La vie privée et sa protection sont aujourd'hui largement discutées. Membres de la société civile, juristes ou encore techniciens, nous sommes tous appelés à nous emparer d'une notion que l'on nous présente à la fois comme menacée, désuète ou appartenant à nos libertés fondamentales. Aujourd'hui, les controverses autour de la protection de la vie privée ont pour origine des usages techniques. L'informatisation des fichiers étatiques et les possibilités accrues de surveillance issues des innovations en informatique et, plus récemment, les « usages sociaux » des outils numériques comme les « réseaux sociaux », provoquent de vives réactions. Pourtant, le recours à cette notion, notamment pour protéger les libertés individuelles, est-il complètement satisfaisant alors que, d'une part, les outils à l'origine de sa mise en question suscitent un large engouement, et que, d'autre part, ses contours sont mal définis? Nous adoptons, pour répondre à cette question, une position interdisciplinaire. D'une part, nous enquêtons d'un point de vue philosophique sur la « condition numérique » contemporaine afin d'en saisir les enjeux. Ce faisant, nous établissons que les outils numériques remettent en cause la notion de « frontiére ». Nous montrons simultanément que la possibilité d'une existence séparée est nécessaire pour constituer une subjectivité propre. Se pose alors la question de la mise en pratique d'une telle existence. Nous nous éloignons des approches déontologiques et utilitaristes qui guident actuellement la conception et l'évaluation des outils numériques pour leur préférer une approche fondée sur « l'éthique du souci de soi ». Cette approche nous conduit à établir que le code informatique constitue la structure de la condition numérique et qu'il s'agit de prendre en compte, dés la conception d'une application un ensemble de propriétés, comme la protection de la vie privée. Nous cherchons dans un second temps à aider les concepteurs d'applications à concevoir au mieux et à réaliser des applications qui permettent de protéger la vie privée des utilisateurs et des possesseurs des données. Notre domaine d'application est l'approche orientée services qui est aujourd'hui un largement utilisée. Nous nous concentrons sur son utilisation pour la réalisation d'applications à partir de compositions de services dynamiques et hétérogènes. Nous cherchons à protéger la vie privée à l'aide du contrôle d'accès. Pour ce faire, nous proposons de configurer les propriétés de contrôle d'accès des services au moyen d'une démarche dirigée par les modèles divisée en deux étapes. Au niveau conception, la composition et la politique de contrôle d'accès à un niveau abstrait sont spécifiées par des experts dédiés. Nous estimons que le contrôle d'accès doit être pris en compte dés la conception de l'application afin d'éviter le recours à la programmation manuelle. En rester à un niveau abstrait permet de s'adapter à l'état de la composition et à l'hétérogénéité et au dynamisme des services. Au niveau exécution, notre architecture permet de configurer les services concrets au moyen de proxies responsables de l'exécution du contrôle d'accès. Des transformations de modèles vers textes automatisées permettent de passer d'un niveau à l'autre afin de s'abstraire de la programmation manuelle et de garantir la protection des services concrets par les proxies. Notre approche a été validée par la réalisation d'un prototype et son utilisation sur un cas d'application
Privacy is hot topic. Lawyers, technicians and plain people are all concerned by this notion. Nowadays, most discussions focus on the effects of digital tools, such as social media or surveillance software. However, privacy is still ill-defined. Moreover, digital tools which endanger privacy are widely used. Should not we leave privacy aside and accept that we are, maybe more than ever, visible ?In this doctoral thesis, I address this question from a twofold viewpoint. I first inquire into the nature of our digital condition from a philosophical standpoint. I claim that digital artifacts rework the implementation of our frontiers, be them geographical or social. However, I contend that such frontiers are necessary. As I show that code defines the structure and the effects of digital tools, I point out that properties such as privacy management should be addressed right from the conception of software applications.Helping out designers to address such properties is the second issue I tackle. I focus on Service-Oriented Computing as it is a widely used paradigm. Most speci- fically, I deal with the composition of heterogenous and dynamic services. I define access control as an efficient mechanism to protect privacy and I propose a twofold generative approach to secure services compositions. The composition and its access control policies are separately defined at an abstract level. An expert is responsible for each of them. As we promote an abstract description of the application, we free the designer from technical complexity. At runtime, we propose an architecture which selects and protects the actual services by hiding them behind proxies which run the access control policy. Automated model transformations permit to generate the application from its specification. We thus bypass manual programming. We have implemented a modeling and execution environment and applied our approach to a use case in order to validate our work

The thesis is focused on administration and supervision of Service oriented architecture (SOA). The main idea of SOA is system decomposition to functional units, which contain bounded and well understandable functionality. This functionality, in form of service, is provided to other units through clearly described interface. Well-identified relationships between service provider and service consumer are created. SOA governance aims to manage these relationships, to monitor quality of services and to control adherence of stated rules and policies. These rules and policies are established by central team responsible for integration and architecture development. Starting point of successful architecture development is acquaintance of service portfolio and their inter-relationships. Each service should go through whole formal life-cycle, which particular phases have special policies applied. Main interest is devoted to run-time phase - run-time monitoring and run-time governance. Theory is complemented by practical examples of report generation and service monitoring with SLA adherence observation. The thesis also contains structural model of SOA governance taking into account infrastructural elements of SOA and information flows between them.

Vi lever i en värld med konstanta förändringar. I en värld med beslut som drastiskt fattas från olika verksamhetledningars håll. Verksamheter behöver hela tiden kunna möta kraven från kunden och den tekniska utvecklingen. Hur ska man då göra detta? Uppsatsen vars titel är ”Anledningar att implementera SOA” kommer att behandla de anledningar till SOA-implementering som enligt oss är viktiga och prioriterade. Vår studie var kvalitativt inriktad. Den inleddes med en intervju som resulterade i en förståelse för vad SOA egentligen innebär, men även viktiga anledningar som intervjupersonen använde för att argumentera för SOA-implementering. Denna förståelse för SOA och anledningar till att implementera SOA jämfördes sedan med teori vilket resulterade i teorikapitlet. När teorikapitlet hade skapats behövdes det en delphistudie som utfördes med enkäter för att, i analysen, kunna diskutera hur prioriterade de framtagna anledningarna var. Intervjun har på så sätt skapat teorikapitlet och teorikapitlet har i sin tur skapat delphienkäten. Responsen på delphienkäten ledde fram till analysen som utfördes i enlighet med analysmetoden. Sist har vi i utvärderingen beskrivit hur vi ser på vår uppsats så här i efterhand. Uppsatsen är resulterad i en form av förståelse av hur verksamheter skiljer sig i sin uppfattning om ett paradigm (strategi). Dock skildrar uppsatsen det huvudsakliga om SOA och tar fram resultatet som studien går ut på, att ta fram de viktiga och prioriterade anledningarna, genom den anlys som har utförts. Med andra ord resulteraade studien i att det är viktigt att förstå sig på sin strategi och det är viktigt att förstå sig på sina grundpelare. Därför att med tiden förändras tekniken, så förändras också hur besluten tas vilket i sin tur påverkar sättet att styra strategiskt (governance) för att möta konkurrensen. Uppsatsen skildrar i den meningen hur pelarna bygger en stadig framtid. Det vill säga genom flexibilitet, lösa kopplingar och återanvändingsbarhet som för en ledning skapar en framtidsäkerhet och kostnadseffektiv konkurrans genom att bygga pelarna på det här sättet.

