Social discounting aims to compare the respective future consequences of differing courses of action for human well-being, and so to help decide on policies for matters as varied as climate change, transport and criminal justice. Social discounting is widely used, though some decisions are too trivial, or too urgent, for it to be justified. Even so, its pervasive use is at variance with scepticism about its moral foundations, and about whether the comparisons that it claims to make can be made at all. Debate has, however, concentrated on how, rather than on whether, social discounting should be done and the conditions upon which it must be based seem never to have been set out systematically. This thesis aims to fill that gap, by explaining the moral and practical conditions that must be met for social discounting to be justified. The conditions are demanding. It behoves policy makers to satisfy themselves more carefully than is now done that the conditions are met in respect of the decisions where use of social discounting is proposed, and to consider alternatives where one or more conditions is not met. The thesis takes for granted that human well-being counts morally. But social discounting requires that well-being is capable of being described through an objective list of desiderata and that some aspect of well-being is measurable, at least on a cardinal scale and inter-personally, implying commensurabilities amongst some of the things comprising or contributing to well-being. Some moral theories incorporate priorities, such as property rights or the interests of poor people. Priorities range from easy to meet to very difficult. Priorities of the latter type are inconsistent with social discounting, and are the basis for theories as varied as those of Nozick and Nussbaum. This thesis suggests that the theories consistent with social discounting may collectively be called ‘moderate welfarism’. Moderate welfarism allows room for priorities and other moral considerations provided only that the monetisable aspect of social well-being is morally important. Moderate welfarism is necessary but not sufficient for social discounting to be justifiable. Practical difficulties may make it incapable of implementation. One such difficulty is the well-known epistemic problem, but the thesis sets out nine such difficulties, each implying a condition that must be met if social discounting is to be capable of practical use. The thesis concludes that the moral and practical conditions that must be met for social discounting to be justified are demanding and, more speculatively, that some of the conditions are not widely understood leading to inappropriate use of the technique by governments.

Social support has been demonstrated to reduce cardiovascular disease morbidity and mortality; however, the mechanisms by which social support reduces disease progression are still unclear. Oxytocin (OT) is a neuropeptide commonly associated with positive social interactions. This series of studies investigated the ability of oxytocin to attenuate atherosclerosis and its putative mediators, pro-inflammatory cytokines. Oxytocin receptors were identified by Western Blot on rat adipose tissue and rat adipocytes. OT receptor mRNA was identified in human adipocyte cDNA. In primary culture of rat abdominal adipocytes, oxytocin (10 pM) decreased LPS-induced IL-6 release by 24.9% after a six hour incubation. Adipose tissue, surgically dissected from ApoE-/- mice chronically infused with OT, secreted less IL-6 than mice infused with a vehicle control. In sum, the presence of OT receptors was demonstrated on adipocytes, OT was shown to reduce IL-6 release in vitro, and chronic OT infusion decreased IL-6 release in adipose explants immediately after sacrifice. Potential mechanisms by which adipose tissue's role in the sympathetic nervous system response may affect inflammation, metabolism, and disease are discussed.

Este estudo envolve egressos que concluíram seu curso de graduação no ano de 1997, com idade de até 32 anos, no momento em que participaram da pesquisa. A amostra constituí-se de egressos de cinco cursos - Administração de Empresas, Direito, História, Pedagogia e Odontologia - de três instituições de Santa Catarina, duas públicas e uma privada. Busca-se compreender os elementos que caracterizam os processos de inserção no mercado de trabalho por parte desses jovens, as mediações que se estabelecem entre as diferentes instituições de ensino, o segmento social ao qual pertence o jovem e as diferentes formas de ingresso nesse mercado. A análise dos dados demonstra que mais de 90% dos egressos estavam empregados no momento da pesquisa, no entanto, a situação profissional em que se encontram é bastante diversificada, especialmente em termos salariais. A "qualidade" do emprego conquistado, representada pela faixa salarial declarada pelo egresso, depende da carreira e das condições socioeconômicas. Constatou-se que, quanto maior é a renda e nível de escolaridade dos pais, maior é o salário dos filhos. As formas como os jovens acessam seus empregos são também indicadoras de seu pertencimento social. Duas vias destacam-se, a saber: intermédio da família e intermédio dos amigos. Os que recebem os piores salários tendem a conseguir seus empregos pela via familiar, enquanto que aqueles que apresentam os melhores salários se utilizam das relações de amizade, embora não descartem o meio familiar. Insegurança e falta de expectativas em relação ao trabalho são sentimentos compartilhados entre os egressos, independentemente de sua condição socioeconômica e a carreira seguida.

Previous issue date: 2005<br>Em finais da década de 1920, uma reviravolta no campo de produção de conhecimentos históricos na França contribuiu para que outras fontes, problemas e temas de pesquisa emergissem. Neste sentido, o texto literário alcunhado como “romance histórico” passou a ser uma fonte de pesquisa a mais à disposição dos historiadores, pelo fato de estar presente neste tipo de narrativa, a leitura ou leituras dos literatos sobre dada conjuntura histórica. Levando-se em consideração as questões postas, o trabalho ora apresentado visa a contribuir para essa discussão, que tem merecido a atenção de pesquisadores de diversos lugares e continentes, qual seja, fazer história social com literatura, buscando-se neste tipo de fonte, vestígios, pistas, enfim, outras possibilidades de registros que possam ter passado ao largo da percepção dos historiadores, que, durante muito tempo, depositaram credibilidade nos chamados “documentos oficiais”, considerando-os, única via capaz de grafar a história de um povo, não conseguindo e nem visando a dizer sobre as culturas diferentes existentes nas sociedades diversas, sobre as questões identitárias, as relações de gênero, assim como sobre outras falas. Ao longo deste trabalho, tomaremos como referência para discutir aspectos culturais da história dos costumes de Salvador, as obras Suor (1934) e Capitães da Areia (1937) do escritor baiano Jorge Amado, nas quais à medida que vai tecendo enredos sobre o modus vivendi na e da cidade, acaba por apresentar ao leitor/pesquisador possíveis leituras sobre a história do lugar, captadas, inclusive, nos relacionamentos que o autor travava no seu viver citadino. Assim, a condição social das lavadeiras ditas por Amado não destoam dos registros encontrados ao longo da pesquisa nos Jornais Diário de Notícias e A Tarde entre os anos de 1930 e 1939 e, são estes registros que estaremos apresentando e discutindo a seguir.<br>Salvador

