Streszczenie:
Abstract: This study proposes a new topology for a single-stage 1-ph inverter used in grid-connected solar PV systems. By using this topology, the need for a DC-DC converter is eliminated, which leads to higher efficiency and lower cost. The inverter is capable of operating in three different modes based on input voltage and grid voltage conditions. A control algorithm determines these conditions. Results from simulations and experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed topology in terms of efficiency, power quality, and performance under various operating conditions. This new topology shows promise for creating cost-effective and high-performing grid-connected solar PV systems.

Streszczenie:
Recently, the development of integrated inverters for photovoltaic systems has been widely performed to reduce overall system size, costs, and losses. Thus, integrated inverters have emerged as a prominent solution for replacing two-stage power conversion composed of a step-up converter and a voltage source inverter. Thereby, this paper proposes an integrated inverter topology for single-phase grid-tied photovoltaic systems. The proposed power converter, called a Single-Phase Integrated Zeta Inverter (SP-IZI), can boost the input voltage and inject a sinusoidal and regulated current into the mains with low harmonic distortion. The SP-IZI is based on integrating modified DC-DC Zeta converters, designed and controlled to operate in a discontinuous conduction mode, and presents similarities with the Modified Zeta Inverter (MZI). In this way, this paper compares the main parameters of both topologies and provides a complete study of the SP-IZI, involving both quantitative and qualitative studies as well as a small signals analysis. The feasibility and functionality of the proposed SP-IZI inverter are presented and evaluated through experimental results, which demonstrate that the SP-IZI presents the following advantages compared to the MZI: (i) the voltage in coupling capacitors is 13% lower; (ii) voltage stresses in switches and diodes are 40% lower; and (iii) static gain is similar to the traditional Zeta converter.

The zeta inverter has been used for single-phase grid-tied applications. For its use of energy storage systems, this paper proposes the bidirectional operation scheme of the grid-tied zeta inverter. A shoot-through switching state is introduced, providing reliable bidirectional operation modes. A shoot-through duty cycle is utilized for the bidirectional grid current control of the inverter. The grid current is bidirectionally controlled by the shoot-through duty cycle, which enables the inverter to operate with seamless change of operation modes. Over the state-of-the art techniques using flyback and Cuk inverter topologies, the grid-tied zeta inverter using the proposed operation scheme provides advantages of high efficiency, low cost, and high reliability. The operation principle is presented by describing the operation mode and control method for the grid-tied zeta inverter. A 500 W prototype has been built and tested to verify its operation principle.

Streszczenie:
Grid-connected inverters in renewable energy systems must provide high-quality power to the grid according to regulatory standards such as the IEEE 1547. To provide high-quality current control when the inverter is connected to a distorted grid, the frequency and phase information of the fundamental harmonic of the grid should be accurately obtained. This paper examines controller design for a single-phase inverter when there is distortion in the grid voltage. The control structure is designed to enhance the quality of the injected current into the grid. To this end, a frequency-locked loop (FLL) sinusoidal tracking controller which is able to reject the grid harmonics is proposed. Thus, the contribution of this paper is a new frequency-locked loop structure with adaptive notch filters that can provide accurate estimation of grid phase and frequency and improve the performance of single-phase inverters working under harmonic distortion. We also present an explanation of how the proposed adaptive nonlinear scheme can be discretized for digital implementation on a microcontroller. Experimental and simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed controller in eliminating distortion and enhancing the quality of the produced power.

Streszczenie:
Energy harvesting from renewable energy sources is trending in the world due to inventions in modern technology. This paper proposes a grid-tied single-phase modified W-type 81-level inverter. Inverter design equations to calculate various parameters, such as the number of voltage levels and the number of DC power sources, along with the feedback controller equations, are developed to integrate the proposed topology with an electric power grid. The modeling of the control system for the proposed topology is carried out in the synchronously rotating reference frame for single-phase systems. The PWM generation part of the proposed inverter system makes use of the binary search nearest level algorithm to efficiently track the grid voltage signal. The proposed system integrates the inverter with the grid without the need for an output filter. The efficiency analysis shows that the proposed system delivers active and reactive power to the grid with an efficiency of around 90% and a THD of 1.04%. The voltage and current waveforms for the dynamic active and reactive power flow reveal that the proposed system exhibits a good transient and steady-state response. The overall system is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and the results are verified using a hardware implementation of the prototype circuit.

