Streszczenie:
Since dynamic graph data continuously change over time, it is necessary to manage historical data for accessing a snapshot graph at a specific time. In this paper, we propose a new historical graph management scheme that consists of an intersection snapshot and a delta snapshot to enhance storage utilization and historical graph accessibility. The proposed scheme constantly detects graph changes and calculates a common subgraph ratio between historical graphs over time. If the common subgraph ratio is lower than a threshold value, the intersection snapshot stores the common subgraphs within a time interval. A delta snapshot stores the subgraphs that are not contained in the intersection snapshot. Several delta snapshots are connected to the intersection snapshot to maintain the modified subgraph over time. The efficiency of storage space is improved by managing common subgraphs stored in the intersection snapshot. Furthermore, the intersection and delta snapshots can be connected to search a graph at a specific time. We show the superiority of the proposed scheme through various performance evaluations.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to determine the impact of corporate brand equity and corporate brand credibility on customer’s intention to donate the charity program. To understand the complex relationship, this study points out the moderating effect of the materialistic attitude. Design/methodology/approach The empirical study involved a survey of young customers in Indonesia telecommunication industry. The data collection involved face-to-face interviews among 409 respondents in Jakarta Indonesia between December 2015 and January 2016. Findings This study indicates a positive impact of corporate brand equity and brand credibility on their customers’ intention to support the social charity. However, materialistic attitude slightly changes the impact direction of corporate brand on the customers’ intention to participate. Research limitations/implications This research relies on a cross-sectional observation, which was one snapshoot observation in specific time. Second, this study uses interview to help the respondents understand the questionnaires; this may imply on the level of objectiveness of respondents. Practical/implications This paper extends the discussion on the altruism theory and corporate brands by establishing a critical linkage between materialistic attitude, corporate brand credibility and consumers’ intention to charity. Under high materialistic attitude, corporations are encouraged to promote strong business ethics. Originality/value This study makes a contribution to the deepening understanding on altruism theory and conscious corporate responsibility through raising a concern on marketing practices, which entails a potential fraud from charity ethics.

Streszczenie:
Cycle-to-cycle variations (CCV) in spark-ignited (SI) engines impose performance limitations and in the extreme limit can lead to very strong, potentially damaging cycles. Thus, CCV force sub-optimal engine operating conditions. A deeper understanding of CCV is key to enabling control strategies, improving engine design and reducing the negative impact of CCV on engine operation. This paper presents a new simulation strategy which allows investigation of the impact of individual physical quantities (e.g., flow field or turbulence quantities) on CCV separately. As a first step, multi-cycle unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (uRANS) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of a spark-ignited natural gas engine are performed. For each cycle, simulation results just prior to each spark timing are taken. Next, simulation results from different cycles are combined: one quantity, e.g., the flow field, is extracted from a snapshot of one given cycle, and all other quantities are taken from a snapshot from a different cycle. Such a combination yields a new snapshot. With the combined snapshot, the simulation is continued until the end of combustion. The results obtained with combined snapshots show that the velocity field seems to have the highest impact on CCV. Turbulence intensity, quantified by the turbulent kinetic energy and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate, has a similar value for all snapshots. Thus, their impact on CCV is small compared to the flow field. This novel methodology is very flexible and allows investigation of the sources of CCV which have been difficult to investigate in the past.

