Streszczenie:
This research aimed to 1) create a charism model for personnel administration of school under the ‘Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition’ in Thailand, in order to increase the commitment of personnel to the organization, and 2) demonstrate and improve the charism model. The research process was divided into three steps as follows: 1) developing a charism model, 2) demonstrating the model, and 3) enhancing the model. The findings revealed that the charism model for personnel management consisted of two factors. The first factor (charism) included 1) Agape Love, 2) Humility, 3) Altruism, 4) Vision, 5) Trust, 6) Service, and 7) Empowering. The second factor (personnel management) included 1) Planning, Recruitment and Positioning, 2) Promotion, Absence and Evaluation, 3) Performance, 4) Disciplinary Work and History Registration, 5) Code of Professional Ethics, and 6) Other Tasks Assignment. The researcher also developed a charism-based integrated personnel management manual for Saint Emilie school. The demonstration of the results revealed that lecturers and staff were satisfied with personnel management at the highest level. As the researcher considered each variable, the operational aspect had the highest average score, whereas salary, promotion, taking leave and evaluation had the lowest score. The six dimensions of the charism model for improving personnel administration were adjusted accordingly.

Streszczenie:
Purpose Mary Mackillop, the only Australian to have been declared a “saint” by the Roman Catholic Church, co-founded the Institute of the Sisters of St Joseph, a religious congregation established primarily to educate the poor. Prior to this, she taught at a Common School in Portland. While she was there, the headmaster was dismissed. The purpose of this paper is to examine the extent to which the narrative accounts of the dismissal, as provided in the biographies of Mary, are supported by the documentary evidence. Contemporary records of the Board of Education indicate that Mary played a more active role in the dismissal than that suggested by her biographers. Design/methodology/approach Documentary evidence, particularly the records of the Board of Education, has been used to challenge the biographical accounts of Mary Mackillop’s involvement in an incident that occurred while she was a teacher at the Portland Common School. Findings It appears that the biographers, by omitting to consider the evidence available in the records of the Board of Education, have down-played Mary Mackillop’s involvement in the events that led to the dismissal of the head teacher at Portland. Originality/value This paper uses documentary evidence to challenge the account of the Portand incident, as provided in the biographies of Mary Mackillop.

Studying the school readiness is an interesting domain that has attracted the attention of the public and private sectors in education. Researchers have developed some techniques for assessing the readiness of preschool kids to start school. Here we benefit from an integrated approach which combines Data Mining (DM) and social network analysis towards a robust solution. The main objective of this study is to explore the socio-demographic variables (age, gender, parents' education, parents' work status, and class and neighbourhood peers influence), achievement data (Arithmetic Readiness, Cognitive Development, Language Development, Phonological Awareness), and data that may impact school readiness. To achieve this, we propose to apply DM techniques to predict school readiness. Real data on 306 preschool children was used from four different elementary schools: (1) Life school for Creativity and Excellence a private school located in Ramah village, (2) Sisters of Saint Joseph missionary school located in Nazareth, (3) Franciscan missionary school located in Nazareth and (4) Al-Razi public school located in Nazareth, and white-box classification methods, such as induction rules were employed. Experiments attempt to improve their accuracy for predicting which children might fail or dropout by first, using all the available attributes; next, selecting the best attributes; and finally, rebalancing data and using cost sensitive classification. The outcomes have been compared and the models with the best results are shown.

In the horizon, we find the foundresses of the Congregation of the Augustinian Recollect Sisters: Mother Dionisia de Santa María, Mother Cecilia Rosa de Jesús and the Augustinian Recollects of the San Sebastian Church in Manila. The two foundresses were blood sisters who left their hometown in 1719 and traveled to San Sebastian de Calumpang in Manila where the cherished icon of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They found a small house in Bilibid Viejo where they lived a life of seclusion, contemplation, and mortification. Their virtue and piety attracted the Augustinian Recollects of San Sebastian Convent. Not long after the Beaterio de San Sebastian was founded. It was 16 July 1725 when they lived as terciarias and followed the Rule of Saint Augustine under the protection of the Recollect religious of San Sebastian Convent. In 1907, the Recollect Fathers urged the sisters of the Beaterio to open a school for girls, after defraying the construction of the new edifice. Beginning with the founding of Maryknoll, this article discusses how the Sisters changed their view of missions from a top-down to a grassroots approach (influenced by Vatican II as well as by Mother Mary Joseph's view of missions) and illuminates how that change affected the ways in which the Sisters pursued medical missions.