With the increasing fears of the impacts of the high penetration rates of Photovoltaic (PV) systems, a technical study about their effects on the power quality of the utility grid is required. Since such study requires a complete modeling of the PV system in an electromagnetic transient software environment, for that MATLAB was chosen. This paper investigates a grid-tied PV system that is prepared in MATLAB. The model consists of PV array, DC link capacitor, DC-DC boost converter, single phase hysteresis current control inverter, AC inductive filter and a utility grid equivalent model. The paper starts with choosing MATLAB as the simulation environment and then by investigating the tasks of the different blocks of the grid-tied PV system model. It has also undertaken the various effects of variable atmospheric conditions (irradiation and temperature) on the performance of the different components in the model. DC-DC converter and inverter in this model use PWM and SPWM switching techniques, respectively. Finally, total harmonic distortion analysis on the inverter output current at PCC was applied and the values obtained were compared with the limits specified by the regulating standards such as IEEE Std 519-1992.This paper presents an overview of the matrix converter and its modulation techniques with application. Matrix converter is one of the most interesting members of power converter family; provide direct AC-AC conversion.

Streszczenie:
Low power grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) generation systems increasingly use transformerless inverters. The elimination of the transformer allows smaller, lighter and cheaper systems, and improves the total efficiency. However, a leakage current may appear, flowing from the grid to the PV panels through the existing parasitic capacitance between them, since there is no galvanic isolation. As a result, electromagnetic interferences and security issues arise. This paper presents a novel transformerless single-phase Current Source Inverter (CSI) topology with a reduced inductor, compared to conventional CSIs. This topology directly connects the neutral line of the grid to the negative terminal of the PV system, referred as common mode configuration, eliminating this way, theoretically, the possibility of any leakage current through this terminal. The switches control is based on a hysteresis current controller together with a combinational logic circuitry and it is implemented in a digital platform based on National Instruments Technology. Results that validate the proposal, based on both simulations and tests of a low voltage low power prototype, are presented.

Streszczenie:
The uses of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters are increasing day by day due to the scarcity of fossil fuels such as coal and gas. On the other hand, due to their superior efficiency, lower cost, smaller size, and lighter weight when compared to inverters with transformers, transformerless inverters for low-voltage single-phase grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) systems have recently attracted more interest. However, there are some specific challenges, especially leakage current issues, which must be adequately addressed to ensure the safety standards of the grid codes. A variety of topologies has been presented in the literature to eliminate the leakage current using the decoupling or clamping technique. However, choosing an appropriate topology after comparison is challenging because each topology has a unique set of parameters. In this paper, the authors have selected a common set of parameters and simulated all the selected eighteen well-known topologies in MATLAB/Simulink to fairly analyze and compare their common mode characteristics and other output parameters. In addition, the power loss distribution of every switch of each of the eighteen topologies was calculated and presented to better understand the insight of the topologies.

