Streszczenie:
ABSTRACT Clarice Lispector’s entry as an author into the United States happens at different moments, beginning in the 1950s, with the translation of several short stories, carried out among others by Elizabeth Bishop, culminating with a biography of the author written in English by Benjamin Moser in 2009, and a little later, with the publication of the short stories and other pieces, in the emblematic edition entitled The Complete Stories, in 2015, edited by Benjamin Moser and translated by Katrina Dodson. These publications put the translators in the spotlight, as they were responsible for renewing Clarice’s presence on American soil. This paper aims to research the translators of Clarice Lispector’s works in the English-speaking cultural system, considering only the American context. The aim is to highlight these professional figures who contributed to the dissemination of this important Brazilian writer abroad, analyze their profile, and also examine their presence and imprint on some of the translations performed, such as prefaces, postscripts, notes, etc., assessing the degree of visibility and invisibility (Venuti 2021). By considering the relevance of translators as social actors/dialogical bodies (Robinson, 1991, 2012) and as “translating subjects” (Berman, 1995) and the fact that English translations of Clarice’s works have influenced and stimulated the circulation of this author in other literary systems, by examining the biobibliographical profile, verifying its presence or not in the paratexts (Genette, 2009/Batchelor, 2018) of Clarice Lispector’s English-language translators and their translation position, as well as their project and horizon (Berman, 1995), we gain an understanding of the translation policies of a given cultural polysystem.

The Malay stories of Pelanduk yang Bijak, Peniup Seruling and Seuncang Padi were translated to English, and analysed to identify the translation problems. The procedures were also investigated to find solutions for the problems using translation procedures as the framework for data analysis. After the translation of the stories, the source and target texts were analysed to identify problems and procedures. The findings of the study indicated two types of problems in the Malay-English translations of the stories; structural or semantic problems, and problems arising from cultural differences. Among various translation procedures used in the translations, literal translation was the most common procedure in the translation of the Malay stories. The findings from translations and the analyses in this study could be utilised in translator and interpreter training classrooms. Finding solutions to the translation problems could improve translators’ ability to better theorise while translating, and thus produce “good” translations, particularly in the translation of literary works from Malay to English. This study could have pedagogical significance, as the Malay short stories contain moral lessons by which Malay culture could be further introduced and “exported” to the English-speaking audience through literature.

Translating short stories presents unique challenges and complexities that demand careful examination and analysis. This study explores the intricacies of translating this literary form by examining the strategies employed by translators to overcome obstacles. This study focuses on the short story "Cat in the Rain" by Ernest Hemingway and three Arabic translations, analyzing the approaches employed by translators. By investigating techniques such as domestication, adaptation, and literal translation, this study identifies the strengths and limitations of each approach and provides insights into how translators tackle the unique challenges of short story translation. The study found that the different Arabic translations used different translation strategies. These strategies include word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, and idiomatic translation.

We introduce a database (IDEST) of 250 short stories rated for valence, arousal, and comprehensibility in two languages. The texts, with a narrative structure telling a story in the first person and controlled for length, were originally written in six different languages (Finnish, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish), and rated for arousal, valence, and comprehensibility in the original language. The stories were translated into English, and the same ratings for the English translations were collected via an internet survey tool (N = 573). In addition to the rating data, we also report readability indexes for the original and English texts. The texts have been categorized into different story types based on their emotional arc. The texts score high on comprehensibility and represent a wide range of emotional valence and arousal levels. The comparative analysis of the ratings of the original texts and English translations showed that valence ratings were very similar across languages, whereas correlations between the two pairs of language versions for arousal and comprehensibility were modest. Comprehensibility ratings correlated with only some of the readability indexes. The database is published in osf.io/9tga3, and it is freely available for academic research.

Novels and short stories can be seen as motivating and authentic materials in English Language classes (Lazar, 1993). It is because novels and short stories are rich in not only language, but also, cultural aspects of the foreign language. Therefore, novels and short stories may act as great sources of language and culture in English as a foreign language classes. The language instructors’ role is important in teaching English through these sources. By the language instructors, the level and needs of the language learners need to be taken into consideration while selecting and using these literary texts. Researchers such as Byram (1989) and Brown(2007) claim that it is not any possible to separate language and culture from each other, for this reason novels and short stories can be seen as great sources both for language and for culture of the target language. Thanks to literary translation, it really is possible to be aware of other cultures of the world with the help of novels and short stories’ translations. In the following paper, it is aimed to show how using novels and short stories in EFL classes may develop students’ knowledge of English while increasing their cultural awareness. In that sense, togetherness of language and culture in language teaching, novels and short stories in the language classroom and ways to overcome cultural problems while using novels and short stories in EFL classes will be presented.

