues to generate social value while maintaining financial viability. Social entrepreneurship involves using and combining resources, expertise and networks in an innovative way to achieve social value. Finally, social value makes it possible to explore well-being and common good in ways that cannot be reduced merely to individual needs and wants or to monetary quantities. The present study examines social enterprises and social entrepreneurship through three case-studies and draws lessons from nine months of fieldwork in Ghana in 2004-2005. Using actor-network theory allows us to trace and follow the three social enterprises and social entrepreneurs beyond the conventional understanding of an enterprise or an economy. Measuring and evaluating the qualities of interactions aimed at enhancing social value, social enterprises create new identified objects and realities by involving the stakeholders, users and customers in the process, not just experts, economists and accountants. These pluralistic socio-technical objects are considered in this study as assemblages. The production of social values is studied through the notion of ‘translation’ where values are gradually articulated through different stages. These propositions are studied by way of a ‘test’ in all three cases, in which various assemblages are identified according to three themes. The first theme discusses information assemblages, which is seen as a source of problematisations; the second relates to spatial assemblages and how they facilitate new associations to emerge; the third theme is credit and money; and how actors use them to enrol new resources. Finally, these resources are evaluated using either internal or external measuring tools developed for the social enterprise sector. Social values emerge through the cyclical process.

Social entrepreneurship has spread worldwide, as social entrepreneurs seek the solutions to developmental challenges. This is especially true in Nairobi, Kenya, as social entrepreneurship has established itself in the labor market. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the impact of social enterprises in African countries, especially with regards to the labor market. It is for this reason that this study aims at highlighting the impact of social enterprises on the labor market in Nairobi, Kenya. It also provides an outline of the labor market structure in Nairobi. The study employed a mixed methods approach, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches, collected concurrently as part of a concurrent triangulation design. Five social enterprises located in Nairobi were involved in the study, and were chosen through snowball sampling. These social enterprises offered direct employment, training programmes or support for beneficiaries to start their own businesses. The research instruments used in this study were as follows; 10 interviews (5 interviews with beneficiaries and 5 with social entrepreneurs), 50 questionnaires distributed to beneficiaries through random sampling, field work observations and a literature review. The results of this study were that social enterprises in Nairobi have a significant impact on the livelihoods of beneficiaries by directly employing them, providing necessary skills for later employment or supporting them to start their own businesses. However, these increases in income are often either inadequate or inconsistent as most beneficiaries are forced to diversify their livelihoods. Social enterprises also fail to reduce the gender wage gap among their beneficiaries. Social enterprises also increase market access among their beneficiaries by providing them with advice and training, as well as, direct access to customers. In the same vein, they increase the level of training of beneficiaries. This helps beneficiaries improve their relations with customers, produce high quality goods, hone their skills, gain employment, gain experience, build a repertoire, earn profits and start businesses. The subject of training also affects the income levels of beneficiaries, as many of those who study entrepreneurship, quality training and customer service earn above minimum wage. Additionally, social enterprises impact formalization among their beneficiaries. However, once beneficiaries leave, they often return to the informal sector. Therefore, the impact on formalization is only significant while beneficiaries are participating in the social enterprise. Social enterprises also influence the attitudes of beneficiaries, creating a more positive outlook on their contribution to the labor market. Likewise, social enterprises shift perceptions about formal qualifications as beneficiaries feel that they can still secure employment by showing their level of experience or body of work. Lastly, social enterprises have limited impact on fair trade ideals as majority of the social enterprises in Nairobi are not knowledgeable about fair trade, and therefore do not aim towards it. For those that do adopt the fair trade model, it is unclear if they have influenced their beneficiaries to actually believe in these ideals or just simply require them to comply with fair trade regulations. In conclusion, the study determined that social enterprises do have significant impact in the labor market structure, increasing livelihoods, improving educational qualifications, and influencing formalization and attitudinal structures in Nairobi. However, social enterprises must also focus on improving their impact with regards to strengthening livelihoods, especially among their female beneficiaries and creating permanent change in formalization among their beneficiaries even after they leave the enterprise. Likewise, social enterprises should consider the importance of fair trade ideals in their daily practice, and the value of imparting these to their beneficiaries.

Intertemporal Preferences of Nonprofit Organizations This paper studies the intertemporal preferences that govern the spending decision of nonprofit organizations. I estimate the subjective discount rate and the elasticity of intertemporal substitution based on an extension of the consumption Euler model that allows for heterogeneous parameter estimates with regards to donation dependency and size. Biting the Hand That Feeds You: Effects of Embezzlement in Nonprofits This paper studies how newspaper reports on embezzlement affect donations received by nonprofit organizations. Based on a unique data set on wrongdoings by top managers in nonprofits between 1995 and 2002, I provide evidence that the cost of weak governance in nonprofits is very high. What is the Business of Business? This paper develops a theoretical framework for understanding the emergence of new organizational forms, such as socially responsible firms and social enterprises, which embody the private sector’s efforts to resolve problems that typically have been within the purview of government and traditional charities. The framework yields an optimal investment policy, which typically Pareto-dominates many common social investment principles, such as break-even conditions, social screening and SROI. About the author Andreas Nilsson pursued his PhD in the Department of Finance at the Stockholm School of Economics. During this time, he was affiliated with the Swedish House of Finance and SIFR and spent two years as a visiting fellow at Harvard University. He is the founder of Sonanz, an asset management firm focused on social investments.

This study aims to investigate social impact practice in social enterprises in the UK. It explores the drivers and implementation of social impact, how social impact is assessed, the barriers to social impact assessment. This study adopts a qualitative case study approach. Specifically, multiple case studies of social enterprises. The approach to data collection was semi-structured interviews and document analysis. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals with expert knowledge of social impact. This study found that internal mechanisms and external institutions drive social impact. The organisations reviewed their culture and structure to understand the norms and identify capabilities. Stakeholder engagement was paramount to social impact captured. Social impact is captured for accountability, social investment readiness, and to build trust with stakeholders. However, they face barriers such as resource constraints and capturing indirect social impact. The study uncovered that the council for voluntary service legal structure impedes access to social investment. This study contributes to normative isomorphism and the micro-context of institutional theory by presenting an in-depth understanding of internal mechanisms agenda for social impact. It also contributes to the intra-organisational development of social enterprises through the review of organisational culture and structure. This investigation provides an in-depth understanding of the rationale and process to social impact assessment. It provides six stages to social impact assessment based on social enterprises operating in the financial support and service sector. Also, it presents practical implications for senior management, board of directors, funders, and policy-makers due to their influence on social impact. Providing the extensive experiences of the boards in the social sector, they should capitalise on their networks by encouraging cross-sector collaborations. Funders need to take into consideration the organisational size and needs of the region in the funding criteria. Policy-makers could remove barriers on the council for voluntary service and community interest company legal structures to encourage cross-sectoral engagement.