Streszczenie:
Central-type photovoltaic (PV) inverters are used in most large-scale standalone and grid-tied PV applications due to the inverter’s high efficiency and low-cost per kW generated. The perturbation and observation (P&O) and incremental conductance (IncCond) have become the most common techniques for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) strategies of PV/wind generation systems. Typically, the MPPT technique is applied in a two-stage operation; the first stage tracks the MPP and boosts the PV voltage to a certain level that complies with grid voltage, whereas the second stage represents the inversion stage that ties the PV system to the grid. Therefore, these common configurations increase the system size and cost as well as reduce its overall footprint. As a result, this paper applies two IncCond MPPT techniques on a proposed single-stage three-phase differential-flyback inverter (DFI). In addition, the three-phase DFI is analyzed for grid current negative-sequence harmonic compensation (NSHC). The proposed system efficiently provides a MPPT of the PV system and voltage boosting property of the DC-AC inverter in a single-stage operation. Moreover, the MPPT technique has been applied through the DFI using the conventional and modified IncCond tracking strategies. Furthermore, the system is validated for the grid-tied operation with the negative-sequence harmonic compensation strategy using computer-based simulation and is tested under uniform, step-change, as well as fast-changing irradiance profiles. The average efficiencies of the proposed system, considering the conventional and modified IncCond MPPT techniques, are 94.16% and 96.4% with tracking responses of 0.062 and 0.035 s and maximum overshoot of 46.15% and 15.38%, respectively.

Streszczenie:
DC to AC inverters are the well-known and improved in various kinds photovoltaic (PV) and gird tied systems. However, these inverters are require interfacing transformers to be synchronized with the grid-connected system. Therefore, the system is bulky and not economy. The transformerless inverter (TLI) topologies and its grid interface techniques are increasingly engrossed for the benefit of high efficiency, reliability, and low cost. The main concern in the TL inverters is common mode voltage (CMV), which causes the switching-frequency leakage current, grid interface concerns and exaggerates the EMI problems. The single-phase inverter two-level topologies are well developed with additional switches and components for eliminating the CMV. Multilevel inverters (MLIs) based grid connected transformerless inverter topology is being researched to avail additional benefits from MLI, even through that are trust topologies presented in the literature. With the above aim, this paper has proposed three -phase three-level T type NP-MLI (TNP-MLI) topology with transformerless PV grid connected proficiency. The CM leakage current should handle over mitigating CMV through removing unwanted switching events in the inverter pulse width modulation (PWM). This paper is proposes PV connected T type NP-MLI interface with three-phase grid connected system with the help of improved space vector modulation (SVM) technique to mitigate the CM leakage current to overcome the above said requests on the PV tied TL grid connected system. This proposed the SVM technique to mitigate the CM leakage current by selecting only mediums, and zero vectors with suitable current control method in order to maintain the inverter current and grid interface requirements. The proposed PV tied TNP-MLI offering higher efficiency, lower breakdown voltage on the devices, smaller THD of output voltage, good reliability, and long life span. The paper also investigated the CM leakage currents envisage and behavior for the three-phase MLI through the inverter switching function, which is not discussed before. The proposed SVM on TL-TNP-MLI offers the reliable PV grid interface with very low switching-frequency leakage current (200mA) for all the PV and inverter operation conditions. The feasibility and effectiveness of the TLI and its control strategy is confirmed through the MATLAB/Simulink simulation model directly as compared with 2kW roof top PV plant connected TL-TNP-MLI experimentation, showing good accordance with theoretical investigation. The simulation and experimental results are demonstrated and presented in the good stability of steady state and dynamics performances. The proposed inverter reduces the cost of grid interface transformer, harmonics filter, and CMV suppressions choke.

Streszczenie:
Distributed generation systems, based on renewable energy sources, are typically connected to the main grid by a voltage-source inverter with a low-pass filter. The need for improved efficiency led to the use of third order low-pass filters, such as the LCL configuration, which has resonant behavior. In order to meet energy quality requirements and ensure the systems stability it is necessary to suppress the LCL filters resonance through damping techniques. Therefore, this paper presents an overview of some damping strategies found in literature and its design procedure, applied to a simulated single-phase grid-tied inverter. The comparison of each presented damping methodology characteristics is described, with analysis of advantages and drawbacks for each case.

