AbstractThis study examines the surface wind characteristics of Brazil on the basis of the location of the maximum high pressure center in the South Atlantic basin (SAB), known as the South Atlantic anticyclone (SAA), from three reanalysis datasets for the period of 1980–2014. Linear wind speed trends determined for Brazil are geographically related to surface and macroscale atmospheric conditions found in the SAB. The daily mean position of the SAA exhibited a latitudinal poleward shift for all seasons, and a longitudinal trend was dependent upon extratropical activity found in the SAB. Results also show that wind speed and sea level pressure for northern Brazil are dependent upon the latitudinal position of the SAA. Consequently, surface wind correlations for southern Brazil tend to be related to changes in the longitudinal position of the SAA, which result from transient anticyclones migrating over the SAB. An examination of positive and negative wind anomalies shows that shifts in the position of the SAA are coupled with changes in sea level pressure for northern Brazil and air temperature for southern Brazil. From these findings, a surface wind analysis was performed to demonstrate how the geographical location of the SAA affects wind speed anomalies across Brazil and the SAB. Results from this study can assist in understanding how atmospheric systems change within the SAB so that forthcoming socioeconomic and climate-related causes of wind for the country of Brazil can be known.

ABSTRACT Serum amyloid A (SAA), a plasma protein inducible in response to many inflammatory conditions, is associated with the pathogenesis of several diseases including reactive amyloidosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis. We have previously reported an element of the SAA promoter, designated SAA-activating sequence (SAS), that is involved in the inflammation-induced SAA expression, and a nuclear factor, SAS-binding factor (SAF), that interacts with the SAS element has been identified previously (A. Ray and B. K. Ray, Mol. Cell. Biol. 16:1584–1594, 1996). To evaluate how SAF is involved in SAA promoter activation, we have investigated structural features and functional characteristics of this transcription factor. Our studies indicate that SAF belongs to a family of transcription factors characterized by the presence of multiple zinc finger motifs of the Cys2-His2 type at the carboxyl end. Of the three cloned SAF cDNAs (SAF-1, SAF-5, and SAF-8), SAF-1 isoform showed a high degree of homology to MAZ/ZF87/Pur-1 protein while SAF-5 and SAF-8 isoforms are unique and are related to SAF-1/MAZ/ZF87/Pur-1 at the zinc finger domains but different elsewhere. Although structurally distinct, all members are capable of activating SAS element-mediated expression and display virtually identical sequence specificities. However, varying levels of expression of members of this gene family were observed in different tissues. Functional activity of SAF is regulated by a posttranslational event as SAF DNA-binding and transactivation abilities are increased by a protein phosphatase inhibitor, okadaic acid, and inhibited by a protein kinase inhibitor, H7. Consistent with this observation, increased DNA binding of the cloned SAF and its hyperphosphorylation, in response to okadaic acid treatment of the transfected cells, were observed. Taken together, our results suggest that, in addition to tissue-specific expression, SAFs, a family of zinc finger transcription factors, undergo a modification by a posttranslational event that confers their SAA promoter-binding activity and transactivation potential.

Avaliar a qualidade da água consumida pela população urbana oriunda de sistemas de abastecimento de água (SAA) e de solução alternativa coletiva (SAC) de captação subterrânea. Trata-se de estudo observacional, quantitativo, retrospectivo, a partir de amostras de água coletadas de janeiro de 2018 a dezembro de 2019, mensalmente, pela vigilância da qualidade da água para consumo humano. As amostras foram analisadas para cloro residual livre (CRL), fluoreto, turbidez, coliformes totais e Escherichia coli (EC) e distribuídas, segundo estação do ano. O SAA apresentou inconformidade nas amostras: 7,5 % de CRL, 19,6% de fluoreto e 1,9 % de EC. As amostras coletadas em SAC estiveram fora do padrão de potabilidade em: 59,3% de CRL, 9,7% de coliformes totais e 5,3% de EC. SAC apresentou maior contaminação ambiental e fecal do que o SAA, que pode ser explicada pelo percentual elevado de CRL abaixo do recomendado pela legislação. A subfluoretação da SAA reduziu-se ao longo do estudo. A qualidade da água destinada ao consumo humano na zona urbana proveniente de captação subterrânea, distribuída por meio de SAC não é equivalente a água distribuída por SAA, uma vez que a primeira demonstrou maior vulnerabilidade à contaminação microbiológica.

