The dynamics of a milling process can significantly influence the surface quality and integrity of the finished part. Accordingly, various researchers have investigated the dynamics of milling processes using a hierarchy of models. Tlusty and Smith (1991) provides a review of these models. In recent years, several other researchers (e.g., Armarego and Deshpande, 1989; Montgomery and Altintas, 1991; Nallakatla and Smith, 1992) have also continued to enhance various aspects of such dynamic models. While these dynamic models provide significant insights into the cutting characteristics of a milling process, their utilization in process design has proven to be elusive. The accuracy of these models, however, depends significantly on the prediction of cutting force characteristics. Under the current state-of-the-art, detailed experimentations using actual set-up are necessary to make such predictions accurately. Experimentally obtained constants can vary widely from one milling situation to another, which in turn, significantly restricts their usefulness as predictive tools for process design.

Externalities are a fundamental aspect of any modern interdependent economy. The fact that agents interact with one another makes it inevitable that their decisions will influence one another directly, in addition to any indirect impact that may occur through the market place. Ever since the earliest stages of the discipline, externalities have been of prime concern to economists, who have long argued that they provide an important motive for (economic) decision making. To cite one prominent example, in The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith notes that “Though it is in order to supply the necessities and conveniences of the body that the advantages of external fortune are originally recommended to us, yet we cannot live long in the world without perceiving that the respect of our equals, our credit and rank in the society we live in, depend very much upon the degree in which we possess, or are supposed to possess those advantages. The desire of becoming the proper objects of this respect . . . is perhaps the strongest of all our desires” [Smith (1759, pp. 348–349)]. In modern terminology, Adam Smith is referring to a consumption externality.

This article discusses these reforms from the perspective of China’s ’internal’ dynamics and suggests that Arrighi’s argument has been developed without proper reference to China’s complex realities. As an alternative, the contribution proposes a research-agenda that could better account for these realities.

In 2007, Matthew Philip Gill, a resident of Derbyshire, England, announced the formation of the Latter Day Church of Jesus Christ. He claimed to be acting under angelic direction, and produced a new scripture, the Book of Jeraneck, to usher in his new faith. Gill's church is a restoration of a restoration: he claims to have restored the Mormon movement, which Joseph Smith founded as a restoration of the church Jesus organized, but which Gill claims has fallen into apostasy——particularly its primary iteration, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), which Gill was raised in but has abandoned. This article analyzes the relationship between Gill's movement and the LDS church, pointing out the ways in which Gill draws upon the Mormon tradition to claim authority for his new church, but also the ways in which Gill seeks to alter the balance of tension between the LDS church and the culture around it. The article particularly explores Gill's founding narrative, comparing its language, motifs, and forms of spirituality with those of Joseph Smith; the Book of Jeraneck's intertextual relationship with the Book of Mormon; and Gill's story of LDS apostasy.

The food habits, survival rates, and abundance of four predatory fish species (striped bass, walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass) were determined and combined with information on energetics and growth to quantitatively assess predator-prey interactions in Smith Mountain Lake, a large hydroelectric reservoir in south-central Virginia. A total of 1871 stomachs of the four species was examined from fish collections between April 1983 and December 1984. Food habits of each predatory species were assessed and compared by season using Schoener's (1970) diet overlap index. Significant diet overlap occurred between the pelagic predators (striped bass and walleye) and between the littoral black basses (largemouth bass and smallmouth bass) in all seasons and locations where sufficient stomach samples were collected. Survival and abundance estimates for the four predators were derived from several data sets. First-year survival of striped bass fingerlings averaged 20.8% for an 11-year period (1973 to 1983) and ranged from 3.9% to 54.3%. Average survival of age-0 largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was 53% and 45%, respectively, for the period 1979 to 1983. Species-specific survival rates for predators age 2 and older ranged from 29% to 59%. Of the predators age 1 and older, largemouth bass were the most numerous at an estimated density of 61.2/ha, followed by striped bass at 16.3/ha. Age 1 and older smallmouth bass and walleye were less abundant, at densities of 8.2 and 2.0/ha, respectively. A bioenergetics model was developed for striped bass and, with models developed for walleye and largemouth bass, used to estimate annual consumption of alewives and gizzard shad by the four piscivorous species. Annually, striped bass consumed the greatest amount of adult and young-of-year alewives, whereas largemouth bass ate nearly 70% of the total shad biomass consumed by all predators. A comparison of predator demand to clupeid supply substantiated diet overlap data; namely, that native and introduced predators were compatible in Smith Mountain Lake. The striped bass bioenergetics model was used to make inferences about potential stocking strategies for striped bass based on availability of age-1 and older alewives. A stocking rate of 20-24 fingerlings/ha appears to maximize production of striped bass and minimize potential competitive interactions between striped bass and native black bass in Smith Mountain Lake.

Whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are the world's largest living fish yet in 1980 Wolfson was able to document only 345 records of the species. The sharks have been recorded from around the Seychelles islands since 1768 and the area provides ideal opportunities for scientific investigation of the species. The distribution, abundance and movement of whale sharks were studied with a combination of aerial survey and in-water identification studies from 2001 to 2006. The temporal and spatial distribution of whale sharks was limited and patchy and was affected by physical and environmental parameters. These studies also showed that the population comprised mainly juvenile males with very few females or adult sized sharks. A large proportion of the sharks present bore scars due to either natural causes, anthropogenic causes, or a combination. Tagging and satellite tracking studies showed that the whale sharks migrate away from Seychelles, but that a large proportion, > 23%, are resighted around Seychelles in subsequent years. Digital photo-identification studies confirmed this high level of resighting and catch-markrecapture modelling estimated a population of 154-180 sharks during this period. Details of the sharks' behaviour revealed by Pop-up Archival Tags that showed the sharks spent a very large proportion of their time at water depths of less than 50 m, but made dives to depths in excess of 1000 m. These data also showed that the diel pattern of behaviour varied over time, probably in relation to bathymetry and other parameters. A two-year visual study of behaviour, based on aerial observations, indicated that the mean time spent swimming at the surface was significantly shorter when boats were in their direct vicinity (53 s c.f. 131 s). The implications of these findings are discussed with respect to the management and conservation of the species in both local and international contexts.