AbstractThis study examined past, current, and projected landscape configuration (LC) impacts on streamflow within a 3,553 square kilometer (km2) Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC)-8 Rocky River (RR) watershed of the Charlotte, North Carolina metropolitan region (CMR). Utilizing a monthly model, Thornthwaite Water Balance (TWB) simulations incorporating LC (blended contagion (CON)-adjusted curve numbers (CNs)) derived from two previous (2001, 2006) and one current (2011) US scale land cover/land use (LC/LU) time snapshots outperformed a blended original (ORG) CN watershed model during the 15-year (180-month) period from January 1999 to December 2013. Findings were confirmed using evaluations from several statistically based, hydrologic model performance predictors. Five-year comparisons of the 2001 time snapshot with the 2006 time snapshot and 2011 time snapshot indicated the least underestimation/overestimation of measured streamflow occurred during the 2001 time snapshot. This period had the highest measured runoff and points towards LC influences on streamflow simulation being potentially more quantifiable during periods of greater watershed precipitation. Watershed LC/LU and climatic data were also projected to the 2030 time snapshot under five different scenarios. Streamflow was projected to be about 2.6% higher in volume than what was estimated for the current (2011) time snapshot using a blended CON-adjusted TWB model.

Streszczenie:
Abstract. In array signal processing, direction of arrival (DOA) estimation has been studied for decades. Many algorithms have been proposed and their performance has been studied thoroughly. Yet, most of these works are focused on the asymptotic case of a large number of snapshots. In automotive radar applications like driver assistance systems, however, only a small number of snapshots of the radar sensor array or, in the worst case, a single snapshot is available for DOA estimation. In this paper, we investigate and compare different DOA estimators with respect to their single snapshot performance. The main focus is on the estimation accuracy and the angular resolution in multi-target scenarios including difficult situations like correlated targets and large target power differences. We will show that some algorithms lose their ability to resolve targets or do not work properly at all. Other sophisticated algorithms do not show a superior performance as expected. It turns out that the deterministic maximum likelihood estimator is a good choice under these hard conditions.

This practice-based project explores the photographic phenomenon of ‘moment beyond moment’, which refers to the combined representations of an existing image in an environment, together with the real-life situation at the moment the photograph is taken. I call this photograph an ‘extended photograph’. Employing practical works of extended photographs and focusing on interactions between the moment in real-life and the moment in an existing image, the research explores the transformation of meanings caused by the interactions of these moments in an extended photograph. The research owes its approach to grounded theory, contrary thinking and Chinese Buddhist ‘Sudden Enlightenment’ to further its aim of exploring the unpredictable interaction of these moments, and to disclose the potentials of meaning transformation. My research outcome intends to initiate a discourse with photographic practitioners and theorists on the phenomenon of moment beyond moment in a working environment that is encaged by the excessive existence of displayed images. The thesis is composed as a creative work that consists of a series of photographic images accompanied by an exegesis component. The images represent a nominal 80%, and the exegesis 20% of the final submission.

Streszczenie:
Channeled spectropolarimetry is a novel method of measuring the spectral dependence of the polarization state of light. Amplitude modulation is employed to encode all four Stokes component spectra into a single optical power spectrum. The encoding is performed with a simple arrangement of two thick birefringent retarders and a linear analyzer. No moving parts are required, and the system is able to acquire its data in a single detector array integration time. We report the results of an in-depth study of channeled spectropolarimetry. The mathematics of the amplitude modulation analogy are explored, providing a basic design procedure. The system's spectral resolution is described in terms of the space bandwidth product. The technique is then analyzed in the general context of linear operator theory, using both analytic and computational approaches to the singular value decomposition and pseudoinversion of the system's operator. This analysis highlights the importance of the choice of object space in constraining linear reconstructions of data from under-determined systems, and provides the underpinnings of the calibration and reconstruction techniques for a hardware prototype. Calibration of the prototype is approached as experimental estimation of the system's operator. Our basic method of reconstruction involves pseudoinversion of the operator while constraining object space to a truncated Fourier basis. Apodization is helpful in reducing the ringing of reconstructions of spectra which extend beyond the edges of the system's spectral range. Experimental results are presented, including comparisons between measurements taken with the channeled spectropolarimeter and a reference rotating compensator, fixed analyzer instrument. We have used measurements of the effects of stress birefringence on light propagated through material subject to time-varying stress to demonstrate time-resolved snapshot spectropolarimetry. Continuing efforts include the combination of channeled spectropolarimetry with computed tomography imaging spectrometry to realize a snapshot imaging spectropolarimeter.