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) governance has been identified as the most important factor affecting the outcome of SOA within organisations. However, authors have failed to explain how organisations should govern specific aspects of its SOA, leaving a gap in the literature. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate established SOA governance mechanisms in order to explain implications of governance in a SOA context. The research question of the study was to identify which SOA governance mechanisms do or do not provide support for different constituents of SOA. The study also contained three sub-questions; (i) Is there a difference between how SOA governance mechanisms support technical vs. non technical constituents of SOA? (ii) Is there any SOA governance mechanism that is more important than others? (iii) Is there a relation between the SOA governance mechanisms?   The study was conducted using theories related to SOA and SOA governance. We identified the most academically accepted SOA governance mechanisms to test their support for different constituents of SOA. To get an holistic view of SOA, we used a SOA maturity framework to identify what the constituents of SOA really are. The support of the SOA governance mechanisms were then studied in relation to the different constituents of SOA, through interviews and observations, during a ten week internship at Scania.   The results showed that as good as every SOA governance mechanism supports the constituents of SOA, although the level of support varied. In general, we found patterns separating the support for technological and non-technological constituents of SOA. The technological constituents of SOA were to a great extent provided the same support from SOA governance mechanisms, which also was true for the non-technological constituents of SOA. Interestingly, except for one SOA governance mechanism, the technological constituents of SOA and the non-technological obtained different levels of support from governance. The most important SOA governance mechanisms are the creation of standards and policies, having processes to create and enforce policies, processes for education, and establishing SOA skills and training. We can also conclude that there is a relationship between many of the SOA governance mechanisms, and that academics and practitioners therefore have to view SOA governance holistically, rather than independent governance mechanisms.

Neste trabalho, foram investigados e analisados conceitos fundamentais da metodologia de BPM (Business Process Modeling) através de sua notação BPMN (Business Process Modelling Notation), bem como o desenvolvimento de software por meio da UML (Unified Modeling Language), ambas atreladas à arquitetura SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture), com o objetivo de integrar as áreas de desenvolvimento de software e de gestão de empresas, a fim de possibilitar uma visão macro dos processos. Optou-se por analisar BPM, pois sua metodologia garante uma prática de desenvolvimento rápido do sistema, tornando-o flexível, e permite a sua reutilização, com uso de tecnologias legadas, pois empresas conseguem alcançar um maior controle dos processos de negócio. Já a UML possibilita a padronização na modelagem de software e, assim como BPM, com possível integração com SOA. O objetivo deste estudo é fazer a apresentação dos diversos cenários verificados a partir de um amplo levantamento da literatura que trata dessa integração. Dessa maneira, foi realizada uma comparação quantitativa e qualitativa dos cenários encontrados, a fim de definir qual é a melhor possibilidade de integração para uma empresa. Tudo isso para assegurar a interoperabilidade entre diferentes entidades, agregando valor e reduzindo custos de manutenção para as empresas. Através de descritores selecionados, foi feita uma busca em bases de dados específicas para levantar trabalhos publicados sobre a integração BPM-SOA e UML-SOA. Esse levantamento permitiu observar distintos cenários de integração, além das vantagens, desvantagens e problemas mencionados por seus autores. A finalidade é compreender quais os principais entraves relacionados à integração e implementação de BPM-SOA e UML-SOA que seja capaz de comprovar, quantitativa e qualitativamente, as integrações e apontar qual a melhor possibilidade.
In this study, we investigated and analyzed the fundamental concepts of BPM methodology (Business Process Modeling) through its BPMN notation (Business Process Modelling Notation) and software development through the UML (Unified Modeling Language), both linked to architecture SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) with the aim of integrating the software development areas and business management, in order to provide a macro view of the processes. We chose to analyze BPM, because its methodology ensures a practice of rapid system development, making it flexible, and allows reuse, using legacy technologies, as companies can achieve greater control of business processes. Already the UML allows for standardization in software modeling and, as BPM, with possible integration with SOA. The aim of this study is to make the presentation of the various scenarios checked from a broad survey of the literature dealing with this integration. Thus, a quantitative and qualitative comparison of the scenarios found was carried out in order to define what is the best possibility of integration for a company. All this to ensure interoperability between different entities, adding value and reducing maintenance costs for companies. Through selected keywords, a search was made in specific databases for up papers on the integration BPM-SOA and UML-SOA. This survey allowed to observe different integration scenarios, beyond the advantages, disadvantages and problems mentioned by the authors. The purpose is to understand what the main obstacles related to the integration and implementation of BPM-SOA and SOA-UML to be able to prove quantitatively and qualitatively, the integrations and point out what the best possibility.

Affärsnytta är ett mångtydigt och svårdefinierat begrepp, men det är något som alla verksamheter vill uppnå.Uppsatsen avgränsar sig till särskilda kvalitativa egenskaper som definieras av ISO/IEC FDIS 25010:2010 under kapitlet "Quality in use". Uppsatsen går ut på att utvärdera de kvalitativa egenskaperna och om SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) bidrar till dessa samt inom vilken aspekt av affärsnytta. För att svara på frågan var det relevant att utvärdera begreppen Affärsnytta och Kvalitativ nytta samt definiera SOA.Resultatet fick vi genom kvalitativa intervjuer från fyra respondenter som har deltagit i ett lyckat SOA projekt och har goda kunskaper inom SOA och dess koppling till affärsnytta inom olika aspekter.Utifrån litteraturen och resultatet ser vi indikationer på att SOA bidrar till de utvalda kvalitativa egenskaperna. Resultatet visar även indikationer på att SOA bidrar till kvalitativ nytta och att det är en drivande kraft för strävan av affärsnytta.
Business value is ambiguous and very hard to define, but it is something that all enterprises strive for.The thesis focuses on specific quality characteristics defined by ISO / IEC FDIS 25010:2010 chapter "Quality in use". The thesis aims to evaluate the qualitative attributes and to find out if SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) contributes to these and in what aspect of business value. To answer the question it was relevant to define Business Value, Qualitative value and SOA.Our results are based on four qualitative interviews from respondents who have participated in a successful SOA project and have knowledge about SOA and it’s connection to business value in various aspects.We see indications that SOA contributes to the selected qualitative characteristics based on the litterature and result. The result also indicates that SOA contributes to qualitative value and that it is the driving force behind the pursuit of business value.