Spodoptera frugiperda is one of the main insect pests of the New World, and causes extensive damage to economically important crops such as cotton and corn. One of the most common control strategies is the use of Bt plants; however, their intense and indiscriminate use has led to the evolution of resistance in some populations. The establishment of a refuge can be a viable option to delay this process. Refuges consist of areas where non-Bt crops are planted, in order to provide susceptible insects to the population. In this study, I initially developed a model to describe the evolution of resistance of fall armyworm populations in different refuge configurations (seed mixture, blocks, and strips) and sizes (20% - 50%), considering the larval movement. I demonstrated that with a seed mixture, in most cases, the higher the rate of larval movement, the higher the proportion of resistant insects in the population, regardless of the type of resistance tested; meanwhile, strip configurations showed the opposite trend. In the second part of this study, I obtained data to validate the proposed model. The development of the fall armyworm on corn leaves was determined at five constant temperatures ranging from 14°C to 30°C. These data were also used to estimate the number of generations of fall armyworms at 42 locations in the state of Florida, from 2006 to 2016, which were interpolated and represented on maps, using GIS (Geographic Information System). I observed that counties farther south had the highest numbers of generations, and that fall armyworms should be able to overwinter as far north as ~29°N. Using the data obtained in the experiment, a new model was proposed, covering a wider range of conditions and allowing the user to define the crop area, the thermal requirements of the population studied, the viability and oviposition functions, the migration rate, the rate of larval movement and the frequency of alleles for resistance. The model was verified with monitoring data collected in a crop area in Florida from 2012 - 2015, only 70 km from the area that provided the population for the experiment. I also used the model to estimate the number of adults for 2016 and for two hypothetical situations that considered possible scenarios involving global warming (mean temperatures in 2016 + 1°C and + 2°C). The model succeeded in fitting the monitoring data, and indicated that the simulated increases in mean temperature could produce outbreaks nearly twice as large as the levels of fall armyworm estimated for 2016. The model can be used to estimate the population dynamics of S. frugiperda in a particular area, according to the crop composition and disposal, to investigate the effects of temperature changes on the levels of fall armyworm populations, to define appropriate refuge areas in order to manage the evolution of insect resistance, and to define the best periods for plantation and harvesting during the year to reduce pest populations, among others.
Spodoptera frugiperda é um dos principais insetos-praga do hemisfério ocidental, causando diversos danos a cultivos de interesse econômico, como milho e algodão. Uma das estratégias mais comuns de controle é o uso de plantas Bt, contudo sua aplicação intensa e indiscriminada levou à evolução de resistência em algumas populações. O estabelecimento de refúgio pode representar uma opção viável para atrasar esse processo. Refúgios são áreas nas quais cultivos não-Bt são plantados de forma a fornecerem insetos suscetíveis para a população. Neste estudo, eu desenvolvi inicialmente um modelo para descrever a evolução de resistência de populações de S. frugiperda em diferentes configurações de refúgio (mistura de sementes, blocos e faixas) e tamanhos (20 - 50%), considerando o movimento larval. Eu demonstrei que para a mistura de sementes, na maioria dos casos, maiores taxas de movimentação larval implicavam em maiores proporções de insetos resistentes na população, independente do tipo de resistência testada, enquanto áreas com configurações em faixas apresentaram tendência oposta. Na segunda parte deste trabalho, eu obtive dados para validar o modelo proposto. O desenvolvimento de S. frugiperda em folhas de milho foram determinadas em 5 temperaturas constantes variando de 14°C a 30°C. Estes dados também foram utilizados para estimar o número de gerações do inseto em 42 localizações no estado da Flórida de 2006 a 2016, que foram interpolados e representados em mapas, utilizando SIG (Sistema de Informações Geográficas). Eu observei que condados mais ao sul apresentaram maior número de gerações e que S. frugiperda é capaz de passar o inverno abaixo de latitudes ~29°N. Utilizando os dados obtidos no experimento, um novo modelo foi proposto, considerando um intervalo maior de condições e permitindo ao usuário definir a área de cultivo, as exigências térmicas da população estudada, as funções de oviposição e viabilidade, a taxa de migração, a taxa de movimentação larval e a frequência do alelo de resistência. O modelo foi verificado com dados de monitoramento de 2012 a 2015, coletados em uma área de cultivo localizada na Flórida, distante apenas 70 km da área que forneceu a população para o experimento laboratorial. Eu também utilizei o modelo para estimar o número de adultos para 2016 e para duas situações hipotéticas que consideraram possíveis cenários envolvendo o aquecimento global (médias de temperaturas de 2016 + 1°C e + 2°C). O modelo se ajustou aos dados de monitoramento com sucesso e indicou que os aumentos simulados na temperatura média poderiam produzir surtos quase duas vezes maiores que os níveis de S. frugiperda estimados para 2016. O modelo pode ser usado para estimar a dinâmica populacional de S. frugiperda em uma determinada área de acordo com a composição e disposição dos cultivos, investigar os efeitos das mudanças de temperatura nos níveis populacionais, definir áreas de refúgio apropriadas para o manejo da evolução de resistência, definir os melhores períodos para plantação e colheita durante o ano de forma a reduzir a população da praga, entre outros.