Le Travail social, axé sur les rapports humains, implique l'élaboration d'une oeuvre utile et intellectuelle, regroupe une kyrielle de professions exerçant leurs activités dans des organismes privés et publics. Aborder en droit social les conditions de travail dans ce secteur et s'interroger sur l'adaptation des principes dudit droit aux acteurs sociaux est nécessaire. En effet, les spécificités du travail social, les particularités des usagers, l'application dérogatoire du droit du travail et les conditions dans lesquelles exercent certains acteurs sociaux. . . Appellent à des réflexions. Si le régime d'équivalence reste discutable, la législation sur les responsabilités serait une application adéquate, même si la protection juridique des acteurs sociaux reste hypothétique. C'est ainsi que cette étude interroge l'applicabilité du droit social à un secteur spécifique, dont certains de ses aspects relèveraient du droit commun, d'une législation spécifique mais non nécessairement dérogatoire<br>The social labor is an activity based on humans relations. This means that a useful and intellectual organization has to be set up. This sector includes many professions working in private associations and in public offices. Concerning the social law, it seems to be necessary to approach the question of the working conditions and to wonder about a possible adaptation of this law to the social workers. Indeed, the special features of the social work, the particularities of users, the derogatory applications of the working law and also the manner in which some social workers practise. . . Need to be considered. If the application of the equivalence hours is deeply questionable, the legislation upon the responsibilities seems to be of an appropriate application, in spite of the fact that legal protection of the social workers remains hypothetical. So this study aims to question the opportunity of applying the general principles of the social law in this sector but no necessary derogatory

A partir de la thématique de la condition féminine, nous proposons une étude contextuelle et textuelle de Patologia Social. Nous étudions d’abord la situation de la femme portugaise de 1867 à 1910, c’est-à-dire le temps fictif de Patologia Social, en relation avec la République et le réalisme-naturalisme. Nous analysons ensuite les personnages féminins sous les angles narratologiques et sociaux. Du côté narratologique, nous mettons à nu la constitution textuelle de ces mêmes personnages, c’est-à-dire leur place dans l’histoire, leurs portraits, leurs voix, leur espace physique. Du côté social, les personnages sont pris comme des unités de signification mettant en évidence des états et des groupes, bref la société d’alors. De ces deux angles nous tirons deux conclusions : la première établit une relation indéfectible entre les portraits des personnages féminins et le dénouement de l’intrigue, et la seconde se focalise sur la sexualité dégradante de ces mêmes personnages<br>From the set of themes of the female condition, we propose a contextual and textual study of Patologia Social. We study initially the situation of the Portuguese woman between 1867 to 1910, that means the fictitious time of Patologia Social, in relation to the Republic and the realism-naturalism. We analyze then the female characters under the narratologic angles and social. On the narratologic side, we expose the textual constitution of these same characters, meaning their place in history, their portraits, their voices, their physical space. From the social side, the characters are taken as units of significance highlighting states and groups, so their all society. From these two angles we draw two conclusions: the first establishes an indefectible relation between the portraits of the female characters and their outcome, and the second is focused on the degrading sexuality of these same characters

Cette réflexion est une étude des imaginaires sociaux des sociétés modernes. En repartant de l’idéal égalitaire qui a engendré les sociétés d’Europe et d’Amérique du Nord, nous analysons le cas de l’Amérique latine et en particulier du Chili. Nous proposons une définition du concept de Tocqueville, « l’égalité des conditions », théorisée comme l’imaginaire social structurant des sociétés du nord. Par effet de miroir, nous démontrons que le principe qui a structuré les sociétés d’Amérique latine est, à l’inverse, un imaginaire d’« inégalité des conditions ». Cet imaginaire puise ses racines dans l’inégalité de considération entre les hommes, générant et reproduisant des pratiques sociales et des institutions inégales, notamment à partir d’un facteur racial originel. En analysant ces imaginaires sociaux de façon empirique, nous reconstituons ces deux imaginaires au sein de la société chilienne contemporaine. La recherche a mis en évidence que la matérialisation de l’imaginaire inégalitaire au sein du social se traduit principalement par le classisme et le mythe des élites, une idée partagée par toutes les classes sociales sur la supériorité des élites. Cependant, cet imaginaire central est aujourd’hui remis question par l’avènement d’un imaginaire périphérique, l’imaginaire égalitaire-individualiste, qui remet en question les structures hiérarchiques et verticales au niveau des interactions microsociales, des relations entre groupes sociaux ainsi que les institutions centrales<br>This study is a reflection on the social imaginaries which characterize modern societies. Beginning with the principal ideals which generated European and North American societies, we will then analyze the Latin American case, particularly in respect to Chile. We will explore the concept of De Tocqueville’s “equality of condition” proposed as the main and structuring social imaginary of Northern Hemisphere societies. Reflecting on this concept, we show that Latin America’s structuring principle is, on the contrary, an imaginary of “inequality of conditions.” This imaginary is derived from a fundamental inequality of consideration among men and women, generating and reproducing unequal social practices and institutions, all of which originated mainly due to racial factors. By analyzing these social imaginaries empirically, we can reconstitute these two imaginaries in contemporary Chilean society. This study shows that the imaginary of inequality has produced two fundamental elements: classism and the “myth of the elite”, an idea shared by all social classes concerning the elite’s superiority. Currently however, this central imaginary is contested by the emergence of another peripheral imaginary, the egalitarian-individualist, which questions the hierarchical and vertical structures in microsocial interactions, social relations and central institutions

Previous issue date: 2017-10-20<br>Esta dissertação teve como objetivo analisar a condição da mulher na previdência social desde a instituição da Seguridade Social na Constituição Federal de 1988. A pesquisa se justifica pela necessidade de estudos referentes à condição da mulher na previdência social, especialmente em contexto de crise estrutural do capital que associada ao projeto político neoliberal aprofundam as desigualdades sociais já existentes, nesse caso,especialmente, as desigualdades existentes entre os sexos em decorrência dos sistemas de exploração-dominação racistas, patriarcais e capitalistas que oprimem as mulheres e refletem no acesso delas à previdência social. Para tanto, foi realizada revisão bibliográfica sobre a divisão sexual do trabalho associada a situação das mulheres no mundo do trabalho e previdência social, recuperando um pouco do histórico das lutas do movimento de mulheres, suas conquistas e resistências. Além disso, foi feita pesquisa sobre dados referentes a quantidade de mulheres nas diversas categorias de segurados da previdência social bem como sua expressividade nos benefícios acessíveis tanto a segurados quanto dependentes da mesma política utilizando dados sobre os benefícios ativos disponibilizados pelos Anuários Estatísticos da Previdência Social (AEPS) de 2011 a 2015. Percebeu-se que as mulheres são maioria nas categorias de segurados que não dependem do trabalho assalariado formal como forma de contribuição previdenciária, o que mostra a divisão sexual do trabalho presente no mundo do trabalho levando a inferir que no âmbito da previdência social elas são menos protegidas do que os homens e, quanto aos benefícios previdenciários devidos tanto a segurados quanto dependentes, elas correspondem a maioria presente naqueles benefícios destinados dependentes de segurados, portanto, afirma-se com isso a histórica dependência econômica da mulher em relação ao homem no acesso de direitos previdenciários.

