Streszczenie:
A contemporary understanding of site is integral towards the proper implementation of an architectural intervention which reconciles itself amongst the landscape. This thesis is situated at the convergence of technology and nature, investigating a constructive engagement of site in order to inform an architecture embedded into rural Appalachia. An integration of drone avionics, advanced imaging and sensing technologies, and traditional means of site-observation fosters the opportunity for a more holistic understanding of place. The corresponding architectural intervention thus manifests itself as a contemporary rendition of the fire tower, a US Forest Service outpost monitoring changing wildlife populations and behaviors within the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Dubbed The Aviary, the construct functions as a wilderness drone-port, supporting a large, integrated network of conservation-drone activity over the vast surrounding mountain-scape.
Master of Architecture
This thesis investigates the role of our built environment in relation to concurrent trends in drone technology and wildlife conservation. The thesis is broken up into two parts, the first exploring new methodologies of site-investigation, and the second exploring architecture as tool for ecological conservation and preservation. The architecutral site-exploration process is redifined using drone mapping and data visualization, in hopes of achieving a more holistic understanding of our rural and wilderness landscapes, with the goal of further utilizing this understanding to inform an architecture that resides harmoneously within it's "place." The eventual designed construct can be viewed as a modern reinterpretation of the American fire-tower, a declining typology tradtionally used to safeguard our natural and wilderness resources and landscapes. This new construct takes a dynamically diffent approach, and functions as a wilderness drone-port that facilitates a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles to monitor the changes of behaviors and populations in Virginia's wildlife, advancing our methodologies of local conservation and ecological studies.

Streszczenie:
This thesis examines the epistemological and metaphysical aspects of consciousness or sentience, and how they relate to standards of scientific practice. Historically, orthodox science has denied that there are any real problems of sentience because there is no scientific evidence to support claims regarding its nature and existence. In recent years, however, new approaches to sentience have entered into scientific debate that can be classified by metaphysical frameworks that vary in their conceptions of scientific evidence. In this thesis, four such frameworks are considered and compared: Ordinary Materialism, Property Dualism, Type-F Monism and Phenomenal Representationalism. Many sentience theorists adopt an Ordinary Materialist framework that conceives of scientific observation as the interaction of our physical sensory apparatus with the surrounding physical world. Sentience-friendly theories in this framework fail to present supporting evidence that is acceptable by ordinary scientific standards. There are also contradictions in their claims that we know of conscious events via naturalised introspection, and their claims that these events create no publicly observable physical effects. Theories proposed within Property Dualist and Type-F Monist frameworks suffer from similar problems to Ordinary Materialist theories, especially contradictions between claims of knowledge by direct acquaintance and how this knowledge is stored and processed by publicly observable physical systems. Phenomenal Representationalism is advocated as the most consistent and complete way for science to deal with questions of sentience. In this framework, questions of sentience are part of wider epistemological concerns (regarding publicity, intersubjectivity, realism and scientific observation) that provide presumptions for scientific practice, rather than subjects for scientific investigation.

Van, Bogaert Louis-Jacques. "Abortion, sentience and moral standing : a neurophilosophical appraisal". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/52619.

Streszczenie:
Thesis (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Moral theories on abortion are often regarded as mutually exclusive. On the one hand, pro-life advocates maintain that abortion is always morally wrong, for life is sacred from its very beginning. On the other hand, the extreme liberal view advocated by the absolute pro-ehoieers claims that the unborn is not a person and has no moral standing. On this view there is no conflict of rights; women have the right to dispose of their body as they wish. Therefore, killing a non-person is always permissible. In between the two extreme views, some moral philosophers argue that a 'pre-sentient' embryo or fetus cannot be harmed because it lacks the ability to feel pain or pleasure, for it is 'sentience' that endows a living entity (human and non-human) with moral considerability. Therefore, abortion of a pre-sentient embryo or fetus is permissible. Neurophilosophy rests a philosophical conclusion on neurological premises. In other words, to be tenable sentientism - the claim that sentience endows an entity with moral standing - needs robust neurobiological evidence. The question is, then: What is the basic neuroanatomical and neurophysiological apparatus required to be sentient? The answer to that question requires a fair understanding of the evolution, anatomy and function of the brain. The exploration thereof shows quite convincingly that the advocates of sentientism do not provide convincing arguments to root their theory in neurobiological facts. Their claims rest rather on emotions and on behaviours that look like a reaction to pain. The other shortcoming of sentientism is that it fails to distinguish pain from suffering, and that as a utilitarian moral theory it considers only the alleged pain of the aborted sentient fetus and disregards the pregnant woman's pain and suffering. And, finally, sentientism leaves out of our moral consideration living and non-living entities that deserve moral respect. The main thrust of the dissertation is that the argument of sentience as its advocates present it has no neurophilosophical grounds. Therefore, the argument from sentience is not a convincing argument in favour or against abortion.

This thesis considers, from a folklorist’s perspective, the people in Western society who believe that everyday objects have feelings. It establishes these people as a cohesive group for study, referred to as “people to experience the belief in object sentience,” then analyzes their personal accounts of the experience to find both commonalities and differences. From this analysis and discussion of folkloristic perspectives on belief, the main argument is established: people in this group have generally been marginalized and could benefit from a more careful consideration of their beliefs.