Streszczenie:
The research for this dissertation project began with the goal to construct a snapshot imaging spectropolarimeter forthe visible spectrum. The instrument integrates a channeled spectropolarimeter (CHSP) into a computed tomographicimaging spectrometer (CTIS), the result being an instrument that measures the complete spatially- andspectrally-resolved Stokes vectors of a scene. It is not the first of its kind, since a similar instrument has beenbuilt before for use in the short-wave infrared. However, that instrument encountered severe difficulties due tolimitations of available hardware. Visible spectrum work generally enjoys the best instrumentation available, providingan ideal place to attempt a proof-of-concept demonstration. The main body of the research is focused on finding ways to improve the CTIS measurement technique, especially in waysallowing it to integrate with channeled spectropolarimetry. The first effort is a careful analysis and reworking of thecalibration procedure for the instrument, followed by a survey and comparison of ideas for alternative CTIS designs. The second effort makes use of the new calibration approach to develop an alternative way of thinking about CTISreconstructions based on the geometry and physics of the instrument rather than on abstract matrix mathematics. Thisopens up ways to improve their accuracy and to achieve reconstructions at a much higher speed.Experimental results from the instrument illustrate the improvements obtained from using the new methods, showing itscurrent capabilities and limitations.

Algorithms used in distributed systems for synchronization can often be hard to understand, and especially for beginners these concepts can be difficult to apprehend. Seeing an animation of these concepts could help to gain insight about how they work. The Snapshot algorithm (Chandy-Lamport) is one of these. But what is a good animation of an algorithm? What characteristics do an animation need to be considered as good? This thesis describes an analysis of those characteristics and a development of an animation software for the Snapshot algorithm using a game engine written in Erlang.

Streszczenie:
PhD
Many popular database management systems implement a multiversion concurrency control algorithm called snapshot isolation rather than providing full serializability based on locking. There are well-known anomalies permitted by snapshot isolation that can lead to violations of data consistency by interleaving transactions that would maintain consistency if run serially. Until now, the only way to prevent these anomalies was to modify the applications by introducing explicit locking or artificial update conflicts, following careful analysis of conflicts between all pairs of transactions. This thesis describes a modification to the concurrency control algorithm of a database management system that automatically detects and prevents snapshot isolation anomalies at runtime for arbitrary applications, thus providing serializable isolation. The new algorithm preserves the properties that make snapshot isolation attractive, including that readers do not block writers and vice versa. An implementation of the algorithm in a relational database management system is described, along with a benchmark and performance study, showing that the throughput approaches that of snapshot isolation in most cases.

Streszczenie:
A practical, field-capable, 3.0 to 5.0 μm mid-wave infrared Computed-Tomography Imaging Spectrometer (CTIS) has been demonstrated. The CTIS employs a simple optical system in order to measure the object cube without any scanning . The data is not measured directly, but in a manner which requires complicated post-processing to extract an estimate of the object's spectral radiance. The advantage of a snapshot imaging spectrometer is that it can collect information about a dynamic event which a standard scanning spectrometer could either miss or corrupt with temporal artifacts. Results were presented for reconstructions of laboratory targets with sampling up to 46 x 46 x 21 voxels over a variable field-of-view, or 0.1 μm spectral sampling. Demonstration of the snapshot capability has been performed on both static targets and targets with rapidly varying content. The contents of this dissertation are directed towards two ends. The primary undertaking is a realization of the theoretical model of the CTIS is a practical, field-capable MWIR instrument. The design, calibration, and operation of the MWIR CTIS are explained in detail in the text and appendices. Of additional interest is the advancement of the theory to improve the design and functionality of the spectrometer. A new algorithm for design of the holographic disperser component of the CTIS is introduced. The design process dramatically extends the set of possibilities for the disperser. In order to improve the reconstruction potential of the spectrometer, the analytic expressions which describe the CTIS have been expanded into a principal component basis set. The result is a technique for creating an initial estimate of the object and a technique for improving the reconstruction algorithm.