Os registros medievais acerca das mulheres comumente reforçam uma idéia negativa do gênero feminino, delimitando seu espaço de ação ao privado e indicando o casamento como sua função primordial. Acreditamos, porém, que sem um cotejamento com os instrumentos de ação formais disponibilizados pelas mulheres, a aceitação tácita dos postulados oriundos da ética cristã para o conhecimento da condição social feminina leva-nos a uma compreensão não mais que parcial dos papéis desempenhados no conjunto social. Desta feita, para conhecermos a condição social das mulheres de 16 vilas e cidades da região da Estremadura portuguesa, no século XV, recorremos a documentos oficiais para descobrir os direitos postos a sua disposição pela legislação portuguesa. A análise da documentação leva-nos a inferir que a mulher, detentora de uma identidade jurídica identificada na legislação do reino, encontrava nos dispositivos legais enunciados pelo poder real os meios necessários para garantir a manutenção de seu direito à propriedade, bem como a certa liberdade para dispor de seus bens.<br>The medieval records about women usually strengthen the negative concept of the gender, restraining then to the domestic space and indicating the marriage as their main function. We believe, however, that the tacit acceptance of the postulates from the Christian ethic for the comprehension of women\'s social condition without analyzing the instruments they had would lead us to an understanding no more than partial of the rolls they played. Therefore, in our research we seek women in the XV century in 16 villages and towns from the Portuguese Estremadura, to find women in the public spaces we turned to official manuscript documents from Portuguese archives, to find their rights, to the royal legislation. The analysis of the documentation indicates that the women with a juridical identity could find in the legal devices the means to assure the maintenance of their right to properties as well as a certain freedom to administrate their possessions.

O objetivo principal desta pesquisa é investigar o "ponto de vista" das crianças em relação ao tempo e ao espaço do brincar no interior da escola. Mediante um estudo de caso etnográfico, buscamos compreender as possibilidades de a escola se tornar um lugar privilegiado da infância, nos dias de hoje. Para tanto, foram entrevistadas 27 crianças matriculadas de 1ª a 4ª séries do Ensino Fundamental, filhos e filhas da classe trabalhadora. Por meio de tais depoimentos as crianças falaram de si mesmas, bem como de aspectos importantes sobre o tempo e o espaço do brincar no interior da escola pública. Revelaram o quanto a condição social da criança na escola, especialmente no que se refere ao direito de brincar, encontra-se precária, devido às rígidas regras da escola e à introjeção de certos valores dos adultos, tais como ver a brincadeira como bagunça ou perda de tempo. Finalmente, conhecer a escola e "ouvir" a criança sobre sua condição social, sua infância e sobre o brincar, resultou em instigantes descobertas e reflexões que podem contribuir com a construção do campo de pesquisa sobre educação e infância no Brasil.

This instigated the further alienation of the masses and allowed government officials to promote its own agenda of moral reform. In an effort to expose the elitist intentions of this state run temperance movement, this thesis analyzes four images from Camille Pissarro's unpublished album, Turpitudes Sociales of 1889, which represent similar imagery but with an opposite message. I will analyze these images from Pissarro's unpublished work in order to shed light on his incorporation of class relations and depiction of the bourgeoisie's negative impact on the French working classes.

Vivemos, como nunca antes havíamos experimentado, um período de transformações que levaram à configuração contemporânea do convívio entre homens e mulheres no espaço público. Mas isso não significa a eliminação de diferenças nas inserções e nas formas de inserções no mundo público, para os homens e para as mulheres, e sim uma transformação das relações entre todos, tanto no mundo público quanto no mundo privado. Em um panorama social, político e econômico contemporâneo, de descartabilidade do homem, de esvaziamento do espaço público, da criação e manipulação de imagens, foco das reflexões de Hannah Arendt (2000, 1981,1987) em sua crítica à democracia representativa, inscreve-se também a violência simbólica preconizada por Pierre Bourdieu (2003). Nestas reflexões sobre o ser humano e o mundo contemporâneo, coloca-se a questão de como se inserem as incontáveis experiências de mulheres comuns, seu pensamento, práticas e escolhas. As mulheres, sujeitos desta pesquisa, são flagradas em uma particular circunstância: estão expostas a vicissitudes quanto às exigências de sua história pessoal e a um interstício, situado entre influências historicamente mais conservadoras e mais progressistas. Portanto, na intersecção entre: as construções historicamente produzidas que pautam uma conduta feminina, transformações mais contemporâneas que afetam estas condições e, especialmente, as maneiras com que cada mulher investe-se de sua história pessoal, a proposição deste estudo é pensarmos as possibilidades de subversão de uma feminilidade hegemônica e, as potencialidades de se transformar em um sujeito político. Nos discursos trazidos é possível entrever maneiras com que cada mulher vai construindo um percurso e negociando, escolhendo e moldando dentre as enunciações sócio-culturais, uma marca pessoal, ou uma singularidade para o enfrentamento de questões cotidianas e de vida, encaminhamentos objetivos e subjetivos que se constituem potencialidades de transformação na lógica de poder que destroça os seres humanos quando não se tolera as distinções, singularidades e diferenças e quando o agir é substituído por um mero comportar. A compreensão destas alternativas potencialmente capazes de subverter condicionantes que submetem seres humanos a outros seres humanos, é alicerçada no pensamento de Hannah Arendt, sobre liberdade, pluralidade, natalidade, pensamento, milagre e ação.<br>We are experiencing a period of transformation, never experienced before, which is leading us to the contemporary way men and women relate in the public sphere. This does not mean that the differences in the insertions and in the form of insertions have been eliminated to men and women in the public world. It means however, that relationships among them are changing, both in the public and in the private world. In a social, political and economical contemporary scene, the disposability of men, the emptiness of the public space, the creation and manipulation of images, are the focus of Hannah Arendts reflections (2000, 1991, 1981) in her critique of the representative democracy. The symbolic violence of Pierre Bourdieu (2003) is also included. Following these reflections of the human being and the contemporary world, there is a question of how the numerous experiences of the common women, their thoughts, practices and choices are embedded. The women participating in this research are in a special circumstance: they are exposed to vicissitudes regarding their own personal stories, and positioned in the interstice of both conservative and progressive historical influences. Hence, in the intersections between the historical constructions underlying the feminine conduct, contemporary transformations affecting these conditions, and specially, the way that each woman embraces her personal story, this study examines the possibilities of subverting a homogeneous femininity, and the potentialities of becoming a political being. In their interviews one can see the ways in which each woman builds her own personal route and negotiates, socio-cultural propositions, choosing and modeling her own singularity to confront everyday life questions. These objective and subjective endeavors would potentially transform the logic of power which destroys human beings whenever differences and singularities are not tolerated, as well as when acting is replaced by a common behavior. The understanding of these alternatives which can potentially subvert the conditionals that human beings submit to other human beings, is based on Hannah Arendt ideas of freedom, plurality, birth, thinking, miracle and action.

