Streszczenie:
This chapter summarizes muscle structure and physiology, the genesis and adaptions of muscle throughout life, and clinical assessment of muscle disease. The anatomical and molecular structure of muscle tissue is described, as well as the basic function of the neuromuscular junction, the energy metabolism of muscle tissue, and the mechanisms of fatigue. Key elements of embryological myogenesis, the adaptions of muscle to exercise and damage, and physiological ageing are depicted. A summary of the clinical analysis of muscle function including laboratory, electrophysiological, and imaging testing is provided.

Streszczenie:
Skeletal muscle is not only essential for human movement and performance, but is unfortunately also a common site for acute injuries related to physical activity and sports. The influence of exercise on skeletal muscle represents a wide range all the way from (i) physiological adaptation with regard to metabolism, morphology, and contractile properties, through (ii) physiological development of muscle hypertrophy, to (iii) pathological/physiological responses to heavy unaccustomed exercise with associated delayed onset of muscle soreness, and ending with (iv) muscle injury caused by either strain or contusion (and seldom laceration) trauma. In the present chapter we will focus on the muscle responses to acute stimuli that cause muscle injury of minor or larger magnitude, and the ensuing recovery....

Streszczenie:
Chapter 3 explores the three main areas of technical challenge for small-handed pianists: fatigue, power, and reach. Building on the examination of fundamental principles of movement in Chapter 2, this chapter equips readers with the analytical tools to critically evaluate the adaptive strategies discussed later in the book, tools which pianists may then use to develop additional approaches tailored to their own needs. Common maladaptive tendencies are discussed. A lexicon of facilitative techniques follows, delineating important strategies such as timing muscular release, choosing appropriate levers, cultivating alignment, combining basic movements into larger gestures, reducing the amplitude of movements and gestures, maximizing key speed, transmitting force through skeletal structures, using arm impulses, using the arm to navigate distances, using passive spread, and using vertical spans. The chapter concludes with a discussion of boundaries that should be respected.