Based on a long-time series (1982–2015) of remote sensing data, we analyzed the change in surface albedo (SAL) during summer (from December to the following February) for the entire Antarctic Sea Ice Region (ASIR) and five longitudinal sectors around Antarctica: (1). the Weddell Sea (WS), (2). Indian Ocean, (3). Pacific Ocean (PO), (4). Ross Sea, and (5). Bellingshausen–Amundsen Sea (BS). Empirical mode decomposition was used to extract the trend of the original signal, and then a slope test method was utilized to identify a transition point. The SAL provided by the CM SAF cloud, Albedo, and Surface Radiation dataset from AVHRR data-Second Edition was validated at Neumayer station. Sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea surface temperature (SST) were also analyzed. The trend of the SAL/SIC was positive during summer over the ASIR and five longitudinal sectors, except for the BS (−2.926% and −4.596% per decade for SAL and SIC, correspondingly). Moreover, the largest increasing trend of SAL and SIC appeared in the PO at approximately 3.781% and 3.358% per decade, respectively. However, the decreasing trend of SAL/SIC in the BS slowed down, and the increasing trend of SAL/SIC in the PO accelerated. The trend curves of the SST exhibited a crest around 2000–2005; thus, the slope lines of the SST showed an increasing–decreasing type for the ASIR and the five longitudinal sectors. The evolution of summer albedo decreased rapidly in the early summer and then maintained a relatively stable level for the whole ASIR. The change of it mainly depended on the early melt of sea ice during the entire summer. The change of sea ice albedo had a narrow range when compared with composite albedo and SIC over the five longitudinal sectors and reached a stable level earlier. The transition point of SAL/SIC in several sectors appeared around the year 2000, whereas that of the SST for the entire ASIR occurred in 2003–2005. A high value of SAL/SIC and a low value of the SST existed in the WS which can be displayed by the spatial distribution of pixel average. In addition, the lower the latitude was, the lower the SAL/SIC and the higher the SST would be. A transition point of SAL appeared in 2001 in most areas of West Antarctica. This transition point could be illustrated by anomaly maps. The spatial distribution of the pixel-based trend of SAL demonstrated that the change in SAL in East Antarctica has exhibited a positive trend in recent decades. However, in West Antarctica, the change of SAL presented a decreasing trend before 2001 and transformed into an increasing trend afterward, especially in the east of the Antarctic Peninsula.

This study aimed to evaluate the replacement of palm oil (P) with increasing levels of soybean acid oil (SA), a by-product of soybean oil (S) refining, on lipid class content and fatty acid (FA) digestibility in the intestine and excreta of chickens at 11 and 35 days (d). Five experimental diets were obtained by supplementing a basal diet with 6% of P (P6), 6% of SA (SA6), 4% of P + 2% SA (P4-SA2), 2% of P + 4% of SA (P2-SA4) and 6% of S (S6). A total of 480 one-d-old female broiler chickens (Ross 308) were housed in metabolic cages (6 cages/treatment, with 16 birds/cage). Replacing P with SA improved fat absorption at 11 and 35 d (p < 0.05), but not feed AME values and saturated FA (SFA) digestibility at 11 d. As age increased, the absorption of SFA and free fatty acids (FFA) improved, and the contribution of the upper ileum to FA absorption increased (p < 0.05). At 35 d, SA6 (56% FFA) and P2-SA4 (40% FFA, 2.6 unsaturated-to-saturated FA ratio) could replace S6 without impairing fat utilization. The replacement of P with SA represents a suitable strategy to use this by-product.

Abstract The serum amyloid A (SAA) protein has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several chronic inflammatory diseases. Its induction mechanism in response to a chronic inflammatory condition was investigated in rabbits following multiple s.c. injections of AgNO3 over a period of 35 days. During unremitting exposure to inflammatory stimulus, a persistently higher than normal level of SAA2 expression was seen in multiple tissues. Induction of SAA was correlated with higher levels of several transcription factor activities. Increased SAA-activating factor (SAF) activity was detected in the liver, lung, and brain tissues under both acute and chronic inflammatory conditions. In the heart, kidney, and skeletal muscle tissues, this activity remained virtually constant. In contrast, CCAAT enhancer binding protein (C/EBP) DNA-binding activity was transiently induced in selective tissues. Higher than normal NF-κB DNA-binding activity was detected in the lung and to a lesser extent in the liver and kidney tissues under both acute and chronic conditions. This result suggested that C/EBP, SAF, and NF-κB are required for transient acute phase induction of SAA whereas SAF and NF-κB activities are necessary for persistent SAA expression during chronic inflammatory conditions.

