PROTESTANT DOCTRINE IN SILESIAN CALENDARS BEFORE THE MID-18TH CENTURY
 This article looks at the issue of confesionality and the presence of Protestant doctrine in early modern calendars produced in Silesia. The article is based on an examination of 78 early modern calendars (16th through mid-18th century), which were printed in Silesian printing houses (including Breslau, Brzeg, Legnica, Kłodzko, Kożuchów, Nysa and Opawa). Of the calendars bearing the names of editors/authors, 17 were Protestant. While some of these figures were pastors, others were intellectuals who associated with Protestant groups. Silesian calendars were addressed to both Protestants and Catholics. This dual religious character reflected the contemporary Silesian political context, which was fraught with religious tension. While these conditions stimulated a broad religious neutrality, leading many to avoid any direct reference to either Protestant reformers or their doctrines in published works, some Protestant religious ideals nevertheless permeated calendars. The goal of this infiltration, often couched in religious and biblical phrases, was to educate readers on specific social values and work ethic, morality, obedience to superiors, and openness to the outside world.

The article contains considerations on contemporary everyday life in Silesia. Its main aim is the interpretation of novels written in the late 2010s, for instance Od jednego Lucypera (From the same devil) by Anna Dziewitt-Meller, Pokora by Szczepan Twardoch, Kajś. Opowieść o G.rnym Śląsku (Kajś. A Story of Upper Silesia) by Zbigniew Rokita. Those stories are genologically placed between a family saga, herstory and myth retelling, but the most important purpose for the authors was the recognition of the specific Upper Silesian culture, past and present experiences and visions of the local community.

The present article focuses on eighteenth-century German-language descriptions of the Giant Mountains and Izera Mountains included in selected eighteenth-century accounts of trips to the high est mountains of Silesia and Bohemia by travellers from various German-speaking countries. The analysed fragments refer primarily to sites on the Silesian side of these mountain ranges, although the Bohemian part is mentioned in one case. Differing in terms of their countries of origin, the authors of these works — who included Silesians, a German from Bohemia as well as a man from Berlin and a man from Saxony — liked to refer in their accounts to well-known Swiss models, primarily to the poetic works of Albrecht von Haller and scholarly works of Johann Jakob Scheuchzer, comparing the Giant Mountains to the Alps and using in their descriptions of nature metaphors inspired by the famous Swiss authors, whose oeuvres were quite popular across the entire civilised Europe. The present article provides a detailed analysis of the descriptions of the various natural sites and phenomena, in which the authors use the vocabulary of the history of art and culture, comparing, for example, the view of valleys seen from a mountain top to miniature painting, a waterfall to a performance and music, and rock formations to architectural objects and ancient ruins.

Ivo Stolařík was certainly the most important researcher in the field of music-historical and ethnographic research in northeast Moravia and "Czech" Silesia. The authors of the study evaluate the lifelong contribution of this scholar to music history and folklore studies. Stolařík was the first (before the arrival of other musicologists in Ostrava in the second half of the 20th century, graduates of musicology from the universities in Brno or Olomouc, such as Vladimír Gregor, Miroslav Malura, Karel Boženek and others) to begin to systematically research the musical culture of the wider Ostrava region. This was firstly in the Department of Musicology of the Silesian Study Institute in Opava (from 1958 the Silesian Institute of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences) where he virtually laid the foundations for systematic research into the musical culture of the region. Stolařík was very active both in scientific publishing and in his other jobs, as Director of the Ostrava State Philharmonic (renamed the Janáček Philharmonic in 1971), A&R Specialist of the Supraphon record label in Prague, and before his retirement at the Wallachian Open Air Museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm. The paper also presents analytical probes into Stolařík's two most important monographs, Umělecká hudba v Ostravě 1918–1938 (Art Music in Ostrava 1918–1938) and Hrčava. Monografie goralské obce ve Slezsku (Hrčava. A Monograph of a Goral Village in Silesia).

Purpose. The aim of the study was to identify factors affecting kayak tourism and to try to assess their impact on the decision to choose this type of tourism in the Silesian Province. Method. The research involved a diagnostic survey method with the use of a survey questionnaire developed by the authors and based on literature. The research, in which the Silesian’s inhabitants dominated, consisted of in two national kayak rafting excursions. One of them was a traditional rafting race and took place during the summer, while the other was a recreational race and was held in winter. Findings. The research showed that the most important factor determining the demand for kayak tourism (both among women and men) was the purity of rivers, while cultural values were the least important. Research and conclusion limitations. The study included kayak tourists taking part in only the two above-mentioned national kayak rafting excursion; because it does not comprise of tourists taking part in kayak events or individual tourists (non-organized events), this limits the possibilities of inference and points to the need for further research. Practical implications: Further development of kayak tourism in the Silesian Province depends on the influence of individual demand factors. The work shows the direction of creating a tourist product that is kayaking. Originality: Despite rich literature on tourism demand, there is still a lack of literature references to kayak tourism. This topic is of particular importance in relation to the Silesian Province, which is most often associated with industrialized areas of high environmental degradation. Type of work: The paper presents the results of empirical research.