Humans have long been drawn to the study of nonhuman animal cognitive and emotional intelligence, but have long come up short. Cognitive scientists look for signs of a sense of self, the ability to solve problems, and the capacity for communication in a vast array of nonhuman species, from cephalopods to primates. In this particular search, science has been increasingly successful as researchers report that New Caledonian crows can use tools to solve rather complex problems; that dolphins and songbirds can identify themselves in mirrors; and that dogs can "turn off' survival drives in order to engage in play behavior. In fact, nonhuman animal intelligence research is exploding rather wildly onto the scene. Other scientists aren't as fortunate. They have a much more difficult time identifying with any certainty that nonhuman animals experience emotion, but the answers are approaching illumination. Mice show signs of empathy. Rats laugh when they play...and when intrepid researchers tickle them. Anxious dogs respond identically to humans when fed meat-flavored Prozac. No matter what these behaviors look like, however, emotional experience is subjective and thus still just beyond of scientific reach. As long as subjective experience of nonhuman animals is brushed off by science, the search for evidence of cognitive and emotional intelligence in these creatures is at a hard-headed stand-still. Wrought with fears of anthropomorphism and crushed reputations, these research areas are perpetually at risk for withering away into scientific obscurity. A transformation of thought, a readjustment of methods is deeply needed. A revolution is likely close around the corner, and with it will come a move away from anthropocentric science, as well as some difficult ethical and moral questions.

My project reflects upon our body's impermanence and our efforts to balance the enormity of the concept of mortality with living every day. It investigates the condition of being that one cannot permit oneself to know too often, that is, the condition of, inhabiting a body through which one engages meaningfully with the world as a conscious being, but aware that this body will die. Within this framework, I investigate concepts of consciousness, sentience, and impermanence. These are concepts that are not clearly delineated in experience. There is a need to grasp them by means of other concepts that are understood in clearer terms. Using the quotidian experiences of food preparation, eating and the domestic as metaphorical tools, I delve into these themes. As I worked with these ideas the wider possibilities, both material and conceptual became evident. I expanded the initial medium of food to encompass personal objects and daily bodily processes in my attempt to probe complicated feelings about the impermanence of my own body. The project matured into a closer examination of what could be read as signs in every day life, of my body's vulnerability to death. The specific areas of focus are: Skin, Reanimation of the inanimate, Mouth, Concepts of the internal, Organs, Offal, Transmogrification, Organic destiny. Beginning with the skin that we are encased in, I used my body as an armature to produce a facsimile of my own hollowed-out empty skin. In Reanimation of the inanimate, I explore the continuum from preserved food to fermented food investigating the development from food as organic material whose life had passed to food as organic material in which change is an indicator of ongoing life. In the section titled Mouth, I consider the concept of exploring the world with one's mouth and the notion of anti-food. Introduced in Concepts of the internal are three investigations of the internal human body: anatomical illustrations from the sixteenth century, a cinematic portrayal from 1966 that has included in its subtext a spiritual journey, and a current project in which the internal human body is seen as purely scientific data. In Organs I investigate the idea of ingesting 'properties of character' that can be culturally associated with internal organs and the possibility that such characteristics could permeate the person ingesting them. In the section titled Offal, I propose that the polarity of life and death inherent in food is most evident when eating a meal of offal. In Transmogrificaation, I consider the conundrum of my internal organs, that is, they are mine in fact they are 'me' and at the same time they are foreign to me. In this section, I also investigate the concept of my body as a conduit with the ability to transport and transform matter. Finally, in Organic destiny I posit the notion that as bodies we are an ongoing process, an accumulation of matter built up over time and that we are small participants in a much bigger phenomenon.

The principle objective of this thesis is to expand the term “technological sublime” to include technologies of artificial intelligence. In defining new realms of the technological sublime, we must not only consider the ecological integration of technology within natural surroundings, but also appreciate modern technological objects that instigate sublime experiences. This work examines science fictional portrayals of interactions with sentient artificial intelligence in I, Robot, 2001: A Space Odyssey and other major works of science fiction. In each of these works, characters who encounter technologies possessing artificial intelligence share sublime experiences. This thesis considers various levels of embodiment associated with the objects of artificial intelligence and discusses the sublime qualities of both cybernetic and android beings. Finally, this work examines how our perceptions of environment are altered by the introduction of virtual reality and virtual landscapes, which consequently affects our mindscapes and contribute to the technological sublime.

Bem-estar animal. Eletronarcose. Inconsciência. Percepção. Sofrimento. Termonarcose.
Abstract: In Brazil, in 2011 it was produced 544,490 tons of fish from aquaculture. The concern with the level of welfare of animals for food production is increasing in the Western world. However, traditional methods of killing fish cause a high degree of suffering and studies of humane slaughter methods in native species are still scarce. Furthermore, the most regulations slaughter of farm animals include do not include fish. Thus, this work aimed to study parameters for electrical stunning in two species and to study the perception on fish sentience, welfare and slaughter by citizens from Bogotá, Colombia, and Curitiba, Brazil. This study is divided into five chapters: (1) Presentation; (2) Perception on fish sentience, welfare and humane slaughter by Latin American citizens; (3) Electrical stunning in pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus); (4) Electrical stunning in South American catfish (Rhamdia quelen) and (5) Final considerations. The chapter on the perception of citizens showed that respondents consider the fish as sentient beings. The classification of sentience perception among taxonomic groups seems in accordance with the phylogenetic proximity to humans, suggesting greater sensitivity towards mammals. Citizens perceived a high degree of suffering in recreational angling, fair live fish and fish used in laboratories. In addition, respondents agreed with the inclusion of fish in humane slaughter regulations. The chapters on electrical stunning allowed identified parameters of electrical stunning to unconsciousness times greater than 1 min and no significant changes in muscle pH and rigor mortis of carcasses. Further, parameters used were safe in terms of avoiding fractures, bleeding or petechial in the carcasses. The results point to the need for research development to improve the current fish slaughtering practices in Brazil, as well as the importance of including fish in the regulation of humane slaughter. Further studies are needed to provide tools applicable in the industry in order to establish humane slaughter practices in fish reduce the suffering of a large number of individuals.
Fish quality is subject to many factors, including the stunning methods. In this research we used the electric shock at different intensities as stunning method cobia (Rachycentron canadum), and evaluated its effects on the quality of chilled and frozen fish fillets. The experiment was conducted in two trials, the first desensitizing the fish with electroshock intensities 100; 150 and 200 volts, and stored refrigerated for 21 days. In the second assay was applied using the electrical current intensities 50; 100; 150 Volts, then filleting and storage under freezing. The fish used in both assays were obtained from a commercial fish farm located on the northern coast of São Paulo about 50 km by sea from the town of Ubatuba, Brazil. Fish quality traits were physical, chemical and sensory characteristics as volatile nitrogenous bases, dielectric measurements, Rigor Mortir index, pH, protein denaturation, fatty acid profile and their relationships, texture, color, drip loss, cooking loss, water holding capacity (WHC), sensory evaluation of freshness, ATP and degradation products and lipid oxidation. The experimental design was a 6X3 factorial six times analysis and three electric shock intensities in the first test; the second test was used factorial 4X3 (fourstroke analyzes and three shock voltages). There were significant differences (p <0.05) in both trials for most variables, for both treatments, weather, but also to the influence of storage time within each treatment. However, for the two trials the number of significant variables between treatments was lower than the number of variables that were significant to the storage times, with the interaction time*treatment they received substantial significance within results found. In these two trials conducted using the cooling and freezing Bijupirá, the best results for the treatment intensity at 150 volts for most variables where there were significant differences (p <0.05) were observed between treatments. It was also concluded that cobia can be kept within seven days of slaughter in cold storage and up to 180 days when stored at freezing.