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a plasma protein which has been associated with several diseases, including amyloidosis, arthritis, and atherosclerosis, and its abnormal expression, particularly in nonhepatic cells, is implicated in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Transfection and DNA-binding studies were performed to investigate the mechanism controlling cytokine-induced, nonhepatic expression of the SAA gene. We have identified a novel promoter, located between positions -280 and 224, that confers interleukin-6 (IL-6) inducibility to an SAA-chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter gene in both nonhepatic and hepatic cells. DNase I protection assays revealed, within this region, three homologous highly pyrimidine rich octanucleotide sequence motifs, termed SAA-activating sequences (SAS). Specific mutations within these three SAS motifs severely reduced IL-6-mediated induction of the reporter gene in transfected nonhepatic cells but not in liver cells. A nuclear factor activated by IL-6 in both hepatic and nonhepatic cells efficiently interacts with the SAS. The induction kinetics and cycloheximide sensitivity of this SAS-binding factor (SAF) suggested that de novo synthesis of this factor itself or an activator protein is essential. Loss of DNA-binding ability as a result of in vitro dephosphorylation, induction of SAA-chloramphenicol acetyltransferase reporter gene activity in the presence of genistein, a protein kinase inhibitor, further indicate that a phosphorylation step is necessary for the activation of SAF. Our results suggest that SAF is a key regulator of cytokine-mediated SAA gene expression in some nonhepatic cells.

ABSTRACTStaphylococcus aureussuperantigens (SAgs) are highly potent T cell mitogens. Antibodies against non-enterotoxin gene cluster (non-egc) SAgs are common in healthy adults, whereas neutralizing antibodies againstegcSAgs are rare. We investigated the infectingS. aureusstrains and the anti-SAg antibody response duringS. aureusbacteremia (SAB). This prospective clinical study (www.clinicaltrials.gov,NCT00548002) included 43 injection drug users (IDUs) and 44 group-matched nonaddicts with SAB.spagenotypes and SAg gene patterns (multiplex PCR) of theS. aureusisolates were determined. The neutralizing capacities of sera obtained at the acute phase and the convalescent phase of SAB were tested against the SAg cocktail of the respective infecting strain and a panel of recombinant SAgs. The lineages CC59 and CC30 were more prevalent among bacteremia strains from IDUs than among strains from nonaddicts. SAg gene patterns in isolates from IDUs and nonaddicts were similar. At the acute phase of bacteremia, IDUs had more neutralizing antibodies against non-egcSAgs than did nonaddicts. Antibody titers frequently increased during infection. In contrast, there were no neutralizing antibodies againstegcSAgs at disease onset and such antibodies were not induced by SAB. SAB triggers an antibody response only against non-egcSAgs. Preimmunization in IDU patients is probably due to previous exposure to the infecting strain.

O forte controle estrutural exercido sobre a deposição dos carbonatos da Formação Barra Velha (Aptiano), Pré-sal da Bacia de Santos, durante as fases rifte e sag condicionou os processos estratigráficos e sedimentológicos que controlaram a distribuição e a qualidade desses reservatórios. O entendimento de como e com que intensidade a evolução estrutural impactou a distribuição das fácies carbonáticas é crucial para se fazer um mapeamento preditivo dos reservatórios. O presente estudo foi desenvolvido na área de Iracema, campo de Tupi, onde foram mapeados cinco horizontes sísmicos e 74 falhas objetivando a caracterização e restauração estrutural e a reconstrução da paleogeografia dos reservatórios à época da deposição da Formação Barra Velha, se restringindo ao intervalo depositado durante a fase sag da bacia. Foi construída uma superfície de paleobatimetria para os horizontes restaurados referentes aos limites basais dos intervalos sag inferior e sag superior, considerando as profundidades de deposição dos carbonatos com base em depósitos análogos recentes, de acordo com estudos anteriores realizados na própria bacia. Para exemplificar a aplicação da análise paleobatimétrica realizada, foi conduzida uma modelagem de processos estratigráficos e sedimentológicos no intervalo superior da fase sag, permitindo reproduzir cenários da arquitetura interna da plataforma carbonática. Os resultados demonstram que a restauração realizada apresenta uma melhor e preditiva caracterização faciológica do reservatório, que irá orientar a definição da distribuição de porosidade e permeabilidade em trabalhos de caracterização 3D do reservatório.

Corrosion represents the single most frequent cause for product replacement or loss of product functionality with a 5% coat to the industrial revenue generation of any country in this dissertation the efficacy of using filled coatings as a protection coating are investigated. Fillers disrupt the polymer-substrate coating interfacial area and lead to poor adhesion. Conflicting benefits of increasing surface hardness and corrosion with long term durability through loss of adhesion to the substrate are investigated. The effects of filler type, filler concentration and exposure to harsh environments such as supercritical carbon dioxide on salt water corrosion are systematically investigated. The constants maintained in the design of experiments were the substrate, AISI-SAE 1018 steel substrate, and the corrosive fluid synthetic sea salt solution (4.2 wt%) and the polymer, Bismaleimide (BMI). Adhesion strength through pull-off, lap shear and shear peel tests were determined. Corrosion using Tafel plots and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was conducted. Vickers hardness was used to determine mechanical strength of the coatings. SEM and optical microscopy were used to examine dispersion and coating integrity. A comparison of fillers such as alumina, silica, hexagonal boron nitride, and organophilic montmorillonite clay (OMMT) at different concentrations revealed OMMT to be most effective with the least decrease in adhesion from filler-substrate contact. Subsequently examining filler concentration, a 3 wt% OMMT was found to be most effective. A comparison of unmodified and modified BMI with 3 wt% OMMT exposed and not exposed to supercritical carbon dioxide showed that the BMI provided better corrosion protection; however, OMMT provided better wear, shear, and hardness performance.