Streszczenie:
Three-phase, four-wire split capacitor inverters are currently employed in many applications, such as photovoltaic systems, battery chargers for electric vehicles, active power filters, and, in general, in all grid-tied applications that deal with possible grid voltage and/or current unbalances. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of the capacitor-switching voltage ripple and dc-link switching voltage ripple for the three-phase, four-wire, split capacitor inverters. Specifically, analytical formulations of the peak-to-peak and rms values of the voltage ripples are originally pointed out in this paper and determined in the case of balanced three-phase and unbalanced (two-phase and single-phase) output (ac) currents. The obtained results can help in designing the considered inverter and sizing of the dc-link capacitors. Reference is made to the sinusoidal PWM modulation and sinusoidal three-phase output currents with an almost unity power factor, representing a grid-connected application. Extensive numerical simulations have been carried out to thoroughly verify all the analytical developments presented in this paper. Furthermore, some experimental tests, having balanced output currents on the ac side, have been accomplished, validating numerical simulations and analytical developments.

It is expected that the future PV systems connected to the low-voltage grid will be more active with functionalities of low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) and the grid support capability, which is not the case today. In this paper, the operation principle is demonstrated for a single-phase grid-connected PV system in a low-voltage ride-through operation in order to map future challenges. The system is verified by simulations and experiments. Test results show that the proposed power control method is effective and the single-phase PV inverters connected to low-voltage networks are ready to provide grid support and ride-through voltage fault capability with a satisfactory performance based on the grid requirements for three-phase renewable energy systems.

Day to day there is an increase in installations of new Solar Photovoltaic Power plants (SPVPP’s) which directly reflects the grid. As the SPVPP’s output power is fluctuating in nature, which is directly injected to the utility grid faces the challenges like overloading. Therefore, to overcome the overloading situations of grid, its infrastructure should be replaced by higher ratings which will increase the system cost. Due to this there is a need to limit the grid injected power from SPVPP’s to overcome the overloading situations. In this article a Constant power injection (CPI) algorithm is used to control the feed in power to grid as per grid regulations. Based on the instantaneous SPVPP’s output power and power limiting value this strategy will controls the output power by switching between the incremental conductance maximum power point tracking (InC-MPPT) algorithm and CPI algorithm. The proposed InC-CPI algorithm is applied to the single phase two-stage (SPTS) systems with the working region is on the left side of maximum power point (MPP) for maintaining the system to be in stable conditions. In this article the InC-CPI and the perturb and observe (P&O)-CPI algorithms were compared, and results were analyzed. The proposed control algorithm is designed using Matlab/Simulink and the results taken for both clear and cloudy days with wide varying climatic conditions.

Introduction. Solar photovoltaic system is one of the most essential and demanding renewable energy source in the current days, due to the benefits of high efficiency, reduced cost, no pollution, and environment friendly characteristics. Here, the maximum power point tracking controller has been implemented for obtaining an extreme power from the photovoltaic array. For this purpose, there are different controller and converter strategies have been deployed in the conventional works. It includes perturb and observation, incremental conductance, fuzzy logic systems, and hill climbing, and these techniques intend to extract the high amount of power from the solar systems under different climatic conditions. Still, it limits with the issues like increased design complexity, high cost consumption, high harmonics, and increased time consumption. The goal of this work is to deploy an improved controlling and converter topologies to regulate the output voltage and power fed to the single phase grid systems. The novelty of the work aims to develop an enhanced fuzzy logic controller based maximum power point tracking mechanism with the boost DC-DC converter topology for a single phase grid tied photovoltaic systems. Practical value. Also, the higher order harmonics suppression and unbalanced current elimination are handled by the use of LCL filtering technique, which efficiently reduces the harmonics in the output of inverter voltage and current. Moreover, it helps to obtain the reduced total harmonics distortion value with improved accuracy and efficiency. Results. There are different performance indicators have been evaluated for validating the proposed enhanced fuzzy logic controller–maximum power point tracking controlling technique. Moreover, the obtained results are compared with some of the conventional controlling algorithms for proving the betterment of the proposed work.