Healthcare organizations need to handle many kinds of information and integrate different support systems, which may be accessed from external corporations. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) provides the means to achieve a common platform to deploy services that can be used across the organization and its boundaries, but introduces new security concerns that need to be evaluated in order to implement a secure system, while still suffering from standard threats. Web Services are the common way to implement SOA applications, having several standards related to security (such as XML Encryption, XML Signature and WS-Security). Still, other security mechanisms such as input validation and SSL/TLS need to be thought of as well. A penetration test based on recognized methodologies and guidelines, such as the NIST Technical Guide to Information Security Testing and Assessment, OWASP Testing Guide and SIFT Web Services Security Testing Framework, was performed on a case study system. A proof of concept application making use of a set of middleware (web) services, the MPOWER platform, was audited in order to expose vulnerabilities. After conducting the penetration test on the system, 10 out of 15 scenarios presented security issues. The vulnerabilities found were described, demonstrating several risks from misusing, or not implementing at all, security mechanisms. As a consequence, countermeasures and recommendations were proposed in an attempt to improve the overall security of SOA-based (healthcare) systems. The results of the assessment show us how important is to validate the security of a system before putting it into production environment. We also come to the conclusion that security testing should be an inherent part of a secure software development life cycle. Moreover, not only healthcare systems may benefit from this study, and also not only SOA-based ones.

The aim of my diploma thesis is to introduce cloud computing as an alternative to traditional internal information technology and its benefits for a company. Diploma thesis focuses on three main goals. The first one concerns advantages and disadvantages of cloud computing in comparison to internal information technology. The second one is identification of possible processes and services available for migration into cloud computing. The third goal of the diploma thesis is development of investment analysis which compares not only initial costs on internal information technology and cloud computing, but also costs of both variants within three years. The main contribution of the diploma thesis is to define whether the cloud computing is economically beneficial for the company or not. The argument for categorizing cloud computing is in the reason that the company does not have to use all services within the cloud computing but only these, which the company considers as the most beneficial from cost and operation point of view. Another contribution of the diploma thesis is deployment of data, services and processes into a chosen cloud computing platform. Investment analysis allows through cost comparison of both options understand whether it is more beneficial to choose cloud computing or internal Information Technology platform. During this decision making the company also considers its business character and the fact whether the company operates locally or globally.

The thesis summarizes the history of enterprise application integration and shows the estimated benefits and risks that arise from attempts to harmonize corporate IT infrastructure. It also describes the main approaches to the integration and evaluates their resistance in terms of time. The thesis relates a modern interpretation of the integration of SOA (Service Oriented Architecture), including related standards. Particular attention is paid to the life cycle of services in SOA. It explains possible approaches and key principles of communication layer integrated business application system in terms of architectural design. D'aucuns souhaiteraient que ces équipements puissent intelligemment réagir à l'activité de l'utilisateur afin de l'assister dans ces activités de tous les jours. Le domaine de l'Informatique Pervasive adresse la vision de ce monde naturellement numérique assistant les individus sans être intrusif. Face aux défis de l'Informatique Pervasive dans les réseaux locaux, notamment la distribution, l'hétérogénéité et la dynamique des équipements, cette thèse répond par une ligne de conduite et l'approche logicielle Home SOA. Cette ligne de conduite distingue les situations où les solutions protocolaires sont pertinentes et ramène les autres situations à des problèmes de génie logiciel. Parmi les solutions protocolaires, la proposition d'une interface uniforme de gestion de cycle de vie logiciel dans le Comité de Travail UPnP Device Management est une des contributions importantes. Le Home SOA est l'association de technologies de développement modulaire et d'un ensemble de patrons de conception orientés objets. Au-delà de l'orientation objet, le Home SOA exploite les modèles récents de composants à services et le concept de plateforme de services. Les pilotes orientés service masquent les aspects distribués tout en réifiant la dynamique des entités pervasives sur la plateforme. Les pilotes raffinés adaptent les objets mandataires dans des interfaces à la sémantique du domaine d'application visé. La contextualisation des services de la plateforme alliée à une automatisation de la sélection de service achève de simplifier le développement d'applications pervasives. Le cadriciel est implémenté au-dessus de la plateforme OSGi et est validé par la réalisation d'applications conscientes du contexte et mixant des domaines d'applications distincts dans le réseau domestique
Pervasive Computing aims at filling our environment with communication devices in order to assist us in our daily activities without our explicit intervention. Indeed, in the near future, human beings will engage interactions with a number of smart devices, faded in into the environment, without being aware of their location or their precise nature and without going through complex, specific interfaces. Addressing Pervasive Computing challenges in local networks such as device distribution, heterogeneity and dynamicity, this thesis exposes a conduct line and a software approach named Home SOA. This conduct line distinguishes the situations where protocol-based solutions are relevant and turn the other situations into Software Engineering problems. Among the protocol-based solutions, the proposition of a uniform protocol interface for software lifecycle management in the UPnP Device Management Working Committee is one of the major contributions. The Home SOA promotes a set of object-oriented design patterns above modular software platform technologies. Beyond the object orientation, the Home SOA makes benefit of recent service component models and the service platform concept. Distribution is hidden by service-oriented drivers while network dynamicity is locally reified on the platform. Distributed objects are turned by refined drivers into interfaces semantically close to the targeted application domain. Service contextualization and service selection automation reach the objective of simplifying the development or pervasive applications. The proposed framework is implemented on the OSGi platform and is validated by the realization of context-aware applications mixing distinct application domains in the Home network

One of the most crucial decisions when developing a system based on Service Oriented Architecture is to select an appropriate server which will be the ground for building the application. Similar to databases, an application server has significant influence on efficiency, stability, and security of entire system. During the preparation of architecture for system development one has to decide which available application server would be optimal for hosting and maintaining v Web Services in the given case. There are multiple significant criteria that lead to the proper choice. The impact on a decision among other things is type of the physical machine on which the application server is installed, estimated number of simultaneous clients, and sizes of requests and responses between clients and server. The goal for this thesis is to conduct the comparative analysis of the most commonly used application servers using Service Oriented Architecture and to determine which server should be applied in which particular cases. Performance and load tests will be conducted using SoapUI application.

Corporations are actively pursuing business model innovation and organizational agility in the quest for sustainable competitive advantage in today??s global marketplace. The paradigm of service-oriented computing (SOC) has emerged as a popular approach to flexibility and agility, not just in systems development but also in business process management. The associated concept of service-oriented architecture (SOA) enables the defining of business flows as technology independent services, potentially providing avenues for agility in business process transformation. This architectural concept is growing in popularity and is being rapidly adopted by industry organizations. Studies of the practical impacts of adopting SOA are crucial because it involves a non-trivial and expensive overhaul of both business and technology infrastructures. There is, however, a paucity of critical research on the adoption of SOA. What is needed is a focus on the study of the real-world adoption of SOA across the enterprise and the factors that aid or impede such adoptions. This research examines the organizational use of SOA, both analytically and empirically through case studies, and posits a diffusion framework for the adoption and implementation of SOA as an enterprise strategy. The SOA Diffusion Framework addresses the following key areas ?? the organizational factors influencing the decision to adopt SOA, the organizational aspects of adopting and implementing SOA, and the outcomes or realized benefits of implementing SOA across the enterprise. For researchers, this study (i) fills a crucial knowledge gap because there is little empirical evidence of the practical use of SOA, (ii) adds to the innovation diffusion literature, (iii) introduces a tool to assess the organizational impact of SOA, and (iv) provides direction for future research into the organizational factors relating to the enterprise adoption of service-orientation. For practitioners, this study provides an adoption framework and a set of guidelines to help implement SOA successfully across the enterprise.

