Streszczenie:
Software reuse may only be put into practice if we make available matching mechanisms between user needs and reusable components. The matching mechanisms should also be powerful enough to allow transformations of the user components that, while maintaining correctness, increase the possibilities of use of repository components by the user. In this paper we propose to use the mathematical framework of category theory to develop matching mechanisms for single-sort algebraic specifications that would allow the automatic retrieval and data adaptation of correct programs. We identify two types of specification matching, isomorphic and composite.

Abstract User-defined mutagenic libraries are fundamental for applied protein engineering workflows. Here we show that unamplified oligo pools can be used to prepare site saturation mutagenesis libraries from plasmid DNA with near-complete coverage of desired mutations and few off-target mutations. We find that oligo pools yield higher quality libraries when compared to individually synthesized degenerate oligos. We also show that multiple libraries can be multiplexed into a single oligo pool, making preparation of multiple libraries less expensive and more convenient. We provide software for automatic oligo pool design that can generate mutagenic oligos for saturating or focused libraries.

We describe a new software package for the data reduction of single crystal neutron diffraction using large 2D detectors. The software consists of a graphical user interface from which the user can visualize, interact with and process the data. The data reduction is achieved by sequentially executing a series of programs designed for performing the following tasks: peak detection, indexing, refinement of the orientation matrix and motor offsets, and integration. The graphical tools of the software allow visualization of and interaction with the data in two and three dimensions, both in direct and reciprocal spaces. They make it easy to validate the different steps of the data reduction and will be of great help in the treatment of complex problems involving incommensurate structures, twins or diffuse scattering.

Streszczenie:
Research software is currently used by a large number of scientists on a daily basis, and everything indicates that this trend will continue to increase in the future. Most of this scientific software is very often developed by the researchers themselves, who usually make it available to the rest of the scientific community. Although the relationship between science and software is unquestionably useful, it is not always successful. Some of the critical problems that scientists face include a lack of training in software development, a shortage of time and resources, or difficulty in effectively cooperating with other colleagues. Additional challenges arise in the context of increasingly common cross-cutting and multidisciplinary research. This often results in the developed software and code being slow, not reusable, lacks visibility and dissemination, and in the worst cases it is defective and unreliable. Therefore, a multidisciplinary framework is needed to meet the demands of both scientists and software engineers and handle the situation successfully. However, a multidisciplinary team is not always sufficient to solve this problem, and it is necessary to have links between scientists and developers: software engineers with a solid scientific background. This paper presents the approach used in the framework of the PROTOCOL project, and more particularly in the development of its applied software, in which a tool for the characterization of climate agents has been developed. The main guidelines of the development process include, among others, modularity, distributed control version, unit testing, profiling, inline documentation and the use of best practices and tools.

People rely on off-the-shelf commercial single-user software systems in their daily lives and work to perform single-user tasks. People also need groupware systems to perform collaborative or group tasks. The goal of this thesis work is to develop innovative techniques for building computer applications that combine conventional single-user functionalities with advanced collaboration capabilities to effectively support people's individual and group work. This thesis work contributes an innovative Transparent Adaptation (TA) approach and associated supporting techniques that can be used to convert existing or new single-user applications into real-time multi-user collaborative versions without changing their source code. The transparently adapted collaborative systems not only support unconstrained collaboration and other collaboration features that were previously seen only in advanced groupware research prototypes, but also maintain the conventional functionalities and interface features that were previously seen only in commercial off-the-shelf single-user applications. Major technical contributions of the TA approach include techniques for adapting the single-user application programming interface to the data and operation models of the underlying generic collaboration technique and a generic system architecture for collaborative systems. The Operation Transformation (OT) technique has been chosen as the underlying collaboration technique for the TA approach due to its capability of supporting unconstrained collaboration and application independence. This thesis work has also made important contributions to OT by extending OT from supporting only collaborative plain text editing to supporting collaboration on complex data structures and comprehensive functionalities. To support the adaptation of complex data and operation models in a range of applications, this thesis work has contributed a package of advanced adaptation techniques for collaborative table editing and graphic object grouping. These techniques have not only increased the capability of TA, but have also advanced the state-of-the-art of collaborative editing techniques. To facilitate natural and smooth collaboration, this thesis work has contributed a multi-functional workspace awareness framework which is able to reduce the effort for developing workspace awareness features, and to be extended to support new workspace awareness features. Most importantly, this framework is able to deliver correct and precise workspace awareness information in the face of dynamic content and view changes in TA-based systems, which is an innovative feature unavailable in existing techniques. The TA approach and supporting techniques were developed and tested in the process of transparently converting two commercial off-the-shelf single-user applications - Microsoft Word and PowerPoint - into real-time collaborative applications, called CoWord and CoPowerPoint, respectively. CoWord and CoPowerPoint not only retain the functionalities and the 'look-and-feel' of their single-user counterparts, but also provide advanced multi-user collaboration capabilities for supporting multiple interaction paradigms, ranging from concurrent and free interaction to sequential and synchronized interaction, and for supporting detailed workspace awareness, including multi-user tele-pointers and radar views. The TA-based collaborative system architecture and the generic collaboration engine software component developed from this work can be reused in adapting a wide range of single-user applications.