This research examined the influence commercial customers have on the social and financial accountability of social enterprises, specifically considering whether a dominant or diversified customer base impacts on social enterprise accountability. Findings revealed that social enterprise accountability was influenced by social enterprises' main stakeholder(s), not necessarily the dominant customer. Accountability practices focused on fulfilling social enterprises' main stakeholders' accountability demands, and reporting to them rather than reporting on performance to a broader range of stakeholders. This research enhances the understanding of stakeholder impact on social enterprises' accountability, and develops an understanding of accountability theory in a social enterprise context.

This bachelor thesis evaluates how high-engagement investors contribute to the development and growth of for-profit social enterprises by providing both funding and non-financial advisory services focused on organisational capacity-building. Case studies on three social enterprises describe the structure of funding deals, what considerations affected these due to the high social character of the ventures, and inquire into the relationship between social enterprise and their investors to evaluate how the investors provide value for their investees beyond capital. The investor types involved include commercial venture capital funds, angel investors, accelerator programs and venture philanthropy funds; a sort of social impact investment fund which combines the high- engagement mentoring of venture capital funds with lower expectations on financial returns in exchange for higher demands on social impact. The findings indicate that high-engagement investors in general provide a wide range of services to the social enterprises studied, where strategic advisory services and networks introductions are identified as key enablers for development. Aligning philosophies on the combination of business and social impact is also identified as critical for a constructive relationship between investor and investee. The perceived value of venture philanthropy funding diverges between the cases; while filling an empty space in the social enterprise capital market, some findings question their capabilities and investment model. Apart from the initial research questions on how high-engagement investors add value to social enterprises, the study raises further questions on social enterprise funding in general and the issues that obstructs these organisations from introducing innovation and growth to underdeveloped markets.

Il paradigma liberista, riassumibile dalla citazione di Milton Friedman secondo cui l’unica responsabilità sociale di un business è di usare qualsiasi mezzo consentito per incrementare i propri profitti purché si rimanga nelle regole del gioco, ovvero la partecipazione al libero mercato senza ricorrere a inganni o truffe, non è più applicabile alla lettera. L’emergenza della crisi ambientale e la crescente consapevolezza dei consumatori in tema di sostenibilità, anche sociale, mettono pressione alle aziende per adottare policy e strategie che difendano i principi figli di queste preoccupazione tanto quanto perseguano obiettivi di carattere economico e commerciale. Tutto ciò, assieme alla tendenza di molti governi a privatizzare sempre di più la fornitura di servizi sociali essenziali, ha creato grosse opportunità di mercato per le cosiddette imprese sociali, le quali crescono esponenzialmente in quantità e di conseguenza iniziano a fare i conti con meccanismi competitivi tra esse stesse per la conquista di fruitori. Social enterprises are organisations which seek to meet social needs whilst generating their own financial returns. They are becoming increasingly important in South Africa as their approach is not dependent on philanthropy and is therefore largely self-sustainable. Meeting social needs can happen in many ways, but bottom up approaches, which are driven by the poor through providing access to satisifers for fundamental needs are becoming increasingly important. The impact which social enterprises have is not clearly understood and is seldom measured. There is a need to develop tools which are able to portray the social value of these impacts. This study seeks to explore the impact of three social enterprises in Cape Town. The study focuses on the social value of job creation, a pressing need across South Africa, and a social return common to all three enterprises. The study found that a primary concern for staff was job security and earning a decent wage, and without this as a starting point other social returns are minimised. Camaraderie and a sense pride are two important social returns which are also produced. The study also showed that producing social returns must be an intentional activity, and involves a process of negotiation and understanding the needs and values of different stakeholders.

This is a conceptual paper that study through literature review how strategic CSR could create societal value in social enterprise. The study reviews literature on CSR Pyramid, Triple Bottom and show the intricacy of both models in the development of the concept strategic CSR. The paper further goes on to discuss several researches conduct on the concept strategic CSR. The strategic CSR model adopts from Werther and Chandler (2011) is explain thru the CSR filter - ―assessing management’s planned actions by considering the impact of day-day- tactical decisions and longer-term strategies on the organizations constituents”. It also studies the emergence of social enterprise, forms of social enterprise, role of social entrepreneur, social mission, and strategy and stakeholders involvement. The literature review ends with the concept societal which is contextualized in the concept social and economic value.The model use to help explain the framework is the CSR filter. This model is appropriate because it allows the reader to understand how strategic CSR create value in profit business. A number of books and databases in the field of Strategic Management and Social Entrepreneurship were used to acquire literature on the topic. The findings of the paper include innovation, leadership, mission, strategy and organizational structure as well as stakeholder‘s participation and these are ways how strategic CSR could use by Social Enterprise to create social and economic value.Conclusions from the literature are drawn and states that by identifying, incorporating and managing stakeholder‘s relationships does play a key role in how strategic CSR create societal value as well as the balancing of social and economic value should be taken into consideration. The paper ends with recommendations on further research on how can social enterprise measure stakeholders return? And to analyze if the balance that exist between for profit business and not for profit business should be equal.