Abstract Silesian cities are facing economic changes related, among others, to low-carbon transformation. The PN-ISO 37120 standard, which requires the analysis of a number of indicators that determine the directions of city development in particular areas of its functioning, may become a tool supporting city authorities in those activities. Having the above in mind, the authors of the article attempted to find an answer to the question whether the local administration employees of selected Silesian cities have knowledge of the PN-ISO 37120:2015 standard today, as it is an interesting tool for the implementation of the requirements for modern cities. Therefore, the knowledge of the content of the standard by the local government personnel seems to be necessary in order to decide whether this standard is an appropriate tool for the development of a particular city/municipality or not. The study was a pilot project and it involved two cities located in the Silesian agglomeration.

Das Textkorpus entstammt dem Antiquum Registrum Privilegiorum Et Statutorum Civitatis Cracoviensis, das im Jahre 1936 von Stanisław Estreicher in Kraków veröffentlicht wurde. Die Erforschung dreier ausgewählter Eidesformeln bewies eindeutig, dass die Stadtschreiber der Krakauer Stadtkanzlei die schlesische Mundart gebrauchten, was mithilfe der entsprechenden Belege untermauert wird. The Silesian dialect in Lesser Poland on the basis of the language analysis of selected oaths from the 15th centuryThe article hereunder presents the language analysis of the chosen German oaths from the 15th century, which come from the Antiquum Registrum Privilegiorum Et Statutorum Civitatis Cracoviensis published by Stanisław Estreicher in 1936 in Cracow. The texts of the unknown scriveners were written in the Silesian dialect, what can be proved on the basis of the way of the notation in the oath. The authors introduce the results of their analysis showing the Silesian characteristic features with the appropriate examples.

The implementation of sustainability in urban spaces has been studied for many years in different countries. Sustainability means maintaining a certain ecological status enabling longevity and durability. However, in the case of smart cities, sustainability is supported by information communication technology (ICT) adoption and implementation. In this paper, authors focus on metropolis architecture modeling and recommend positive experiences gathered by municipalities in different countries. The collected experiences and good practices concern ICT implementation for sustainable metropolis management. Authors formulated an original Model of Metropolis Ecosystem Architecture in the ArchiMate language. This model preparation required literature review and studies on ICT implementation opportunities for urban governance. The Metropolis Ecosystem Architecture Model (MEAM) is to support strategic planning and ICT eco-innovation management in the Silesian Metropolis. This significant model emphasized the metropolis stakeholders’ interests combined with ICT solutions.

“Is Our Eagle White or Golden?” Some Thoughts on Disputes over Commemoration and Promotion of the Duchy of Cieszyn: The article is focused on the discussion accompanying the reconstruction of the flag of the Duchy of Cieszyn. According to the plan of the initiators of the mentioned project, this act should help to create a touristic brand called “Duchy of Cieszyn”. The flag was supposed to help in the process of promoting the Cieszyn Silesia as an attractive touristic region. A couple of days after the flag was presented, the authors of the idea had to face the accusation that they supported the Silesian separatist tendencies which are associated with the Silesian Autonomy Movement [Ruch Autonomii Śląska – RAŚ]. The article presents the arguments of both sides: the critics and initiators of the reconstructed flag. It tries to show the sources of the disputes and narrations of each of the opponents. In the middle of these arguments there are different points of view on the region and its past. They are linked with the different identity and experience of the regional past. The article also focuses e.g., on tensions between identities built around the categories of Cieszyn Silesia and Podbeskidzie which is the unofficial name of the area on the borderland between the historical regions of Lesser Poland [Małopolska] and Cieszyn Silesia. Essentially, the identity of the inhabitants of Podbeskidzie has started to develop after World War II. On the one hand it is linked with the process of cultural forgetting, on the other hand the inhabitants have various experiences of the past. The article also tries to present the opinions of a couple of representants of the Polish minority in Zaolzie [Trans-Olza] in the Czech Republic regarding the reconstruction of the Duchy of Cieszyn flag. In general, the article focuses on conflicts of memory as well as tensions between local / regional and national perspectives.

University of Entrepreneurship and Law in Czech Republic has long time been dedicated to the research which relate to the identification of creative and innovative companies. These companies are characterized by a creative and innovative approach to their own companies and their products. The paper presents among others authors’ experience which they have come within the research project of “Model of Creative and Innovative Organizations and Its Verification in Conditions of the Moravian-Silesian Region”. An integral part of the research project was also a questionnaire for data collection and an analytical tool for the data analysis. This project was realized in 2014 and it followed up the several earlier research works concerning the identification of creative and also innovative companies in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Currently, the authors have been still improving the methods of identification of creative and innovative companies. The paper submits some of our practical experience.