This paper deals with power injection on single phase grid connected inverter. The simple method is introduced to understand the concept of grid connected systems. A phase Lock Loop (PLL) method estimates the phase-angle of grid system. The output of PLL is used to defines Iref , and the current of inverter becomes a feedback (IL). Both current are derived to produce PWM using current mode controller method. As long as the grid system on fault condition like voltage distortion, therefore the single-phase inverter that connected into the grid should change the role and keep stabilization. The voltages sag and swell are the possible conditions that occurred on a power system. Voltage Sag is an event where the line voltage decreases from the nominal line-voltage for a short period of time. Voltage swell is the event when the line voltage increase from the nominal line voltage. By using PSIM software, the injection and absorption of power into a grid system is verified during a voltage sag, swell, and normal. The simulation shows voltage grid vg, current inverter iinv, current grid, active power P, reactive power Q. The waveform of the measured parameter is analized to define the role of inverter toward grid. the The result shows performance of the proposed inverter to absorb reactive power during swell, and inject reactive power when sagging.

This paper proposes a new optimized control of photovoltaic two stages conversion cascade composed by Three Levels Boost (TLB) and Three Levels Neutral Point Clamped (TLNPC) inverter. In order to extract the maximum power from photovoltaic generator and get a balanced DC bus voltage, the duty cycles of the two TLB switches are determinate from a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) for the first switch and by adding to the first duty cycle an additional duty cycle obtained by integration of the error between the two capacitors voltages of DC bus. Balancing the bus voltages by the TLB using a single regulator avoid us to use a complex balancing algorithm by the redundant vectors of TLNPC inverter. For the control of the inverter, we used a Proportional Integral (PI) regulator optimized by PSO. This command allows us to have on one side a constant DC bus voltage and a current injection in phase with the grid voltage. To have an efficient follow-up of the TLNPC inverter reference voltages, the Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) is applied. The simulation is carried out in MATLAB/SIMULINK platform. The results obtained from the application of the FLC command associated with PI PSO are better compared to the simulation without optimization in terms of sum of the absolute values of the errors at the inputs of the three PI regulators.

This work presents a photovoltaic (PV) system, connected to a three phase grid. This work focuses on fault analysis in a grid connected photo-voltaic (PV) energy system. In this work, a three phase Multi-level Inverter connected with an AC grid fed by photovoltaic systems with advanced sine PWM control scheme is presented. The proposed modulation technique uses single reference signal and number of high frequency carrier signals to generate the PWM signal. Now a days, most of the photovoltaic (PV) power sources are connected to the AC grid. When photovoltaic power sources are connected to grid, the grid connected PV system is affected by various power quality issues like voltage sag, voltage swell, voltage disturbances, waveform distortions and three phase fault. One of the main power quality problems is three phase fault and it is appeared in the grid due to short circuit condition between two phases and ground. Fault analysis is carried out by creating a LG, LL, LLL and LLLG fault in the grid connected systems. Grid side voltage, current and power waveforms at the grid side are analysed with fault conditions. A detailed simulation has been done for the Multi-Level Inverter and the validation of system is verified through MATLAB/SIMULINK and the results are presented.

Streszczenie:
Abstract The article presents two contributions: the first is an optimised control structure for photovoltaic grid connected systems (PVGCSs). The power chain is composed of two cascaded power converters, namely, a boost converter and a five-level T-type multilevel converter. Traditionally, each power converter is controlled by a separate mode control (SMC) from the other, which is computationally intensive since each converter requires its own control system, which is not practical. The suggested control, called integrated finite set model predictive control (IFS-MPC), allows controlling cascaded converters at the same time in one stage, instead of controlling them separately. Consequently, the overall implementation system is widely reduced. The second contribution of the article is a modified IFS-MPC called modified integrated finite set-model predictive control (M-IFS-MPC), which ensures the correct functioning of the grid-tied PV system under certain faults in converter components. Indeed, when one of the DC-link capacitors fails or when one of the auxiliary switches breaks down, by selecting an appropriate choice of the DC-link capacitors’ voltage reference, the proposed design allows a normal operation without intervention on the power circuit.