Cette transformation est outillée par de nouvelles plateformes informatiques intitulées "plateformes de média sociaux d’entreprise" (de l’anglais "Enterprise Social Media platforms – ESM platforms"). Ces plateformes portent la promesse d’améliorer la communication des employés dans leur environnement de travail tout en outillant leurs liens sociaux. Néanmoins, le bénéfice de l’usage de ces plateformes par leurs employés demeure vague et peu mesurable pour les entreprises, dont les dirigeants ont pourtant besoin d’évaluer cet usage et de mesurer ainsi tangiblement le succès de leurs investissements. De plus, le fait d’introduire des plateformes ESM dans les environnements de travail impacte la façon dont les outils existants, tels que la messagerie électronique, sont considérées et utilisés. La question qui se pose est alors de savoir si ces nouvelles plateformes pourraient remplacer l’usage des outils existants. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse adresse la problématique de la place des plateformes ESM dans les entreprises d’aujourd’hui. Elle examine l’usage réel de ces plateformes en offrant une analyse quantitative des réseaux sociaux, établie à partir de l’usage actuel de ces plateformes. En s’appuyant sur un modèle de recherche conçu pour caractériser l’activité, la thèse applique des tests d’hypothèse qui permettent de comparer l’usage prévu de ces plateformes à leur usage réel, et ainsi de mesurer le succès du déploiement de ces plateformes. De plus, cette thèse étudie, à travers une approche déductive et expérimentale, la capacité des plateformes ESM à remplacer l’usage des outils existants dans les environnements de travail. Ces plateformes fonctionnent aujourd’hui plutôt en tandem avec d’autres outils tels que la messagerie électronique. Cette thèse propose ainsi d’améliorer la messagerie par une fonctionnalité de tagging social afin que l’utilisateur puisse bénéficier de son réseau social sous-jacent. Ce service de tagging est ensuite testé et validé via un prototype. Today’s organizations are increasingly promoting a shift of employees’ ways of working towards more agility and flexibility. This shift is empowered by new IT tools commonly known as “Enterprise Social Media” (ESM). Taking mainly the form of integrated platforms, these tools are deployed with the promise of enhancing employees’ communicative activities at the workplace while capitalizing on their social connections. Yet, it remains unclear for companies how their employees benefit from the use of these new tools (i.e., ESM platforms). Managers are unable to evaluate the use of these platforms and thus, tangibly measure the success of their investments. Moreover, introducing ESM platforms to the workplace impact the way the existing tools, such as email, are regarded and used. This leads to the question of whether these new platforms may be substitutes for the use of the existing tools. This thesis tackles the mentioned polemical questions about the place of ESM platforms in today’s enterprises. Carried out jointly with Orange labs, the thesis assesses the role ESM platforms could play in supporting organizations in reaching their objectives and hence sustaining their businesses in an extreme competitive context. It explores the real use of these platforms by offering a quantitative social network analysis and data mining of an established ESM platform currently in use. While relying on a proposed research model that characterizes the activity, the applied hypothesis tests allow determining the correct use of ESM platforms, which in turn indicates the success of their deployments. Moreover, the thesis argues through a reasoning approach that the ESM platforms are not capable of substituting the use of existing workplace tools. Instead, they work in tandem with certain tools such as email. Based on the latter argument, the email tagging service is introduced as an example of how existing workplace tools may be enriched with social features to derive increased benefit for the workforce. The thesis finally validates the service through implementation and testing. To conclude, it proposes and discusses scenarios of future social systems that involve the overall set of workplace tools in enterprises

Aim: The aim of the study is to investigate how social enterprises can use social marketing for image building, and changing behaviors in the society.   Methodology: A qualitative method was used, based on 10 interviews from two social enterprises in Gavle. The data was collected through face-to-face, and email interviews Results and Conclusions: The study explored that social enterprises are focused on relationship marketing and more people oriented. Major social marketing components they are using are word of mouth, networking, online presence, and awareness campaigns. Suggestions for Future Work: A quantitative study can be conducted in order to have in depth analysis from targeted audience point of view. Furthermore, research can also be conducted by asking target audience the importance of relations in social causes, and by including networks such as cooperation with other companies of social enterprises, or donors. Contribution of Thesis: This study contributes on three levels, theoretical, managerial and societal. Theoretically this study adds to the ongoing research in social marketing and social enterprises as it combines the both. Additionally this study also indicates that social marketing is focused on relational aspects of marketing. On the societal level this study shows how social marketing affects people by changing their behaviors. Managerial contribution refers to the fact that social marketing is an important tool, since many social enterprises are on the rise, so social marketing can be used in order to get more fruitful results in the social cause oriented businesses.

Due to increasing emergence of social needs and problems throughout the world, accompanied by reduced government ability to provide the funding necessary to effectively combat these problems, it is expected that social enterprises will grow in number and importance. Because of this growing importance and the lack of research concerning marketing practices in such organizations, the purpose of this thesis is to develop a deeper understanding of both marketing in social enterprises and the context in social enterprises that has the potential to affect the marketing strategies employed in such organizations. Based upon this enhanced understanding, I develop and propose a model of marketing strategy in social enterprises. To develop this enhanced understanding and model, I conducted empirical qualitative research consisting of a comparative study of fifteen cases of social enterprises. Results show that four major dualities represent the critical context of social enterprises that influence the marketing strategies employed. Marketing is viewed as important by these enterprises and the strategies employed are quite well developed in the areas of market research, product quality, branding, and promotion.

“What role did branding play in the social marketing processes of the three Schwab Foundation award winning social enterprises (SEs)?” The research problem, as well as the research questions, revolve around the issue of establishing how branding may be employed as part of the social marketing process in such a way as to increase the competitiveness of those organisations known as social enterprises (SEs). This study investigates three SEs whose Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) have won The Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur (SFSE) of the Year Awards, to determine how branding was used as a communication tool to position their organisations as leaders and differentiators in the development sector. The three SEs that were chosen as case study organisations are: Soul City, Heartbeat and the Johannesburg Housing Company (JHC). The theoretical context focuses firstly on the non-profit sector in South Africa as the context and environment of this study, more specifically, the evolution of non-profit organisations (NPOs) into Social Enterprises (SEs). This is followed by defining communication principles and applications as they appear in both profit-driven and non-profit organisations/social enterprises (NPOs/SEs). This is applied in two different communication contexts: communication within corporate organisations and communication within development organisations. The last theoretical focus is placed on understanding what branding means, a description of the different branding categories, and a view of the evolution of branding to brand building and brand leadership. This is followed by a discussion on the importance of brand identity and equity in the process of brand development, brand management and measurement, including a presentation of the main role players in this brand-building process. Branding is then discussed as it is applied in SEs, outlining what a strong brand could do for the development sector. A combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches are utilised; more specifically a qualitative research approach, supported by a quantitative one, referred to as the “dominant less-dominant model”. This study is based on the grounded theory model supported by a collective case study approach, also referred to as “building theories from case study research”. The study further indicates the theory that was generated by this study, namely “The Social Enterprise (SE) branding layered grounded theory model”. Whereas the 1st layer displays the important role that the NPO/SE sector if fulfilling in modern society; the 2nd layer the specific space and linkages of SEs with the different other society sectors are explained; the 3rd layer positions/similar to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs with the growth path of NPOs towards SEs and their own sustainability on the NPO/SE pyramid model; the 4th layer indicates the fact that the same corporate communication principles applies to the development sector; and the 5th layer stresses the important role that branding plays as the core element of a corporate communication strategy. In summary, the study found that a lack of implementation of corporate communication in NPOs and SEs, more specifically the absence of a corporate identity, image and a strategic brand management process, has a direct impact on the effectiveness of SEs’ communication and limits the achievement of their developmental objectives.