L’amplification optique large bande à base de SOA est devenue indispensable pour la montée en débit des systèmes de transmissions optiques et pour pouvoir exploiter au mieux la bande optique des fibres optiques. Ce travail présente une étude théorique et expérimentale d’un SOA large bande passante développé par Alcatel Thales III-V Lab dans le cadre des projets ANR AROME et UltraWIDE. Dans cette thèse, nous avons d’abord effectué une modélisation semi-phénoménologique du gain matériau et du coefficient de gain d’une structure à base de multi-puits quantiques avec un nombre réduit de paramètres. L’intégration de notre modèle dans un modèle de SOA déjà développé au laboratoire a montré son efficacité pour restituer quantitativement le comportement statiques (gain, facteur de bruit) des nouvelles structures SOA large bande sur une large plage de longueurs d’onde (> 110 nm), de courants d’alimentation et de puissances optiques. A l’aide de ce modèle, nous avons étudié l’influence de la structure du SOA sur la bande passante pour un gain cible en jouant sur la longueur, le nombre d’électrode et le courant d’alimentation du SOA. Nous avons mis en évidence qu’une structure bi-électrodes n’apportait pas d’amélioration de la bande passante optimisée par rapport au cas mono-électrode. En revanche, la structure bi-électrode permet d’optimiser la puissance de saturation et le facteur de bruit du SOA, sans sacrifier ni le gain maximal ni la bande passante optique. Nous avons aussi montré que, pour ce type de composants, une augmentation de la puissance optique injectée pouvait être compensée par une augmentation du courant d’alimentation pour maintenir une large bande passante optique. Nous avons également mis en place deux techniques d’élargissement de la bande passante optique de SOA à large bande. La première technique est fondée sur le filtrage en réflexion spectralement sélectif (ESOA). Le dispositif expérimental a permis d’amplifier simultanément 8 canaux CWDM dans une bande passante (définie à −1 dB) de 140 nm. La deuxième technique, basée sur un amplificateur hybride Raman-SOA, a fourni une bande passante optique (définie à −1 dB) de 89 nm avec un gain de 17 dB. Nous avons ainsi pu réaliser une transmission simultanée de 5 canaux CWDM allant jusqu’à 10 Gb/s sur 100 km
SOA-based optical amplification became crucial for increasing optical system capacity and to benefit from the broad bandwidth of optical fibers. In this work we present both theoretical and experimental studies for a new broadband SOA developed by Alcatel Thales III-V lab in the framework of AROME and UltraWIDE ANR projects.We developed firstly a semi-phenomenological model for both the material gain and the gain coefficient of a multi-quantum well -based SOA structure with a reduced set of parameters. This material gain model has been integrated in an existing SOA model and proved its performance in reproducing steady state behavior of this new broadband SOA (gain and noise figure) for a wide range of wavelengths, input powers and bias currents. Thanks to this model, we studied the influence of the SOA geometrical structure on the optical bandwidth for a given target gain, by varying length, number of electrodes and bias current. We showed that two-electrode SOA structures do not provide any improvement of the bandwidth compared to the one-electrode case. However, the two-electrode structure allows the optimization of both the SOA saturation power and the noise figure, without sacrificing neither the maximum gain nor the optical bandwidth. We have also shown that for this kind of component, an increase in the injected optical power could be compensated by an increase in the supply current to maintain a wide optical bandwidth.We have also investigated two techniques to widen the optical bandwidth of our broadband SOA. The first one is based on a modification of the SOA structure by introducing a selective reflection filter (ESOA). Its experimental implementation allowed the amplification of an 8-CWDM-channel comb in a bandwidth (defined at -1 dB) of 140 nm. The second one, based on a hybrid Raman-SOA amplifier, provided an optical bandwidth (defined at -1 dB) of 89 nm with a gain of 17 dB. With this last technique, we were able to achieve a 5-CWDM-channel comb transmission up to 10 Gb/s over 100 km

Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) provides a standards-based conceptual framework for flexible and adaptive systems and has become widely used in the recent years because of it. The number of legacy systems has already been migrated to this platform. As there are still many systems under consideration of such migration, we found it relevant to share the existing experience of SOA migration and highlight challenges that companies meet while adopting SOA. As not all of these migrations were successful, we also look into factors that have influence on the success of SOA projects. The research is based on two methods: a literature review and a survey. The results of the thesis include identification and quantitative analysis of the challenges and success factors of SOA projects. We also compare the survey results for different samples (based on the company industry, work area, size, and respondents experience with SOA and respondents job positions). In total, 13 SOA challenges and 18 SOA success factors were identified, analyzed and discussed in this thesis. Based on the survey results, there are three SOA challenges received the highest importance scores: “Communicating SOA Vision”, “Focus on business perspective, and not only IT perspective” and “SOA Governance”. The highest scored SOA success factor is “Business Process of Company”. While comparing different samples of the survey results, the most obvious differences are identified between the results received from people with development related job positions and people with business related job positions, and the results from companies of different sizes.

The widely accepted standards of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) have changed the way many organisations conduct their everyday business. The significant popularity of mobile devices has seen a rapid increase in the rate of mobile technology enhancements, which have become widely used for communication, as well as conducting everyday tasks. An increased requirement in many businesses is for staff not to be tied down to the office. Consequently, mobile devices play an important role in achieving the mobility and information access that people desire. Due to the popularity and increasing use of SOA and mobile devices, Mobile Service-Oriented Architecture (Mobile SOA) has become a new industry catch-phrase. Many challenges, however, exist within the Mobile SOA environment. These issues include limitations on mobile devices, such as a reduced screen size, lack of processing power, insufficient processing memory, limited battery life, poor storage capacity, unreliable network connections, limited bandwidth available and high transfer costs. This research aimed to provide an elegant solution to the issues of a mobile device, which hinders the performance of Mobile SOA. The main objective of this research was to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Mobile SOA. In order to achieve this goal, a framework was proposed, which supported intelligent compression of files used within a Web Service. The proposed framework provided a set of guidelines that facilitate the quick development of a system. A proof-of-concept prototype was developed, based on these guidelines and the framework design principles. The prototype provided practical evidence of the effectiveness of implementing a system based on the proposed framework. An analytical evaluation was conducted to determine the effectiveness of the prototype within the Mobile SOA environment. A performance evaluation was conducted to determine efficiency it provides. Additionally, the performance evaluation highlighted the decrease in file transfer time, as well as the significant reduction in transfer costs. The analytical and performance evaluations demonstrated that the prototype optimises the effectiveness and efficiency of Mobile SOA. The framework could, thus, be used to facilitate efficient file transfer between a Server and (Mobile) Client.

The Defense (DoD) is interested in acquiring systems that promote the use of open architecture (OA). Industry has successfully implemented service-oriented architecture (SOA) in its processes and may provide a benchmark for cost savings as well as examples of best practices for the DoD. The basic research question guiding this thesis is, What are the industry cost-saving benchmarks when transitioning to SOA from a proprietary system? The research supports the argument that OA in the DoD is similar to SOA in industry. This comparison is essential for the application of this thesis because this allows the outcomes of industry SOA implementation to be translated into what the DoD can expect from its OA implementations. This research then answers the research question by analyzing 34 industry reports, 18 of which provided at least an overall ROI, and 10 of which broke out their ROI calculations into separate cost types. The reported costs were grouped into categories of cost savings, cost avoidance, or productivity improvements. The researcher concluded that the industry ROI for SOA implementation is 72%. Additionally, best practices in industry that are transferable to DoD were indentified, including ensuring system flexibility and implementing SOA incrementally.

