A low and stable impedance at the skin–electrode interface is key to high-fidelity acquisition of biosignals, both acutely and in the long term. However, recording quality is highly variable due to the complex nature of human skin. Here, we present an experimental and modeling framework to investigate the interfacial impedance behavior, and describe how skin interventions affect its stability over time. To illustrate this approach, we report experimental measurements on the skin–electrode impedance using pre-gelled, clinical-grade electrodes in healthy human subjects recorded over 24 h following four skin treatments: (i) mechanical abrasion, (ii) chemical exfoliation, (iii) microporation, and (iv) no treatment. In the immediate post-treatment period, mechanical abrasion yields the lowest initial impedance, whereas the other treatments provide modest improvement compared to untreated skin. After 24 h, however, the impedance becomes more uniform across all groups (<20 kΩ at 10 Hz). The impedance data are fitted with an equivalent circuit model of the complete skin–electrode interface, clearly identifying skin-level versus electrode-level contributions to the overall impedance. Using this model, we systematically investigate how time and treatment affect the impedance response, and show that removal of the superficial epidermal layers is essential to achieving a low, long-term stable interface impedance.

We present a novel computational model of the human skin designed to investigate dielectric spectroscopy electrodes for stratum corneum hydration monitoring. The multilayer skin model allows for the swelling of the stratum corneum, as well as the variations of the dielectric properties under several hydration levels. According to the results, the stratum corneum thickness variations should not be neglected. For high hydration levels, swelling reduces the skin capacitance in comparison to a fixed stratum corneum thickness model. In addition, different fringing-field electrodes are evaluated in terms of sensitivity to the stratum corneum hydration level. As expected, both conductance and capacitance types of electrodes are influenced by the electrode geometry and dimension. However, the sensitivity of the conductance electrodes is more affected by dimension changes than the capacitance electrode leading to potential design optimization.

An electrocardiograph records the periodic voltage generated by the heart over time. There is growing demand to continuously monitor the ECG for proactive health care and human performance optimization. To meet this demand, new conductive textile electrodes are being developed which offer an attractive alternative to adhesive gel electrodes but they come with their own challenges. The key challenge with textile electrodes is that the relationship between the manufacturing parameters and the ECG measurement is not well understood, making design an iterative process without the ability to prospectively develop woven electrodes with optimized performance. Here we address this challenge by applying the traditional skin−electrode interface circuit model to woven electrodes by constructing a parameterized model of the ECG system. Then the unknown parameters of the system are solved for with an iterative MATLAB optimizer using measured data captured with the woven electrodes. The results of this novel analysis confirm that yarn conductivity and total conductive area reduce skin electrode impedance. The results also indicate that electrode skin pressure and moisture require further investigation. By closing this gap in development, textile electrodes can be better designed and manufactured to meet the demands of long−term ECG capture.

Knowledge of renal blood circulation is considered as an important physiological value, particularly for fast detection of acute allograft rejection as well as the management of critically ill patients with acute renal failure. The electrical impedance signal obtained from kidney with an appropriate electrode system and optimal electrode system position regarding to the kidney projection on skin surface reflects the nature of renal blood circulation and tone of renal blood vessels. This paper proposes a specific numerical modelling based on prior information from MRI-data. The numerical modelling was conducted for electrical impedance change estimation due to renal blood distribution. The proposed model takes into the account the geometrical and electrophysiological parameters of tissues around the kidney as well as the actual blood distribution within the kidney. The numerical modelling had shown that it is possible to register the electrical impedance signal caused by renal blood circulation with an electrode system commensurate with the size of kidney, which makes it possible to reduce the influence of surrounding tissues and organs. Experimental studies were obtained to prove the numerical modelling and the effectiveness of developed electrode systems based on the obtained simulation results. The obtained electrical impedance signal with the appropriate electrode system shows very good agreement with the renal blood change estimated using Doppler ultrasound. For the measured electrical impedance signal, it is possible to obtain the amplitude-time parameters, which reflect the hemodynamic characteristics of the kidneys and used in diagnostics, which is the subject of further research.