Previous issue date: 2008<br>This research investigates the access and permanence of the young scholarship student in a community university. The main objective of this study is to analyze the ways in which vital and social moratorium is questioned by the young scholarship student along his course towards academic development in a community university. The core theoretical assumption is based on a socio-historical and dialectical conception of reality and, thereby, of social phenomena. This study analyzes the creation and challenges of universities in Brazil and Rio Grande do Sul until nowadays and focus community universities and the processes of social inclusion applied by means of study programs and scholarships as Bolsa Filantropia and Programa Universidade para Todos – PROUNI. Methodologically, qualitative research of exploratory type was chosen. The subjects of this research are young scholarship students and managers of programs for scholarship concession in a community university. As a result of this research, it was possible to observe that in the pursue of social ascension , the young scholarship student enters the community university to build academic development but faces several difficulties due to cultural and socio-economical conditions that hinder his permanence in a higher education institution. The Brazilian system of university education proclaims and defends the idea that after obtaining a scholarship, the young scholarship student has total inclusion assured in a community university. Is it evidenced in academic reality? Would the condition of the young scholarship student reveal an illusive process of inclusion?<br>Esta pesquisa investiga o acesso e a permanência do jovem bolsista na universidade comunitária. O objetivo central do estudo constitui-se em analisar como a moratória juvenil (vital e social) é interpelada pelo jovem bolsista na sua trajetória para a formação acadêmica na universidade comunitária. O pressuposto teórico central parte de uma concepção sócio-histórica e dialética da realidade, e, portanto, dos fenômenos sociais. O estudo dialoga sobre o processo de exclusão/inclusão social do jovem bolsista universitário. Analisa a criação da universidade no Brasil e no Rio Grande do Sul até os dias atuais e seus desafios e detém-se sobre a universidade comunitária e os processos de inclusão social que utiliza por meio dos programas de bolsas de estudo, como da Bolsa Filantropia e o Programa Universidade para Todos – PROUNI. Metodologicamente, optou-se pela pesquisa qualitativa, de caráter exploratório. Os sujeitos da pesquisa são os jovens bolsistas e os gestores vinculados aos programas de concessão de bolsa de estudo de uma universidade comunitária. Como resultado da pesquisa, foi possível observar que na busca pela ascensão social o jovem bolsista ingressa na universidade comunitária para fazer sua formação acadêmica, deparando-se com inúmeras dificuldades pela sua condição socioeconômica cultural que obstaculiza a sua permanência na Instituição de Ensino Superior com maior tranqüilidade. O sistema de ensino superior brasileiro preconiza e defende que o jovem bolsista, por ter uma bolsa de estudos, tem assegurada a sua total inclusão na universidade comunitária. Constatase isso na realidade acadêmica? Não seria um processo de inclusão ilusória essa condição do jovem bolsista universitário?

Cette thèse analyse les relations interactionnelles qui existent entre la croissance démographique et le développement économique et social dans le contexte malien. Elle est basée sur l'hypothèse assez générale que la croissance démographique est un frein au développement économique et a l'élévation du niveau de vie. La vérification de cette hypothèse de travail, qui s'inscrit dans la perspective malthusienne, a été faite sur la base de données couvrant la période allant de 1960 à nos jours. Durant les décennies qui ont suivi l'accession du Mali a l'indépendance en 1960. Les pouvoirs publics de ce pays avaient opté pour une politique d'adaptation et de "laisser - faire" vis-à-vis de la fécondité et du taux de croissance démographique. Les analyses faites ont montré comment cette adaptation a été possible au cours des dernières décennies, et quelles ont été ses répercussions sur le niveau et les conditions de vie des maliens. Il ressort des analyses effectuées un constat d'insatisfaction générale des besoins dans tous les secteurs du développement économique et social, une paupérisation de la population et une baisse des niveaux de vie. L'analyse des effets du développement économique et social sur la croissance démographique a montré que le Mali n'a pas encore suffisamment amorce sa transition démographique et familiale mais que les mutations sociales actuellement en cours vont dans le sens d'une modification des comportements traditionnels pronatalistes. Apres avoir été pendant longtemps sourds aux sirènes neo-malthusiennes, les pouvoirs publics maliens ont finalement adopte une politique explicite de population le 8 mai 1991. La thèse analyse le cadre conceptuel et méthodologique de l'élaboration et de la mise en œuvre de cette politique, et indique les modalités de son intégration dans les plans et les programmes de développement du pays.

Cette thèse de doctorat analyse le rôle des stratégies familiales dans les processus de reproduction et de transformation sociale dans la Grèce d’après-guerre. Elle tente de montrer que les familles ont développé, tout au long de la période d’après-guerre, un système de stratégies afin d’assurer sur le plan intergénérationnel la préservation ou l’amélioration de leur statut économique et symbolique. Ces stratégies, qui constituent le « mode de reproduction familial », ont joué un rôle capital dans les processus de transformation sociale du pays (tels que l’urbanisation et la restructuration économique), notamment pendant la première période d’après-guerre. La recherche se focalise sur trois types de stratégies familiales : la pluriactivité, les stratégies résidentielles et les stratégies éducatives. Tout d’abord, à travers les stratégies de pluriactivité, les familles, notamment dans le monde rural, ont fait face à l’exode rural et aux mutations économiques profondes des premières décennies d’après-guerre. Ensuite, les stratégies résidentielles avaient pour objectif l’accession à la propriété, mobilisant principalement l’épargne des ménages, ainsi que les ressources humaines et matérielles des réseaux familiaux. Enfin, les stratégies éducatives, qui ont également mobilisé d’importantes ressources des ménages, exprimaient les efforts des familles pour assurer leur reproduction, voire leur mobilité sociale, sur le plan intergénérationnel à travers l’obtention des diplômes universitaires par leurs enfants. Par ailleurs, la question du rôle de l’État-providence grec est abordée dans les processus de protection et de reproduction sociale. En analysant le développement tardif et fragmentaire de l’État-providence grec, il est démontré que la famille n’a jamais perdu son rôle prépondérant en termes de protection et de reproduction<br>This PhD. Thesis focuses on the role of family strategies in social reproduction and change processes in post-war Greece. It argues that during the whole post-war period, families, according to a normative propensity in pursuing their subsistence, protection and reproduction in an intergenerational perspective, developed a system of strategies in order to assure their social reproduction, namely to assure the preservation or amelioration of their economic and symbolic status. These strategies, that constitute the ‘family mode of reproduction’, played also an important role in social transformation processes (such as urbanization and economic restructuring), notably in the first post-war period. The dissertation focuses particularly in three types of family strategies: pluriactivity, residential and education strategies. With the development pluriactivity strategies, rural families (in particular) tried to cope with deep economic restructuring and rural depopulation during the first post-war decades. Residential strategies aimed at accessing home-ownership, notably in the period of rapid urbanization by mobilizing mainly family savings and exchanges. Educational strategies expressed family aspirations of social reproduction and mobility through the acquisition of university degrees. These strategies also mobilized important proportions of family wealth in order to cope with high competition within the academic field. We finally address the question of the role of the Greek Welfare-State in social protection and reproduction processes. By analysing the late and fragmentary development of public policies, we show that family never lost its prominent role in social protection and reproduction