Service-Orientation has long provided an effective mechanism to integrate heterogeneous systems in a loosely coupled fashion as services. However, with the emergence of Internet of Things (IoT) there is a growing need to facilitate the integration of real-time services executing in non-controlled, non-real-time, environments such as the Cloud. As such there has been a drive in recent years to develop mechanisms for deriving reliable Quality of Service (QoS) definitions based on the observed performance of services, specifically in order to facilitate a Real-Time Quality of Service (RT-QoS) definition. Due to the overriding challenge in achieving this is the lack of control over the hosting Cloud system many approaches either look at alternative methods that ignore the underlying infrastructure or assume some level of control over interference such as the provision of a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). There is therefore a major research challenge to find methods that facilitate RT-QoS in environments that do not provide the level of control over interference that is traditionally required for real-time systems. This thesis presents a comprehensive review and analysis of existing QoS and RT-QoS techniques. The techniques are classified into seven categories and the most significant approaches are tested for their ability to provide QoS definitions that are not susceptible to dynamic changing levels of interference. This work then proposes a new n-dimensional framework that models the relationship between resource utilisation, resource availability on host servers, and the response-times of services. The framework is combined with real-time schedulability tests to dynamically provide guarantees on response-times for ranges of resource availabilities and identifies when those conditions are no longer suitable. The proposed framework is compared against the existing techniques using simulation and then evaluated in the domain of Cloud computing where the approach demonstrates an average overallocation of 12%, and provides alerts across 94% of QoS violations within the first 14% of execution progress.

It concludes by analyzing the system in production and proposing a new service oriented digital library architecture supported in a peer-to-peer infrastructure

O presente trabalho analisa as limitações dos actuais sistemas de gestão de bibliotecas digitais e as oportunidades criadas pelos mais recentes modelos de computação distribuída. Deste trabalho resultou a implementação do sistema integrado para bibliotecas e arquivos digitais da Universidade de Aveiro. Este trabalho finaliza debruçando-se sobre o sistema em produção e propondo uma nova arquitectura de biblioteca digital sustentada numa infrastrutura peer-to-peer e orientada a serviços.

This Master’s Thesis examines and documents challenges related to the flexible interchange of web services within a cross-cloud Service Oriented Computing scenario (SOC).Starting with a theoretical approach, hypotheses are defined and processed to create testing scenarios for a practical examination. Both examinations are used to identify possible challenges. Next, encountered challenges are described, discussed and classified. Lastly, solution approaches to identified challenges are presented. The solution approaches concern related topics, such as service standardization, semantic methods, heuristics, and security/trust mechanisms. Several approaches to different challenges are reviewed in this particular context, to present an overview for future research on the subject.It is remarkable that there will be more service standardization in the future, but to achieve full automation it will be, on the long run, necessary to evolve and adopt more sophisticated solution approaches such as semantic methods or heuristics.This work is embedded into the framework of a research co-operation between the Linnaeus University Växjö and the University of Applied Sciences Karlsruhe. Results however are also applicable to other research scenarios.

This paper shows that Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) systems can be developed at lower costs, less risk and with a faster time to market than a traditional developed IT system. The primary reason for this is that SOA enables reuse; by loosely coupled reusable services and business processes.

However, this is not the main benefit; still a great side effect. SOA can and should deliver good value for the business. The main benefit with SOA is therefore to create new and better opportunities for the business. Today’s rapid changes and fierce competition increases the importance of flexible enterprises; SOA has the ability to develop and modify services quickly which leads to flexible and thus winning enterprises.

It is important to keep in mind that SOA is an architecture, not a technology. Like any other architecture one finds value over time; long term thinking is important in the implementation of SOA.

This paper also covers a number of technologies common in SOA, and a prototype to show how these technologies can be implemented in a SOA system.

This thesis describes and validates the design of an optical switch that uses a vertically-integrated active/passive waveguide in an InP-based heterostructure. The goal was to design a monolithically integrated proof-of-concept 2x2 switch for use in a reconfigurable optical add-drop module (ROADM). The 1x2 building-block used for this switch consists of a passive 3dB power splitter with two semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) incorporated into each of the output arms. The major contributions are an integrated 3dB power splitter design derived from a validated general design procedure based on a reductionist approach, active waveguide modeling based on evanescent coupling to a weakly-confined SOA region for the switch function, and preliminary layout designs of 2x2 and 4x4 switch fabrics. The performance of the switch was determined through finite-element analysis using FEMLAB, based on material simulations performed using OptiHS, employing post-processing in MATLAB, and validated with beam-propagation analysis using OptiBPM.

Organizations with older legacy systems face a number of challenges, including obsolescent technologies, brittle software, integrating with modern applications, and rarity of properly skilled human resources. An increasingly common strategy for addressing such challenges is application modernization, which transforms legacy applications into (a) newer object-oriented programming languages, and (b) modern Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). Published approaches to legacy application modernization focus either on technology transformation or SOA transformation, but not both. Given that both types of transformation are desirable, it is valuable to explore how to combine existing approaches to perform both transformations types within a single project. This thesis proposes principles for combining such approaches, and demonstrates how these principles can be applied through an example of a combined approach along with a simulated application of this example. The results of this simulated application leave us with considerable confidence that both transformations can be successfully incorporated into a combined project.

The constant evolution of technologies used in mobile devices has increased its capabilities with respect to its storage, processing and transmission of data, including more of one kind of technology transfer in a single device, and also access Internet more efficiently. These factors have a greater number of applications and services may be provided therein. With this came the need to find a model for developing services and making them available more quickly and efficient, and that data is transmitted more securely. One of the best options currently existing are the SOAS (Services Oriented Architecture) a development model in great evidence today. The aim of this dissertation is present a framework that allows the development of SOA in the mobile environment, giving the developer all the tools necessary for provision of services in this type of environment. A tool for the use of security mechanism for the Framework is also proposed.
A constante evolução das tecnologias utilizadas em dispositivos móveis permitiu o aumento das suas capacidades no que diz respeito ao seu armazenamento, processamento e transmissão de dados, inclusive com mais de um tipo de tecnologia de transmissão em um mesmo dispositivo, e também do acesso a internet de forma mais eficiente. Estes fatores permitiram que um maior número de aplicações e serviços possam ser disponibilizados neles. Com isso surgiu a necessidade de se encontrar um modelo de desenvolvimento de serviços para os dispositivos móveis e sua disponibilização de forma mais rápida e eficiente, além de que os dados sejam transmitidos de forma segura. Uma das melhores opções existentes atualmente são os SOAs (Arquitetura Orientada a Serviços), um modelo de desenvolvimento em grande evidência atualmente. Esta dissertação visa apresentar um Framework que permite o desenvolvimento de SOA no ambiente móvel, dando ao desenvolvedor todas as ferramentas necessárias para provisão de serviços neste tipo de ambiente. Também é proposta uma ferramenta para o uso de mecanismo de segurança pelo Framework.

