Streszczenie:
In Fratelli tutti, Pope Francis wonders why it took the Church so long to condemn slavery unequivocally. Indeed, the place of slavery in Catholic teaching provides a test case of change in official Church intellectual tradition. This paper examines the divergent arguments of four authors who have written about Church teaching on slavery: Pope Leo XIII, Fr. Joel S. Panzer, Judge John T. Noonan Jr., and Fr. John Francis Maxwell. It considers the statement on slavery in the Catechism of the Catholic Church in light of Pope John Paul II’s meditation on the nature of human labor in Laborem exercens, itself a meditation on Leo’s Rerum novarum (On the Condition of Labor), and offers a critique of the position that papal teaching, because it must be self-consistent, is therefore irreformable or unsusceptible to development. This provides one response to the pope’s provocative question.

Streszczenie:
Possibility and limits of dialogue between religion and psychology is an interesting topic attracting significant attention of theologians and psychologists today. A century long experience of Catholic Church being in dialogue with modern psychological theory and practice is a proof of complexity and multifacetedness of this endeavor as well as an authentic illustration of its challenges, possibilities and potential solutions for all religious traditions faced with similar dilemmas. The aim of the study is threefold: 1) to offer a short historical overview of attitude of the Catholic Church towards achievements of modern psychological science, 2) to present the main areas and challenges faced by the Church in dialogue with and exploitation of contemporary psychology today and 3) to identify agents and mechanisms of this process. This attitude evolved from the initial suspicion and antagonism to respect towards achievements of healthy psychology and systematic attempt of their integration in Catholic teaching and pastoral work. Seemingly two factors are especially important for the achieved success, namely individual enthusiasm and systematic approach of Catholic theologian-psychologists to the issue at stake and the existence of minimum of official support in the Church for these endeavors, even at the time of the hey-days of anti-modernism in the Catholic circles. These are eventually the useful hints for all religious traditions perplexed with similar dilemmas.

The Sana county was identified as an administrative unit by sources from the end of the 12th century and the beginning of the 13th century, and the amount of information about this county increased over time. In the second half of the thirteenth century, the political situation in Sana county can be traced more precisely, and thus the administration over the area can be determined. The Güssing family were the first to take on this role, and since the 1280s, the Babonić family took over the administration of this county. The župani (prefects) who managed the comitatum de Zana are known, they are members of the lower nobility of this area, but little is known about the everyday lives of the ordinary people. The administrative structure in this area followed the old church division. There was a similar principle at work in Sana county, which was divided into 22 church parishes and was a part of the archdeaconate of Dubica within the diocese of Zagreb. In the period between 1280 and 1308, documents drawn up before the Ragusa and Zagreb notaries provide evidence of the life of a disenfranchised and non-liberated population from Sana county. Sana county recorded 18 slave sales during that period, two slavery release agreements, and one escape.

Activities of John Mitchel, the Irish patriot, are traced in the article. Special attention is paid to his attitude toward slavery, his understanding of the role and significance of the “peculiar institution” in the U. S. political system. Author comes to the conclusion that the Irish patriot was in fact highly consistent in his outlook with regard to this problem. He supported slavery, denounced abolitionists, advocated the re-opening of the African slave trade, was explicitly racist in his reasoning. He championed the South in the American Civil War. Mitchel himself seems not to have seen any contradiction in defending freedom for the Irish nation and standing for slavery in America. Nowadays supporters of the “Black Lives Matter” movement view Mitchel, first of all, as a human rights violator.

And, finaly through relations of personality and history we will see the constant modernity of Berdyayev’s thought.

Considered one of the biggest moments in the history of North America, the Civil War (1861- 1865) marked transformations in social, worker and race relations in the United States given the broader changes in the nineteenth century, especially related to the end of the African slave trade and the abolition of captives in the Americas. The war passed North-American boundaries and influenced changes in the forms of laborin the Brazilian economy. Through parliamentary, diplomatic and journalistic sources, among others, this thesis investigates how the information about the Civil War and its repercussions influenced political debates on the destiny of slavery between 1861, the year that the American conflict began, and 1888, the date that marks the official end of slavery in Brazil. Through a transnational perspective and articulating with the debates on the emancipation process in the Americas, this work aims to emphasis the ideas of abolitionists and politicians, their thoughts on the changes from servile to free labor, the destiny of the enslaved population, racial questions and economic production in Brazil. Consequently, this study has the objective of understanding how the American Civil War was interpreted in Brazil and how it influenced political discourses, emancipatory projects, as well as the writings of abolitionists between 1860 and 1880.