El principal objetivo del presente trabajo de título es evaluar, mediante simulación, la respuesta dinámica de un molino tipo SAG con motor de anillo, en distintas situaciones operacionales. La tarea fue desarrollada bajo condiciones lineales de rigidez y el método de elementos finitos, utilizando la plataforma computacional ANSYS. En particular, se buscó la caracterización de los puntos críticos del equipo, tanto en el plano estructural como dinámico, es decir, fueron definidas las combinaciones de variables mecánicas, como deformaciones, esfuerzos, rigideces, velocidades de rotación del molino, frecuencias naturales y modos normales, que en conjunto denotan potenciales anomalías operacionales o fallas, con un enfoque especial en la variación del espacio de aire presente entre el estator y el rotor del equipo. Para esto se efectuó un análisis estructural, de rigidez, modal y finalmente un análisis de colapso de entrehierro. Paralelamente fue planteada una metodología de análisis clara y reproducible, mediante un protocolo de etapas e implementaciones técnicas utilizadas. La importancia de la realización de un análisis de estas características, se funda en la reducida oferta que este tipo de estudios posee a nivel mundial y la presente situación de la industria minera nacional, en donde un número considerable de molinos SAG con motor tipo anillo, ha sufrido fallas en su operación. El principal fenómeno mecánico estudiado en este trabajo son los denominados esfuerzos radiales excéntricos, generados por la interacción magnética entre el rotor y el estator del molino. Los factores predominantes en la existencia de estos esfuerzos, son inevitables fallas de montaje del equipo y las deformaciones que este sufre en operación. Éste último factor se refiere directamente a la magnitud de la rigidez global del sistema y a la de sus componentes. Los resultados finales del trabajo mostraron una disminución del 51% de la rigidez horizontal global respecto de la vertical. Particularmente se observa una notable asimetría de la rigidez del estator e importantes deformaciones. En términos cuasi-estáticos el espacio de aire estator-rotor no alcanza variaciones alarmantes, sin embargo, incorporando los resultados obtenidos en el análisis modal, existen dos modos normales del sistema (#4 y #5) que perjudican notablemente esta dimensión, cuyas frecuencias naturales se encuentran cercanas a dos fuentes excitatorias del sistema, en condiciones nominales de operación. Se concluye que los puntos críticos del equipo están directamente relacionados con dos modos normales del sistema, los que alteran directamente el espacio de aire estator-rotor. Especial énfasis como potencial de falla se le entrega al modo #5, dada su reducida capacidad de amortiguamiento. En términos estructurales el protagonista de las mayores debilidades y asimetrías en su rigidez, es el estator. Sin pretender asegurar que estas son las causas de las fallas de los equipos en faena, se pretende acotar el problema y establecer estos focos críticos como hipótesis de estudios de mayor complejidad. En términos generales, también se concluye que la simulación es una herramienta potente, que en buen uso, entrega información valiosa en estudios ingenieriles.

The acute phase protein serum amyloid A (SAA) is a biomarker for acute inflammation, however there is growing evidence to suggest that this protein has bioactivity that contributes to the inflammatory process in disease states such as atherosclerosis whereby endothelial dysfunction is initiated. The data generated in this thesis shows that SAA can elicit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumour necrosis factor (TNF), tissue factor (TF), interleukin-6 from human endothelial cell lines. The downstream molecular pathways of SAA is a well-characterised series of pro-inflammatory mediators involving the canonical transcription factor NFкB. pathways involving the canonical transcription factor NFкB pathway. Upon direct inhibition of NFкB using a pharmacological inhibitor (BAY11-7082), significant downregulation of pro-inflammatory genes and corresponding proteins was demonstrated. However, translation of the drug into clinical use is hampered by serious side effects. Therefore, alternative targets to the downstream pathway of SAA activation were also inhibited. Firstly, we attempted to use an endogenously expressed HDL, a lipoprotein that is proposed to ameliorate SAA bioactivity. That data generated appeared to be paradoxical and HDL was unable to act as a “molecular mop” to inhibit SAA activity. Further studies aimed to target reactive oxygen species (ROS) using a nitroxide which is a ROS scavenger. We provided proof of principle that the nitroxide TEMPOL was able to scavenge SAA-induced ROS. Further work will be required to validate the vaso-protective activity of the nitroxide class of drugs. If proven this may offer an alternative/adjunctive therapy for vascular inflammation elicited by SAA.