The subject matter of the article is an electromyographic signal transducer, which are an integral part of devices for adaptive electrical stimulation of muscle structures based on reverse electromyographic communication. The goal of the work is to study the features, obtaining the corresponding theoretical relationships and computer modeling of a differential biopotential converter, providing amplification of the useful component and suppression of harmful interference, the spectra of which intersect. The following tasks were solved in the article: determining the effect of electrode width and electrode spacing on crosstalk; formation of the electrode-skin model and the input circuit of the transducer, obtaining theoretical relations for calculating the rejection coefficient, construction of the transducer circuit and its computer simulation. The following methods were used – methods of mathematical modeling of processes and technical devices; methods of analysis, structural and parametric synthesis of nonlinear electronic circuits; methods of machine design. The following results were obtained – a biopotential amplifier circuit with tracking feedback on power supply is proposed; modeling of dynamic processes by means of the Multisim program was carried out; on the basis of the constructed model of the electrode-skin input circuit and the obtained analytical relationships, the rejection coefficient of the input circuit of the equivalent circuit is calculated; the requirements for the signal registration module are formulated. Conclusions: The considered version of the electromyographic signal converter circuit based on tracking communication on power supply, effectively rejects 50 Hz common mode noise. On the basis of the constructed equivalent model of the input circuit of the amplifier, the theoretical relation for calculating the rejection coefficient of such amplifiers. The circuit is simulated in the Multisim program, the results confirmed the correctness of its functioning. The requirements for the interelectrode distance and the thickness of the electrodes themselves are also formulated. The results obtained can be used to design complexes for adaptive electrical stimulation.

AbstractWe introduce a novel method for electronic recording of cardiac signals from a single point at the skin in contrast to classical differential electrocardiography (ECG). Ultralownoise transistor devices with an adaptable, auto-stabilizing transimpedance amplifier are able to measure tiny skin potential modulations from a single contact electrode located at an individual’s wrist (single-point cardiography-SPC). Although SPC signals were highly prone to interspersed noise, they contained periodic patterns. In an electromagnetically shielded setting, we could clearly extract breathing and cardiac rhythms from the acquired SPC signals. As the reference, we measured ECG in parallel. Several signal-processing techniques like smoothening, correlation, decomposition and signal extraction showed that SPC signals contain breathing and periodic heart potential variations, which are time-correlated with ECG. In the future, we intent to use this novel technique to measure heart signals from patients in different health conditions.

Long-term ECG (electrocardiogram) measurement in patients with burns is a complicated problem since the overlapping of surface contact electrodes can lead to additional injuries. The possibility of ECG recording in patients with burns using capacitive electrodes was not proved, and there are no models of the electrode contact with a patient’s body while rehabilitation means are used. In this paper, the model of the contact between capacitive electrodes and the skin was modified and the circuit model of the contact: skin – bandages (saline solution) – film – active capacitive electrode, was described. The influence of the parameters of a capacitive electrode on the amplitude-frequency characteristics (AFC) of the contact of an electrode with skin was assessed. It was found that contact capacitance is crucial to obtain a high-quality ECG signal. The parameters of the impedance of bandages, saline solution, a dielectric film were calculated, and their effect on the AFC was studied. Based on the modified model, the AFC contact was modeled taking into consideration all the calculated parameters; it was found that the resulting AFC of the contact corresponds to the frequency range of the ECG signal. Analysis of the calculations proves the possibility of using capacitive electrodes when applying various rehabilitation means. It was found that at a change in the impedance of the saline solution from 0.1 gigaohms to 1 gigaohm, the changes in the AFC of the contact are not crucial for the final quality of the received signal. All calculations were carried out by modeling in the Qucs environment (ngspice SPICE). Simulation results can be used in the development of new types of capacitive electrocardiographic electrodes. The proposed model can be used to study other wound covers, as well as to model physiological processes when putting artificial skin and wound covers

