One of the characteristic concepts present in the documents of the Gallic synods from the 5th to the 7th centuries is necator pauperum (slayer of the poor), and related to it necator egentium (slayer of the needy). This article aims to analyse the use of these expressions in the synodal legislation. It shows that the notion generally refers to two types of abuse: retention of the offers due to the Church, and various forms of seizure of Church property. The synods also stipulate severe penalties against those judged guilty of being “slayers of the poor”. The study presents the Gallic Church during a very intense political, social and cultural transition. It is a Church looking for its place in the new post-roman world, at a time of new opportunities and new dangers.

What is the source of emotion in Demon Slayer? This phenomenon of Demon Slayer may be a response to the era of neoliberalism and meritocracy. This paper attempts to analyze the meaning of tears and emotion in the context of Jean-Luc Nancy’s Finiteness and Judith Butler’s Vulnerability. The blood demons and demon slayers depicted in Demon Slayer are a group led by a few leader and there is a very powerful hierarchy. In that sense, are they all caught up in elitism and meritocracy? If not, where is the line which distinguish humans from blood demons? This problem appears most intensively in the movie version of Demon Slayer: Mugen Train (2020), especially in the scene where Akaza and Rengoku Kyojuro encounter and fight, and the conversation they have there. His response to Akaza, who praises Kyojuro’s abilities and recommends him to become a blood demon, is, “Human gets sick, grows old, and dies. That’s why human is beautiful.” It implies an awareness of human finiteness and vulnerability. What is important is that only here does the possibility of true solidarity arise. Could it be that the subcultural imagination of Demon Slayer provides comfort and solace to those who are exhausted by modern society’s endless competition? In this way, it becomes clear that Demon Slayer, especially Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, is able to succeed as cultural content of our time because it has deep relevance regarding the core issues raised by modern philosophy and shared them with the public.

Queer Desires: Fan Fiction about Vampires and Slayers In this article we analyze a selection of fan fiction stories in which fans engage in an intertextual dialogue with a source text. As an Internet-published literary form, fan fiction (or fanfic) is fairly new and the relatively democratic means of publication have meant a dramatically increased production. However, the intertextual dialogue with the source text reveals connections between fanfic and previous forms of rewritings. It is therefore rather in terms of content that fan fiction can be said to represent new strategies when negotiating the source material. The six fanfics chosen for the analyses are of the slash and femslash varieties in which samesex couples who are not romantically or sexually linked in the source text are paired. The fanfics take as their starting points Joss Whedon’s tv-series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and J. R. Ward’s romantic novels in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Authors of femslash pair the two Slayers Buffy and Faith and authors of slash engage the characters Vishous and Butch in a homoerotic relationship. Aside from analyzing examples of the fanfic form, the selection of stories based on source texts centering on vampires means an opportunity to investigate the function of this literary trope. Its attraction for fanfic authors can be said to stem from the figure’s inherent possibilities of representing alternative, queer sexualities. By analyzing narrative strategies and selected themes we argue that the (fem)slash texts illustrate negotiations both with genre and gender conventions of the source texts and a resistance to the heteronormative structures of today’s popular culture.

“God is dead,” declared philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “… and we have killed him” (1887)—a proclamation that numerous video game protagonists could aptly say by journey's end. The prominent god-slayer trope in video game storylines casts the gameworld's god(s) as the final boss, to be slain by players, inviting connection to real-world religious ideas. Adequate scholarly attention has not been given to the musical features of the god-slayer trope—specifically, the bosses’ unique battle tracks—to discover what the music's meaning contributes to the trope. Quantitative analysis of video games featuring the god-slayer trope reveals that the bosses’ battle tracks may strategically combine rock and sacred music topics for significant semiotic effect. This article explores the meanings associated with rock and sacred music topics, using analytic methods from the burgeoning field of musical semiotics. By invoking music-theoretic work in topic theory (Monelle 2006, Hatten 2004), agential modalities (Tarasti 1994), and virtual agency (Hatten 2018), I argue that the rock and the sacred music topics initially appear to conflict—but the trope serves as a hermeneutic premise for a meaningful and productive synthesis uniquely fit for the narrative god-slayer trope. Xenoblade Chronicles (2010) forms a striking case study, with its tracks “Zanza” and “The God-Slaying Sword” exemplifying the sacred-rock trope and its semiotic meaning in relation to the game's plot—a narratively apt battle hymn for the game's god-slaying protagonists. Using a cultural-historical lens, the conclusion explores connections between the narrative god-slayer trope and the descent of Japan's god-emperor from divinity to humanity.