O alvo principal deste estudo foi avaliar como a salinidade e/ou a exposição à atrazina, interagem com sistemas de biotransformação e de resposta ao stress oxidativo, hepáticos e branquiais de Petromyzon marinus L., no início da sua fase de migração trófica. A origem geográfica e a aclimatação à salinidade geraram resultados com maior contraste nos parâmetros hepáticos e branquiais de transformers capturados nas bacias do Lima e do Vouga, motivo que determinou a sua seleção como bacia pristina e bacia com indicadores de maior exposição a xenobióticos, respetivamente. A segregação de transformers das bacias do Lima e do Vouga em grupos distintos, tendo em consideração a sua origem geográfica e/ou a resposta a salinidade 10, 25 e 35, pelos sistemas de biotransformação e de resposta ao stress oxidativo, confirmou as conclusões preliminares. A exposição a atrazina (50 e/ou 100 μg/L), em ambiente dulçaquícola, perturbou a capacidade de metabolização de xenobióticos e de resposta ao stress pelos efetivos da bacia do Lima, ilustrada pelo decréscimo do índice HSI e da razão GSH/GSSG citoplasmática branquial ou pelo aumento do conteúdo em MDA citoplasmático e mitocondrial hepático, de ROS citoplasmático branquial, de ROS e MDA mitocondrial branquial, bem como pelo decréscimo das atividades enzimáticas CPR microssomal, cGST, GPx e GR do citoplasma hepático. Assim, a exposição acidental ou permanentemente a níveis de atrazina iguais ou superiores a 50 μg/L poderá comprometer a migração trófica de juvenis de lampreia-marinha. A exposição à atrazina (50 μg/L) em ambiente salino provocou um decréscimo dos índices HSI e GLSI, das atividades CTT1 hepática e UDPGT branquial, bem como o aumento do conteúdo em GSSG e ROS citoplasmáticos branquiais de transformers do Lima, perturbações hepáticas e branquiais, que poderão igualmente comprometer, ainda que de forma mais atenuada, o sucesso da migração trófica de juvenis de P. marinus L; Systems of biotransformation and stress response of Petromyzon marinus L Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to evaluate how salinity and/or atrazine exposure interact with hepatic and branchial systems of biotransformation and oxidative stress response of Petromyzon marinus L., at the beginning of its trophic migration phase. The geographic origin and the acclimation to the salinity generated results with greater contrast in the hepatic and gill parameters of transformers captured in the Lima and Vouga basins, which determined their selection as pristine basin and basin with indicators of greater exposure to xenobiotics, respectively. The segregation of transformers from the Lima and Vouga basins into distinct groups, taking in account their geographic origin and/or its response to salinity 10, 25 and 35, by the systems of biotransformation and oxidative stress response, confirmed the early conclusions. Exposure of sea lamprey juveniles to atrazine (50 and/or 100 μg/L) in the fresh water, disrupted the capacity of xenobiotics metabolism and stress response of the animals of Lima basin, showed by the decrease in HSI index and cytoplasmic GSH/GSSG ratio of gills or by the increase in the contents of cytoplasmic and mitochondrial MDA of liver, cytoplasmic ROS of gills, mitochondrial ROS and mitochondrial MDA of gills, as well as the decrease in the microsomal CPR and cytoplasmic cGST, GPx and GR enzyme activities of liver. Thus, accidental or permanent exposure to 50 μg/L atrazine levels or higher, may compromise the trophic migration of sea lamprey juveniles. Exposure to atrazine (50 μg/L) in saline environment resulted in a decrease in the HSI and GLSI indexes, hepatic CTT1 and gills UDPGT activities, as well as the increase in cytoplasmic GSSG and ROS of gills of Lima transformers, which may also compromise, even though more attenuated, the success of the trophic migration of juveniles of P. marinus L.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis covers the development of a transformerless series dip compensator. Of all known power quality problems, voltage dips are the greatest reason for concern. Series injection dip compensators offer the advantage of only having to compensate for the decrease in supply voltage during a dip. This results in significant reduction in converter ratings and energy storage requirements. The aim of this thesis was to take up previous developments and combine them with new technologies to maximize their functionality. The new design was implemented with ultracapacitors to offer a maintenance-free device lifespan of 20 years. As they are very expensive, a new topology was introduced in this thesis to maximize their use so that they become viable for industry. Furthermore, a new method of daisy chaining switches was introduced to minimize costs involved in controlling them. A single-phase compensator, with this new topology and the new way of controlling switches, was designed and built according to specifications stated by Eskom. This ultracapacitor-based dip compensator was tested with a dip generator, developed by the University of Stellenbosch for different load currents. The experimental results confirmed simulations made with identical parameters. This thesis presents a reliable and cost effective solution for dip compensation.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie tesis dek die ontwikkeling van ’n transformatorlose duik kompenseerder. Van al die bekende toevoerkwaliteit probleme wek duike in die spanning die meeste kommer. Serie-injeksie kompenseerders het die voordeel dat hulle net kompenseer vir die verlies in die toevoerspanning tydens die duik. Dit het ’n beduidende vermindering in die omsetterkenwaardes en energiestoorvereistes tot gevolg. Hierdie tesis mik om vorige soortgelyke ontwikkelings op te volg en te verbeter met nuwe tegnologie om die funktionliteit te maksimeer. Die ontwerp is geimplementeer met ultrakapasitore wat die onderhoudsvrye toestel ‘n leeftyd van 20 jaar toelaat. Omdat ultrakapasitore so duur is moes ‘n nuwe topologie onwikkel word om die gebruik van ultrakapasitore meer ekonomies aantreklik te maak. Daar is ook ‘n nuwe manier van skakelaar beheer ontwikkel wat toelaat dat baie skakelaars oor een optise veesel beheer kan word. ‘n Enkel fase dip kompensaeerder is toe onwikkel en gebou volgens Eskom se spesifikasies. Die ultrakapasitor gebaseerde omsetter is getoets met ‘n dip generator wat deur die Universiteit van Stellenbosch ontwikkel is. Die praktiese resultate bevestig die simulasies wat gedoen is met dieselfe parameters. Hierdie tesis lei tot ‘n betroubaare en ekonomiese oplossing vir duik kompensasie.