Abstract Purpose The purpose of the present study was to develop a numerical workflow for simulating temperature increase in a high-resolution human head and torso model positioned in a whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) radio-frequency (RF) coil in the presence of a transcranial electric stimulation (tES) setup. Methods A customized human head and torso model was developed from medical image data. Power deposition and temperature rise (ΔT) were evaluated with the model positioned in a whole-body birdcage RF coil in the presence of a tES setup. Multiphysics modeling at 3T (123.2 MHz) on unstructured meshes was based on RF circuit, 3D electromagnetic, and thermal co-simulations. ΔT was obtained for (1) a set of electrical and thermal properties assigned to the scalp region, (2) a set of electrical properties of the gel used to ensure proper electrical contact between the tES electrodes and the scalp, (3) a set of electrical conductivity values of skin tissue, (4) four gel patch shapes, and (5) three electrode shapes. Results Significant dependence of power deposition and ΔT on the skin’s electrical properties and electrode and gel patch geometries was observed. Differences in maximum ΔT (> 100%) and its location were observed when comparing the results from a model using realistic human tissue properties and one with an external container made of acrylic material. The electrical and thermal properties of the phantom container material also significantly (> 250%) impacted the ΔT results. Conclusion Simulation results predicted that the electrode and gel geometries, skin electrical conductivity, and position of the temperature sensors have a significant impact on the estimated temperature rise. Therefore, these factors must be considered for reliable assessment of ΔT in subjects undergoing an MRI examination in the presence of a tES setup.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation procedure to modulate cortical excitability and related brain functions. tDCS can effectively alter multiple brain functions in healthy humans and is suggested as a therapeutic tool in several neurological and psychiatric diseases. However, variability of results is an important limitation of this method. This variability may be due to multiple factors, including age, head and brain anatomy (including skull, skin, CSF and meninges), cognitive reserve and baseline performance level, specific task demands, as well as comorbidities in clinical settings. Different electrode montages are a further source of variability between tDCS studies. A procedure to estimate the electric field generated by specific tDCS electrode configurations, which can be helpful to adapt stimulation protocols, is the computational finite element method. This approach is useful to provide a priori modeling of the current spread and electric field intensity that will be generated according to the implemented electrode montage. Here, we present standard, non-personalized model-based electric field simulations for motor, dorsolateral prefrontal, and posterior parietal cortex stimulation according to twenty typical tDCS electrode configurations using two different current flow modeling software packages. The resulting simulated maximum intensity of the electric field, focality, and current spread were similar, but not identical, between models. The advantages and limitations of both mathematical simulations of the electric field are presented and discussed systematically, including aspects that, at present, prevent more widespread application of respective simulation approaches in the field of non-invasive brain stimulation.

AbstractElectroSlag Remelting (ESR) is widely used to produce high added value alloys for critical applications (aerospace industry, nuclear plants, etc.). In collaboration with Aubert & Duval, Institut Jean Lamour has been developing for several years a numerical transient model of an ESR heat. In the previous version of the model, the crucible was assumed to be perfectly electrically insulated from the electrode-slag-ingot system. However, this assumption must be challenged: the solidified slag skin at the slag/mold and ingot/mold interfaces may actually allow a fraction of the melting current to reach the crucible. In this paper, an evolution of the model is presented that enabled us to take into account the possibility of mold current. The simulation results were compared with actual experimental data. Sensitivity studies showed the influence of slag properties and operating parameters on the final quality of the ingot. Results highlighted that even a weakly conductive solidified slag skin at the inner surface of the model can be responsible for a non-negligible amount of current circulating between the slag and crucible, which modifies the fluid flow, heat transfer and solidification of both the slag phase and the metallic ingot.

This study assessed the effects of changes in skin temperature on multifrequency bioimpedance analysis (MF-BIA) and on the prediction of body water compartments. Skin temperature (baseline 29.3 +/- 2.1 degrees C) of six healthy adults was raised over 50 min to 35.8 +/- 0.6 degrees C, followed by cooling for 20 min to 26.9 +/- 1.3 degrees C, by using an external heating and cooling blanket. MF-BIA was measured at both distal (conventional) and proximal electrode placements. Both distal and proximal impedance varied inversely with a change in skin temperature across all frequencies (5–500 kHz). The change in proximal impedance per degree centigrade change in skin surface temperature was approximately 60% of distal impedance. The change in measured impedance at 50 kHz erroneously increased predicted total body water (TBW) by 2.6 +/- 0.9 liters (P < 0.001) and underpredicted fat mass by 3.3 +/- 1.3 kg (P < 0.0001). Computer modeling of the MF-BIA data indicated changes in predicted water compartments with temperature modifications; however, the ratio of extracellular water (ECW) to TBW did not significantly change (P < 0.4). This change in impedance was not due to a change in the movement of water of the ECW compartment and thus probably represents a change in cutaneous impedance of the skin. Controlled ambient and skin temperatures should be included in the standardization of BIA measurements. The error in predicted TBW is < 1% within an ambient temperature range of 22.3 to 27.7 degrees C (72.1–81.9 degrees F).