The article examines the poetry and fiction by Mykola Vingranovskyj in English translations. Attention is paid to the chronological sequence of translations, the figures of translators and the works selected for translation, their equivalence to the original. The first translation of M. Vingranovskyj's fiction (the short story "White Flowers") appeared with the assistance of Yu. Lutsky in Canada and aimed at popularizing Ukrainian literature among students. The short story opens the extremely lyrical world of Mykola Vingranovskyj, where the story revolves not around the event, but around the feelings, which brings the short story closer to poetry. The novella was included to the anthology (Modern Ukrainian Short Stories, 1973) as the example of the prose of the sixties (shistdesyatnyky), which departed from socialist-realist ideological canons and turned to the emotional and expressive potential of artistic language. The translation of Yuri and Moira Lutsky is marked by the desire to convey as fully as possible the author's individual style, including figurative metaphor, to create a text equivalent to the original in communicative orientation. The collection Summer Evening (1987), translated by Anatoliy Bilenko, was published after M. Vingranovskyj was awarded the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine (1984). The collection includes stories for children's audiences, conveying children's perception of the world: Chest, Shaggi, The Gosling, Good Night, What Makes the World Spin, Summer Evening. A. Bilenko's translations are notable for the adequacy of the reproduction of artistic and stylistic features of the original, semantic equivalence. Some translated poems, which emphasize the civic component (Sistine Madonna, To My Sea, On the Golden Table, The First Lullaby, Star Prelude) were included to the anthology of Ukrainian poetry (Anthology of Soviet Ukrainian Poetry, 1982), and Russian translators were involved in translating the poems (Dorian Rottenberg, Michael McGreg), which significantly reduced the artistic value of poetry. During the times of independent Ukraine, competitions for translations to the writer's anniversaries were initiated. However, translated works have not been published in collections and anthologies. Active work on translations of M. Vingranovskyj's works is still ahead.

His translations had a double function: to help him improve his English and to promote him as a writer. He randomly chose some Croatian short stories which he partly translated and partly adapted. He also did his best to introduce the authors to the American readers. The stories were published in American magazines but Adamic's repeated effort to publish a book of Yugoslav translations sadly failed. In spite of this, he was an important groundbreaker in the field paving the way for other translators who followed in his wake.

Abstract The present paper reports on a translation-based teaching-oriented study of the expression of path and manner of motion (Talmy 1972) in English and Spanish. The aim is to explore contrastive differences by analysing translations, with special attention to crossed transposition (Molina and Hurtado Albir 2002), which implies a double shift of part-of-speech from the source text to the target text, and is the expected type of transfer between a satellite-framed language like English and a verb-framed language like Spanish. Two corpora have been used, a monolingual corpus of Children’s Short Stories, the CSS-corpus, and a parallel corpus English-Spanish, P-ACTRES 2.0. The results show a high tendency for implicitation of either path or manner and for compression in the translations into Spanish, whereas crossed transposition is preferred in the translations into English. Also, some pedagogical applications are suggested for including these motion expressions in TEFL to young learners through storytelling.

Mongols have a long and rich tradition of translating literary works from many different countries into Mongolian. Specifically, thousands of literary works from over 100 different countries written in dozens of different languages have been translated into Mongolian. Among these, a large number of Italian literary works have been translated into Mongolian from Russian, English, and Romanian. As for the literary genres of these works, they primarily consist of poetry, prose, and plays (including screenplays). Specifically: 1) Poetry: poems (58 works), songs (1), long poems (3); 2) Prose: folktales (33), authored tales (36), short stories (40), traditional jokes (3), novellas (5), framed stories (1), novels (5); 3) Plays (2), and screenplays (1). In addition, works of non-fiction, including stylized biographical sketches, reminiscences, as well as a political philosophical treatise, have been published. Literary works are generally divided into one of the following two different categories depending on whether they have a specific author or not: a) oral folklore; and b) written literature. The following tasks need to be undertaken to properly study Italian literary works which have been translated into Mongolian and published in Mongolia: A complete bibliography of Italian literary works translated into Mongolian must be compiled, All of the Italian originals must be located and correctly identified, The Russian, English, and Romanian intermediate translations must also be found and carefully consulted, If a work has been translated multiple times by a single translator, the multiple translations must be compared with each other and studied, If a work has been translated multiple times by different translators, the multiple translations must likewise be compared with each other and studied, The Italian originals of poems, songs, tales, and short stories which have been translated into Mongolian should be located and juxtaposed with their translations and published in book format for teaching and research purposes.

The aim of the research is to substantiate the necessity to identify the lexemes that reflect the notion of “encasement” (alienation, estrangement, aloofness of the traditional Chekhov’s hero) in A. Chekhov’s short stories within the framework of formation of a value-semantic model of their English-language translations. The article presents a comprehensive comparative study of the elements that reflect the notion of “encasement” on the basis of A. Chekhov’s short story “The Man in a Case” and some other short stories by the author, as well as their translations into English. The scientific novelty of the research consists in considering the ways of verbal representation in translation of lexical-semantic units of the text thematically grouped according to various aspects of the reflection of “encasement” in the framework of value-semantic modelling of translation. As a result, it has been shown that the archiseme “case” becomes the core of the artistic idea, and the lexemes that convey the notion of “encasement” become the point attractors of the meanings, forming the main value-semantic model that appears in a number of the writer’s works. Based on the analysis of the lexical units conveying the idea of “encasement”, the article proves that in the process of their translation, some deformations associated with interlingual asymmetry may occur.

Purpose: The aim of this research is to look at the idea of mistranslation in English translations of Premchand’s Urdu short stories. The source text is Urdu short stories penned by Premchand and the target text is its English translation. Translating the culture of source language is considered to be one of the most challenging tasks faced by translators. The translators confront several challenges to translate the source culture. Design/Methodology/Approach: The researchers use the model of Newmark in order to analyze the mistranslation from the cultural perspectives. It has always been a heated debate whether the cultural embedded ideas and concepts may be exactly translated into target language or not. Though the translators have been using various strategies in order to translate the culturally specific items both in form of material and expression, they are not fully successful in translating the cultural specific terms and concepts. These culture embedded concepts can be the religious beliefs or social dialogues that are only understandable for the source culture readers. Findings: The study concludes that mistranslation occurs because of many reasons such as translator’s immature knowledge of the two languages, translator’s intentional use of mistranslation, cultural barriers, language differences on lexical level and ideological differences. Implications/Originality/Value: The study also reveals that there are many problems in the translation of the cultural items both in material forms and expressions due to translators, incompetence intercultural pragmatics.