This thesis presents experimental investigations of the use of semiconductor optical amplifiers in a nonlinear loop mirror (SOA-NOLM) and its application in all-optical processing. The techniques used are mainly experimental and are divided into three major applications. Initially the semiconductor optical amplifier, SOA, is experimentally characterised and the optimum operating condition is identified. An interferometric switch based on a Sagnac loop with the SOA as the nonlinear element is employed to realise all-optical switching. All-optical switching is a very attractive alternative to optoelectronic conversion because it avoids the conversion from the optical to the electronic domain and back again. The first major investigation involves a carrier suppressed return to zero, CSRZ, format conversion and transmission. This study is divided into single channel and four channel WDM respectively. The optical bandwidth which limits the conversion is investigated. The improvement of the nonlinear tolerance in the CSRZ transmission is shown which shows the suitability of this format for enhancing system performance. Second, a symmetrical switching window is studied in the SOA-NOLM where two similar control pulses are injected into the SOA from opposite directions. The switching window is symmetric when these two control pulses have the same power and arrive at the same time in the SOA. Finally, I study an all-optical circulating shift register with an inverter. The detailed behaviour of the blocks of zeros and ones has been analysed in terms of their transient measurement. Good agreement with a simple model of the shift register is obtained. The transient can be reduced but it will affect the extinction ratio of the pulses.

In the first part of the work we are outlining the development of information systems architectures, after that describing SOA architecture, its basic concept, benefits and risks, ways of implementing and other connections. In the next part we are introducing the SAP company and its big historic moments from the beginning till present. We are analyzing the impact of SOA on SAP product and introducing new solutions -- architectural concept Enterprise SOA and application and integration, service-oriented platform SAP NetWeaver. We are discussing its development and its future. In the last part we are demonstrating practically these new solutions.

This thesis is focused on comparison of common standards used for service orchestration. Orchestration is one of main terms in service oriented architecture, which is a considerable trend in information systems development. This paper is divided into four main parts. The first chapter describes services as a part of current information systems. Definition of service oriented architecture is another subject, where service is a main component for system development and integration. Description of principles of service oriented architecture, that are describing its basis, is the last part of this chapter. The next chapter belongs to coordination of service cooperation, where we can find two basic approaches -- orchestration and choreography. The intention of this chapter is to create theoretical definition of both terms and to compare them. The third part is focused on orchestration methods standardization, where the main standard is BPEL. The history and reasons of creation are mentioned in the beginning, while next section concerns principles of BPEL. Following part describes the version of BPEL called BPEL4WS. Specification of its structure is a main primer for comparison with the latest version named WS-BPEL. The major changes are mentioned in this section. The last chapter is devoted to practical comparison of standards mentioned above. At first, there is created a sample process, based on real situation. The process contains the most important parts of BPEL language. Afterwards, the process is divided into parts, where each of them represents one activity. During description of these parts there is made the above mentioned comparison. The end of the practical part contains main conclusions that were found in this chapter.

A velocidade das mudanças e a necessidade de informações disponíveis em vários meios têm feito com que os sistemas atuais se integrem cada vez mais. Neste cenário, arquiteturas orientadas a serviços e Web Services ganham evidência. Por utilizarem padrões já bem difundidos, por exemplo XML (extended markup language), Web Services se destacam pela interoperabilidade e dinamismo, disponibilizados através da Internet e utilizado em ambientes heterogêneos. Contudo, isso afeta significativamente atributos não funcionais, por exemplo, confiabilidade, disponibilidade, entre outros. Para Web Services, além de todos os problemas existentes no paradigma de programação distribuída, temos ainda o problema de que erros em um determinado serviço não devem ser propagados para os demais. Dentre as diversas formas de se contornar o problema, existe a definição de padrões transacionais que visam delinear regras específicas para a comunicação entre os serviços. O objetivo do trabalho é identificar casos de testes que permitam validar a adequação, tanto do serviço quanto da aplicação de padrões definidos, de modo a garantir uma maior confiabilidade do sistema como um todo. Para isso, é avaliada a aplicabilidade de técnicas de perturbação e mutação de dados com relação ao padrão estabelecido. Como resultado, obtém-se um subconjunto das técnicas que possuem potencial de identificação de falhas nesse cenário.
Software technology has become essential since it is available in most places. Powered by Internet, nowadays, information quickly flows throw systems. Web Services provide a standard way to meet these objectives, as they use common communication pattern like XML and HTTP. The use of Web Services brings many benefits. On the other hand, it also brings some issues about reliability, availability and other non functional problems. Transactional patterns are an alternative to outline such problems. This study aims to find an effective way to certificate the correct use of those patterns by applying perturbation and mutation testing techniques. As work result, it is expected to determine which of techniques are applicable.

Em Arquiteturas Abertas e Orientadas a Serviços (Service Oriented Architectures - SOA) a preocupação com a área de segurança tem recebido importante atenção no desenho das aplicações em função das vulnerabilidades intrínsecas associadas a este novo paradigma. Este trabalho tem por objetivo propor um arcabouço para o desenvolvimento seguro de aplicações em SOA, com foco nos aspectos de segurança através da validação dos consumidores de serviços e seus dispositivos de acesso. Para este objetivo, foi conduzido um estudo sobre as abordagens tradicionais para a segurança em soluções Web uma vez que esta é a plataforma predominante na implementação de soluções SOA. Neste estudo, foi identificado que uma área fértil para contribuição à segurança em soluções SOA é o atestamento dos componentes ou programas consumidores de serviços. Por atestamento, deve-se entender um processo de verificação da legitimidade dos participantes (indivíduos, hardware e software) de uma cadeia de acesso. Como resultado deste trabalho, foi proposto um arcabouço, denominado ASACS (Arcabouço para Segurança por Atestamento dos Consumidores de Serviços), para controle de acesso aos serviços baseado na validação de etapas de atestamento dos consumidores. Estas etapas vão desde o fornecimento de informações sobre a plataforma de execução dos consumidores até a análise comportamental para definir o grau de confiança de cada consumidor em uma rede distribuída de serviços. A utilização do arcabouço traz um importante reforço à segurança ao buscar a negação de acesso a consumidores mal intencionados, não legítimos ou que tenham sido alvo de ataque. Como principal contribuição, este arcabouço orienta uma abordagem estruturada para a validação de legitimidade dos consumidores e de seus dispositivos e programas de acesso, resultando na necessidade de um aumento dos esforços requeridos para um ataque na tentativa de violar a segurança dos serviços oferecidos.
In Service Oriented Architectures (SOA) the concern with security has received important focus on solution design as a consequence of intrinsic vulnerabilities at the basis of this new paradigm. This work proposes a framework to secure development of SOA applications, with a special attention to security matters regarding validation of service consumers and its access means. In order to accomplish this goal, it was conducted a research over traditional approaches for security in Web applications, considering that Web platform is definitely dominant for SOA implementation. In this research, validation of service consumers was figured out as a promising area to security enforcement. Validation of service consumers states for a process to verify legitimacy of participants (individuals, hardware and software) in an access chain. As result of this work, it was proposed the framework ASACS designed to control accesses to service providers based on consumers legitimacy validation stages. Such validation stages cover since a check of client stations boot stack layers until a behavioral monitoring to graduate trust levels for each consumer in a network of distributed services. The framework adoption promotes security enforcement while avoiding access from malicious consumers, non legitimate ones or genuine consumers compromised by an attacker. As principal contribution, this framework guides to a structured approach to validate legitimacy of consumers and its programs and access means, requiring higher levels of efforts to an attack attempting violate the security of published services.