For medical device and artificial skin applications, etc., large-area tactile sensors have attracted strong interest as a key technology. However, only complex and expensive manufacturing methods such as fine pattern alignment technology have been considered. To replace the existing smart sensor, which has to go through a complicated process, a new approach including a simple piezoresistive patch based on artificial intelligence has been suggested. Specifically, a 16-electrode terminal was connected to the edge of a polydimethylsiloxane pad where multi-walled carbon nanotube sheets are well dispersed, and a voltage input to the center of the specimen. The collected data was calculated using a voltage divider circuit to collect the voltage data. 54 random positions were marked on the pad. 4 positions were configured as the validation data set and 50 positions as the training data set. We examined whether it was possible to determine points in untrained positions using a deep neural network (DNN) and 12 different machine learning (ML) algorithms. The result of a deep neural network for untrained point location identification was MSE: 0.00026, R2: 0.991158, and the result of Random Forest, an ensemble model among ML algorithms, was MSE: 0.00845, R2: 0.971239. Real-time position detection is possible using smart sensors created by combining simple bulk materials and artificial intelligence models from research results.

Purpose – In this paper a numerical simulation analysis of a modified stent-based electrode is introduced to be used as a bipolar electrode for radio frequency ablation of tumours located in hollow organs. The purpose of this paper is to study the possibility of achieving a more regular volume of induced lesion with the presented electrode without imperilling the ductal organ where the tumour is located. Design/methodology/approach – Three types of bipolar electrode configurations were considered, formed by two, three and five tubular segments. Numerical simulations were performed considering a tumour located in the bile duct, where two important blood vessels – the portal vein and the hepatic artery – have a significant impact due to the convective heat transfer caused by the blood flow (heat sink effect) which significantly affects the shape of lesion that is intended to induce in order to destroy the tumour. Findings – The results obtained show that the five-segment electrode arrangement allows a regular volume for the induced lesion, independently of the different values of applied voltage considered. Originality/value – The presented work introduces a numerical simulation analysis on a modified based-stent electrode previously studied. In this case, the electrode is configured so it can be used as a bipolar electrode, i.e., active and ground electrode are placed in the same device. Besides the results evinced by the obtained results, this kind of electrode avoids eventual skin burns that might occur due to the need of the return electrodes when monopolar electrodes are used.

RF inductor power losses of ferrite-free electrode-less low pressure mercury inductively-coupled discharges excited in closed-loop dielectric tube were studied. The modelling was made within the framework of low pressure inductive discharge transformer model for discharge lamps with tubes of 16, 25 and 38 mm inner diam. filled with the mixture of mercury vapour (7.5×10–3 mm Hg) and argon (0.1, 0.3 and 1.0 mm Hg) at RF frequencies of 1, 7; 3.4 and 5.1 MHz and plasma power of (25–500) W. Discharges were excited with the help of the induction coil of 3, 4 and 6 turns placed along the inner perimeter of the closed-loop tube. It was found that the dependence of coil power losses, Pcoil, on the discharge plasma power, Ppl, had the minimum while Pcoil decreased with RF frequency, tube diameter and coil number of turns. The modelling results were found in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data; quantitative discrepancies are believed to be due skin-effect and RF electric field radial inhomogeneity that were not included in discharge modelling.

Abstract Transdermal Iontophoretic Drug Delivery System (TIDDS) is a non-invasive method of systemic drug delivery that involves by applying a drug formulation to the skin. The drug penetrates through the stratum corneum, epidermis and dermis layers. Once the drug reaches the dermal layer, it is available for systemic absorption via dermal microcirculation. However, clinical testing of new drug developed for the iontophoretic system is a long and complex process. Recently, most of those major pharmaceutical companies have attempted to consider computer-based bio-simulation strategies as a means of generating the data necessary to help make a better decision. In this work, we used computational modelling to investigate the TIDDS behaviour. Our interest is to study the efficacy of drug diffusion through transdermal delivery, including the thermal effect on the skin. We found that drug will be delivered more efficiently if the electrical potential and the position of electrodes are optimum. We analysed the drug diffusion time of the system using 1,3 and 5 mA DC source. In addition, we also modify the electrode distance from 10 mm to 30 mm long and analysed the effect of delivery time and d effect to the skin thermal. We conclude that, a high electrical current, as instance, a 5 mA DC, delivered the drug faster into the skin but increased the skin temperature because of skin joule heating effect. However, a 30 mm electrodes distance setting decreased the skin temperature significantly than the 10 mm distance with more than 9.7 °C under 5 mA DC and 60 minutes of operation. TIDDS enhanced drug delivery compared to oral consumption and might be suitable used for localizing treatments such as chronic disease. This work provides great potential and is useful to efficiently design of iontophoretic drug delivery system including new drugs delivery applications.