This study aims to investigate the use of deixis in a corpus of translations from twentieth century Romanian literature (novels and short stories) into English. Viewing deixis as an interactive feature of texts, it endeavours to find whether there are significant differences between the use of deixis in source texts and translations, and to see how systematic shifts as well as single occurrences can contribute to the shaping of a translated text which positions the reader in a different way from the source texts. It also explores ways in which the translators position themselves with respect to the text. The study finds that the main tendency is one of distancing, whereby proximal deictics tend to become distals, with the effect that readers will be presented with a translation which elicits less involvement on their part than the original text did in its context.

Our aim with this paper is firstly to survey and outline common translation strategies used in realia words and expressions from Mongolian into English language and secondly, to propose an order of the translation strategies according to their equivalence based on literature translations. In this study, 32 Mongolian short stories translated by foreign and Mongolian translators into English were involved. We collected strategies for realia translation and analyzed how often they are applied in literature translations. Findings of the study showed that 11 strategies (transcribing, calque, neologism, synonymy, explanation, reformulation or equivalence, international word, adjective, modulation, notes and couplets) were offered by most of translation researchers, out of which 6 strategies (transcribing, calque, synonymy, explanatory, reformulation or equivalence, and couplets) are often used in Mongolian into English literature translation. Moreover, translators are using several couplets (transcribing & explanatory, transcribing & calque and equivalence & explanatory) for dealing with some cultural words. In connection with the 32 Mongolian short story translation into English, we attempted to make an order of 4 translation strategies due source language (SL) cultural words, translated by a target (TL). This order starts with reformulation or equivalence, and follows synonymy as well as explanation and ends with couplet.

For this purpose, Russian and English translation of nine short stories, out of many of works by D.Natsagdorj, one of the founders of Mongolia’s contemporary literature, have been selected. By comparing the English, Russian translation of these stories, we examined the types of transformation used in translation of realia, accuracy of translation, distinction among translations by foreign and domestic authors. Main accentuation has been given to identifying more typical strategy of translating Mongolian realia into the above-mentioned languages. Accordingly, the study revealed that transcription, transliteration, description and substitution are the most frequent tools used to render the words and phrases denoting realia.

Throughout history, written and spoken translations have played a crucial role in inter-human communication, providing access to important texts for scholarship and religious purposes. The practice of translating is longestablished, but the discipline of translation studies is new. In academic circles, translation was previously related to just a language-learning activity. The study of literary translation began through comparative literature, translation workshops and contrastive analysis. Translation studies have expanded hugely and are now often considered interdisciplinary. History of Indian Translation in Literature has always been an attempt to reveal the various facts of ancient and modern Indian literature and its effect on the contemporary scene of Indian literature in English. It also highlights and discusses the very nature of translation to the Indians. The notion of translation was encouraged during the colonial period by the British. The translation is culture related. The interpreted approach is the branch of translation which is also known as the 'theory of sense'. This paper aims to analyse the interpretative approach in multilingual composition and translated versions of works of Premchand's selected short stories. Multilingual composition in translated versions of Premchand's short fiction published in Urdu and Hindi and translated into English by different translators over a period of time. It focuses on the translating process, particularly on the nature of meaning as sense- as opposed to linguistic or verbal meaning and the nature of linguistic ambiguities. The resultant theory makes a distinction between implicitness (what the writer intends to say or means) and explicitness (what is said or written).

In this study, I seek to discuss the translation of tenses from Arabic, which does not have a grammatical category for ‘aspect’ to English, which has such a grammatical category. It is hypothesised that in order for the translators to produce an accurate translation and create a similar mental image in the minds of the target language readers, the ‘contextual tense’ should be given serious consideration at the expense of the ‘morphological tense’ or ‘structural tense’. This study proposes a cognitive model for identifying the contextual tense where categories, such as ‘point of emphasis’, ‘state of dividedness’, ‘state of boundedness’, ‘degree of extension’, ‘plexity’, ‘pace and time lapse’ and ‘extent of causation’ are used. To demonstrate how adhering to the morphological tense or structural tense without figuring out the contextual tense may lead to inaccurate translations, ample authentic examples taken from a collection of 12 short stories tilted ‘Modern Arabic Short Stories’ (2008) are used. From the analysis of the primary data, it has been shown that failing to identify the contextual tense leads to an inaccurate translation, thereby creating different mental images in the minds of the target language readers.