Pour faire face aux contraintes économiques, le développement de stratégies « au plus juste » (lean manufacturing) impose à la fois un recentrage métier, la mise en place de logistique de production « agile » et l’organisation de collaborations inter-entreprises. Ces collaborations conduisent à l’émergence d’entreprises virtuelles et font largement appel aux technologies de l’information et de la communication. Or les réponses technologiques apportées peuvent constituer un frein, les Systèmes d’Information (SI) d’entreprise ne sont que peu agiles. Et manquent de capacité d’interopérabilité. En effet, l’infrastructure informatique (matérielle et logicielle, i. E. ERP, CRM, CAD, SCM, MES…) présente une forte complexité technologique, manque d’interopérabilité et limite donc les possibilités « d’interconnexion » entre les processus d’entreprise et l’échange d’information entre partenaires. Pour surmonter ces limites, l’implémentation du système d’information selon une architecture orientée services (SOA) définit une nouvelle approche pour organiser les applications d'entreprise et optimiser les processus métier. Néanmoins, ces infrastructures sont essentiellement destinées à soutenir l'interopérabilité intra-entreprise car elles reposent sur une définition mono-contexte du processus d'affaires. Or un écosystème de services inclut un environnement multi-contextuel d’exécution de services. Pour surmonter ces limites dans notre travail de recherche, nous proposons d’intégrer une architecture supportant différents contextes d’exécution pour favoriser le déploiement de systèmes d’information interopérables au sein de l’entreprise et donc faciliter la collaboration des processus inter-entreprises. Pour cela, nous proposons d’utiliser une architecture de collaboration à base d’hypergraphe. Afin de propager efficacement le contexte, nous proposons de définir des règles de propagation des mécanismes d’héritage issus de l’approche objet pour assurer une contextualisation des services à la demande. Pour cela, notre modèle est basé sur trois concepts : le service, le répertoire et le processus de collaboration (processus commun) qui est défini par différents vues (gestion, sécurité et médiation). To face the economic constraints, the development of just in time strategies (lean manufacturing) requires the organization of collaborations between enterprises. These collaborations lead to the emergence of virtual enterprise and needs the communication and information technologies. However the technological answers can constitute a brake as the enterprise Information systems (IS) lack of agility. Indeed, the infrastructure (hardware and software, ie ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), CRM(Customer Relationship Management), MES (Manufacturing Execution System). . . ) has a high technological complexity, lack of interoperability and therefore limits the potential interconnection between business processes and exchange of information between partners. To overcome these limits, the implementation of the information system according to an orientated architecture services (SOA) defines a new approach to organize the applications of enterprise and to optimize the business processes. Nevertheless, these infrastructures are primarily proposed to support the interoperability inter-enterprise because they rely on a mono-context definition of the business process. However an ecosystem of services includes a multi-contextual environment of execution of services. To overcome these limits, we propose to integrate an architecture supporting various contexts of execution to support the deployment of information systems interoperable within the enterprise and improving interenterprise collaborative processes enactment. Based on an hypergraph organisation, our architecture includes context propagation rules and extends the inheritance mechanisms from the object oriented approach to allow a simple service contextualisation. Our model is based on three concepts: service, repository and collaborative process (associated to the common process). Different views (management, mediation, security) are used to support a simple contextual service composition

Service-oriented architecture enables web services to operate in a loosely-coupled setting and provides an environment for dynamic discovery and use of services over a network using standards such as WSDL, SOAP, and UDDI. Web service has both functional and non-functional characteristics. This thesis work proposes to add QoS descriptions (non-functional properties) to WSDL and compose various services to form a business process. This composition of web services also considers QoS properties along with functional properties and the composed services can again be published as a new Web Service and can be part of any other composition using Composed WSDL.

The antivirus system and firewall are protection systems designed to prevent malicious work in the network, thus constituting a barrier to invaders (e.g. vírus, worms e hackers). However, there is no guarantee a full protection to network and computers, invasions can occur by exploiting vulnerabilities, known, and allow running programs remotely, changing privileges within the system and the dissemination of important information. In this case, Intrusion Detection System IDS (Intrusion Detection System) allows the detection of intrusions and subsequent notification to the network administrator or, in conjunction with the firewall blocks the port used in the invasion or the IP address of the attacker. An important factor for the intrusion detection is the quality of subscriber base. However IDS systems are isolated systems and the interoperability among different vendors IDS is complex and difficult to implement. Existing IDS systems in the literature, including the IDS NIDIA (Instrusion-Detection System Network Intrusion Detection System based on Intelligent Agents) are isolated systems, are not easily reused. Generally, they communicate using different protocols and are designed with different programming paradigms. In this work it is proposed an architecture based on the philosophy SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) to support interoperability between IDS systems. The IDS-NIDIA will be adapted and extended according to the SOA philosophy, containing layers of web services in order to provide a static service composition between the layers of the application and reuse of information with other IDS s.
Os sistemas antivírus e firewall são sistemas de proteção que visam impedir a execução de ações maléficas na rede, constituindo, portanto, uma barreira aos invasores (e.g.vírus, worms e hackers). Entretanto, não há como garantir uma proteção total da rede e dos computadores, podendo ocorrer invasões através da exploração de vulnerabilidades, já conhecidas, que permitem a execução de programas remotamente, a alteração de privilégios dentro do sistema e a divulgação de informações importantes. Neste caso, o Sistema de Detecção de Intrusão-IDS(Intrusion Detection System) permite a detecção de intrusões e a consequente notificação ao administrador da rede ou, em conjunto com o firewall, bloqueia a porta utilizada na invasão ou o endereço IP do atacante. Um fator importante para a detecção de intrusões é a qualidade da base de assinaturas. Entretanto os sistemas IDS são sistemas isolados e a interoperabilidade entre IDS de fornecedores diferentes é complexa e de difícil implementação. Os sistemas IDS existentes na literatura, incluindo o IDS-NIDIA (Instrusion Detection System- Network Intrusion Detection System based on Intelligent Agents), são sistemas isolados, não são facilmente reutilizados. Geralmente, estes se comunicam utilizando diferentes protocolos e são criados com paradigmas de programação diferentes. É proposta uma arquitetura baseado na filosofia SOA (Service Oriented Architecture ) para suportar a interoperabilidade entre sistemas IDS. O sistema IDS-NIDIA será adaptado e estendido de acordo com esta filosofia SOA, contendo camadas de serviços web com o propósito de oferecer uma composição de serviço estática entre as camadas de aplicação e o reuso de informações com outros IDS s.

Today’s competitive business environment forces companies to introduce new product and process innovations at an increasing pace. Almost every aspect of the modern business is supported by information technology systems which, consequently, must evolve at the same pace as the business. A company’s strategic view on IT reflects the strategic importance of IT in the organization, both in terms of the opportunities IT is expected to create and the commitment to IT the business organization is willing to make.