Resumo: Este trabalho teve como objetivo coletar dados de fatores de mortalidade que determinam a regulação populacional da lagarta-do-cartucho do milho e também avaliar a interferência de Telenomus remus neste processo. Durante a safra de 2009 (cultivos de 1ª e 2ª safras) blocos experimentais com e sem liberação de T. remus foram instalados. As fases de ovo e larva foram avaliadas separadamente. Plantas de milho foram infestadas artificialmente com massas de ovos e larvas obtidas de criação de laboratório. As avaliações consistiram no registro de ovos remanescentes, assim como as interações ecológicas por meio de macrofotografias. Amostragens destrutivas diárias foram realizadas para registrar o número de larvas remanescentes e coletar e quantificar os inimigos naturais presentes. A mortalidade de larvas de ínstares iniciais foi maior do que a mortalidade de ovos. A predação foi o principal fator biótico de mortalidade, predominante na 1ª safra. Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) foi o predador mais importante. T. remus não parasitou ovos durante a 1ª safra e na 2ª safra, os níveis de parasitismo por este agente e a ocorrência natural de Trichogramma sp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) foram baixos. Predação por insetos herbívoros, tais como Diabrotica sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) e Leptoglossus sp. (Hemiptera: Coreidae) foi registrada. Não foi observada predação em larvas, apesar da presença de Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), um reconhecido predador de lagartas de primeiros ínstares. Abstract: This work aimed to obtain data of mortality key-factors that determine the fall armyworm (FAW) population regulation and also to assess the impact of Telenomus remus on this regulation. During the 2009, experimental blocks were designed with and without releases of T. remus during two growing seasons. The egg and larval stages were evaluated separately. Maize plants were artificially infested using egg masses and larvae from the laboratory mass rearing. The evaluations consisted of recording the number of remaining eggs, as well as ecological interactions through macrophotography. Daily destructive sampling was carried out to record the number of remaining larvae as well as to collect and to quantify the natural enemies. The earlyinstar mortality was larger than egg mortality. The predation was the main mortality biotic factor and predominant in the first growing season. Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) was the most abundant predator. T. remus did not parasitize any egg during the first growing season and the parasitism levels by this agent and naturally occurring Trichogramma sp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) were low on the second season. Predation by herbivorous insects such as Diabrotica sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Leptoglossus sp. (Hemiptera: Coreidae) was recorded. It was not observed any predation on larvae, despite the presence of Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), a recognized FAW early instars predator. O tubarão-martelo, Sphyrna lewini é um dos mais valiosos recursos marinhos, e o preço pago por suas barbatanas no mercado Asiático pode atingir acima dos U$ 100,00/kg. A análise da composição de tamanhos e idades nas capturas, o estudo do crescimento desta espécie de grande porte e a evolução temporal dos desembarques, indicaram que este recurso se encontra sobreexplotado no sudeste e sul do Brasil, como reflexo de diferentes modalidades pesqueiras atuando ao longo de todo o seu ciclo de vida e à baixa resiliência desta espécie à pesca, por apresentar um crescimento lento (L∞ = 329,12 cm; K = 0,071 ano-1; to = -2,37 ano; sexos combinados), longevidade acima dos 40 anos e mortalidade natural baixa (M = 0,1 ano-1 na fase adulta), padrões estes típicos de uma espécie K-estrategista . A sobrepesca de recrutamento, ocorre nas áreas costeiras, principalmente pela pesca de arrasto e emalhe costeiro, não havendo a proteção das áreas de parto na primavera-verão. Neste caso há grandes capturas de neonatos e juvenis até 8 anos de idade. A tração adulta por sua vez é reduzida pela pesca de espinheI e de emalhe de superfície principalmente na zona de talude. Modelos de análise de covariância indicaram maiores capturas desta espécie na pesca de espinheI de monofilamento de superfície durante os meses de primavera-verão, na zona de talude (200 e 3000 m) e a existência de uma relação linear positiva entre a captura em peso e o esforço em número de anzóis. Medidas de manejo e conservação para esta espécie são sugeridas.
The scalloped hammerhead shark Sphyrna lewini is one of the most valuable marine resources, due to its high-priced fins in the Asian market, which can reach U$ 100,00/kg. The analysis of the length and age composition in the catches, growth studies, and the annual development of its landings in southern Brazil, showed signs of overexploitation for the species. This effect was mainly caused by different fishing gears exploiting all the phases of its life-cycle and its low resilience to fishing pressure due to its slow-growing strategy (L∞ = 329,12 cm; K = 0,071 yr-1; to = -2,37 ano; both sexes), longevity (> 40 yrs.) and low natural mortality (M = 0,1 yr-1, during adult phase), which means a K\'strategic typical pattern. Recruitment overfishing use to happen in coastal areas by trawls and anchored gillnets activities which destroy the nurseries and juvenile grounds for the species, mainly in spring-summer months when the parturition occurs. On the other hand, the adult fraction of the stock is reduced by surface longline and driftnets activities along the continental slope. For the surface monofilament longline fisheries, covariance models detected the highest catches of scalloped hammerhead sharks along the slope (between 200 - 3000 m depth), during spring-summer months. There was also a positive linear relationship between catch (in weight) and effort (hook number). Management and conservation measures are recommended for this species.