Streszczenie:
The importance of a new translation of Karen Blixen’s The African Farm is based on two factors: the book has never been translated from Danish (although the Danish version differs from the English version), and existing translations of the English version contain a number of inaccuracies. Karen Blixen’s book The African Farm was published in English in the UK in 1937 under the title Out of Africa. In the same year, Karen Blixen published the Danish text of the book under the title Den afrikanske farm. This book is not the only example of Karen Blixen’s own translations from English into Danish, as she also translated some of her short stories after their first publication in English. It is still a controversial issue whether her translations may be considered “copies” of the original works or they should be regarded as recreations in Danish. This article presents a comparative analysis of the English and the Danish texts of The African Farm which confirms that we are talking about two different versions of the work, since while creating the Danish text, Karen Blixen used several transformations: transpositions, substitutions, additions and omissions. The notion of “transformation” in this article implies a very wide range of modifications. The author makes significant changes to the original text. The result is a new text with quite a number of differences from English; the text that awaits translation from Danish. Out of Africa has been translated from English into Russian twice. The translations by experienced translators make a significant contribution to the history of literary contacts between Denmark and Russia; however, they contain a number of errors due to misunderstanding of Danish and African realities, as well as disregard for the specific situation. Translation of the Danish version of The African Farm is necessary not only because the Danish version has never been translated into Russian, but also because it would allow for the explication of some themes important for Karen Blixen that were “lost” in the translations from English. The present study does not presuppose consideration of literary aspects. It involves only differences between the Danish and the English versions of the novel, as well as the analysis of existing translations from English.

Abstract This paper investigates the use of existential presuppositions in a corpus of literary translations from Romanian into English (novels and short stories). In particular, we are interested in ascertaining whether there are any differences between the ways in which definiteness and indefiniteness are used in translations compared to source texts, and whether any pattern can be found to be in operation; the aim is to explore presuppositions in terms of what they can tell us about translators’ assumptions about their readers. The main finding is the presence of a [- definite] trend in the corpus, whereby definite references tend to be translated by indefinite references. The study suggests that this is linked to distancing; i.e., target readers are presented with texts which position them as distant observers, rather than in-the-know in-group members.

This study concerns with translation which involves languages that have different linguistic and cultural systems. When a source and target language do not have the same system of language and culture, to some extent, equivalence cannot be directly achieved. By deploying Vinay & Darbelnet’s Modulation (1995) and House’s translation equivalence (2015), this study is to reveal the changes of point of view the translators did in translating texts from Indonesian into English. The data sources of this present study include Indonesian novels and short stories loaded with culture and their English translations. The analysis revealed that to create adequate target texts, the translators changed their points of view through some conditions. The changes include: a) negation of opposite; b) part for the whole; c) abstract for concrete; d) cause for effect; e) active for passive; f) space for time; g) change of symbols; and h) intervals and limits. Changing point of view becomes cultural bridge in the translation which involves languages with different culture.

Student translators at my college take a Media Translation course in which they translate the latest news stories. This study proposes a model for integrating Gaza-Israeli war terminology and texts in translation instruction to familiarize the students with such terminology such as (names of weapons (grenades, mortar, drones, missiles, Merkava, Cornet anti-armor, mortar shells), toponyms (Khan Younis, Maghazi, Sderot, Ashkelon), crossings (Rafah, Erez), Jihadist groups and brigades (Islamic Jihad, Golani), military actions (incursion, bombing, shelling, genocide, displacement) war metaphors (target bank, carpet bombing, scorched earth, fire belt, Philadelphia Axis, Hannibal's plan), (UNRWA, Gaza hospitals, starvation, humanitarian aid) and others. English and Arabic texts can be collected from mainstream media as RT, BBC, CNN, Al-Jazeera and Al-Ghad. A class blog can be created for posting translations, corrections, discussions, and feedback. The students can practice full, summary, and conceptual translation and avoid word-for-word translation. They can watch news stories about the Gaza-Israel war, write a summary translation of it and receive comments and feedback. Beginners can translate short news excerpts (few lines). Students make sure their translations are cohesive, make sense and are easy to read. Students should use Google Translate and artificial intelligence (AI) with caution and should read the same news story in both English and Arabic to get used to the terminology and their equivalents. The instructor serves as a facilitator. Further instructional guidelines and recommendations are given.

Kong Yiji is one of Lu Xun’s representative short stories whose dissemination cannot be separated from the efforts of Chinese and western translators. Created under the background of the collision of old and new cultures, Its cultural connotation and linguistic features bring obstacle for its translation. At present, the most authoritative version are those translated by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, Julia Lovell and William A . Lyell. A comparative study of the translation strategies and methods adopted by the three versions can help translators learn from them. After comparative analysis, it is found that the translation strategies adopted by the three translations are different in dealing with language and cultural differences, among which foreignization is more conducive to presenting the linguistic characteristics of the original text under the premise of ensuring the fluency of the translation.

The paper examines W. von Humboldt’s language antinomies in the context of comparative linguistics and translation. It is noted that some issues of modern translation science were identified and ways to solve them were proposed in W. von Humboldt’s linguistic concept. It is argued that when translating literary works, the translator should rely on the language antinomies identified by W. von Humboldt. This research aims to substantiate the necessity to take into account the language antinomies identified by the German scholar W. von Humboldt in translation science, which is motivated by the vector for the most accurate interpretation of the author’s intention chosen by the translator in the course of translation activities. The scientific novelty of the study is accounted for by an attempt to correct the dominant meanings of the original literary texts taking into account the language antinomies identified by W. von Humboldt and to conduct a comparative analysis of the semantic dominants of the English-language originals and their translations. As a result of the study, it has been found that the language antinomies elaborated by the German linguist W. von Humboldt should be taken into account when translating literary texts in order to identify the implicit meanings of the English-language originals and convey them in translations.