Globalisation has challenged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to internationalise. Consequently, the academic world produced extensive publications on how SMEs approach the internationalisation process and what inhibits their export-based expansion. However, during the last decade, growing attention towards sustainability led to the creation of a new form of entrepreneurial organisation: social enterprises. Social enterprises combine an economic goal with the objective to generate a positive impact on society, focusing on social inclusion or environmental issues. The purpose of this study is to investigate if internationalisation theories on SMEs and on export inhibitors apply to social enterprises. The problem has been investigated by conducting a qualitative content analysis of interviews with C-level managers of social enterprises, with a social or environmental focus. The research contributed to validate the applicability of four internationalisation models to social enterprises. The results show a correlation between business and internationalisation maturity and the influence of the social purpose on social enterprises' internationalisation. Hence, theoretical shortcomings that need to be addressed have been identified. Lastly, the study found that social enterprises are subject to the same export barriers of SMEs. The research has been carried in collaboration with Oscar Ohlström, from Stockholm University (SU). Hence, two master thesis reports have been produced. The first is the following one and, the second has been published under the title of "Internationalizing ForProfit Social Enterprise”. Some sections of the documents have been co-written and, they are present in both reports.
Globaliseringen har utmanat små och medelstora företag (SME) att internationalisera. Följaktligen producerade den akademiska världen omfattande publikationer om hur små och medelstora företag närmar sig internationaliseringsprocessen och vad som hämmar sin exportbaserade expansion. Under det senaste årtiondet har dock ökad uppmärksamhet mot hållbarhet skapat en ny form av entreprenörsorganisation: sociala företag. Sociala företag kombinerar ett ekonomiskt mål med målet att skapa en positiv inverkan på samhället, med inriktning på social integration eller miljöfrågor. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka om internationaliseringsteorier om små och medelstora företag och exporthämmare gäller sociala företag. Problemet har undersökts genom att genomföra en kvalitativ innehållsanalys av intervjuer med chefer på C-nivå för sociala företag med socialt eller miljömässigt fokus. Forskningen bidrog till att validera tillämpligheten av fyra internationaliseringsmodeller till sociala företag. Resultaten visar en korrelation mellan mognad för företag eller internationalisering och socialt inflytande på socialföretagenas internationalisering. Därför har teoretiska brister som behöver åtgärdas identifierats. Slutligen fann studien att sociala företag är föremål för samma exportbarriärer för små och medelstora företag. Forskningen har genomförts i samarbete med Oscar Ohlström, från Stockholms Universitet (SU). Därför har två masterprojekt rapporterats. Den första är den följande och den andra har publicerats under titeln "Internationalisering för socialt företagande". Vissa delar av dokumenten har skrivits samman och de är närvarande i båda rapporterna.

Method: This study has chosen a social enterprise as a single case study. We design the questions and collect the data based on five assessment factors from both the social enterprise and funders’ perspective. We use interview and questionnaires to investigate whether these five assessment factors influence funders’ decision.      Result and Conclusions: In our study, we found that five assessment factors could influence the funders’ decision. Social mission and the qualities of the leader are crucial factors influencing funding decisions. The performance of SE, financing sustainability and communication transparence influence social enterprise to maintain a long-term relationship with funders.  Suggestion for further studies: This investigation based on a single case study in Gavle, and we have collected data from a limited number of responders. Thus, we suggest using multiple case studies and collecting data from more responders. The further study should not be limited to one city. Contribution of the thesis: Our theoretical contribution is providing a model to complete theory. This model includes five factors which affecting funding of social enterprise. In managerial aspect, both current and potential social entrepreneurs can refer to these five assessment factors to improve their competence to attract funders. For the societal implication, this study shows the value and challenge of social enterprise to people and government, which enhance the public recognition of the social enterprise. Aim: There is a growing body of literature that recognizes the importance of Social Enterprises (SE) to improve the welfare of society. Few empirical studies have attempted to investigate what are the challenges SEs face and how they manage them. A number of researchers have reported that SEs often have a negative connotation. The aim of this study is to investigate challenges social enterprises face in Sweden.Method: The study adopted a Qualitative approach. Primary data is gathered by interviewing 10 managers of social enterprise from 5 different SEs in Sweden. The interview was made in three different locations, Gävle, Uppsala and Tierp. De-coding the qualitative research data through content analysis, an interpretive analysis was used classifying the data concerning responses by highlighting important messages.Findings and Conclusion: SEs face diverse challenges: Funding, Public Image, Sales, Network and Cooperation, Governance/Structure, Leadership and Management. One of the more significant finding to emerge from this study is that, the foundations-access to finance is one of the critical challenges on which the fate of each SE depends. Most of the times, societies do not acknowledge the role of social enterprises and the values they bring to the society. From this, SEs cannot attract support of any kind. SEs lack the understanding and significance of marketing. Making people understanding SEs’s role, would provide them with a positive public image and thereafter support.Suggestions for future research: The study has a small sample size and results cannot be generalizable. A natural progression of this work is to analyse: Challenges on SEs with focus on Society, The impact of Society on SEs, Public identity of SEs and importance of Society.Contribution of the thesis: Dependency on fundraising, grants and donations are heavily connected with widespread lack of understanding the impact of SEs on society. SEs managers should apply different marketing tactics to communicate their role in welfare of the community.