A study of the use of solution adaptive grid (SAG) method for simulations of incompressible flows is carried out in this work. Both laminar and turbulent types of flows are chosen. Investigation on laminar flow simulation starts with mesh adaptation criteria that are based on strong changes of some selected flow parameters; pressure and velocity components. Three most common laminar types of flows are studied; flow in a circular pipe, flow in a channel with sudden expansion and flow in a cavity with a moving lid. It is found that with the use of SAG, a reduction in both computational grid nodes and CPU time can be obtained when compared to those of fixed grid while satisfactory solutions are also achievable. Nevertheless, the refinement criteria setup procedure reveals inconveniences and requirement for several judgments that have to be defined ‘ad hoc’. This hence, makes the refinement criteria dubious for real engineering applications. For the study of turbulent flows with large eddy simulation (LES) and implicit filtering, examination of literature reveals that the lack of connections between the filter width and a physical scale has made LES somewhat unclosed, i.e. in a physical sense. In addition, it is known that numerical and modelling errors are always combined and it is difficult to study each of them separately making the total error magnitude difficult to control. Since both error types are characterised by the grid size, LES users very often find cases where a finer mesh no longer provides better accuracy. An attempt to address this ‘physical’ enclosure property of LES and its complication to implement/setup in FLUENT begins with the construction of a new refinement variable as a function of the Taylor scale. Then a new SAG algorithm is formed. The requirement to satisfy a condition of the selected subgrid scale (SAG) model, the Smagorinsky model, is taken into consideration to minimize the modeling error. The construction of a new refinement algorithm is also aimed to be the key to studying the interaction between the two types of error and could lead to the means of controlling their total magnitude. The validation in terms of its effectiveness, efficiency and reliability of the algorithm are made based on several criteria corresponding to suitability for practical applications. This includes the simplicity to setup/employ, computational affordability, and the accuracy level. For this, two different turbulent flow types that represent different commonly found turbulent phenomena are chosen; plane free jet and the flow over a circular cylinder. The simulations of the two cases were carried out in two dimensions. It is found that there are two key factors that strongly determine the success of the algorithm. The first factor is the Taylor scale definition, with literature only available for the turbulent plane jet study, for which good level of accuracy is expected. Unfortunately, this is not true for the flow over a circular cylinder, indicating a need for further analytical work. The second encountered difficulty results from limited access to software codes, which makes it impossible to implement the proposed scheme. As a result, the algorithm formulation needs be modified with carful judgment. Nevertheless, overall results are in reasonably good agreement with their corresponding experimental data.