Streszczenie:
The goal of this dissertation research is to develop and demonstrate a functioning snapshot imaging spectropolarimeter for the long wavelength infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum (wavelengths from 8-12 microns). Such an optical system will be able to simultaneously measure both the spectral and polarimetric signatures of all the spatial locations/targets in a scene with just a single integration period of a camera. This will be accomplished by combining the use of computed tomographic imaging spectrometry (CTIS) and channeled spectropolarimetry. The proposed system will be the first instrument of this type specifically designed to operate in the long wavelength infrared region, as well as being the first demonstration of such a system using an uncooled infrared focal plane array. In addition to the design and construction of the proof-of-concept snapshot imaging spectropolarimeter LWIR system, the dissertation research will also focus on a variety of methods on improving CTIS system performance. These enhancements will include some newly proposed methods of system design, calibration, and reconstruction aimed at improving the speed of reconstructions allowing for the first demonstration of a CTIS system capable of computing reconstructions in 'real time.'

Streszczenie:
The recent demonstration of a novel snapshot imaging polarimeter using the fringe modulation technique shows a promise in building a compact and moving-parts-free device. As just demonstrated in principle, this technique has not been adequately studied. In the effort of advancing this technique, we build a complete theory framework that can address the key issues regarding the polarization aberrations caused by using the functional elements. With this model, we can have the necessary knowledge in designing, analyzing and optimizing the systems. Also, we propose a broader technique that uses arbitrary modulation instead of sinusoidal fringes, which can give us more engineering freedom and can be the solution of achromatizing the system. In the hardware aspect, several important progresses are made. We extend the polarimeter technique from visible to middle wavelength infrared by using the yttrium vanadate crystals. Also, we incorporate a Savart Plate polarimter into a fundus camera to measure the human eye's retinal retardance, useful information for glaucoma diagnosis. Thirdly, a world-smallest imaging polarimeter is proposed and demonstrated, which may open many applications in security, remote sensing and bioscience.

Multispectral cameras sample the visible and/or the infrared spectrum according to narrow spectral bands. Available technologies include snapshot multispectral cameras equipped with filter arrays that acquire raw images at video rate. Raw images require a demosaicing procedure to estimate a multispectral image with full spatio-spectral definition. In this manuscript we review multispectral demosaicing methods and propose a new one based on the pseudo-panchromatic image. We highlight the influence of illumination on demosaicing performances, then we propose pre- and post-processing normalization steps that make demosaicing robust to acquisition properties. Experimental results show that our method provides estimated images of better objective quality than classical ones.Multispectral images can be used for texture classification. To perform texture analysis, we extend local binary pattern operators to multispectral texture images at the expense of increased memory and computation requirements. We propose to compute texture descriptors directly from raw images, which both avoids the demosaicing step and reduces the descriptor size. In order to assess classification on multispectral images we have proposed the first significant multispectral database of close-range textures in the visible and near infrared spectral domains. Extensive experiments on this database show that the proposed descriptor has both reduced computational cost and high discriminating power with regard to classical local binary pattern descriptors applied to demosaiced images

Streszczenie:
Roles of nodes in a social network (SN) represent their functions, responsibilities or behaviors within the SN. Roles typically evolve over time, making role analytics a challenging problem. Previous studies either neglect role transition analysis or perform role discovery and role transition learning separately, leading to inefficiencies and limited transition analysis. We propose a novel dynamic non-negative matrix factorization (DyNMF) approach to simultaneously discover roles and learn role transitions. DyNMF explicitly models temporal information by introducing a role transition matrix and clusters nodes in SNs from two views: the current view and the historical view. The current view captures structural information from the current SN snapshot and the historical view captures role transitions by looking at roles in past SN snapshots. DyNMF efficiently provides more effective analytics capabilities, regularizing roles by temporal smoothness of role transitions and reducing uncertainties and inconsistencies between snapshots. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world SNs demonstrate the advantages of DyNMF in discovering and predicting roles and role transitions.