Corporate social responsibility programs have become an integral part of large and multi-national companies. This has been in response to two issues: unethical business practices and the growing concern of stakeholders in companies’ services, products, and activities. There has been an absence of corporate social responsibility programs in medium-sized enterprises, particularly in the United States. Many executives in U.S. medium-sized enterprises find it unnecessary to initiate programs of this type. This study focused on the types of corporate social responsibility programs that exist in medium-sized enterprises and the impact executives believe corporate social responsibility programs have on their companies. The purpose of the study was to identify the reasons why medium-sized enterprises lack corporate social responsibility programs. The study used interviews of executives of medium-sized enterprises in Northeast Ohio. The literature review presents the history of corporate social responsibility programs and the theoretical concept, stakeholder theory, which has allowed these type of programs to develop into their present state along with the advantages and benefits of the programs. The study is significant because the lack of a corporate social responsibility program is detrimental to the success of medium-sized companies. Findings suggest companies have realized financial benefits, realized competitive advantages, and created goodwill through the implementation and maintenance of corporate social responsibility programs.

The research focuses on internationalizing social value creation of social enterprises taking the point of view of social enterprises’ adaptation to foreign environments. The paper aims to clarify what kinds of methods social enterprises use in order to adapt to the foreign environments in which they are creating social value. The research has been conducted as a qualitative study combining information from previous researches with new empirical data collected by interviewing four international social enterprises. The interviewed enterprises operate and are originally from different countries. The results of this study show that internationalization of social enterprises is partly different from the internationalization of commercial ones. Due to the differences in mission and operating context, social enterprises often face bigger challenges when internationalizing their mission than commercial enterprises do. Based on this research, it is obvious that social networks and partnerships are crucial for social enterprises when adapting to foreign markets. The partners can help, among other things, in learning the culture, applying for funding and in general recognizing the social value creation possibilities abroad. In addition, changing the legislation and rules in the host country, organizational flexibility and product adaptation play an important role when adapting to creating social value abroad. The earlier researches have quite rarely focused on the internationalization aspects or taken the international perspective on social entrepreneurship. Therefore, adaptation to foreign environments is a new topic in social entrepreneurship research. Hence, the results of this study help to understand the field of international social entrepreneurship better and contribute to theory building on the field. Furthermore, the results can be used as a tool to facilitate internationalization of social impact

Työn tavoitteena on selvittää, millä tavoin yhteiskunnalliset yritykset pyrkivät sopeutumaan ulkomaisille markkinoille laajentaessaan luomansa yhteiskunnallisen vaikutuksen ulottuvaksi kotimaansa ulkopuolelle. Tutkimus on laadullinen ja se on toteutettu analysoimalla aikaisempia tutkimuksia ja yhdistämällä näiden tutkimusten löydöksiä haastatteluilla kerättyyn empiiriseen aineistoon. Tutkimusta varten on haastateltu neljää yritystä neljästä eri maasta. Yritysten toimialueet ovat erilaiset. Yhteiskunnalliset yritykset kansainvälistyvät hieman eri tavalla kuin perinteiset yritykset ja ne myös kohtaavat monet kansainvälistymisen haasteet suurempina tavoitteen ja toimintaympäristön erojen vuoksi. Tutkimus osoittaa erittäin selkeästi, että yhteiskunnallisille yrityksille sopivat yhteistyökumppanit ovat avainasemassa kansainvälistymisen ongelmia ratkottaessa. Yhteistyökumppanit voivat auttaa muun muassa kohdemaan kulttuurin ymmärtämisessä, rahoituksen hakemisessa tai ylipäätään ulkomaisten liiketoimintamahdollisuuksien tunnistamisessa. Tärkeässä roolissa sopeutumisprosessissa ovat myös kohdemaan sääntöjen ja lakien muuttaminen, organisaation joustavuus sekä tuotteen muokkaaminen kulttuurillisesti kohdemarkkinoille sopivaksi. Yhteiskunnallisista yrityksistä on aikaisemmin tehty hyvin vähän tutkimusta kansainvälisestä näkökulmasta tai kansainvälistymiseen liittyen. Tästä syystä ulkomaisille markkinoille sopeutuminen on yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden tutkimuksessa uusi aihe, minkä vuoksi tämän tutkimuksen tulokset auttavat ymmärtämään kansainvälisen yhteiskunnallisen yrittäjyyden ilmiötä paremmin sekä tarjoavat työkalun yhteiskunnallisen vaikutuksen kansainvälistämisen avuksi

Background: - Social enterprises (SEs) address institutional voids by solving social and environmental needs. In South Africa, SEs play a fundamental role as government led initiatives are increasingly strained in their ability to satisfy the social and environmental deficit. Consequently their funding structures are particularly relevant in the present socio-economic milieu of South Africa. Objective:- - This paper thus aimed to provide a detailed understanding of the nuances of funding of social enterprises in South Africa, exploring whether their structural and mission peculiarities warrant a unique funding approach. Methodology - This paper studied social enterprises and funders in South Africa through in-depth interviews provide a comprehensive understanding of the key funding issues from triangulating between funders and social enterprises to arrive at convergence and identify divergences. Results: The results indicate that there is no clarity on the structure and definition of social enterprises in South Africa. This has a direct bearing on the ability of the SE to attract funding as well as funders to provide funding. As a result, SEs pivot their structural from to fit funding requirements and funders sticking to funding approaches for traditional enterprises. Further, as social enterprises attain self-sustainability, scale is restrained by an unwillingness to accommodate traditional funding sources such as equity and debt. Conclusion: The results highlight the unintended funding consequence of the absence of clarity for social enterprises.