Global warming has forced the power industry to adapt its infrastructure and develop technology in order to mitigate the effects and reduce the extent to which it will affect the operation of the electrical grid. With this goal in mind, the project attempts to quantify the effect of global warming on transmission line sag. First, a climate model that could predict temperature data for the time period (2001-2100) was needed. Next, a relationship between temperature and electricity demand needed to be quantified. Using this relationship and the temperature values generated by the climate model, the predicted electricity demand values were calculated for the examined time period. Since the voltage at which power is transported remains constant, the rate at which power is delivered will be given by the current flowing through the conductor. Using the estimated current values, the temperature of the conductor was calculated. This value is then used to calculate incremental sag due to the additional electrical demand. The calculated incremental sag is then plotted across time to show the increase in sag as temperatures increase. The plots also show various spikes in transmission line sag values ranging from less than an inch to just over two inches over the examined time period which does not significantly affect the operation of the grid. However, the project was performed using ideal values and is only a best case scenario. Overall, the project was successful in establishing that a relationship between global warming and transmission sag does exist, and that it needs to be addressed during future infrastructure planning.

Synthetic aperture acoustic (SAA) imaging is a technique for remotely obtaining information about the location, geometry, and mechanical properties of objects based on the way they scatter incident acoustic energy. Results are presented for an experimental investigation of the use of SAA imaging to detect non-metallic cords of different sizes laid in various configurations on the ground surface in an outdoor urban environment. Interest in this application of SAA stems from the fact that non-metallic cords are not readily detectable with synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and that the SAA imaging approach represents a relatively inexpensive alternative or supplement to SAR. The measurement system is comprised of a mobile acoustic transceiver (a speaker and microphone) that broadcasts a burst chirp with a bandwidth of 2–15 kHz. The recorded signal is used to form a two-dimensional image of the distribution of acoustic scatterers within the scene. For this study, five different diameters (2–15mm) of nylon cord laid on the ground were imaged in different configurations. These measurements were made in the presence of urban ambient noise of varying levels. The goal of this study was to identify the effect of environmental noise and other parameters on detectability. The results demonstrate that non-metallic cords can be detected acoustically if the angle to the transceiver path is sufficiently small.

The architectural intervention of 2018 in the Salt Tower of Cabanes (Castellón)Salt Tower is a complete defensive structure located in the town of Cabanes, in Castellón, at the north of the Spanish Valencian Community: “Torre de la Sal”, a link in the long coastal defense chain. The architectural intervention has basically consisted of the external consolidation of the masonry walls, especially of two of them; the protection of water infiltration and the replacement of the extemporaneous structure of the existing balcony. Internally, all the coatings have been renewed, eliminating aggressive applications and providing it with an electrical installation. The works have been adjusted to the strictest criteria from a quality point of view and have been a consequence of the findings obtained in the research phase that have determined the final result, varying in some cases those provided for in the intervention project. The results received after the intervention are presented, waiting to proceed with the intensive excavation of the immediate surroundings of the tower, located on a powerful buried urban structure, lack of excavation and submerged in the sea.