This article proposes a method of the assessment of distribution of tourist facilities. The main aim of presented study is to assess a spatial density of tourist elements. The evaluation of the distribution of tourist facilities in the landscape allows to indicate overloaded areas. The second purpose is the proposition of an indicator measuring the landscape saturation of tourist facilities, i.e. density index developed by the authors. The index, referred to river basin, is based on the ratio of the area of the tourist facilities to the total area of the unit. For the purposes of calculation, the authors developed a framework for the classification of tourist facilities based on its spatial character. The method was examined in the Silesian Beskid mountain range and can be applied in similar mountain areas.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is determine the level of medical services quality provided by medical clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: The research was based on analyzing the results of a survey conducted among patients of Silesian clinics. First, a survey sheet was designed using the SERVQUAL model. The next step was to conduct a study in clinics in Silesia. As part of the study, 50 patients’ survey votes were received and analyzed. Findings: Respondents rate the state of health care in Poland as good, telehealth should be reserved for those in quarantine, and should be conducted only when prescriptions are being written, not when diagnosing a patient, respondents pointed out that medical facilities provided meeting conditions that did not expose patients to COVID-19 infection, hence it seems unjustified to use tele advice for patients not under compulsory quarantine. Research limitations/implications: The main research limitation is the number of feedback surveys received. If there were more votes, the research sample could be even more credible. Practical implications: The study was conducted in times of a real epidemiological threat. The results of the study show how, in a group of 50 patients, the key aspects related to the provision of medical care in Silesian healthcare institutions are perceived. Social implications: Patients’ observations regarding the functioning of the health care system in times of a pandemic and the key aspects related to ensuring access to this care are extremely valuable tips that may improve the standard of medical care in Poland also during possible future pandemic waves. Originality/value: Carrying out a literature analysis indicated that there were no studies conducted among patients so far. Thus, the research gap was defined. The authors decided to conduct the study directly among patients by sending the sheets to medical clinics.

The paper presents the results of a study on how global climate change is reflected in local development strategies. The study included 173 Lower Silesian municipalities and is one of those rarely undertaken in the Polish literature. They were based on original studies of local development strategies carried out between 2016 and 2022, as well as interviews with those responsible for preparing and updating these documents. The research covered 250 local development strategies developed for 173 Lower Silesian municipalities (existing and updated). The authors briefly discussed the importance of development strategies in the functioning of municipalities and local communities. The main formal and substantive mistakes made in such documents are also presented. The main element of the presentation was the ways (forms) and the extent to which global climate change is reflected in municipal development strategies. The study has confirmed the main hypothesis that global climate change is insufficiently addressed at the local level in the analysed municipalities.

Effective implementation of pro bono tasks by local government units may be carried out only if they obtain the necessary income. One of the types of own revenue of local government units on communal level (LGUs) is the dog ownership fee which generally constitutes a very low share in the total income of the commune. At the same time the enforcement of this fee, due to a large number of personal exemptions, requires disproportionate expenditure in relation to the income earned. The purpose of the paper is to verify the legitimacy of maintaining a fee on owning a dog in the communes of the Silesian Voivodeship in the light of the authors’ own research regarding the year 2016. The conducted research indicated that none of the communes of the Silesian Voivodship achieved the income from dog ownership higher than 0.5% of the total income. The effectiveness of the enforcement of fees on dog ownership was analysed in detail, as well as the percentage comparison of dog fee income with other sources of own income. The paper consists of theoretical and empirical part and presents the essence of financial independence of the commune in the context of imposed taxes and local fees.

Metropolis logistics is a new research issue that begins to play an important role in shaping inter-organizational relationships. The concept of logistics in metropolitan terms is a contemporary term used primarily to identify issues that will improve the transformation of products and information in building inter-organizational efficiency. On the one hand, the issues of metropolitan logistics are based on shaping the flow of products and information in building inter-organizational efficiency. On the other hand, the formation of inter-organizational bonds has a complex and multidimensional structure that creates a specific network of interactions in which metropolitan logistics determines their development in relation to the environment. The aim of the article is to identify the conditions that build up inter-organizational relations within the Silesian-Zagłębie (Ś-Z) metropolitan area. The article presents selected results of exploratory research carried out among logistic entities operating in the Silesian-Zagłębie metropolitan area. The authors attempted to answer the question: what are the challenges facing metropolitan logistics in shaping inter-organizational relationships?

The financial crisis undoubtedly exerted much pressure on the companies operating inPoland. Thus, it is important to undertake researches that reveal the paths and strength of financial crisis transmission with regard to the business entities. This paper presents partial results of the research dedicated to the analysis of the impact of financial crisis on the financial situation of companies operating in the Silesian Voivodship. It analyzes and discusses the general changes of the two sets of financial ratios that inform about the general financial condition of the business: the financial balance and the level of bankruptcy risk. Scientific aim: The paper aims at analyzing the changes of the financial situation and bankruptcy risk of a population of Silesian companies with regard to the improvement or deterioration. In particular, it aims at reflecting the differences visible with the application of aggregated data characterizing the population of Silesian companies as compared to the population of all companies operating inPoland. Methodology: The study is based the application of a part of authors’ self-developed method – the CFS Watch, which consists of five analytical modules. In the study, two modules are applied: the GPA Module (General Performance Assessment) with regard to financial balance and the MDA Module (Multidiscriminant Analysis) with regard to the bankruptcy risk. Grounded on the theory of financial analysis and its application for corporate finance purposes, the modules are based on the selected financial ratios that are a subject for further comparison regarding their height and dynamics of changes. The analytical modules are applied for aggregated data provided by the Polish Central Statistical Office.