En Mauritanie, l’utilisation du mot genre comme concept est relativement très récente, elle n’est pas encore réellement effective. Le mot a en effet fait son entrée dans le vocabulaire par le biais des institutions internationales et y reste encore très timidement examiné par le monde scientifique. La rareté des recherches dans le domaine en témoigne. C’est sans doute pour cette raison que gender, comme phénomène social, demeure confus à certains niveaux. A l’égard de cette thématique fondamentale pour le changement social l’absence préalables d’études sociologiques pourtant essentielles, a manifestement favorisé une négligence de la société de manière globale vis-à-vis du respect des droits d’une certaine catégorie sociale. Eu égard à cette situation le concept reste encore assez stéréotypé à cause justement du mauvais usage qui en est fait. De ce fait, la particularité du terrain évoque des questionnements au cours de cette réflexion sociologique qui ont finalement débouché sur une approche clairement pluridisciplinaire axée sur la réflexivité, d’une part, l’éthologie et l’ethnographie d’autre part. Ces multiples questionnements font également intervenir la dimension sociopolitique de l’objet de recherche. Le genre comme outil d’analyse permettant d’appréhender le jeu d’interaction sociale entre les hommes et les femmes, m’amène à apporter quelques éclairages sur le contexte sociétal évolutif de la Mauritanie. Il est effectivement nécessaire de prendre en compte la juste importance de cette réalité sociale tant elle est complexe au regard de la conjoncture internationale. Mon sujet de thèse dessine donc un cadre favorisant d’abord la compréhension, la culture du respect et de la préservation des droits des femmes. Il vise à inciter à l’amélioration de la « condition féminine » en Mauritanie à travers une réelle politique d’inclusion sociale<br>In Mauritania, the use of the word “Gender” as a concept is relatively recent even nascent. The word has entered the vocabulary through international institutions, and it still is reluctantly used by the scientific world. The scarcity of research in the field bears witness to this. It is probably for this reason, that gender as a social phenomenon remains confused at certain levels. The absence of a sociological definition has resulted in a cultural indifference and impeded any societal advance in thinking. The concept is still rather stereotyped because many people embrace it without truly understanding it. Therefore, there are so many meanings attached to it. This study examines the causes of disagreements and the best ways to resolves them. The many inquiries during this sociological review have resulted in a multidisciplinary approach focused on reflexivity on the one hand, on ethnological and ethnography on the other hand. Thus, the multiple inquiries involve the Socio-political dimension of the theme. Moreover, the term "Gender" as an analysis tool helps us understand Social interactions and advancements. Thus, it allows us to examine the reality of our society through the international context. Therefore, this theme outlines a better understanding of the concept of Gender. L'objectif de cette thèse est de retrouver un modèle explicatif du mécontentement à la base d'une théorie sociale constitutive, une théorie qui peut interpréter l'émergence et le développement du mécontentement. Alors, la question essentielle qui va se poser est de savoir pourquoi le mécontentement émerge et comment peut-il être développé, répandu et enfin localisé et contracté dans une société industrialisée présentant contexte social convenable ? Par la construction sociale du mécontentement on entend que le mécontentement est un sentiment naturel qui va être activé, intériorisé et puis extériorisé par des réflexions de situations objectivées de l'extérieur. Dans ce cas, le fonctionnement de mécontentement social et sa relation avec l'ordre social peuvent se remettre en question problèmatiquement. L'inteview avec le questionnaire a été choisi comme la méthod de cette recherche. Les résultats issus de questionnaires démontrent qu'en premier lieu, le mécontentement social se diversifie par certains critères sociaux propres, comme le processus de la professionnalisation ou la division du travail. En deuxième lieu, le mécontentement se fait progressivement relativiser plutôt par la pluralisation de l'injustice sociale et également par la confiance sociale. En troisième lieu, l'intensité et la puissance du mécontentement social se contrôlent socialement par les forces inégales des positions sociales. famílias brasileiras marcadas pela situação de miséria, abandono e violência. Neste
contexto, muitos adolescentes vivenciam a sexualidade e a possibilidade ou a
experiência de ser tornarem pais ou mães, baseados nos valores individuais mas
também relacionados às limitações e possibilidades subjacentes a estes processos. O objetivo deste estudo foi analisar os significados de maternidade e paternidade para adolescentes com experiência de vida nas ruas, relacionando-os ao processo de vulnerabilidade/desfiliação discutido por Castel (2005). Pesquisa social estratégica
realizada de 2004 a 2007 em duas instituições não-governamentais que assistem
adolescentes em situação de rua no município de Goiânia (GO). Participaram deste
estudo 13 adolescentes com idade entre 12 e 17 anos que viviam em situação de rua
há pelo menos 6 meses. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas e analisados no Método de Interpretação de Sentidos segundo os temas
A Danada da Rua e Pai apóia, mãe é 24hs. De uma forma geral, foi possível
identificar como o processo de vulnerabilidade e desfiliação caracteriza e marca a trajetória de vida destes adolescentes. Os processos de significação da maternidade e paternidade são impregnados tanto pelo contexto vivenciado, como também por valores relacionados às relações de gênero consideradas tradicionais na sociedade contemporânea. Assim, foi possível identificar um maior potencial da maternidade como um fator que motiva a adolescente a buscar alternativas para além da vida nas ruas, revertendo a situação de desfiliação social para a de vulnerabilidade, em contraposição ao observado em relação à paternidade para os jovens deste estudo.
_________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT<br>To study about children and adolescent that make the street as their surviving place,
reflects the social vulnerability process experienced by a lot of Brazilian families living
in misery, abandonment and violence situation. In this context, many adolescent live
their sexuality and the possibility or the experience to become fathers or mothers,
based on individual values, but also related to the limitations and subjacent possibilities
to these processes. The aim of this study was to analyze the meanings of maternity
and paternity by adolescents with life experience in streets, relating it to the
vulnerability and disaffiliation process by Castel (2005). It was a strategic social
research developed along 2004 to 2007 in two non-governmental institutions in Goiania
(GO), where adolescents that lives in streets are assisted. The subjects of this study
was adolescents in age among 12 and 17 years old, whose were living in street by 6
months at least. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and analyzed by the
Senses Interpretation Method, through the themes “Damned Street” and “Father
Supports; Mother is 24 Hours”. It was possible to identify how the vulnerability and
disaffiliation process is characterized and determines the life trajectory of these
adolescents. The signification processes of maternity and paternity are impregnated as
by living context as by related values with genre relationship considered traditional in
the contemporary society. Thus, it was possible to identify a large potential of maternity as a factor that motivates the adolescent girl to search for alternatives beyond the street life, reverting the social disaffiliation to the vulnerability situation, in opposition to the observed in paternity meaning for adolescent boys of this study.