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo coletar dados de fatores de mortalidade que determinam a regulação populacional da lagarta-do-cartucho do milho e também avaliar a interferência de Telenomus remus neste processo. Durante a safra de 2009 (cultivos de 1ª e 2ª safras) blocos experimentais com e sem liberação de T. remus foram instalados. As fases de ovo e larva foram avaliadas separadamente. Plantas de milho foram infestadas artificialmente com massas de ovos e larvas obtidas de criação de laboratório. As avaliações consistiram no registro de ovos remanescentes, assim como as interações ecológicas por meio de macrofotografias. Amostragens destrutivas diárias foram realizadas para registrar o número de larvas remanescentes e coletar e quantificar os inimigos naturais presentes. A mortalidade de larvas de ínstares iniciais foi maior do que a mortalidade de ovos. A predação foi o principal fator biótico de mortalidade, predominante na 1ª safra. Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) foi o predador mais importante. T. remus não parasitou ovos durante a 1ª safra e na 2ª safra, os níveis de parasitismo por este agente e a ocorrência natural de Trichogramma sp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) foram baixos. Predação por insetos herbívoros, tais como Diabrotica sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) e Leptoglossus sp. (Hemiptera: Coreidae) foi registrada. Não foi observada predação em larvas, apesar da presença de Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), um reconhecido predador de lagartas de primeiros ínstares. This work aimed to obtain data of mortality key-factors that determine the fall armyworm (FAW) population regulation and also to assess the impact of Telenomus remus on this regulation. During the 2009, experimental blocks were designed with and without releases of T. remus during two growing seasons. The egg and larval stages were evaluated separately. Maize plants were artificially infested using egg masses and larvae from the laboratory mass rearing. The evaluations consisted of recording the number of remaining eggs, as well as ecological interactions through macrophotography. Daily destructive sampling was carried out to record the number of remaining larvae as well as to collect and to quantify the natural enemies. The earlyinstar mortality was larger than egg mortality. The predation was the main mortality biotic factor and predominant in the first growing season. Doru luteipes (Dermaptera: Forficulidae) was the most abundant predator. T. remus did not parasitize any egg during the first growing season and the parasitism levels by this agent and naturally occurring Trichogramma sp. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) were low on the second season. Predation by herbivorous insects such as Diabrotica sp. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) and Leptoglossus sp. (Hemiptera: Coreidae) was recorded. It was not observed any predation on larvae, despite the presence of Orius insidiosus (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae), a recognized FAW early instars predator. No presente estudo verificou-se que não houve impedimento para o estabelecimento de espécies arbóreas no sub-bosque de plantios de Eucalyptus saligna Smith. sem nenhuma prática de manejo há 13 anos. Para quantificação desses processos de regeneração, este trabalho teve os seguintes objetivos específicos: analisar a composição florística, a estrutura, e alguns aspectos da dinâmica de um fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Densa, denominada área A1, comparando-a com a dinâmica de regeneração de espécies nativas em sub-bosque de plantios de E. saligna., abandonado há 13 anos, aqui denominada área A2. Foram alocadas 10 parcelas de 10 x 20m em cada área, onde foram efetuadas as análises da composição florística, fitossociológica, chuva de sementes e luminosidade. Foram realizadas coletas de amostras de solo para análise química. Os resultados indicam a ocorrência de 95 espécies distribuídas em 31 famílias na área A1, sendo 59 espécies exclusivas desta área. Na área A2 foram encontradas 53 espécies nativas, distribuídas em 25 famílias, com 17 espécies ocorrentes apenas nesta área. Estes valores apontam um índice de similaridade de 32% entre as áreas, ou seja, possuem 36 espécies em comum. Os resultados encontrados nos permitem classificar a área A1 em estágio médio e avançado de regeneração e a área A2 em estágio inicial de regeneração. Verificou-se também a possibilidade concreta de se recuperar a área com a remoção dos indivíduos de E. saligna, tendo em vista que a regeneração natural já se encontra em estágio acelerado nessa área.
This study has shown that the natural establishment of tree species in the understory of abandoned Eucalyptus plantation for 13 years was not affected. For the quantification of the regeneration process, this study addressed the following objectives: study the floristic composition, vegetation structure and other aspects of vegetation dynamics of a tropical rain forest fragments, defined as: A1 area, which was compared with another area where native regeneration is happening in the understory of abandoned E. saligna., for 13 year, defined as A2. Ten permanent plots of 10 x 20m in each area were located, where analysis of floristic composition, phytosociology, seed rain and light intensity were conducted. Soil samples were also collected for fertility analysis. The results have shown an occurrence of 95 species from 31 families in A1 area, being 59 endemic species to this site. In the A2 area, 53 species of 25 families were found, being 17 endemic to this site. Similarity index was 32%. The results allow the classification of the A1 area as intermediate to advance stage of regeneration, while the A2 area is of early stage. The removal of Eucalyptus trees could also enhance the natural regeneration of the A2 area, and speeding the process up.