AbstractFutabatei Shimei (1864-1909) was an early modern Japanese novelist, translator, and critic. He wrote what is now generally conceived of as the first Japanese ‘modern’ novel, Drifting Clouds (1887-89). He translated works by Turgenev, Leo Tolstoy, Garshin, Gorky, and others. He also published a number of critical essays, treatises on literary theory, political papers, and so forth. His early translation of Turgenev’s short stories: Aibiki (Rendevous, 1888) and Meguriai (Three Trysts, 1889) were extremely influential on the contemporary literati, who were amazed at the fresh, poetic prose used in stark contrast to the traditional Japanese fiction in the pre-Reformation period. These translations, seen in the light of the present-day readers, were unique in what we might term today ‘foreignizing translation’. Lawrence Venuti in Invisibility of the Translator argues that the ideal of (English) translation has been to conceal itself as a translation, i.e. to present itself as an original text (chap I and passim). In that sense, Futabatei’s translations, scandalously presenting itself as a translation, that is to say, as an alien text, is extremely ‘foreignizing’.

Introduction. The study is focused on English onomatopoeic verbs of motion in the literary texts for children. A comparative analysis of sentences containing this particular semantic group of verbs in the original text and in the corresponding sentences of the translated text is carried out, the main goal being to ascertain whether the translator managed to avoid the loss of iconicity and preserve iconic features of the original verb in the target language translation and to what extent. Methodology and source. The study was conducted on the original texts of 16 short stories for young children by Laura Owen and the texts of their translations into Russian by T. Slavnikova and E. Ukhova. The selection of verbs of motion was carried out in accordance with the dictionary definitions of competent monolingual English dictionaries, which resulted in clasifying all verbs the meaning “movement in space” as verbs of motion. The corpus of studied verbs obtained by continuous sampling from the analysed texts amounted to 201 lexemes, 160 of which being of iconic origin. At the second stage of the reseach, a comparative analysis of original sentences containing onomatopoeic verbs of motion and their contextual translations was perfomed in order to assess the quality of the translation. Results and discussion. A high degree of saturation (79.6 %) of the analyzed original tests with onomatopeic verbs of motion was revealed. The analysis of the translated texts of L. Owen’s stories for kids by T. Slavnikova strongly indicates a realistic possibility of rendering anomatopeic verbs of motion into a target language preserving their iconic essence. Conclusion. It seems apparent that to ensure adequate translation of iconic lexis, translators should be aware of iconicity theory and phonosemantics, as well as acquire skills to effectively apply them in practical translation. Further research of this kind translation might contribute to developing some strategies for translating iconic lexis.

Abstract For many years in ELT methodology the questions of teaching writing in ELT coursebooks have been given much attention in terms of its nature, differences between written and spoken speech, ELT objectives and approaches to teaching writing, types of writing genres, writing assessment. But one rather neglected area in that regard is a graded teaching of creative writing to FL learners. The fifteen-year experience with organizing language-and-culture competitions launched by the Research Centre “Euroschool” for foreign language /FL/ students across Russia have proved that even intermediate FL learners, not to speak about advanced students are quite capable of writing in a FL: a) poems and songs expressing their ideas about teenagers’ lifestyle & visions of contemporary world; b) short stories describing family and school life experiences of their own or their peers; c) essays based on their comparative study of native and foreign cultures; d) presentations of Russian culture & other cultures of the Russian Federation in an English environment while being on exchange visits; e) translations of English poetry, short stories, excerpts from humours books, stripes of comics. The paper compares teaching creative writing in Russian and English, discusses the questions arisen from the outcomes of the language-and-culture competitions, arguing that effective teaching of creative writing presupposes: 1) teaching a FL in the context of the dialogue of cultures and civilizations, 2) introducing creative writing into a FL curriculum, 3) designing a package of thought-provoking teaching materials aiming at developing communicative, intellectual & mediating learners’ powers, 4) applying appropriate assessment scales for observing the dynamics of learners’ development as creative writers, 5) marrying students’ bilingual and crosscultural/ pluricultural classroom activities stimulating their participation in language-and-culture competitions.

Abstract This is the first Italian translation of some selections from the Ëddoštho* “Reminiscences” of Sadriddin Ajnī (Bukhara 1878—Dushanbe 1954), the author commonly regarded as the leading representative of modern Tajik literature. Ajnī’s Reminiscences, divided into four parts and published between 1948 and 1954, are a collection of lively short-stories where the author described his childhood spent in two villages near Bukhara, as well as his youth and schooldays at the madrasa in the last two decades of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Parts I and II were more often translated into many languages, both in the Republics of the former Soviet Union and in other countries. Translations in Russian (parts I-IV), German and French (parts I-II) have appeared in the 1950s. In English, separate chapters from the work have been published in academic journals from the 1950s onward; the most recent English translation (part I) is The sands of Oxus. Boyhood reminiscences of Sadriddin Aini, tr. by J.R. Perry and R. Lehr (Costa Mesa, Mazda Publishers, 1998).

English translations of Pelevin’s short stories and novels are used as a representative background in the research of textual functions of realia. In the novel “Prince of Gosplan” the realia of late Soviet epoch make a bizarre mixture with the elements of virtual reality in a variety of game worlds where the heroes of the text exist. The sphere of the games, as well as the sphere of the Soviet life, has a number of distinct temporal features. The realia incorporated in the text by the author perform a number of important functions: they create the atmosphere of the late Soviet epoch, constitute the time movement in the novel, introduce intertextual allusions, perform at the philosophical and mythological level of the text. The only existing English translation of the novel does not present all these functions. The article includes the classification of the realia, description of their functions, advice to future translators.