SOA is an emerging concept which aims to structure IT in a more flexible manner. The basic idea is to encapsulate distinct units of business logic in reusable services, which can be combined to support business processes. The term service granularity refers to the amount of logic contained in a service. Even though there is immense hype around SOA today, the concept of service granularity is still relatively unexplored. The service should be coarse grained enough to be reusable, but at the same time specific enough to fit the process. Most SOA literature avoids the subject as being too implementation specific and seldom makes any attempt to concretize the rather abstract term.

The research was conducted at Handelsbanken, which for years has worked with service-oriented principles. The researchers have been given the opportunity to closely analyze the bank’s service initiative. In order to gain an understanding beyond merely technical aspects a rich case study was built, based on interviews with professionals at all levels of the organization.

The research objective was divided in three parts. The first part was to factorize the notion of service granularity, or in other words to find a number of factors which together precisely describe the granularity of a service. The second part was to explicate how the factors are interrelated, i.e. how changing one factor will affect the others. The final part of the objective was to explain how an organization’s strategic view on IT affects the optimal service granularity.

It was found that an organization’s strategic view on IT affects the amount of complexity the organization is able to handle, limiting the optimal SOA granularity, which can be precisely described using three factors: reach, range and realm. Reach defines the locations and people the service is capable of connecting, range defines how much functionality the service offers, and realm defines what kind of functionality the service offers.

In this thesis, a service oriented decomposition approach: Use case Driven Service Oriented Architecture (UDSOA), is introduced to close the gap between business requirements and SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) design by including business use cases and system use cases into decomposition process. The approach is constructed upon Service Oriented Software Engineering (SOSE) modeling technique and aims to fill the deficits of it at the decomposition phase. Further, it aims to involve both business vision and Information Technologies concerns in the decomposition process. This approach starts with functional top-down decomposition of the domain. Then, business use cases are used for further decomposition because of their high-level view. This connects the business requirements and our SOA design. Also it raises the level of abstraction which allows us to focus on business services. Second step of the SOA approach uses system use cases to continue decomposition. System use cases help discovering technical web services and allocating them on the decomposition tree. Service oriented analysis also helps separating business and technical services in tightly coupled architecture conditions. Those two steps together bring quality in to both problem and solution domains.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is rapidly becoming the new standard for today’s enterprise. SOA can enable great agility, productivity and cost savings, but not if it is implemented with complex, closed and expensive enterprise platforms. The best way is to implement it in Simpler, Open and Affordable manner. The main purpose of this thesis is to identify some of the core characteristics of SOA and explain how they are manifested in actual technologies that can be used in a cost effective way in an enterprise. Collectively these technologies will combine to form what we are calling the Open SOA Platform. Once these technologies are identified then our main goal will be to find open source products that can be used to satisfy these technology requirements. We are going to analyse and decide the solution areas for example; Integration, e-Business that we can use Open Source products in and also the functions blocks for example ESB, Registry, and SOA Governance management, within the decided Solution areas that could be implemented by Open Source products. We will also define the Technical Reference Architecture (TRA) for the SOA (EAI and ESB) and Portal. The implementation of the TRA done by the Microsoft and Red Hat will be compared and the best option will be selected on the basis of different criterion. If we can prove that the usage of Open Source products and SOA within any particularly organization is possible which means there are big savings, and if the savings are much more than today’s IT costs, migration cost and other costs related to IT, then we maybe have decision basis for next generation of standard product(s) in some solution areas in the IT landscape. The last part of the thesis is to analyse the impact of using Open Source products in Vattenfall Business Services Nordic AB, and what kind of competence we need. Other IT-suppliers in Vattenfall can use the Master Thesis as a template to calculate the implementation of the decided functions blocks in their IT landscape.

The introduction of Web Services as a platform upon which applications can communicate has contributed a great deal towards the expansion of World Wide Web technologies. The Internet and computing technologies have been some of the factors that have contributed to the socio-economic improvement of urban and industrial areas. This research focuses on the application of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web Services technologies in Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D) contexts. SOA is a style used to design distributed systems, and Web Services are some of the common realizations of the SOA. Web Services allow the exchange of data between two or more machines in a simple and standardized manner over the network. This has resulted in the augmentation of ways in which individuals in a society and in the world communicate. This research aims to develop a SOA-based system with services that are implemented as Web Services. The system is intended to support communication activities of Dwesa community members. The communication methods identified as the most commonly used in the Dwesa community are Short Message Services (SMSs) and voice calls. In this research we have identified further methods (i.e. Multimedia Message Service, Electronic mail and Instant Messaging) to augment communication activities in Dwesa. The developed system, therefore, exposes SMS Web Service, MMS Web Service, Email Web Service and IM Web Service that are consumed in machine-to-machine, machine-to-person and person-to-person types of communication. We have also implemented a one-stop communication shop, through a web portal which provides interfaces to the different communication modules. Elaborate functional and usability testing have also been undertaken to establish the viability and end-user acceptance of the system respectively. This research has provided the initial validation of the effectiveness of the SOA-based system in ICT4D contexts

SOA-based systems o er high degree of exibility and interoperabil- ity. However, the securing of SOA-based applications is still a challenge. Although some related techniques have been proposed and presented in academia and industry, it is still dicult to check SOA quality in security aspect from an architecture view. In this thesis project, a method for security analysis in SOA is intro- duced and investigated. The method intends to be used for analyzing security of SOA-based systems on architecture level. To demonstrate the method, a prototype supporting the method is introduced and imple- mented. And the method and prototype are also evaluated respectively based on Technology Acceptance Model. The evaluation result shows that the prototype supporting the method is a promising inspection tool to detect software vulnerability.

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an architectural paradigm that allows building of infrastructures for diverse application interaction and integration via services across different platforms, domains of technology and locations. SOA differs from traditional architectures, as it focuses on integrating capabilities that are distributed and implemented using a mixture of technologies. SOA provides a set of methodologies and strategies to accomplish interoperability and integration among different technology stacks.   Vattenfall is the fifth the largest energy supplier within Europe. Having operational systems in different countries brings the challenge of integrating all these distributed systems and this integration is a vital requirement for Vattenfall. The company is currently using Microsoft proprietary products to achieve integration across different technological platform, but requires a better integration infrastructure which is easily extensible and cost effective.   This thesis investigates the impact of implementing Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) using open source or proprietary software products within Vattenfall, from technological and financial perspectives. For this purpose, different technical and non-technical function blocks are identified which are essential for the implementation of SOA. These function blocks are mapped with SOA solutions provided by Red Hat’s JBoss Open Source SOA Platform and Microsoft’s SOA Platform. After mapping, a vendor specific technical and non-technical comparative analysis is carried out based on the function blocks, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each vendor.   Finally, an evaluation scheme is purposed based on the technical comparative analysis of vendors, SOA solution cost and SOA competence required. The results from this evaluation scheme are used to recommend the best solution vendor for Vattenfall Nordic. Moreover, this evaluation scheme can also be used to facilitate management in arriving at an appropriate decision about implementation of SOA, while remaining within their requirements and constraints.