The chapter critically reappraises the work of the British experimental filmmaker John Smith, drawing on analyses of key films and interview material to explore his use of sound, music and voice. Smith’s films often engage self-reflexively with how sound creates or accepts meaning within an audiovisual context. Influenced by structural film practice of the 1960s and 1970s, and underpinned by a Brechtian concern with the politics of representation, Smith’s often humorous work both foregrounds and deconstructs the sound-image relations at work in dominant modes of cinematic representation. This analysis of Smith’s work identifies the political dynamic of the filmmaker’s use of sound, and addresses what is at stake—for both Smith and his audience—in the self-reflexive concern with audiovisual modes of representation. Examined within this context are Smith’s creative focus on the production of meaning and how this relates to aspects of musicality and abstraction in his work.

Politicians and policymakers, for instance, are using arguments that reference environmental migration in their political discourses or increasingly reflect on how to manage this seemingly emerging trend. The rise of this topic on ‘the agenda’ of policymakers, politicians, non-governmental organisations, and artists, to name a few, immediately calls for some scientific support, framing, or input, which is suddenly in high demand. Also, from a scientific perspective, how people are dealing with ongoing and increasing environmental changes lays bare existing social, ethnic, and gender inequalities. To be specific, when studying environmental changes and disasters, more knowledge can be derived about a society’s social and economic structure, relationship dynamics, and the nature of its adaptation capacity. Additionally, more knowledge can be gained about how external communities or countries are related to the studied society (Oliver-Smith 1999).

AbstractModern challenges, such as global environmental change, cannot be dealt with via the generation of knowledge alone. Even in-principle public support requires broad recognition of responsibility to translate knowledge into appropriate action. This cannot be achieved where minds are closed, in which case greater levels of knowledge can actually feed into perverse outcomes. Overcoming these dynamics is facilitated to the extent that individuals adopt a deliberative stance (Owen D, Smith G, J Political Philosophy 23:213–234, 2015), which involves, inter alia, openness to ideas and hastens the rush to judgement on issues involving uncertainty and complexity—a scepticism of the self. In this paper, the author demonstrates the effects of the deliberative stance and the conditions under which it is best achieved. I draw my evidence from small-scale settings described by deliberative minipublics, but the observed mechanisms can be “scaled up” to inform possibilities for wider reform of the processes governing the uptake and use of knowledge.

Research on interpreters as authors of autobiographies has typically focused on the interpreting activity in authoritarian regimes, in trials, or diplomacy. A great number of the author-interpreters portray a hero figure positioned in often close relationship with the person in power. This chapter deals with another kind of interpreter figure who I will call “anti-hero”. The settings explored are the Great War, the International Brigades in the Spanish Civil War, and Nazi concentration camps, as depicted in the interpreters’ memoirs. The chapter aims to elaborate on the main features of these anti-hero interpreters based on the framework proposed by Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson (2010), who suggest a set of concepts helpful for understanding the dynamic processes of autobiographical subjectivity, including memory, experience, or agency.

Religion scholar Mircea Eliade held that the “question of character of place on which one stands is the fundamental question.” Smith engages the idea of place in developing a definition of religion as well as holding that the scholar’s selection of theory determines a study’s results. In a classic Smith position he outlined two kinds of maps common to religions, locative (place embracing) and utopian (place avoiding). The chapter shows that these are mirrors of one another and that neither is actually achievable. The chapter focuses then on Smith’s third unnamed mapping strategy that is akin to joke and play, arguing that play is fundamental to Smith’s theories of place, myth, and ritual. Religions are understood in terms of application and adjustment, the iterative, negotiative, interactive dynamics of play. Furthermore, the chapter argues that, following Smith, this same dynamic is at the core of a proper academic study of religion.

The classical model of Malthus ([1783] 1970) can be described as a supply-side, dynamic, macro theory of population. It is a supply-side theory because Malthus did not emphasize the role of individual demand decisions on population-related variables. Individuals in ancient times certainly had their preferences for children and marriage; but Malthus assumed that such preferences would by and large be checked by natural constraints and that only when families had sufficient incomes would their preferences for children and marriage be effectively revealed (Schultz, 1981). In ancient times, when the hygienic environment and medical technology were primitive, and when production technology and administrative capacity changed relatively slowly, the natural checks on human growth and fertility almost always dominated the dynamics of population; the demand-side scenario, which originates from individual preferences, never played a significant role. The Malthusian theory is mainly a dynamic one because it describes why a population would have an equilibrium size that corresponds to the subsistence level of income and why a population would converge to such an equilibrium. Malthus argued that when a population size is larger than the equilibrium size, the per capita income will fall because of diminishing returns. This fall will be followed by an increase in mortality and a reduction in population growth rate, which in turn will drive the population size down to the equilibrium. When a population size is smaller than the equilibrium, the adjustment mechanism works in the opposite way, and the size increases toward the equilibrium. The conventional Malthusian model also largely ignores differences in decisions made by individual families; hence a set of macro variables becomes the only focus, thereby making a simple dynamic analysis possible. As Samuelson (1976) pointed out, although most classical economists, such as Adam Smith, David Ricardo, and John Stuart Mill, considered population analysis part of economics, by the early twentieth century most economists had decided that demographic movements were largely exogenous to the economic system and should be left to sociologists and other noncconomists for discussion. A more active alternative for economists is to modify the conventional Malthusian theory to allow it to be compatible with contemporary population practices and issues.