The present paper proposes an investigation into the ethical and legal treatment of animals, evincing the recognition of sentience as a criterion in the moral consideration of animals. It discusses initially the differences and similarities between humans and other animals, anthropocentrism as a factor that favors the nonconsideration of non-human animals as beings having intrinsic values, and the legacy of Immanuel Kant as opposed to biocentrism, that includes life, in general, in the core of the universe; also, the recent debates regarding the possibility of recognizing animals fundamental rights and the development of a multidimensional and comprehensive dignity, the latter being based on the studies of Ingo Sarlet. Next, the paper presents an overview of the constitutions of Germany, Switzerland and Ecuador, also highlighting some features of English law, so as study the legal treatment given to animals in these countries. It also analyses the constitutional and infra-constitutional position of the non-human animal in the Brazilian legal system. Finally, it touches on the use of animals in scientific experiments, teaching activities, cultural events, shows and religious rituals, from the viewpoint of animals wellbeing and rights, suggesting a reflection on the need to bring animals within the sphere of moral consideration, opposing speciesism. The ideas presented are based on Peter Singer s theory of the equal consideration of interests and Tom Regan s theory of animals rights

This thesis explores how people struggle to make livable lives in the conditions of existence of seeking asylum in the UK. The study is based on ethnographic research, conversations and participant observation, with people seeking asylum in Manchester. Grounding the research in their narratives is a contribution to decolonizing knowledge and doing justice to the sentience of people who are marginalized and pathologized. The narratives are brought into dialogue with feminist and decolonial philosophy and political theory, and with empirical studies of 'refugeedom' from a number of disciplines, to produce a new field of connection from which to map the terrain involved in theorizing livability. While the whole thesis seeks to respond to the narratives, there is a detailed focus on three dimensions which participants emphasize as crucial to livability: settlement in Manchester; the prohibition of employment; the asylum application procedures. These are moments in which livability is claimed as both ethics and practice. From the perspective of the narratives and the ethics which permeate them, livability opens up into questions of recognition, social justice and care. People claim commonality: recognition as human, equality and inclusion in social goods, and care in public settings. These are the practical and ethical supports of livability. The narratives point also towards critiques of 'refugeedom', the policies and practices that form the discursive and material conditions within which people seeking asylum attempt to make livable lives.

Now, at the dawn of the new millennium, the scientific project of mapping human DNA seemingly complete, the plight of the genetically-engineered human has become an intense focus of cultural critique. This doctoral project can be differentiated by its focus on aesthetic inquiry into the implications for expressions and representations of corporeality in relation to contemporary biomedical engineering. It has incorporated stem cell research that entails the manipulation and redirection of adult stem cell fates. The project takes the form of practical and theoretical investigations into cellular responses, and is framed within the matrices of both an innovative collaborative art/science research model and the evolving process of practice-led arts research. The exploratory research is discursively located within the system/environment paradigm. This allows for boundaries between the philosophic and scientific disciplines of: 1. epistemology, 2. ethics and aesthetics and 3. biology and technology to become nodes in a relational network associated with: 1. living and non-living, 2. sentience and consciousness and 3. conceptions of humanness. The cycle of practice-led research culminates in a body of work that began with a project entitled apoptosis, and developed into a three part quasi-scientific vital force series of installations. Each of these installations references nineteenth century scientific experimental processes employed in a search for the essential components of the human being itself. The series of interactive installations is discussed and the processual, pioneering research model, whereby the artist becomes the 'human guinea pig' is theoretically and visually articulated. In addition, time-lapse videomicrograph image data, collected through laboratory experiments is interpreted and recontextualised by the artist-researcher for representation in the vital force series of immersive installations. In these installations the implications of the issues raised by biomedical engineering processes are expressed as a very physical, tactile encounter. The aim is that these encounters engender a multi-sensory experience for the individual viewer, who, when immersed in the aesthetic, corporeal, interactive installations as a participant who completes the work through their engagement. Thus, the significance of the study lies in its re-privileging of the aesthetic experience of corporeality in the discourses surrounding genetic manipulation. This exegesis, like the doctoral project itself, is cyclical; following the inseparable processes of theory and practice through which the implications of the core research issues for a hybrid art/science practice are explored. It echoes the qualitative, post-positivist research methodology used throughout the project, which aimed to overcome the third person perspective through such strategies as interactivity and hybridity.