We report on the dual mechanical and proximity sensing effect of soft-matter interdigitated (IDE) capacitor sensors, together with its modelling using finite element (FE) simulation to elucidate the sensing mechanism. The IDE capacitor is based on liquid-phase GaInSn alloy (Galinstan) embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfludics channel. The use of liquid-metal as a material for soft sensors allows theoretically infinite deformation without breaking electrical connections. The capacitance sensing is a result of E-field line disturbances from electrode deformation (mechanical effect), as well as floating electrodes in the form of human skin (proximity effect). Using the proximity effect, we show that spatial detection as large as 28 cm can be achieved. As a demonstration of a hybrid electronic system, we show that by integrating the IDE capacitors with a capacitance sensing chip, respiration rate due to a human’s chest motion can be captured, showing potential in its implementation for wearable health-monitoring.

Lightning is a perilous and unavoidable event of nature that presents major deleterious consequences on humans, tall structures, electrical power systems, forests, etc. Though several research studies have been carried out to analyse the sufficiency of a Lightning Protection System (LPS), very few research findings have been reported to assess the extent of risk due to lightning-human interaction in the vicinity of tall structures. This research aims at carrying out detailed modelling and simulation studies of LPS for heritage structure. Several current waveshapes as stipulated in IEC 62305 are modelled appropriately and presented to the electrical equivalent circuit representation of a heritage monument in South India (Brihadisvara Temple) to ascertain the impact of lightning parameters on heritage monuments. In addition, to assess the effectiveness of the earthing system, detailed earthing models during lightning is developed to assess the role played by aspects such as soil resistivity (single and double), earth electrode dimensions, nature of elements in the equivalent circuit, etc. Further, the role of lightning strikes on human due to step and touch potential is ascertained by formulating a lumped electrical equivalent model of human to assess its role and impact on dry and wet skin.

In recent decades, many research efforts have been devoted to developing high-performance stretchable strain sensors due to their potential for application in various emerging wearable sensor systems. This work presents a facile yet highly efficient way of modulating the sensing performance of a thin metal film/conductive composite hybrid piezoresistor-based stretchable strain sensor by simply controlling the metal film thickness. The hybrid strain sensor can be simply fabricated by sputtering a thin platinum (Pt) film onto a silver nanowire (AgNW)/dragon skin (DS) composite substrate prepared via a facile embed-and-transfer process in a reproducible manner. The density of the network-shaped mechanical crack induced in the Pt film tended to decrease with increasing the Pt thickness, thereby leading to a higher gauge factor of the sensor. The fabricated hybrid strain sensor also exhibited a large stretchability of 150% owing to its electrical robustness under strain, based on the unique morphology, formed of the network-shaped Pt crack and AgNW percolation network embedded in the DS matrix. Thanks to the balanced strain-sensing performance of the hybrid strain sensor in conjunction with large stretchability, the device was successfully demonstrated as a wearable human-activity monitoring solution that can monitor a wide range of human motions in real time.

Background: The effects of electric currents flowing through a human body vary from no perceptible to severe tissue injury caused by the electrosurgical spark. Although modern electrodes have been designed to minimize this complication, it was reported that burns have accounted for 70% of the injuries during electro surgery. Some risks of complications depend on a surgeon's knowledge of instruments and safety aspects of technical equipment. The use of alcohol and spirit-based skin preparation solutions brings another risk of burn injuries.Methods: Apart from the experimental methods, computer modelling is shown to be an effective approach to improve the performance of electrosurgical procedure. The benefits of simulation assisted electro surgery include no ethical approval, low cost, safe and the most important removing conditions that may lead to tissue burns. Here, the onset of sparking between the electrosurgical electrodes has been studied by using the multi-component plasma fluid model. Results: It was found that the electrode shape significantly affects the sparking formation. The minimum voltage required for sparking has been achieved for cylinder-cylinder configuration, while for other arrangements breakdown voltages are higher. Electrical sparks do not occur equally in both directions between active and passive electrodes due to electrical asymmetries.Conclusions: This study is dealing with application of multi-component plasma fluid model in simulating sparks produced between electrosurgical electrodes of various shapes, materials and dimensions. Our simulation model offers substantially greater physical fidelity as compared to simulators that use simple geometry. The obtained results are applicable for prevention of potential complications during diathermy procedure.