Burning coal from the hard coal from the Silesian Coal Basin mine "Julian" and the Lubelskie Coal Basin mine "Bogdanka" with supports only - did not show any reduction of the SO2 emission in the combustion gases.

However, new, more aggressive variants of COVID-19 mean that the pandemic is often taking on the nature of the one experienced by societies a year ago. So, the knowledge about the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic is still up-to-date—significantly where the essential determinants of its spread have not changed. The article presents the Silesian Voivodeship case in Southern Poland, distinguished by different geographical conditions compared to the entire country. The authors showed the relationship between the spread of the COVID-19 epidemic and the characteristic attributes of the analysed area (post-)mining functions or urban shrinkage. The article conducted a dependence study using the Pearson correlation coefficient and the signs table method. In turn, the authors used thematic cartography to present the results of the analysis. It turned out that two attributes, namely (post-)mining and urban shrinkage, are essential in spreading the epidemic with the region analysed. This conclusion may be essential in implementing national and regional policies related to reducing the COVID-19 pandemic. However, a limitation in the scope of the presented applications is the fact that mining regions, such as the Silesian (Śląskie) Voivodeship, are currently less numerous in the world than, for example, those that develop based on services.

Multimodal freight transport in cities is a complex, valid, and vitally important problem. It is more seldom underlined in scientific studies and included in cities’ strategies that devote more attention to passenger transport than freight transport. The increased utilization of multimodal transport matches current transport policy and at the same time, it is one of the most important challenges put before cities striving to achieve sustainable development. In this case, the paper embarks upon the problem of relations between multimodal transport development and the sustainable development of the cities. The objective of the paper is an analysis of the impact of the selected city of the Upper Silesian metropolis on the development of multimodal freight transport and an assessment of the impact of the development of multimodal transport on the sustainable development of the cities of the Upper Silesian metropolis. The authors developed three research questions in order to implement the adopted objective. The process of looking for the answer included four stages. Within the first and second stages, the literature studies and experts’ research allowed for identifying key factors of the multimodal transport development that a city may have an impact on. In the third stage, the research was two-fold and was based on a questionnaire and scenario analysis. Due to the individual character of each of the cities, scenarios were developed for Katowice, being the main economic center of Upper Silesian and Zagłębie Metropolis. As a result of the research, factors have been identified that must be included in a strategy of a city that strives for sustainable development. The last stage of the research focused on the initial concept of the multimodal transport development impact assessment on sustainable development of the cities. Conclusions developed at individual stages allowed for answering the research questions.

In the following article, the Authors present the results of initial researches into a building component needed for thermal insulation. The building component is a elastic insulation plate made from recycling materials. The solution is protected by industry patter Elastyczna pyta izolacyjna No 23 621 for Silesian University of Technology Gliwice. The paper presents the determination method of effective thermal conductivity for granular materials. It is based on the geometrical model for the determination of granular medium structure, which is based on the theory of the highest-density arrangement of equal-sized spheres. The elaborated by the Authors modeling results, obtained on the basis of an innovative description (definition) of granular medium, were addressed to the commonly applied two-component medium. To verify the correctness of the calculation model proposed by the Authors, the results were subjected to validation, basing on the thermal conductivity of elastic plates in a hot plate apparatus.

The review analyzes the new edition of the travel notes of the Silesian nobleman Erich Lassota von Steblau (1550–1616). It was prepared by an international team of authors from Scandinavia and Germany led by Thomas Riis. Lassota’s travel notes are the most important source on the history of the 16th century and a number of European countries. Lassota traveled as a mercenary commander and diplomat to Spain, Portugal, Poland, Sweden, and Ukraine. Until now, only historians of these countries have been interested in his testimonies. The focus of researches was mainly on ethnographic and political aspects. Meanwhile, for the first time since 1866, the new edition has united the entire corpus of Lassota’s records known to us and enables to widen the scope of the discussion. How was the religious climate of the era reflected in his texts and to which extent? Were they written by a Catholic or a Protestant? Can we talk about the national or political preferences of the author? Finally, what was Lassota’s gentry worldview, and how did he construct his own estate identity? In addition, a nobleman from Silesia was keenly interested in military affairs, in particular, in Spanish combat tactics. His notes also demonstrate the level of book culture, the author’s acquaintance with the works of prominent contemporaries. All these aspects nowadays are noteworthy to European historians on a wide interregional material.

These challenges have forced contemporary companies to shape new concepts - outsourcing and offshoring. These solutions allow to increase the efficiency of the company’s operation. The article aims to introduce both concepts and show their enormous role in the process of company management in the conditions of market virtualization. The focus was on discussing the separation in the IT sphere. The results of research conducted by the authors among Silesian enterprises, indicating the degree of use of these concepts, are presented.