Streszczenie:
Metalinguistic sentience refers to the conscious or unconscious apprehension of, sensitivity to, and attention to language as something with form and function that can be manipulated. This includes, but is not restricted to, conscious or unconscious apprehension of, sensitivity to, and attention to the following aspects of language and literacy: pragmatics, syntactics, semantics, phonology, orthography, morphology, figurative, metalanguage, print "carries" meaning, print conventions, book conventions, text conventions, referent/label arbitrariness, purposes of literacy, and abilities. These aspects of language and literacy are part of a morphological model developed by the author for classifying the evidence provided by children of their metalinguistic sentience. The two other faces of the model, displayed as a cube, depict (1) Literacy Acguisition and Literacy Learning and (2) four Prompt States: Self-, Child-, Adult-, Text. This ethnographic study of nine verbally gifted kindergarten and first grade children was conducted with a three-fold purpose: to explore whether young verbally gifted children's metalinguistic sentience coincided with their cognitive ability, to explore whether young verbally gifted children's metalinguistic sentience influenced their literacy acquisition and literacy learning, and to explore whether young verbally gifted children's literacy acquisition and literacy learning enhanced their metalinguistic sentience. The study took place during a full school year, while the author was a participant observer in the informants' classrooms. The evidence from the research indicated that the nine verbally gifted children who served as the informants for the study had a lower threshold for metalinguistic sentience than did their agemates. This lower threshold allowed them to acquire and learn literacy more easily and more efficiently.

In the last ten years some writs of habeas corpus have been filed, in Brazil and in other countries, on behalf of great primates. It is a matter of constitutional order and one more instrument utilized for activists for the recognition of the Animal s Rights. This slope, even if generates many controversies, is coming neatly bigger in the past few years, as we can verify throughout the doctrinal and jurisprudential production. The sentience always have been the central element inside the debates evolving the rela-tionship between humans and other animals. Scientific progress that have finding the impressive genetic closeness among us and the great primates, boosted the requests of habeas corpus on behalf of the latter. The grant of the order and, consequently, the admission of rights to the animals generates countless questionings. If the humankind proceeds in the path of the emancipatory trajectory and after receiving all human be-ings in their moral community, could receive , what seems to be the last frontier, the animals, many questionings should be subject of analysis, that already derives from the own grant of the writ to the anthropoids. So, what animals, which rights, what cri-teria to concede them, what judicial instruments must be used to protect them, what is the consequence for humans of the acknowledgment of the Animals Rights and what criteria should be utilized in a conflict of interests between human animals and nonhu-man animals, are some of the largely complex questionings that will be subject of re-flection in the present work

This thesis examines nonhuman phenomenological experiences, communication, and sensory perception in Barbara Gowdy’s The White Bone. Drawing on literary and pedagogical theories by Roman Bartosch, Monika Fludernik, Marco Caracciolo, David Herman, and Judith Langer, the thesis argues that Gowdy’s novel employs narrative strategies and devices that involve nonhuman experientiality evoked from sensorial configurations, narration, and textual cognitive and embodied experiences. These represented experiences disrupt human primacy by establishing a disorientation that challenges the anthropocentric bias in the novel and decenters the human reader. Moreover, the thesis offers suggestions for using the novel in conjunction with envisionment building to discuss animal alterity and anthropocentrism in the Swedish EFL classroom.

Streszczenie:
Spatial datasets are an important source of context for computer applications in Sentient Computing. However, heterogeneous sensor networks present location and orientation telemetry in differing formats, with incompatible interpretation semantics, and subject to contrasting measurement and quantisation errors. Applications consume data in another set of frames of reference and are generally confined to operating in rooms and office spaces that are sensed by a single, homogeneous suite of sensors under the same ownership and administrative control. This thesis presents Scalable, Distributed Spatial Indexing (SDSI), a unifying framework designed to capture the semantics of sensor technologies and autonomously transform, re-write, and otherwise massage data so as to interface to application-level software and decouple applications and sensor hardwares to support seamless mobility. Translation Functions perform the mathematical operations necessary to convert raw sensor data to other formats. The SDSI framework ensures the preservation of the mathematical and scientific rigour associated with the interpretation of each telemetry data stream. Uncertainties and errors are also converted by Translation Functions and allow client applications to determine the accuracy and precision suitability of any sensor data for individual purposes. SDSI builds on long-standing database theory to provide security and privacy controls, allowing users to restrict access to sensitive data streams without requiring multiple, isolated data handling systems. Caching techniques are used to maintain processing throughput and network distribution provides scalable, inter-site communication through the global Internet. The evaluation includes a substantial investigation of Driveable Computing—the scope for Sentient Computing in private motor vehicles—in which spatial frames of reference are required to interpret cartographic data, interact with human occupants using natural language, interface with positioning hardware, and so forth. The conclusion, that the proposed framework is suitable and applicable to Sentient Computing, is extremely positive and poses several avenues and opportunities for continued research in the field.