Abstract Chapter 1 argues that the style and structure of aphorisms, whose accomplished rhetorical suaveness allows them to imprint on the mind but quickly slip from it, mirrors an aesthetic which pervades Stevie Smith’s poetry. Smith designs her poems so that the reader cannot absorb or assimilate their content. Through comparison to aphoristic techniques, this chapter examines the passionate rhetorical gestures made by Smith’s poems, where a proposition is announced clearly and insistently. Poems such as ‘Croft’ insist on themselves, yet are self-sufficient: they inhabit the solid shape of a rhetorical position though their content may, despite appearances, be minimal. Revelations are both made and concealed, rooting these dynamics in the aphorism’s promise that absolute truth lies within its boundaries, though the reader inevitably fails to marshal a set of interpretative terms with which to tackle it. Arguing that unsuccessful epiphany is built into the aphorism’s truth-value, the chapter reads Smith’s poems as texts which cannot live up to the extent of the revelation which their forms promised. Both over- and underdetermined, in form and content respectively, they signal that they have power even as they cauterise the interpretative mechanisms which readers might rely on to access that power. Smith’s aphoristic aesthetic allows her to drive towards a model of value which constructs itself in the moments of lapse implicit in the rhythm of aphoristic engagement. Aphorism offers a model of reading which can accommodate illegitimate extremes of feeling, by allowing the reader to depart from them and return as necessary.

For the first time, a closed-form analysis is presented for the time-varying operation of belt-drives. The analysis is developed as a perturbation away from the analysis of a steadily rotating belt-drive. The intent is to derive expressions for the span tensions, the pulley tension distributions, and the driven pulley angular velocity; and to document the existence of a lone slip zone for a belt-drive operating under time-varying conditions. A lone slip zone on the trailing edge of each pulley is well-known for steady operating conditions [Johnson, K.L., 1984],[Smith, D.P., 1999]. An alternative computational solution using an in-house finite element code is also presented, which demonstrates excellent agreement with the response quantities predicted by the analytical solution, and which also verifies the existence of a lone slip zone preceded by a stick zone.

Abstract Polymer dynamics has been studied for many years because of its importance in many areas including materials, mechanics, biology, and medicine (Munk, 1989; Hoffman, et al., 1984). The dynamics of macromolecules in shear flow has been studied using light scattering and birefringence, but the effect of shear on the dynamics of individual polymers is not well understood (Doi & Edwards, 1986; de Gennes, 1991; de Gennes, 1997). Recently we studied the conformational changes of DNA molecules under shear in dilute concentration (LeDuc et al., 1998). Here we report the observations of the dynamics of fluorescently-labeled DNA molecules in a shear flow with increased concentration. Under a controlled shear flow, these flexible polymers exhibit various extended conformations, which range from parallel to perpendicular in orientation when compared to the flow direction. The amount of stretching that occurs in these experiments is found to be less than that for the dilute concentrations of the DNA solutions. Further, the stretching of the molecular solutions is found even at shear rates much smaller than the inverse of the relaxation time of the molecule. The in situ observations also reveal the effect of polymer concentration on the entanglement of macromolecules. These results provide insight into the behavior of individual and concentrated polymer molecules under shear and help further development of models for polymer dynamics (Perkins, et al., 1994; Smith, et al., 1992; Wirtz, 1995).