In 2012 politicians and some historians blocked the first (after 1989) permanent exhibition of the history of Upper Silesia. Its history turned out to be much more controversial and went beyond the framework of storytelling in a museum. Guidelines of the exhibition scenario have been consulted from 2010 with specialists and in the course of focus surveys. Result of the research and experts’ opinions defined modern history (19th and 20th c.) as key period for understanding the heritage of the region. The authors of the project wanted to replace national and regional myths by new categories of two leading universal interpretation such as modernity and industrialization The authors wanted to show the history of Silesia from the perspective of Poland, Germany and Czechia for their cultural presence etc. was significant in its history. The project was rejected and the script resigned from a multinational and European perspective.

The paper is dedicated to the issues of Ukraine’s integration into the European Research Area (ERA) – a single research and innovation space open to the world and based on the internal market, which ensures the free exchange of researchers, scientific knowledge and technology. A comparative analysis of the institutional prerequisites for the creation of a single European research and innovation area has been conducted. The legislative basis of the European integration vector of Ukraine’s development in the science, technology and innovation sector is substantiated, while the flaws in the organisational and institutional support for euro-integrational reforms are identified. The idea and phases of ERA development are considered, the problems of implementing the Roadmap of Ukraine’s integration of into ERA are defined. The main European programs of scientific, technological and innovative cooperation are systematized and Ukraine’s participation in them is analysed. The case of cooperation between the Silesian Technological University «Silesian Polytechnic in Gliwice» and the Institute of Industrial Economics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine is considered as a positive example of establishing collaboration in research and development between Ukrainian and European partner organizations. The authors propose the framework for creating institutional conditions that would ensure proper functioning and cohesion of the scientific, technological and innovative sector of Ukraine, as well as its effective integration to ERA in compliance with the strategic interests of international cooperation.

Students´ answers have shown the lack of unanimous responses, which indicates the fact that they were not able to evaluate the situation in a distinct way placing their answers mainly in the middle of the offered spectrum. The authors of the article especially appreciate the data collected in the two last questions as they can contribute to optimization of online learning and teaching in the future.

The paper aims to record the position of the Slavic microlanguage, which has been strengthening in recent years, formed by the dialects of the inhabitants of Czech Silesia and in no way coinciding with the “Silesian” language of Polish Silesia (Czech ‘slezština’, Polish ‘język śląski’, German ‘Wasserpolnisch’). The study is novel in that it is the first to use the material of the travelogue published in printed form by the famous modern Ostrava blogger and writer L. Větvička, whose creative work is focused on this Slavic microlanguage, to analyse the vocabulary of the said microlanguage. Therefore, all the results of this study have been obtained for the first time. These results are the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of thirty lexical units of the Lach (Czech-Silesian = Ostrava) microlanguage, which we found in the specified travelogue.

Its construction in the Habsburg dominions in the turbulent period of the Counter-Reformation was meant to finally put an end to the Silesian-Bohemian border dispute and become a visible sign of Catholic rule over the highest mountain range of the two neighbouring countries. The construction of the chapel also marked the beginning of tourism in the highest range of the Sudetes; initially, its nature was religious and focused on pilgrimages to the summit of Śnieżka, featuring, in addition to local inhabitants, also sanatorium visitors to Cieplice Warmbrunn, which was owned by the Schaffgotschs.After the three Silesian Wars, as a result of which the lands to the north of the mountains were separated from the Habsburgs’ Kingdom of Bohemia, the situation in the region changed radically. The Counter-Reformation pressure ceased and the Lutherans began to grow in importance, supported as they were by the decidedly pro-Protestant Prussian state, governed by its tolerant monarch.The period was also marked by an unprecedented growth in the literature on the Giant Mountains — there were poems Tralles, nature studies Volkmar and travel accounts GutsMuths, Troschel and others written about the highest range of the Sudetes. The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced all spheres of life. It has an impact on the education of children and youth. The authors’ research focused on religious education during the pandemic by the Roman Catholic Church in Poland in the Śląskie Voivodeship. The criterion for choosing the environment was dictated by demographic conditions. The Śląskie Voivodeship has the highest population density per square kilometer, which contributed to the largest number of virus infections. The principal purpose of the research was to gather religion teachers’ opinions concerning organization and implementation of the remote teaching of religion in the Silesian Voivodeship (Województwo Śląskie). So far, there has been no research conducted in the field of the abovementioned issues in the area chosen by the authors. The authors’ research, carried out from June to August 2020, covered 700 people, which accounts for 18.7% of the religious education teachers working in the Śląskie Voivodeship. The results of the authors’ own research allowed formulating a conclusion that the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the development of modern information and communication competencies of all participants of religious education. Entities involved in this type of education recognized and used multiple opportunities offered by information and communication technologies, which can be seen in the respondents’ declarations describing various forms of their didactic and educational on-line work. The COVID-19 pandemic has motivated parents to become more involved in the religious education of younger school-age children. The surveyed religion teachers declared that, thanks to the activity and the help of their parents, the children systematically participated in religion lessons and carried out orders and educational tasks without major problems. Thus, indirectly, parents of children of a younger school age were covered by religious education and were subject to pedagogy. Nevertheless, as teachers have pointed out, the virtual world makes it impossible to form authentic interpersonal relationships. The research confirmed the thesis, according to which religious education carried out in distance learning limits the complete implementation of its objectives, since an upbringing in faith calls for community that necessitates direct contact between the pupil and the teacher.