Abstract Objective Accurate decoding of surface electromyography (sEMG) is pivotal for muscle-to-machine-interfaces (MMI) and their application e.g. rehabilitation therapy. sEMG signals have high inter-subject variability, due to various factors, including skin thickness, body fat percentage, and electrode placement. Deep learning algorithms require long training time and tend to overfit if only few samples are available. In this study, we aim to investigate methods to calibrate deep learning models to a new user when only a limited amount of training data is available. Approach Two methods are commonly used in the literature, subject-specific modeling and transfer learning. In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of transfer learning using weight initialization for recalibration of two different pretrained deep learning models on new subjects data and compare their performance to subject- specific models. We evaluate two models on three publicly available databases (NinaPro Database 2,3 and 4) and compare the performance of both calibration schemes in terms of accuracy, required training data, and calibration time. Main results On average over all settings, our transfer learning approach improves 5 %-points on the pretrained models without fine-tuning, and 12 %-points on the subject-specific models, while being trained for 22% fewer epochs on average. Our results indicate that transfer learning enables faster learning on fewer training samples than user-specific models. Significance To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comparison of subject- specific modeling and transfer learning. These approaches are ubiquitously used in the field of sEMG decoding. But the lack of comparative studies until now made it difficult for scientists to assess appropriate calibration schemes. Our results guide engineers evaluating similar use cases.

Long QT syndrome (LQTS) is characterized by prolonged cardiac repolarization time and increased risk of ventricular arrhythmia. LQTS can be either inherited or induced notably after drugs intake. Mutations in genes encoding cardiac ion channels have been reported to underlie inherited LQTS. In contrast, drug-induced LQTS (diLQTS) most frequently arises from altered function of the hERG channel; the risk of developing diLQTS varies largely between subjects and most people who have life-threatening diLQTS have no known genetic risk factors. We investigated whether the susceptibility to develop diLQTS observed in vivo can be recapitulated in vitro using patient-specific induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology. We collected skin fibroblasts from ten subjects who developed significant diLQTS after administration of Sotalol and/or Erythromycin. Ten other individuals who displayed no changes in QT interval after administration of the same drugs, were selected. iPSC were generated by retroviral delivery of Oct4, Sox2, Nanog and Klf4 in 17 of the 20 individuals. We report preliminary results obtained from iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes (iPSC-CMs) of two subjects. All experiments were performed in a blinded fashion without knowledge of the associated clinical phenotype. Cardiac differentiation of iPSC resulted in the generation of spontaneously beating embryoid bodies. iPSC-CMs showed positive staining for TNNT2, ACTN2 and Cx43. Gene expression analysis confirmed the expression of NKX2.5, MLC2v, MYH6 and MYH7, and of the relevant KCNH2 gene. The two lines had similar basal electrophysiological properties as assessed by measurements of action potential (AP) by patch-clamp technique and extracellular field potentials (FP) using micro-electrode array (MEA). E4031, a classical HERG blocker, significantly prolonged the FP duration (FPD) in a dose-dependent manner in both lines (EC50: 30.19 and 51.57 respectively). When both Sotalol and Erythromicin were used, FPD was prolonged in one of the two samples in a dose-dependent manner (EC50Sotalol: 100; EC50Erythr: 9.64) while drug response was blunted in the other cell line. This study suggests that patient-specific iPSC can be used to model the functional abnormalities observed in acquired diLQTS.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is used to elevate health-related disorders. This technology is now an important therapeutic system for medical science. In this system, the electrical current pulse is applied over the skin through the inner layers via electrodes to activate excitable tissue layers. Activating other excitable tissue layers may cause discomfort. Thus, it is vital to design electrode configuration arrangements to activate the target anatomical layers without affecting the neighboring ones. A device for primary headaches showed mixed results. This may be related to the electrode position that requires higher stimulus current levels to activate target nerve fibers. This may stimulate neighboring nerve fibers which resulted in the discomfort of patients. A feasible solution is to identify the optimal electrode configuration based on the activation function which is the second derivative of the electric potential along an axon. This may guide to estimate of the possibility of action potential generation on the neural tissue layer using a specified electrode arrangement. In this study, the multilayered human head was developed based on MRI data set using pre and post-processing. Then multi-electrode arrangements were developed to examine the possible nerve activation location. Results showed that the nerve fibers were activated at the same location of the trajectory for the anodal and cathodal stimulation. This may be proof that the activation function can be used to define the optimal location of nerve activation. This may lead to lower thresholds for similar therapeutic benefits in transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation with decreased power consumption.