This paper explores the cinematic adaptation ‘Mantostaan’, which is a compilation of the four short stories by Saadat Hasan Manto: ‘The Last Salute’, ‘Open It’, ‘The Assignment’, and ‘Colder than Ice’ in the light of Foucault’s Discourse theory. These works are the English translations of Manto’s Urdu works and are taken resort to for deeply observing the visual content of the film adaptation. For Foucault (1977), it is through discourse (through knowledge) that we are created; and that discourse joins power and knowledge, and its power follows from our casual acceptance of the “reality with which we are presented”. The discourse theory is applied on the dialogues exchanged by the characters of the film in the background of the horror during the partition of India occurred in 1947. It also discovers how various kinds of situations, in the turmoil of communal riots, led the characters holding the power position and thus dominating the discourse. The characters of the film thus, driven by their knowledge, create or participate in the discourse. These discourses shape out the situations, consequences of which are faced by the people. Thus, the paper taking into account the partition fracas, focuses upon the situations created by the discourse throughout the time of communal animosity and upon its bewildering aftermaths affecting people’s lives.

Wilkie Collins, one of the most popular Victorian novelists, has been widely acclaimed as the early master of the sensation novel and a pioneer of English detective fiction. Novels such as The Woman in White (1860) and The Moonstone (1868) became best sellers and captivated Victorian readers with their convoluted plots full of mystery, crime and sexuality, usually within the respectable middle-class home. His popularity crossed national and linguistic borders, and his novels, novellas and short stories were soon translated into different languages. In Spain, we find over a dozen of different editions of Collins’s stories already in the nineteenth century, which often appeared serialised in popular journals or magazines, like their original counterparts. One of these early Spanish translations was The Woman in White which, in different forms and with different titles, attracted the attention of many publishers and readers during the twentieth century, despite the obstacles posed by censorship and the hardships of the post-war period. This paper aims to discuss the Spanish publication history and reception of Collins’s sensation novel The Woman in White and analyse the scale of its popularity.

The recent years have witnessed an increasing importance of machine translation systems due to the prolific production on online texts in different disciplines and furthermore, the inability of traditional translation methods in addressing translation needs all over the world. It is even argued that training on translation tools should be integrated into translation pedagogies and ultimately, courses should be provided for students and professionals. In spite of the effectiveness of translation tools and systems in providing solutions in relation to different disciplines and text genres, the usability and reliability of such systems in terms of literary texts, however, is still highly controversial. Many critics and educators still underestimate the usefulness of the machine translation systems in literature, which could be partially attributed to the unique nature of the language of the literary texts. The issue has its pedagogical implications to translation instruction due to the needs to integrate emerging technologies in teaching and learning practices. For proper use of translation technologies in educational contexts, these need to be well evaluated. For this purpose, this study evaluates the usefulness of applying machine translation systems to literature with the purpose of identifying the challenges that may have negative impacts on the reliability of machine translation systems. In order to do this this, two translation systems are selected, namely, Google Translate and Q Translate. By way of illustration, the study is based on a corpus of two English short stories. The study is based on two prose fiction texts. The first is J. K. Rowling’s novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The second is Edgar Allan Poe’s short story The Black Cat. Automatic translations generated by the two machine translation systems were compared to human made Arabic translations with the purpose of identifying the problems within these translations. Results indicate that different lexical, structural, and pragmatic errors are encountered by users which negatively impact the reliability of these translations. Educators and translation instructors need to reflect on the challenges of machine translation systems in relation to literature. Software developers need also to address the problems faced by users and students in the translation from and into the Arabic language.

Books are one of the learning media for children, in this case, specifically, bilingual books were discussed. Bilingual books are used to introduce children to the world of Indonesian and English as well, where the book is used by teachers or parents to read stories for children. Bilingual books are numerous and easily found in various bookstores and online stores. However, the quality of the books is questionable whether the English translation used in the book is correct. In this short article, the author takes the example of 7 children's bilingual story books with 376 sentences in them. The author found that the majority of translations used were word-by-word translation and with complex translation because of the use of sentences that are too long and the vocabulary was not appropriate to use in that context. In fact, story books should be books that were easily read and understood by both those who read and those who listen. With the complexity of these books, it will be difficult for teachers and parents to read and understand, let alone convey them to children. The author suggested publishers and the government to pay more attention to the quality of books by selecting competent writers in their fields.

Bengali ranks among the first ten spoken languages in the world with a native speaker numbering about 230 million people. With UNESCO declaring 21st February as International Mother Language Day to commemorate the laying down of lives by five Bangladeshi students for the cause of their mother tongue, Bengali has come into the radar of worldwide attention . Though significant amount of prose, poetry have been written in Bengali language and large number of newspapers in Bengali get published daily, technically it is still considered a Low Resource Language (LRL) unlike English or French which are High Resource Language (HRL). The reason is not far to seek as corpora in varied domains such as short stories, sports, politics, agriculture etc is less in number and even when they are available, the size is less. Machine translation (MT) is difficult to perform in Bengali as parallel corpora from Bengali to other languages and vice versa is few and far between and when they are available they suffer from the problems of size and quality. This work is aimed at implementing one state of the art model in Neural Machine Translation (NMT) which is called the self-attention transformer model to perform translation from English to Bengali and vice versa. Though a couple of research work has been published in the recent years on MT from English to Bengali, they are mostly domain specific. This paper does not focus on any specific domain for NMT from English to Bengali and as such may be conceived as a more of general domain NMT from English to Bengali which is more difficult than domain specific NMT. Performance evaluation of the model was done using BLEU version-4 vis-à-vis translations of well known English-Bengali MTsystems.