Kierlik et al. recently reported their study in this journal on the application of Mössbauer spectroscopy in identifying the iron-containing components in Upper Silesian topsoil as being under industrial anthropopressure. While the presented work is an excellent example of characterizing topsoil, a significant part of the study involving iron-bearing samples using 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy is erroneous. In the spectral fitting routine for the obtained Mössbauer spectra of the sample IIA (Figure 2; Table 3), the authors have erroneously fitted only a single sextet for magnetite, which is unacceptable. The line width obtained by them is also incorrectly mentioned in Figure 2, as evident from fitting D1 and D2 doublets as well as of magnetite tetrahedral and octahedral sites, making the relative abundances of individual phases meaningless. The inaccurate line width makes the authors fit the inadequate number of doublets necessary for the iron-bearing phases present in these samples, resulting in incorrect relative abundance for the other phases found in the materials, making the subsequent discussion not much useful.

Research background: A lot of companies in the market create a variety of situations in which they compete with one another. At the same time companies crave for the same pool of demand, and in fact the money held by the buyers. Attempts to define the notion of com-petitiveness of the company appear frequently in scientific publications and in the research conducted by various institutions in different countries. The concept of competitiveness is used to determine the ratio of enterprise characteristics to these of its competitors, resulting from many internal features and the ability to deal with an external environment.
 Purpose of the article: The purpose of this article is to present results of the Company Competitiveness Barometer, conducted in 2014, 2015 and 2016 on a group of more than 600 Polish companies. The Barometer is a theoretical basis for the integrated model of competi-tiveness designed by the authors of the article. The specific objectives of this article are: to provide an overview of the research methodology, to present the results of empirical studies of more than 600 Polish companies, to create an outline of the future direction of the research on competitiveness of enterprises by means of the Company Competitiveness Barometer.
 Methods: The questionnaire used in the Company Competitiveness Barometer is built of 48 questions. 45 of them are related to the characteristics of the company that are affecting its competitiveness, and 3 questions are metric questions. The questionnaire can be found on the www.sensorium24.com website.
 Findings & Value added: The research carried out from the point of view of the company’s employees, offer an opportunity to reflect and think about the competitiveness of their own organization and factors that are shaping it. The IT tool used makes it possible to compare own results with other companies participating in the survey.

Purpose: The primary aim of this paper is to explore the issue of food waste in contemporary societies, its causes, consequences, and potential solutions. Methodology: The authors conducted a survey among households in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship of Poland to diagnose the structure and causes of food waste. They also analyzed statistical data on food waste in European Union countries. Results: The study found that the most food waste occurs in Germany, France, and Italy, while the least occurs in Malta, Luxembourg, and Slovenia. The authors concluded that food waste harms three interconnected areas of sustainable development goals: environmental, economic, and social. Theoretical Contribution: This paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on food waste by providing a comprehensive analysis of its causes and impacts backed by empirical data. It adds value to sustainability studies by linking food waste to broader socio-economic and environmental issues. Practical Implications: The authors propose several measures to reduce food waste, such as planning purchases, processing food, sharing food with relatives or pets, using conventional and non-standard methods of food storage, and increasing the level of education and awareness about the issue. Individuals, communities, and policy-makers can implement these practical suggestions to address the problem of food waste.

The purpose of this article is to identify the long-term economic consequences of mine decommissioning for five selected cities located in Poland in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. It is carried out over a period of 18 years and covers the period 2003–2020. The economic effects of decommissioning are examined in the context of the budgets of cities where mining plants were closed. In the course of the analyses, the authors of the article attempt to answer the following research questions: (1) has the decommissioning of the mines influenced the current and strategic situation of the examined cities in terms of their budgets? (2) Have the examined cities felt the economic effects of mine decommissioning in a similar way? The assessment of the economic effects of mine decommissioning was carried out from the following two perspectives: (1) operational, relating to the balance of local budgets, and (2) strategic, taking into account the level of long-term liabilities of the examined cities. As part of the research methodology, budget analysis, descriptive statistics, dynamics and trends analysis, correlation and comparative analysis were used. The research carried out in the article shows that the decommissioning of hard coal mines in the examined cities of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin had a negative impact on the balance of local budgets and the level of long-term debt. This was especially true in the cities where all the mines had been decommissioned and which had no way of replacing the mining industry with other economic alternatives. The cities with more diversified economic activity and sources of income were in a better economic condition.