Streszczenie:
Twenty Eleven was a year of revolutions in northern Africa and the Middle East. Rising in Tunisia, the revolutionary wave has spread through Egypt, Libya, Syria and other countries. The common denominator of all insurgencies has been the people’s desire to shake off a long-endured yoke of tyranny which had resulted in a stagnant economy, poor life conditions and poorer public liberties. The word ‘democracy’ has become the catalyst of all aspirations. However, where the overthrowing of the dictator has succeeded, reform has been slow to come to pass, opening the door to new, potentially worse, forms of tyranny. The revolution John Milton envisioned during the years of England’s Interregnum was itself one of liberty. Toward such end he worked tirelessly for some two decades. He worked to see liberty projected in all areas of social and political life. Criticism has largely read this as the result of Milton’s apprehension of individual liberty as only fully definable within the context of public liberties. The present work argues that liberty is more appropriately seen in Milton as the rightful portion of the Christian man. In other words, liberty is more appropriately defined in Milton as Christian liberty. Liberal laws and institutions might afford relative liberties, through negotiation of individual and collective freedom, but never true liberty, the latter residing within: the man who was inwardly a slave, a slave must remain, irrespective of outward liberties. However, the man who was inwardly free, free must remain, irrespective of outward restraint. Inasmuch as it entails the restoration of mind and conscience from sin to inward liberty, Christian liberty is found setting the terms for the creation of an inward microcosm of rest and authority. If the work of Milton’s left hand is best read as Milton’s attempt at actualizing its pervasive domestic, ecclesiological and political ramifications, failure to see it reflected in his temporal community would alert the poet to the need for man to individually appropriate it, mindful that only the man who was inwardly free would be able to change his world.

In the 18th century Knights of the Cross belonged to the most significant patrons of Art in Czech lands. Church and monastery of St. František in Prague, the center of the Order, became the most influential culture center. The charity work of the Order of that time influenced the creation of the extraordinary institution - the Order's menza that had the significant importance for operating of organ lofts of St. František Church because it provided the sufficient amount of singers and musicians. In 1922 and 1923, fundamentalists had high hopes that they could impose their standards on some major northern denominations. Fundamentalists were strongest in the Northern Baptist Convention and in the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. At the Northern Baptist Convention meeting in 1922, they hoped to have the body adopt a traditional creedal statement. But the move was soundly defeated. In 1922 Harry Emerson Fosdick, a modernist Baptist filling a Presbyterian pulpit, preached, “Shall the Fundamentalists Win?” That set off a heated controversy in the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. Conservative William Jennings Bryan narrowly lost election as moderator for the 1923 General Assembly. But the assembly reaffirmed the five-point Presbyterian essential doctrines. Clarence McCartney, a leading conservative preacher, answered Fosdick in a sermon, “Shall Unbelief Win?” J. Gresham Machen issued Christianity and Liberalism in 1923, arguing that traditional Christianity and modernism were really two different religions.

Abstract Then Smith’s song first proclaimed America a “sweet land of liberty” and 1 \i a “land of the noble free” at Boston’s Park Street Church on 4July 1831, ‘over two million Americans were in bondage. In fact, a majority of the nation’s residents, including Native Americans, slaves, and women, were denied the franchise and other legal rights. Then-president Andrew Jackson was a slaveholder who wagered his human property on horse races and championed the removal of all Native Americans from lands east of the Mississippi. In 1831, Ohio disqualified African Americans from jury duty, Indiana required all African Americans entering the state to post bond, Mississippi made it illegal for free African Americans to remain in the state, and the white citizens of New Haven, Connecticut, voted seven hundred to four to prevent the construction of a college for African Americans.1Thus, despite Smith’s nationalist and evangelical fervor, not all (or even most) Americans could embrace ‘‘America”‘s promises without raising serious questions about the state of the union. Even in Boston, where ‘‘America” premiered and Smith’s fellow reformers held positions of high privilege, public transportation, schools, lecture halls, housing, churches, and public entertainment were divided along the color line. When an African American came to own a pew on the “whites only” lower floor of Boston’s Park Street Church one year before ‘‘America” was first performed there, he was prevented from occupying it. The Liberator reported that at the Sabbath school singers’ premiere performance of ‘‘America,” “the colored boys were permitted to occupy pews one-fourth the way up the side aisle;’ while “the colored girls took their seats by the door, as usual.”2 For many Americans, then, singing of a “sweet land of liberty” meant denying the reality of their own experience.

Abstract Hosea Easton wrote his Treatise in response to the wave of antiblack violence that swept northern cities and towns in the 1830s. In these selections he attacks the race-based inconsistencies and hypocrisies of American democracy. He also rejects the idea that African-descended persons are inherently different from their white counterparts; it is the conditions of American chattel slavery and antiblack racism that produce differences between black and white, he argues.

Abstract The impacts of racialized spiritual violence on Black LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning, asexual) individuals are complex. This chapter presents a Black queer theory for music therapy: Queer as Sacred (QAS). Through arts-based inquiry, the chapter explores a trauma-focused, intersectional, identity-based approach currently applied in S O U L F O L K Sounds. Musical improvisations grounded in African-American culture informs the author’s examination of anti-oppressive ideologies in four main sections, paralleling life in the Black Church: (i) altar/alter call, (ii) catching/sustaining the spirit, (iii) Sunday dinner, and (iv) the anointing. QAS positions queer Black bodies as sites of sacred resistance and virtual spaces of worthiness. This work argues for the reimagination of music therapy theory and practice in ways that amplify Black queer/quare experiences. Broader implications for the field of music therapy and related disciplines are discussed.