Animals, which for a long time were legally classified as property, are nowadays beginning to be recategorised. Even if French law denies them the status of non-human persons, they are nonetheless recognized as being sentient. This legal oddity, in which animals are at one and the same time both living beings and property, has been the subject of numerous studies, and certain researchers have succeeded in resolving these paradoxes. However, if the status of animals has been frequently examined from a legal angle, little specific or overall research has been undertaken in the domain of public law. And yet, it appears that the study of animals in public law raises questions and answers that are equally interesting. That is why the present thesis, « Animals in public law », follows two main, complementary choices: that of being an inventory, and that of theorizing. Charting, first of all, the reality of the situation seems essential in order to facilitate doctrinal or jurisprudential interpretation. Secondly, this study has made possible the theorizing of certain judicial questions. Finally, public law offers new perspectives for the creating of a true system of laws concerning animals. This work, whose main outcome is to contribute new elements to dereification and to avoid certain inconsistences, would foreground animal interests – notably by placing animals in a new societal order to be protected, or by setting forth a new approach to the personification of animals. Moreover, the study of comparative public law offers us different perspectives in the defence of animal rights – notably through the constitution

Pełny tekst źródła
Streszczenie:
This thesis is concerned with the philosophical problems of personal identity and personal survival. In the first case, we are concerned to establish what our identity as persons consists in at any instant. In the second case we are concerned to establish what our survival as the self-same (i.e.:numerically identical) person consists in. That is, we wish to know what it means to say that one is the same person now which one was ten years ago or will be ten years from now. I first introduce the distinction between the epistemological question of how we can know these things and the metaphysical question of what these notions actually consist in and claim that much confusion has resulted from the conflation of these two. Further, I explicitly claim that this thesis is intended as a solution to the latter only. I then move on to an historical survey of the major theories of personal identity that have been held since the time of Descartes. After demonstrating how these theories are inadequate, I introduce and explicate the theory defended here which, it is claimed, is a novel one. This novelty consists in the following two distinctions: Firstly, that between persons and sentient beings and, secondly, that between qualitative and non-qualitative psychological relations. It is claimed that sentient beings incorporate the latter in a way which makes them immune to the sorts of contextual problems that typically affect theories of personal identity. Having already established that we are all sentient beings as well as persons, I then claim that the former concept is the fundamental notion of any theory of personal identity and survival. I subsequently consider reductionism, which currently prevails in the field, and conclude that such a position inevitably leads to many counterintuitive results. I then compare reductionism with the theory defended here and conclude that the latter is preferable, since it allows us to explain personal identity without abandoning our intuitions regarding what is involved in these matters.

Streszczenie:
This practice-led PhD offers two contributions to the emerging discipline of sensory ethnography: a new theoretical framework for understanding the relationships between sensory experience, the sentient body and cultural phenomena and a series of new sensory research methods. It comprises the thesis presented here, a number of practical projects and a ‘dossier’ of associated outputs, including conference papers, workshops and symposiums, public engagement activities and successful funding applications. For the purposes of assessment and dissemination, all of these components have been collated into a single online presence: www.multisensoryethnography.com. The primary piece of practice associated with this PhD is a multisensory and participatory virtual archive of Temple Works, a Grade I listed building in South Leeds (Jackson, 2016a). This project, hereafter Experience Temple Works, is a proof of concept implementation of all of the methodological innovations advocated in this thesis and also embodies the theoretical contributions detailed in the writing. Experience Temple Works was created as part of a 30-month ethnography with the community of artists and makers resident within the building, hereafter Temple.Works.Leeds. The theoretical arguments presented in this thesis and the associated practice were developed in parallel and it is therefore recommended that they are ‘read’ in concert, allowing the relationships between them to be revealed. In order to facilitate this, the footnotes in this thesis regularly include links to pertinent ‘locations’ within the practice. The structure of this document intentionally blurs the conventional distinctions between the review of literature, methods and findings. These aspects of the research are inextricably linked and cannot be effectively be addressed in isolation. The thesis offers an analysis of the potentialities and problems which sensory ethnography introduces, arguing that it offers new and innovative ways of understanding the lives of others but will only be established as an enduring and meaningful development within anthropology if a number of significant challenges can be overcome. Synthesising theoretical perspectives from numerous different disciplines, the thesis argues that multisensory research methods are central to understanding the complex and interdependent relationships between the senses and culture, bringing into question ethnographic studies which attempt to separate out individual sensory modalities from the multisensory matrix of perception. A new theoretical framework for sensory ethnography is introduced which attempts to unify key concepts from a range of cognate disciplines and is based upon a helical model of evolving and reciprocal correlations between sensory experience, the sentient body and cultural phenomena. Methodological contributions are made through the evaluation of a series of new technological modes of representation (developed by the author) which not only have the potential to significantly impact upon the production, dissemination and reception of ethnographic studies, but which might also become a platform through which ethnographic knowledge is co-created with the research participants. Finally, the practical projects which implement and embody all of the methodological and theoretical contributions in this thesis are situated, with specific reference to the impact they have attained. The salient argument of this thesis is that sensory ethnography is an exciting but profoundly challenging new discipline. It has the potential to significantly impact upon any research project which implements fieldwork methods in the study of cultural phenomena but its future is dependent upon the rethinking of long-established practices related to the production and dissemination of ethnographic knowledge.

Streszczenie:
The slave trade and colonial regimes disrupted the collectivity and history of the Caribbean populations. The absence of firsthand victim accounts in institutionalized historical records, e.g., chronicles of national history, and the current displacement of diasporic communities negate the effectiveness of ‘lieux de mémoire’, relegating collective memory to an abstraction of cultural remnants and personal narratives. However, several contemporary Caribbean works present a female protagonist with an embodied connection to history and culture, despite a lack of experiential knowledge and/or removal from the communal context. The corpus of this study includes Marie Célie-Agnant’s Le livre d’Emma (2001), Simone and André Schwarz-Bart’s Un plat de porc aux bananes vertes (1967), and Gisèle Pineau’s L’Exil selon Julia (1996). I approach this phenomenon by investigating the meanings associated with physical sensations that trigger reminiscence and their connections to collective memory. I link trans-generational memory to the acculturation of Caribbean women’s bodies as sites of history and position sensory memory as a form of ‘living’ memory that transcends geographical displacement and temporal distance. The continuity of sensory memory establishes embodied solidarity between ancestors and the ‘postmemory’ generation who are faced with cultural alienation.