The aim of the thesis is to understand drivers or factors that move SMEs towards the adoption of procedures in the frame of Corporate Social Responsibility. Specifically, the dissertation consists of three main parts: the first one explores the theoretical framework behind CSR, with a literature review that lead to a definition of what is CSR. Starting from that, we focus on CSR within SMEs perspective, trying to understand the different scope of actions between these enterprises and the bigger ones. Moreover, we search why could be important to adopt CSR initiatives even in a small-medium context, both from a strategic and a personal standpoint. The second part analyses the drivers of CSR and besides, what are the obstacles that preclude SMEs to follow CSR. Starting from the Green Paper of EU Commission we identify two main categories of factors that influence the choice of pursuing CSR programs: external drivers, related to the context in which the enterprise operates (local communities pressure, partners suppliers, Human rights, legislative standards, fiscal benefits..), and internal drivers, related to personal beliefs (responsible human resource management, health and safety in work environment, awareness of environmental impacts).The third part details how SMEs implement CSR processes. Elaborates and summarizes the different tools that stakeholders can apply to adopt CSR Programs and strategic initiatives: using innovation, through HR Management, using certifications such as SA8000, through Government Policy, through private associations. These premises could lead to an analysis of a real business case that could represent what written across the essay, identifying one or two example of CSR program adopted by a SME.

The thesis examines motivation behind the website social impact reporting practices of 102 social enterprises operating across 29 countries. To identify the motivation which determines the level and quality of disclosure, the thesis has applied stakeholder and collaboration theories to test the impact of board independence and collaborations with other organisations on disclosures. By using multiple regression analyses, the thesis has found that collaborations and board independence influence the quality and extent of disclosure at a significant level.

Tot i que la investigació de les tensions que es deriven de la combinació de les lògiques socials i comercials ha rebut gran atenció a la literatura, no queda clar quins altres tipus de tensions poden sorgir en les empreses socials i com es poden gestionar aquestes tensions. Aquesta tesi doctoral, basada en les teories de les organitzacions híbrides, la coopetició i els models de negoci, pretén posar de manifest els tipus de tensions que les emprenedories socials poden experimentar en diferents nivells d'anàlisi. Combinar la búsqueda de un impacto social positivo con una emprendimiento comercial puede crear tensiones al reunir dos fuerzas opuestas que traen sus propios valores, metas, y estrategias. Aunque la investigación de las tensiones que se derivan de la combinación de las lógicas sociales y comerciales ha recibido gran atención en la literatura, no queda claro qué otros tipos de tensiones pueden surgir en las empresas sociales y cómo se pueden gestionar esas tensiones. Esta tesis doctoral, basada en las teorías de las organizaciones híbridas, la coopetición y los modelos de negocio, pretende poner de manifiesto los tipos de tensiones que los emprendimientos sociales pueden experimentar en diferentes niveles de análisis. Social enterprises, organizations that pursue both a social and commercial mission, have seen a rise both in research and practice over the past couple of decades. Diverse groups of stakeholders are turning toward this type of organization to respond to pressing challenges in society. Combining the pursuit of positive social impact with a business venture can create tensions from bringing together two opposing forces that bring their own values, goals, and strategies. Although the study of tensions that arise from combining social and business logics has received extensive attention in the literature, it remains unclear what other types of tensions can arise in social enterprises and how those tensions can be managed. Drawing on the theoretical lenses of hybrid organizations, coopetition, and business models, this doctoral thesis aims to bring to light types of tensions that social enterprises can experience at different levels of analysis. Through case studies and qualitative methods, it examines the ways social enterprises can interact with each other at the inter-organizational level, how organizations combine different styles when creating new social enterprises at the firm level, and how leaders manage tensions that arise from combining social and commercial logics at the individual level. This thesis aspires to provide implications both for theory and practice.

For-profit social enterprises are facing the dual challenges of fulfilling social purpose on the one hand and surviving business competition on the other. Being a sustainable for-profit social enterprise, the company must balance between economic, social and environmental aspects throughout their business operations. In order to achieve the desired end of sustainability, organization need to keep learning about the social needs and the business environment in order to develop sustainable business processes, and better fulfill their purpose as organizations formed to create social value. The study aims to fill the gaps in sustainability research literature about organizational learning in for-profit social enterprises by exploring how effective learning processes occur at individual, group and organizational level and how to facilitate these learning processes to improve sustainability. The study develops an analytical framework by combining the 4I framework for organizational learning process (Crossan et al., 1999) and an AKO (activities, knowledge source, outcomes) framework for understanding learning activities, knowledge sources and learning outcomes. Four for-profit social enterprises in both Denmark and Sweden are chosen as cases. Based on findings, three organizational learning mechanisms are identified on selected cases. Practical implications and insights are also generated for for-profit social enterprises to facilitate organizational learning for sustainability.

Social entrepreneurship, defined as entrepreneurial activities with a clear mission to create social value, is gaining increased influence and importance in the economy. Through combining a for-profit mindset with social objectives, social enterprises provide groundbreaking solutions to societal needs. The global presence and impact of social enterprises raise the importance of internationalization of this specific kind of enterprise. This is an area of inquiry that has gained limited attention in academia and empirical studies have been few. The purpose of the study is to investigate motives for internationalization of social enterprises and how these enterprises establish in foreign markets. The study consists of an empirical investigation based on a survey sample of 65 respondents and one background interview. The result shows that the main motive for internationalization of social enterprises is to alleviate social problems. Social enterprises have a distinct international character, show patterns of early and rapid internationalization and can be characterized as international new ventures with a distinct social mission. Networks affect motives as well as choice of entry mode of social enterprises. The most common mode of entry of social enterprises is to establish alliances or partnerships with foreign actors and the main target market is less developed economies.

Having inherited a huge housing shortage from the previous apartheid regime, the government of the newly liberated Republic of South Africa embarked on an ambitious programme to resolve the problem, as was required of it by its constitution. The government’s approach was (and is) to offer a once-off subsidy, which has become increasingly generous over the years, to qualifying households. Twenty years later, some three million dwelling units have been built, but there remains a shortfall of some two million houses, which is growing annually. Having regard to the size of the problem and the fact that it is growing despite Herculean efforts on the part of the government, it is clear that intervention by the private sector and civil society is required. The private sector, however, is constrained by the fact that profitability in the affordable housing market is small. In the absence of reasonable profit margins, and in the context of the fact that there is a dire need for adequate shelter, the question arises why corporations who have a long history of donating to social causes, do not allocate more of their corporate social investment budgets to organisations involved with the problem? The answer is that the need is for a private good that is already receiving significant government support, with the result that corporate social investment is crowded out. In addition, corporations are increasingly recognising the need to align their social investment strategies with their business strategies. This is not happening in the housing context partly because corporations are struggling to conceptualise the relationship between the two strategies, and partly because there is no framework within which to do so. Corporate social investment strategies are meaningful and justifiable when they open new markets and opportunities for the company. Successful human settlements exist where economic and social opportunities are integrated seamlessly. Should the government’s housing policy use the principle of integration as a point of departure, it could encourage corporations to channel moneys to social causes. The ideal vehicles for the corporations to employ in such endeavours are social enterprises, because these are non-profit organisations that are managed in a business-like manner. They bring focus to the investment and assurances that moneys are spent well, and their entrepreneurial approach makes them self-sustaining over time.