Abstract Objective. The application of cerebellar transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) is limited by the absence of commonly agreed montages and also the presence of unpleasant side effects. We aimed to find the most effective cerebellar tACS montage with minimum side effects (skin sensations and phosphenes). Approach. We first simulated cerebellar tACS with five montages (return electrode on forehead, buccinator, jaw, and neck positions, additionally focal montage with high-definition ring electrodes) to compare induced cerebellar current, then stimulated healthy participants and evaluated side effects for different montages and varying stimulation frequencies. Main results. The simulation revealed a descending order of current density in the cerebellum from forehead to buccinator, jaw, neck and ring montage respectively. Montages inducing higher current intensity in the eyeballs during the simulation resulted in stronger and broader phosphenes during tACS sessions. Strong co-stimulation of the brainstem was observed for the neck. Skin sensations did not differ between montages or frequencies. We propose the jaw montage as an optimal choice for maximizing cerebellar stimulation while minimizing unwanted side effects. Significance. These findings contribute to adopting a standard cerebellar tACS protocol. The combination of computational modelling and experimental data offers improved experimental control, safety, effectiveness, and reproducibility to all brain stimulation practices.

AbstractIn the last years, technological advancements for the analysis of electroencephalography (EEG) recordings have permitted to investigate neural activity and connectivity in the human brain with unprecedented precision and reliability. A crucial element for accurate EEG source reconstruction is the construction of a realistic head model, incorporating information on electrode positions and head tissue distribution. In this paper, we introduce MR-TIM, a toolbox for head tissue modelling from structural magnetic resonance (MR) images. The toolbox consists of three modules: 1) image pre-processing – the raw MR image is denoised and prepared for further analyses; 2) tissue probability mapping – template tissue probability maps (TPMs) in individual space are generated from the MR image; 3) tissue segmentation – information from all the TPMs is integrated such that each voxel in the MR image is assigned to a specific tissue. MR-TIM generates highly realistic 3D masks, five of which are associated with brain structures (brain and cerebellar grey matter, brain and cerebellar white matter, and brainstem) and the remaining seven with other head tissues (cerebrospinal fluid, spongy and compact bones, eyes, muscle, fat and skin). Our validation, conducted on MR images collected in healthy volunteers and patients as well as an MR template image from an open-source repository, demonstrates that MR-TIM is more accurate than alternative approaches for whole-head tissue segmentation. We hope that MR-TIM, by yielding an increased precision in head modelling, will contribute to a more widespread use of EEG as a brain imaging technique.