<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Steering actuator lag is detrimental to the performance of lateral control systems and often leads to oscillation, reduced stability margins, and in some cases, instability. If the actuator lag is significant, compensation is required to maintain stability and meet performance specifications. Many recent works use a high-level approach to compensate for delay by utilizing model-based methods such as model predictive control (MPC). While these methods are effective when accurate models of both the vehicle and the actuator are available, they are susceptible to model errors. This work presents a low-level, adaptive control architecture to compensate for unknown or varying steering delay and dynamics. Using an inner-loop controller to regulate steer angle commands, oscillation can be reduced, and stability margins can be maintained without the need for an accurate vehicle model. The Smith Predictor (SP) control scheme is implemented in the inner-loop to mitigate the effects of the communication delay between the controller and the steering actuator. An algorithm will be presented to estimate both the communication delay between the controller and actuator and the steering dynamics. These estimates will be used to adapt the inner-loop SP to maintain gain and phase margins while reducing oscillation. Estimating the steering lag allows the algorithm to compensate for unknown or changing steering dynamics and communication delay. Results are presented both from simulation and from real-time experiments on a vehicle outfitted with drive-by-wire (DBW) hardware.</div></div>

Weep hole flow rates due to interlayer gap flow generated by an external pressure source are measured experimentally for an AO Smith Layered Pressure Vessel (LPV) at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. A Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model of the flow through the interlayer gaps is also done to provide further insight regarding flow behavior. The objectives of this project were: (i), to devise and conduct a suitable experiment that accurately measures weep hole flow rates based on pressure input at a single weep hole, and (ii), to interpret the data and provide recommendations regarding the management of potential leaks or failures of these LPVs. CFD predictions and experimental results both indicated that weep hole flow rates increase with increasing numbers of available layer gaps and increasing pressure. The highest flow rates occurred between weep holes that were longitudinally aligned, with the shortest path between them having no curvature. Flow rate results were not symmetric for weep holes located on opposite sides of any curved path. Results indicate that the proximity of weep holes to longitudinal welds appears to have a significant influence on flow symmetry, and that weep hole flow measurement may be a good indicator of localized gapping and inconsistent layer concentricity.

Abstract The multi-support rotary shafting system, represented by the ship propulsion shafting, is widely used in the power transmission device of the ship, and its working condition has a great influence on the operational safety of the ship. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct a dynamic analysis of the ship propulsion shafting. The ship propulsion shafting is used as a prototype to design a transmission shaft system fault detection platform based on the dual-engine parallel transmission mode. In order to accurately simulate the load loaded by the magnetic powder brake in the fault detection platform of the transmission shaft system, the control strategy of the magnetic powder brake loading is studied, including conventional PID control, Smith control, fuzzy Smith control and fuzzy Smith with integral action. The control realizes the ideal control effect of the magnetic powder brake. On the basis of the accurate load control effect, use the Adams software to conduct dynamic simulation analysis on the rigid-flexible hybrid model of the ship propulsion shafting. The dynamic characteristics of the shaft system under normal and fault conditions are studied, the research shows that the occurrence of collision and friction faults will increase the force fluctuation range of the shaft system, the shafting vibration will become more complex, and the characteristic frequency will have a large number of high-multiplication frequencies. The above analysis results have certain significance for the fault analysis of the transmission shaft system.

These are the notes and comments summarizing the incomplete work to assess stresses on vintage pipelines due to soil loadings. The work was performed by C-FER Technologies, Battelle Memorial Institute, and Marina Smith. The overall objective was to develop an assessment tool that would allow pipeline engineers to evaluate the safety of shallowly buried pre-1970 pipelines under static and cyclic surface loads. The work completed includes the development of a dynamic model. However, the weld capacity models were never completed. Related documents (attachments can be found in the links below).

In 2018, jetties and a sill were constructed by the US Army Corps of Engineers adjacent to the Sheep Pen Gut Federal Channel at Rhodes Point, Smith Island, Maryland. These navigation improvements were constructed under Section 107 of the Continuing Authorities Program. Material dredged for construction of the structures and realignment of the channel were used to restore degraded marsh. Following construction and dredging, 2 years of monitoring were performed to evaluate the performance of navigation improvements with respect to the prevention of shoaling within the channel, shoreline changes, and impacts to submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV). Technical Report ERDC/CHL TR-20-14 describes the first year of post-project monitoring and the methodologies employed. This report describes conclusions derived from 2 years of monitoring. While the navigation improvements are largely preventing the channel from infilling, shoaling within is occurring at rates higher than expected. The placement site appears stable and accreting landward; however, there continues to be erosion along the shoreline and through the gaps in the breakwaters. SAV monitoring indicates that SAV is not present in the project footprint, even though turbidity is comparable to the reference area. Physical disturbance of the bottom sediment during construction may explain SAV absence.