Most women who desired women in the period 1910-1965 did not have the identity categories “lesbian” and “bisexual” available to them. Even in this linguistic vacuum, however, many were able to explore same-sex relationships, to engage in physical sexual activity with women, and even to form community on the basis of same-sex desire and behaviour. How were they able to understand themselves in relation to the homophobic world in which they lived?
This dissertation examines the lives of lesbians and bisexual women in English Canada between 1910 and 1965, focusing particularly on the formation of subjectivity in relation to same-sex desires, relationships with partners and families of origin, sexual practices, and community. An analysis of oral testimonies, of journals, and of love letters shows that particular life events—the first awareness of same-sex attraction, physical exploration of that attraction, the finding of a language with which to describe same-sex desires and relationships, the first important same-sex relationship, and the finding of community—served as turning points in the formation of subjectivity. The story of that journey was later expressed as a linear and essentialist “coming out” narrative in which the individual triumphed over homophobia and ignorance and discovered her true self. That narrative structure is both understandable in the context of essentialist definitions of sexual orientation and a politically necessary one, given the need for a single identity category under which to campaign for legal and social recognition.
The two dominant formulations of same-sex relationships between women before 1965—the “romantic friendship” and the “butch-femme relationship”— have obscured and made culturally unintelligible the lives of lower middle-class lesbians and bisexual women who were neither politically active nor fighting publicly for urban lesbian space. This dissertation analyses the lives of this neglected group of women and argues that their subjectivities were constructed not only in relation to sexual attraction, but also in relation to class. Middle-class ideas of respectability and an antagonism to bar culture resulted in the formation of class-specific lesbian subjectivities.
This dissertation also suggests that women in same-sex relationships before the allegedly more liberal decades of the late twentieth century may actually have had slightly better relationships with families of origin than would later be the case. Greater adherence to notions of duty and obligation, fewer economic opportunities enabling women to live independently of family, the lack of a publicly available discourse of pathology with which families could define and reject their wayward daughters, and the lack of later notions of “alternative” lesbian families and community meant that many remained rather closer to their families than would lesbians after 1965.

from the one of a monocrop sugar economy, with the latter noticeably being the backbone of
the country’s economy, to one that progressed into being the custodian of a dynamic and
sophisticated garment-dominated manufacturing industry. Condemned with the misfortune
of not being endowed with natural resources, relative to her mainland African counterparts,
Mauritius, nonetheless, was able to break the shackles of limited economic options and one of
being the ‘basket-case’ to gradually evolving into being the upper-middle-income country -
thus depicting it to be one of the most encouraging economies within the developing world.
Indeed it is captivating that the fruits of the island’s prosperous sugar industry went a long
way in meeting the island’s diversification agenda. Moreover, the ‘Mauritian miracle’ is
glorified by the emergence and sustenance of a comprehensive welfare state which was able
to withstand the harshest economic challenges the country ever faced.
This thesis seeks to provide a broad historical over-view of the factors which aided
the construction of the social democratic regime in Mauritius. It is of the premise that the
social consciousness of the post-colonial leadership in Mauritius laid the foundation for the
entrenchment of ideals of social justice into the Mauritian polity. Instead of letting market
forces operate in their pure form, the state was propelled instead, to take the driver’s seat into
the running of the economy so as to ensure the market and labour become partners in a bid to
help the state meet its social development ideals. It is no wonder that current day welfare
state in Mauritius is the one which is inextricably linked to elections, not just as tool to duck
socio-ethnic disharmony.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Sedert onafhanklikheidswording in 1968 het Mauritius se ekonomiese ontwikkeling
gevorder van die van ’n enkel kommoditeit suiker uitvoerder as die basis van die ekonomie
tot een met ’n dinamiese en gesofistikeerde tekstiel vervaardigingingssektor. Verdoem weens
’n tekort aan natuurlike hulpbronne in vergelyking met ander state in Afrika, het Mauritius
nogtans daarin geslaag om sy tekortkominge te bowe te kom en geleidelik te ontwikkel tot ’n
opper-middel inkomste staat. Suiker uitvoere het inderdaad ’n sleutelrol gespeel in die
diversifikasie van die ekonomie. Die sukses van die ‘Mauritius wonderwerk’ is verder
stukrag gegee deur die inwerkingstelling en voortbestaan van ’n omvattende welvaart staat
wat gehelp het om die ergste ekonomiese uitdagings die hoof te bied.
Hierdie tesis poog om ’n breë historiese oorsig te bied van die faktore wat die
konstruksie van ’n sosiale demokratiese orde in Mauritius aangehelp het. Daar word gewerk
van die premis dat die sosiale bewussyn van die na-koloniale leierskap in Mauritius die
grondleggers was vir die vestiging van ideale van sosiale geregtigheid in die staat se politieke
kultuur. In plaas van ’n ongebreidelde vrye mark ekonomie het die staat egter ’n sleutel
rigtinggewende rol in die ontwikkeling van die ekonomie gespeel en om seker te maak dat
die privaatsektor en arbeid vennote word om sleutel sosiale ekonomiese doelwitte te bereik.
Dit is dus geen wonder dat die bestaande welvaartstaat in Mauritius nou verweef is met
plaaslike verkiesingsverwagtinge nie en nie bloot ’n manier is om sosio-etniese onstabiliteit
te verminder nie.

Intresset för social hållbarhet har vuxit globalt det senaste decenniet och är idag ett fokus i såvälden privata som offentliga sektorn. Det finns en kunskapslucka i hur det strategiska arbetet medsocial hållbarhet utförs i svenska kommuner, vilket uppsatsen önskar bidra till. Länsstyrelsen iHalland gav oss i uppdrag att öka förståelsen för det kommunala arbetet med social hållbarheti Halland. Strävan är att skapa en förståelse för motivet bakom de strategier som uppdagats ochanalysera utvecklingsmöjligheter. Med utgångspunkt i begreppen välfärd, jämlikhet, tillit ochrättvisa har fem av Hallands sex kommuners sociala hållbarhetsarbete undersökts genomintervjuer som tolkats genom teorier från Jämlikhetsanden, The Just City och Feminism sombyråkrati. Uppsatsen redogör också för hur social hållbarhet tolkas och implementeras avrespektive kommun samt hur det sociala hållbarhetsarbetet påverkar invånarnas livsvillkor.Resultatet av studien var att samtliga kommuner nyligen påbörjat arbetet med social hållbarhetoch att det som prioriteras i nuläget framför allt är integration, ungas hälsa, segregation, tillitoch ANDTS. Studiens teoretiska referensram visar att implementering och konkretisering avsocial hållbarhet är viktigt för ett fortsatt godartat arbete med social hållbarhet.<br>The interest for social sustainability has grown global the last decade and is today a focus forthe private and the public sector. There is a knowledge gap in how the strategic work with socialsustainability is done in Swedish municipalities, which the essay wishes to contribute to.Hallands county government assigned us their wish to increase the understanding for themunicipal work done with social sustainability in Halland. The ambition is to create anunderstanding for the motives behind the discovered strategies and analyze opportunities fordevelopment. Based on terms such as welfare, equality, trust and justice the work with socialsustainability made by five of Hallands six municipalities was studied through interviews andinterpreted through the theoretical approach by The Spirit Level, The Just City and Feminismas bureaucracy. The essay also describes how social sustainability is interpreted andimplemented by each municipality and how the work with social sustainability has effect onthe living conditions of the inhabitants. The result show that all municipalities recently begantheir work with social sustainability and that the current priorities are integration, the health ofyoung people, trust and dependency issues. The theoretical reference frame which the study isbased on show that implementation and concreteization of social sustainability is essential fora continued well made work with social sustainability.