As the repetitive processes in the manufacturing community are being automated to reduce operating cost, the satellite tracking station (being for the most part a repetitive operation) can also reduce operating cost by automation. A conventional satellite tracking station requires personnel to setup, monitor, and adjust a variety of equipment, coordinate data collection, and archive collected data. By automating, the above duties in addition to managing the station can be done through a single-point user interface. This paper presents the methods used to design the user-interface software including graphical user interface (GUI) types of hardware I/O for data acquisition and control, and remote control.

Competencer wants to be sure users experience their web product as it was designed. With the help of tools for end-to-end user testing, interactions based on what a user would do is simulated to test potential situations. This thesis work is targeting four areas of end-to-end user testing with a major focus on making it automatic. A study is conducted on test case methods to gain an understanding of how to approach writing tests. A coverage tool is researched and built to present a measure of what is being tested of the product. To ease the use for developers a solution for continuous integration is looked at. To make tests more automatic a way to build mocks through automation is implemented. These areas combined with the background of Competencers application architecture creates a foundation for replacing manual testing sessions with automatic ones.

Using a Single-Human Multiple-Robot System (SHMRS) to deploy rescue robots in Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) can induce high levels of cognitive workload and poor situation awareness. Yet, the provision of autonomous coordination between robots to alleviate cognitive workload and promote situation awareness must be made with careful management of limited robot computational and communication resources. Therefore, a technique for autonomous coordination using a hierarchically structured collective of robots has been devised to address these concerns. The technique calls for an Apex robot to perform most of the computation required for coordination, allowing Subordinate robots to be simpler computationally and to communicate with only the Apex robot instead of with many robots. This method has been integrated into a physical implementation of the SHMRS. As such, this chapter also presents practical components of the SHMRS including the robots used, the control station, and the graphical user interface.

This descriptive single case study examines the process and implications of the self-determined adoption of an internet-based meeting system in a global company. Self-determination theory and structuration theory are used as theoretical lenses to understand the adoption and use of an ICT system. The data were collected using qualitative semi-structured interviews with eleven system users and analyzed using a content analysis approach. The research shows that the self-determined adoption of ICT systems has benefits like user motivation and satisfaction. Problems in such adoption relate to users’ experiencing uncertainty regarding the organizational legitimization of the system and support for its use. Employees and organizations are likely to benefit from self-determined adoption because it promotes employees’ motivation and initiative-taking. However, a shared understanding of self-determination and organizational support for it are required.

Streszczenie:
This chapter discusses basic software that should be found in a typical cybercafé setup. ‘Software requirements’ are broadly divided into requirements for the server side and client side of the network. As a commercial venture, it is of great importance that only necessary software be found installed in a cybercafé, to meet the café user’s need. Starting with an introduction, a general overview of the café user’s needs are set forth, thereby leading to the division into two broad areas: server and client side. An outline of the chapter is given. The background section gives some details on some basic terminologies (server, client, operating system, etc.) that a cybercafé user/prospective operator might want to get acquainted with. Software requirements for the server side of the café network are discussed first; general features of timing softwares, notes on Internet security, viruses, and spyware. As the café server is a very important element in café management, it is necessary that the server is not overwhelmed by unnecessary tasks thereby leading to a generally slow network. Software for the client side of the café network is discussed next with emphasis on basic software applications often used/requested by café users. Examples of such are word processing applications and graphics viewing software. Since a lot of computer literate people are familiar with the Windows operating system, all software discussed for client use derives from such a perspective. Some security issues necessary for maintaining crisp client computers are also discussed. Due to lack of in-depth knowledge about information security among internet users, the future trends section discusses the applicability of the personal Internet communicator in the Nigerian environment, because of its portability and built in security. Other possible trends in security and cyber-crime are also discussed. The chapter ends with a note that café users will continue to demand faster Internet speeds, and therefore operators must be on the search for latest software to meet their needs, latest security software to keep their café network always clean and secure. Future research directions include software development research to allow café users modify or design their desktops to their own taste while in the café. Complete café solution software is also proposed to cater for everything from operating systems to end-user applications which can be installed once, and from a single source.Literature used for this chapter is sourced mainly from the Internet, and from personal experience of the author, as there are not literatures dealing with ‘cybercafé software’ on a specific note. A whole lot of software are been used, and could be used in a café. This depends actually on general client’s requirements and/or the operator’s amount of know-how /preferences which may vary across different environments.