Juan José de Eguiara y Eguren (1696-1763) seems to have been clearly devoted to St. Joseph. In order to show this, the following pages will take a look at his Tratado sobre el Santísimo José, Esposo de la Madre de Dios (which includes two interesting paratexts by his friend, the Jesuit Vicente López), published in volume 1 of Selectae Dissertationes Mexicanae…, a complete treatise on Theology written for his students at the Mexican University. Eguiara´s debts to previous European and Spanish scholarly tradition on Saint Joseph will be pointed out, as well as his personal contributions to this tradition. Finally, a bibliographical review of this New Spain bibliographer and theologian’s homiletic production on Saint Joseph will be made, as well as of the books on Saint Joseph that were printed at his own printing house (Imprenta de la Bibliotheca Mexicana) during Eguiara´s lifetime. Finally, among Eguiara´s works dedicated to Saint Joseph, a manuscript anthology of sermons on the saint written by different European authors is pointed out, and the possibility is suggested that this work may be the one of similar characteristics that has been attributed to Vicente López and which is now considered lost.

The teaching at the Dominican Sisters’ elementary school in Wielowieś (1861-1918) The Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dominic was founded in Wielowieś, Galicia, in 1861. Simultaneously with the foundation of the Congregation, the sisters started their apostolic service of teaching in the school in the village of Wielowieś. At first it was a parochial school, then it became a private elementary school by the monastery. In 1889 it was turned into a public elementary school. The article shows the changes in the school curriculums, which were caused by the transformations of school status (from private to public, and then from two-class to three-class school) and by the revision of the educational law in Galicia. The paper also attempts to depict the methods adopted by the sisters to teach different subjects, including enumeration of the textbooks used in the process of teaching.

After the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe, Pope John Paul II asked Catholics around the world to assist members of the Church who had suffered under the yoke of communist oppression as a result of their commitment to Catholicism. Sr. Margaret Savoie, and Sr. Margaret Nacke, Sisters of St. Joseph, Concordia, Kansas, decided that the experiences of Catholic women in religious communities – “surviving sisters” – was an important story that needed to be documented, preserved, and made available for future generations and researchers. In 2003, Sisters Mary and Margaret began their research, recording the plight of Catholic sisters in eight countries, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and the Ukraine, from the rise of Stalin until the collapse of European communism. Over 200 testimonials now reside at the Paul Bechtold Library at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago under the auspices of the library’s archivist, Dr. Kenneth O’Malley, C.P. , and their work has been made into a national and award-winning documentary film. .

Media coverage and statements by various Catholic spokespersons regarding the case of Terri Schiavo has generated enormous and deeply unfortunate confusion (among Catholics and non-Catholics) regarding Church teaching about the use of life-sustaining treatments. Two weeks ago, for example, I received a letter from the superior of a community of Missionary Sisters of Charity, who operate a hospice here in the United States The Missionary Sisters of Charity are the community founded by Mother Theresa, the 20th Century saint whose primary ministry was to rescue dying Untouch-ables from the streets of Calcutta and bring them into her convent where they were washed, sheltered, fed if they were able to eat, prayed for, and cherished. In other words, the sisters gave these poor souls the gift of a death with dignity. The order Mother Theresa founded has continued this ministry, running hospices in the United States and elsewhere for the homeless, the destitute, those dying of AIDS and poverty and drug addiction, and all those dying alone and otherwise unwanted.