Cette recherche vise dans un premier temps à vérifier l'existence d'une transformation profonde de l'assistance polyvalente par une démarche socio-historique comparant l'organisation et les références professionnelles avant et après la décentralisation et le RMI. Cette mise en perspective permet de tracer les ruptures et les contours du nouveau modèle micro-professionnel en cours d'implantation en secteur. Analysant ensuite comment ce modèle s'applique sur le terrain, nous constatons une propagation diversifiée selon les sites. Nous avons envisagé d'expliquer ce phénomène en mobilisant la théorie du two-step flow telle que l'opération centralisée de modernisation conduite par l'état donne lieu à un message général relayé dans leur réseau d'influence par des leaders d'opinion. En fait ce modèle est rapidement apparu mal adapte au contexte d'une semi-profession. Nous avons alors mis en évidence un effet combiné des paramètres d'organisation, de commandement, de dispositions personnelles des acteurs, de dynamique d'équipe et d'environnement de telle sorte que les interactions et tensions qui en résultent élèvent plus ou moins le niveau de convergence des facteurs, l'ordonnancement étant réalisé par des cadres fédérateurs. En conclusion, une sociologie de la diffusion doit tenir compte des effets de champ et des règles constitutives de chaque espace<br>The first goal of this research is to verify, thanks to a socio-historical approach comparing organizational principles and work patterns before and after the introduction of "RMI" (supplementary benefit for people in severe distress) and local decentralization, whether there has been a dramatic change in multi-purpose social relief. With this perspective, the new occupational model currently developing in this sector can be delineated, showing its breaking points and boundaries. The ensuing study of the way this model is actually implemented gives evidence to an uneven propagation according to location. It has been envisaged to explain the phenomenon thanks to the theory of two-step flow. But this theory has shown its limits in a semi-professional context. The combined effect of such parameters as organization, command, skills, group dynamics and environment has been brought to light, so that the resulting interactions and tensions make room for varying degrees of convergence of the factors, the structuring thereof being implemented by mediating cadres. As a conclusion, it may be said that fild effects and the rules which govern the organization of each space have to be taken into account in a sociology of dissemination

The personal social services in Sweden have undergone major changes during recent decades, partly due to the reforms caused by the influence of New Public Management (NPM) and partly due to the trend towards greater specialisation. These changes have had consequences for both social work management and for social work practice. The consequences for practice have gained attention both from research and from the field, but the consequences for managers have rarely been discussed. In this thesis therefore, the attention is directed towards the managers. Inspired by a mixed methods approach, this thesis aims to explore the personal social service managers’ perceptions of their organisational conditions and the content of their everyday work, as well as to interpret the managers’ experiences against the background of NPM influence, increasing specialisation and the specific circumstances that come with managing politically governed organisations. The results show that the personal social service managers in general were former professionals with extensive social work experience. The managerial work was to a great extent perceived as reactive, entailing constant interruptions and acute situations. The managers experienced a heavy workload that appeared to prevent them from engaging in strategic work and leadership to the extent that they would have liked. Substantial proportions of managers were dissatisfied with their own levels of influence compared to that of politicians and, in general, the managers perceived themselves to have more influence regarding aspects that were operational (such as methods and working procedures) compared to aspects related to organisational structure. Through the managers’ descriptions of their relations with politicians, it was revealed that the roles could be muddled, and that both managers and politicians could have difficulties in distinguishing between politics and administration, or politics and profession. Several changes that could be attributed to the influence of NPM were described by the managers. Some changes had consequences for the more technical side of management, e.g. decentralised budget responsibility, increased focus on cost effectiveness and downsizing of support functions. Other changes were more related to the overarching concept of management, which had consequences for the choice of managerial training, the expectations placed on the managers, and to some extent the managers’ own views on what good management should be. Despite the many indications of changes that may be attributed to NPM, an important result in this thesis is that NPM does not appear to have permeated social work to the degree that might have been expected. Rather, there are clear indications of a remaining professional identity among managers on all managerial levels, as well a continuing bureau-professional regime within the personal social services.

The thesis contains three chapters. The first chapter reports on the first large-scale randomized field experiment involving legally-recognized minorities to examine the causal effects of providing performance-based financial incentives based on social or income disadvantage on high stakes university test scores. The results are that the average test scores of the whole cohort goes down by .14 standard deviations when financial incentives were provided by income disadvantage while there is no effect on the test scores when financial incentives were provided by social disadvantage or when financial incentives were provided to all students. The chapter provides evidence of academic non-cooperation when financial incentives are offered by income status and no evidence of such peer effects when prize incentives are given by social disadvantage. The second chapter, which is a joint work with Dr. H.F.Tam, studies the impact of matrimonial laws introduced by the British in British provinces in colonial India during 1800s and early 1900s. Exploiting quasi-random variations of districts that were former British Provinces within each post-independent Indian states, we find that females have 5% lower chances of marrying under the current legal age, and 1.6% higher chance of attending school at 10-16 years old in regions that were formerly British Provinces. Furthermore, using historical Census of India 1901-1931 on marriage status of population between 0-15 years at district level, the chapter estimates the impact of Child Marriage abolition Act (1931) on child marriages in colonial India. The third chapter uses a large-scale novel panel dataset (2005-14) on schools from the Indian state of Assam to test for the impact of violent conflict on female student’s enrolment ratios. We find that a doubling of average killings in a districtyear leads to a 13 per cent drop in girl’s enrolment rate with school fixed effects.

Estudo qualitativo, realizado no Amparo Maternal, maternidade social do Município de São Paulo que oferece alojamento e atendimento à saúde para gestantes em situação de risco social. O objetivo foi compreender como as mulheres vivenciam o processo gravídico e o cuidado de saúde morando nessa instituição. O depoimento de dez mulheres foi obtido por meio de entrevista fenomenológica, com as seguintes questões: qual era sua expectativa ao vir para cá? Como é viver aqui neste período, estando grávida? Como está sendo o cuidado à saúde que você recebe? Foi como você esperava? O que você pretende fazer quando for embora? O referencial teórico da fenomenologia social de Alfred Schütz foi usado. A análise dos depoimentos resultou nas subcategorias que convergiram para quatro categorias concretas do vivido: buscando soluções, o dia-a-dia no Alojamento Social do Amparo, o cuidado à saúde no Amparo Maternal e retornando ao cotidiano com novos projetos. A análise das categorias concretas permitiu a compreensão do tipo vivido mulheres que vivenciaram o processo gravídico, morando em uma instituição social e de saúde, como aquele grupo social que, buscando soluções, procurou acolhimento e mudança na condição de vida, vivenciou o dia-a-dia no Alojamento Social do Amparo, conviveu positiva e negativamente com a experiência do outro, julgou-se em casa, mas também sentiu solidão, privação da liberdade e percebeu possibilidades de aprendizado. No que diz respeito à experiência do cuidado de saúde, vivenciou-a positivamente, considerou que a atenção recebida no parto foi de qualidade, superou as expectativas e pôde criticar o cuidado oferecido. Após vivenciarem o dia-a-dia na instituição, pretendem retornar ao cotidiano com novos projetos. Os resultados obtidos revelaram a importância do Amparo Maternal que atende mulheres grávidas em situação de risco social atenuando angústia, incerteza e medo que podem influenciar os indicadores biológicos de saúde e proporcionar condições reintegração social<br>Qualitative study, carried through at the Amparo Maternal, a social maternity of the City of São Paulo that offers lodging and health assistance for pregnant women in social risk situation. The purpose was to understand how the women deeply live the pregnancy process and the health care when they live in this institution. The deposition of ten women was gotten using a phenomenological interview, with the following questions: what were your expectations when you came to this institution? How is to live in this institution, being pregnant? How is the health care that you are receiving? Was it what you expected? What do you intend to do when you leave the institution? The theoretical framework was Alfred Schütz social phenomenology. The depositions analysis resulted in the subcategories converged to four concrete categories of experienced: searching solutions, daily life in the Amparo Social in Amparo Maternal, health care in Amparo Maternal overcamed the espectations and coming back to the daily activities with new projects. The concrete categories analysis allowed to understand the experienced type women who lived the pregnancy process, living in a social and health institution, as the social group which, searching for solutions, looked for shelter and change in the life condition, lived the daily life at the Amparo Social in Amparo Maternal, coexisted negative and positively with the experience of other, judged itself at home, but also felt solitude, freedom privation and perceived learning possibilities. Concern to the experience of health care, the social group lived it positively, and they considered that the attention received during the childbirth was of quality and could criticize the offered care. The results disclosed the importance of Amparo Maternal institution for taking care of pregnant women in social risk situation, for attenuating affliction, and uncertain and fear that can influence the biological health indicators and to provide conditions for social reintegration