Abstrakt: Factors affecting passenger behaviour can be divided into the internal (relating to transport supply) and the external (which are independent of carriers). The literature emphasises that, as rail transport develops, supply becomes comparable along many routes, leaving external factors to be regarded as increasingly important. In contrast, the authors of this article consider that deregulation and transformation of the rail transport system in Poland have ensured that internal factors continue to exert the primary influence on passenger behaviour in this country. The work detailed in this article has thus sought to demonstrate the impact of transport supply on passenger volume at individual stations in those towns and cities of the region of Lower Silesia that have access to rail passenger transport throughout the year.

This article concerns the controlling process in small and medium enterprises. Authors discuss theoretical issues connected with controlling in an enterprise. Moreover, the article presents results of a self-study carried out among employees in small and medium enterprises, which run their activity in Silesian Voivodship. The aim of this article is to assess controlling in the view of employees in small and medium enterprises.

The short description of the new approach to the pneumatic powder injection process analysis was presented in the article. The experiments with the high speed camera recording of the two-phase jet in pneumatic powder injection process were carried out in the Department of Foundry, Silesian University of Technology, Poland. The results were briefly analyzed and some interesting conclusions appeared, especially that the real velocity of the injected particles is far less than it is normally calculated with use of the well-known formulas. They were compared with existing literature data as well as with some experimentspreviously made by authors. Powder particles velocity and two-phase jet mass concentration were analyzed as the most important parameters for powder injection process. The results described are part of the complex experimental plan and the next step is computer modeling (just launched) of the jet introducing liquid.

The author aims at presenting examples of literary descriptions of Odra flooding (especially in the context of the most recent in 1997 and 2010) and the river regions in the perspective of aquacriticism. This approach belongs to a wider concept of ecocriticism which perceives the river as a key part of environment. The question being posed is what kind of influence can be traced in literary texts representing floods and how does literature influence perception of aquatic catastrophes such as floods. Since flood belongs to the catastrophe discourse, it blurs anthropocentric knowledge on rivers and indicates aquacentric modes of recognition. The ecoparadigmatic role of Odra is indicated by Silesian authors (in the collection Wie die Oder rauscht ) and writers biographically connected with the river (Tokarczuk). The environmental function of the river can be better acknowledged through literary fiction that “gives voice to the river”.

Seismic phenomena threaten land-based buildings, structures, and infrastructure and can transform land topography. There are two basic types of seismic phenomena, namely, tectonic and anthropogenic, which differ mainly in epicenter depth, surface impact range, and magnitude (energy). This article shows how a land surface was changed by a series of seven rock mass tremors of magnitude ML = 2.3–2.6 in March–May 2017. Their immediate cause was the “momentary” acceleration of void clamping, which was activated by local and short-term seismic phenomena caused by human activity. The induced seismic events resulted from the geological structure of the rock mass, which in the specific region of examination was classified as being highly prone to mining tremors. The authors focused on describing vertical surface displacements in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin in the south of Poland. The surface deformations were identified using DInSAR technology, which allows quasi-continuous monitoring of large areas of land surface. The present research used freely available data from the Copernicus Program and seismic data from the European Plate Observing System.

Motivation: The concept of competitiveness is used to define the ratio of enterprises to competitors and results from many internal features and the ability to deal with an external environment. However, comparing main elements of company competitiveness to each other does not give detailed position in the market sector, which is the main area of competition. Therefore it is necessary to look for a different method of companies comparison in the field of their competitiveness.
 Aim: The purpose of this paper is to present a assessment method of company competitiveness based on the Company Competitiveness Profile in a market sector. The Company Competitive Profile consists of different variables of a competitive potential, a strategy of competition and a competitive advantage. This method is verified based on results of the Company Competitiveness Barometer conducted in 2021 in 177 Polish companies in the Silesian Region. The Company Competitiveness Barometer is an online research tool for assessing company competitiveness which has been used by the authors since 2012.
 Results: The questionnaire used in the Company Competitiveness Barometer contains 48 questions. 45 of them are related to the characteristics of the company that are affecting its competitiveness, and 3 questions are metric questions. The questionnaire can be found on http://sensorium24.com. There were 2 hypotheses which were verified in the paper: H1: The configuration of the components of the Company Competitiveness Profile is different in different sectors of the economy. H2: Each company can be characterized in a sector by its individual Company Competitive Profile. The papers presents verification of two hypothesis which concern the Company Competitive Profiles and their use in assessment of company competitiveness in an economic sector. This is also an added value and an original contribution to company research methodology.

In the study, the authors tackled the problem of diversifying the sources of income of the rural population, and thus the opportunities for their creation from sources other than agriculture. It was found that in the future rural areas niche activities will play a greater role, and one of the new directions of activity may be the creation of retirement homes in the countryside. The saturation of the country in such units varies. Most of them are in the largest, most populous and most urbanized voivodships. In terms of availability, however, the most favorable situation is in the Opolskie, Świętokrzyskie and Warmian-Masurian voivodships. In rural areas, there was the most social welfare for homes in the Mazowieckie, Małopolskie, Wielkopolskie and Śląskie voivodships. However, taking into account the population of voivodships, the most favorable situation was in the Pomeranian, Opolskie and Śląskie voivodships. The highest availability of seats occurred in Pomeranian, Opole, Masovian and Silesian.