The spectral, electrical, and mechanical properties of an ITO coating modified with shungite nanoparticles were studied in order to determine the potential applicability of such coatings in electronics as transparent conductive coating slayers. Shungite was deposited on the surface of the conductive layer using a non-contact laser method by varying the electric field strength from 100 to 600 V/cm. According to the results of the stuobtaineddy, the structuring modification of ITO coatings with shungite nanoparticles leads to a significant increase in both surface hardness and resistance, as well as to a shift in the transmission spectrum in the visible range towards longer wavelengths and an increase in transmission in the IR range.

The werewolf is, in the Romanian mitology, an extraordinary being, a demon who swallows the Sun and the Moon, thus causing eclipses. Multiple representations of this creature, such as regular animals (wolves and dogs) or even fantastic beings (dragons) have led to a mistery concerning the demon's appearance. The werewolf is the embodiment of evil, which disturbs the order of the world, and any deviation from a community can lead to one becoming a werewolf. So, werewolves, like ghouls, can appear from different sources: unnamed children, malformed children, kin-slayers, even an action that is contrary to a tradition can create a werewolf. A man will become a werewolf during an eclipse and most of the time, it's his soul that will ascend to the sky and devour the Sun and the Moon. If the bond between the soul and the body is broken during this transformation, the soul is lost forever.

Deer hunting has a long history in the US. It is supported by hunting cultures, described as necessary for protecting forest/plant biodiversity and ecosystems, but opposed by animal welfare and rights advocates as cruel. Using multiple literature sources, we examine the trade-off between protecting deer and ecosystems from harm in the context of contemporary America. We examine various approaches for exploring harms affecting nonhuman animal populations found in the green criminological, environmental sociology, wildlife conservation and management, and ecological literature. We argue that making sense of these opposing positions requires examining the extent of deer hunting to quantify those harms in some way. Here, we examine reported deer kills for US states for the period 1999–2020. These data indicate that nearly 7 million deer are taken annually in the US. We also examined some hypothesized correlates of deer harvesting across states. While these data tell us something about the number of deer killed, these data alone are insufficient. We argue no clear conclusion about the acceptability of deer hunting can be reached given the difficulty rectifying opposing moral/philosophical positions on deer hunting, opposing deer management objectives, and scientific evidence on the ecological impacts of deer populations in the US under contemporary conditions that include shrinking forest ecosystems and impaired ecosystem stability.

Abstract: This article explores two traditions on dragon slayers in Medieval Scandinavia, i.e., Sigurðr Fáfnisbani and saint Michael theArchangel. Considering the religious transformations at that time, the poetical changes with the introduction of a new faith, and the audience reception, the skáld “wove” their compositions to maintain their favorable positions among the scandinavian aristocracy. In the 21st century, concepts of human modification and improvement increasingly appear in scientific literature, extending beyond the realm of fantasy. Influenced by successful, advanced technological experiments, these concepts are transitioning from literary fiction to more serious philosophical discourse. This ancient quest first found literary expression in the 19th century, notably in the works of Jules Verne. Transhumanism in fantasy is primarily associated with science fiction, featuring human enhancement through advanced technology in narratives about distant futures, space travel, other planets, and the cyberpunk genre. However, the presence of transhumanist themes in fantasy literature receives less attention. In these cases, modifications are typically achieved through spells or the magical properties of potions and plants. In Poland, the most notable example is Andrzej Sapkowski’s The Witcher universe, further developed by CD Projekt Red’s video games. The most literal example is the witchers, monster slayers created through magical mutations. Wizards represent a less obvious group of enhanced characters. Similarly, Princess Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon embodies transhumanist aspirations. These examples collectively illustrate the diverse manifestations of transhumanism in fantasy literature.

Zombies have become prominent figures in popular culture in the twenty-first century. Books, movies and series are all fascinated with the walking dead and the possible meanings of the figure. International portrayals of zombies raise concerns about a lack of self-control; by contrast, this paper argues that Lily Herne’s Mall Rats series, which is about a zombie outbreak in South Africa, explores posthumanist associations with the dead. The philosophical approach of posthumanism can be used to question the ideas and conceptualisation of human identity. While humanism places humans at the centre of the universe, both in control of and separate from other living, animal and non-human beings, posthumanism acknowledges that this is only a myth. According to posthuman thought, human subjectivity is created through a connection to animal and non-human beings; it is an assemblage that co-evolves with all living beings on the planet. Thus, posthumanism can be used to study the representations of human identity that have been used to situate the human above other life forms. Herne depicts this posthuman subjectivity through her South African zombies categorised as Rotters and Guardians whose thoughts and emotions are connected with each other, animals and humans. It is this connection to all things that Herne proposes will end any form of discrimination. As it becomes more and more uncomfortable for the reader to side with zombie slayers, the posthumanist objective is realised as traditional beliefs that humans are somehow superior and more conscious than other beings on Earth come into question.