Aim: The aim of this study is to investigate the factors that motivate people to work for social enterprises and how social enterprise can attract qualified employees.Method: Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used. The qualitative data were collected by interviews with 7 participants from 4 social enterprises in Gävleborg of Sweden. We gathered the quantitative data via questionnaires which were collected from 38 MBA students in University of Gävle.Result and Conclusions: By comparison between the expectation of MBA students and reality of the social enterprises, we found promotion opportunities and work environment are the factors which restrict social enterprises to attract employees and motivate people.Suggestion for further studies: Based on the exiting researches and our experiences, most studies focus on the financial problems and entrepreneur problems of the social enterprises. We suggest that further research could investigate the other aspects of social enterprises such as management problems or network of social enterprise.Contribution of the thesis: In this study, the most important factor to motivate students work for social enterprises are pointed out as work environment and we also give suggestions to social enterprises to improve their attractiveness, such as improving the promotion chance for employees.

However, the environmental and social problems faced by countries are still endless, so the formation of a new type of business, scholars called the social enterprise and being the global wave, forming a new citizen consciousness and spontaneity movement. Therefore, this study attempts to explore whether the multi-faceted partnership of social enterprises and large enterprises can work together to solve more social problems and lead to social innovation, as well as enhance social influence and maximize the greatest contribution to society benefit. Second, to discuss both establish a partnership. The research adopted multiple case studies to select five domestic social enterprises and four large enterprises, using semi-structured interviews, secondary data and direct observation as the data sources. The data were analyzed by theme analysis. The point of view through this method to find context. Finally, through the theme inference, the two sides of the views of the integration and the establishment of model structure, The result highlight for practice that large enterprises fulfilled corporate social responsibility and social enterprises sought out suitable partners for cooperation as a reference.

Social enterprises, organizations that combine elements of business and charity, use the market to solve a social or environmental problem. The purpose of this dissertation is to fill the gap in the literature regarding the link of the field of internationalisation strategies and the field of social enterprises. It aims to identify how these organisations conduct the internationalisation decision and market selection. To answer, how social enterprises internationalise, a comparative case study with two social enterprises located in Portugal was conducted. Findings show that both companies internationalised for very different reasons, yet in both cases being “social” influenced the internationalisation decisions. The literature on internationalisation, especially the network model, can explain some of the results, others not.
Empresas sociais, organizações que combinam elementos de negócios e caridade, utilizam o mercado para resolver problemas sociais ou ambientais. O propósito desta dissertação é preencher a lacuna na literatura respeitante à relação entre a área de estratégias de internacionalização e a área de empresas sociais. Visa identificar como essas organizações comandam as decisões de internacionalização e a seleção do mercado. Para responder a como as empresas sociais se internacionalizam foi feito um estudo de caso comparativo, entre duas empresas sociais localizadas em Portugal. Os resultados demonstram que ambas as empresas se internacionalizaram por razões diferentes, ainda assim em ambos os casos o facto de serem de cariz social influência a decisão de internacionalização. A literatura sobre internacionalização, especialmente o network model, pode explicar parte dos resultados, mas não todos.

With the development of globalization trend, the popularization of information network, the maturity of information communication technology and related technologies, the rapid changes of economic and social environment. Effectively adopt information technology is the sustainable development of modern enterprises and enhance the competitiveness of an integral part. Among them, many enterprises in order to create and sustainable competitive advantage, have also used information technology or adopt information system for enterprise recycling and management. In recent years, enterprises used by the (Information System, IS) is gradually regarded as one of the competitiveness indicators. For example: ERP, CRM, SCM, etc. These are known as (Enterprise Information System, EIS) or (Enterprise System, ES) has become a modern enterprise essential and important management tools. However, at the time when EIS is widely adopted by a profit-making organization that generally seeks to maximize shareholder profitability.In recent years, emerging enterprises in the development of EIS demand or use of the situation is relatively less mentioned.Therefore, this study attempts to general business in the EIS experience.And then further explore the social enterprise enterprise information system needs, and may affect the social enterprises to use enterprise information system related factors. This study was first reviewed and summarized. Then through the citation analysis out of research gap, and then for the research gap for more in-depth discussion. This reasearch combined with the technology - organization - environmental framework and Task-Technology Fit theory to develop a conceptual architecture. Follow the various facets to compile the relevant impact of the factors used, and for social enterprises related practitioners interviews, a total of six respondents. This paper uses the content analysis method and the regularization concept to analyze the related factors which influence the relevant factors of the enterprise enterprise using the enterprise information system to graphically present the whole idea and the factor of the topic, and make the research inference. The results show that the equivocality, observability, compatibility, technology competence, technology integration, relationship with user, quality, ease to use/training, system reliability, firm size, firm scope, financial commitment, managerial obstacles, perceived barriers, top management support, organizational innovativeness and competitive pressure are the main factor affecting the use of EIS. The study found that social enterprises have actually used the enterprise information system case, but the adoption is not universal, also found that most social enterprises in the application of ICT is quite common. In the academic research can provide the future direction; in practice, it will help the relevant industry in the enterprise information system reference and future development direction.