The customization of Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) is expensive throughout its lifecycle, especially across an enterprise-wide distributed application environment. The authors' ongoing development of a temporal meta-data framework for EIS applications seeks to minimize these issues with the application model supporting the capability for end users to define their own supplemental or alternate application logic as what they term Variant Logic (VL). VL can be applied to any existing model object, defined by any authorized user, through modeling rather than coding, then executed by any user as an alternative to the original application logic. VL is also preserved during automated application updates and can also interoperate directly between similar model-based execution instances within a distributed execution environment, readily sharing the alternate logic segments. The authors also present an enhanced pre-processing architecture that optimizes the execution of Logic Variants to the same execution order of single path model logic.

Streszczenie:
Recently, many researchers focus on studies of remote robot operation with force feedback. By using force feedback, since users can touch remote objects and feel the shape, weight, and softness of each object, the efficiency and accuracy of operation can be largely improved. However, when the haptic information such as force and/or position information is transmitted over a QoS (Quality of Service) non-guaranteed network like the Internet, QoE (Quality of Experience) and stability may seriously deteriorate. Therefore, it is important to carry out QoS control and stabilization control together to solve the problems. In this chapter, we mainly focus on QoS control. We also introduce our remote robot system with force feedback which we constructed to study QoS control and stabilization control by experiment. In the system, a user operates a remote industrial robot with a force sensor by using a local haptic interface device while monitoring the robot operation by a video camera. We handle two types of operation; operation with a single remote robot system and that between two remote robot systems. We explain several types of QoS control which we have proposed so far for remote robot operation with force feedback. Finally, we discuss the challenges and future directions of QoS control in remote robot operation with force feedback.

The multiuser MIMO environment enables the communication between a base-station and multiple users with several antennas. In such a scenario, the use of precoding techniques is required in order to detect the signal at the users' terminals without any cooperation between them. This contribution presents various designs and hardware implementations of a high-capacity precoder based on vector perturbation. To this aim, three tree-search techniques and their associated user-ordering schemes are investigated in this chapter: the well-known K-Best precoder, the fixed-complexity Fixed Sphere Encoder (FSE), and the variable complexity Single Best-Node Expansion (SBE). All of the aforementioned techniques aim at finding the most suitable perturbation vector within an infinite lattice without the high computational complexity of an exhaustive search.

Current display energy management technologies ignore the attention of the PC user and therefore may either switch the display off when the user looks at the screen or lose energy by keeping the display on when nobody looks at it. This chapter discusses a new display energy management technology and outlines its implementation in a personal computer system. Unlike existing technologies, which “sense” a PC user through keyboard and/or mouse or the other sensors, this technology “watches” the user through a single camera or CMOS vision sensor. The technology tracks the user’s eyes, keeping display active only if the user looks at its screen. Otherwise, it dims the display down or even switches it off to save energy. The authors implemented the technology in software and hardware and present the results of their experimental evaluation.

In today’s world, digital technology and smartphones have become a part of our everyday lives. Smartphones are one of the most advance forms of digital technology that can be viewed as assistive technology for disabled, including for individual with a visual loss. However, they are often not considered as assistive technology for visual impairment and blind, especially in low middle-income countries. There have been a lot of development in the mobile technology that incorporates computer technology, including electronic information, communication technology as well as touch-screen accessibility. Such an advancement in smart technology of mobile devices leads to the transformation of the interface technique from visual smartphones interaction into a truly eyes-free means interaction by using other body senses, such as haptic, gesture, and sound, etc. These innovative accessible features and applications enhance the accessibility of smartphones significantly to individuals with visual impairment. There are many built-in accessible features and third-party accessible applications that enable to access many useful information and contents in the smartphones. Such aesthetic technology facilitates in performing daily activities, independent functioning, movement, social inclusion and participation, educational activities, accessing information of today’s digital society, sighted help, and finally helps to improve the quality of life. Therefore, these smart technologies make smartphones to serve as assistive technology for people with visual impairment and blindness. The smartphones are visually and physically demanding, and are ubiquitous any time and any place, and user can carry it at everywhere. They are universally design, so less social stigma to the users and less discomfort when using it. To view smartphones as assistive technology universally, healthcare providers, caregivers or rehabilitation professionals need to be informed, and make aware of the beneficial aspect of smartphones and its accessibility. Finally, engineers and developers are continuously fostering to develop more innovative and readily accessible apps for visual impairment. Since single app does not fit all purposes for visual impairment and blind, there is a potential need of developing clinical guidelines on the use of such accessible apps or features that will help to recommend appropriately for various types of functions.