This article seeks to examine how contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction by women from Cuba and Brazil are translated and marketed for Francophone readers. It will focus on Wendy Guerra’s novels, translated into French by Marianne Millon, and on contemporary Brazilian (non) fiction translated into French by Paula Anacaona, the head of Anacaona Éditions, a publishing outlet specialized in Brazilian literature for Francophone readers. The contribution will start with a brief presentation of the French publishing sector and some of the recurring patterns observed in what is often labeled as littérature étrangère or littérature monde (foreign literature and world literature, respectively), exploring various layers of intervention that appear in translated fiction. The article will then further explore the role of paratext in the marketing of Caribbean literatures for (non-)metropolitan French audiences, before it examines the translations of Todos se van and Domingo de Revolución by Cuban writer Wendy Guerra. Paratextual matter in Marianne Millon’s Tout le monde s’en va and Un dimanche de révolution will be analyzed as a site of feminine co-production, in which the author and the translator’s voices at times collide in unison and at others create dissonance. In the case of Domingo de revolución, the French translator’s practices will be compared to Cuban-American Achy Obejas’s English translation (Revolution Sunday), in the hope of highlighting varying degrees of cultural appropriation and/or acculturation, depending on the translator’s habitus and trajectory (Bourdieu) and her own background. These reflections will lead to a broader analysis of paratext as a site of further agency and potential redress as (Afro-) Brazilian history and literature are examined in works circulated by writer/translator/publisher Paula Anacaona. Ultimately, figures traditionally sidelined from hegemonic and patriarchal (his)stories, whose voices are restored in Anacaona’s paratextual practices, will serve as illustrations of feminine publishing practices that challenge (phallo-)centric models from the metropolis.

Consolidating the Universe. Translation Criticism among Contexts of Translational Reception of H.P. Lovecraft’s Poetry in Poland The article discusses the influence of translator’s criticism and other extra-textual factors on the translations of poetry by Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Since the very first renditions of his Fungi from Yuggoth sonnets by Jerzy Płudowski and Leszek Lachowiecki included in two anthologies of horror poetry, Polish versions of Lovecraft’s verses have always been modified in the process of interlinguistic transfer according to either sole preferences of the publishing houses and evaluations proposed by critics of the English originals or the translators’ reception of the previous Polish variants. In most cases these modifications resulted from more or less stereotypical visions of the American writer held by the translators and were aimed at establishing links to his other works already published in Poland (short stories, essays, letters). Thus effects of the semantic shifts, detectable also in the latest variants by Krzysztof Azarewicz and Mateusz Kopacz, can be referred to as consolidating the universe of the writer’s biographical legend and literary works which is more coherent in the Polish target texts than in the originals.

Apart from referring to a geographical or physical border, the notion of frontera has also become a metaphorical or psychological construct which represents any situation of contrast, such as belonging to two different national, cultural or linguistic communities. Latino writers in the United States live and write on the frontera. The coming together of two cultures forges a new hybrid identity which fights against essentialism and homogenization. This hybrid identity is reflected in these writers’ language, a border tongue constantly switching from English to Spanish. Sandra Cisneros is one of those Latina writers who resort to code-switching as an identity hallmark. By introducing Spanish words, phrases or syntactic constructions into her English texts, Cisneros tries to evoke the feeling of inhabiting two worlds which can be conflicting and complementary at the same time. Departing from the notion of frontera, several translations of Cisneros’s works are analysed, paying special attention to those aspects related to identity and language. Particularly, I focus on the Mexican Spanish, Galician and Catalan versions of The House on Mango Street, the translation of Woman Hollering Creek into Mexican Spanish, the Catalan versions of several short stories from Woman Hollering Creek and the Galician translation of Loose Woman. In all the analysed versions, the translators use strategies which reflect the border identity present in the source text, such as the resource to code-switching and typographical markers or the use of calques and other borrowings, dialectalisms, and non-standard vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar.

Listen to those silences: translating, communicating and reflecting Entendez-vous dans les montagnes…by Maïssa Bey, in Italian and English Maïssa Bey is a French-speaking Algerian writer whose first works were published in the 1990s, during the "black decade" of the civil war that ravaged Algeria. Algerian people, especially women, of whom the author is an integral part, are the protagonists of her stories and novels that aim to break the silences and censorship, to explore the small stories hidden behind the big story. This article aims to analyse the Italian and English translations of Entendez-vous dans les montagnes..., a novel published in France in 2002 and in Algeria in 2007. The Italian translation, published by Astarte in 2020, is by Barbara Sommovigo, who had already translated Bey’s Puisque mon coeur est mort in 2013, initiating an almost paradigmatic author-translator relationship that allows for an effective approach to a short but complex text like Entendez- vous dans les montagnes... The English translation is by the American Erin Lamm, and is the result of her doctoral thesis, with a clearly more academic intention than the Italian text, whose publishing house Astarte aims to communicate voices from the shores of the Mediterranean. In fact, Bey's work travels between two languages and therefore between two cultures, the French and the Algerian, which intersect in the pages of the story like the lives of the three protagonists. An Algerian woman, an elderly Frenchman and Marie, a young blond woman, meet in the same compartment of a train to evoke memories and thoughts, which lead them to the past and recent history of Algeria, through painful pages among which is evoked the loss of the author's father, killed in 1957 by French soldiers. It is a difficult task for the translators to render this multiplicity of themes and languages from the title: for a French-speaking reader, there is a strong reference to both a line from the Marseillaise and an Algerian patriotic song (Min Djibalina). The Italian title is therefore changed to Dietro quei silenzi…, while the English title is purely literal, Do You Hear in the Mountains... This is just one of the translation choices that will be analysed in this paper, in which the comparison between the strategies and techniques used in the two translation works will be constant, creating a perpetual dialogue with the original text, in the image of the friendship that now exists between the author Maïssa Bey and the two translators.