The study aims to discuss the development of domestic publishing industry and the operating method of popularizing reading in communities managed by social enterprises to find out the probable method of improving the development situation of publishing industry and people’s reading atmosphere. The study takes “An Integrated Public Affairs Management Framework” by Mr. Wang as the core theory and interprets and analyzes the statistic data of national libraries term by term to find out the overall situation of publishing industry. As employee creativity is an important source of organizational innovation and competitive advantage. nowadays, organizations are increasingly seeking to foster individual creativity. In the existing literature, employee creativity is beneficial for organizations to achieve organizational innovation. However, in previous studies focused on exploring the key factors of employee creativity, and provided the managing strategy for encouraging employee creativity only for commercial companies. The practice of facilitate employee creativity in different industries, or different organizational contexts remains unexplored. Social enterprises by innovative business means, practice the mission of solves social problems and dedicates to environmental sustainability, employee creativity may be an important source of organizational innovation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore how to facilitate employee creativity in social enterprises. This research adopted qualitative research method (grounded theory), depth interviews with four social enterprises in Taiwan, to create the process model of facilitating employee creativity for social enterprise. The results of the study indicate that most of the employees who join social enterprises were hoping to be able to create more social values. Therefore, in order to promote employee creativity, social enterprises should reinforce the connection between employees and social mission. Additionally, allowing employees to participate in determining operating strategy and mandating employees to have adequate flexibility.

In recent years, Social Network Marketing has become a trendsetter. The awareness of Taiwan social enterprises to catch up with this trends to enhance company and brand awareness is worthwhile for further exploring. This study scope is about the most commonly used Facebook, both currently widely used by Taiwanese people. And, the methods of literature exploration, deliberate sampling, semi-structured interviews with deep interviews, and comparative research methods are applied to explore the status of social marketing of each social enterprise. This study found that 173 Taiwan social enterprises are registered with the Department of Commerce of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In this study, most of the above social enterprsies lack of the ability to conduct socail network marketing. Only 49.1% of social enterprises set up social networking websites; and only 23.1% have actively managed their products and concepts weakly. If using both social network platforms properly, Facebook can enhance brand awareness and use LINE @ can directly coomuicate to the customer, social enterprises can reduce marketing costs and achieve the goal of sustainable development.

In this paper, different types of social enterprises in Europe and the United States are placed in a unified framework of social enterprise spectrum, to look for the organizational forms of different types of social enterprises in the spectrum of them. Representative social enterprises with different organizational forms are selected from Europe and the United States for analysis of individual cases with four stakeholders including beneficiaries, capital, workforces, suppliers as the breakthrough point, integrating the concept of green economy and sustainable development. Finally, the most sustainable organizational form with referable significance of social enterprises for the improvement reality was reached, along with the sustainability spectrum of social enterprises concluded.

Recently, “ Social enterprise” became a buzzword internationally, and many countries have legislate for enterprises or organizations with profit-oriented and social-orientation simultaneously, Taiwan is no exception. There were more than one draft legislation about social enterprise in Taiwan, but none of them has been passed. It shows that legislation about social enterprise is controversial. This thesis is about to make legislative suggestions about social enterprise by comparative legislation study and analysis of the legal issues about social enterprises in Taiwan. First, there is no unified definition of social enterprise, and the definition of social enterprise varies with different areas, culture, countries and so on. Therefore, how to promote social enterprise by legislation or policy is more important than defining social enterprise. Secondly, this thesis study the legislations of social enterprise internationally, and focus on the experience in USA and UK. The legislation model about social enterprise is quite different from USA to UK. In USA, the most popular legislation is “ benefit corporation,” which is initiated by B-Lab and features liberalism and capitalism, which means benefit corporation legislation motivated by market machanism. By contrast, the CIC act in UK relies on government intervention to keep the CIC in pursuing social purposes. The legislative experience in USA and UK could be the the Legislative reference for Taiwan. This thesis then find that there is no unified definition of social enterprise in Taiwan, and the legal forms which social enterprises in Taiwan choose vary. However, this thesis find that most of social enterprises in Taiwan prefer to register as corporation, so it is critical to amend the Company Act to meet requirements of social enterprises in Taiwan. Finally, the thesis suggests that the legislators in Taiwan can amend the Company Act by adopting the benefit corporation legislation model because it takes little legislative cost and is convenient to use for social enterprises in Taiwan. In addition, we should also adopt the government intervention in the legislation to make sure social enterprise adopting benefit corporation form would follow the legal requirements such as benefit report disclosure. Last but not least, legal amendment is not the most important factor to make social enterprises flourishing. The key to make social enterprises in Taiwan flourishing is that entrepreneurs, government, citizens and all the consumers collaborate together with aligned value of making the society better.

This problem with the development of society, more and more. And the government needs to solve the problem more and more, but the government budget is stretched, the government is often powerless, even because the bureaucratic layers of control, from planning to execution often waste, the actual implementation may have been outdated. Social enterprises in recent years become a social enterprise responsibility or public welfare outside the third choice, is considered a feasible solution to solve social problems. This study uses Taiwan's largest social enterprise fan group - social network of the paste as the object of analysis, to Rfacebook from the 2014 social enterprise first year to 2017 May fans of the posters, the establishment of the database, for the discussion of classification Do statistical information to the text of the cloud to discuss the level of discussion, and then that the current social enterprises focus on what areas of the problem. This study shows that the development trend of social enterprises in Taiwan includes: agriculture-related social enterprises become mainstream, young generation into the social enterprise entrepreneurship, show the spirit of small and medium enterprises. The “social enterprise” is a new type of organization that has been used to solve social problems in recent years. It has received great attention both in the academic field and in practice. It takes social welfare as the starting point and uses business models to achieve profitability and solve social problems. Nowadays, more and more people are joining social enterprises in Taiwan. The government invests funds to promote related policies and encourage the development of social enterprises. In practice, the situation of unstable financial resources leads to poor company management and the failure of the effective achievement of the social mission. However, companies can maintain sustainable development through innovative products and services. The key is to establish a business model. This study uses the “case study” method to design an interview outline based on the “business model canvas” proposed in Osterwalder and Pigneur’s book Business Model Generation (2010). This study explores the operation of the business model in a local social enterprise in Taiwan called “Green Hope Spring” and describes the business model canvas of the case by using the “deep interview” method to analyze and discuss the current business situations and problems of the case. This research shows that a “circular economy” is the core of the business model. The case can achieve its social mission of reforestation by maintaining current operations. In order to improve competitiveness, the case actively seeks alliances and cooperation with other companies, extended goods and services, and continuous innovation to create greater income and social influence. The results and recommendations of this study are expected to help entrepreneurs who are willing to develop social enterprises understand the key factors in designing a suitable, innovative and competitive business model to respond to a rapidly changing environment.