Streszczenie:
Ubiquitous computing systems aim to assist us as we go about our daily lives, whilst at the same time fading into the background so that we do not notice their presence. To do this they need to be able to sense their surroundings and infer context about the state of the world. Location has proven to be an important source of contextual information for such systems. If a device can determine its own location then it can infer its surroundings and adapt accordingly. Of particular interest for many ubiquitous computing systems is the ability to track people in indoor environments. This interest has led to the development of many indoor location systems based on a range of technologies including infra-red light, ultrasound and radio. Unfortunately existing systems that achieve the kind of sub-metre accuracies desired by many location-aware applications require large amounts of infrastructure to be installed into the environment. This thesis investigates an alternative approach to indoor pedestrian tracking that uses on-body inertial sensors rather than relying on fixed infrastructure. It is demonstrated that general purpose inertial navigation algorithms are unsuitable for pedestrian tracking due to the rapid accumulation of errors in the tracked position. In practice it is necessary to frequently correct such algorithms using additional measurements or constraints. An extended Kalman filteris developed for this purpose and is applied to track pedestrians using foot-mounted inertial sensors. By detecting when the foot is stationary and applying zero velocity corrections a pedestrian's relative movements can be tracked far more accurately than is possible using uncorrected inertial navigation. Having developed an effective means of calculating a pedestrian's relative movements, a localisation filter is developed that combines relative movement measurements with environmental constraints derived from a map of the environment. By enforcing constraints such as impassable walls and floors the filter is able to narrow down the absolute position of a pedestrian as they move through an indoor environment. Once the user's position has been uniquely determined the same filter is demonstrated to track the user's absolute position to sub-metre accuracy. The localisation filter in its simplest form is computationally expensive. Furthermore symmetry exhibited by the environment may delay or prevent the filter from determining the user's position. The final part of this thesis describes the concept of assisted localisation, in which additional measurements are used to solve both of these problems. The use of sparsely deployed WiFi access points is discussed in detail. The thesis concludes that inertial sensors can be used to track pedestrians in indoor environments. Such an approach is suited to cases in which it is impossible or impractical to install large amounts of fixed infrastructure into the environment in advance.

Streszczenie:
This thesis is a sociological exploration of how people involved in commercial and hobby livestock production, in Northeast Scotland, make sense of their relations with livestock, from birth to slaughter. I carried out an ethnographic study that combines fieldwork and unstructured interviewing to elicit how mart workers, auctioneers, vets, farmers, stockmen, hobby farmers and slaughter workers regard and interact with livestock. Although livestock are the raw materials of production, I show that the commodity status of livestock is variable and that people's relationships with livestock are complex, dynamic and ambiguous. One of the main reasons for ambiguity is that livestock are sentient and social begins: they have the capacity to engage in social relations with each other and with those who work closest with them. In effect, livestock are commodified sentient beings but to draw attention to people's difficulty in classifying and relating to them, I suggest they are sentient commodities. I argue that people's attitude, feeling and behaviour, towards livestock is systematically related to the place they, and their animals, occupy in the commercial and non-commercial production process. For instance, breeding animals are more likely to be regarded as individuals whilst slaughter animals are anonymously processed as part of a de-individualised batch. Similarly, people attend to express varying degrees of emotional attachment to livestock at the breeding end of the process and varying degrees of emotional detachment towards livestock destined for slaughter. Any animals, however, that requires additional handling or deviates from the routine is included to stand out from the herd, will acquire more meaning for the worker, and will become more than 'just an animal'. People who work with livestock are therefore faced with the challenge of negotiating the contradictory demands of being empathetic carers and economic producers of livestock.

Streszczenie:
The zombie narrative has seen an increasing trend towards the emergence of a zombie sentience. The intention of this thesis is to examine the cultural framework that has informed the contemporary figure of the zombie, with specific attention directed towards the role of the thinking, conscious or sentient zombie. This examination will include an exploration of the zombie’s folkloric origin, prior to the naming of the figure in 1819, as well as the Haitian appropriation and reproduction of the figure as a representation of Haitian identity. The destructive nature of the zombie, this thesis argues, sees itself intrinsically linked to the notion of apocalypse; however, through a consideration of Frank Kermode’s A Sense of an Ending, the second chapter of this thesis will propose that the zombie need not represent an apocalypse that brings devastation upon humanity, but rather one that functions to alter perceptions of ‘humanity’ itself. The third chapter of this thesis explores the use of the term “braaaaiiinnss” as the epitomised zombie voice in the figure’s development as an effective threat within zombie-themed videogames. The use of an epitomised zombie voice, I argue, results in the potential for the embodiment of a zombie subject. Chapter Four explores the development of this embodied zombie subject through the introduction of the Zombie Memoire narrative and examines the figure as a representation of Agamben’s Homo Sacer or ‘bare life’: though often configured as a non-sacrificial object that can be annihilated without sacrifice and consequence, the zombie, I argue, is also paradoxically inscribed in a different, Girardian economy of death that renders it as the scapegoat to the construction of a sense of the ‘human’. The final chapter of this thesis argues that both the traditional zombie and the sentient zombie function within the realm of a posthuman potentiality, one that, to varying degrees of success, attempts to progress past the restrictive binaries constructed within the overruling discourse of humanism. In conclusion, this thesis argues that while the zombie, both traditional and sentient, attempts to propose a necessary move towards a posthuman universalism, this move can only be considered if the ‘us’ of humanism embraces the potential of its own alterity.