A long-term stationary experiment was conducted to examine for the purpose nine field crop rotation patterns different in the number of fields (four to six), set of crops, and their succession in crop rotation. The respective shares of legumes, oilseeds, and cereals in the cropping pattern were 17 to 33, 17 to 40, and 50 to 67 %. It has been established that in case of no-till field crop cultivation the economic efficiency of plant production depends on the set of crops and their succession in rotation. The most economically efficient type of crop rotation is the soya-winter wheat-peas-winter wheat-sunflower-corn six-field rotation with two fields of legumes: in this rotation 1 ha of crop rotation area yields 3 850 grain units per ha at a grain unit prime cost of 5.46 roubles; the plant production output return and profitability were 20,888 roubles per ha and 113 %, respectively. The high production profitabilities provided by the soya-winter wheat-sunflower four-field and the soya-winter-wheat-sunflower-corn-winter wheat five-field crop rotation are 108.7 and 106.2 %, respectively. The inclusion of winter wheat in crop rotation for two years in a row reduces the second winter wheat crop yield by 80 to 100 %, which means a certain reduction in the grain unit harvesting rate to 3.48-3.57 thousands per ha of rotation area and cuts the production profitability down to 84.4-92.3 %. Sirotinskiy, DOI: https://doi.org/10.26782/jmcms.spl.10/2020.06.00043 Abstract: This paper is concerned with solving one of the issues of the general problem of designing geophysical equipment for the natural climatic environment of the Arctic. The relevance of the topic has to do with an increased global interest in this region. The paper is aimed at considering the basic principles of developing and the procedure of testing seismic instruments for use at ultralow climatic temperatures. In this paper the indicated issue is considered through the example of a seismic module designed for petroleum and gas exploration by passive seismoacoustic methods. The seismic module is a direct-burial portable unit of around 5 kg in weight, designed to continuously measure and record microseismic triaxial orthogonal (ZNE) noise in a range from 0.1 to 45 Hz during several days in autonomous mode. The functional chart of designing the seismic module was considered, and concrete conclusions were made for choosing the necessary components to meet the ultralow-temperature operational requirements. The conclusions made served for developing appropriate seismic module. In this case, the components and tools used included a SAFT MP 176065 xc low-temperature lithium cell, industrial-spec electronic component parts, a Zhaofeng Geophysical ZF-4.5 Chinese primary electrodynamic seismic sensor, housing seal parts made of frost-resistant silicone materials, and finely dispersed silica gel used as water-retaining sorbent to avoid condensation in the housing. The paper also describes a procedure of low-temperature collation tests at the lab using a New Brunswick Scientific freezing plant. The test results proved the operability of the developed equipment at ultralow temperatures down to -55°C. In addition, tests were conducted at low microseismic noises in the actual Arctic environment. The possibility to detect signals in a range from 1 to 10 Hz at the level close to the NLNM limit (the Peterson model) has been confirmed, which allows monitoring and exploring petroleum and gas deposits by passive methods. As revealed by this study, the suggested approaches are efficient in developing high-precision mobile seismic instruments for use at ultralow climatic temperatures. The solution of the considered instrumentation and methodical issues is of great practical significance as a constituent of the generic problem of Arctic exploration. The article analyzes the results of treatment of patients with excess length of the second metatarsal bones that underwent osteotomy with and without osteosynthesis. The results of treatment of patients who underwent metatarsal shortening due to classical Weil-osteotomy with and without osteosynthesis were analyzed. The first group consisted of 34 patients. They underwent classical Weil osteotomy. The second group included 44 patients in whomosteotomy of the second metatarsal bone were not by the screw. When studying the results of the treatment in the immediate postoperative period, weeks 6, 12, slightly better results were observed in patients of the first group, while one year after surgical treatment the results in both groups were comparable. One year after surgical treatment, there were 2.9% (1 patient) of unsatisfactory results in the first group and 4.5% (2 patients) in the second group. Considering the comparability of the results of treatment in remote postoperative period, the choice of concrete method remains with the operating surgeon. Methods. A prospective 3-year study of 86 healthy dogs (aged 1-7 yrs) of different breeds and of both sexes. Echo homogeneity and echogenicity of the stomach and intestines wall were determined by the method of Silina, T.L., et al. (2010) in absolute values ​​of average brightness levels of ultrasound image pixels using the 8-bit scale with 256 shades of gray. Results. Quantitative echogenicity indicators of the stomach and the small intestine wall in dogs were determined. Based on the numerical values ​​characterizing echogenicity distribution in each layer of a separate structure of the digestive system, the coefficient of gastric echogenicity is determined as 1:2.4:1.1 (mucosa/submucosa/muscle layers, respectively), the coefficient of duodenum and jejunum echogenicity is determined as 1:3.5:2 and that of ileum is 1:1.8:1. Clinical significance. Datieva, DOI: https://doi.org/10.26782/jmcms.spl.10/2020.06.00046 Abstract: The aim of this work was to assess the functional reserves of the body to quantify individual health; adaptation, psychophysiological characteristics of the health quality of medical students in different seasons of the year. When studying the temporal organization of physiological functions, the rhythm parameters of physiological functions were determined, followed by processing the results using the Cosinor Analysis program, which reveals rhythms with an unknown period for unequal observations, evaluates 5 parameters of sinusoidal rhythms (mesor, amplitude, acrophase, period, reliability). The essence of desynchronization is the mismatch of circadian rhythms among themselves or destruction of the rhythms architectonics (instability of acrophases or their disappearance). Desynchronization with respect to the rhythmic structure of the body is of a disregulatory nature, most pronounced in pathological desynchronization. High neurotism, increased anxiety reinforces the tendency to internal desynchronization, which increases with stress. During examination stress, students experience a decrease in the stability of the temporary organization of the biosystem and the tension of adaptive mechanisms develops, which affects attention, mental performance and the quality of adaptation to the educational process. Time is shortened and the amplitude of the “initial minute” decreases, personal and situational anxiety develops, and the level of psychophysiological adaptation decreases. The results of the work are priority because they can be used in assessing quality and level of health. The difference between active and passive qualitative comparison is shown, two triadic models of passive and active comparison and models for comparing two and three objects are described. Triadic comparison models are proposed as an alternative to dyadic comparison models. Comparison allows finding the common and the different; this approach is proposed for the analysis of the nomothetic and ideographic method of obtaining knowledge. The nomothetic method identifies and evaluates the general, while the ideographic method searches for unique in parameters and in combinations of parameters. Triadic comparison is used in systems and methods of argumentation, as well as in the analysis of consistency/inconsistency.