The user interface and supervisory control subsystem (UISC) of the W. M. Keck Observatory Adaptive Optics (AO) system serves three main purposes. First, it is the single point of control for the AO system, the wavefront controller subsystem, the optics bench subsystem and the laser subsystem. Second, it manages the coordination and supervision of the AO subsystems to provide a user-friendly facility with a high degree of automation. Third, it interacts with the other observatory systems as needed. The UISC is primarily a software system. The critical design of this subsystem is currently under way.

Streszczenie:
A single platform D&A (Design & Analysis) tool is outlined in this paper that allows a user, through a single GUI (Graphical User Interface), to create a turbine rotor fixing as well as analyze the structural integrity of the fixing. This is done through the integration of CAD (Computer Aided Design) and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) software running in batch mode, driven by the GUI. This SPIE (Single Platform Integration Environment) captures the strength of CAD software to create a fully parameterized fixing that is able to model legacy, current designs and provides flexibility to design fixings not yet conceived. Using the automated use of FEA software through a secure and reliable gateway, stress analysis can be performed and the results displayed back to the user through the GUI. This tool provides a significant increase in quality and time savings to design a fixing when compared to the previous design methodologies. What used to take hours to design and analyze through the use of isolated specialist built and owned tools with little communication between them and non-ideal data management, now takes minutes; a reduction of up to 10 fold in the time taken.

Streszczenie:
Abstract Software with a user-friendly interface is presented for integrating energy storage and renewable energy sources with co-generation and tri-generation (CHP) systems. This simulation provides a first level screening of CHP systems and determines the effects of including renewable energy or storage systems. The inputs consist of the application’s electric load and thermal load as well as the parameters for the power producing devices, back up boilers/furnaces, vapor compression refrigeration COP and the generator and inverter efficiency. The output is the energy utilization factor (EUF), the rates of carbon dioxide production and entropy production. The simulation is based on using the thermal load to power ratio, HLRP, as a basic scaling parameter and the ratio of the cooling to total thermal load, CHR. A single design point investigation or continuous load information as well as the renewable energy output and energy storage data is controlled by the user. A dashboard report and an excel format is provided to allow the user to perform their own detail summary of the calculated results. Results comparing the performance of a CHP plant for different applications are provided. As expected, the CHP device outperforms the traditional means producing electricity.

Streszczenie:
When naval architects design a new yacht or ship, they must use many separate programs to design, analyze, and create the production drawings. These separate programs are most likely from different vendors using noncompatible data formats. The translation process between all these data formats can take many non-productive hours. In addition, any changes to the design often affect many separate drawings and software programs that must be changed independently GtkCAD is a new program that attempts to solve many of these problems by integrating these many individual programs into a program suite with a single user interface and a common data format. GtkCAD's modular design allows the user to load plug-in modules at runtime to add the functionality needed for the task at hand. The modular design also allows the user to customize GtkCAD to suit their particular needs at any given time. For example the hydrostatics program, used by naval architects, may not be very useful to civil engineers. This potential cost savings feature allows a customer to custom-build a system based upon their needs. Linux is a true multi-user Operating System, and GtkCAD is designed to take advantage of this by allowing multiple engineers to use a single binary copy of the program simultaneously. The use of shared libraries lowers the memory footprint by allowing multiple users of the program to share a single copy of the library, and also saves time during software upgrades. The use of a SQL database also allows controlled access of the data by several engineers simultaneously, remotely if necessary. GtkCAD is being developed using the Open Source development model. With this model groups of diverse software developers work on a common software project, often volunteering their time. Anybody is allowed to contribute to the project. In return, the software is freely distributed to the end user with little restrictions on its use, modification, or redistribution.

Streszczenie:
Software packages with targeted calibration and maintenance functionality have long been incorporated to track calibration, maintenance and asset management for IM&TE in regulated environments with an ever-increasing list of functionality to meet specific needs of the end-user group. As corporations move towards implementations of major ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software applications, resident calibration functionality ´modules’ are increasingly mandated to metrology organizations, often without user acceptance, with corporate focus on efficiency of implementing a single solution at the cost functionality that falls short of specific metrology user requirements. API (Application Programming Interface, AKA, Integration) is a viable option to leverage the desired functionality between two or more systems’ data. Integration is a user-defined interaction (to the field-level) so that key information can be ´pushed’ or ´pulled’ to and from target and source software packages. This paper discusses the strategy of justifying and incorporating integration between an ERP (or other software systems) and desired CMMS software (Calibration/Maintenance Management System), its architecture overview and common validation plans to satisfy corporate quality and IT organizations in order to maximize compliance and efficiency in the metrology department