This work is to show whether the method “talitativo-transcendental” zubiriano phenomenological is it? To answer this we proceeded in two steps, first, we show that zubiriano method is “talitativo-transcendental”, and this because Zubiri does not declare that it will follow a “talitativo-transcendental” method, but this method is traversed, in a way, in your thought comprising all intellectual third stage, which called metaphysics. This method is internal in its analytical and demonstrative proceed, but we must raise that by declaring in << a way >> what we mean is that in the development of his thought is what “talitativo” and “transcendental” as pieces of his reflective fabric, is say, they are parties to explain their worldly metaphysics. In a second moment are the pieces that the analysis and description of the essence of the real and the fact the intellectual act is based. Secondly, by showing that this method is “talitativo-transcendental”, we turn to answer whether or not it is a phenomenology. Regarding the first step, what has been shown of this method is that part of the physical and real thing and without leaving through the structural description is showing from the “talitativa” structure to the “transcendental” structure that is the reality of the thing. This way by which develops this description implies a vision or structural scheme by which considers the physical and real thing is structure and time to go showing their essence are showing the structures of their content or “talidad” and reality or “transcendentalidad” . This go describing reality involves a philosophical project that Zubiri is metaphysical, because it goes to the demonstration of the “transcendental” from and physical and real thing. This march is descriptively possible because within this metaphysical the “talidad” project is part of the same reality as without that we cannot install on the “transcendental”. This is accomplished by the transcendental function, although there is a “talitativa” function, the transcendental function is starting from the “talidad” of reality I installed in the transcendental this by a consideration that in this philosophy is called function as “tal” to “trans”. Now this metaphysical involves precise structural schematic view, the “talidad” and scientific explanations that show why it is this or that reality, and “transcendentalidad” as the reality is that as a reality. The descriptive deployment which involves “intramundana” metaphysics and will bow the physical to the transcendental is developed by what we consider the methodic resources: Four phenomenologies used to carry out this deployment. Two are Husserl, one installation and another as descriptive -this time with clear influence of Investigations logics which together with the other time as a metaphysical exercise is shown as a description of reality. But in doing this description uses a “orteguiana” phenomenology, not as simple description, but it is distinguishing structure after structure of a circular to reach the radically. The other is using phenomenology Heidegger as a way of deconstructing the history of philosophy for his metaphysical proposal, not ontological fundamental. In addition to these phenomenologies we have shown other methodic resources and the use of the word, scientific and linguistic influence in shaping his thinking, and the use of the history of philosophy. To show whether this method is phenomenological proceeded contrasting the “talitativo- transcendental” method and the husserlian method. With this we find that if we look at a deeper level zubirian method gives us the husserlian steps as syncretic possibilities zubirian method. Thus we show that two epojes are given in the “talitativo-transcendental” method: installation, thanks to husserlian method and other epojé of permanence that is the zubirian. Two reductions, one, in reality and another in the sentient intelligence. And the dynamic structural variation, here and dialogue between philosophy and science, we believe from the first zubirianos writings, and the description concentric circular, the result of “ortegiano” influence is justified. This variation is the point in which both the description, the transcendental function as a metaphysical exercise, “talitativo-transcendental”, are part of this structural variation, and thus their justification and rationale shown. But reaches also show that Zubiri point enriching brings to a phenomenology where structural variation is a metaphysical exercise, that is, this method carries within it a metaphysical exercise which shows how dynamic structural variation. With this contrast between methods, we are presented zubirian method not only as we had shown in a first step, but is given as a way of doing phenomenology, husserlian and “heideggeriano” other than. The “talitativo-transcendental” method overflows and is presented as a way of doing phenomenology. This overflow is because we can now justify zubirianas claims, and this because we have a prior phenomenology is husserlian, and installing the philosopher “easonense” real and physical, this is the first part of his statement, of << to things >>, the following method development leads to zubirian, we not only presents “talitativo-transcendental”, but overflows to a phenomenology of the husserlian steps and incorporated syncretic possibilities to go ―here the second part of the statement― to << from things>>. This road is a << different>> way of looking husserlian phenomenological steps and in which Zubiri puts a metaphysical project. That is, zubirian method is phenomenological, and underlying a project metaphysical and within this method, structural variation, there is a metaphysical exercise. This is what the new way of doing phenomenology in zubirian method.

Streszczenie:
Nausea and vomiting are common but serious side effects associated with many therapeutic drugs. Whilst the physiological mechanisms behind the generation of the vomiting response are well characterised, the range of emetic stimuli that can generate the response are poorly understood. The potential of using Dictyostelium discoideum, a eukaryotic amoeba, as a model for predicting emetic liability was examined in this thesis. The effects of a range of known emetic and aversive compounds on Dictyostelium cell behaviour was investigated, resulting in the identification of a small number that strongly inhibited cell migration in a concentration-dependent and reversible manner. These active compounds included a range of bitter compounds and the pungent taslant, capsaicin. A Dictyostelium mutagenesis screen was then used to identify genes controlling sensitivity to bitter tastants. This screen identified a mutant containing a disrupted grlJ gene as showing partial resistance to phenylthiourea in growth and behavioural changes in movement. GrlJ is a Gprotein coupled receptor that regulates a phenylthiourea-dependent effect by inhibition of a phosphatidylinositol (PIP3) signalling pathway. A search for proteins sharing homology to GrlJ identified an uncharacterised GABAB-like receptor, QaNHA5, involved in the detection of phenylthiourea in Dictyostelium. This thesis has therefore identified Dictyostelium as a potentially useful model for the identification of bitter and pungent tastants. In addition, this thesis has identified the Dictyostelium protein, GrIJ, as well as an uncharacterised human protein, Q8NHA5, involved in the detection of the bitter tastant, phenylthiourea.