Streszczenie:
This article discourages the implementation and use of the term Black Mozart as a popular descriptor for, arguably, the most influential Black composer, violinist, and fencer in 18th-century France: Joseph Boulogne, the Chevalier de Saint-George. By theorizing the term Black Mozart in the discursive frameworks of Fanon’s Black Skin, White Masks, Sartre’s Black Orpheus, and Ter Ellingson’s Myth of the Noble Savage, I reveal the epistemological and ontological problems that the term presents. I find that, while Black Mozart is a clever way of drawing attention to Saint-George’s music and, subsequently, his life, the term occludes the critical treatment of the Black subject to the point of erasure: Saint-George is replaced by a mythicized inferior of the status quo’s perfect symbol of 18th-century classical music. I conclude that by removing the yoke of Mozart’s influence on the reception of Saint-George, we expose him to the fullness of our critical reasoning and restore to him the name he earned for all his talents, trials, and triumphs.

Streszczenie:
The tradition of celebrating Saint Joseph's Day every March 19 is strong among New Orleanians at large, and especially those New Orleanians of Italian and Sicilian heritage. Altars, elaborate and modest, are erected in churches and in private homes; sesame-sprinkled, almond-flavored, and fig-filled cookies are baked by the thousands. La festa di San Giuseppe (the feast of Saint Joseph) is prepared citywide, always including meatless pasta Milanese and breadcrumb-stuffed artichokes. Lucky dried fava beans are gathered by the faithful and the superstitious, both of whom believe that keeping a lucky bean in a wallet or pocketbook will keep them in good fortune until the following March 19. In this excerpt from Gumbo Tales: Finding My Place at the New Orleans Table, Sara Roahen describes her own experiences with New Orleans' Saint Joseph's Day customs, beginning with the story of Ernest Hansen's final trip to a Saint Joseph altar, just days before his death, and concluding with the Fagot family. Marie Fagot had worked on altars to the saint for fifty consecutive years until Hurricane Katrina and the eventual failure of the federal levee system interrupted her momentum and destroyed her Lakeview neighborhood home. In Marie's story, Roahen finds a microcosm of Katrina-related suffering, and also the inspiration to look ahead.

Streszczenie:
Post-modernity, also referred to as postmodernism or late modernity, is a keyword used to describe contemporary social, cultural and religious changes. The first part of the paper presents the socio-cultural and religious context in which Christian education is provided. A fundamental question was put: can the character of St. Joseph still be an effective role model for the contemporary world in such an adverse context. Papal teachings were used when seeking the answer to this question, with particular focus placed on two documents: Redemptoris custos by John Paul II and Patris corde by Pope Francis. It was pointed out that particularly the latter, owing to its fresh approach and existential sense of its author, can provide guidance on where one should seek the answer to this question. There are no ready solutions concerning the way of talking about St. Joseph, so that Christian education does not become an empty, contentless general moral topos, with no consequence. Christian education, inspired by the character of St. Joseph, is a task to be performed by tutors at all times, especially those who try to present him as a living role model for their pupils.

Maistre's Soirées de Saint-Pétersbourg is modeled on Plato's Laws. Plato and Maistre both demand the political control of natural inquiry, and implement these controls through theodictic conversation. Maistre, following the lead of Plato's legislator, publishes an exemplary conversation about providence between a young man tempted by an atheistic Enlightenment and two older, wiser, and more learned men of affairs. Maistre defends providentialism from materialist interpretations of natural science even as Plato defended it from ancient materialism.

Abstract:This article considers the choices made during the apartheid era by Catholic sisters who were members of one of the largest orders for African women, the Montebello Dominicans, based in KwaZulu-Natal, and one of the smallest orders, the Companions of Saint Angela, based in Soweto, the sprawling African township to the southwest of Johannesburg. The Montebellos took an apolitical stance and embraced “silence,” but they could not avoid the political tensions that defined KwaZulu-Natal. The Companions became activists, whose “disobedience” brought them into direct confrontation with the state. History, region, ethnicity, and timing help explain what it meant for African women religious to be apolitical, and what it meant to be politicized, in the context of state repression so effective that every action could be interpreted as a political act.