A presente pesquisa teve por objetivo estudar o princípio da melhoria da condição social do trabalhador, como elemento central e teleológico do direito do trabalho, a fim de verificar aspectos relevantes para a contextualização sociológica, histórica e jurídica desse ramo do direito e contribuir para a construção de uma racionalidade de justiça social. Partindo da intrínseca relação do direito do trabalho com o sistema capitalista de produção e com o conflito de classes sociais inerente ao referido sistema, questionou-se o papel desse ramo jurídico, como instrumento de emancipação da classe trabalhadora ou de preservação dos interesses do capital. A finalidade da doutrina da conciliação das classes sociais e alguns dos principais aspectos de sua implementação no Brasil foram trazidos para o conjunto analítico. Foram analisados os reflexos das transformações do Estado e, portanto, do direito, para o princípio da melhoria da condição social do trabalhador, a partir das mudanças de uma estrutura normativa liberal para a social, passando pelo impacto da ideologia neoliberal e da reestruturação produtiva das últimas décadas. A dinâmica normativa dos princípios e em especial do princípio da melhoria da condição social do trabalhador e a verificação de aspectos importantes da relação deste princípio com outros centrais do direito do trabalho foram abordadas. Foram revisitadas as principais técnicas e situações jurídicas de aplicação do princípio em estudo, a partir da perspectiva de direito social e da contribuição para o fortalecimento da classe trabalhadora. Por fim, apresentouse uma reflexão, à luz do princípio da melhoria da condição social do trabalhador, a respeito da problemática da terceirização, da rotatividade da mão de obra e do excesso de jornada de trabalho.<br>This research aimed to study the principle of improvement of workers social conditions, as a central and teleological element of Labor Law in order to analise relevant aspects for the sociological, historical and legal contextualization of this branch of Law and also to contribute to the development of social justice rationality. Based on the intrinsic relationship of Labor Law with the production capitalist system and also based on the class conflict which is inherent in the previously mentioned system, the role of this branch of Law was questioned as an emancipation tool for the working class or as a tool for preserving the interests of the capital. The purpose of the doctrine of reconciliation of social classes and some of the key aspects of its implementation in Brazil were scrutinized. Reflections of state transformations were analyzed and therefore the right to the principle of improvement of the workers social conditions were also analyzed, based on changes which would alter a liberal regulatory framework into a social one, through the impact of neoliberal ideology and of the restructuring of productive decades. The dynamics of normative principles and in particular the principle of improvement of workers social condition and the analysis of important aspects of its relationship with other central principles of Labor Law were addressed. The main technical and legal situations of application of the principle being studied were rewied from the perspective of Social Law and from the perspective of contribution to strengthening of the working class. Finally, a reflection, under the light of the principle of improvement of workers social condition, about the issues of outsourcing, labor turnover and excessive working hours presented.

Previous issue date: 2010-06-07<br>We propose to study the social justice in it s pre-modern and moderns conceptions as well
as the different strategies of the implement of fundamental social rights and in a more
general way the right to development and social inclusion with the intention of configuring
this social justice to our time and to the brazilian legal system. We found out that the term
social justice is based in the articles 170 and 193 of the 1988 Federal Constitution,
referring to the different ways of the implement of the social rights in the sense of
subjecting the state to the realization of the called minimum vital which, regarded in this
light, offers minimum social inclusion, in terms of these social rights, has the purpose of
the accomplishment of human dignity. Besides, it constitutes the foundation to the real
equality and liberty among the citizens thus making possible the full development of the
brazilian society<br>Neste trabalho, nos propomos a estudar a Justiça Social em suas concepções pré-moderna
e moderna, bem como as diferentes estratégias de positivação dos direitos fundamentais
sociais, e, em linhas gerais, o direito ao desenvolvimento e a inclusão social, com intuito
de configurar a Justiça Social nos nossos dias e no ordenamento jurídico brasileiro.
Constatamos que o termo Justiça Social - presente nos arts. 170 e 193 da Constituição
Federal de 1988 - alude às diferentes formas de positivação dos direitos sociais, no
sentido de se condicionar o Estado à concretização do alcunhado mínimo vital que, à vista
de oferecer uma inclusão social mínima - em matéria destes direitos sociais -, tem por
finalidade a observência do princípio da dignidade da pessoa humana, e, ademais,
constitui base à igualdade e à liberdade reais entre os cidadãos, possibilitando o
desenvolvimento pleno da sociedade brasileira

The purpose of the current study is to examine the academic and social functioning of college students with a chronic physical health condition (CPHC). For the current study, chronic physical health condition will be defined as follows: “A physical [or mental] health condition that has lasted or is expected to last at least 6 months and interferes with their activities,” (Varni & Limbers, 2008, p. 107). The sample consisted of 174 participants attending Western Kentucky University. Two groups (CPHC vs. Healthy) were comprised based on the participants’ self-reported health status. Participants were solicited through Western Kentucky University’s department of Psychology Study Board as well as through the university’s Department of Disability Services. The participants completed the demographics questionnaire, Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory for Young Adults (PEDSQL), and the Costello-Comrey Depression and Anxiety Scales (CCDAS). All the measures were completed online. Three hypotheses were made. Hypothesis one stated that college students who have a chronic physical condition will have a lower level of social functioning when compared to their healthy peers. Hypothesis two stated that college students who have a chronic physical health condition will have a lower level of educational adjustment when compared to their healthy peers. Hypothesis three stated that female college students who have a chronic physical health condition will endorse higher levels of the internal symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. Results yielded support for the second hypothesis, as individuals with a CPHC did report lower levels of academic adjustment than healthy individuals. The first hypothesis was marginally supported as participants with a CPHC reported lower levels of social functioning than healthy individuals. The third hypothesis was not supported as females and males with a CPHC reported similar levels of anxiety and depression.