The ground as a support for urban life remains a largely understudied topic in architectural and urban research. In a world where towns compete to offer a better quality of public spaces, pedestrian use is considered as an essential aspect. Felt underfoot and seen on the perceptual horizon without being consciously considered, very little in-depth research has revealed its sentient dimensions. After some brief historical considerations on the importance of urban ground, the study focuses on how the ground is integrated into the lived experience of our environment, beginning with how we learn to walk. The ground is a fundamental dimension and plays an essential role in keeping balance and creating a sense of proprioception. It participates as a basis for bodily experience by providing a surface of exchange. In terms of architecture and urban design, this study posits the ground as part of the ambiance as it constitutes the ambient background of the sensory experience of public spaces. In order to develop this hypothesis three case studies are considered: the first, based on a reactivated listening of twenty sounds recorded in Paris to provide an analysis of the role that the ground plays in experiencing the ambiance; the second, a comparative set of observations and video recordings taken in two sites in Barcelona and La Défense in Paris; the third, is based on ten blind-folded commented walks carried out at La Défense. It tries to examine what the somatic experience of the ground entails, how does the relationship between the ground and the “soma” take place? In conclusion, the reciprocal contributions of Ambiances and Somatics are considered in relation to this material as we ask what new theoretical approaches these disciplines can provide in exploring body experience

Growing up as a child, we had a Dog. To us, it was like a means to an end. That is, hunting other animals for food and for protection, with no special care and treatment given to this animal. Butas days passed by I began to witness a wind of change against such actions. I was made to understand that we were committing two crimes-: using the Dog as a means to an end (for hunting and for eating animals). Today almost every newspaper has something to say about the treatment of animals by humans, especially in their use as experimentation subjects. This has led to the wide spread arguments about “Animal right” and “Animal equality” Advocates of the above arguments hold that just like humans, animals too have rights and are in many ways like humans. There also exist animal right groups. Organisations and countries now have laws regulating animal used in the laboratory. If I may be permitted, I will want to say that the world is in a state of dilemma regarding animal experimentation. While some argue against it, based on the claim that these animals have no right and are not equal to humans, others argue in favour of it on claims that animals have moral rights, feel pain and suffer just like humans and should not be subjected to painful experiments. I then begin to wander how research on animals to improve human health should not be undertaken just because it is claimed that these animals have rights and are in many ways equal to humans. It is the contention of this paper to find out the extent to which animal rights and animal equality justifies the fight against animal experimentation.

The Problem of Predation in Zoopolis”.

This project describes the role of ritual in the basic entrainment processes of Canadian soldiers. Building on the ecological systems theories of Urie Bronfenbrenner and Roy Rappaport, this project construes human adaptation to occur within multiple interdependent planes of ordered biological, sociostructural, psychosocial and symbolic (even transcendent) meanings and interactions within integrated social ecologies or “living systems.” Rappaport’s theory supports the argument that invariant, embodied actions and impulses not encoded by ritual performers establish social order, values, motivations, competencies, dispositions and representational or symbolic meanings—understood within this project as worldview—circulating within and regulating integrated human ecologies. Ordered sequences of invariant actions and impulses have also come to be conveyed within human phylogenic and ontogenetic developmental processes. This project specifically explores the hypothesis that embodied ritual dynamics pervade the basic entrainment rite of Canadian soldiers. The analysis draws on the ritual theory of Rappaport and the psychosocial developmental theory of Erik Erikson to describe the manner in which innate social regulating impulses and liturgically ordered ritual processes are exploited, in conjunction with predictable human psychosocial developmental imperatives, to build foundational martial dispositions, a spontaneous impulse to radical solidarity and a robust, homogeneous and multivocalic worldview in Canadian soldiers. Such a worldview is adaptive to all aspects of service within the Canadian Armed Forces. The rudimentary martial worldview inscribed upon recruit soldiers and officer candidates forms the foundational background to all subsequent martial meaning and adaptation in so far as it is collectively maintained throughout the military career. This argument maintains that a ritual analysis of adaptive meaning and solidarity among soldiers has profound implications for the structure and direction of future research investigating the persistent and well documented rates of distress, maladaptation and health pathology among serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

This thesis was divided in four parts. The first chapter was expressing the background, technique, and the media through the author’s view toward the “hand-made” and the “material” from the time started doing sculpture in college. The second chapter was the analysis of the elements: the tendency toward the soft material, the chosen of material, the connection between “hand-made” and repeated physical work and the minimum characteristic in creation. The third chapter was responding the second chapter through analyzing the work “Nest”, and the appearance of sculpture work from single piece to the possibility of extended in space. The forth chapter was the analysis of works which noticing the unique physical tactility in installation works then transformed visually through material and molding to express the minimum physical tactility.

Dissertação de mestrado em Political Philosophy
This dissertation explores the contributions of political philosophy to the debate about the consideration of nonhuman sentient beings. First, anthropocentrism and speciesism are analyzed as the dominant positions in moral and political philosophy, according to which human interests have priority (if not exclusive consideration) over nonhuman interests. It is argued that both positions are unjustified and that sentience is the criterion that matters for both moral and political consideration. Once anthropocentric biases are removed, political philosophy can translate ethical issues into the language of justice and place the interests of nonhuman sentient beings within the political realm. Secondly, Rawlsian and non-Rawlsian versions of contractualism are discussed to determine their compatibility with the protection of nonhuman interests. Finally, three fundamental works are analyzed in the context of the so-called “political turn in animal studies”: Zoopolis (2011) by Sue Donaldson and Will Kymlicka who claim the recognition of citizenship for domesticated animals, denizenship for liminal animals and sovereignty for wild animals; Sentientist Politics (2018) by Alasdair Cochrane who proposes a cosmopolitan sentientist democracy; and A Theory of Justice for Animals (2013) by Robert Garner who stresses the need to develop theories of justice that are sensitive to nonhuman interests but also politically feasible. The general conclusion to be drawn is that it is urgent to shift the debate on the consideration of nonhuman sentient beings from a question in applied ethics to a question of political action that requires a commitment of political institutions to the protection of nonhuman sentient beings.