Streszczenie:
In 1787, Grímur Thorkelin, the secretary of the Arnamagnæan Commission, gave the manuscript collector Thomas Astle two paper manuscripts and a parchment bifolium. After Astle’s death, these manuscripts found their way into the Stowe collection and are now kept in the British Library. The paper manuscripts contain transcriptions of texts found in a manuscript in the Arnamagnæan collection and were probably written by Thorkelin himself. The bifolium was, however, written in the fourteenth century. It contains a compilation of short stories about English bishops, mostly archbishops of Canterbury, preceded by a short prologue. For the compilation, the compiler has gathered and adapted material from sources that were already available in Old Norse-Icelandic translations, including Árni Lárentíusson’s Dunstanus saga. However, not all the texts in the compilation are known to exist elsewhere in Icelandic translation. An examination shows that the bifolium was written by the same scribe who wrote parts of Reynistaðarbók in AM 764 4to, and a closer look reveals that the bifolium was once a part of that same manuscript. The last narrative on the bifolium tells the life of St Cuthbert, but its conclusion is now at the top of f. 36r in AM 764 4to. Furthermore, catalogues of the Arnamagnæan collection compiled in the first third of the seventeenth century show that tales about archbishops of Canterbury were included in AM 764 4to, but they are now missing. It thus appears that Thorkelin, who had easy access to Arnamagnæan manuscripts, removed the bifolium before journeying to England, causing its text to fall into oblivion for over two centuries. In the article, the history of the bifolium is discussed, and the script and orthography of its scribe examined and compared to that of scribe E in AM 764 4to. The sources of the compilation’s texts are traced, and the compiler’s methods are analysed. Finally, a diplomatic edition of the texts of the compilation that is now split between the Stowe bifolium and AM 764 4to is presented.

В статье рассматривается функциональность фотографического экфрасиса в малой прозе современных англо-американских писателей. В качестве материала исследования выступают непереведенные на русский язык репрезентативные рассказы Джонатана Коу Ivy and her nonsense (1995) и Пола Остера Auggie Wren’s Christmas story (1990). The article deals with the functionality of photographic ekphrasis in short prose by contemporary Anglo-American writers. The materials for the research are quite representative stories by Jonathan Coe Ivy and Her Nonsense (1995) and Paul Auster’s Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story (1990) (no Russian translations have been published). The authors of the article consider these works from the point of view of the classical Christmas tale genre and observe such preserved features of the Christmas story as the timing of events to the Christmas season, the theme of the family, the main character who is a child or an adult in a state of spiritual crisis, representatives of the infernal world, a Christmas gift, a miracle, return to God through prayer, the voice of a storyteller, a happy ending, and a moral, or “Christmas philosophy”. Using the comparative method, the authors conclude that J. Coe and P. Auster, on the one hand, follow the rich British tradition of Christmas tales originating in the 19th century, and on the other hand, reconsider its potential, introducing photography as a special philosophical and aesthetic category. Photographic ekphrasis is one of the main narrative strategies in artistic practice of the late 20th — early 21st centuries. That is why special attention is paid to the functioning of the genre at various poetological levels, although preserving the genre-defining functions. The research conducted makes it possible to attribute the two stories to the genre of photo-enhanced Christmas stories, as artistic experiments, due to the great influence of postmodern aesthetics and the originality of the artistic method of each writer. The results of the current study can be applied in study of Christmas prose written by modern English-language authors and related to the current-time context.

Streszczenie:
AbstractThis study investigates the translation of Emirati culture-specific items (CSIs) into English, a rarely discussed topic in Arabic translation studies. It focuses on a collection of short stories, Dubai Tales, authored by renowned Emirati author Mohammed Al Murr and translated into English by Peter Clark. The short stories vividly portray Emirati daily life, relationships and cultural values, making it an ideal set of data for a case study of translation strategies. With the emergence of the United Arab Emirates as a global multicultural hub, the demand for effective translations of Emirati literature, including CSIs, is growing. Translating effectively will not only ensure linguistic accessibility but also facilitate better worldwide communication of the unique cultural nuances woven into Emirati narratives. The study conducts quantitative and qualitative analyses of Clark’s English translation by drawing on Newmark’s (1988) cultural categories and Davies’s (2003) framework for translation strategies. The analysis revealed that Clark used globalisation, a domestication strategy, to translate most CSIs into English as well as preservation, a foreignisation strategy, to infuse exotic texture. This strategy reflected a careful balancing act aimed at reaching a wide audience while maintaining cultural elements. This study thus offers invaluable insights highlighting the dynamic relationship between culture and language in literary translations, with a special focus on the Emirati context.