U poređenju sa komentarima o delovanju Rusije i Kine, prodornijem odnosu Turske prema Balkanu se ne poklanja dovoljno pažnje. Kako bi se ova praznina popunila, istraživački tim Beogradskog centra za bezbednosnu politiku (BCBP) sproveo je istraživanje zasnovano na analizi sekundarnog izvornog materijala ali, što je još važnije, i na razgovorima koji su sa šesnaest istraživača i pripadnika akademiske zajednice obavljeni u Istanbulu i Ankari. Iako konsultovani izvori imaju različite biografije i političke simpatije, istraživanjem je utvrđeno da su im određene teme svima zajedničke. Turska spoljna politika na Balkanu, naime, ima dva aspekta. Prvi je zasnovan na emocijama, i tu je spoljna politika države definisana njenim posebnim vezama sa tom oblašću, odnosno zajedničkom istorijom, društvenim vezama, faktorima identiteta i nasleđem Otomanskog carstva. S obzirom na društveno-kulturne veze i činjenicu da je Bosna i Hercegovina država u kojoj je to nasleđe najprisutnije, ona se u kontekstu posebnih veza sa Turskom pominje najčešće. Drugi pristup je ukorenjen u tradicionalnom spoljnopolitičkom realizmu koji proizlazi iz objektivne i proračunate procene regionalnog odnosa snaga i sopstvenih interesa. U okviru tog pristupa, Turska iz bezbednosnih i strateških razloga nastoji da deluje pragmatično i ostvaruje svoje namere na Balkanu, a da se pritom ne uplete u krize koje bi mogle da joj ometaju uticaj u regionu. Ovaj pristup Tursku vodi ka aktivnim odnosima sa Srbijom, koja je u strateškom smislu značajna zemlja u regionu, jer je Ankara duboko uverena da, ukoliko želi da bude delotvorna na Balkanu, mora da ima partnerski odnos sa Beogradom. Pri tome, mora da uspostavi ravnotežu između emocija i realizma. Mora pažljivo da neguje odnose sa zajednicama sa kojima ima kulturne i verske veze, kao što su Bošnjačke i Albanske, ali i da istovremeno pazi da od sebe ne odgurne države poput Srbije, čije joj je partnerstvo neophodno ukoliko želi da postigne uspeh na Balkanu. Turska spoljna politika u regionu prošla je kroz dve faze. U prvoj joj je politika prema Balkanu bila previše fokusirana na istoriju i faktore identiteta. Ta praksa je posebno došla do izražaja u fazi koju kritičari vole da nazivaju „neoosmanizmom“, a koja se najčešće povezuje sa Ahmetom Davutogluom, nekadašnjim ministrom inostranih poslova Turske (2009-2014) i kasnije premijerom (2014–2016). Treba naglasiti da je Redžep Tajip Ergodan i tada bio na vlasti, ali je za politiku prema Balkanu bio zadužen prvenstveno Davutoglu. Međutim, upravo zbog retorike kojom se akcenat stavljao na emocije, istoriju i kulturu, spoljna politika Ankare u regionu je tokom tog perioda doživljavala neuspehe jer su lokalni hrišćanski narodi Tursku doživljavali kao ekspanzionističku silu koja se poziva na ranije imperijalno nasleđe, i kao pristrasnog posrednika koji favorizuje muslimanske zajednice kakva je npr. bošnjačka. Realistički impulsi turske spoljne politike su na površinu izbili u drugoj fazi. Ona je započela odlaskom Ahmeta Davutoglua, kada je predsednik Redžep Tajip Erdogan preuzeo čvršću kontrolu nad spoljnom politikom zemlje, pa i prema Balkanu. Ankara od tada stavlja veći naglasak na realizam i pragmatizam, za razliku od ranijeg insistiranja na strastvenoj, istorijskoj retorici. Ovu transformaciju simbolizuju bliže veze sa Srbijom koje balkanskoj politici Ankare daju veću slobodu. Pre nego što se pojavila vest o Erdoganovoj pobedi, tokom predsedničkih i parlamentarnih izbora koji su u Turskoj održani u maju 2023. godine vodila se žestoka debata o budućem smeru spoljne politike zemlje. Dok su neki tvrdili da ona mora da ostane nepromenjena bez obzira na ishod izbora , drugi su verovali u potencijalne promene u sveukupnom odnosu zemlje sa akterima kao što su EU, SAD i Rusija . Međutim, ni pre ni nakon izbora nije bilo naznaka da će se spoljna politika Turske prema Balkanu bitno promeniti. Naprotiv, može da se očekuje da će upornost međunarodnih i domaćih faktora koji su u igri dovesti do dosledne balkanske politike Turske, te da će tamošnje spoljnopolitičke elite, kada se angažuju na Balkanu, i dalje biti prinuđene da balansiraju između emocija i realizma.

El metro de San Pablo es una empresa pública perteneciente al Estado de San Pablo. Inaugurada al comienzo de los años '70, opera 62 km de líneas y transporta 700 millones de pasajeros por año. Es, muy seguramente, el mejor proveedor de transporte urbano masivo en Brasil al extremo que en San Pablo se menciona la "calidad metro" como un estándar de alta calidad de servicio. Esta nota narra el proceso que condujo a que la nueva línea 4, Amarilla, del metro de San Pablo, sea construida y gestionada bajo criterios de Asociación Público-Privada (APP), esto es, insertando una línea concesionada al sector privado en un metro de gestión estatal, y describe la manera creativa en que los mayores riesgos del proyecto fueron distribuidos entre las partes, públicas y privadas, intervinientes.

The Labrador Sea formed during rifting between North America and Greenland beginning in the Early Cretaceous, with subsequent seafloor spreading from the Maastrichtian (chron C31) to Early Paleocene (chron C27n) that ended by chron C13 (earliest Oligocene). Early Cretaceous rifting resulted in accumulation of Alexis Formation basalt units and Bjarni Formation nonmarine and marginal marine clastic rocks. In the Late Cretaceous, extension focused further offshore as sag basin conditions formed across the shelf, with a basinwide transgression of Markland Formation shale and localized Freydis Member sandstone development. A Middle Paleocene to Early Eocene regression formed Gudrid Formation shoreline sandstone units, with correlative Cartwright Formation marine shale units. This was followed by an Early Eocene transgression of the Kenamu Formation and Middle Eocene Leif Member shoreline development. During the Late Eocene through Pleistocene, transgression took place once again at the base of the Mokami Formation, with subsequent development of the partly correlative shallow-marine sandstone units of the Saglek Formation.