This paper presents a Fuzzy Logic Controller-based energy management system (EMS) to control hybrid energy sources. The design is a single-phase and grid-tied system sized to handle the system's diverse load demands. The design system consists of photovoltaic modules, a grid source and a single-phase standby generator. The system uses energy produced by the PV modules (using Perturbation and Observation MPPT to maximize energy generated from the modules) and power stored in the Energy Storage Unit (ESU) to fulfil the various load needs while prioritizing the selling of excess energy to the grid. The fuzzy controller controls and manages the highlighted operational activities and prevents the ESU from overcharging and undercharging. Simulink is adopted to implement the proposed system within the simulation period; as the irradiation increased from 0W/m2 to 100W/m2, the grid's power supply dropped from 6000W to 4000W because of the amount of PV power generation between 0.6s and 0.8s. The photovoltaic module contributed to the system's overall power consumption while keeping the DC bus voltage between 396V and 406V. The EMS using the fuzzy logic controller provides high levels of energy security, system effectiveness and O &M cost optimization. It has also offered a consistent and uninterrupted power supply.

Streszczenie:
Photovoltaic distributed generation (PVDG) has seen tremendous growth in recent years, especially in the residential sector. Among other concerns, the voltage rise in AC networks is considered the most limiting factor in achieving increased PV penetration levels. A steady-state impact study is performed on a CIGRE low-voltage (LV) residential network. This paper compares six techniques to increase the PV penetration limit in the LV residential network, namely single-phase penetration (SPP), Distribution Scheme 1 (DS1), Distribution Scheme 2 (DS2), alternate phase penetration (APP), offline tap adjustment (OTA) and switched on-load tap adjustment (SOLTA). PSCAD software is used for this study. The best results are obtained for the DS2-SOLTA case that gives the minimum voltage magnitude and voltage unbalance in the system. The steady-state results are validated by a dynamic data study using measured solar irradiance and residential load data. A novel approach is also proposed for calculating the worst day from the data set. The obtained results verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The rapidly increasing distributed energy resources (DERs) in power systems are now getting interconnected to set community grid structures, where power quality will be a major concern. The grid-to-grid (G2G) bidirectional power transfer among the distribution microgrid will not be considered commercially feasible unless the upstream harmonics are under the limits. The aggregation of such harmonics, measured as total harmonic distortion (THD), is feared to be beyond tolerable limits with the progression of rooftop grid-tied PV-like installations. Hence, this THD needs to be characterized with DER generation end variables. In this work, the photovoltaic (PV) DERs’ dependency on environment variables such as irradiance was profiled in the context of generating and injecting harmonics into the grid. A mathematical model of a grid-tied three-phase PV DER was developed as part of this correlation characterization, matching the fundamental unit structure of a 1.4 MW solar canopy located on the Florida International University (FIU) Miami campus. To determine the qualitative association with produced THD patterns, the model was evaluated with various irradiance settings. A real-time digital simulation (RTDS) platform was used to verify it. Following this confirmation, sets of data from power quality meters at the point of common coupling and FIU field sensors were utilized to validate further the correlation model. The results showed that the grid current’s THD exhibited a high correlation with the irradiance profile and its variation over time. The early morning and late afternoon periods of the day, associated with a low irradiance, constantly had higher harmonics generated from the PV DER. The midday THD was rather rational with partial shadings, hence a geolocation-dependent factor. These findings were verified by an RTDS and validated by real field data. In quantifying the THD injected by a single DER at a high-frequency (2–150 kHz) supraharmonics (SH) level, a 3% peak increment in magnitude was observed from the high-fixed to the low-fixed irradiance profile. The correlation characteristics depicted that the hybrid microgrid suffered from a daytime-dependent harmonic insertion from the grid-tied DER. This is a global problem unless specific measures are taken to mitigate the harmonics. The electrically notorious higher-frequency SH was found to increase proportionally. The G2G power transfer can be limited because of the higher THD in the early morning and late afternoon, which will also worsen because the numbers of grid-tied PV DERs (i.e., rooftop solar and industrial solar) are likely to increase rapidly soon. The community grid structure can thus have a controlled harmonics filtration setup purposefully designed to address the findings of this work, which also fall within the scope of our future research.