The objectives of this research was to evaluate the inheritance of albino slayer phenotype in brushmouth (Hypostomus plecostomus, Linn 1758) through the crosses and reproduction performance. The crossing scheme consisted of reciprocal crosses between albino slayer and albino non slayer (SN, NS) and between albino slayer (SS), each spawning in pairs (1:1) with three replications and twice spawning. The fish used in this study were brushmouth fish (Hypostomus sp.) albino Slayer males 9.07 ± 0.5 cm, albino slayer females 8.96 ± 0.4 cm, albino non slayer males 8.87 ± 0.17 cm, and albino non slayer female 8.86 ± 0.16 cm. Slayer phenotype category was identified based on the caudal length fin with 4.43 ± 0.64 cm. Parameters determined included the phenotype distribution of albino slayer, total number of eggs, fertilization rate, hatching rate and survival rate. The results showed that all crossing schemes produced four phenotypes classes including normal slayer, normal non slayer, albino slayer and albino non slayer. The slayer phenotype of albino brushmouth was highest percentage (75%) in crossing with male albino slayer (SN, SS) and highest number of eggs, while the reciprocal crossing with female albino slayer (NS) produced albino slayer 55% and lower egg count. The ratio of tail fin length to body length in albino slayer phenotype was lower than normal phenotype of broom fish. The fertilization and hatching rates were not significantly different in all crosses; however the number of eggs decreased in the second spawning. The similar phenotype cross between albino slayer phenotypes (SS) resulted the best average of survival rate (92%).

The Japanese Anime industry has grown wildly during the last few decades and has become one of the dominant forces in the media market in the 21st century. Among all the anime of Japan, one specific anime gained massive success in 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic started. The “Demon Slayer” (Kimeitsu no Yaiba) has defeated the well-known Spirited Away by Miyazaki Hayao and won the best-selling manga and movie of all time in Japanese anime-making history in a depression session of the industry. Its influence also went viral worldwide, especially in the younger generation, ages 10 to 20. The story of this anime is a traditional fairy tale of the brave saving the world, but the context of it is more Japanese-styled than others when the main characters are all samurai, and the villain is the “oni” (Japanese term for the monster). This study discovered several factors that contributed to Demon Slayer’s success from two perspectives: one is the usage of vital culturally represented elements, and another one is the shift made by the industry. This paper then discussed the anime industry in China. It used the “Nezha” anime to compare the existing inadequacies in the market and the possible ways to develop Chinese anime in an international market.

Streszczenie:
Introduction. In the oral tradition of Kalmyks, type ATU 300 The Dragon-Slayer serves an episode to magic and heroic folktales. In Kalmyk narratives, the main character slays a serpent to save a maiden from death. Such tales begin with that a hero takes the road to eliminate some shortage/trouble, the action be based on the former’s spatial movement. So, the to-be serpent-slayer travels through worlds: he descends to the lower world, returns to the human-inhabited middle one, undergoes some difficulties, and finds a bride. Thus, the motif of way proves central to the considered plots. Goals. The study aims to examine the motif of way in ATU 300-based (The Dragon-Slayer) Kalmyk folktales. Materials. The paper analyzes texts of published Kalmyk folktales. Results. In The Son of Khan Gal — Otkhon Shara (Kalm. Һал хаана отхн шар көвүн), the main character — like a tuuli-uliger hero — sets off on a journey after receipt of a message from his betrothed. And it is the traditional formula ‘good advice, or a palm-sized skin’ that provides a stage for the hero to meet the messenger. When it comes to describe the hero’s departure, the narrative involves the genre of yöräl (‘good wishes’) which goes back to magic folk poetry rooted in the belief word has power, a successful arrival in the other world be guaranteed by certain preparatory action and appropriate attributes that had once accompanied the deceased on their last journey. Another motive for a hero to start on a trip is that his reigning father loses eyesight. In The Story of Tögseg Khaan (Kalm. Ном Төгсг хаана туск тууҗ) sons are supposed to leave and dare see what their father never saw for his sight to recover. In this text, the function of adviser and donor is performed by a Buddhist priest — gelong — who replaces the image of zayachi (‘guardian genius’). The hero’s return journey from the lower world to the middle (human) one is associated with the image of Khan Garuda. Conclusions. The motif of way in ATU 300-based (The Dragon-Slayer) folktales tends develop in accordance with magic folktale morphological patterns (according to Propp) and within the framework inherent to oral (tuuli-uliger) traditions, paralleled by that Buddhist representations replace the earlier ones.