Abstract Research in termoacoustics began with the observation of the heat transfer between gas and solids. Using this interaction the intense sound wave could be applied to create engines and heat pumps. The most important part of thermoacoustic devices is a regenerator, where press of conversion of sound energy into thermal or vice versa takes place. In a heat pump the acoustic wave produces the temperature difference at the two ends of the regenerator. The aim of the paper is to find the influence of the material used for the construction of a regenerator on the properties of a thermoacoustic heat pump. Modern technologies allow us to create new materials with physical properties necessary to increase the temperature gradient on the heat exchangers. The aim of this paper is to create a regenerator which strongly improves the efficiency of the heat pump.Polish acoustical community mourns the loss of Professor Marian Urbańczyk who passed away on July 10, 2013. Professor Marian Urbańczyk was born on February 2nd, 1948, in Katowice (Poland). There he attended the Silesian Technical College (Śląskie Techniczne Zakłady Naukowe), where he was a student of the electrical engineering and electronics class and in 1967 completed his secondary education with school-leaving examination and a honorary mention. In 1973, he graduated successfully (again with distinction) from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the Silesian University of Technology (Politechnika Śląska) in Gliwice. The same year he has joined the SUT’s Institute of Physics as a university teacher at the newly created Faculty of Mathematics and Physics. The late Professor Urbańczyk remained connected with the Institute until 2009, from 2007 to 2009 performing the function of its Deputy Director for Students’ Affairs. The scope of the Professor’s scientific interest comprised electronics of solid state, metrology, and technical physics, with special attention paid by him to acoustics, including acoustoelectronic systems and their applications in technology and metrology. In 1981, Marian Urbańczyk delivered his doctor’s dissertation concerning technical acoustics at the Institute of Fundamental Problems of Technology Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPT PAN) in Warsaw. In the year 1999, he was granted the post-doctoral degree (habilitation) by the Council of the Faculty of Electronics at the Wrocław University of Technology. In 2012, Marian Urbańczyk was made full professor by the President of Poland. The Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice remained the scene of Professor Urbańczyk’s scientific activity to the very end of his life. Since September 1, 2009, Professor had been working at the Department of Optoelectronics at the SUT’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, acting as its Deputy Director. Professor Marian Urbańczyk was a promoter of several doctor’s dissertations and numerous master theses. In the framework of his didactic work, he has organized many students’ laboratories and workshops. He was also the author of a wide variety of teaching curriculums (syllabuses). The late Professor Urbańczyk was highly valued both by his students and coworkers. Professor Marian Urbańczyk was an unquestionable authority in the field of technical acoustics, metrology, and electronics, and an internationally acknowledged author (and co-author) of more than 200 scientific publications, nearly 50 of them having been included in the ISI list. His papers were published in highly-ranked journals and frequently cited by other authors. He was also the co-author of numerous patents and patent applications. The Professor was a member of Scientific Committees of many conferences, both domestic and international. Professor Marian Urbańczyk was a member of many international and Polish scientific societies, including the European Acoustical Association (EAA), the International Optical Engineering Society (SPIE), the Polish Acoustical Society (PTA), the Photonic Society of Poland, the Polish Physical Association (PTF), and the Polish Association of Sensor Technology (PTTS). Since 1975, Professor Urbańczyk was a member of the Polish Acoustical Society (PTA), elected later the Member of the Main Board of this organization and the Chairman (Local President) of the Board of Upper Silesia Branch of the PTA. The Professor acted also as a co-organizer of annual international conferences, including the Winter School on Wave and Quantum Acoustics and the Workshop on Acoustoelectronics. For his scientific achievements, Professor Urbańczyk has been awarded state orders, medals, and scientific rewards. Professor Urbańczyk’s death is an irreparable loss to the Silesian University of Technology, the Polish Acoustical Society, and the whole Polish scientific community. Professor Marian Urbańczyk was an extraordinary person, always very kind-hearted and understanding for others. For those who knew him personally, he was a Friend and a Master. And as the Friend and the Master we will retain him in our fond memory.

In light of the content contained in this article, in the context of demographic change and globalization, there can be no doubt that education responding to contemporary challenges is a guarantee of promoting knowledge and profiling mobile and adaptive qualified staff characterized by having a specific level of knowledge, unique skills and highly developed qualifications. It is widely recognized that knowledge is the decisive factor in competitive advantage. The dynamics of changes taking place are conditioned by the resource and innovation of people’s knowledge, quality of work, education and training, the ability to think quickly and be innovative and implement new solutions in the process of production, distribution and services. The authors of the article justify why education should be seen as a value in all social and individual interactions, especially in a situation of economic change, globalization and demographic transition. It should refer to the inspiration of change, but also to the stabilization of people’s situations. Learning and education is therefore a modern value. Hence, it is important to perceive the strength and value of education in every social situation.