Streszczenie:
Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) offers an approach to quantify cycle-to-cycle variation (CCV) of the flow field inside the internal combustion engine cylinder. POD decomposes instantaneous flow fields (also called snapshots) into a series of orthonormal flow patterns (called POD modes) and the corresponding mode coefficients. The POD modes are rank-ordered by decreasing kinetic energy content, and the low-order, high-energy modes are interpreted as constituting the large-scale coherent flow structure that varies from engine cycle to engine cycle. Various POD-based analysis techniques have thus been proposed to characterize engine flow field CCV using these low-order modes. The validity of such POD-based analyses rests, as a matter of course, on the reliability of the underlying POD results (modes and coefficients). Yet a POD mode can be disproportionately skewed by a single outlier snapshot within a large data set, and an algorithm exists to define and identify such outliers. In this paper, the effects of a candidate outlier snapshot on the results of POD-based conditional averaging and quadruple POD analyses are examined for two sets of crank angle-resolved flow fields on the mid-tumble plane of an optical engine cylinder recorded by high-speed particle image velocimetry. The results with and without the candidate outlier are compared and contrasted. In the case of POD-based conditional averaging, the presence of the outlier scrambles the composition of snapshot subsets that define large-scale flow pattern variations, and thus substantially alters the coherent flow structures that are identified; for quadruple POD, the shape of coherent structures as well as the number of modes to define them are not significantly affected by the outlier.

Streszczenie:
Reports on damages of ships, cargo and structures during heavy seas have been increasing within the last years. The impact of single extreme waves or wave groups on marine structures and ships causes enormous forces often leading to critical situations or even loss of crew, ship and cargo. Dangerous situations can be predicted by a forecast of encountering wave trains and the identification of critical wave groups. The paper presents a method to calculate the wave train a ship will encounter from surface elevation snapshots of the surrounding sea, taken by the ship radar. The time-dependent surface elevation snapshot far ahead of the ship is transferred into frequency domain by the use of Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT). The resulting complex Fourier spectrum given over the inverse wave length 1/L is converted into an amplitude spectrum and a phase spectrum. By shifting the phase spectrum to the position of the cruising ship the encountering waves can in turn be calculated in advance — depending on speed. The permanent processing of incoming snapshots delivers a continuous prediction of the water surface elevation at the position of the cruising ship. Based on these data the expected ship motion behaviour can be calculated continuously in time domain. In addition the response spectra, resulting from the wave spectrum and the relevant RAOs, are also evaluated. As wave data far ahead of the ship are used, it allows a forward glance, and dangerous situations, particularly resonance and parametric resonance are detectable before the ship is encountering this wave train. Consequently, the procedure can be used by the master as an assistance support system.

Streszczenie:
Snapshot Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) has been applied to reveal the dominant flow structures of an impinging jet flow field. PIV datasets of 200 snapshots were used for the POD analysis. The planar PIV measurements covered the free jet, stagnation and wall jet regions. The jet issued from a long pipe, 112 diameter, D, which ensured fully developed turbulent flow conditions at the outlet. The Reynolds number based on jet mean exit velocity was 16,000 and the pipe-to-plate separation, H, varied between 1D and 8D. The five most energetic modes were identified and found to contain 19–32% of the total turbulent energy. The energetic low modes were most pronounced for H/D = 8. The spatial topology was investigated by using velocity and vorticity fields of the mean flow and first five POD modes. For H/D = 8, the dominant flow structures were vortex tubes along the periphery of the jet. However, for H/D = 1, vortices along the impingement wall, outside of the stagnation region, were most prominent. The formation of vortices and their interaction with the impingement wall enhances local momentum transfer rates and could explain the secondary Nusselt number peak observed only at low separation distances.