The article deals with issues related to the slayer rule in the framework of the common law system using the example of the USA, the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The slayer rule does not allow a person who killed or contributed to the death of another person to benefit from the murder. The positions reflected in judicial practice, as well as the legislative consolidation of the slayer rule, are analyzed. The slayer rule is a sanction on the borderline between civil and criminal law. Three principles according to which the slayer rule is applied are the intention of the testator, equity and morality. The application of the slayer rule is decided in accordance with established judicial practice and the discretion of the court. The authors discuss the application of the slayer rule in cases of manslaughter and murder committed in the situations of domestic violence. Some aspects of applying the slayer rule to murderers with mental disorders are considered. In some US states, the slayer rule applies not only in the case of murder, but also in the case of abuse of helpless elderly people for financial profit. The authors analyze judicial precedents and changes that affected the slayer rule throughout its existence.

Streszczenie:
The “Demon Slayer” series, including the original manga and anime, has become extremely popular around the world and is one of the most important Japanese contents to emerge since the 2010s. Among them, the manga “Demon Slayer” is the original content of the “Demon Slayer” series and has a high research value as it reveals the theme of the series in the most complete way. This paper aims to analyze the storytelling of “Demon Slayer” to reveal the socio-cultural implications of the work. The narrative uniqueness of the “Demon Slayer” lies in the ‘Oni’ that appears in the series. In the beginning, ‘Oni’ is depicted as an absolute evil that the protagonist must defeat, but as the work progresses, its character changes in a multilayered manner. The specificity of ‘Oni’ has a great influence on the narrative of the “Demon Slayer”, which is ultimately connected to the thematic consciousness of the work. However, in the current Korean literature, ‘Oni’ has not received much attention compared to its importance. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the storytelling of the work by focusing on ‘Oni’. As a methodology for analyzing storytelling, I used Ahn's ‘Story Balance Model’. The story balance model is suitable for analyzing “Demon Slayer” centered on the ‘Oni’ in the following ways. First, unlike traditional narrative analysis methodologies that focus on events or scenes, this methodology analyzes the narrative of a work by focusing on characters. Second, the work is analyzed through the eyes of a villain rather than a protagonist. The significance of this study is that it analyzes the work by focusing on the ‘Oni’, which have not received much attention in previous studies on “Demon Slayer”, and that it extends the story balance model to a developmental antagonistic narrative with a long story time.

This article sketches Slayer’s phenomenology in close connection with Hegel’s philosophy. It argues that, while the conceptual and teleological distance between the two parts is definitively a very large one, there are also important and rather unusual points of convergence on several topics, religion and war being the most prominent of them. Taking into account other seminal themes existent both in Slayer’s lyrics and, to a certain extent, in Hegel’s philosophy – like evil, criminality, scepticism and nihilism, besides the already mentioned religion and war, the article tries to introduce possible common grounds between these two radically different continents, arguing that Hegel’s dialectical method can be successfully extended also to apparently ‘exotic’ themes, as Slayer’s phenomenology, among many others.

Kata kunci: perancangan konsep karakter, Biwar the Legend of Dragon Slayer, Papua Designing the Character Concept of Biwar the Legend of Dragon Slayer by Devata Studio through Latrust Studio The Asmat tribe has diversity of cultures that can be explored deeper, one of which is a mythological story entitled Biwar the Dragon Slayer. It is about a young man who takes revenge on a dragon that killed his family. This story is quite interesting, but less well known by the public. Reflecting on the success of foreign game developers who are able to turn mythological stories into games with iconic characters, Devata Studio is also doing the same thing, namely making games based on Papuan mythological stories by collaborating with Latrust Studio in the process of designing the character concepts. The design of the character concept for Biwar the Legend of Dragon Slayer uses the method by Bryan Tillman in his book, Creative Character Design. Data collection was obtained from inter-views, observations, and literature studies which were then reduced. Then the data that has been obtained is analyzed using the 5W1H method. The result of this design is the concept of Biwar, enemies, and other supporting characters The results of the design of this character design are used in Biwar the Legend of Dragon Slayer, which published on the Steam platform. The design of this character concept can introduce Asmat culture and able to increase opportunities to introduce cha-racters in the world of the game industry. Keywords: character concept design, Biwar the Legend of Dragon Slayer, Papua
